Hearing the entire, wacky story from Martin, Hinda chooses to focus now on trying to track down where Uncle Michoel could be. She calls Shimon Weisskopf, but doesn't get any more information from him than Martin had received.

Finally leaving Dov and Hinda's house, Simi actually gives Hinda a compliment.

A nurse offers to buy kosher food for Michoel, and mentions that there's another Jewish person in the place who also keeps kosher.

CHAPTER FORTY F IVE

In the morning, Michoel felt much stronger than he had in the past few days. Almost all the products that Rob, the male nurse, had bought him last night bore familiar American hechsherim, and that confirmed his conclusions regarding which country he was in. The good meal was having the right effect, baruch Hashem. He washed his hands and stood up to daven, happy to see that he was able to remember most of the davening by heart. He felt bad that he hadn’t remembered to put on tefillin for a few days—and that he had no idea where they were. But he would demand from the staff again to get his belongings. And if they were not here—maybe he really had come here following a serious trauma—he would ask them to get a hold of tefillin for him somehow. Maybe from the other guy who kept kosher.

He passed the nurses’ station and went down to the director’s room. The door was locked again, and this

time, no knocking or turning the handle got it to open. He studied the door, from the floor to the top of the doorpost, and went back up to the ward. This time he stopped at the nurses’ station.

“Yes, sir?” a dark-skinned nurse asked sweetly.

“I’d like to speak to the people in charge here,” he said. “Where is Skulholt now?”

“Do you mean the director or the CEO?”

“There are two Skulholts?” he asked. Then he remembered the inscription on the façade of the building. “Oh, I think his name might be Gilbert? I saw that name on the sign outside.”

“That’s their father,” someone behind him said, and Michoel was glad to discover that it was Rob, the sympathetic, bespectacled nurse. “And he has two sons: Edmund is the CEO, and Jerry is the doctor.”

“Oh, only one of them is a doctor?”

“Yes. But they both have pharmacist’s degrees.”

“I want one of them. Actually, I’d be happy to speak to both, but for now, I’ll do with whichever one is available first.”

The dark-skinned nurse chuckled. So did Rob. “I’ll check,” he promised. “In any case, I think that the doctor included a conversation with you on his schedule, so I believe it will happen at one point today.”

“Okay,” Michoel said. “So maybe until that happens, I can speak to you? I get the impression that the staff here is not very interested in giving me information. Not about this place and not about my condition…”

“I can certainly give you information about the place.

Regarding your condition, only the doctor can do that.”

“Excellent,” Michoel said. He had no idea how much he sounded like his regular self. He folded his arms and leaned on the desk. “Let’s start with what you can tell me. What is this place?”

“An alternative healing medical center.”

Michoel slowly repeated the words, letting them roll around on his tongue. “What does alternative healing include?” he asked, after a moment.

“Medications that Skulholt, the father, has produced, and whose recipes he taught to his sons; psychological and psychotherapeutic therapies; and, mostly, restraint.”

“Restraint! From what?” Michoel remembered the young man and the phone. “From phones? Mirrors?”

“Nice grasp,” Rob complimented him. “From cameras and mirrors, to put it more precisely.”

“But what’s bad about them?”

“I’ll leave that explanation to our doctor. One thing I promise you, though: you won’t leave the conversation with him without clear answers.” He smiled again, lowering his glasses and rubbing the lenses with the edge of his sleeve. “Now I need to get on with my work, okay?”

“Fine,” Michoel said. Then he remembered something. “But listen a minute—I have something important to discuss with you before you go. Do you have any idea where my belongings are? There is something in my bag that I need urgently, even before the sun sets.”

“You’ll have to ask the doctor about that,” Rob said. He began to walk away. “I think that patients’ personal belongings are also recorded in their files. I wasn’t here the week you arrived, but if I understood correctly, you came here unconscious, in serious condition with a head trauma, without any belongings or identification.” ***

This private investigator knew nothing about Mike's life. At first he'd said a cult, then he'd said that there was a more remote possibility that was worth looking into—an eating-disorder clinic. He'd spoken to three friends of Mike, and they'd said something about this.

But Mommy and Daddy did not know what he was talking about, because Mike, as far as Becky could see, did not have any eating disorders. He usually finished all his food, and even took doubles; he also noshed plenty between meals.

Besides, as Mommy had asked, who had persuaded Mike to be hospitalized? Who wants to be hospitalized just to be force-fed?

Later, though, Mommy had said quietly that she had noticed some strange things about Mike recently, and when she thought about it, they were all connected to food and weight. He had been a bit pale, and had gotten thinner, but she hadn’t noticed that he was eating differently. And besides, only girls suffered eating disorders, right?

The investigator had laughed and said that most eatingdisorder sufferers were girls, yes, but not all. And that he did want to look into this option.

