Recap: Rachelli tries to tell Tehilla a story that happened between her parents and Ahuva’s parents many years ago, but Tehilla cuts her off in middle. Pori tells Ahuva that she needs to get help regarding her new problem. In the same conversation, she reveals that they have a little sister who was left behind in Los Angeles after a tragic car accident many years ago.

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN:

Soaring high, aiming high…The old lyrics of the song I had written three years ago played itself in my mind. Letting security be your guide, the voice in my continued singing. I sat on my bed, frozen. I realized what was bothering me. Security. First, my security had come through my friendship with Ahuva. Ahuva was everything to me, filling my life with friendship and camaraderie. Later, my security was drawn from Rachelli. Is that why I subconsciously never branched out? On a subconscious level, my friends were my security blanket, and my guide- and one couldn’t trust more than one guide at a time.

The final push must come from you. When I had written those lines, I had been watching the little girls pumping into the air on swings. The hardest push was the last one- the one that didn’t require me to push them, because they had found the strength to throw their feet into the air and push on their own. Maybe it’s time to start trusting myself again. The thought formulated as I slowly wove the threads. Three years ago, I trusted myself. I trusted my inner gut feelings, I trusted my parents, and I trusted my classmates and best friend. All that disappeared in less than a minute- the minute that I overheard the conversation in my principal’s office.

I stopped believing that I was capable of moving forward. I stopped trusting people and lost faith in humanity. But slowly, I had healed. Piece by piece, I had found different parts of myself in Bnos Batsheva, parts of myself that I either lost before or never knew existed in me.

But now, it all came rushing back. The stinging rejection. From high schools. My own camp! From my favorite friend in the world.

Deep down, there was one rejection that hurt most. My own. I had rejected myself, and that rejection destroyed and eroded most of all.

Brocha was a beautiful child. Mrs. Sternstein’s hands shook. Why did she even need this? It was one of the few precious photos from before. Brocha’s green eyes were sparkling, and she was standing in front of a garden of roses. It was on Chol Hamoed, she suddenly remembered. It had been a family trip- the perfect family. A lump rose in her throat. They had been a perfect family.

That’s why, when the tragedy happened, she had taken it so hard. She admitted it to herselfgrowing up, her life had always been perfect. She was smart, popular, and talented. She was always at the top of her class and always had wonderful friends. She had gotten married right when she came home from Seminary and raised a wonderful family.

She never had a hard day in her life. That’s why, when the news arrived, she couldn’t take it. She couldn’t understand how her pleasant life had been destroyed in an instant. But it happened, and her precious daughter wasn’t coming back. At least not the daughter that she knew. The memories flooded her mind, and it was too late to stop them from coming.

“Mom! Look! I picked a pretty rose for you!”

Brocha’s eyes shone and her blond curls glinted in the sunshine.

“Oh darling,” I cooed, “I don’t know if the owners of this place let us pick flowers. “

Brocha’s face fell. “I didn’t know,” she said. “I thought that you would love the rose!”

“I do love the rose!” I told her, throwing my arms around her and hugging her fiercely. “But I don’t know if the owners let. You are the cutest girl ever and you just wanted to make your mom happy, right?”

A shadow lifted off her face. “Right, Mom! OK, let’s take pictures instead. They do let take pictures, right?”

Mrs. Sternstein shook herself back to the present. Startled, she realized that she hadn’t seen Pori walk in. She tried to hide the picture quickly.

“Mom?” Pori sat down near her mother on the couch. She fingered the photo longingly. “It’s been so many years now, Mom. I miss Brocha.” The last part came out in a whisper.

The room was silent. “I miss my sister, too.” They both looked up to face Ahuva.

“Don’t be silly, you never knew her,” her mother said.

“Oh, but I did.” Ahuva joined them on the armchair near the couch. “I had a random memory or was it a dream? I think I only had it because I was looking at old pictures.” Ahuva blushed. The only old pictures that included Brocha were in their dusty attic. “I couldn’t fall asleep after hearing about Brocha. I wanted to see more pictures, so I dug up old albums from the attic last night,” she admitted. Her mother and sister sat silently as she spoke. “I was in a grassy field. We were playing tag. I was running, running, running,” Ahuva’s eyes were far away now, and her voice took on a dreamy note.

