Michoel has many questions; he asks to speak with the ones in charge of the "hospital."

The private investigator is unsure if Mike has gotten involved in a cult, or if the place he's at is some kind of eating disorders clinic.

Martin offers Hinda and Dov to fly to America to search for Michoel.

CHAPTER FORTY SIX

Dr. Jerry Skulholt’s office was designed with clean lines, and was rather empty—in line with Michoel Perl’s taste. The wooden chairs were simple and straight, and actually pretty comfortable. The square desk was perfectly matched to the closet, and together, they blended in with the large window frame that took up most of the western wall. Perl felt a strong urge to examine the room more closely, but he knew that it was not a good idea. He was sitting and waiting for the doctor to come in; in the meantime, out of boredom, he studied the three square, framed pictures on the wall opposite him.

Someone closed the door. Michoel turned around. “You are Dr. Skulholt?” His arched eyebrows almost knitted together when he saw the man who, in the early days of his stay, had called him “Dad.”

“Yes, I’m Dr. Jerry Skulholt. Pleasure to meet you.” The man smiled and shook Michoel's hand. Then He turned to the closet, opened the top door, and with slow movements—Perl did not know if it was deliberate or not—he took out a large purple binder. Michoel

despised the color.

The man sat down on the other side of the desk. “I’m happy to see that you feel better, so that we can really get to know each other,” he said as he pulled a gold pen out of his pocket.

“I’m also happy to be feeling better,” Michoel said politely.

Dr. Skulholt put down the binder. “What can you tell me about yourself, Mr. Perl?”

Michoel shifted to a more comfortable position. “That I don’t remember how I got here,” he said heavily.

“What is the last memory you have before you found yourself here with us?”

Michoel thought about it for a minute, and then shook his head. “I have lots of jumbled memories,” he said. “I have no idea in what sequence they happened. I think there was a wedding, but I’m not sure. Maybe I was just taking one of my regular flights.”

“Do you remember a flight?”

“No, but I’m clearly not in Israel, where I live, now.”

“How is that clear to you?”

Michoel bit his lip. “I'm not sure. I just know.”

“Because of the language spoken here?”

“Well, that also, but it's not only that…”

“And what are your ‘regular flights’? Why do you usually fly? For business?”

Michoel looked at the horrible purple binder out of the corner of his eye and said quietly, “I don’t know.”

“Okay. Let’s go back to my original question: Please try

to tell me something about yourself.” The man put the pen down after a moment of rapid writing. “It doesn’t matter what. Family, place of residence, profession…”

“Family? Well, my last name is Perl. Place of residence? Jerusalem, Israel.”

“You’re sure?”

“I think so…” He sat up straighter. “But I think we’ve spoken enough about me. Maybe you, Mr. Doctor, can tell me a bit about yourself, about your brother—the executive director—and about this whole place. Who brought me here?”

She hadn’t had such a quiet, empty morning for a long time. Dov was at work, their guest was apparently holed up in the little studio apartment they had arranged for him on the top floor, and there were no new mothers convalescing in her house.

Hinda sat down to work, but before she even had a chance to glance at the plans that she’d gotten, a call came from Michoel. His voice was thicker than usual, and Hinda didn’t know whether to blame the phone line, the distance, or an actual change.

“Michoel!” she said, and then fell silent.

“How are you, Hinda?” he asked.

“Baruch Hashem. I’ve been worried about you lately.”

“Yes,” he said, with a sigh. “There was what to worry about. I was injured in a serious accident, and my documents were apparently taken. Then I was unconscious for a long while, and I also have a bad case of amnesia.”

Something about the way he formulated his sentences was strange; it was not his regular way of speaking, though Hinda couldn’t put her finger on exactly what the problem was. She also remembered the intercom, when he’d spoken in a slightly funny manner and—oops, no. That had been Martin, whose Hebrew was passable, but not great.

“And we didn’t know anything about it!” she exclaimed. Martin’s planned trip seemed to be superfluous. “Where are you hospitalized? I want to come to you.”

“I…don’t know where I am hospitalized. They’re letting my memory come back at its own pace, so I still don’t have any idea where exactly I am.”

“Have you come back from Mexico yet?”

“I’m not in Mexico,” he answered.

“Are you in Israel?”

“Maybe. Maybe not. It doesn’t seem so.”

