Recap: Tehilla and Ahuva start high school in their respective schools: Tehilla, in a school for girls at-risk, and Ahuva, in the elite high school. Ahuva comes to the realization that she must find out who is spreading rumors about Tehilla, and decides to finally get to the bottom of it.

CHAPTER SEVEN:

“Tehilla! Wait up!” An all-too familiar voice called. I slowly turned my back, not willing myself to believe that this was really happening. Would Ahuva dare to try? I thought she was smarter than that.

Ahuva didn’t give me a choice. She fell into perfect step with my stride and launched into her rehearsed speech right away.

“Tehilla, since I moved to America, I always loved and admired you. We hit it off right away, and then, out of the blue, you were gone! You offered no explanation, no reason, and just disappeared right out of my life. I have been doing a lot of thinking, Tehilla.

I think it’s about time that we sit down and discuss what happened.”

I felt the blood pounding in my ears. This couldn’t be happening, could it? Natural writer that I was, my words shot out a bit more dramatic than they needed to be. “Ahuva, I lost faith in you. I lost faith in society. And as for faith in Hashem….well, that is none of your business.”

“Tehilla, I know that you think that I am the one spreading things about you, but you are wrong. I never said a negative word about you. You are my best friend, why would I?” Her eyes were pleading, so innocent, so sincere; my heart softened at the sight.

“Look, we both went to different high schools. We both started a new chapter in our lives. I think that it is time that we just learn to live without each other.” My words were firm and final. There was no turning back now.

“Is there anything that I can do to regain your trust in me?”

I waited just a second before I replied. “Yes. You can finally reveal to me who it is, if it isn’t you, that started these filthy rumors.” Ahuva looked like she was prepared for my accusation.

She nodded and said, “I already started doing research. I will get back to you with the name of the person that is spreading this. And boy will these rumors stop.”

When we parted at the corner, I was almost able to pretend that this was just another one of our daily walks home from school. The truth was that this was the first conversation between us for the past six months. And our friendship had already lasted ten whole years. Deep down, I believed Ahuva. Somehow, my gut feeling told me that Ahuva was innocent. But my gut feeling also knew that innocent as she was, Ahuva had somehow played a terrible part in my demise. It was up to her to figure out how.

Ahuva glanced at the red glowing numbers on her alarm clock. Voices. Why were her parents up so late? Her father was thankfully back home, almost as if his mysterious trip never happened. She strained her ears to hear what they were saying. At the name, “Ahuva”, she sat up with a start. What were they saying about her? Words and fragments floated into her room. “Ahuva…school…unhappy with the new place…should we consider a change…” Ahuva slipped on her soft socks and tip-toed to the closed door of her parents’ room.

“Speaking badly of Tehilla was the only way. They would have gone to high school together. They would have stayed close, and we both know that this friendship had to end. So, telling Mrs. Epstein about Tehilla’s journey downhill was the best way to go about it. We did the right thing.”

Ahuva’s feet went cold. She felt her body go from cold to hot and then back to cold again. Not bothering to cover her tracks, she picked up her feet and fled. Ahuva flung her shivering body onto her bed. Her entire being shook with sobs.

That’s where Pori found her the next morning, half ways hanging off her bed, red eyes and tearstreaked face telling the story of a sleepless night.

Chava used her good hand to bang open the door to Tehilla’s room. The bed was unmade. Chava sighed. She knew that Tehilla didn’t

expect her to make it, but she couldn’t stand a mess. Chava dragged her immobile foot to Tehilla’s bed and threw the pillow onto the floor. She struggled to spread out the blanket and then the cover and bent down to pick up the pillow. Something fell out of the pillowcase with a thud.

What was that? Chava used her cane to push it away from the clutter on the floor. Her eyes widened when she saw what she was looking at: A book. A book clearly labeled: Property of Brooklyn Public Library.

Chava didn’t bother bending down to pick it up. She didn’t want to see the title. She didn’t want to believe that this was her daughter.

It was time to face a new reality. Tehilla had changed together with the traumatic change in her life. Chava couldn’t really blame her for turning to other things to fill her void. She just wished she had a guide, a manual to tell her exactly what her next move should be.

Chava wouldn’t mind step by step directions explaining how to deal with this new stage of Tehilla’s journey. ***

“Ninth Grade Program Event Coordinators: Chaya Glustein, Tova Antebi, and Tehilla Kaplan,” Pori read off the list. I looked up at the sound of my name. Me? Why was I chosen to head the ninth-grade event? Couldn’t they have found a more interested and motivated candidate for the job? It didn’t seem like I was being given a choice, I was being given a job. When my group gathered to discuss our new job, I remained silent. Chaya kept glancing in my direction, as if waiting for me to contribute. I just shrugged and stared into space. At the end, Tova said, “Tehilla, you like these plans? What do you think?”

“I don’t really care. I am fine with whatever you come up with.”

“Tehilla, do you mind if I ask you something?” Tova looked nervous.

“Sure.”

“Why are you so cynical? You seem to not really want to be here in school. So, what brings you here?”

For a moment, I felt my anger rising. How dare she! But then I realized that this was coming

to me. I couldn’t project a negative attitude for weeks and expect everyone to overlook it.

“To be honest, I don’t belong here.” I swept my hand over the classroom, as if referencing the class in one swoop. “No one here is from my crowd, and this isn’t really the right school for me. For whatever reason, I was forced to come here. You are right, I don’t really want to be here. I just don’t have anywhere else to be.”

Tova didn’t look impressed at my answer. “Why do you think that you are superior? Just because you decided in your brain that this isn’t your crowd, what makes that the truth?”

For once, I didn’t have an answer. Tova was annoyingly right. At this point, I kind of did fit in here. At this point, I was just as vulnerable and lost as the rest of the class. I was here, and it seemed like it was time for me to accept that I was here to stay.

That day, for the first time since I entered the doors of Ateres Batsheva, I decided to make use of Rachelli’s daily offer to walk home together. She had pointed out a while ago that we lived pretty close to each other, but I had ignored her broad hint and the daily reminders that followed it.

Today, I approached Rachelli at the sound of the dismissal bell. “Are you going straight home today?”

“Yup! You better believe I am!” she responded with a friendly smile.

“Do you want to walk together?”

“Sure! Let me just run to the vending machine to get a soda, and I will meet you at the entrance in five minutes, ‘kay?”

