AThe fact that you are already questioning yourself shows that you are a deep thinker and that you really want to stick to your goals and remain committed. Here are some pointers to keep in mind: • Commit to change- Don’t think too much. Instead, commit to a decision, act on it, and move yourself forward. A lot of people tend to make “sorta kinda” decisions: “I’ll do this… someday.” Here’s the secret behind why people don’t follow through: The reason people don’t commit to a decision is that they don’t act on it. When you’re committed to change, life starts to look different. You stop fearing what might happen and instead embrace it. So, what if you fail? At least you learned something – that means you’ve grown. By shifting the way you approach things and realizing that only you can make a difference in your own life, you’ll change the way you think about yourself and the story you’re living.

• Fight your fear of failure- So often we sit around, thinking about how unhappy we are about one thing or another. Here’s a secret: the only person capable of changing your life for the better is you. You are the only person who can go to the gym, change your sleeping habits, or cut sugar out of your diet. It starts with self-doubt. “Maybe I shouldn’t really do this?” we think.

“Maybe it’s not a good idea?” We ask ourselves repeatedly if we really should bother lifting weights or eating better. It’s not going to work anyway, is it? You’ve tried it before, and it didn’t work then. Failing would be terrible, so you don’t even try. The key to following through when you’re committed to change is to fight off your fear of failure. Of course, you’re afraid; any sort of change can be frightening. But if you fail to even try, then you’ll be exactly where you’ve always been. You might not fail, but you also won’t grow.

• Find a mentor- You don’t have to do this alone. Committing to change is easier when you face it with someone who’s been there. A mentor can also help you with the accountability component. Your mentor can support you and check in on you to see how you are doing. Your mentor can be your spouse, friend, nutritionist/health coach, or anyone you like!

• Start small- Once you are clear with what you want to work on, I like to reference Tony Robin’s “SMART goals for your health”.

SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, and realistic goals set within a time frame. Applying the acronym to your efforts will help you break down specific action steps, so you have a clear path to follow. If your goal is to exercise more

by walking or biking to work, the SMART way to go about it is to set miniature milestones for yourself. Give yourself a few months to walk or bike to work full-time. Your first step towards that goal will be to research the routes you can take and how long they are. Your next step will be to set one day a week aside to do so. Once you feel comfortable and get into a good routine, then you progress to two days per week and keep building until you reach your goal of reaching work without using your car. SMART goal setting is effective because it prompts you to set hard deadlines that keep you accountable and makes it easy for you to see your progress.

Remember! People don’t achieve repeated success because they’re lucky. They achieve repeated success because they’ve found something that works – a formula, a strategy, or a tactic – and they’ve repeated it, adjusting as necessary. You can do that too and reach the goal you are trying to attain! It is also important to remember that what works for one will not work for another. Your sister might love tying her sneakers and running to the gym at 6:00 in the morning, while you feel great when you work out at home, once your children are in bed for the night. Do what works for you and stick to it!

Angry that Martin doesn’t want to hurt innocent Arabs, Dan breaks up his friendship with him.

Martin finds emails to Michoel Perl asking him to confirm huge food and clothing orders and stipends, all for “his families.” Martin uses Perl’s credit card to confirm and pay for most of the orders, but he pays with his own money for the rest of it.

CHAPTER THIRTY

Martin rubbed his eyes and stared at the table. He’d fallen asleep, and it was no wonder. He was in a severe sleep deficit from these past few days.

The conclusion of the day was that in another month, the clothing sale for needy families would be held at the Ohr Chaim hall. The clothing suppliers were requesting that Mr. Perl contact the directors of the hall to finalize the date.

This assuaged Martin’s conscience a bit. If Perl himself had arranged most of the matters, then clearly, he’d planned to pay for it.

The vouchers for the chicken would come straight here to the house, and Perl was supposed to send them to the families. Martin had already leafed through the

binder in the drawer, and it had not been a problem to find the list of beneficiaries and their addresses.

He would do it—no problem.

