Ingredients

4 eggs

1/2 cup Lieber’s avocado oil

1 cup sugar

1 cup Lieber’s honey

1 teaspoon Lieber’s baking powder

1 teaspoon Lieber’s baking soda

1 teaspoon Lieber’s pure vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon Lieber’s sea salt

2 teaspoons Lieber’s cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon Lieber’s ground nutmeg

2 1/2 cups flour

1 cup Goldbaum’s original oat bliss

ONE BOWL HONEY BUNDT CAKE

HoneyGlaze:

1 cup powdered sugar

1 Tablespoon Lieber’s honey

1/2 teaspoon Lieber’s pure vanilla extract

2 teaspoons Goldbaum’s original oat bliss

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350˚. Grease a bundt pan with Lieber’s baking spray with flour; set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, add all ingredients aside from flour and milk. Whisk to combine.

Add half of the flour, followed by half of the oat milk, then the remaining flour and remaining oat milk. Whisk well after each addition.

Pour batter into prepared bundt pan. Bake for about 45 minutes, until cooked through.

Let cake cool for 10-15 minutes before removing it from the pan. Cool completely before adding glaze. Prepare the glaze: combine all ingredients in a small bowl. Drizzle over cooled cake.

Plan ahead: This cake freezes nicely, well wrapped.

Martin/Yosef meets Michoel, who questions him about his motives in this plan. Martin avoids answering personal questions about himself, which makes Michoel wonder if he can trust the boy. They agree to give Martin/Yosef a few days to get to know the place before figuring out their next step.

Dr. Skulholt tells them that it’s possible for them both to recover and be able to leave soon, but they’ll have to first pre-pay him for “upkeep medication” that they’ll have to take for at least the next five years.

CHAPTER SEVENTY FOUR

The moderator of the group, a hulking, blond guy, smiled all the time. Martin hated his smile. The guy also walked around among the eight people seated in a row facing him, and he was so close and towering over them that it seemed he would be able to peek into the shirt pockets of those who were wearing shirts with pockets.

Martin had no problem with that, on a personal level; he had no pockets on his shirt. But there was something he didn’t like about this crossing of personal boundaries, and he was pretty sure that Yosef would not have been able to stand it either.

“Hey!” he said, when the moderator, while listening to one of the participants describing with pathos the night he had just experienced, continued walking around the room, passing between Martin and the person to his left. “Hey, it gets crowded here when you pass by! Don’t pass here!”

The moderator—James or Jim; Martin hadn’t caught his name exactly—stopped. “I can avoid passing there if it bothers you,” he said pleasantly. “But you could be more polite.” “I’m not polite!” Martin stared at his palms. “If you were fighting for your life, you wouldn’t either have time to be polite.”

The person sitting on Martin’s left snickered. “You don’t need time to be polite,” he said, and moved his chair a bit more to the left, as if to expand the space between the chairs. “You just need to behave properly.”

“Well, to do that, you need to plan your responses,” Martin said doggedly, “and I have no time or patience for that.”

Someone at the end of the row fixed him with a stare. Martin stared back defiantly. “You have a problem with something?” he asked.

“No,” the other person said. He was a slim youth wearing a baseball cap, and he continued staring at Martin with those big, wondering eyes. “I have no problem.”

“Then look in a different direction,” Martin growled, and straightened up in his chair. The moderator was still quiet, as if he didn’t remember where he’d paused.

“Okay…” he said after a few seconds. “Who was in the middle of telling me about his night?”

“Me,” said the last person who had spoken. He looked toward Martin hesitantly, as if he was afraid the boy would erupt again. “But I don’t remember where I stopped.”

“So let’s move on to Josef, our new member,” the moderator said, looking at Martin. “Josef, would you like to tell us about your first night here?”

Martin stared at him. Making an assertive impression was sometimes fine, but it would be unwise of him to begin his stay here on a confrontational note. That was not the character he wanted to attribute to the figure he was playing.