In the end, he'd gone, and left Mommy and Daddy with some questions for them to think about. He said he’d call tomorrow to hear their answers, so he could decide where to start searching. Mommy and Daddy had argued a bit, which Becky could never stand. Daddy had said that it was the ridiculous cult, Mom had said it was the eating-disorder hospital, and Becky had decided to go into her room and look up in the Encyclopedia Britannica what types of eating disorders there are, and which made the most sense for Mike to be suffering from. If that was really what was wrong with him. ***

Hinda walked home from the grocery, wondering what they were supposed to do with Martin today, and if he was expecting them to keep him busy. Yesterday, she and Dov had discussed the issue until 2:30 in the morning, and they'd agreed on a general plan. They would not go to the police for now, but they might do so if they didn't succeed in tracking Michoel down soon.

Today she’d go to Michoel’s house to try to figure out what had happened there. It was true that Martin had been living there for weeks, and claimed he’d checked the house from basement to attic, and that there wasn’t a clue about such a long disappearance. But she knew Michoel better, and she might find something, b’ezras Hashem.

Dov and Martin showed up together after Shacharis. Hinda did not ask if Martin had joined him in shul or if they had just met on the stairs. Instead she sat the boy down at the table, next to her husband, and served the two breakfast.

“I slept very well,” Martin said, after eating in silence for a few moments. “My grandmother once said that a clean conscience is the most comfortable pillow in the world. Maybe my conscience cannot be entirely clean, because I still withheld this information about your uncle not being in the house all this time, but…”

“But you brought us more information,” Hinda said quietly from her place near the sink. "And we appreciate

“What are your plans for now, Martin?” Dov asked.

“I thought about it a lot this morning.” The youth smeared a thick layer of butter on a slice of bread, and then spooned some eggs on top. “And that’s what I was starting to tell you now. If they are going to deport me anyway, I don’t have to wait for them to do it with all the bells and sirens and media and I-don’t-know-what else. I have a visa to go to America. I thought I could go meet with Shimon Weisskopf and try to find Michoel Perl myself.” His eyes were lowered.

“It’s a nice idea,” Dov said thoughtfully. “The question is if you have where to start. We also spoke to Weisskopf, but he really has no further information that can be helpful.”

“I still think that when you meet someone face to face, for an official meeting, you can get to many more details than when you're speaking with him on the phone,” Martin said confidently. “If he can tell me what Perl planned to do in America, and what he usually did on trips of this kind, it would be very helpful.”

“Sounds interesting.”

“It would also help me if you spoke to Monsenego from Mexico, and tried to find out which flight Michoel Perl was supposed to take to go to America from there. This way, we can check if he flew or not.”

“Your ideas are good ones,” Dov said in his not-verypolished English. His wife spoke a much better English than he did, yet he was still able to understand all that Martin was saying. “Sounds like you were a detective trainee at some point or something!”

“Almost.” Martin suppressed a smile of his own. “I was actually involved in collecting …

“Here in Israel? During your computer studies?”

“No, in Canada.”

“What did you learn?”

Surveillance. Collecting information about the people who worked with John Wilke—Brian’s greatest enemy. Collecting details about random people, though to this day, he had no idea what the group even wanted from them. “Information systems, things like that. We were also involved in programs about people's personal information.”

“Sounds like something almost on a government level.”

“Yes,” Martin murmured into his coffee cup.

“How old are you, Martin?”

“Eighteen.”

“Then you were very young when you learned this in

Canada.”

Martin put down his empty cup. “It was a year ago.”

“You give the impression of being a gifted young man.”

“I don’t know if I’m gifted, but I’m definitely talented.” He ran his right hand through his too-long hair. “And I’d love if you would give me the chance to fix some of the damage I’ve done, and let me go out to search for Michoel Perl.”

“Let's talk about this later, at around lunchtime, Martin, alright?” Dov stood up and took his suit jacket off the hook near the kitchen door. Then he added, “And if I want to put things on the table openly, one of our main considerations here is financial.”

Near the sink, Hinda gave a cough. He glanced at her fleetingly and continued, “I’m not sure that we have spare money to invest in this adventure. As I said, you seem like a talented young man, but as long as I’m not convinced enough that you'd have a serious chance of tracking down Michoel, I may prefer to use the money toward a private investigator, further down the line—if it comes to that.”

“Of course, there’s nothing personal here,” Hinda added from where she was standing. “You seem like an honest person and all. But this is something we need to think about.”

“I didn’t mean that you should pay for it,” Martin shot back. “My grandmother’s inheritance is enough for me to travel on my own dime.”

“Maybe it would be a good idea for you to allow the authorities to deport you,” Dov said with a laugh. “Let them pay the ticket, eh?”