Unless, of course, Perl would suddenly return from this neverending visit to Mexico.

Maybe the time had come to resume trying to figure out what had happened to him.

Martin stood up and stretched his arms to loosen his muscles.

As a first step, he could look for something in the house relating to Mexico. Letters, books, people’s names…

Wait–what about that message that had appeared the first time he’d opened the computer? The message for the anonymous “Hinda”? It was surely that same Hinda who had visited with her husband and nearly broken down the door, until he’d had to scare her off with threats that he’d call the police.

The email message had said that she should reach out to a certain person if Perl would disappear, but he was sure that that address was in America, not in Mexico.

His phone rang.

“Hello?” he answered, still stretching his left arm. Up, down, bend, and roll backward. It wasn’t Dan’s number; who could be looking for him?

“You spoke to my friend a little bit ago?” It sounded like a teenager.

“Who is this?”

“A friend of the guy you spoke to before.”

“If you know that I spoke to him, what is the question about?” “Nothing. I just wanted to make you an offer.”

“Nu?” He stopped exercising his arm.

“Remember when you went out with us once, at night? We’re going to do it again. Do you want to join us?”

“What’s involved?” Martin asked cautiously. This was a trap. It was not them. Or it was a loyalty test, and it was them.

“Regular stuff. Slash as many tires as we can, and maybe also some exposed water pipes, and spray graffiti on the walls. You have other ideas? But no arson; we don’t do

Graffiti on the walls. What would they write—“Death to the Arabs”?

If he didn’t want to do that, why write it?

He was better off doing more effective things in his spare time, like searching for clues to Michoel Perl’s whereabouts, for example.

“I don’t think I’m interested,” he said quietly.

“Why not?”

“First of all, I don’t want to take the risk. Second, I don’t think it’s right.”

“Why? Because it won’t help?”

“Well, that’s also true.”

“And what else?”

Martin didn’t answer.

The silence stretched on for a few more moments, and then the other person ended the call.

The tiny office of Yaron Kornblit was extremely crowded. Yaron would never be able to get a handle on the mess that always surrounded him, yet he was still an excellent agent. Although none of the physical elements around him had a fixed place, the details in his head were amazingly organized in list form. He didn’t miss a thing. Someone knocked on the door of the little room, and Yaron raised his eyes from the report that he had been perusing. “Yes?” he murmured.

Gil squeezed himself inside. “I just spoke to Shaker.”

“Nu, is he preparing a tasty shake for us?”

“No. He may have suspected something, but I’m not sure.”

“What was the subject of the

conversation?”

“I offered him to join us.”

“Us.”

Gil laughed and moved the plastic chair, considering whether the conversation would be long enough to make it worth clearing the piles of stuff from the chair and sitting down. “Dan and Co., of course.”

“What would you have done if he would have agreed?”

“Cancelled it a few minutes later. His conversation with Dan was awful, for him, and in their place, I would cut off contact with him.”

“Why?” That comment put all of Yaron’s senses on alert.

“Because he didn’t talk like one of them at all. Either he’s trying to put on a front, or there’s been a significant change somewhere. Or…” He hesitated for a second.

“Or it’s not our Shaker in the first place.”

“Let’s review all the options.” Yaron pulled a brochure, with a centerfold photo of many people, out of the pile next to him, and placed it atop the report he was working on. “He isn’t at this conference,” he said, tapping on the stiff cardstock. “I can’t decide if it means something or not. So, what were we saying? Oh, yes, let’s review the options you listed: When you say ‘trying to put on a front,’ I understand what you mean. But what kind of change are you talking about?”

“It sounds like he’s sorry about that incident, and he claims there was no intent involved. He thinks that no one should sink to the level of terrorists. And most remarkable— that those who are looking for him are right, on their part.” He smiled. “Interesting statement.” Yaron

looked for a stapler to attach the brochure with the photo to the report he’d written up a few minutes earlier. Of course, he couldn’t find one. He sufficed with pushing both items into a plastic bag and placing them on a side shelf. “The main thing is, how long did you talk for?”