“Yes,” he said. “I was tired, and I slept well.”

“I’m happy to hear that.” The blond giant smiled at him. “What else?”

“I had a few vague dreams.” He creased his forehead. “I know that my medications usually suppress dreams, but now, maybe because of all my traveling, I did have some dreams.”

“What did you dream about?”

Martin wrinkled the bridge of his nose in a puzzled expression. “I don’t really remember. Something about my uncle who is here. We were together someplace, not here, and he told me that we’ll leave here together, the two of us, and we’ll be healthy. But I can’t remember where it was and who else was there and what we were doing. Maybe we were on a boat, because I remember the sound of water.”

“Let’s hope for your sake that the dream comes true,” the

moderator said.

“But I’m afraid of places with water!” Martin protested. “Do you know how to swim?”

“Yes.”

“We have a nice pool here, you know, and we sometimes have swim contests.”

“Sure, contests,” someone snapped. “Don’t plant any illusions in his head, Jim, so that he doesn’t think he might win Mike.”

“I don’t win anyone,” Martin protested again. “I don’t go into the water. In the water, there are strange sounds of creatures that run after me.”

“And you can’t win them?” Jim asked.

Martin shrugged. “Maybe you’ll teach me how. I know in my mind that they don’t really exist; everyone always tells me that. I mean, the voices and everything. But I feel them very strongly, and it’s scary. If you can make it that I shouldn’t feel them, it will be great.” He stretched in his chair and folded his arms, as if to say, “I’ve said enough.” The moderator, to his credit, got the message and moved on.

Martin listened attentively to the participants, and tried to figure out what each one’s problem was. Another man seemed to be schizophrenic, and two were anorexics—the thin youth who had been staring at him before, and another one. He couldn’t diagnose any of the others, and they were talking about things he didn’t quite grasp anyway, and in a style that he didn’t understand.

“Did you enjoy the session with us, Josef?” the moderator asked him when the large room had emptied. The anorexic with the baseball cap was still standing at the door, as if lingering intentionally.

“Yes.” Martin nodded. “But I didn’t understand everything. What is the ‘power of pluralistic communication’? And what is the ‘energy of the right nail’?

“The nail energy is just something that the guy who said it made up, poor thing,” Jim said in a low voice, moving his mouth closer to Martin’s ear. “He’s totally incoherent. He was actually a pretty with-it guy, but at one point, something happened to him, and he got schizophrenia. Then, when he developed a fungus on one of his toenails, he began to believe that it was a curse that was cast on him by one of his enemies.” He laughed, and Martin, who wondered if Jim had forgotten that he was speaking to a schizophrenic himself, had a malicious urge to fret aloud that he also suffered from such a fungus and maybe it was also a curse. But he decided not to overdo it.

Instead, he just scowled and said, “I don’t like it when people laugh at schizophrenics, you know? He believes what he’s saying just like you believe”—his eyes roved around the room, until he caught sight of the skinny boy—“that Mike’s hat is gray, and it has orange embroidered words on it saying, ‘From Becky.’”

The boy standing at the door blushed. He took off the hat, crumpled it, and stuck it into his pocket. “Do you have a problem with my cap or something?” he snarled. He seemed ready to pay Martin back for the earlier lashing-out, and strode back into the room, as if he was going to deal Martin a punch or two.

“All right, guys, figure it out,” the moderator said cheerfully as he took a few steps back. “You don’t need my help in this

head-to-head, do you?”

Martin assessed the man’s size with a quick glance. “No. If you get involved, we’ll both end up flat as schnitzels.”

Jim chuckled, enjoying the compliment, and turned to go. “Just don’t let Mike’s size mislead you!” he yelled from the door. “He’s really thin, but man, is he strong!”

