Miriam Pluchok, LMSW: I have an LMSW from Fordham University. I work with individuals and groups, utilizing interpersonal psychodynamic psychotherapy. I am also trained in Somatic Experiencing and DBT skills.

Rachel Brezel, LMHC, MSeD: I have an LMHC as well as a Masters in Education from Fordham University. Due to the duality of having a degree in both the field of education as well as mental health, I can better help children who are struggling both in and out of school.

What drew you to this specific modality?

Miriam Pluchok, LMSW: Many people struggle with anxiety, depression, trauma and other challenges that affect their relationships. By focusing on the “here and now” (present dynamics) and not just the “there and then” (past experiences/happenings), I can support clients in group therapy to learn more about their relationship patterns and gain awareness of their interactions. Drawing on Dr. Irvin Yalom’s group therapy model, I use the group as an opportunity to experiment with healthier relationship dynamics, which can then be applied to real life relationships outside the group.

What results can participants expect?

Rachel Brezel, LMHC , MSeD: The results depend on how much work the parent is willing to put in, and try new tactics. Those who join will learn to be more comfortable parenting their children. They will also gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to parent their children in the most loving yet firm way that will yield positive results.

Recap: Faigy Klein is fired from her teaching job for the last two months of the school year. She decides to keep it a secret, but Tehilla figures it out on her own. The new school year begins. After the first day of school, Mrs. Sternstein celebrates by taking Ahuva and Pori out to eat for dinner.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN:

“Pori?” Pori turned around, annoyed at being called by her first name in school. She smiled when she saw her sister. “Hey! What’s doing?”

“N..n..ot good.” Ahuva’s lower lip trembled. Pori carefully directed her to her private room. Closing the door firmly behind them, she motioned to the chair and watched her sister sit down and start to cry.

“You’re scaring me, tell me fast. What’s going on?” Pori leaned over and squeezed Ahuva’s hand. “It can’t be that bad, could it?”

“You’re right. It can’t be that bad. It could only be worse.” Ahuva sniffled and reached for a tissue.

“Is this about Tehilla?” Pori fingered the colorful friendship bracelet kit on her desk.

“I don’t know. It’s everyone. It’s no one. I just hate it here!” Ahuva picked up a bracelet and twirled it around her finger. “It’s not ninth grade, where you can form a friendship over bracelets, you know.” She gave a wry laugh as she expertly wove some loose colorful threads into a bracelet. “Here, Pori, want to be my friend?” Ahuva tied the bracelet and handed it to her sister with a sarcastic smile. “It’s not like I have anyone else around here.” The shrill sound of the bell interrupted their conversation. Pori stood up. Ahuva remained seated, staring blankly into space. “Go,” she said. “You can’t be late.”

“You can’t either be late. Even if you aren’t happy here.” Ahuva didn’t budge. “Listen,” Pori softened her tone and tried again. “Listen, Ahuva, I really want to help. But right now, and with you looking like this, I can’t help. Go wash your face, calm down, and we’ll speak later at home. There has to be a

way to make this work.”

When that didn’t make Ahuva budge, Pori shrugged and said, “Don’t blame me if you get detention for this. Just make sure to lock the combination lock when you do eventually decide to leave.” She closed the door and looked back for one last glance at her sister. She was shocked by what she saw. Her sister was slowly pulling lumps of hair out of her head. On top of the stack of friendship bracelet threads, there was now a pile of shiny auburn hair.

Fifteen minutes later, Pori knew that teaching her class would be an effort in futility. Her mind was miles away. More accurately, a few doors down the classroom, with her sister’s newfound problem.

“Girls, partner up with the girl on your right.” Partner work was the only solution. “I want you to write something that is one page long that expounds on the topic that we began discussing yesterday. Come up with one good question and develop an answer with your partner.” The girls looked confused, but did as they were told.

Watching them work together happily, Pori decided that she was allowed to sit down. She hated the look of a teacher sitting in a chair, it made her feel lazy and unprofessional. But she was human. And she had witnessed a most horrific sight that she couldn’t make sense of in her mind. Watching the normal chatter and excitement of her ninth graders made her sigh. Why couldn’t Ahuva have that, too?