“Then, she caught me! We giggled and giggled, even though there was nothing funny. But then, we realized that we had run too far.”

“You didn’t know where to find me,” Mrs. Sternstein breathed.

“So we decided to sit down on a bench and wait. We waited and waited.”

“And then I finally found you, with the help of the park ranger.”

Ahuva’s eyes were round. “So it wasn’t just a dream. It’s a real memory.” Her heart twisted. “Brocha. I loved my sister. Her name was Brocha, and once upon a time, she was my very best friend.” ***

Faigy. I should call Faigy. It was only the right thing to do, to check up on my cousin and see how she was doing. Even if we hadn’t been the best of friends. If I admitted it to myself, I was desperate for a listening ear. I knew that Faigy was the perfect person to call- she would give me her unbiased opinion.

I was relieved when she answered right away. “Tehilla!” She sounded genuinely happy to hear from me.

“How’s your new job?” I asked. After some polite chit-chat, I got to the point.

“Faigy? Can you do me a favor?”

I could hear Faigy’s smile through the phone. “Of course. As long as it doesn’t involve anything crazy.”

I didn’t have the energy to joke back. “It’s about my friend, Rachelli. It’s about my old friend, Ahuva.” I paused.

“But something tells me,” Faigy said, “something tells me, that most of all, this is

Faigy was right. After hearing the sorrowful chain of events, the phone line went quiet. “You there?” I asked awkwardly. Had I shared too much sensitive information? Was I making my cousin uncomfortable?

“I am here,” Faigy said. She waited a second and then continued, “but I am not sure that you will like what I have to say.”

“Just say it. It’s okay, I am used to being treated like a dishrag.” It was hard to keep the bitter edge off my voice.

“That’s the problem, Tehilla, that you make this all about you. You take everything so personally that it clouds your logic, and you have no clue how many people you can destroy like that. Worst, you are destroying yourself.”

Faigy’s voice was sharp, and it cut right through me. “Accept it, Tehilla. You had two wonderful friends in your life. But you messed up. You lost both of them. Not because of something that they did, but because of something that you assumed they did.”

My chest heaved in pain. She was right. But what should I do next? I felt like my time was up and my options were over.

“Your life doesn’t end here,” Faigy continued. “You can go ahead and form beautiful relationships. You just need to start trusting people a tiny bit more. You must give them the benefit of the doubt, even when all accusing fingers are pointing squarely at them. You have to learn to trust people. You have to renew your faith in humanity.”

I stared at my fingernails. Pressing the phone against my ear, I whispered, “Thank you.”

I am not sure how the conversation ended, the words just seemed to blur and flow around me. All I knew was that the next thing I knew, I was walking briskly towards my friend’s house. I just couldn’t afford to make the same mistake twice. Perhaps, just perhaps, there was still a way to set things straight. ***

“I don’t even know why I am letting you in.” Rachelli was cold, apathetic. “Because you want to give me another chance.” I walked in, without waiting for an invitation. It wouldn’t come.

“Rachelli, I wanted to apologize. It wasn’t right of me to run off that night. You wanted to tell me something important and I totally didn’t give you a chance. I’m sorry.”

Rachelli sat down and offered me cookies. “No thanks. Please, can you look past this? I am ready to listen now, for real.”

“I don’t know, Tehilla,” she said frankly. “I’m just not sure that things can ever be the same between us again.”

“Please, don’t talk that way. We can’t let just a glitch in the road destroy a friendship that I cherish so much.”

“But it’s not just a glitch in the road, Tehilla.” Rachelli turned her chair to face me squarely and looked me in the eye. “When will you finally get it, Tehilla, that actions have reactions? When will you understand that you can’t just do whatever you want and then expect the rest of the world to dance according to your tune?”

“I made a mistake, Rachelli. I am only human.” I clenched my fist under the table. “You can’t hold this against me forever, right?”

“You made more than one mistake. First with Ahuva, then with your mother. Then with me.” I stared at Rachelli, willing myself not to speak. Finally, I said, “Fine. So let’s say that things won’t be the same again. But I came to hear the story. Can you give me that much? Can you finish the story so that I can finally uncover the unlikely connection between you, Ahuva’s family…”

“And yourself, Tehilla,” Rachelli said, “because you are part of the story, too.”

