Recap of Chapter 70

Martin arrives in New York and meets Shimon Weisskopf, where he stays overnight.

Hinda and Dov go away with Yosef to a moshav for a few days, to keep him under the radar. After just a short while there, Yosef announces that he wants to leave and go back to Ma’ayanei Hayeshuah hospital in Bnei Brak. Incredibly, Mali asks Hinda if she can come for Shabbos— until she hears that Yosef will be home too.

CHAPTER SEVENTY ONE

“Um…um…hello, good morning.” Martin’s voice didn’t sound very stable when someone finally answered the phone, but he really didn’t mind. He was Yosef Schorr, and he was confused and uptight from his flight; he was allowed to sound unsure of himself.

“Hello.”

“This is Yosef Schorr. I landed last night.”

“Where are you now?”

“In Boro Park, Brooklyn. In the home of,” he swallowed, “my second cousin.”

“Okay. There’s a ticket in your name for the next part of the trip. Be at Newark Airport this evening at 6:30, and you’ll get instructions from there.”

“Where am I going?” he mumbled.

“We keep our location a secret, Josef.” It sounded like the man was smiling kindly. “Otherwise, we would have given your mother the information when you were still in Israel.”

“Oh…” His voice faltered.

“Make sure you are on time, alright? Be there at 6:30 this evening, so you don’t miss the flight.”

Martin nodded, and then remembered to say, “Yes, yes.”

“And you know what you are supposed to bring, yes?” “Yes.”

“Your English is very good.”

“Right. I speak a lot of English at home.”

Would they mention his Canadian accent? Or would they suffice with Hinda’s explanation that her son had befriended someone from Canada who greatly helped him with his English and whose accent he had adopted?

No, they didn’t ask.

“Okay, then, all the best, Josef Schorr,” the man said, somewhat ceremoniously.

Martin turned to Shimon after hanging up the phone. “We won’t be able to go together. They ordered a ticket for me. I don’t even know where I’m going.”

“That’s why I bought you this tiny phone.” Shimon opened a drawer and rummaged inside. “Where did I put it...? Don’t tell me I lost it again. It happened once already… Oh, whatever, I’ll find it soon. You come there with your regular phone. They may let you use it, or they may take it away. From what I understood from my father’s cousin, most of the people there don’t have their own phones. It’s one of the suspicious things about them. Just to be on the safe side, you should have another one hidden on you.” He raised his eyes. “I wish I could change places with you! This kind of thing is just up my alley!”

“Mine too,” Martin cut him off, as if they were competing about their love for drama and action. “But I still like to know where I’m going and what’s in store!”

“That’s the whole point!” Shimon laughed. “Not knowing is part of the fun! But it’s your picture in Yosef’s passport, not mine. Maybe at some point down the line I’ll be able to have a part in this. Call me from the airport the minute you know where your flight is going, and we’ll be in touch. I’ll also try to get to the area. When you call them, tell them

this is your phone, and then call me from the little one I bought you. Nu, where is it?” He climbed on and off chairs, dragged over a ladder, and finally found the phone on a neglected shelf near the dishwasher.

“Hide it well,” he advised Martin. Then he turned to the paper bags he had brought back after Shacharis. “Now, let’s eat breakfast. Then you’ll start getting ready for the trip, and we’ll plan the next few hours, too.”

“So, will you come to us for Shabbos, Mali?” Hinda asked. She was sitting on a wooden swinging bench in the bungalow’s lush yard, letting her feet dangle in the air. Yosef and Dov were already sleeping, but Mali had always been a night owl, a trait she’d gotten from her mother.

“Um…to the bungalow where you are?”

“Yes, on Moshav Dalton. You can come to Tzefas on Friday, and Dov and I will pick you up. We’d love to have you.”

“It could be nice,” Mali said slowly. “And Yosef won’t be there, right?”

“He’s probably leaving tomorrow.” Hinda’s voice was a bit flat.

“Don’t tell him I’m coming, okay?”

“So that he won’t want to stay? Don’t worry, he won’t want to.”

“No, so that he won’t be insulted that I’m coming only because he’s not there.”

“Why are you so edgy, Josef?” the security officer at Newark International Airport asked Martin, handing him back his passport, which Martin had displayed as his form of ID.

Martin looked down at his feet. “I don’t like flying myself,” he said quietly.

“Ho! Well, why do you do things that you don’t like to do?”

“Because my mother told me to.”

The security officer burst out laughing. “You’re an adult, and you do everything your mother tells you to do? I wish that on my own kid, and he’s only four!”