When it was time to leave, she quickly checked her room- it was empty. With a small sigh, she locked the door and began her walk home. A small tear escaped from the corner of her eye. Passing a small gift shop, her eyes fell upon a colorful helium balloon. “Happy Birthday!” the balloon screamed in colorful, sparkly letters. She walked on, but quickly checked the calendar on her phone to confirm what she thought. September 15th. Tomorrow. Tomorrow would mark twenty-six years since the day that she was born. Tomorrow, her mother would offer to take the family out to eat to celebrate.

But what if, at age twenty six, she just wanted to gloss over her birthday, and pretend it was a regular day? The passing of the years only marked her prolonged agony in the never ending saga of shidduchim. Was she really ready to turn twenty-six?

Walking up the familiar, old steps to her house, she was hit with a sinking feeling, the kind of feeling that, once set, is there to stay. This was her life. The story of her life was a complicated one, but her situation was not about to change. Entering the doors of her childhood home, she knew with an illogical clarity that this would still be her home for a very long time. ***

Chava closed the flame and sighed. Ten minutes to four and supper was nowhere near ready. Motti was thankfully playing with a giant floor puzzle in the playroom, and Chayala was at a neighbor. That left Tehilla, expected to arrive home in forty minutes.

“I did it!” Motti cried. “Ma, come see!” Chava made her way to the playroom and smiled widely. “Wow, you are one smart little boy!” she said, eyeing the huge puzzle with pride. “You are the best! How about trying the other puzzle while I finish making supper?” Motti reached for the box agreeably.

Some forty minutes later, her menu was shaping up. She cooked bow-tie shaped noodles and prepared a broccoli sauce for it. After dividing the noodles between two pans, she poured sauce over one and left the other empty for the kids.

As she slid a tray of potato knishes into the oven, she heard the door open. Tehilla. Her mystery daughter. A closed book. With the start of eleventh grade, despite Chava’s repeated attempts to be involved in her daughter’s life, it was clear that Tehilla wanted to keep the going-ons in school to herself.

“Hi! Thanks for the broccoli! Special for me, right?”

“Of course! How’s school? Anything major happened today?” Chava hoped she didn’t sound as desperate as she felt. It was like

fishing in a lake with no fish. No matter how tempting the bait, there was no fish to come and bite.

“Good, no, nothing happened.” Tehilla placed her bag on the floor and quickly explained, “I have a test, so I am running out to Rachelli soon.”

Chava nodded and placed a steaming bowl of onion soup in front of her. “Are you sure that it has to be Rachelli all the time?” she asked carefully. “I mean, there are so many nice girls in your class!”

Tehilla took a spoon and blew the soup. “Ma, you know the answer.”

Chava sighed. “But I don’t like it. I know that your class has a variety of girls from all sorts of backgrounds and all sorts of levels of Yiddishkeit, but why can’t you branch out? I am sure that a girl like you can easily attract a couple of friends. But you aren’t even trying!”

Tehilla remained quiet. When she finished her bowl of soup, she quickly ate the pasta and declined her mother’s offer of a potato knish. “I’m not hungry anymore,” she said politely, swinging her briefcase onto her shoulders. “I’ll be leaving now. See you!”

Chava sadly watched her daughter, the polite stranger, leave her kitchen. What had become of her innocent girl, who was so filled with hopes and dreams? Now that Tehilla was in eleventh grade, it was clear that her new persona was here to stay. But at what price?

As a mother who wanted only the best for her daughter, Chava couldn’t help but worry about how this would affect her shidduchim opportunities. Who would want a girl who attended a high school that was catered to girls at risk?

Worrying was useless, that much she did know. But a mother couldn’t help but worry. Especially a mother watching her daughter writhing in silent pain. ***

“Welcome to my humble abode,” Rachelli joked as she opened the door to her room. “Time to get cracking.”

I slid into her hot pink bean bag and groaned. “At least a big test is an excuse to spend more time with you,” I said languidly, sinking deeper into the bean bag.

“You don’t need an excuse.”

Was I imagining things, or was her voice hard? Weird. “Chells, of course, I was joking!”

Rachelli smiled and sat down on the floor near me. “I know.” She paused, and I had a strange feeling that she wanted to tell me something important. She flipped open her notebook and asked me, “Should I start?”