It was that easy, I thought in wonder, to accept reality and even make the best of it. Rachelli was the kind of friend that I always dreamed of, except that I never had to dream, because Ahuva was always there for me. Rachelli had that easygoing, accepting nature, with no airs about her. In short, she was the perfect friend for me.

My every antenna screamed, when will you learn to stop trusting people? Why are you even trying to form a new relationship? as I met Rachelli at the entrance and began our walk home. I ignored the buzzing thoughts and asked Rachelli, “What do you say to Miss

Sternstein?”

“She’s adorable, no? I really enjoy her classes. I find them so real and well-delivered. Do you enjoy it, too?”

I hoped she didn’t realize why I picked Miss Sternstein of all teachers as a conversation opener.

“I enjoy her classes a lot. I also really like Mrs. Cohen, our writing teacher. I love to write, so I am not sure if it has much to do with her or just her subject.”

Rachelli laughed. I silently noticed the tinkling trill that her laughter generated.

“Writing? Are you serious, Tehilla? Can you please write my essays for me this year? You are officially hired!”

Now that the ice was broken, our conversation flowed easily and lasted until we parted at the corner. It surprisingly felt good to engage in light conversation with a classmate. Even if that classmate was attending Ateres Batsheva with me. And even if that classmate’s name wasn’t Ahuva Sternstein.

These good feelings were mutually shared, and our walks home together became a part of our daily routine.

Three weeks after our first walk home together, our last-period teacher, Mrs. Orenstein, dismissed us ten minutes before the bell. Rachelli was already walking towards my desk when she saw the teacher leave the room.

“Tehilla?”

“Rachelli! Are you ready?” I heaved my backpack onto my shoulders and began to follow her to the door.

“Yes, I am. Do you mind if I do a quick errand for my mother on the way?”

“No problem, let’s go.” Our relationship had slowly developed from our daily walks home, and silence was a comfortable curtain that draped over parts of our walks. I wasn’t pressured to begin or end any conversation; our relationship already had an ease that we enjoyed.

After two minutes of just the sound of our footsteps on the pavement combined with city noise, Rachelli asked, “Tehilla? Do you mind if I ask you something personal?”

I smiled. “Depends what. Ask away, I will see what I want to answer.”

Rachelli looked at the sidewalk as she walked, almost consciously avoiding my eyes.

“What made you come to Ateres Batsheva? I mean, you were coming from a regular, mainstream elementary school. Why are you here?”

The silence that passed was uncomfortable now.

“It’s a long story,” I said, after a long moment.

“It’s fine. Forget I asked.”

“It’s a fair question. And I do want to answer you. I just don’t know how. It is the kind of thing that is hard to put into words. I mean, I was GO president in eighth grade, just last year!”

Rachelli’s face was incredulous. “Wow! Honestly, most of us here don’t have such an impressive resume!”

“Don’t get impressed. My job was chosen before. Before someone decided to destroy my name, my future, and my dreams. But I have come to the realization that Ateres Batsheva is the right place for me now. Maybe I will go to a mainstream high school for tenth grade. But this is a good start.”

Rachelli looked like she wasn’t sure what to say. I was being vague and clear all at once.

“And I got to meet you,” I added, “So it was worth something, right?”

When we parted at the corner that day, Rachelli’s smile held only one emotion: pure, unadulterated pity.

Dov and Martin arrive at the yahrtzeit seudah/siyum, which is being held at Dov’s old house in Bnei Brak. Dov’s daughters are emotional about the occasion. Zevi, Penina’s husband, introduces himself to Martin, and they decide that Martin should use Zevi’s phone to call his old friend, but only once they’re ready to leave the house.

CHAPTER FIFTY TWO

Dov’s former home was rather close to the cemetery, and when they filed out silently, Chevy looked at her sisters. “You’re coming back to me now, like we made up, right?” she asked. “Till we manage to all get together…” With two of the sisters living in Elad, and two in Bnei Brak—but each at different ends of the city—they didn't often have a chance to get together with each other. “Sure,” Simi replied, with the responsibility of the oldest sister. “Did you think we’d leave you with that mess after the siyum and everything?”

Chevy shook her head. “Not because of that!” She glanced at her father, standing on the side and talking with two of his sons-in-law. That boy with the heavy American accent was standing with them, too. As Chevy watched, Penina’s husband Zevi gave the boy his phone, despite the large device peeking out from the latter’s pants pocket. The boy took the phone and moved a few

steps away.

“I don’t know how much longer my neighbor can watch my kids,” Yael hedged. “I told her it would take some time, because you asked us to come over afterward. But…is this going to take a long time, Chevy?”

“It's…it's the white chest of drawers in the spare bedroom,” Chevy said with a sigh. “I know that in theory I can lock it and throw the key into the sea, but the lock is broken, and has been for years. And I, masochist that I am, feel like I have to open it every few months. I end up reading all the papers inside it: the hospital documents and doctor visit summaries, and blood test and CT scans and MRI results, and Ima’s correspondence with the physiotherapist when she couldn’t talk, and…and it’s destroying me.” She shook her head. “Abba says there’s no real reason to keep it all, but I can’t just throw it out. I want you to go over it all with me…”

“Chevy!” Aunt Nechama, their mother’s sister, wagged her finger at her niece. “You mustn’t do that! As soon as I heard you were going to live in the house, I thought that this wouldn’t be good for you.”

Chevy gave a wry smile. “Actually, other things that I thought would bother me hardly do. Like Ima's clothes. But right away Abba either gave them away or threw them out. And the master bedroom—we just use another room for our bedroom. And the kitchen— baruch Hashem I got over my hesitation to cook in it pretty quickly, and at this point, I hardly remember that

it was once my mother’s kitchen. But the documents… We have to deal with those.”

“Not me,” Penina said, shaking her head decisively. “I can’t. Do me a favor, Chevy. It took me so long to get back to myself…I don’t want to go through it all again. Please, you’ll let me off the hook from this, right? As your youngest sister?”

“Fine, you’re released.” Chevy managed a half smile and looked at the others.

“No problem,” Yael said. “But I’m telling you right now how I plan to deal with it—by asking you for a big black garbage bag, and then grabbing everything that’s there and throwing it out. I won’t even pause to tear each paper into shreds.”

“And what if a cat rips the bag downstairs in the dumpster? Are you okay with Ima’s suffering being exposed to whoever passes by?”

Yael folded her arms. “I’m ready to spill some milk on it, if you’ll donate a cup or so.” A small smile tugged at the corners of her lips. “Everything will get sour in there, and turn moldy in no time. No one will get close to those papers.”