“We religious Jews listen to our mothers when we are adults, too,” Martin said. He scratched his forehead. “Also, I have schizophrenia, and because of it, I don’t always know what I’m supposed to be doing. So I really do need to listen to my mother.”

“Interesting.” The security officer seemed to be enjoying the conversation. “And can I ask why you are traveling to Charleston, Josef?”

“There’s a doctor there for me. Actually, not just one doctor—it’s a medical center.”

“A medical center in Charleston? What is it called?”

“I don’t know. They’re going to pick me up from the airport and bring me there…” Martin was beginning to sound strained. The last thing he wanted was for himself—and his

passport—to attract too much attention. “The doctor in charge is something Skulholt, I think.”

“Skulholt?” The man frowned. “Are you sure?”

The youth nodded vigorously.

“That’s the center where your mother sent you?”

“What, it’s not good there? Should I go home?”

The man studied him. “There are all kinds of people there,” he said, his tone low and slow. “Including crazy ones, who do illegal nonsense. You’re not going to do anything like that, right? You don’t want to get mixed up with the police, I’m sure.”

“No, no!” Martin hurriedly declared. “I want to be healthy, so I can go home to my mother! What do those people do there? Steal?”

“They don’t exactly steal, but… Look, if anyone there tells you to make trouble in public places—know that that’s not allowed. It’s called vandalism, and anyone who does it goes to prison, which is not a nice place at all.”

“No, I don’t break anything!” Martin put his hand on his heart. “Jews don’t break other people’s things!”

The man smiled at him. “Okay, very good,” he said. “The main thing is that you should be healthy. Have a safe trip, and take care!”

“Thank you,” Martin said. Hastily, before the guy could continue schmoozing with him, he grabbed his bag and continued on to his terminal. ***

After the flight, Martin joined the other passengers heading for baggage claim in Charleston International Airport. His eyes followed the signs; someone was supposed to be waiting for him at Plaza A. He didn’t dare call Shimon yet; there were too many people around.

A stream of passengers swept him to the right, and he was happy to see a sign flashing in red. Good, this was the right place; they’d mentioned this sign to him on the phone. But no one seemed to be waiting near Plaza A. Was this a test, or were they just randomly late?

If he would have been Yosef, this would have frustrated him to tears. And right now, he was Martin acting as Yosef, so he was allowed to pace around with small nervous steps near Plaza A and murmur nervously to himself.

He quietly tossed random words around to himself, words that had nothing to do with each other, and was surprised to discover something calming about it. Then he switched to saying, “Michoel. Michoel. Michoel. My uncle. Skulholt. Don’t break anything.” He repeated this mantra a few times, until finally, at the end of the eleventh time, someone waved to him from the end of the plaza. It was a bespectacled, smiling man, and he was walking toward him. “Welcome, Josef Schorr?” He offered his hand to Martin. Martin looked at him. “Yes,” he whispered, and after three seconds, he also put his hand out and vigorously shook the other man’s hand.

“Nice to meet you,” the man said, releasing his hand. “I’m Rob, a nurse at the center you’re coming to. You know, you don’t look at all like Michoel.”

“You know Michoel?” Martin’s eyes opened wide.

“Sure.” The man laughed. “He’s one of the patients for whom I do regular kosher grocery runs. I’m actually on my way back now from doing another shopping trip there; I left the bags in the car. I guess you’ll be joining the other two, right?”

“I don’t understand,” Martin murmured.

“Your uncle and one other person at our place eat only kosher. You’re going to be the third, if I understood correctly. So I had to buy more food, that’s all.” His smile seemed to have diminished a bit. “Let’s go to my car.”

The youth looked at him for a minute, and then picked up his suitcase. What would Yosef do now? Continue the conversation with Rob, or was he too self-absorbed for that?

He stayed silent and simply followed Rob, trying to look a bit lost and shaken.

Rob led him to a shiny, gray car. Without a word, he took Martin’s suitcase from him, opened the back door, and tossed the valise inside. “Let’s go,” he said.

“What?” Martin asked. He imagined he was supposed to get into the car, but he didn’t want to initiate anything.

“Get in, here next to me.”

Martin took his seat and fastened his seatbelt, all the while remaining quiet. His eyes landed on the folded-in mirror outside his window.

“Open it; I can’t drive without a mirror,” Rob said tersely, while opening the mirror on the driver’s side. His guest reached out hesitantly to straighten the other mirror. Apparently, in potential life-and-death situations, mirrors were allowed, even if you were a member of the staff at Skulholt’s medical center.

After driving what Martin estimated to be about three miles, Rob finally spoke up again. “We’re so glad that you’ve come to us.”

“Yes.” The boy nodded vigorously.