“The one who wins all the swimming competitions, huh?” Martin replied, and turned to Mike, who was drawing nearer. He had no intention of acquiring enemies on his first day here, and he was going to fix this mistake as quickly as he could. “Hey!” he said. “What are you so riled up about? I just wanted to show Jim how delusions can appear real. I hate it when people scorn me and people like me.”

“And you couldn’t find anything else to prove that to him with, besides for the cap that my sister embroidered with her name?”

“What’s wrong with that?”

“As it is, they say I’m too sentimental. And stop looking at me like that, Canadian.”

“Canadian? Who’s Canadian?” Martin automatically lowered his voice.

“You.”

“Don’t you know I come from Israel? My parents are American.”

“Don’t tell me stories; we have family in Canada, and their accent is exactly like yours.”

“Oh, that…” Martin laughed heartily and began walking to the door. He had to end this conversation as quickly as possible. They wouldn’t be friends, but at least Mike wasn’t looking at him so darkly anymore. “We speak mostly Hebrew at home. I spoke English with a friend of mine, and he is Canadian. My mother says that I got his accent.”

“Yeah, sure. Like Perl is your uncle,” Mike whispered.

“What?” Mike stopped and turned around to face him.

“And like you’re a schizophrenic.”

“What?”

“Stop saying, ‘What, what.’ Do I look like an idiot to you?” “Maybe. I don’t know, you’re saying things that…um… are really not normal.”

“Yes, go and tell it to my phone,” Mike sneered, still in a whisper.

“Your phone?”

“Yes. As Michoel Perl’s only friend, I lend him my phone regularly so he could speak to his niece, Hindddaaa.” With a strange smile, he rolled the letters on his tongue, and Martin didn’t know if it was scorn, or because he was really struggling with the name. Should he simply nod vigorously and say, in as natural a tone as he could muster, “Right, my mother”? Or should he just ignore Mike?

One thing he did know: This Mike was dangerous. Very, very dangerous.

Had his phone recorded Michoel Perl’s conversations? Had he listened to every word Michoel had said to Hinda?

I lean in closer to the mirror and brush the stray sheitel hairs out of my face as I finish applying my lipstick. There’s an inaudible, “ahhh!” feeling I have as I close my makeup case and secure my necklace around my neck.

I feel like a person again.

Today is the first day of school, my first day back to work, and it feels like we’ve come out into the sunlight after a long stretch of tunnel, blinking as our eyes get used to the brightness. It started when I sent the kids off in their crisp new uniforms and stiff shoes, with their careful hairstyles arranged, as I haven’t done in over two months. That was when the feeling of freedom first started to creep up on me. My adorable kids waved goodbye excitedly as they each boarded their bus or van, and I felt my heart tug as I showered them with my best wishes.

Now, as I close the door of my house with a gentle click and start striding briskly toward my job, I revel in that freedom. Bask in its exquisite taste, and then laugh at myself for being so poetic about the first day of school.

Hey, I think I earned this, I tell the voice in my head that’s laughing at me for being so over the moon about today. Without warning, a scene from last week pops into my head, as far away from today’s morning as you can get.

“Mommy, Mommy,” the pitiful wails and whimpers penetrated my dreams, startling me awake as I tried to find my slides with my toes, my eyes still halfway-closed. Why didn’t Breindy simply come pull my covers off me as she did most mornings? She was usually out of bed and pulling at me before she even had a chance to fully wake up.

The smell hit me as I came into the kids’ room, and I gagged. Breindy was sitting up in bed, pathetically crying, surrounded by the source of the stench.

“Oh,” I emitted as I took in the sight of her. Apparently, she’d thrown up in the middle of the night. I checked her forehead for fever, but she didn’t feel hot. Maybe she’d just eaten something funny?

I took a quick glance over at Yiddi and Roizy, who were both still peacefully sleeping in their beds, tousled hair and peyos draping their faces. Mutty was starting to stir in his crib, so I quickly hustled Breindy out of bed and into a bath so that I could get the worst of the mess dealt with before the rest of the crew woke up.