“Bleach is better, once we’re at it,” Simi said, and Yael tittered. “Shall we? We’ll tell our husbands to come and get us in another…half an hour?”

“Forty-five minutes, please,” Chevy said. “There are also the thank-you letters that Abba wrote after it was all over, and we can’t throw those out without looking at them at all.”

“Fifteen minutes is enough, I’m telling you,” Yael said. “Using my method, it will go fast.”

But she was wrong, because her method didn’t work. “Penina’s idea was best, believe me,” Yael said with sigh, after scanning the first MRI result with tears in her eyes. “And to think that… Look at the date. Ima got this four days before Penina’s wedding, and she didn’t say a thing to anyone! Remember that wedding? She was so normal, and happy…”

“She cried tons at the chuppah,” Chevy whispered. “I thought it was because her youngest was leaving the house, and you know, empty nest and all that, a different stage in life… Little did I know that it was really a different stage…”

Simi stared out the window. “Just to think of the deathly fear she must have been feeling…”

Chevy was quiet for a long moment. “Maybe we can give ourselves chizuk by thinking of the fact that every minute of fear that she had then, makes her happy now.”

“Who was the one who said that sometimes, we also think about ourselves and not only about Ima's neshamah?”

Yael needled with a faint smile.

They threw all the discs and files into the garbage. The depressing hospital papers, the doctor visit summaries, and the conclusions of the exceptions committee at the HMO that refused to approve an expensive drug for Ima, because, as they said, the situation was hopeless anyway. The sisters kept the results of one early CT scan that was a bit encouraging, and the drawings of the older grandchildren, and a few cute messages that Ima had written with some hope and good cheer. Everything else they tore up and threw into the garbage. They poured milk and bleach into the bag, and some toilet cleaner for good measure, and remembered that real life is so much greater and bigger than they could possibly define with their narrow view and with their ability to grasp. ***

“Rudy?” Martin noticed a playground, and walked in into it. Zevi walked next to him. At this afternoon hour, it was packed with children, despite the heavy Bnei Brak heat.

“Yes, who is this?”

Zevi sat down on a bench and observed Martin, leaning on a lamppost. Zevi didn’t understand English, so he couldn’t pick up a word of the conversation, but he tried to listen to the tone.

“Martin Posner. How are you?”

“Me? I’m fine, baruch Hashem.” Rudy’s voice was slow; the cadence was different from what Martin remembered.

“I haven’t spoken to you since that night when we drove together.”

“Right.”

“You know, I got into big trouble because of that ride.”

“More than me?” Rudy snickered.

Martin hesitated for a minute. “I don’t know what happened to you, but they were sure that I had done it on purpose. I ran away that night, and since then I’m afraid that they’re going to press charges against me.”

“They didn’t do it in the meantime?”

“No.”

Rudy chuckled. “And you think that for nearly three

months you managed to run away from them, and they are such oafs that they can’t put their hands on the elusive mercury? You don’t interest them, Marin—get the point. Otherwise, they would have long arrested you.”

“You think so?” Martin swallowed. “They came to me at one point and tried to offer me a deal. I refused.” His voice dropped. “And I ran away again and changed my phone.” He squinted. Two men entered the park, and they didn’t look like the religious guys in Bnei Brak. He turned to the bench that Zevi was sitting on and sat down next to him. If they were coming here for him, at least he wouldn’t give them the pleasure of catching him so fast.

They headed straight for the lamppost he had been leaning on a moment ago and stopped about five feet from it. One of them glanced up, at the bulb that was apparently burnt out. He said something, and the second one wrote it down. Then they continued to the next lamppost.

“I’m not going to ask what kind of deal they offered you,” Rudy said. “But again, I believe that if they really wanted to get to you, they would have done it a long time ago.”

“SoSo, in your opinion, I don’t have to worry anymore?”

“In my opinion? No.”

“In any case, if I get messed up with them…” Martin sighed, “would you agree to testify on my behalf?”

“On your behalf? That what?”

“That I wasn’t the one who sped up to hit the Arabs. That I grabbed the wheel to stop the car and not to turn it toward the sidewalk.”

“You’re forgetting one thing, Martin,” Rudy said. “The fact that I was exhausted, and that I fell asleep for a few seconds. That's the truth, and that's what I already told them. So if I fell asleep, how can I know what you did in those seconds?”

“But do you believe me?”

“In theory, yes. But I can't come and tell them that I know what you were doing at that time, you get it? It’s enough that I’m still up to my ears in this story.”

Martin stood up. “I understand what you're saying. Rudy, what are you being accused of?”

“At least not intentional, attempted murder. The

prosecution tried very hard in that direction; it’s a miracle for me that they didn’t succeed. As it is, I will probably go to prison for at least half a year, or I'll have to do community service, or I don’t know what. But I’m saying again,” his voice rose, “that I don’t think you have what to worry about.”

“Thanks, Rudy. Thanks for everything.”

Martin gave the phone back to Zevi, and they walked back out onto the street. From the whole family, only Dov was left there, with another older man and another son-in-law.

“Are you done?” Dov asked, as he shook hands with the white-haired man and then hurried toward his car. “Let’s go. Zevi, shkoyach!”

“Sure.” Zevi grinned and waved to them both.

Martin closed the car door, his eyes fixed on the cemetery gate. “So you believe that all those here will rise up again, right?”

“Absolutely.” He started the car. “Those who will merit it.”

“Who do you think will merit it?”

Dov hesitated and then said, “Those who wanted to be good Jews.”

“Can I ask you a slightly tactless question?”

Dov chuckled. “Try. And I imagine I know what you want to ask.”

“Let’s try you. What do you want to answer me?”

“I can tell you that yes, in fact, a man can have two wives. But that’s not the answer.”

“Of course, because your wife’s late husband will also come back to life.”

Dov smiled. “The real answer is that we have no idea what will be then. We only know that it will be good.”

“What kind of good?”

“Real good. Perfect good. Not something that we can comprehend right now. Our earthly senses are limited, and we just have to remember that the true reality that Hashem created is beyond what we can comprehend now. It's something that we, in This World, cannot grasp.”

“But it is good.”

“Yes. Very, very good.”

STRATEGIES FOR OPTIMUM SUCCESS BRAIN BREAKS

Q: I keep hearing about how children need recess in order to perform better in school. I understand the general idea: you need to get your blood flowing and your body moving in order to get your brain working. However, I was wondering if there was some sort of educational philosophy behind recess?