When I walked home an hour later, my mind was in a whirl. The story so bizarre, it was something out of a storybook. I felt like I needed proof. What if Rachelli was a master liar? But I knew that she was speaking the truth. Her words rang true to my ears.

But still, as I turned the lock to the door of my house, I knew that I would need to verify it with my mother. The last piece in this broken puzzle. My mother had to insert the last piece, and the puzzle of my life would be complete, revealing a broken picture that had eluded me all along.

My heart was fragmented, it had been like that for too long.

But as I entered the door of my childhood home, my heart whispered a new song of hope. Maybe the time had come to put it all together. Maybe it was time for my broken heart to be made whole again.

Michoel begs Dr. Jerry to let him go to the nearest Jewish community for Rosh Hashanah, but Dr. Jerry refuses. Michoel realizes that he really is a prisoner here, and he speaks to Mike about finding a way to smuggle himself out of the institution.

Dov works hard to persuade Yosef to transfer to the mental health department of a frum hospital in Bnei Brak for Rosh Hashanah, and finally he is successful.

CHAPTER SIXTY TWO

“No minyan, nothing!” It was the day after Yom Kippur, and Michoel was almost crying to Hinda on Mike’s phone. “Not on Rosh Hashanah, not on Yom Kippur… what kind of Yamim Noraim did I have here?! And what will be with a sukkah?”

“I want to speak to them,” Hinda declared firmly. “Uncle Michoel, tell them I want to speak to them.”

“I don’t know if they will agree. I still don’t know if they'll agree to take Yosef, even if you decide to send him in the end… What’s doing with him, by the way?”

“Before Rosh Hashanah, he moved to Maayanei Hayeshuah in Bnei Brak, and he stayed there for all of Aseres Yemei Teshuvah, until last night. I don’t know if I can send him the way he is now, Michoel.”

“I hear… How much time have I been here, Hinda?”

“That’s a good question. You weren’t at my wedding, and that was four months ago. But I don’t know if you were in Israel then, or if you’d already left the country.”

“I think I went to Mexico,” he said slowly. “I had a wedding there... But I had planned to be back for your simchah. What’s your new husband’s name again, remind me?”

“Dov.”

“Dov,” he echoed slowly, and then fell silent.

“And I want to speak to the people there,” Hinda repeated. Michoel really sounded a bit confused, but on the other hand…it was still him.

“I can’t ask them right now. I’m on a private phone that belongs to someone who did me a favor without the management knowing. They haven’t been allowing me to make calls for some time now—maybe because I got them angry with my insistence about the Yamim Noraim, when I wanted a minyan… I don’t know, maybe they are right and something is wrong with me, and all they are trying to do is help me!”

“I…I don’t know.” Michoel’s voice trembled; he was also speaking quietly. Hinda strained to hear him. She switched on the speakerphone, but even that wasn’t enough. “I don’t know. I don’t know anything anymore! Something here doesn’t seem right, but maybe it’s me. Are you sure you can’t send Yosef here? If they agree, everything will be easy, I’m telling you. The car that will bring him will simply take both of us out together, and everything will be all right.”

“I’m thinking about a different solution, actually.” The rag in her hand stopped moving. “Maybe we should reach out to the police.”

“Which police? In Israel?”

“Yes, initially. I’ll report to them what I know from you, and they can decide who to contact in America. We have someone here who told us he’s heard of this place where you are, but it’s not clear to us where they are located. Let the police look for you and get to you.”

“But if everything is fine and legal with the place, then you’ll end up making a laughingstock of yourself.” Michoel’s voice steadied.

“I’m not afraid of making a laughingstock of myself, Michoel, if that’s what I think needs to be done.”

“And you’ll tell them that I call you without the staff here knowing?” His voice sounded choked – and awful.

“Meanwhile, it’s better not to, Hinda. I…I’m afraid that… the management here might hear about it. Are you sure you can’t send Yosef here?”

Suddenly, Hinda heard a voice behind her. She turned toward the balcony and discovered Yosef standing about six feet behind her, his eyes wide in horror.

“Uncle Michoel!” he cried, and ran toward the phone. “Please, stop! I can’t listen to you cry! I’ll come to you, really, I promise!”