Gil smiled again. “Enough time.”

“Do you have his location?”

“Yes. Looks like he is in a house. Should I send a team over?”

Yaron was quiet for a minute. “Not yet,” he said, scratching behind his ear. “Not yet.”

Hinda walked into the hall in Bnei Brak, clutching her small, old evening bag. A few of the sequins on the side had already fallen off, but she still liked it. Someone hurried over from the other side of the hall, grinning from ear to ear. Penina.

“Hi! How are you? I miss you!”

“Baruch Hashem, wonderful. How are you, Penina? How is it to be home?”

“It’s fine, baruch Hashem. I’m trying to manage without you. It’s not easy!” Penina laughed and led Hinda over to the mechitzah.

“Here’s Simi, with her mother-inlaw. Chevi is also here already.”

“Mazel tov! Loads of nachas!” Hinda offered her hand to Simi, who shook it politely.

“Thank you,” she said. “Amen. And here’s the little one.”

“He’s adorable!” Hinda complimented, remembering the hospital visit she and Dov had made to Penina about a month before. Dov had gone to visit Simi in the

hospital himself. Hinda had been too tired, after sending off Penina and her husband. As a parting gift to them, the night before they’d left, she’d taken Batsheva to her room for the whole night.

Now, though, she was regretting not having made the effort to join her husband in visiting Simi. “Do you have a place to sit?” Simi asked.

“I’m sure I’ll find one easily,” Hinda replied with a smile. “Don’t be busy hosting me now, Simi. You’re busy with your little one—it’s fine.”

Simi replied with a grateful smile and turned back to the conversation with her mother-inlaw.

Someone patted Hinda’s shoulder. “Mazel tov,” she said. She looked like a carbon copy of Penina, except for the little dimple on her right check.

“Mazel tov!” she said. “How are you, Chevi?” It was a good thing Penina had already clued her in to the arrivals, because Dov’s daughters all strongly resembled each other.

“Baruch Hashem.” Chevi gripped the hand of her two-year-old. “Say hello!” she instructed.

“Hello, Aryeh!” Hinda greeted him. Most of Dov’s grandchildren were girls, and of the three princes, two were named Aryeh, after Dov’s

father.

“You remember his name!” Chevi exclaimed. “Come here, Aryeh, don’t run away from me!” She began to chase the little boy. Penina called something while rocking her beautiful carriage— Hinda had vaguely heard how much Dov had paid for it—and Chevi laughed. Then Penina began waving vigorously in the direction of the hall’s entrance. Another woman entered, and made a beeline for Penina and her carriage. A moment later, she turned around, as if Penina had just whispered to her to be polite to Hinda.

Which daughter was this one? Not Chevi…not Simi…obviously not Penina… What was Dov’s fourth daughter’s name?

Yael! That was it.

“Nice to see you, Yael.” Hinda greeted her.

Penina was glowing like a mechuteiniste. “You brought the kids?” she asked her sister.

“I only brought Aryeh; he’s with Chaim,” Yael said, pointing with her chin to the men’s section, where her husband stood. “And the rest are in school. Don’t I deserve a morning off? Come, let’s wash, okay? I’m starving, and I don’t see the bris starting yet. Uncle Feivish

isn’t here, and I know they want him to be sandek.”

“Great, so I’m also going to wash,” Penina announced. “Can you watch Batsheva for a minute?” she asked Hinda, as she straightened the baby’s blanket. “There’s our table.” She pointed to the corner table and flitted over to the sinks, near the entrance.

Hinda led the carriage toward the empty table. There were purses on some of the chairs, and she didn’t want to sit down before being sure of what was happening here. If she wasn’t mistaken, this diaper bag matched the carriage of today’s guest of honor, Simi’s baby. There was also a stack of three snowywhite cloth diapers there. The elegant bag on the chair beside it surely belonged to Simi’s motherin-law. And the other three seats would obviously be for Penina, Chevi, and Yael.

Okay, so where did that leave her? Which seat was she supposed to occupy?