Without thinking, I slid the notebook out of her fingers, and stared at her in the eye. “Something is bugging you, and I want to know what. Spill.”

A round tear escaped the corner of her eye, but she still refused to speak. I gently placed the notebook on the floor and said quietly, “You know I also don’t have a perfect life. It’s okay to have problems. But I always share them with you. Why aren’t you comfortable sharing them with me?”

A horrible thought entered my mind as I watched the conflicting emotions roil on my best friend’s face. The thought crystallized as I watched Rachelli struggle to formulate her thoughts into words. It had to be. Somehow, this had to do with me.

“You might never forgive me for this,” Rachelli finally choked out. She couldn’t meet my eyes.

“For what? I am getting scared, what on earth?” I tried to keep my tone light, but my heart was pounding. This was it. Somehow, yet another relationship that I valued so much in my life would dissolve. Somehow, I already sensed a deep sting of betrayal in the air.

“It’s about you. But it’s also about me,” Rachelli whispered. She leaned against the white lace on the bottom of her bed. “Worst of all, Tehilla, and you will never believe me, but worst of all, I promise that I didn’t mean for this happen. But worst of all, this is also about Ahuva Sternstein.”

CHEESY VEGETABLE WRAPS

6 wraps

6 Tbsp cream cheese

Shredded cheese

Mushroom Filling:

2 cartons fresh mushrooms, peeled and sliced

¾ tsp salt

1 tsp onion soup mix

Oil, for sauteeing

Broccoli Filling: 8 oz frozen broccoli, defrosted

Salt and pepper, to taste

1. Prepare your choice of filling: Mushroom: Saute mushrooms in a skillet over medium heat until browned. Add spices. Broccoli: Place defrosted broccoli in a small bowl. Pour boiling water over it, let sit for 2-3 minutes. Drain. Add salt and pepper to taste.

2. Preheat oven to 400°.

3. Spread a tablespoon of cream cheese on the lower third of each wrap. Top with vegetable filling. Sprinkle with a generous amount of shredded cheese and roll up blintzstyle.

4. Place wraps in a 9x13 pan. Bake uncovered 10-15 minutes, until golden and crispy.

5. Use a sharp knife to cut the wraps.

Note: Wraps can be frozen. Reheat uncovered at 300° for 10-15 minutes until cheese is melted.

OVENBAKED HASH BROWNS

4 lg potatoes, peeled

¼ cup oil

1 tsp salt

1 tsp onion soup mix

2 tsp paprika

½ tsp garlic powder

1. Preheat oven to 400° .

2. Dice the potatoes into ½” cubes. (Larger cubes do not work well for this recipe.) Place into a 9x13 pan along with the remaining ingredients and mix well. Spread potatoes in an even layer.

3. Bake 45 minutes. Remove from oven and toss with a fork, allowing some of the potatoes to break up a bit.

4. Return to the oven for another 15-25 minutes.

Note: If you’d like to double the recipe, it should be divided between 2 pans so it bakes through properly.

But when I look in the mirror, I still feel like I'm fat, and that I need to eat even less than I’m eating. Mike crumpled the paper in frustration. Dr. Skulholt looked at him from the side. “Don’t be so angry, Mike. It’s not healthy. Not for the body or the soul,” he said softly. “Do you still believe she’s doing this on her own?”

“Then at least I need to see her.” The idea suddenly popped into Mike’s head. “You are so good to me; you're helping me so much, and I’m really doing well. What’s this obstinacy? Did I ask to kidnap her? If I bring her here for two days, and leave a message for my parents, they won’t worry.”

“They really won’t worry…” The doctor’s voice was laced with scorn. “Less than twenty-four hours after you disappeared, they’d already gotten all your friends up on their hind legs. How much time do you think it'll take them to do that after their six-year-old child disappears—especially if you're the one who leaves them the reassuring message about her?! I think we’ve explained our view well enough, and that it’s very clear.”

He eyed Mike’s restless hands, and the jerky motions with which he folded the fax at least twenty times. “Don’t be so edgy, Mike. Let me think about this. Maybe we’ll try to do something as a gesture. I see that you are very distraught, and I want to help you out if I can.”

Mike was quiet.