A: There are two extremely important educational principles behind recess: an opportunity for socialization and physical activity. First, socialization is a key part of the learning process. Children who have friends in the classroom and are comfortable with their peers are more likely to participate, volunteer, and speak up. These interactive elements of the learning are what solidify information in a child’s brain. Therefore, the more comfortable a child is socially, the more comfortable he will be to apply his academic knowledge. Recess, as an opportunity for socialization,

provides a time for children to get to know one another on a more personal level, thereby enhancing the positive feeling in the classroom.

The second element of recess that is often overlooked is the idea that through recess children get their bodies moving. John Ratey, a professor at Harvard Medical School and the author of Spark: The Evolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, explains that “physical activity sparks biological changes that encourage brain cell to bind to one another… exercise provides an unparalleled stimulus, creating an environment in which the brain is ready, willing, and able to learn.” So, another added bonus of recess? The ability for children’s brains to function more proficiently after a little physical activity.

day. One exercise that I have found to be helpful both in the classroom and in my office, is a technique Michelle Gay writes about in her book Brain Breaks for the Classroom. These “brain breaks” are a great way to get your child focused when he is doing homework or if he is preparing his leining for his bar mitzvah. The basic concept of brain breaks is that when your child engages both is body and his mind, he will be better ready to accept the information presented to him. Below are some sample “brain breaks” that your child can do at home or in school:

Brain Wave:

Kneel on the floor. Put your feet down so that your toes are touching. Put your knees down with a little distance between them.

Rest your forearms and hands (palms down) on the floor. Spread your elbows wider than your knees.

Put your forehead on the floor

Take a few deep breaths.

Tuck in your arms, legs, and your whole body to make an “O” shape.

Spread your arms and legs wide open to create an “X” shape.

Curl back into the “O” position. Repeat.

Pesach Pleasures

Dessert on Pesach can be tasty and pretty using only basic ingredients. Dessert components can be mixed and matched according to your taste and style.

MOCHA CRUNCH DELIGHT

1 ½ cups sugar

¾ cup potato starch

½ cup cocoa

4 eggs

1 cup oil

¼ tsp salt

1 Tbsp coffee granules dissolved in:

2 Tbsp hot water

Chopped nuts, for rolling

Chocolate Sauce:

1 cup sugar

½ cup cocoa

1 tsp coffee dissolved in a drop of hot water

¼ tsp salt

6 Tbsp water

4 Tbsp oil

PREPARE THE MOCHA CRUNCH BALLS:

1. Preheat oven to 350°.

2. In a mixing bowl, combine sugar, potato starch and cocoa and mix to combine. Add eggs, oil and salt and mix well.

3. Bake for 25-30 minutes. Do not overbake.

4. While cake is still warm use a spoon or a gloved hand to mash the cake. Add dissolved coffee and continue mashing the cake until it comes together and forms one large ball. (If necessary, add a little more hot water).

5. Form balls and roll them in chopped nuts. Place in a pan, single layer and freeze until ready to serve.

PREPARE THE CHOCOLATE SAUCE:

1. Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan and simmer over low heat for 5 minutes until smooth.

2. Store in an airtight container at room temperature until ready to serve.

LEMON SWIRLED ICE CREAM

LEMON CURD:

1 cup sugar

1 cup fresh lemon juice

4 eggs

¼ tsp salt

1 Tbsp oil

ICE CREAM:

6 egg whites

4 egg yolks

¾ cup sugar

¼ cup oil

PREPARE THE LEMON CURD:

1. Combine all ingredients, except oil in a medium pot and mix very well.

2. Cook over low-medium heat, whisking constantly for 10-15 minutes. Mixture will thicken to the consistency of a blended soup. Remove from heat and whisk in the oil.

3. Transfer curd to a container, and press a piece of plastic wrap to the top to prevent a skin from forming. Refrigerate for up to a week.

PREPARE THE ICE CREAM:

1. Beat the egg whites. As they stiffen, slowly add the sugar.

2. In a separate bowl, beat the yolks with the oil. Gently mix into the beaten egg whites.

3. Transfer ice cream to a container and gently marbleize ¾ of the lemon curd into the ice cream.

TO SERVE:

Spoon additional lemon curd over the ice cream and top with crumbs of your choice (crushed nut cookies work well).

To prepare caramelized lemons: Slice lemons into ¼” rounds. Lay on a baking sheet. Sprinkle lemon slices with a generous amount of sugar. Bake at 325° for 1 hour- 1 ½ hours until lemons appear nicely caramelized. Let cool and store in an airtight container.

Tip: Smear the extra lemon curd on your favorite sponge cake for a lemon cream cake.

AGum is a popular treat that many of us enjoy, but did you know that it might not be as good for us as we think? Here are four reasons why gum may not be the best choice for your health.

Gastric juices: When we chew gum, we release gastric juices in our stomach, which signals our digestive system that food is on the way. · It is rarely too late to start resistance training; you can build muscle mass well after age 60. In 2022, I set a new personal record in the leg press for 600 pounds, far better than the 400-pound deadlift I did the year before

· Sarcopenia — age-related muscle loss — threatens a healthy lifespan. Skeletal muscle not only manages physical activity, but also plays a major role in metabolism, circulation and cognition

· Skeletal muscle acts as endocrine organ secreting myokines and transcription factors into the bloodstream, thereby regulating the function of other organs. It also has immune regulatory properties

· The loss of muscle mass is thought to be a primary driver of insulin resistance in older adults. Declining muscle strength and reduced physical activity also contribute to metabolic dysfunction

· In order to gain muscle mass though one needs a critical to eat enough protein. A minimum is about 1.2 grams per kilogram of body weight (0.54 grams/pound) per day. Athletes and the elderly could probably benefit from going up from that level to about 1.6 grams/kilogram (0.71 grams/pound)

This may be one of the most important articles we’ve ever written with respect to helping you understand how important resistance exercise is to not only slowing down the aging process but improving your overall metabolic health. We know this is important because studies have shown that over 75% of those over 65 do not exercise enough to stay healthy.

But, the key is to understand the type of exercise that will give you the greatest benefit for the time invested. If we had to engage in hard physical labor for our work we wouldn't need to exercise. Formal exercise is only needed because most of us have long ago stopped engaging in manual labor. Modern society has allowed us to obtain food and shelter with relatively little effort. So, we need exercise to compensate for this if we hope to optimize our physical health.