“What’s in your suitcase?”

“Clothes,” he said. “And some treats for Michoel. And Jewish books for me and for him.”

“Nice. And a phone?”

“Sure I have a phone.” He pulled it out of his pants pocket while glancing out the window. The city’s buildings were visible, but they were not driving toward them. “I spoke to you from it!”

“Not me, but that doesn’t matter.”

“Michoel doesn’t have a phone. He called my mother from the office.”

“Right.”

“Will they let me keep mine?”

“I don’t know. We’ll see what the psychiatrist says. What kind of phone do you have? With a camera?”

“Of course not!” Martin had already learned something, and he was offended on behalf of Yosef. “This is a kosher phone!”

“Oh, you can eat it?” Rob chuckled. “Is it made of chocolate?”

“No, a kosher phone is only a phone. No internet, no text messaging, and it doesn’t have a camera either.”

“No camera? That’s good.”

“Right.” Martin-Yosef nodded again. The scenery changed now to fields. In the distance, there were a few hills, and beyond them, the faint forms of taller mountains. The Rockies? He wasn’t very knowledgeable about the geography of the United States.

“Photos are very harmful.” Rob turned the wheel. “Photos destroy the halo of a person; they set it in a terrible way, and what’s in the picture penetrates the person’s personality afterward, and blocks out everything else.”

“Some of your words are a little hard for me to understand,” Martin said thoughtfully, rubbing his stubbly chin. “What do you mean?”

Rob glanced at him. “It doesn’t matter now,” he said. “I’m just a nurse. Dr. Jerry will decide the best treatment for you, and if it’s necessary to get into long explanations.”

“I know English very well!” His passenger was offended. “You can explain everything to me!”

“I’m sure. But why confuse you with extra explanations? It’s better to focus on talking about things that will help you, right?”

“Right,” Martin said, nodding vigorously again, and worrying that very soon, his neck would get strained from all his vigorous nodding. Yosef would have to learn to react in other ways; there was no other choice.

A high wall suddenly loomed in front of them in the flat landscape. Rob began to slow down, and Martin took a deep breath. He was soon going to meet the man in whose home he had taken up residence for quite a while, and there was something about that that made him anxious. Not because of his fear of Michoel, but because of the fear of those around him. He allowed himself an internal pat on the back for his acting skills, while realizing that right now, a lot depended on the acting skills of Michoel Perl, too.

“With Hashem’s help,” he heard Dov’s voice echo in his head.

“Right,” Martin said to the window, not particularly quietly. Rob glanced at him briefly before the car drove through an opening in the wall, as the electric gate slid gracefully to the side.

HERBED CREAM CHEESE BRAIDS

There’s something about the creamy, savory filling that makes these braids extra delicious. Bake in the Betty Crocker or your regular oven. Enjoy!

Yield: 12 Cream Cheese Braids

Dough:

1 tablespoon dry yeast

1 teaspoon sugar

½ cup warm water

½ cup apple juice

3 cups flour

1 ½ tablespoons oil

1 teaspoon salt

Egg, whisked for egg wash

Maldon salt, for garnish

Filling:

3 tablespoon cream cheese

3 tablespoons sour cream

3 cubes frozen dill (or 1 teaspoon dried dill)

3 cloves crushed garlic

3-4 cubes frozen, sauteed onions (or 1 small white onion, sauteed)

Salt and pepper to taste

¾ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

2 tablespoons parmesan cheese, optional

Directions:

1. Filling: In a medium bowl, stir in all the filling ingredients until combined. Set aside.

2. Dough: In a small bowl, combine the yeast, sugar, warm water and apple juice, and stir softly until dissolved. Let proof for about 3-5 minutes.

3. In a large bowl, combine the flour, oil, and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and mix until combined. With gloved hands, knead until the dough is smooth.

4. Place in a warm area, cover with a dishtowel, and let rise for about 1 hour.

5. Grease your counter with cooking spray or sprinkle with flour.

6. Divide the dough into 6 balls. Roll each ball into a 6x10 inch rectangle (not too thin).

7. Spoon some filling lengthwise, down the center of the dough.

8. Cut slits 1 inch apart along the two sides of the rectangle.

9. Starting at one end, fold the strips over the filling, alternating sides, to “braid” the dough. Continue to fold the dough strips until the filling is covered completely. Cut each braid in half, so you have two smaller braids (you should get two 2 braids per dough ball).

10. Brush the braids with egg wash and sprinkle with flaky salt.

11. Line your Betty Crocker with parchment paper. Place the braids inside and bake for about 20 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve warm.