“First of all, send her a nice fax in return and write how you are certainly thinking about her, and that you’ll try to find a solution. Do you have a phone number where you can reach her when nobody in the family is around?”

“Not now. Maybe when she’s in school I can try to call there and ask them to let her know she has a phone call.”

“Great. So we’ll think about what can be done about this, and the minute we have a solution—we’ll talk about it. But you realize that she can’t come here, right?”

The youth nodded. He leaned over the paper that Skulholt gave him, and wrote: Dear Becky, don’t think I don’t care about you. There are no children in the place where I am now, and therefore I’m not sure I’ll be able to help you. But I think about you all the time, and I’m very worried. Try to eat well, and don’t look in the mirror so much. It’s not healthy and doesn’t do anything for you. Love, Mike.

Half an hour later, Jerry met his brother, the CEO, in his office. “We’ve got to put an end to this story,” he said, as he filled his cup with boiling water from the minibar. “Where are the teabags, Edmond? You hear? An end to this story, that’s what we need. Because our Mikey is not going to calm down.”

“Doesn’t he realize that we don’t want to get into legal trouble? Does the kid not have a brain?”

“He probably does, but only up until the place where he thinks about his spoiled little sister. “And what will that give you?”

"It will restore his admiration for us. There is something a bit dumb about him, and if he thinks that we don't care about him, we won’t be able to influence him further. We’ll give him some pieces of advice to share

with her, and maybe we’ll give her a little sachet of herbs, so he’ll see that we’re really concerned about him and care about him.” ***

Dov was very surprised when Schwartzman, the lawyer, called to say that he’d been able to defer Martin’s deportation for two full months. “Because of the chagim that are coming,” he explained. The postponement was very welcome, and resolved the issue of the lost passport, but for Martin, it meant long and boring days with nothing to do. “I don’t know. I thought maybe he wants to be a psychiatrist, but he doesn’t. I asked him.”

“Michoel also misses you,” she said, as she peeled apples for compote. “I’m worried about what will be with him for Rosh Hashanah.”

Chani would be coming for Rosh Hashanah. It hadn’t been simple to decide who would come. At first, Penina really wanted to come, and that caused a dilemma, because Dov wanted to invite Chevy or Yael, and had already spoken to them both. But then one evening, without any advance notice, he said suddenly, “The truth is that my girls were here for long enough, even if not Chevy and Yael. Now it's your turn to invite one of yours.”

Hinda had worried that Penina would be offended, but that very evening Penina had called and informed them, sounding disappointed, that Zevi preferred to daven in his yeshivah in Bnei Brak. So they would sleep at home and eat with his parents.

Hinda wondered if something had happened all of a sudden, causing them not to want to come. Maybe one of the sisters had persuaded them all to stay away?

But Dov didn’t look particularly disappointed; he walked around the house humming Machnisei Rachamim to himself, and Hinda knew that she would not allow herself to get into this whirlpool of who-wants-me and who-doesn’t and who-is-destroying-it-all-for-us. Why suspect anyone? And besides, since Simi had been there, she made sure, each Friday when she called her father to say good Shabbos, to ask to speak to her and to wish her a good Shabbos as well.

“Please send Uncle Michoel regards,” Yosef replied now. “Is he still in America?”

She sighed. “Yes.” On his last call, Michoel had been more reserved, and barely said a word about himself. Maybe they needed to ask someone what to do, get some advice. How could they know what was really happening with him? She'd asked him to let her speak with someone on the staff, but he’d replied laconically, "Not now. Right now I’m alone here." But he hadn't sounded like he was alone.

“Is there a phone number where I can call to wish him a gut yahr?”

“Good idea. I’ll ask him next time he calls. What goes on over there on Rosh Hashanah, Yosef?”

“I have to find out,” he replied indifferently, almost apathetically. She didn’t know if that was genuine or not. “This morning, I moved into the assisted living facility; they agreed for me to stay on there before I go back to community life.”

She had to smile when she heard his choice of words, which were clearly not his own. “And you’re not ready yet for that—'community life'?” she asked calmly.

“I don’t think so. And besides, who will I go to shul with? Dov?”

“I don’t know which minyan Dov will go to; we haven’t talked about it yet. You can go to our regular shul. It has nothing to do with him.”

“Last year, I went to shul for all the tefillos.”