Understanding the Hazards of Sarcopenia

The medical term for age-related muscle loss is sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is derived from two Greek words: sarx (flesh) and penia (poverty). So, as you get older you will invariably start losing muscle mass, and if you don't engage in resistance exercises, you will likely suffer metabolic diseases as well.

An estimated 25% of 60-year-olds have sarcopenia, and nearly two-thirds of those 80 years and older have lost serious amounts of muscle mass, which threatens a healthy lifespan and cuts down on your independence and quality of life. Sarcopenia leads to many functional limitations, including difficulties in walking, climbing stairs and carrying objects. The penalties of this functional decline include falls, disability, institutionalization and even death.

One of the reasons I'm committed to lifelong exercise is

because both of my parents died from frailty, and I'm determined to avoid sarcopenia, which took them prematurely. This was a powerful motivation for me to deeply study frailty so I could avoid their fate.

Sarcopenia Is a Major Driver of Insulin Resistance and Disease

Skeletal muscle is the most abundant tissue in your body, comprising 40% to 55% of your body mass, and is the primary sink of insulin-mediated glucose disposal. Muscle is also the major site for insulin-stimulated glucose uptake, as well as the main energy consumer of fat After meals, about 80% of glucose is deposited in your skeletal muscle.

The loss of muscle mass with advancing age is thought to be a primary driver of insulin resistance in older adults. Again, this is because muscle is the major tissue where insulin causes glucose to be absorbed.

But it doesn't end there. Remember, muscle makes up nearly half of your body's tissues, so once your body runs out of sugar in the form of glycogen, it uses fat, especially if you are metabolically flexible. So, muscle is also the main energy user of fat in your body. The declining muscle strength and progressive mobility impairment with age also tends to reduce daily physical activity, which also contributes to metabolic dysfunction.

The loss of resilience as a result of sarcopenia is underappreciated as a major factor in the ability to recover from life's inevitable challenges. It is clear that elderly with low muscle mass experience delayed recovery, and have higher rates of complications and infections following surgery, greater drug toxicity and higher diseasespecific and all-cause mortality.

Sarcopenia also predicts both the risk for community-acquired pneumonia in the elderly, as well as 90-day mortality in patients suffering from aspiration pneumonia.

Muscle Play a Role in Your

Immune Function Too

Muscle is increasingly recognized as an organ with immune regulatory properties. As such, skeletal muscle cells modulate immune function by signaling through different soluble factors, cell surface molecules or cell-to-cell interactions. It is also speculated that sarcopenia contributes to immunosenescence — the gradual deterioration of your immune system — which is a leading cause of death in the elderly.

Additionally, recent reviews found strong evidence that frailty due to sarcopenia is a risk factor for adverse outcomes, such as longer hospital stay, functional decline at discharge and both in-hospital and medium, lower quality of life, and long-term mortality.

My Strategy and Recommendation to Combat Sarcopenia

So, what can we do about this progressive decline in muscle loss that sets you up for frailty and metabolic catastrophe? Why, exercise, of course. But here's a little-known fact: Despite the well-known benefits of resistance training, less than 10% of those under the age of 75 in the United States participate in muscle-strengthening activities.

I believe one of the main reasons for this low rate of participation is that over half of those who do exercise engage in conventional resistance training end up getting injured. Another reason is that conventional strength training is considerably less effective in healthy older adults than in young adults.

This blunted anabolic response to exercise training in older individuals is likely a result of the age‐related decline in muscle fiber perfusion.

This has been known for a long time. Seventeenth century physician Dr. Thomas Sydenham, who is known as the "English Hippocrates," recognized nearly 400 years ago that vascular health and aging are interdependent and inversely related. His famous quote is: "A man is as old as his arteries."

Microcirculation is the term used to describe blood flow through the capillaries. The main function of the microcirculation is the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues while removing CO2, metabolic debris and toxins. Researchers believe this is related to a decrease in muscle fiber microcirculation of Type II muscle fibers and their associated stem cells.

Studies have shown that Type II muscle fiber-associated stem cells are located at a greater distance to their nearest capillary in older compared with younger men. There are a large number of circulating growth factors that are regulators of stem cell function and the delivery of these signals to activate your muscle stem cells and promote muscle growth relies on how close they are to the capillaries.

Once your microcirculation becomes compromised with age, Type II muscle fibers and their associated stem cells will be unable to receive enough nutrients and oxygen. Thankfully, there is a solution to this dilemma, and it is called blood flow restriction (BFR) or KAATSU in Japan, which is where it originated.

How I Radically Changed My Exercise and Lean Muscle

Now, I am no stranger to exercise. I have been exercising since 1968, which is 54 years. The problem is that the first 43 years were exclusively cardio, and in my case long distance running. I like to compete, so I got relatively decent and was eventually able to run a 2:50 marathon, which was good enough back then to get me on the postgraduate University of Chicago Track Club.

Unfortunately, I didn't realize that while cardiovascular exercise can lower your risk of heart disease, it is a highly catabolic activity and will actually lower your ability to build muscle. Below is a picture of me taken during my peak running condition. As you can see by the arrow, I had a "gigantic," 10.5-inch arm circumference.

The blue plates are 45 pounds each;

the black ones are the same width as the blue ones, but are plastic and are 25 pounds; and the bar is 50 pounds. My team wanted me to do a story on how I did this to, hopefully, inspire you to similar, if not better, levels of strength.

I'm very proud to say that I've come even further since then and, now, even approaching 70, I've been able to regularly set personal records with some of the lifts that I'm doing, and have deadlifted four plates, which is 405 pounds.

The BEST Strategy I Know of to Increase Muscle Size

There are loads of ways to increase your muscle mass but they mostly involve moving, pushing or pulling heavy weights or resistance bands. The problem with this strategy is that if you are not in good shape, and especially if you are elderly, there is a very high likelihood that you will get injured. In most cases, it is not if you will get injured but when.

The answer to this problem is an exercise strategy known as BFR or KAATSU. As the name implies, BFR involves modifying the arterial inflow and venous outflow while you're working the muscle by placing an inflatable band around the extremity. It is not like a tourniquet that stops all your blood flow, which is dangerous.

BFR was developed by Dr. Yoshiaki Sato of Japan about 50 years ago. In Japan, where it's widely popular, it's known as KAATSU, meaning "training with added pressure." However since Sato does not speak or write English, the first article published about it in the U.S. was about 25 years ago.

Conventional resistance training typically uses resistance at 70% to 85% of your one-rep max, i.e., the maximum amount of weight you can lift only one time. Since this weight is relatively heavy and close to your limit, injuries are almost guaranteed.