TIP: To Bake in the oven: Preheat your oven to 350° and bake braids on a lined baking sheet for about 30- 35 minutes, until golden brown.

You’re going to want to make these instead of traditional pizza or calzones. They’re smaller- which means better portion control and can be filled with literally any topping of choice. Serve with warm marinara and your meal is just about complete.

Yield: 12 Cheese Rolls

Dough:

1 tablespoon dry yeast

1 teaspoon sugar

½ cup warm water

½ cup apple juice

3 cups flour

1 ½ tablespoons oil

1 teaspoon salt

Filling:

½ cup sliced olives (green or black)

1- 4 oz. can sliced mushrooms

6 Tuscanini sundried tomatoes, chopped

2 cloves crushed garlic

3-4 cubes frozen, sauteed onions (or 1 small white onion, sauteed)

Salt and pepper to taste

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, optional (omit to keep parve)

2 tablespoons parmesan cheese, optional (omit to keep parve)

Directions:

1. Grease 12 muffin cups with cooking spray. Set aside.

2. Filling: In a medium bowl, stir in all the filling ingredients until combined. Set aside.

3. Dough: In a small bowl, combine the yeast, sugar, warm water and apple juice, and stir softly until dissolved. Let proof for about 3-5 minutes.

4. In a large bowl, combine the flour, oil, and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and mix until combined. With gloved hands, knead until the dough is smooth.

5. Place in a warm area, cover with a dishtowel, and let rise for about 1 hour.

6. Grease your counter with cooking spray or sprinkle with flour.

7. Divide the dough in 2 balls. Roll each ball into a 6x18 inch rectangle.

8. Spoon the filling over the entire dough, until the edges. Working from the long edge, roll up the dough tightly (like cinnamon rolls), pinching the edges when done. Using a sharp knife (or a piece of thread/ dental floss), cut 12 even slices. Place each slice in the prepared muffin pans. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with Maldon salt or the topping of your choice.

9. Preheat oven to 350°. Bake the rolls for about 22-25 minutes (if the cheese gets too brown in the last 10 minutes of baking, loosely place some silver foil over the pan to prevent burning).

10. Once the rolls are golden and cooked through, remove from oven. Serve warm with marinara sauce on the side.

SOFT EVERYTHING ‘PRETZEL’

Typically, pretzels are placed in a baking soda ‘bath’, before baking, to give them their signature pretzel taste. Here, we avoid that step for a simpler and equally delicious bagel-pretzel hybrid.

Yield: 6-8 pretzels

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon dry yeast

1 teaspoon sugar

½ cup warm water

½ cup apple juice

3 cups flour

1 ½ tablespoons oil

1 teaspoon salt

Everything bagel seasoning (poppy seeds, white & black sesame seeds, dried/ minced garlic and onion, sea salt or flaky salt)

Directions:

1. Preheat your oven to 400° and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. In a small bowl, combine the yeast, sugar, warm water and apple juice, and stir softly until dissolved. Let proof for about 3-5 minutes.

3. In a large bowl, combine the flour, oil, and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and mix until combined. With gloved hands, knead until the dough is smooth.

4. Place in a warm area, cover with a dishtowel, and let rise for about 1 hour.

5. Grease your counter with cooking spray or sprinkle with flour.

6. Divide the dough in 6-8 balls (depending on your preferred size of pretzel).

7. Roll each piece into a long rope and twist into a pretzel shape (make sure there’s space in the holes so they remain in shape). Place on the prepared baking sheet.

8. Brush with egg wash, and generously top with Everything Bagel Seasoning. Bake for about 15-20 minutes, until the tops are golden brown. Serve warm.

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT

AA change of scenery is so nice for you and your kids. Good for you that you are getting to go away. I am assuming that you are not having access to kosher food, so let's be simple, creative, and healthy here!

Let's start with snacks for your family:

• Bring along a few bags of baby carrots and containers of hummus. This is a very filling and satisfying snack.

• Dried fruit

• I love the slim cheeses from Ha’olam. Simply bring along some ice packs and keep all things that need refrigeration in an ice bag to be kept cool. Have some crackers with cheese for a snack or light meal.

• Packs of plain turkey roll. Also keep these in your cooler and have them handy for lunches or snacks with some crackers or rice cakes

• Trail mix-this can give your kids some needed energy and is filling and healthy at

the same time

• If you are on a weight loss program, bring along some light Greek cheese snacks, yogurts, Yo-bars, cheese, fruit, and approved muffins and have them at your approved snacking times, or as needed.

Dinner ideas:

• If you have access to bringing along a portable grill, you will have a really easy time. Bring along any chicken or meat and simply grill with minimal spices. This will be filling for everyone. You can bring along a bag of broccoli and steam it over the grill as well.