By the time Breindy was freshly bathed and dressed, her linen stripped and her pajamas in the washer, Yiddi and Roizy were chasing each other over a slinky, Mutty was yowling already in his crib, and my head was spinning.

I took a peek at the clock. It wasn’t even eight yet. And there was still a long, long, unstructured day ahead of us.

When I’d finally finished dressing all the kids and started serving breakfast, Breindy needed to be changed again. And a half-hour later, again. In between changes, she wanted me to hold her and cuddle her like a baby, even though she was two and half already.

Stomach viruses were so not fun.

She sat on my lap, her eyes red as she sobbed that her stomach hurt. Helplessly, I tried to comfort her, but that only made her cries louder. Yiddi and Roizy started banging on the table with their spoons, sending milk flying around the room and contributing to the noise level. Mutty crawled up to me and started pulling my skirt, kvetching to be held. My head pounding, I picked him up and tried to arrange him together with Breindy on my lap. “No, no, no,” Breindy complained, pushing Mutty in the other direction. “Only Breindy!”

Before I could try to convince her to be a good sister, Yiddi and Roizy turned over their cereal bowls, sending rivulets of milk and countless soggy Cheerios heading to the floor.

In the middle of that pandemonium, I’d closed my eyes and wished myself into the school routine, when I would have hours of peace and quiet at home. ***

The long-awaited day had finally come, and it was such a treat just to be able to get ready to leave the house without four crying kids pulling at my skirt, without having to wash a whole bunch of sticky

faces and hands just to be able to go out the door.

I pictured Yiddi as he had looked this morning waiting for the cheder bus, with his neatly curled peyos, proudly sporting his brand-new briefcase. So different from the way he’d looked during the two weeks he’d been home, where every hour had brought another mess and I’d barely had time to dress him in functional clothing.

“I’m going to cheder!” he’d sang this morning, his excitement at its peak. He was in kitah beis this year, as he made sure to tell everyone he met. My heart squeezed as I thought about his pure joy that he was starting to learn Chumash this year. He had made sure to remind me about that a couple of times this morning.

The school building was eerily silent as I walked through the front door, and I thought about Roizy, who was starting first grade. I hoped that she wasn’t feeling overwhelmed or afraid at being in such a big school building.

“Oh, hi, Tzippy,” the secretary greeted me as I walked into the office. “Nice to see you again! You’re teaching after recess today?”

“Yup,” I said, waving as I headed to the teachers’ room door. There would still be a few moments of quiet there before recess started. I’d do another quick review of my first-lesson notes, I decided. That would help the slight queasiness I still felt as I thought about walking into a brand-new class soon. If I was nervous, how nervous were my kids? I hoped my kids would manage, being all on their own today out in the big wide world.

Before I’d managed to put away my looseleaf, the teacher’s room door opened.

“Hi Tzippy!” my co-teacher Leah said exuberantly. “We’ve got a great class this year, don’t worry.”

I smiled. “After the first day you already know that?” I asked teasingly.

“Of course. All I need is a few minutes in the classroom and I know everything there is to know about the girls,” Leah declared. I laughed. Some of our students had definitely thought that was true about Leah as their teacher.

Leah dropped into a chair and put her bag down. “I totally love the first day of school,” she said. “Everything’s so fresh, and the girls are quaking in their seats.”

“Yeah,” I said. “I totally love the first day of school. I can finally hear myself think after two weeks of vacation.” I grinned.

Leah, who had seven kids at home, knew exactly what I was talking about.

“Oh, you bet,” she rolled her eyes dramatically. “I feel like a prisoner released from jail. I can actually

walk out of my house again!”

“It’s like, welcome to the land of the sane again,” I concurred. “If we all managed not to lose our sanity, we’re heroes.”

Baila and Vicky walked in just then.

“Who’s the hero? All of us first-day of school teachers?”