BFR is different, as it is a low-intensity

resistance training, using weights that are just 20% to 35% of your one-rep max. With weights this light, your risk of injury is largely eliminated. In many elderly and frail individuals, weights of just 1 or 2 pounds, or no weight other than your body, are all that is needed to achieve the benefits.

How BFR Works

BFR's ability to achieve such remarkable physiological benefits is directly related to slowing venous blood flow from the muscle group being engaged and creating a relatively hypoxic environment or low oxygen pressures in the exercising muscle.

Venous flow moderation is optimally achieved by wrapping the extremity being exercised with an inflatable cuff or band.

The band needs to be tight enough to slow venous return to the heart, allowing venous blood to "pool" in the region of the limb that is being exercised, while loose enough to allow arterial blood to flow through.

With very light exercise, and in about 15 to 20 minutes, you get an exhaustive workout that sends a signal to your brain that says, "Hey, I've done something really hard here — you better help me recover and adapt to it."

Your brain then sends out hormonal responses that cause your muscles and blood vessels to grow. Most would think that such light weights would be insufficient to provide any muscle strength improvements, but studies show a 36% to 40% increase in muscle strength after only 12 weeks, depending on your load and health.

BFR Mimics Heavy Weight Training Without Any of the Risks

BFR training is frequently misunderstood as simply a conventional resistance training program with the addition of resistance bands. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Because the exercise is done with such low weights, there's far less muscle fiber trauma and damage, especially relative to conventional strength training. This means you are able to recover much quicker, so you don't have to dig yourself out of a hole the next few days. In most cases, you can exercise different body parts nearly every day and rapidly attain the metabolic and physical benefits.

To understand the mechanism of BFR you need to know that you have two basic types of muscle fibers. First you have slow-twitch oxidative (Type I) fibers designed for low-intensity long-lasting contractions. Secondly, you have fast-twitch glycolytic (Type II) fibers designed for high-intensity short-duration contractions. When you lose muscle, it typically occurs as a reduction in Type II muscle fibers.

If you are going to increase muscle mass and strength in anyone, but especially the elderly, it is important to activate Type II muscle fibers during training, since these fibers have been shown to be far more responsive to growing muscle than Type I fibers and are generally much larger.

Weight training done at low weights will not activate Type II fibers — unless it's done with BFR. Type I fibers are relatively more sensitive than type II fibers to hypoxia (low blood oxygen), as they have a greater oxygen consumption at rest compared to Type II fibers. BFR training takes advantage of this difference. Producing a relatively hypoxic environment in your muscles causes premature fatigue of the Type l fibers, thus forcing your body to rely on Type II fibers to continue the exercise.

At the same time, you're also activating their associated muscle stem cells. This is likely one of the main mechanisms by which BFR can trigger muscle growth and prevent or prevent or treat sarcopenia. Simply moving light weights with high repetition without BFR will not engage Type II

fibers because there is plenty of oxygen for the Type I fibers to work. Hence, the fast-twitch Type II fibers just aren't called into action.

How BFR Affects Your Muscles and Overall Health

When you exercise and activate your Type 2 fibers with BFR, your muscles will generate a waste product called lactic acid or lactate, which is responsible for much of the metabolic magic. Activating Type 2 fibers also lowers the pH of the muscles. This is not because of lactic acid, but more related to the release of extra protons released in generating energy.

Both lactate and proton accumulation are potent stimulators of growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), which in turn leads to muscle growth. IGF-1 is a hormone that helps manage growth hormone (GH) in the body. It's typically made by your liver, which is the largest contributor to IGF1 circulating in your blood. However, when your liver secretes IGF-1, it will not act on those tissues that have capabilities of producing the hormone themselves, such as skeletal muscle.

Interestingly, it is not the circulating levels of IGF-1 in your blood that cause your muscles to grow but, rather, the IGF-1 produced by your muscles when engaged in exercises like BFR, as that's the key determinant for switching on the anabolic muscle building pathways.

While high levels of IGF-1 in your blood will inhibit autophagy and decrease your longevity, this does not appear to be the case when you increase IGF-1 in your muscle using anaerobic exercises like BFR. This IGF1 does not leak out into your blood to suppress autophagy.

BFR will not only will add solid muscle mass, but also significantly increase your strength and endurance while reducing your body fat. For most people who are not competitive athletes, it's really the only form of resistance training they need.

Competitive athletes also seem to benefit from BFR, but they would need to combine it with conventional strength training. In short, BFR works on a very simple principle: It tricks your body into believing that it's moving far heavier weights than you're actually using, and as a result generates compensatory metabolic responses, further detailed below.

Local and Systemic Effects of BFR

If you are elderly, what is really amazing is that your muscle growth with BFR is beyond what strength training with heavy weights can do. This is because you need good blood flow to your Type II muscle fiber stem cells, and as mentioned earlier, virtually everyone's microcirculation decreases with age.

So, even if you send the signal to grow by doing conventional strength training, it won't work as well if there isn't enough capillary supply to your Type II fiber stem cells. BFR increases your microcirculation, your capillaries and venules and arterioles that are associated with them (see image below), largely because your muscles are working in a hypoxic (low oxygen) environment.

How BFR Increases Your Microcirculation

This low oxygen tension causes the release of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1 alpha), which in turn increases the hormone vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which is one of the most powerful angiogenic signals in your body. It's an extremely potent pro-blood vessel building cytokine or myokine. VEGF will help repair damage that has occurred to your blood vessels, improve elasticity and make them far more resilient to damage and accidents.

BFR has been shown to raise VEGF levels by 410% in young adults.

Essentially it acts as "fertilizer" for growing new blood vessels and capillaries to your muscle stem cells. BFR training has been shown to increase muscle stem cells by 300% after eight days of training.

Here is the KEY point: The VEGF released by BFR is systemic and carried in your blood to your entire body. It just doesn't work on the limbs you are exercising. It increases blood vessel growth throughout your entire body, which seems to be the perfect antidote for Dr. Syndenham's theory that a man is old as his arteries.

In short, BFR will help aging men have the arteries of boys. VEGF also increases microcirculation in your brain and heart. In Japan, BFR is frequently used for stroke and cardiac rehab precisely for this purpose.

BFR also increases the production of the important regulatory free radical, nitric oxide (NO), which further contributes to an increase in VEGF. NO is an important signaling molecule produced at high levels in muscle by neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS). BFR, by way of increasing NO, has been found to stimulate muscle satellite stem cells and proliferation.