• If you have a Betty Crocker, you can also use it for basics such as cutlets or even a rib steak. You can also bake your frozen french fries in it as a delicious side.

• Eggs are always welcome and filling! Make them any way you like in your Betty Crocker.

• Pita and falafel. Chop up a salad (you can buy veggies anywhere) and bake your falafel balls in your Betty Crocker and you are good to go.

• I have taken along a crock pot in the past and put up a meat stew with potatoes in the morning. We came back to our Air BNB to a heavenly dinner that was filling and healthy.

• Wraps- you can make avocado wraps, lox wraps, or egg and tuna wraps. Fill up your wrap with veggies so that it is a more robust meal.

Based on these ideas you can see that with minimal preplanning and some advance shopping, you can really have yourself and your kids on a great and healthy food schedule. All these meals contain proteins, veggies and carbs, and that is what you need to keep yourself healthy and happy while on the go!

S S STRATEGIES FOR OPTIMUM SUCCESS PARENTS OF A BULLY

Q: The rebbe of my six-year old son expressed his concern that my son teases and bosses his friends (especially whoever sits next to him in class). As a mother, I would like to give the rebbe as much support as I can by trying to address the matter at home. My difficulty is that I have hardly seen this behavior at home, so I have limited "hands-on" opportunity to help him improve in this area. I can talk to him and explain why this sort of behavior is inappropriate and try to help him understand that the recipient of his teasing feels bullied, but how else can I help my son?

(Our son is the younger of two boys, his brother being ten. Although we have a relatively small family, but friends do play in our house constantly, so he still receives ample social stimulation and learning opportunities.)

A: I’m really impressed that you asked this question. Many parents think that if their children are not acting out at home, they are probably model students in school as well. In fact, The Journal of the American Medical Association estimates that over 30% of children are involved in bullying, either as the target or as the perpetrator.

Though a six-year-old may seem a bit young for bullying, it is great to catch the behavior early because studies have shown that those who act as bullies seem to maintain these characteristics into adulthood, often negatively influencing their ability to develop mature adult

relationships. So, good for you for asking this question! It shows how much you care about your son. There are several ways that you can go about helping your son in order to minimize his bullying behavior in school:

• Observe. Pay close attention to the way both of your sons interact. Does your ten-year-old boss your six-year-old around? Is it the opposite? Your tenyear-old could unknowingly be ordering his younger brother around at the table, in the backyard, or in the car. Your older son might simply be trying to help his brother, but it might come off as bossing or bullying to your six-year-old. Perhaps without realizing it, your six-year-old is modeling the relationship he has with his older brother. If this is the case, talk to both children about ways that they can help and support each other without being bossy or domineering.

• Role-play. Even if you do not see the bullying at home, another option for addressing the negative behavior can be through role-playing. Set aside some quiet time in the evening or on a Sunday when your six-year-old is well-rested and relaxed. Then, reenact situations both as the bully and the victim. This will teach him the correct responses when he finds himself in a circumstance where he feels the urge to boss or bully.

• Right the wrongs. A great way to deter your child from negative behavior is to encourage him to reverse the damage that he has done. Some suggestions for righting the wrong are writing a letter to the target, inviting the child

for a playdate, or giving a sincere compliment. This will not only make the victim feel more comfortable around your son, but will also give your six-yearold the satisfaction of positive social interactions. In turn, your child might hesitate to bully in the future.

• Schedule an appointment with the school. The best way to find out more information about your son’s behavior in school is to speak to the people who see him in school every day. Among those people are his rebbe, guidance counselors, and the principal. Letting them know that you are concerned about the issue and also taking steps to correct it will persuade them to support your son as well.

One of the hardest things for parents to contemplate is that their cute, innocent child is acting in a way that is hurtful to others. Yashar koach to you for confronting the bullying and making an effort to work on it. Possibly, understanding that these drives are natural and instinctive can help you deal with this difficult behavior. Dr. Michael Thompson, author of Best Friends/ Worst Enemies: Understanding the Social Lives of Children, explains, “All human beings have aggressive impulses, even children. And kids show their aggression through teasing and intimidation -- it can begin when they're as young as two and a half.”

So, don’t worry about your son. His behavior is quite typical and if you react appropriately, you will be able to channel all of that energy into positive endeavors.