“So, can I speak to the staff? I want to hear from them what is happening and where you are. You can’t be alone like that.”

Michoel was quiet for a long moment, and then said, “They don’t recommend relatives’ visits; they say it might restore my memory too aggressively.”

“Can you give me the phone number to this place?”

“The doctors don’t want you to contact them; they want to speak only to me.”

Hinda’s forehead creased. How was it responsible for the staff to not want to find out a bit of their patient’s medical background from relatives?

“I’ll try to call more often,” Michoel said, as if trying to appease her. “I remember your number already, so it will be much simpler.”

“You called me a while ago already.”

“I did?” Michoel paused again. “Could be.”

Hinda played with the phone cord. “It’s good that we can speak at least by phone, even if it’s not face to face,” she said resignedly. “Still, I think it would be a good idea for you to tell them that your only niece wants to be in touch with them. I want to hear directly about your condition, what the prognosis is, and if there’s anything more that can be done.”

“Hinda,” he said sharply, “I really appreciate your concern and dedication, you know, but I don’t like it when people interfere too much in my affairs. You remember that, right?”

“Yes, of course,” she said, and glanced at the phone for a minute to confirm that this conversation was actually taking place. Michoel was talking to her; he was alive, and responding to the point. Responding like Michoel. “There’s just one thing, something that you got involved in some time back, and I think that I owe you an apology for it…” he said, his tone suddenly sounding different. “I’ve thought a lot about the shidduch you once suggested, with your friend, Freiberg or something… Do you remember?”

“Yes,” Hinda whispered. Was he actually apologizing for the way he had verbally attacked her back then, when she’d dared suggest Brachi Freiberg, a neighbor of her parents, aleihem hashalom, for him? He had fumed that she was suggesting a divorcee while he had never been married before, and that Brachi had three children and almost no money.

But what had suddenly bought this story—which was history, in her view—back to the fore? In the nearly thirty years that had passed since she'd suggested the

shidduch, the whole matter had receded into some hole deep in her brain. Brachi was almost seventy by now, and happily remarried. She had her own grandchildren, her husband’s grandchildren, and at least two from the son they'd had together.

Michoel coughed. She didn’t know if it was just the awkwardness of it all; something about it sounded too genuine. “I don’t remember when exactly you made that suggestion," he said. “But I remember you said that it’s something really good… Based on my calculations, she should be about forty, forty-five now. And if she’s still interested in getting married, maybe we can revisit that shidduch… I was too arrogant back then, I think.”

Mike’s medical forms had just one record of a visit to a clinical dietician, but Paul Kanishevsky, the dietician he'd seen, refused to give her parents any information, as Mike was over age eighteen.

Still, Daddy had said that the private investigator had ways of obtaining information even if the clinical dietician wasn’t happy to give it, and he came back two days later and said that indeed, it was noted that Mike was suspected of developing anorexia nervosa, and it was wise to keep an eye on it.

It was not clear to her what the words ‘suspected of developing’ meant—what was this, ballistic missiles? These adults and the way they used words… It was funny, as were those people in the medical field who also liked to use strange words.

“Anorexia nervosa,” the investigator told Mommy and Daddy. “That confirms what we suspected. Either he is hospitalized in some eating disorder department, or he is in South Carolina by those guys. They ostensibly treat mental illness.”

“Anorexia nervosa? For a boy?” Mommy wondered.

“The percentage of males who suffer from this is indeed one-twentieth of females, but still, if we speak about America alone, that’s tens of thousands of people.”

“But he’s not even thin,” Daddy protested. “They always say anorexics become skeletal, don’t they? He’s nowhere near looking like that!”

“He was doing lots of sports in recent weeks,” Mommy murmured. “Maybe to lose weight.”

“But he wasn’t very successful.”

“Still, the dietician took this possibility seriously; he probably showed enough of the symptoms,” the investigator interjected.

Becky wanted to say that he was speaking nonsense. Because there had been one time, maybe two weeks before Mike disappeared, that he had taken a huge serving of ice cream, and had offered her a cone too. Then he didn’t feel so good, and he even threw up… He threw up! She was almost sure of it. She didn’t wait, and took the stairs two at a time, dashing right into the open door of Daddy’s study.

“Becky?!” her father chided sternly.

“There were more symptoms, Daddy, Mommy,” she said, not looking at the investigator.