“Well yeah, but we were actually talking about first day of school mothers,” Leah said. “Coping with the kids home for two weeks straight makes us totally deserve a medal.”

“Aren’t we the nice ones, babysitting all our students so their mothers can get back their sanity in peace,” Baila said rhetorically.

Vicky looked around at all of us. “Am I the only one who gets crazy emotional on the first day of school? My little boy started kitah aleph today. I almost couldn’t concentrate on my class because I was thinking about him sitting there in a desk, with a rebbi instead of a morah…” she gives a little shiver of pride.

“Oh, of course,” Leah said immediately. “My oldest is going into eighth grade today. I think I was more excited about her milestone than she was! And terrified to have a teenager, you know.” She smiled self-deprecatingly. “I feel so old, worrying about my little girl in eighth grade. Makes me realize that my students, when I treat them like ‘mature adults,’ don’t necessarily need to be as mature or adult-ish as I want them to be. They’re as little as my daughter is!” She chuckled, and a couple of others did too. I thought about Roizy, starting first grade today. I was amazed at how big she looked as she put on her elementary school uniform for the first time.

“I totally have separation anxiety,” Vicky confessed as she plopped into a chair and took a bag of apple slices out of her briefcase. “I can’t imagine sending him off every day and not knowing anything about what he’s doing. Like, with a morah you can somehow know so much more about the schedule, when they do what, you know. But in first grade, I’m clueless, and I doubt they’re planning to clue me in. Can you imagine? I have no idea what my little boy is doing now.”

“That’s how it goes,” Leah said pragmatically. “The older they get the less you know about their lives.”

“You people are so funny,” Baila piped up from where she’d been listening in to the conversation.

“First you’re all excited that you don’t have to be with your kids all day, and then you start saying how crazy it is not to know what your kids are busy with every moment of the day.”

Leah and Vicky both started talking at once, but I looked at Baila thoughtfully. Was it really a

contradiction? Why couldn’t both sentiments ring true?

“Like, it’s your choice how much you want to be with your kids, even in this busy society,” Vicky was saying passionately. “Instead of waiting for the moment where you can dump them off by someone else, you can enjoy spending time with them.”

“I think that even as you’re waiting for the day that someone else is going to take care of them for a few hours a day, you never really let go of the worry about your kids,” I volunteered, clarifying the contradiction Baila had raised. “I know I was thrilled to be able to have this morning to myself, but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t thinking about my kids every other second. Of course I was.”

“One hundred percent,” Leah declared. “You bet I’m thrilled that my kids are out of the house today. But am I going to spend all day worrying that they’re all adjusting fine? Obviously, that’s all that’s on my mind. There’s no contradiction.”

“You are where your heart is,” I added. “So really, we’re still with our kids all day. It’s just that we’re not physically near them.”

Just then, the after-recess bell rang. My stomach lurched. It was time to walk into the classroom. ***

I looked around the room at the girls sitting stiffly in their newly-assigned desks, looking uncomfortable and out-of-place in the new classroom setting they found themselves in. Some of them were hiding nervous smiles, others were staring up at me expectantly, almost challengingly.

It was obvious that all of them had dressed with care, although some girls looked more put-together than others. And suddenly, I was aware of so much more filling the room than just me and my students. Every student was accompanied by her parents’ hopes and dreams. Every one of these girls had a mother who was thinking about her as much as I was fretting about Roizy and Yiddi. All of them had mothers who had taken care of them, cuddled them, and worried over them like I had over Breindy last week.

If a person is where their heart is, I reflected, this room is crowded full of these girls’ parents. All hoping that I would care about their daughter, notice their daughter, and make their daughter happy this year. All wondering how their daughter’s day in school was going and if she liked her teacher. Just like I was doing for my own kids.