“That’s right.”

“I don’t know if I’m up to it this year.”

“You would go only as much as you could, Yosef.”

“And let’s say I’m not up to it, and just not in the mood, at all?”

“Then you'll daven at home.”

“And if I’m not up to that, or in the mood for that?”

Something in his tone was a bit provocative, and she suddenly realized that she didn’t need to use the skills she’d developed as the mother of a child with schizophrenia; instead, she needed those skills that she’d acquired about fifteen years ago, when she’d gone to a short parenting course. Mali had been the catalyst for that, if she recalled correctly.

“It’s too early to talk about this, Yosef,” she said, calm as ever. “Meanwhile, you can find out if there’s a minyan there. If there definitely isn’t one, then maybe it’s a shame for you to stay there. Here in the neighborhood, at least you have the option to go to shul.”

HEBREW READING HELP

Q: My second grader is struggling with reading Hebrew. He seems to be just below grade level with English reading, but he is completely uninterested in kriyah. Do you have any suggestions for motivation?

A: First, let me congratulate you on addressing this issue when your son is in second grade. Many parents believe that the problem should correct itself, but in reality, the longer we wait with reading (any language), the harder it becomes for children to catch up.

Next, I wanted to outline the reasons why reading is so important. Often, we mistakenly think that reading is a skill relegated to the academic realm. We think, “So what if a child doesn’t read at grade level? Maybe he won’t do well in school, but he can still be a successful adult.” In fact, research has shown that literacy is directly connected to both social and financial success.

In 2009, the National Institute for Literacy released the following statement, “The ability to read and write is fundamental to full participation in American society. Our nation of farmers and mechanics has been transformed into one in which economic, civic, and social

success depend on educational attainment for all, particularly in literacy.”

Not only do children who read proficiently have an easier time in all academic areas, they also are more capable in social situations. They are more confident and more independent and therefore function more smoothly with their peers. Conversely, illiteracy has a shocking connection to crime. Statistics show that 60% of all prison inmates are functionally illiterate. The Department of Justice states, “The link between academic failure and delinquency, violence, and crime is welded to reading failure.” Of course, I am not saying that because any child struggles with reading that he will be a criminal –rather – I am indicating that when academic problems go undetected and untreated, they can extend well beyond the classroom.

Okay, so we talked about the very important reasons to learn to read English (which you can share with your son as well, if you think it will help), but what are some separate motivating factors for kriyah? As a Jewish male, kriyah is an essential part of participation in communal life. Men are called up for aliyos in shul and your son will undoubtedly

lein from the Torah for his bar mitzvah. Aside from these public opportunities that create pressure to perform, being able to daven in shul is contigent upon kriyah. In addition, learning gemara without any knowledge of kriyah is almost impossible.

On top of all of the motivating factors I listed above, setting up a chavrusah with an older boy who he admires could help motivate him to excel. Intertwining social activity with academic pursuits is a great way to stimulate educational success. However, if your son still needs to master the basic skills of kriyah consider working with a reading specialist. Because Hebrew is a completely phonetic language, learning kriyah through a phonics approach can be quick and simple. Within a few weeks, your son can gain the confidence to read and write Hebrew. Remember, the earlier you start with him, the less time you will need to catch up (and the less mounting frustration he will have accumulated).

While motivating a child to learn is a bit like asking the grass to grow, with a bit of sunshine and water, even the most stubborn seed can blossom.

In the recent weeks, we discussed submitting your loan to the lender, appraisal and title insurance Now, let's continue with the mortgage process

Upon your loan being submitted to a lender, the lender will ensure they have all the necessary documents to review the file, as well as a completed and signed loan application They will also be required to sign authorization forms These forms allow the lender to request and verify information from various sources, such as tax returns, employment history, and credit reports

The lender will provide you with a Loan Estimate (LE) which requires your signature before your loan goes into underwriting.

What is a Loan Estimate?

A Loan Estimate is a document that the bank supplies you with when you're attempting to receive a loan to buy a house. It informs you of important data about the loan so you can understand it better. It includes details such as the loan amount, interest rate, etc. It also breaks down the closing costs, including origination fees (for processing the loan), appraisal fees (to determine the house's value), and credit report fees (to check your financial history). It gives you an understanding of the total closing costs and how much money is required for you to bring to the closing.