“More symptoms?” Mommy asked.

“Yes. He threw up once,” she said, and suddenly she felt very embarrassed. A big girl didn’t listen to adult conversations, and certainly didn’t mix in, especially when there were strangers around who would think that she was talking nonsense and that she was an impolite child with no manners.

Well, it was sometimes very hard to be polite, but she had to at least try.

“I’m sorry,” she said, and swallowed. She turned back to the stairs to go up to her room. She was supposed to be doing math homework now; too bad she hadn’t stayed doing just that.

“Don’t go, Becky,” Daddy said. She couldn’t decide if he sounded angry or not. “Come in, we want to hear more. When did Mike throw up?”

“One night, about…maybe a month ago. You weren’t home from work yet, and Mommy was…I don’t remember where Mommy was.”

“And what happened?” Mommy asked quietly.

“Mike was in the kitchen, and he was eating ice cream. He gave me some also. Then he said he didn’t feel well, and that the ice cream was dancing in his stomach. He was pale, and he sat on the chair without moving. Then he went to the bathroom, and I heard him almost crying there. And I think he also threw up.”

PROLOGUE:

Sometimes, all it takes is a knock on your head to help you discover the shining truth. It is then that all jagged glass pieces fall into place, revealing a luminous prism of light, catching the golden rays of the sun, and spreading a rainbow hue of joy into the world.

Trust me, that knock isn’t pleasant. It wasn’t pleasant for me; it was painful as can be. But I wouldn’t exchange that pain for any money in the world.

The day started just like any other: Jump out of bed, brush teeth, throw a slice of bread and cheese into knapsack, grab coffee, shout “Bye, Ma!” and meet Huva at the corner to walk to school together.

“Morning, Huvs,” I greeted her with a wave and tired smile.

Huva sipped her coffee and waved back. We fell into each other’s comfortable step and continued to school. Entering the familiar doors of Ateres Tzipora always filled us with the pride and comfort that only eight years of school can produce. Ateres Tzipora was our home away from home, but now that we were finally in eighth grade, we would soon be moving on.

I can still clearly recall exactly where I was standing when the bombshell was dropped. I was walking into the Cheder Tefilla, siddur in hand, when I heard my name being mentioned. I knew that eavesdropping was wrong, but hey, I was simply passing by the open door of my principal’s office. I stopped walking and remained glued to my spot.

And that’s where Mrs. Kreisman found me twenty minutes later.

“Tehilla?” I looked up to face a concerned but slightly annoyed assistant principal. “Shacharis began twenty minutes ago.” She suddenly noticed my tear-streaked face and gave a little startled jump back. “Uh… everything all right?”

I forced a huge smile onto my face and whispered, “Of course. Sorry, I just came a little late today.”

Mrs. Kreisman still looked unsure, so I simply said, “I am on my way to Tefilla. Can I go?”

She gave a barely imperceptible nod. I fled.

I don’t know how I made it through to the end

of the day without falling apart. All I know is that for the first time in ten years, I chose to walk home to my house on my own. For the first time in ten years, I didn’t want to know the girl named Huvi, my close friend and confidante since kindergarten, ten years ago.

CHAPTER ONE:

“So? What do you say, Tehilla, blue or beige?” I looked up from the laundry I was folding. The blue dress was pretty, but the beige was unique.

“Hmmm… I think I like the blue. I mean, you can’t go wrong with dark blue, can you?”

A tinkling laugh followed my comment. “Practical and honest, as usual, Tehilla!” Huva folded both outfits and tucked it into the bag. I knew what was coming next. “Hey, do you want to come with me to the store to return the beige one?”

I sighed. “Huva, you know my mother said I need to fold all of the laundry before I leave the house. And we have a Chumash test tomorrow that I still didn’t start studying for. I think that you should go on your own.”

Huva looked at me. “Are you sure that I shouldn’t help you fold laundry, study for the Chumash test, and then go shopping with you to celebrate?” Her eyes twinkled. I smiled, a warm feeling spreading across my heart. “Huva, the store will be closed by then!”

As I walked her to the door, and gently closed it behind her, I once again was filled with gratitude to Hashem for the wonderful gift called Huva.

Huva had joined our kindergarten class in the middle of the year, having moved from Los Angeles to Brooklyn. We took to each other instantly, and never looked back.