100 Years Later History to be Made Again in Same Hall in Vienna Where Rav Meir Shapiro Proposed Daf HaYomi

Some locations are so historic that they defy the imagination. One such place is the historic Sofiensäle Hall in Vienna, a concert hall where, during the month of Elul one-hundred years ago the groundbreaking, worldchanging concept of the Daf HaYomi was proposed by the young Rav of the Polish town of Sonik. This year on motzoei Shabbos Bereishis, history will once again be made in that very hall in Vienna. That same hall will be filled to capacity once more, graced and led by leading Gedolei Yisrael and leading Roshei Yeshiva, Rabbanim, and maggidei shiur, as they celebrate a siyum on Seder Nashim and half of the present Daf HaYomi cycle.

Even more exciting, a new Klal Yisrael learning initiative that promises to have a transformative impact on Yidden and Torah learning the world-over will be proposed in that very location where Rav Meir Shapiro with his booming voice and optimism launched the Daf HaYomi.

The siyum will be the climax of a Historic Mission spearheaded by

Dirshu and led by Gedolei Yisrael that will begin with a visit and special tefillos on behalf of Klal Yisrael at the kever of the Chasam Sofer in Pressburg within three days of his yahrtzeit, and continue with Dirshu’s International Shabbos Convention in Pressburg. The climax will be the celebration, the siyum, will be held at the historic Sofiensäle Hall in Vienna where the first Knessia Gedolah was held in Elul of 1923, when Rav Meir Shapiro proposed the Daf HaYomi.

The inspirational pinnacle of erev Shabbos will be the special maamad tefillah on behalf of lomdei Daf HaYomi and Klal Yisrael led by Gedolei Yisrael at the kever of the Chasam Sofer. Klal Yisrael is so in need of shemirah, in ruchniyus and in gashmiyus, in yeshuos, refuos and shidduchim, and at the makom Kadosh the burial place of the Chasam Sofer, around the time of his yartzeit is the opportune time to invoke rachamei shomayim.

At this year’s European International Dirshu Convention there will be a return to history; but perhaps even more importantly new history will be made.

That’s why I needed Yoeli to collect the money already. I applied for financing for a big project recently, but so far my application was rejected. If I could only get all the outstanding payments from this bungalow colony together now, I wouldn’t the financing so badly. I know Yoeli hates when I pressure him to get the money together, but I really didn’t have a choice. I need the cash.

I saw by the look on his face that he thinks I’m just money-hungry. Here he knows how many digits the profit of the bungalow colony is, and I’m running after every last penny. He thinks he knows the whole story, but he really doesn’t. And I can’t tell him, because I can’t have anyone knowing that I’m a shtickel strapped for cash right now.

I wish he would just trust me, after all these years working together, that I’m not pushing him for nothing. ***

Pinchas Tillerman speaks: Why did Yoeli have to pick today of all days to come to me? I knew right away he was going to ask about money. It’s been that kind of day. I already regretted reserving my bungalow again a few months ago, but I didn’t want to cancel. Mindy needed the vacation really badly.

But I knew already then that things weren’t looking so good. I think I’m good at what I do, but when you get paid a commission-based only salary, you have to be the best. And with the amount of closings I had this year, I was definitely not the best. But it wasn’t my fault. Our little Bruchi was born three months early in the middle of the winter. Taking care of a preemie is a full-time job, so Mindy had to quit what she was doing. And while she was busy with Bruchi all the time, guess who was taking care of the rest of the kids?

There are so many organizations out there, and a bunch of them were really amazing at giving us tons of help. But none of them can compensate for losing two salaries just at a time when our expenses soared higher than ever.

Still, I didn’t want to take the country away from Mindy and the kids after such a hard year. And based on the hints I dropped between

the lines, my father-in-law offered to help us out as well.

Either way, I was hoping this was just a temporary stage. We’d eaten up our savings, but next year Mindy would go back to work, now that Bruchi was doing so well. I also decided to look for a non-commissionbased job, so that I would know that when I worked, I got paid. It was too hard to live on commission alone anymore.

But just today, Mindy had been told that her job was no longer available. They were very sorry, but they didn’t have another job to offer her.

And when I tried to call the recruiter who’d helped me apply for a new job, he told me that the position I’d applied for had been filled too.

So when Yoeli came to ask for the money, I wasn’t too excited to talk to him about it. It’s a pity he came today.

Yoeli’s not a bad guy, though. I’m sure he realizes why I acted like that. ***

Yoeli speaks:

“You were out for a while,” Kreindy says when I walk into the kitchen.

I tell her the whole story, trying to disguise details so it isn’t lashon hara.

“Nebach, they’re both probably so pressured about money,” Kreindy says right away, and I realize she must be right, even if I don’t know why.

“It’s a mazel that you were the one asking for the money,” Kreindy says. “Imagine if Green would have asked this guy for money, and they’re both so stressed out about money already. A disaster! Like this, you were the middleman, and both of them took out their stress on you.”