At this point, once everything is signed off, your loan can go into underwriting.

Here is a closer look at underwriting and how it works

Conventional loan underwriting is a thorough examination conducted by the bank to assess your financial qualifications for a home loan It helps the lender determine if you are a suitable candidate for borrowing money and whether you have the means to repay the loan

During underwriting, the lender closely scrutinizes your financial documents This includes reviewing income statements, bank statements, and tax returns to verify your income stability The bank wants to ensure that you have a steady source of income that can support monthly mortgage payments.

Another aspect considered is your credit history. Lenders check your credit report to assess your creditworthiness. They look at factors such as your payment history, outstanding debts, and credit scores. A positive credit history demonstrates responsible financial behavior and increases your chances of loan approval.

To move forward towards final loan approval, it is crucial to diligently address the conditions outlined by the lender This may involve gathering the requested documentation, clarifying any discrepancies, or meeting specific requirements within the given timeframe It is essential to maintain clear communication with your loan officer throughout this process

There’s something special about a story that ends with a miracle, a ‘happily ever after’ sort of ending. There are many, many more stories that don’t end that way but these special winks from Hashem allow us to forge ahead with courage and determination.

The story shared by Mrs. G. is actually of the ‘happily ever after’ variety, and we hope it will serve as a source of chizuk in the ongoing battle of technology.

Mrs. G. relates:

Our family was celebrating a simchah overseas. We were looking forward to the wedding that would provide us with an opportunity to spend lots of time together, far away from the constant bustle of daily life.

We’re a large group of married siblings and we all bought tickets together on the same flight. Protocol at that airline dictated that while we could reserve tickets in advance, the actual seats couldn’t be assigned until shortly before the flight.

We were already traveling to the airport on a rented shuttle when the airline finally started assigning seats. Passengers were able to request which seats they wanted, and the airline accommodated to the best of their ability.

My siblings all whipped out their Smartphones and quickly submitted their requests. They wanted to ensure that they would get good seats together.

I am the only one of my siblings who doesn’t own a Smart-

phone. I have a simple flip-phone that doesn’t do much in the realm of seat-reservations! With all the flickering screens around me and the tension of ‘getting the best seat’, my husband and I remained oddly silent.

We couldn’t reserve seats. We couldn’t do anything until the shuttle arrived at the airport and we were ready to check in. We figured that we would be left with the absolute worst seats on board, and presumably on different ends of the plane. It wouldn’t be pleasant or enjoyable, but it would be just a few hours and then we could put it behind us.

Our ideals were worth more than a good seat.

My siblings checked in, waving their phones with their seat reservations as they marched past security. And then, it was our turn.

“What are you seat numbers?” the attendant asked.

“We didn’t reserve yet,” we replied.

“No problem,” was the polite response. “We’ll book you two seats right now.”

The attendant looked through the available options and offered us prime seating. Apparently, three front seats with added legroom were set aside for customers who were willing to pay a little more for preferred seating. Nobody had snagged those seats, so at the last minute, they were still available for us, at regular price!

It was a comfortable, pleasant flight in every sense of the word. We had three seats for just two people, with added legroom, no less. But the best part of that flight was the special feeling we got that Hashem was looking out for us. We got preferred seating – not despite our lack of devices, but because of it!

I fixed the story there were a few mistakes. here is the corrected version

R’ Yehoshua Falik, the Pnei Yehoshua, once came into a town to find no one outside. It was in the morning, when everyone should have been going to Shachris, and he started wondering. He then encountered a large lion roaming the streets.

The Vilna Goan was very sick and very weak. His Talmidim were standing around his bed when he started crying terribly.

“What happened?” the Talmidim exclaimed.

He then understood why no one was leaving their homes. The lion came towards him, and when R’ Yehoshua quickly put the Tallis over his head, the lion got so scared from the Kedusha, that he ran off and all the people in the town were safe to come out!

He held onto his Tzitzes and said, “For a few dollars, we could buy ourselves thousands of Mitzvos to take along. Every second that I wear my Tzitzus, I have a Mitzvah. You, Talmidim,” he said with a smile, “are so lucky that you can still live and get all those Mitzvos in this world!”