I continued folding the laundry- a mindnumbing chore that basically never ended. High school…I hoped we would continue on together. Ateres Tzipora didn’t have a high school, so all of us eighth graders had to apply to at least three Brooklyn High Schools. Huva and I both knew one thing:

Wherever we went, we would go together. Because high school without Huva is no high school at all. ***

Chava Kaplan furrowed her brow. She stared at the phone in her hands as the hollow sound of the ringtone resounded in the room. Did that really just happen?

Chava Kaplan liked to believe that all people were truly kind inside, and although at times she had been the recipient of an unkindness, it was simply coming from deep inner pain, not cruelty.

So then how can she explain this unsettling phone call? And what did it mean for her and her family? It had seemed so ordinary, so innocent. She had tucked the phone under her snood and continued to stir the pot of steaming mushroom soup when the call came in.

“Mrs. Kaplan?” The voice on the phone was brusque, domineering.

“Hello, and who am I speaking with?” her warm voice floated through the wires.

“It doesn’t really matter. I am calling to let you know to stop doing this. How can a Jewish mother stand by idly and watch her own family behave like this? Mrs. Kaplan, I simply don’t understand you!”

Chava froze. What on earth? Was this a bored teenager on a prank call?

“Look, I am not sure what you are referring to. I think you have reached the wrong family. Perhaps you are confusing me with a different family Kaplan. I have not a clue what you are talking about. Have a wonderful day,” and she firmly pressed the end button.

It only hit her now that the woman hadn’t called on her home phone. It had been her cell phone. It couldn’t have been a phony call, she decided, because she knew my name and cell phone number. The mushroom soup was bubbling, and the oven timer rang.

A tray of perfectly baked chocolate chip cookies was removed from the oven. Chava faintly heard the whimper of a baby in the background.

Back to business, she thought weakly,

Motti was up and awake. Motti was too young to understand that this was the wrong time to beg for care. For the first time in a very long time, Mrs. Chava Kaplan, superwoman and supermom extraordinaire, craved some tender loving care for herself.

Motti shrieked again, his cries growing louder and desperate by the minute. Chava removed herself from her frozen state and wondered again if she was overreacting. Technically, a bored teen could have dug up her cell phone number, too. And her family wasn’t doing anything that necessitated this phone call. It didn’t make sense, did it?

The door swung open as she rocked Motti back and forth in her arms. A gust of wind accompanied Tehilla’s soft footfall into the house.

“How was your day?” she asked distractedly, trying to stir the pot of soup and feed her baby a bottle at the same time. No answer. Chava looked up. “Tehilla?” ***

“Mommy, I…” Tears burst forth from my eyes and loud, wracking sobs shook my body.

Alarmed, my mother quickly put Motti down on the floor and ran to where I was standing.

“What happened, my dear? Tell me now!”

As much as I wanted to, the words just wouldn’t come. There was an icy hand gripping my throat, refusing to let me speak.

There was a monster in the room, filling the kitchen with gray misty smoke, filling my lungs with pollution and despair, leaving me worn out, broken, and helpless. “Tehilla, please. Try to calm down. I need to know what is going on.”

I stared into Ma’s warm brown eyes. So filled with caring and love for the daughter she raised and admired. I was lucky to have a supportive mother who was always guiding me and gently prodding me in the right direction.

Ten minutes and two chocolate chip

cookies later, I finally eked the story out.

“I was passing the principal’s office on the way to the cheder tefilla,” I began. “The bell had just rang, and I was in a rush. But then I heard my name being mentioned. The principal said something like- What will be with Tehilla Kaplan? What are we going to do with her? And Ma, I know I shouldn’t have listened, but like, hello, I am Tehilla Kaplan, and I don’t have issues that can cause a principal to sigh about me like that!” The words were tumbling out now in a rush, having kept them bottled up inside all day.

“She was on the phone with someone. She was telling them that,” my voice caught in my throat. “She was telling them that my family is unstable and that I secretly use technology in a way that I shouldn’t. She was also saying how worried she was about getting me into high school. Who would ever want to accept the local dropout?”

If it wouldn’t have happened to me, it would’ve been comical. Tehilla Kaplan, GO coordinator and top girl in the grade, should have a hard time getting into high school? I half expected my mother not to believe me, to think I maybe heard the wrong name. What happened next was so quick and shocking, I hardly had a second to look up.