As she stood there contemplating the chairs before her, the mohel suddenly came in. (Uncle Feivish must have just arrived.) Hinda breathed a tiny sigh of relief; at least for now, the awkwardness over the seats had been deferred.

ICE STORMS

Recap: Mrs. Grossman faints when she hears the sounds of someone in her house.

Meanwhile, Avrumi and Esther Mindy are discussing Esther Mindy’s plan over Melava Malka. Suddenly, Avrumi gets a call from his mother, and when he hears what’s going on, he tells her he’ll be right over. He also calls the police.

The police officers are already there when Avrumi and Esther Mindy show up at the Grossman house. After a quick search of the house, an officer comes running in with the news that there is a man lying unconscious in the driveway.

Chapter 28

Flying was a routine part of Mr. Grossman’s life. It had never given him any pause. So why was his stomach in knots now, on this absolutely ordinary flight to England?

It didn’t help that Ronny was the one accompanying him, the employee he was currently least comfortable with. Mr. Grossman looked over at Ronny’s seat in the next aisle. Ronny was completely engrossed in his headphones, eyes closed and fingers tapping his seat’s armrests.

Mr. Grossman shifted in his seat again. Why was he so restless? He should be sleeping so that his wits were about him the next day at the business meeting.

Instead, Mr. Grossman took out his tablet and opened up Finder Z’s profile. With narrowed eyes, he looked through the reports again.

He had to concede it sounded tempting.

Tempting enough to endure this flight for it?

Irritably, Mr. Grossman shut the tablet. Come to think of it, why hadn’t they requested that Finder Z’s CEO fly in to America to meet them? That would have been standard enough.

Because you wanted to get a feel of the place before investing in it, Mr. Grossman reminded himself. Having the CEO fly in just wouldn’t be enough for that.

Finally, Mr. Grossman admitted to himself why he was so skittish. It’s just all those ProMedical threats that are scaring you off. You almost wish you’d never gotten involved with Dr. Bloom, don’t you?

Mr. Grossman quashed that thought. No. Whatever happened, helping Dr. Bloom had been the right thing to do. And a sound

business decision besides, even if they never ended up seeing the returns they’d originally hoped to see.

All the terror was simply showing him that Dr. Bloom was actually a threat to them, to the drug companies that would stand to lose millions due to ProMedical’s discovery. That was a good sign, he reminded himself, as he’d done so many times in the past. The stronger the threats, the closer Dr. Bloom was to his goal.

“Good,” she said. “And interesting.”

Gila Batsheva looked at her, her face open and interested, the question in her eyes as she waited for Raizy to elaborate.

“I really liked your book,” Raizy said. “It helped me understand better what you explained to me about survival. And-”

She stopped speaking, but Gila Batsheva didn’t rush to fill the silence Raizy left behind. After taking a moment to gather her thoughts, Raizy went on.

“And I think I understand my relationship with my mother better now.”

“That’s wonderful,” Gila Batsheva said sincerely.

“-Yeah.” Raizy said, letting out a breath. “It is. It’s like, of course I used denial as my defense mechanism. It was the only way I could stay sane. Admitting what I was going through while it was happening would have destroyed me.”

Gila Batsheva nodded. “Yes. Exactly.”

Raizy let her words settle in the air of the room, settle into her own mind where they rested so perfectly in place of the confusion she’d been feeling until now.

“But now,” she said, looking at Gila Batsheva steadily, “now I think I’m ready for the next step.”

“What do you mean?”

Raizy swallowed. “I’ve been able to feel and acknowledge the pain, coming here,” she said. “Now I think I’m ready to move on.”

Gila Batsheva leaned forward on her arm, listening intently. “You’re ready to move on,” she repeated. “Yes. In your book, you describe three levels, right? You wrote about the Inuits and physical survival mechanisms. Psychology taught you about emotional survival mechanisms. And when you became Jewish, you learned about spiritual survival.”

“I see you spent a lot of time on my book,” Gila Batsheva said with a smile.