I chuckle. “So now being a manager means I’m a punching bag also?” I ask in jest. Kreindy doesn’t laugh. “No, really,” she says. “Everyone has a story, especially when it comes to money.”

I nod thoughtfully. I should have realized right away that they both were stressed out for a reason, but I was happy Kreindy had pointed it out. There are two sides to every coin, and so many more to every person’s story. •

He waves, “Hatzlucha,” and sticks his hands back in his pockets as he walks back to his bungalow.

Shmili’s really right. These people owe him the money, having enjoyed his beautiful bungalows for nearly two months now. Our bungalow colony doesn’t sell any of the bungalows, everyone’s renters, so that’s a lot of rent collection to take care of.

For some reason though, I just can’t picture starting with Goldman, who has 12 kids and needs to send most of them to camp, plus I know he just made chasunah. The guy works like a horse at his supermarket overseer job, but still, how much money can he make? So I mentally scroll through the names of people as I drive slowly through the bungalow colony and pass screen door after screen door.

Tillerman! That’s who I’ll start with. He’s a successful realtor, she works for some government special ed agency. I think they’re pretty well-off. If I can cross the first family off the list right away it will be great.

I can probably knock right now, because Tillerman has a flexible schedule with his realty job, so he’s usually up in the country already Wednesday night, unless he has a showing.

Sure enough, Tillerman opens the door himself when I knock, and he looks like he’s been hanging around over a coffee.

“Hey, Yossi, want to let me in?” I say in the friendliest tone I can manage. But the darkness that settles into his eyes as soon as he sees me tells me he knows exactly what I’m here for…and that he has little interest in my errand.

“What are you here for?” he asks suspiciously from the other side of the screen door.

“Umm, you know, the summer’s finishing, so I wanted to ask-“

“You want my money?” Tillerman demands. “I don’t have the cash yet. I’ll pay next week. Tell Shmili to wait a little longer, okay?”

“You know, the season is almost over,” I try lamely, but Tillerman’s direct approach has left me winded. What’s up with the guy?

“Yeah, yeah, I’m gonna pay, just give me a little time to put everything together. You’re

too nervous about money, Yoeli. Stop it. You know I’m good for the money.”

I shrug. “As long as you know how much you need to still pay,” I say.

Tillerman nods, and I wave him goodbye. So there was one fruitless endeavor to report to Shmili about. One day I would get an assistant to handle this. I could manage a bungalow colony better than anyone else, but when it comes to collecting money, I’m just not made for it.

My heart’s not in it as I make a few more attempts to meet with late payers. Some are not home, others fob me off, more politely than Tillerman though.

I feel sympathy for all of them. And when I come home, I feel mostly resentment. To Shmili Green, for being so busy with collecting the money right now, when there’s still a nice amount of time left to the summer, and to Tillerman, for showering me with his blunt words.

So what if it sometimes takes until the middle of the winter for me to get everyone’s full payment? I always get Shmili the money in the end. And Tillerman could have been nicer than that. If he’s paying already, let him pay up now, and let him be nice about it. Did he accuse me of being nervous about money? Here were two people who had no reason in the world to stress about money and look at their behavior in this situation.

I come home exhausted, although I didn’t do any work today. ***

Shmili Green speaks:

Yoeli’s a great manager, he really is. But when you’re not the boss, no matter how much you crunch the numbers, you never know how much money the owner is really making.

There’s a huge income coming in from the rental bungalows every year, but the expenses eat away at like 85% of it. Sometimes I even wonder if it’s still worth it financially. But I love the atmosphere that this cozy, non-pressured bungalow colony has, unlike so many others that have social pressure through the roof. My family enjoys it, I enjoy it, and for two months of the year it’s not a bad income. The lump of cash that comes in helps me with the rest of my businesses.

Raincoats and umbrellas, rain boots and sweaters for the cold come out of the boxes under the bunkbeds, and the kids get outfitted in their gear. They’ll be thoroughly splashed up before day camp at this rate, but Kreindy’s easygoing enough about these things.

“Tatty, can I get a ride on your golf cart to day camp?” Sruly asks. He’s too big for jumping in mud puddles.

“Sure,” I say generously. Being the children of the bungalow colony manager means getting golf cart trips often enough for it to lose its excitement. But staying out of the rain and mud is definitely a perk.

Of course, once Sruly thinks of the idea, none of the other kids want to be left behind, so it looks like I’m on chauffeur duty this morning.

The golf cart squelches through the mud, which splatters over the wheels and sides. This vehicle is going to need a good cleaning after the rain is over.