My mother’s face turned ghastly white as she gripped the kitchen chair in front of her.

“Ma!”

The room spun wildly around me as I watched my mother lose her balance and crumble onto the floor.

And that’s where Ta found us when he walked in five minutes later. Me, bending over Ma on the floor, trying to coax her to get up and drink something. Trying to protect her from the unknown evil that had suddenly appeared and taken a seat in our ever so pleasant lives. Trying to deny that no matter what we said or did, our lives had just been irrevocably altered forever.

Q: My son is gifted, but he is not doing well in school. Is that normal? Doesn’t being gifted mean that he kind of automatically does well in school?

A: Raising a gifted child? You’re so lucky, right? Actually, sometimes it’s extra hard to raise a gifted child. Celi Trepanier, the author of Educating Your Gifted Child, created a checklist of things to know for people parenting or teaching gifted children. I’ve included what I feel are the top five issues that people should be aware of:

1. Gifted students do not always excel in school. While many gifted children are high achievers and excel in school, many gifted students

are bored, unchallenged, or dealing with co-existing learning disabilities. This means that even though gifted students are very bright, we cannot always expect them to succeed in school.

2. Gifted children often have emotional intensities. Along with higher than average intelligence, gifted children often have stronger than average emotions. They are often passionate and intense.

3. Gifted children can be extremely sensitive. That emotional intensity (#2) works hand-in-hand with extreme sensitivity. Children who are gifted can be very sensitive to sensory issues such as smells and sensations as well as negative comments

or criticism.

4. Gifted children can have learning disabilities. Students who are both gifted and have learning disabilities are often called “twice exceptional.” Children can have both above average intelligence and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder to Sensory Processing Disorder.

5. Gifted children can struggle socially. They are not always interested in the conversations or hobbies of their peers and will therefore stand apart from their peers. In addition, sometimes they excessively correct the people around them, leading to resentment and frustration.

Snacks — Which to Give Up?

It’s important to not only pay attention to what you eat, but also when you eat. In past years, experts have made numerous dietary recommendations, including eating three full meals a day, grazing throughout the day, eating a high-protein snack at night and following a low-fat diet. Despite changing recommendations, the number of overweight and obese individuals continues to climb.

According to the World Health Organization, the number of people who are obese nearly tripled from 1975 to 2016. In 2016, 39% of people 18 years and older were overweight. Unfortunately, in 2018 this health hazard affected 40 million children under the age of 5.

Obesity Action reports there's an estimated 93 million Americans who are obese, which increases their risk for problems with mobility and a higher rate of death. Of the 22 industrialized countries worldwide, the U.S. has the highest number of citizens who are obese.

This condition leads to high blood pressure, insulin resistance and high cholesterol and triglycerides. As body mass index rises so does the potential for developing Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. One counter records 751.4 million people worldwide who are obese.

Choose Breakfast, Not a Late-Night Snack

Researchers from Vanderbilt University were interested in determining whether the timing of meals has a bearing on how efficiently energy is burned. They tested the hypothesis

that a circadian rhythm regulated how food would be metabolized during the day as compared to at night.

To measure this, middle-aged and older participants stayed in a respiratory chamber in two separate 56-hour interventional sessions.

During each session they were offered three daily meals. In one session they were given breakfast, lunch and dinner and in the other they were given lunch, dinner and a late-night snack.

During each session the participants received the same amount of food and used the same amount of energy. At night, their respiratory exchange rates were measured. This unexpectedly revealed a difference related to the timing of meals without any relationship to physical activity or core body temperature.

It appeared that the timing of their meals had an influence on lipid oxidation (LO). Those eating a late evening snack experienced lower fat burning during the night as opposed to those who ate breakfast without a late-night snack. The amount of time the participants fasted between the last meal of the day and the first meal the next day was the same for both sessions. The researchers concluded:

“The timing of meals during the day/night cycle therefore affects the extent to which ingested food is used versus stored. This study has important implications for eating habits, suggesting that a daily fast between the evening meal and breakfast will optimize weight management.”

Ultimately, this means that despite the number of calories eaten and calories burned being the same in both groups, those who ate at night would theoretically gain more weight than those who ate breakfast.