Raizy half-smiled back, blushing slightly. “Yes, I did,” she admitted. “You described how each of these levels has a defective mechanism and a healthy mechanism. So denial was my unhealthy survival mechanism until now. I think I’m ready to practice healthy emotional survival mechanism.”

Gila Batsheva smiled, a slow, full smile. “Wow, I’m impressed,” she said. Raizy blushed, but Gila Batsheva didn’t look away, just kept smiling at her with eyes full of admiration.

“I don’t give my book out just like that,” Gila Batsheva said. “It’s heavy, and deep. Sometimes I’m not sure that it will be understood in the right way.”

Raizy nodded.

“Sometimes people want to immediately jump levels, heading straight for the spiritual aspects that I describe in detail. But here, you’ve zeroed in on the exact point that you’re holding by, and that shows a huge amount of self-awareness. A long way from denial.”

Gila Batsheva looked at Raizy. “I’ll say it again: I’m really impressed.”

“Thanks,” Raizy said simply. “I really did spend a lot of time on the book. It was a great tool for me to understand our work here better.”

“Yes,” Gila Batsheva said. “So tell me more about your week.”

Raizy thought back to the week that had passed.

Suddenly, her phone rang, loud and strident. Raizy looked surprised as she fumbled in her bag for her phone.

That was weird. She never usually bothered shutting her phone, because there wasn’t really anyone who would call her during this time. Yaakov was in first seder. Her family and friends over the ocean were still asleep. So who…?

Raizy gave a quick peek at the screen as she shut the ringer. And her eyes went wide.

“It’s my mother,” she said, the words out of her mouth before she could stop them. “That’s-that’s really weird. It’s five o’clock in the morning there!”

Raizy’s eyes darted from side to side. “Do you think-do you think she knows I’m here?” It was an illogical thought, and Raizy knew it. But somehow, that was the first thought that made sense to her in the moment.

“Do you want to take the call?” Gila Batsheva asked solicitously. Raizy shook her head, regaining some of her control. “No,” she said. “There isn’t so much time left. I’ll call her back.”

But her attention was shot for the rest of the session. She couldn’t concentrate at all.

Dr. Bloom’s bedside manner wasn’t famous without reason. And visiting his office was no different in that way.

Mr. Vazquez entered Dr. Bloom’s office hesitantly. Having been to more than one of these highly regarded specialists, he was used to lots of haughty airs and brusque manners. But Dr. Bloom had already proven himself to be different, he reminded himself.

This time was no exception. “So how have you been behaving, Mr. Vazquez?” Dr. Bloom asked mock-sternly as Mr. Vazquez took his seat in front of Dr. Bloom’s desk.

Mr. Vazquez cracked a smile. “No secrets around here, you know, your test results tell me the whole story anyway.” Dr. Bloom continued as he pulled up Mr. Vazquez’s latest scans on the screen at his left elbow.

Dr. Bloom had already spent hours analyzing these results, the first tests that were done following a round of his treatment protocol.

“How’s your little Ally doing?” Dr. Bloom asked as he waited for his screen to finish loading.

A light turned on in Mr. Vazquez’s eyes. “She’s still charming everyone she meets,” he said proudly.

Dr. Bloom smiled. “I’m sure she is,” he murmured, eyes going back to his screen.

“So, are you ready for some good news, my friend?” Dr. Bloom asked genially.

“Good news?” Mr. Vazquez asked. His voice trembled uncertainly. “Yes,” Dr. Bloom nodded. “There is good news, and that is that there are no signs of further growth or metastasis since your last scan.”

“And that means-“

“It doesn’t mean that the treatment is working, completely, yet,” Dr. Bloom said cautiously. “But I would say that this is a very encouraging sign. All your tests up till now showed aggressive continued growth even after treatment, right? So seeing that the growth is slowing down is wonderful news.”

Mr. Vazquez looked as if he were afraid to smile.