“Yosef? Is that you?” Michoel’s voice sounded stronger now.

“Yes, it’s me. And right after Sukkos, I’m coming to you, to get you out of there, do you hear? By Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, you’ll be back at home!”

“We’ll talk, Yosef.” Wherever he was, Michoel smiled. Hinda, on the other hand, felt like there were thousands of flies buzzing around her mind in a cacophonous choir. “I love you, my devoted nephew. You haven’t changed… I’ll talk to Ima, and we’ll figure out how you can come to me, okay?”

“Fine,” Yosef agreed, and went back to the balcony. Hinda quickly picked up the handset; she wanted to whisper to her uncle that Yosef had indeed remained as dedicated and loving as always, but he really was in no shape to fly to America right then. Unless she would join him?

“Listen, Michoel,” she said hesitantly, only to discover that her words were met with a dial tone.

“First of all, you need a passport,” Dov said from the ladder. They had to get Yosef off the ladder he had climbed, somehow.

“I have one!” His fingers tapped a staccato on the wall behind him.

“But it’s long expired," Hinda said. "We last traveled out of the country when you were a little boy, Yosef, and a child's passport is only good for five years.”

She stood at the doorway to the porch that was now decked in s'chach and white wall coverings. Martin was sitting silently on a stool in the far corner, holding a small box of nails.

“We can renew it,” Yosef insisted.

“Sure we can,” Dov agreed. “What do we need for that? To go to the American embassy?”

“We have to check,” Hinda said, feeling the pulse in her fingertips thudding rhythmically.

“What will be with you, Martin?” Yosef asked. “You lost your passport, right?”

“With him, it’s a different story. First of all, he has Canadian citizenship, not American, and besides for that, it's a problem of a loss, not that the passport expired and all he needs to do is renew it,” Dov explained.

“Oh, well,” Yosef said regretfully. “We could have gone together to make new passports.”

Martin grinned. “I can come with you anyway. I don’t have all that much to do these days, you know.”

“But I can’t go to the embassy at all.” Yosef’s face suddenly closed. “I have to go back to the hospital. I promised my doctor.”

“Which hospital would you go back to?” Dov asked. “Maayanei Hayeshuah or Tirat Carmel?”

“I didn’t decide yet.”

“And you can go to your uncle?” Martin asked suddenly.

“Sure. Why not?”

“Maybe I could come with you,” Martin suggested. “I was planning to go to America anyway, at least at first.”

“But you're from Canada!” Yosef’s eyes narrowed. “You don’t have American citizenship!”

“Right, but Canadian citizens can get into America without a visa.”

“And you would come with me?”

“If you want.”

“To my uncle?”

Yosef studied him. “But you don’t have schizophrenia.”

Martin smiled. “And your uncle does?”

“Maybe.” Yosef leaned against the wall. “There’s schizophrenia that erupts at an older age. I read a lot when I was in the ward. And my uncle himself says that he has no idea what is happening to him. But I do have an idea of what is happening to me!” he declared. “What is happening to me now is that I feel I really want to, I must, travel there and get him out of that strange place.

Eating a healthy and balanced breakfast and lunch, as well as 2 healthy snacks in between is the way to go. Making sure that you are full, will significantly lower your sugar craving. Together with eating enough calories, ensure that you include proteins, vegetables, and healthy fats in your daily diet.

In case you do feel hungry when physical tiredness eventually starts to take a toll on you, prepare a low glycemic index snack in readiness for the imminent 3 pm sugar slump. It could be a handful of nuts, an almond butter sandwich, or low-fat cottage cheese. These snacks are naturally sweet so they will satisfy your desires for sugary treats and keep your blood sugar levels steady.

2. Stay away from sweetened beverages.

Did you know that a 20 oz bottle of 100% fruit juice contains more than 10 tablespoons of natural sugar? Even worse, a 20 oz bottle of soda contains not less than 18 teaspoons of added sugar. Just one drink can put you

over the daily recommended sugar allowance of 25g (7tsp) for a woman and 35g (9tsp) for a man. The more you drink these sweetened beverages, the bigger your sugar cravings grow, and drinking too much sugar is one of the main causes of sugar addiction. So, instead of sipping your sweetened energy drink all day, drink water to control your hydration levels. And speaking of hydration levels, proper hydration can dramatically minimize your afternoon sugar and junk food cravings as it suppresses the ghrelin hormone.