After my last day camp run, I start heading back to my bungalow. As I rev the engine, I see Shmili Green heading in my direction.

My heart falls a little.

Shmili Green is my boss, the owner of this bungalow colony. Don’t ask me why I ever took a job managing a colony where the owner takes a bungalow on premises, because it’s not fun having my boss around to rate my performance all the time.

“Yoeli, what’s doing?” he calls out, walking over to me with his hands in his pocket.

“Good, Baruch Hashem,” I say. “Here, want a ride in the golf cart?”

Shmili swings himself into the seat near me, uncomfortably close.

“Such a rain,” he remarks conversationally. “We’ll have flooding from here to tomorrow with this rain.”

“Nah,” I say. “This rain is nothing. It’s not gonna flood anything.”

Shmili grunts without answering, and he points out to the end field, the vast grassy area past the circle of bungalows.

“Let’s go check out what that field is up to,” he says.

I hit the pedal just a little too hard and send us shooting to the middle of the field, the mud splashing all the way up to the windshield.

Good thing this golf cart comes with some kind of windshield.

I ease off and start cruising. “Pretty wet,” I concede.

“Nu, Yoeli,” Shmili says, cutting straight to the chase, “the summer is almost over. When is everyone here going to pay up?”

“There’s still two weeks left till the end of the summer, don’t be so worried,” I say languidly. He knows I like to be chilled and I don’t like asking people for the money. We have a really good crowd here in the colony, and I know everyone is going to pay up eventually. Even if it takes until the middle of the winter.

Shmili purses his lips. He’s looking at the field, but he obviously couldn’t care less about how muddy it is.

He looks stressed for some reason, but I can’t imagine why. Before the season even starts, everyone pays a huge deposit just to get to come up. A lot of the renters pay up fully then, too. What’s left is a small percent of his total income.

Shmili knows I hate going around and collecting the balance from people while they’re still enjoying their summer vacation. I mamash take away all the fun just by driving up to their bungalow. There’s no reason why the final collection can’t wait until the last week of the summer.

“Look, it’s Thursday, and it’s raining. Between both of those reasons you should be able to find everyone at home.”

“True,” I concede, still puzzled. But Shmili looks determined. If I want to make sure no one leaves before their balance is fully paid up I really should start making the rounds now. He’s right. There goes my rainy vacation. I turn the golf cart around and head back into the bungalow colony proper.

“Look, you’re a very good manager,” Shmili offers as I near his bungalow. “But you can’t be so scared of asking people for money. You could think you were schnorring, or something. It’s not such a big deal. You don’t have to feel so bad for this one and that one that they can’t really afford this summer vacation and you’re nebach taking the money from them. They wanted to come? Now they need to pay up.”

How Many Sides to a Coin?

If I had to write a job description for this position, I honestly wouldn’t know what to write.

It includes everything from coaching a crowd through a crisis (think fires, unexpected power outages, storms,) being a handyman on a moment’s notice, collecting and budgeting money, and mediating fights between neighbors.

Oh, and of course, actually managing the bungalow colony on a day-to-day basis. Which, on a rainy day like today, is fairly quiet and simple.

Everyone hates rainy days in the bungalow colony, and I don’t blame them. All the kids are cooped up inside and the glorious sunshine we came here to enjoy is nowhere to be seen.

But I’m enjoying this opportunity to have a quiet breakfast with my family, as nobody’s expecting anything to get done in the rain anyway. None of the maintenance men need supervision, because nothing’s getting fixed now, and if a washing machine is broken in the laundry room, I won’t know about it because no one’s doing laundry in this weather anyway.

“It’s dewishes!” little Suri announces as my wife feeds her bits of the sunny side egg. She beams when everyone chuckles.

“Who wants to go jump in the puddles after breakfast?” my wife Kreindy offers the kids. The cheers that meet her question give her the answer – everyone wants to go jump in the mud puddles.

The area covered by a diaper is at risk because it’s warm and moist, making a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and yeast. These rashes can be found within the creases of the skin. And you might notice red dots scattered around the creases.

Prevention

The best way to prevent diaper rash is to keep the diaper area clean and dry. A few simple strategies can help decrease the likelihood of diaper rash developing on your baby’s skin.

Change diapers often. Remove wet or dirty diapers promptly.

Rinse your baby’s bottom with warm water as part of each diaper change. Be gentle.

Gently pat the skin dry with a clean towel or let it air dry. Don’t scrub your baby’s bottom. After changing diapers, wash your hands well.

Fasten diapers securely but not too tight. A diaper that allows some airflow helps prevent diaper rashes. Give your baby’s bottom more time without a diaper.