“So, of course we’d like to see the rest of the tumor shrink and go away,” Dr. Bloom said, “but even this much is a real reason to feel hopeful. Mr. Vazquez, I think you can be very happy with these results so far.”

“Really?” Mr. Vazquez asked, feeling a little kid in need of reassurance.

“Yes,” Dr. Bloom confirmed once again. “I would say the first round of treatment can be considered a success, and I’d recommend continuing with an additional treatment round. Would you like to sign your consent to that?”

Mr. Vazquez nodded, his eyes shining. Of course. It was easy to sign these forms, for a treatment that was so targeted it had felt as gentle as a hydrating IV drip on his body.

“Okay, we’ll get you started on that then,” Dr. Bloom said with a smile. He didn’t show his own level of excitement openly. But seeing these results and getting them analyzed by his colleagues, who had all agreed with him, marked a red-letter milestone for him.

“What are you doing?” the paramedic asked, brusquely pushing away his hand. “He can’t be touched! We need to take him in to the emergency room, ASAP.”

“Garrison, you go along in the ambulance, then,” the police chief ordered the officer standing closest to him. “Keep an eye on him. We don’t know if he’s the perpetrator of the break-in or a victim.”

As they transferred the patient to a stretcher, Avrumi came hesitantly over.

“Hey, you’re Grossman, right?” the police officer asked as he saw him come close. “Do you recognize this fellow?”

Avrumi took one quick, terrified glance at the prone form and shook his head.

“No, Officer, I don’t recognize him at all.”

It’s been a beautiful month, with many meals. Now that we’re back to routine and back to making supper we can all use some fresh supper ideas… GITTY NEUMAN

Although you will need to use a pot for this recipe, it will take only 20 minutes from start to finish.

INGREDIENTS:

Chicken:

1 lb cutlets, cubed

4 Tablespoons cornstarch

½ tsp salt

2 Tablespoons oil, for frying

1 onion, thinly sliced

1 red pepper, cut into thin strips

8 oz frozen broccoli (3-4 cups)

Sauce:

2 Tablespoons brown sugar

3 Tablespoons honey

3 Tablespoons soy sauce

½ teaspoon garlic powder

1 Tablespoon cornstarch

4 Tablespoons water

DIRECTIONS:

1. In a large Ziploc bag, combine chicken with cornstarch and salt. Shake to coat.

2. Heat oil in a large saute pan over mediumhigh heat. Add chicken pieces and cook for just 2 minutes per side.

3. Add vegetables to the pan and cook another 5 minutes, stirring frequently.

4. Add brown sugar, honey, soy sauce and garlic powder to the pan and stir to coat the chicken and vegetables.

5. Make a slurry with cornstarch and water and add to the pan. Lower heat and simmer for an additional 5 minutes, keeping the pot uncovered while it simmers. You can simmer it a few minutes longer if you prefer the vegetables softer.

6. Serve with ramen noodles or rice.

Note: You can sub the listed vegetables with vegetables of your choice. However, if you omit the broccoli you may need to add some more water to the sauce (since the broccoli gives off plenty of liquid).

OVEN FRIED RICE

INGREDIENTS:

1 cup Uncle Ben’s white rice (do not substitute with another brand)

2 Tablespoons oil

2 cups water

2 Tablespoons soy sauce

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon sugar

½ teaspoon garlic powder

1 egg, beaten, optional

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 400°.

2. Combine rice and oil in a 9x13 pan. Spread in a (mostly) even layer. Toast the rice in the oven for approximately 15 minutes, until rice is caramel colored.

3. Remove pan from oven and add remaining ingredients.

4. Cover with foil. Use a sharp knife to puncture a few slits in the top of the foil.

5. Bake for 1 hour. If there is still liquid in the pan after 1 hour, bake for an additional 10-15 minutes.

6. Optional: Make scrambled eggs in a small frying pan. Cut eggs into tiny pieces. Toss with the rice.

Chezkel was a poor man. He barely had a ruble to his name. But he had a dream. He wanted to own property in town. Though he lived off communal charity, he saved up coin after coin until he felt he had enough. Then he approached one of the wealthiest men in town.