Weight Loss Alone Doesn’t Fix Health Problems

There are several factors that contribute to weight loss, such as sleep habits, the gut microbiome, what you eat and when you eat it. You might think that if you're able to stay lean then you're healthy, but weight loss alone is not a path to optimal health.

While you might look healthy on the outside, you could have some of the same health challenges as those who are overweight or obese. “Skinny fat” is a term used to describe individuals who may look thin on the outside but are metabolically fat due to a poor diet, unhealthy habits and lack of sleep.

Being overweight is a known risk factor for diabetes, yet researchers are finding that people with Type 2 diabetes who are at a normal weight have a higher mortality risk than those who are overweight or obese. This is known as the “obesity paradox” and it is being found in other chronic diseases as well.

Some experts report that as many as 25% of those who are within a normal weight range have prediabetes. This may be the result of a focus on getting thin instead of being healthy. In other words, paying attention to what's on the scale as opposed to getting quality sleep, reducing stress and eating a balanced diet may be leading to poor outcomes.

Researchers have been writing about metabolically obese normal-weight (MONW) individuals since as early as 1978. More recently, researchers have found that Type 2 diabetes in Asia is more frequently diagnosed in those who are not obese.

In a 2017 study, researchers compared insulin sensitivity, insulin

secretion, intra-abdominal, muscle and liver fat, and fasting and postprandial glucose and insulin concentrations in two groups. MONW individuals and a control group of healthy persons were matched for age, total body fat and gender.

Compared to controls, MONW participants had nearly two times more visceral fat and four times more liver fat. While hemoglobin A1c concentrations were similar between the groups, the glucose and insulin concentrations after eating were higher in the MONW group than in the control subjects.

This led researchers to conclude that those with an MONW body type have a higher accumulation of fat in the intra-abdominal and liver areas and increasing insulin resistance with a greater insulin response to compensate for the resistance. This demonstrates that the total picture of health is related to more than just weight.

Fasting Is a Powerful Tool

Intermittent fasting is a powerful approach to facilitate better eating habits and weight loss and to reduce your risk of chronic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Intermittent fasting doesn’t have to be difficult and it can be started gradually to help increase your potential for success. Basically, it is a cycle of eating and fasting that attempts to mimic the eating habits of our ancestors who did not have access to food 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This helps restore your body to a more natural state.

Eating throughout the day — the opposite of intermittent fasting —

means your body adapts to burning glucose as a primary fuel, which downregulates enzymes used to burn and store fat. Unfortunately, you then become progressively more insulin resistant and efforts to lose weight can be ineffective.

It is important to remember that intermittent fasting does not have to be a form of calorie restriction. In other words, the practice should make you feel good, not weak and lethargic. As your body begins to burn fat as its primary fuel, sugar cravings begin to subside and you feel full for a longer period of time.

However, it is not advisable to use intermittent fasting if your daily intake is filled with processed foods. In other words, this practice is not a cure-all for poor health and excess weight when your diet is filled with non-nutritive foods.

There are several health benefits you may experience by practicing intermittent fasting, including the reduction of insulin resistance, the promotion of leptin sensitivity, the lowering of triglycerides and the prevention or reversing of Type 2 diabetes.

Eating Keto Builds a Foundation for Cellular Health

The practice of nutritional ketosis is focused on eating high amounts of healthy fats. Aim for 70% to 85% of your total calories from healthy fat and 1 gram of protein for every kilogram

of lean body mass. Focus on keeping your net carbohydrates at no more than 4% to 10% of your daily calories.

The variation in net carbs considers energy requirements that are different from person to person, depending on physical activity. There is no set amount of fat you can eat but you need to limit carbohydrates and protein for a standard ketogenic diet.

Following a ketogenic diet often increases your level of energy and helps you lose and maintain weight loss. Far greater than weight loss, it also helps support your mitochondrial health and reduces inflammation.

This may play a role in reducing chronic and neuropathic pain. Many aging factors are impacted by lowgrade inflammation, so a ketogenic diet may help reduce your risk of premature aging and chronic diseases. The diet also helps reduce insulin resistance, which is associated with heart disease, cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer's disease.

It has a positive effect on your immune system. A team from the Yale School of Medicine tested the theory that ketosis could protect against influenza. They found that infected mice that ate a keto diet were less likely to die from the virus than mice who were fed a standard diet.