3. Avoid boredom

Are you truly craving for sugary foods or are you simply bored? Maybe you've been working on the same spreadsheet for hours? If you think this might be a reason for your unhealthy snacking, try to change up your routine, take a brisk walk, take a five-minute break from the computer and grab some water, or nibble on one of your healthy snacks - just make sure you don't mindlessly reach for some chocolate!

4. Make sure you get enough sleep

Getting enough sleep (about 8 hours a day) helps you to

maintain high levels of the satiety hormone, among other critical benefits. Make sure you don't spend too much time on your phone late at night as the screen interferes with your sleep hormones, and maybe cut out that afternoon coffee. A proper night’s sleep is one of the greatest weapons we have in dealing with anything that will arise the next day.

5. Manage your environment

Keep chocolate, sweets, cookies and cakes out of sight. Sugar cravings can often be triggered just by seeing our favorite treat food! Even better, don’t keep your treat, crave or binge foods in the house at all. If you really want them, go and buy them. If we make something harder for ourselves, we are much less likely to do it.

6. Allow yourself to eat your “treat” foods when you really want them

The minute we tell ourselves we can’t have something, our brain panics and becomes obsessed with having the very thing we are trying to deny it. Try talking to yourself differently. Tell yourself you can still have the chocolate bar when you want it, but first, you are going to eat a healthy snack, or take a walk, or drink some water.

Last week we discussed receiving your loan approval/commitment, what an interest rate is, and how rates are determined. This week we’ll explore the impact of interest rates and locking your rate.

What is the impact of interest rates on borrowers?

In short, your monthly payment. The interest rate directly affects the borrower's monthly mortgage payments. Higher interest rates result in higher monthly payments, while lower rates translate to more affordable payments For example, take a loan amount of $500,000 and an interest rate of 6% on a 30-year fixed mortgage, your monthly payment amounts to $2,998 However, if you have a rate of 6 5%, your monthly payment would be $3,160

The monthly payment is not just interest you’re paying each month; every month you pay back part of your principal balance, and you only pay interest on the amount you currently owe to the lender, meaning, you pay interest only on the outstanding balance Let's say you have a loan amount of $500,000 and an interest rate of 6% This is the amount of interest per year, but since you are paying monthly, you divide the 06 into 12 so your monthly interest is 0 06 ÷ 12 = 0 005 This is your monthly interest rate and your total payment would be $2,500

However, this doesn't include the amount you pay monthly toward your principal loan. Each month your total payment is divided in two, part is towards principal and part towards interest.

But how much will you pay each month?

Keep in mind that you pay interest only on the outstanding balance. For example, when your outstanding loan amount decreases from $500,000 to $470,000 with a 6% interest rate, your monthly interest goes from $2,500 to $2,350.

By using a certain formula, the lender will calculate the difference throughout the life of the loan and ensure your loan lasts for 30 years.

In the early years of a mortgage, a larger portion of your monthly payment goes towards interest, while a smaller portion goes towards reducing the principal balance

As you make monthly payments and gradually reduce the principal balance, the interest portion of your payment decreases, and the amount going towards the principal increases Therefore, the

To obtain the most favorable interest rate, borrowers should carefully consider when to lock in their rate. It's essential to monitor market trends and consult with a loan officer or mortgage broker for guidance. Once the borrower decides to proceed with the loan, they can request the loan officer to lock the rate with the lender.

The rate lock period is the duration for which the interest rate is guaranteed

Typical rate lock periods range from 30 to 60 days, but some lenders may offer more extended options During this period, the borrower must complete all necessary loan processing and secure final loan approval to ensure the rate lock remains valid If a borrower fails to close the loan before the rate lock period expires, they may face the risk of losing the locked-in rate

What happens if the rates drop after you locked your rate? Some lenders offer a float-down option, allowing borrowers to take advantage of a lower interest rate if rates decrease during the rate lock period. However, this option might come with additional costs or restrictions.

Question: Is there a pre-payment penalty if I refinance my loan for a better rate or to cash out on my property?