“Please,” he said, “I would like a share in your estate. Can I buy a peg on the wall of your home? I’ll pay you one hundred rubles!”

It was a funny request, but to the pauper it meant a lot. Even though he kept getting a “no,” he didn’t give up and asked again and again if he could buy a hook on the wall. Finally, the rich man agreed to sell him the peg. He just wanted the pauper off his back.

To his surprise, Chezkel took full advantage of his “property” in the home…

Right away, Chezkel brought some clothes to hang on his peg. The rich man had no choice but to open the door and let him in so he could access his hook. The next day, Chezkel returned to

remove the clothes and hang up another item.

And so it was, day after day, that Chezkel kept coming back to bring things to and from his little piece of “real estate.” To the rich man’s family, it was nerve-wracking and increasingly bothersome, to say the least. But what could they do? A deal was a deal.

But then, one day, Chezkel came with an animal carcass. Within hours, the hanging carcass diffused a smell that made it impossible for the family to remain at home.

That was just what Chezkel was waiting for! As soon as the family members went out, he settled in. The entire upscale home was now in his control.

This is the tactic of the yetzer hara. Though at first we may refuse to give him that little peg, repeated begging, pleading, and persuading could weaken our resolve. And once he has that little opening, the yetzer hara has his foot in our door. Soon, our whole house could be his!

P O L I O : WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW

What is polio?

Polio is caused by a highly contagious virus. Though most people who get infected with polio virus don't feel sick at all, others develop a sore throat, fever, headache, stomach pain or vomiting. Still others, about 1 in 25 infected persons, develop meningitis a stiff neck and severe muscle pain caused when the virus infects their brain and spinal cord. Approximately 1 out of 200 people develop irreversible paralysis, known as paralytic poliomyelitis. If the muscles we use to breathe become paralyzed, the person can die.

How does polio spread?

Polio spreads from person to person. It spreads when the stool or respiratory secretions of an infected person are introduced into the mouth of another person directly or through contaminated hands, objects, food, or water. The virus reproduces in the intestines and throat and is passed in the stool. Infected people without symptoms can still spread the virus. People with polio may be contagious as long as the virus is present in the throat and stool. The virus remains in the throat for about one to two weeks and in the stool for about three to six weeks after the onset of illness.

I've heard that people can get polio from the vaccine. How does this happen? There are two types of polio vaccines. One, called “inactivated polio vaccine” (IPV), is given as a shot. It contains dead polio virus that cannot reproduce in people. This is the version used in the U.S. The other, called “oral polio vaccine,” (OPV) is given by mouth and is not available in the US. It contains live, weakened polio virus. Because the virus can still reproduce at low levels, recently vaccinated people can shed the virus in their stools. Very rarely, the weakened OPV vaccine viruses can regain the ability to infect the brain or spinal cord. This can cause paralytic poliomyelitis in the person who had recently received OPV or in their unvaccinated close contacts (1 person per 2.6 million doses). If such a virus begins to circulate among unvaccinated people, polio outbreaks can occur.

So, is there a chance that my child gets polio from the vaccine if I choose to vaccinate?

No. OPV is still given in some countries, including Israel, but it is no longer used in the U.S. IPV is the only polio vaccine that has been given in the U.S. since 2000. Because the virus in IPV cannot make more copies of itself, it cannot cause polio, either in the person receiving the vaccine or those around them.

I keep my home clean and am careful with food in my kitchen, isn’t this protective against polio?

Household hygiene and safe food handling practices are helpful in preventing infections that spread on food, such as salmonella, but polio virus is different. It is very contagious and passes easily between people, even those without symptoms.

I give my child good nutrition. Doesn’t this protect my child from actually getting sick from polio?

A healthy diet is important for your children’s well being and for building a healthy immune system. But even strong, healthy children got polio and some suffered complications, such as paralysis and death, prior to the introduction of polio vaccines. Polio vaccination with IPV is the only clear way to protect your child from paralytic poliomyelitis.