No, I decided. Whatever Vicky said, it wasn’t physical proximity that equaled spending time with your kids. It was sending your heart along with them wherever they went. •

APPLE PICKS

Sweet apple sides are always welcome, especially on Rosh Hashanah when the apple is such a central focus. Both apple sides featured are quick and easy to prepare and will please kids and adults alike.

APPLE CUSTARD SQUARES

Batter:

3 cups flour

2 cups sugar

2 Tbsp vanilla sugar

½ tsp baking powder

½ tsp salt

1 cup oil

6 (xl) eggs

2 Tbsp lemon juice

Filling:

1 can apple pie filling

1 (12 oz) Bakers Choice custard

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Use an immersion blender to blend the apple pie filling until mostly smooth. Set aside.

3. Combine dry batter ingredients in a bowl and mix. Add oil, eggs and lemon juice and mix until smooth.

4. Spread batter evenly in the prepared baking sheet, using wet hands if necessary.

5. Use a knife to lightly score the batter, marking 8 rows in the length and 5 rows in the width.

6. Place a teaspoon of custard in the center of each square, then top with some apple filling.

7. Bake 40-45 minutes.

8. Let cool, then cut into squares. Sprinkle with confection sugar, if desired.

Note: You can use any flavor pie filling in the place of apple pie filling.

APPLE CINNAMON CIGARS

1 (36 pack) flaky dough squares, slightly defrosted

1 (15 oz) can apple pie filling

Glaze:

¾ cup light brown sugar, packed

6 Tbsp confection sugar, packed

1 Tbsp cinnamon

3 Tbsp water

3 Tbsp oil

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Line 3 baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. Blend the apple pie filling using an immersion blender until only small pieces remain. Set aside.

3. Place 12 pastry squares on each lined baking sheet.

4. Spread a teaspoon of pie filling down the center of each pastry square.

5. Bring one side of the pastry square over the filling. Lift the other side of the pastry square, bringing it almost to the end and gently seal it. The pastry square should be folded in 3, like a letter. Turn the pastry squares over, so the seam is on the bottom.

6. Combine glaze ingredients in a small bowl and whisk until smooth.

7. Using a pastry brush, spread glaze over the tops of the cigars.

8. Bake 20-25 minutes until puffed and golden.

9. Cool completely before storing. (Cigars can be frozen and reheated uncovered over low heat until warmed through.)

Tip: Serve with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream for a quick and easy dessert.

Shaved salad allows you to use root vegetables that you can keep it in the house for awhile and prep in advance, making it a perfect salad option for the Yom Tov season ahead. And they’ll all begin with a mandoline, a thin slicer attachment in the food processor, or my favorite, a simple potato peeler. Alternate simple circles and veggie ribbons for both looks and mouth feel. These salads have a no fail formula: shaved veg + dressing + garnish. Allow that to guide you and use what you have at hand. For Rosh Hashanah, and the entire month of Tishrei, here’s a sample recipe that is equally beautiful as it is delicious.

What to slice? Beets of all stripes literally Stripey Chioggia beets are especially pretty when shaved), kohlrabi, celery root, a rainbow of carrots, radishes, parsnips, jicama are all great. Beyond the roots, anything that’s crisp will work: cucumbers, celery, cabbage, broccoli stalks and/or florets, fennel. And don’t forget crunchy fruits, too; apples and pears (either the Asian variety or slightly under-ripe)

◆ THE DRESSING

Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Add an acid of your choice like freshly juiced lemon or vinegar. Dress with one of the Fork + Bowl vinaigrettes

◆ THE GARNISHES

Store all prepped vegetables in a separate container from the red beets. When ready to serve, combine all of the veggies except for the red beets. Dress. Toss well. Allow to marinate for a minimum of 15 minutes. When ready to serve, place the red beets in a shallow bowl. Pour the remaining veggies on top of it together with the dressing, and rearrange some of them to keep the aesthetic. Top with garnishes. Enjoy and have a ksiva ve’chasima tova.