Please note that while at least one of the study’s authors told news media that getting vaccinated against influenza is the optimal thing to do, there are other, better ways of fighting flu that I describe in "Will Eating Keto Help Prevent Flu?"

Fasting With Cyclical Nutritional Ketosis for Optimal Health

Using a cyclical approach to a ketogenic nutrition plan will help increase the health benefits and allow you greater flexibility in your meal planning. There are three things you need to do to follow this plan.

1. Restrict net carbohydrates (total carbs minus fiber) to 20 to 50 grams per day

2. Consume 50% to 85% of your daily calories from healthy fat

3. Limit protein to one-half gram of protein per pound of lean body mass

It is important to maintain these ratios until your body is burning fat for fuel. Use keto testing strips to confirm you are in ketosis and keep in mind it may take a couple of weeks to a few months until your body is effectively burning fat. Once you're in ketosis and this starts happening, begin cycling in and out by eating a higher number of net carbs once or twice a week.

On your high-carb days, triple the amount of net carbs to maximize the biological benefit of cellular regeneration and renewal. However, you are cautioned to choose healthy alternatives such as digestive-resistant starches. Forgo the potato chips and bagels.

Fasting is a powerful lifestyle tool to combat obesity and insulin resistance. When you combine the power of fasting and the energy of eating keto it creates a strong foundation for optimal health.

With Purim just around the corner, there’s lots of talk and fantasizing about dressing up… Here, basic cookies get dressed up, taking the taste and presentation to the next level. They’re the perfect bite for mishloach manos or for any special occasion.

GITTY NEUMAN

PEANUT BLISS COOKIES

¾ cup light brown sugar, packed

½ cup sugar

½ cup oil

½ cup creamy peanut butter

2 eggs

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp vanilla extract

¼ tsp salt

2 cups flour

FOR DECORATING:

1-2 bars dairy chocolate

Paskesz Solos, sliced

Roasted, salted peanuts, coarsely crushed

Dark chocolate, for drizzling

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 350° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. In a large mixing bowl, combine all cookie ingredients except flour and whisk until light and fluffy. Add the flour and mix well.

3. Form balls using a standard sized ice cream scoop. Place on lined baking sheet and bake 10-12 minutes, until cookies are lightly golden and the tops are cracked.

If you make the cookies smaller, bake them only 10 minutes.

DECORATE THE COOKIES:

1. Melt the chocolate in a small pot (for easier dipping) over very low heat or in a double boiler.

2. Slice solo chocolates in half and then slice off the rounded edges (so the cookies will not be too bulky too stack) and reserve for a different use.

3. Once the cookies have cooled, dip them about 1/3 way in chocolate and place back in the parchment lined pan.

4. Immediately arrange sliced solos over the chocolate and sprinkle with peanuts.

5. Place in the freezer for a few minutes so the chocolate sets.

6. Melt dark chocolate and drizzle over the cookies.

Yields: approximately 15 large cookies

CHOCOLATE MINT COOKIES

COOKIES:

1 cup light brown sugar

½ cup sugar

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

2 ¼ cups flour

½ cup cocoa

FOR DECORATING:

Chocolate mint thins

Peppermint candies, finely crushed

Dark chocolate, for drizzling

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. In a large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients except the flour and cocoa and whisk until light and fluffy. Add flour and cocoa and mix well until the dough comes together.

3. Use a small ice cream scoop to form balls and place on the lined baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes.

4. Immediately after removing the cookies from the oven, place a mint thin in the center of each cookie and gently press it into the cookie.

5. After about 3 minutes, mint thins will appear wet. Sprinkle with crushed peppermint candies.

6. Place in the freezer so the chocolate dries.

7. Melt dark chocolate and drizzle over the cookies. Sprinkle with some additional crushed peppermint candies.

Note: Peppermint candies should first be coarsely chopped by placing in a Ziploc bag and banging with a mug or a can. Transfer to a food processor or mini chopper and blend until fine with very small pieces remaining.

Yields: about 40 cookies

This story happened at the start of this winter, 5783.

Chaim* was looking for a job. He had just completed a course which gave him the tools to work in the insurance field. He was competent and confident. But as he began his search, he realized that things were not as simple. Finding a position that was worth its pay, used his skills, and offered a suitable workplace was harder than he had thought. He scanned the classifieds, reached out to contacts, and really tried.