How effective is the IPV vaccine?

The IPV vaccine is safe and effective and protects almost all children from paralysis (more than 99 out of 100) who get the recommended number of doses Children should get four doses of polio vaccine, given at 2 months, 4 months, 6 to 18 months, and 4 6 years of age. Side effects of the vaccine can include pain, redness or swelling at the site of the shot. These typically resolve after 1 2 days. Adults who were fully vaccinated as children and who are at risk of exposure now should get one adult booster dose vaccine.

My baby is so young. Isn’t this vaccine just too strong for my baby? Shouldn’t I wait to vaccinate until my child is older and stronger? The recommended dose of the vaccine is the right strength for your baby The IPV vaccine has been safely given to millions of young babies throughout the U S since the mid 1950s. The vaccine schedule has been designed with consideration to both vaccine safety and disease susceptibility. As such, any time you delay a vaccine, you unnecessarily leave your baby vulnerable to disease.

Can I protect my baby from polio by breastfeeding them?

If you were vaccinated for polio, it is possible that your baby may benefit from antibodies received before birth or from breastfeeding. But even if antibodies are passed to the baby, the amount of antibodies passed on may not be enough and will only offer protection for a short time before they break down Only by vaccinating your young baby will they have their own long lived protection against this infection.

My child has a cold. Can they still be vaccinated? Yes, children experiencing mild illnesses, such as colds, a low fever, an ear infection, or mild diarrhea, can still receive a vaccine. Mild illness does not affect how well the body responds to a vaccine and vaccines do not make a mild illness worse. Children taking antibiotics can get vaccines.

A servant opened up and asked him to come inside. R' Eliuahu Chaim refused to enter the well heated house.

Having no choice, the rich host, wearing a thin robe, came to talk to the Rebbe near the open door.

The Rebbe slowly steered his host outside, into the bitter cold, and put forward his request. The host gave him a generous check and then asked him why he refused to come in. R'Eliuahu Chaim responded, "True, it is very cold out here, but if you haven't stood outside yourself, you would've never been able to understand the suffering of the poor!"

BEYOND'S AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS OFFER THE PERFECT ENVIRONMENT FOR STUDENTS TO EXCEL

Beyond is Boro Park's latest afterschool program offering children the education and activities to excel in an environment they can enjoy while being expertly guided towards excellence.

Boys eligible for P3/SETSS will receive the services they are entitled to without having to miss class or suffer the stigma of being pulled out of regular classes to receive services.

Instead, boys can join Beyond's revolutionary, specialized afterschool education center. There they will blossom under the careful tutelage of Beyond's expert, heimishe machanchim, in groups created to fit their needs or in one-on-one programs.

Beyond's experienced staff are passionate about the work they do as well as experienced in the field of education and special education.

After seeing the tremendous demand for an after-school program, Beyond announced its

opening for boys nine through thirteen. Due to popular demand, the program has since expanded to include ages six through eight. Starting on October 31st, students in need of assistance and those with too much afterschool time on their hands will benefit from Beyond's social and academic services.

Beyond will offer homework help, and math and reading comprehension assistance. There will also be a Mishnayos program for the older boys focusing on understanding the Mishnayos, the limudim, shoiroshim, and loshon kodesh. Arts and crafts are also included. Snacks are provided.

Transportation to the facility's central location is available as Beyond makes everything easier so homes will run more smoothly with the least stress possible.

"We are very excited to launch this innovative program," says Rabbi Meir Mandell, MSEd, cofounder of Beyond. "The

services will be of tremendous benefit to the boys who get the services they deserve without the stigma of missing class, and families will also benefit. Our goal with this program is to always go beyond - that is why not only will we provide tutoring, but boys will come away feeling good that they will be learning something extra with our program. The extracurricular activities are an added enhancement, so we know our program will include something for everyone."

The program will start after October 31st. Payments can be made privately or through P3/SETSS funding, or HCBS if eligible. Staff opportunities are also available as the program continues to grow.