There is a load of interest in NAD+, as it's a primary fuel for longevity proteins, and it becomes depleted as you age. A combination of BFR along with 50 milligrams of niacinamide per day will radically increase NAMPT, which is the rate limiting enzyme for NAD+. Honoring your circadian rhythm is also an important part of the equation.

Why I Only Recommend KAATSU Cycle Mode

The KAATSU set is ideal as it is far easier to dial in to the correct pressures. You also get the benefit of intermittent pressure automatically, without having to adjust the bands yourself. With the KAATSU system you can control the tightness in two ways.

The initial tightness is after you

manually tighten the bands. This is the base pressure and typically around 10 to 25 mm/Hg for the arms and 15 to 35 mm/Hg for the legs, depending on your age, vascular elasticity and physical condition.

The inflation pressure is what you set the compressor to pump the cuff up to. This ranges from 80 to 400 mm/Hg for both the arms and legs. KAATSU is the only unit that will cycle the inflation of the bands on and off, which, again, is far healthier for your muscles.

"I gradually increase the pressure on each set, personally, doing up to eight sets. The first set has no effect, but my muscles pump up significantly from the sixth to eighth sets. If you do that for two or three circuits, the KAATSU cycle mode will have the same effect as the KAATSU constant mode. Therefore, I recommend the KAATSU cycle mode to the general public."

How to Determine Your Ideal Level of Resistance

Instead of using heavy weights that can increase your risk of injury during conventional strength training, BFR requires just 20% to 33% of the resistance used in conventional resistance training, which makes it much safer for everyone. This light weight is then combined with a high volume of repetitions while externally applied compression mildly restricts blood flow to the active skeletal muscles in the legs or arms.

As for weight, your goal is to find the "sweet" spot. If you are elderly or have not been exercising regularly, this may mean no weights at all.

Ideally, you would have access to a variety of progressively increasing resistance movements to choose from, including body weight exercises. You typically won't need to go higher than 25 pounds, though.

Once you have access to the weights, you can find the heaviest weight you can do for just one repetition of your

planned exercise. This is your one-rep max (1RM).

Then you divide that weight by five (20%), four (25%) or three (33%). For example, if your max weight for a bicep curl is 25 pounds, you would select a 5-pound dumbbell to start.

If you don't know your one-rep maximum, then it is always better to start too low, especially if this is your first time, as your tissues will need time to adapt to these pressures and movements. Eventually you will want to increase your weight so you notice the following signs during your KAATSU session.

Signs That You Are Using the Correct Weight

1. You are sweating profusely. In fact, you should be sweating so much that you need a towel.

2. Your heart rate and breathing can significantly increase, especially if you do intense BFR or any kind of vigorous aerobic exercise.

These two signs are an indication that you have activated your sympathetic nervous system by firing your Type II muscle fibers. This is because properly performed BFR is a high intensity exercise that will exhaust your Type I muscle fibers and activate your Type II fibers.

You can also measure the circumference of your limb before and after the exercise. You should notice an increase of at least one-half inch and possibly 1 inch or more — or, alternatively, the muscle will most certainly feel tighter and appear more toned.

Another great indication is that you will be able to do 30 reps the first set and then 15 to 20 reps the next and, most likely, are unable to do five to 10 reps in the last set because you are in muscle failure. It is important, though, not to fool yourself and stop just because it

is hard. Muscle failure means that you are unable to do another rep if your life depended on it.

Unless you are just starting (see warning box below), it is best to start by limiting your weight to only 20% of your 1RM and build up from there. By starting at a lighter weight, it will give your body a chance to adjust to BFR and avoid potential injuries.

An additional benefit is that if you stick with lighter weights you can train more frequently because you won't cause as much muscle damage. For those interested in greater strength or muscle gains, you can increase to one-quarter and then to one-third the weight of your 1RM. If you are doing the exercises correctly, it will likely take you about three months to progress up to 33% of your 1RM. There is no need to go any higher than this.

If you don't know your 1RM, then all you have to do is pick a weight you believe you can easily do 30 reps with and start there. If you can easily do all three sets at that weight, then it's clearly too low a weight and you would benefit from increasing the resistance, especially if you don't notice an increase of at least one-half inch in the circumference of your biceps after the exercise.

Conversely, if you are unable to complete 20 repetitions on your first set, the resistance is likely too high and needs to be decreased.

WARNING FOR FIRST-TIME USERS

The only exception to these weight recommendations and initial pressure of the bands is when you are first starting out. It is important to realize that your tissues need time to adjust to BFR training. For the first session, you want to start with a light pressure, likely under 40%, and use only 10% of your 1RM. Then over the next two sessions increase to the minimum recommendations.

Reduce Pre-Pesach Stress Through Understanding Hilchos Pesach

Diminishing Pre-Pesach stress begins with knowledge of this basic principle: The Halochos of eating Chometz are very stringent, but the Halochos of OWNING chometz are much less so. Below are Torah scholars' directives regarding owning chometz and cleaning for Pesach. (Notes in parenthesis and brackets are explanatory comments. Also, italics and bold are added for emphasis.)

RAV CHAIM PINCHOS SCHEINBERG Zatzal, Rosh Yeshiva of Torah Ohr in Yerushalayim, taught the following:

• If, during the year, chometz is not brought into a place, that place does not have to be cleaned out or checked for chometz

• The general obligation to check for & get rid of crumbs does not apply if the crumbs are less than the size of a k’zayis [an olive] and are dirty or spoiled enough to deter a person from eating them. (A kzayis is around 1/2 - 1 ounce.)

• The cleaning product (regular household cleanser) must spoil the crumbs (only) slightly, to the extent that people would refrain from eating them.

Rabbi Barclay and Rabbi Jaeger, authors of the Guideline Halacha Series, write that there are two mitzvos connected to the possession of chometz:

• Not to see chometz or find it in one’s possessions (Lo Yeraeh and Lo Yemotzei)

• To dispose of it (Tashbisu)

According to Torah law, it is enough to either get rid of the chometz, or to declare it null and void. Our sages required both for three reasons:

• Our declaration should be sincere.

• We shouldn’t accidentally eat chometz (that’s lying around)

• In order that overlooked chometz be included.

“If the chometz is dirty, then only a piece that is the size of a k’zayis (or larger) must be removed.”

“If the chometz is edible, then even a smaller [than a k’zayis] piece that one may be tempted to eat must be removed.”