Finally, he came across an ad. The job description seemed to suit him well. With a tefillah on his lips, he submitted his resume. Lo and behold, the company got back to him and called him down for an interview.

It was a frum, all-men office. The atmosphere seemed nice and the conditions were really great. Chaim could already envision himself working in this place. He sat down to negotiate the details with his potential boss, who was frum, but belonged to a different community than Chaim.

“These are the job details,” the boss said, delineating Chaim’s future responsibilities. The pay he offered was decent, with room for potential growth.

Chaim was just about ready to sign on the contract, when he remembered one important question.

“What kind of filters do your computers have?”

“Of course,” the boss replied. “I am very careful about that,” and he named the filter company he worked with.

Chaim was not satisfied. The ke hillah he belonged to promoted a particular filter, under their supervi sion. “Perhaps we can work things out,” he said. “I must have the filter backed by my kehillah.”

The boss looked at Chaim. He was surprised. Why, his filters were on a decent standard! He seriously valued a pure office, following the guide lines of the rabbanim. What differ ence did it make?

But Chaim was stubborn. There was no way he could work on a com puter that had a different filter. Al though the boss couldn’t relate, he agreed to change the filter on Chaim’s computer. It would take some time. Chaim said he would re turn to sign the contract once that was done.

And so, Chaim left the office, still unemployed. With a lump in his throat but joy in his heart, he made his way home. It was the pure sensation of doing what was right. He would have to wait another bit before he would see a paycheck, if all went well.

The story really ends here. He felt a moment of strength, and that’s what counts.

But, it didn’t take long for Chaim to realize how lucky he was that he had the strength of character to follow his rav, to the T.

A few weeks later, the insurance company came under investigation for illicit activity, and all the employees were subject to a complex probe. The case came at a high cost for everyone involved. Chaim was spared the aggravation, still sitting at home and waiting…

An unaffiliated young Jewish man was raised around the corner from Yeshivas Chaim Berlin and Glatt Mart. He lived surrounded by tens of thousands of Frum Jews but never heard of Shabbos or Kosher. After attending public school and college, he was on the verge of intermarriage. That all changed when he entered BJX six years ago. Now, this young man is strictly kosher, Shabbos observant and just this week got engaged to a wonderful Torah observant young lady. Mazel Tov! This is precisely what BJX is about - saving Neshamos and building generations.

Not a single student in the photograph, all Jews from our neighborhood, was raised Frum. Each and everyone could have easily, chas v'shalom, assimilated; their Neshamos destroyed forever. Do you fathom how many Neshamos and Jewish Kinderlach would have been lost from Klal Yisroel? Instead, Chasdei Hashem, they are learning Torah. There are thousands of Jewish children that attend local public schools right in our neighborhood.

Our community is blessed with vibrant Mosdos HaTorah and Yeshivos as well as different organizations such as Hatzalah and Shomrim that keep us safe, protect us from harm and save lives in danger. But there is only one community organization that has spiritual oxygen tanks and defibrillators to revive those whose Neshamos are in peril, mamash saving Neshamos.

BJX (Brooklyn Jewish Xperience) is that organization.

BJX has also changed countless lives from the Frum community, ensuring that people who are raised frum stay frum. Our inreach programs have returned Yiddishkeit to young adults that have fallen through the cracks and have deepened the typical Yid's appreciation and love for Torah and Mitzvos.

Fifteen years ago on Purim night a mini-revolution happened. A group of very special םיתב ילעב sponsored bochurim and kollel yungerlite from Yeshiva Torah Temimah to sit and learn two hours םיפוצר on Purim night. The bochurim earned money for their own הקדצ, instead of walking the streets collecting. The bais hamedrash boomed with הרות לוק and this truly was the ultimate in ולביקו ומיק of the הרותה תחמש.

R’ Avraham Yitzchok Glick, the Talchever Ruv, wrote many answers to questions he got in learning. He wanted to print a Sefer of all his questions and answers, but had no money for it.

One day, the owner of the printing store came to him. He said, “Someone, who wants to remain anonymous, gave me all the money needed to print and bind your Sefer.”

The Ruv was very excited and went ahead to print the Sefer “Yad Yitchock.”

Years later, it was revealed that the one who anonymously donated money to have the Sefer printed, was none other than his wife, the Rebbetzin. She sold all her jewelry to have her Husband’s Sefer available for others to learn from.