Awakening Compassion

The cry of the shofar pierces the hearts of Jewish communities worldwide. Its clarion voice is a wake-up call, signaling the approach of the Yom HaDin, when the fate of every human being is decided by Hashem. Its call bestirs us to increase the merits which stand up for us in the heavenly court - to reflect on our actions, repent our wrongs, and reaffirm our commitment to the Torah’s ways.

Listen hard to the shofar’s wailing cry and you can imagine the thoughts and prayers that fill the hearts of our fellow Yidden as they face the start of another new year. For thousands of families living below the poverty line in Eretz Yisroel, those thoughts are poignant indeed. For them, the Yom Tov season – Rosh Hashana, followed by Yom Kippur, Sukkos, Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah – is a daunting ordeal as the extra costs of meals, clothing and other holidays needs compound the daily struggle to simply survive.

Kupath Rabbi Meir Baal Haness Kollel Polin, one of Eretz Yisroel’s oldest, foremost charitable organizations, is a lifeline of support for struggling Torah families. For more than a century, its relief programs have helped those who need it most, subsidizing medical bills, chasuna expenses, holiday costs, and other critical financial needs. Now Kupath Rabbi Meir is holding its annual Elul fundraising campaign, so it can distribute tzedaka stipends in time for Yom Tov. It is calling for the support of individuals worldwide who recognize the pain of others and want to help.

The shofar’s otherworldly blast proclaims our freedom to choose the right path, reminding us that our lives are not hopelessly predestined, no matter how many challenges we face. As we employ Chazal’s timeless formula for a good decree - Teshuva, Tefilah and Tzedaka - the time-honored pledge of Rabbi Meir Baal Haness is especially significant. Rabbi Meir pledged to advocate in Shamayim for those who give tzedaka to the needy of Eretz Yisroel. For over 200 years, his segulah has helped countless supporters find the brachos and yeshuos they seek in life.

Our sages teach that the Shofar Gadol which sounded at Har Sinai, when Am Yisroel stood together as one, will proclaim the coming of Mashiach. The cry of the shofar opens our ears, so we can open our hearts, and hasten that day with increased zechusim!

R’ Zusha was learning in a Shul in a strange town. All of a sudden, a women walks into the Shul and askes, “Did anyone see my husband? He disappeared a few weeks ago and I have decided to go from town to town to look for him.” She then described him.

R’ Zusha jumped up and said, “Go to the nearby hostel, and you will find him there!”

The women didn’t think twice and ran there and found her husband there!

She returned with the news that she found him and the people of the town realized that he must be a miracle-worker. He had not stepped foot into that hostel, how would he know that her husband is there?

They approached R’ Zusha, who humbly said, “Today in the morning, I overheard 2 people talking and saying that there is a new person who just arrived at the hostel. I was wondering why Hashem chose me to overhear that. Surely, there must be a reason. I was still puzzled about that piece of unnecessary information when the women came into Shul. I jumped to the conclusion that he must be the newcomer who had just arrived at the hostel.”

Start by cutting out the leopard and the רמנכ זע יוה thats on that page. Save for later.

Then, take the page with the peach colored lines. Notice on both sides there is a thin line?

We will call that the Edge. The edge is there to keep all the peach strips attached. And it will also help you weave the beige strips inside. Be careful not to cut into the edge.

Cut the page along the black line Fold in half (there is a thin grey line to guide you.) Cut on black lines like “slices”. Be careful not to cut all the way through it and leave the edge.

Next, cut out the beige strips. Now, thread the strips into the peach paper that you have sliced, by weaving under and over.

If you started the rst strip under and then over, for the next strip - do over and then under to create the checkerboard pattern. Do this until all the beige strips have been weaved.

Glue the edges so the strips dont slip out.

Glue the leopard on top of the woven page.

Bonus: If you want to add a black border to complete the look, use electrtricalical tape. Fold half of the tape down to the back of the page. This should give you a thin, nice border Do the same for the