“Therefore, when cleaning for Pesach one must remove small pieces of edible chometz and large pieces of inedible chometz.”

Books: Rabbi Barclay and Rabbi Jaeger also write that there is no need to check books, except for books that will be brought to the table. Those books should be either new or well cleaned.

Bentchers used the whole year should not be

used on Pesach; they should be put away with the chometz because they often contain crumbs and are difficult to clean. (Nowhere is it mentioned that the chometz crumbs have to be removed or that the bentchers and zemiros books have to be sold, even though chometz crumbs remain in them. The only rule is that they should be put away so that they are not accidentally brought to the table on Pesach.)

Toys that will be used on Pesach should be cleaned with soapy water and checked. Other toys should be put away. Special toys for Pesach are recommended.

Clothing that won’t be worn on Pesach needs only a quick check. “Since they are not going to be worn, there is no concern that one may eat any crumbs that are there. Small crumbs do not have to be removed since there is no prohibition to own them during Pesach.”

Light switches and door handles should be cleaned when necessary (After we touch them, we may touch Pesach food, and the laws forbidding eating chometz are most stringent, as mentioned. Pens, pencils, combs, and hair brushes which might have some sticky residue might also be in the same category.).

Carpets: Vacuuming a carpet cleans it sufficiently, since any remaining crumbs are not fit for eating.

Toaster: Since a toaster will not be used on Pesach, it is sufficient to remove loose crumbs by shaking the toaster well and putting it away with the chometz utensils. The chometz pots do not have to be scrubbed. Some have the custom to check the pots for chometz

Rabbi Yaakov Zev Smith, a maggid shiur for Irgun Shiurei Torah, explains: “The Gemara says that after bedikas chometz one still needs to annul the chometz. This requirement is not because of crumbs which may be scattered in the house; rather, it is a protection against a big piece of chometz. The reason we do not worry about crumbs is that since they are on the floor they have no importance to us and are “selfannulled” (Pesachim 6b).”

He explains further that the Chayei Adam (119:6) is of the opinion that one must clean crevices of crumbs within hand’s reach. This is not because of the prohibition to see or have chometz in one’s possession – but because we are concerned that one might inadvertently eat them”.1

The Pri Chadash (444-4) and the Igros Moshe (1145) disagree with this stringency.

However, the commonly held custom is to follow the Chayei Adam’s ruling and clean out all easily accessible places where crumbs might be found.

The Chazon Ish (122:8) cites the Gra in stating that crumbs caught between the floorboards do not have to be removed. Even if there are many crumbs that add up collectively to a k’zayis, they are not a problem halachically, because they are dried out and unappetizing.

“The requirement for chometz to actually be unfit for canine consumption (inedible to a dog) only applies to a k’zayis.” (Magen Avraham; Mishnah Berurah).

Rabbi Smith continues: What about chometz that is bigger than a crumb yet smaller than a k’zayis? An example might be a pretzel, or half a cookie. “While small crumbs are insignificant and are automatically nullified, these bits of food (which are identifiable things) are in a category of their own.”

These pieces of chometz (larger than a crumb yet smaller than a k’zayis) should be removed. (Shulchan Aruch Harav; Mishnah Berurah)

Extra effort in cleaning away chometz is part of a heilige minhag. In practice, we give the greatest energy to areas that our Pesach food and our hands will touch/contact on Pesach2 (This helps prevent the possibility of eating any chometz on Pesach. And while this is true, give careful note to the following paragraph.)

This minhag must be practiced according to each person’s strength and energy. And only up to where it does not take away from health, safety, and joy in the Heilige Yom Tov.

Anything written above should not be used by husbands and children as an excuse for not helping make the house clean and shining, as well as kosher for Pesach. It is indeed part of the signature of Pesach to have a home that is extraspecial clean. The wholehearted participation— without criticism—of husband and children, makes a big difference and brings much joy to the Yom Tov.

May we all be zocheh to clean and prepare for the Yom Tov of Pesach without excessive strain or fear, but with anticipation and happiness. The shock washed over me in waves, before feelings of fear, anger, and worry took over.

That morning, I had decided to clean the children’s bedrooms for Pesach. The work proceeded pleasantly and smoothly, without interruptions.

When I stood before the closet of my eldest son, whom we’ll call Shmuel Dovid, I glanced at the organized shelves with pleasure. Fifteen-year-old Shmuel Dovid was always an obedient child who wanted to do what’s right. At that point, he was learning diligently, had many good friends, and davened with great concentration.

He was the child everyone dreamed of.

The cleaning-help was busy moving away the beds, changing the linen, and washing the walls. Meanwhile, I took care of the drawers and closets. I emptied each shelf separately, wiped off the shelf, and packed everything back neatly.

Until I reached the pile of Shmuel Dovid’s white shirts.

The shirts were fine…but the object lying concealed in middle of the pile literally took my breath away.

It was very well-hidden, in one of the shirts on bottom of the pile. I picked up the new, shiny Smartphone and stood immobile for a very long moment.

The cleaning-help asked me something, but I couldn’t figure out what she was saying.

“Just do the best you can,” I told her, before I quickly walked out of the room with the contraband.

The Smartphone was in my hand, its sharp contours digging into my palm.

“Ribono shel Olam!” I cried out in my heart. “How could this happen?! Shmuel Dovid is such a good, ehrliche bochur! Everyone marvels at his diligence, at his tefillos, at his pure goodness! He seems so happy, both at home and in yeshivah. Why is he searching in foreign, frightening fields?!”

Everything that I thought I knew and believed about my son was suddenly placed under a big question-mark. Who knows what Shmuel Dovid really thinks, wants and feels? What does he do with his free time? Does he have friends that we don’t know about?

The questions niggled at me for hours. I put the Smartphone in my room, until we would decide how to proceed. I thought about my kosher flip-phone that’s not even textenabled, and I cried, “Shmuel Dovid! Where is this coming from?! Where did you see this?!”

And suddenly, I knew.

Several months earlier, my husband had acquired a Smartphone strictly for work purposes. He felt that it would bring the business up several notches, and that he could be trusted to use it responsibly.

It was used responsibly and only at the office…but Shmuel Dovid knew that his father owned a Smartphone. That which had previously been off-limits suddenly became permissible and even desirable.

I looked at the pile of crisp white shirts in Shmuel Dovid’s closet and I knew that we – his parents – must do everything in the world to ensure that his neshama remains pure and white.

I picked up the telephone to call my husband. The first step would have to come from us…