Answer: Usually on conventional loans there is no pre-payment penalty, It is common on no-doc / DSCR loans.

Maimonides Health holds luncheon reception, with the inimitable Douglas Jablon as emcee, to honor its amazing volunteers

This week, Maimonides Health held a luncheon reception, with the inimitable Douglas Jablon as emcee, to honor its amazing volunteers, over 1,200 in all. One of those volunteers is 91 year-old Margot Lowenstein, a refugee from Nazi Germany, who has been volunteering at Maimonides for 28 years. She has contributed close to 16,000 hours of service to the medical center. She has worked in almost every department and on every floor. Margot was the first volunteer to come back after the COVID pandemic to give her helping hand in the Division of Vascular Surgery, where she makes reminder phone calls to patients so that they do not miss their appointments. She is one of the many people that makes this hospital as great as it is.

Maimonides also recognized the HASC Center, which does incredible work for individuals with developmental disabilities. The HASC volunteers are trained to put together Welcome Boxes that are brought to the medical and surgical units’ and given to the patients upon their admission to the hospital. Approximately 13,000 boxes are packed every year, and the HASC volunteers have been working with Maimonides for over 25 years.

Maimonides’ volunteers are provided with an opportunity to explore different careers in healthcare, research and hospital administration. They gain important work and learning experience and develop a sense of selflessness and empathy through volunteer service while helping their communities. They assist in all aspects of the Medical Center operations, from business and medical offices to patient care areas and support services. Maimonides is grateful to all the volunteers for their selfless commitment and dedication to patient care.

Iwas born and raised in Argentina, a country in South America.

Let’s turn back the clock approximately twenty-five years, to the days when I was a bochur learning close to home. I once had the opportunity to meet with a renowned philosopher and professor. He’s not just a two-bit professor teaching in some obscure campus. He bears the distinction of serving as the Chairman of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Buenos Aires.

There I was, a frum young man speaking with this world-renowned professor who had mounds of knowledge and information at his fingertips. In the course of our conversation, I mentioned something about Techiyas Hameisim.

“Just one moment,” the philosopher interrupted me, a look of shock and disbelief stamped on his face. “Did you just refer to that outdated concept of resurrection, wherein the dead will eventually be brought back to life?”

“Yes,” I admitted, a bit taken aback by his strong words. “But resurrection of the dead – or Techiyas Hameisim as we refer to it – is by far not an outdated concept!”

“You mean to tell me that you actually believe in it?!” the professor exclaimed. “I thought that Jews don’t believe in that concept.”

His comment caught me by surprise. The professor was welleducated, with wide-ranging interests in many fields. I couldn’t figure out where he had been so blatantly misinformed.

“You’re making this up,” the professor accused me. “After all, I remember precisely where I read about this. The Sadducees (Tzadokim) definitely did not believe in resurrection!”

Aha. The picture was clearing up.

“Sir, with all due respect, you must realize that the Jews are not Tzadokim,” I told him. “Look at me. I’m a religious Jew. I definitely have no connection with that age-old faction!”

The professor’s jaw dropped. “How can that be?” he wondered. “I studied Jewish history in depth. I read about the ongoing battles between the Tzadokim and the fanatic Perushim before the Destruction of the Second Temple. Those Tzadokim were powerful! They looked down at the Perushim, humiliated them, and persecuted them. I was certain that nothing remained of them!”

I was more than glad to educate the professor about the truth of our glorious history. I informed him that while those powerful Tzadokim had made a great ruckus in their time, belittling the Perushim at every turn, nothing remains of them. They have disappeared in the annals of history, while the frum Yidden have persevered.

It’s an interesting thought. Before the Churban, when the Tzadokim rose to power, the challenge was tremendous. It seemed that it was just a matter of time before they would reign supreme, but today they are but a sad memory in our nation’s past.

We’re fighting the spread of technology, though naysayers insist that it’s a losing battle. It might be difficult, but we know that truth and purity prevails.

As soon as he stopped rocking her, she started crying again. The Shammash decided that he will teach her a lesson. He gave her a slap, and this shocked her into silence.

When R’ Ashur came home he was surprised to find his daughter quiet.

“How come she is not crying?” he asked his Shammash.

“I hit her,” the Shammash admitted.