“For all I know, they might put me on a plane, and then force me to pay the ticket anyway.” Martin wasn’t laughing. “But I told you, I don’t want you to pay me anything for now. The expenses are on me. If I find your uncle, we’ll talk then, okay?”

Dov bit his lips for a long moment, and then another one. “You’re very generous, young man,” he said. “But your grandmother’s inheritance is meant to serve you in the future, not for you to waste on—sorry, I keep using this word; please don’t get offended—on this adventure, when the outcome is not at all certain.”

“I can travel without asking you, too, you know,” the boy replied with a faint smile.

“Let's think about it, okay?” Dov put a hand on Martin’s shoulder. “If you insist on going, I do want to talk about the possibility of you finding him, and then we’ll happily pay you part of the expenses.”

The most common way of treating thrush would be via medication to kill the bacterial overgrowth. But you asked for some natural and preventative measures. Here are some ideas:

1) Reduce sugar, yeast, dairy products, and artificial sweeteners. Really heal your gut and don’t allow it to become a breeding ground for the bugs we do not need.

2) Take herbal supplements and vitamins, such as grapefruit seed extract, garlic, B vitamins, and zinc.

3) Some mothers find it helpful to take a probiotic, such as lactobacillus acidophilus. Buy this in your local health store.

4) Frequent hand washing.

5) Wash your towels and laundry on high heat to kill all yeasts.

6) Have a separate towel for each person in the family, or at least for you and your baby.

7) Wear cotton and keep yourself dry all the time.

8) Wash and sterilize pacifiers, bottles, and pump parts frequently.

9) Replace toothbrushes, toiletries, and cosmetics since the yeast can be transmitted via oral products.

If there is no improvement following prescription medications and self-care measures, then it may be worth considering if the original diagnosis of thrush is correct.

Q: What do “alternative assessments” mean?

A: When we want to know what students know, we give them a test or a quiz. These forms of testing are great ways to know what students know, but they don’t always reflect the application of the skills they are learning every day. In other words, tests and quizzes are an essential part of the learning process, but should not be the only forms of assessment that teachers use to evaluate children’s knowledge. Forms of testing that are not actual “tests” are called alternative assessments in the world of education. Below, I have outlined a few possibilities for alternative assessments in elementary

through high school:

Elementary School:

• Bookmark. A typical test to know what a student knows about a book or short story would consist of questions or a book report. Instead, teachers can tell students that they need to create a bookmark with a synopsis on one side and key vocabulary on the other. This bookmark can then be transferred to the next book for use. At the end of the year, the student can also compile a scrapbook of all the bookmarks created for the reading that year. This not only tests the students’ knowledge of the contents of the book, but also helps them see their progression

as the year continues.

• Recipe. For math and science, a great alternative assessment is to give the students a recipe and ingredients for cookies or any other delicious baked good. Then, give the students instructions for halving or doubling. Depending on the level of the student, fractions can be involved. If possible, the school can also provide measuring cups and spoons so that students can work to actually measure out the contents of each ingredient. Multiplication, division, and measurement are all tested in this alternative assessment.

• Time line. For social studies teachers assigning a different time period in

history to different students in order to create a timeline can be an effective testing measure. The time lines would require students to understand the sequence of historical events and additionally force them to think about cause and effect.

High School:

• Literature circles. Students in high school can read books in groups and discuss those books with their peers. In order to ensure that students are held accountable for their reading and discussions, teachers can audio-record these conversations and evaluate them on depth of conversation and sophistication. This alternative assessment adds verbal presentation into an English classroom that might otherwise only include written assessments.

• At-home labs. Science classes don’t always have the material, space, or time for lab work, but there are great labs that teachers can assign to students to be completed at home. Many of these labs require everyday household items and regular kitchen equipment. With these labs (and the lab reports students write up after), students can demonstrate their knowledge of both math and chemistry in addition to an in-class written test.

• Director’s notebooks. When reading plays (especially ones written a long time ago), students are often confounded by the language. A great way to test students’ knowledge, while also engaging and motivating them, is to have them create “director’s notebooks.” In these director’s notebooks, they would annotate the scripts

with difficult vocabulary, stage directions, and tone. Then, the students would perform the scene for the class, thereby demonstrating their knowledge of the subject at hand.

Alternative assessments are an extremely important part of understanding what students know beyond the scope of tests and quizzes. That said, tests and quizzes do hold an important place in the classroom. Children’s minds work in different ways and therefore different assessments are necessary to help teachers understand just what their students grasp and understand. An added bonus is that they can help boost children’s selfesteem if they don’t usually excel through traditional testing methods.









Lead Exposure Still Kills

Lead is one of three toxins shown to have the greatest negative impact on your life span. One of the reasons for this is because lead is chemically similar to calcium. By competing with calcium at the cellular level, lead can disrupt several bodily systems, including your cardiovascular and neurological systems.

Lead Is a Greater Risk Factor for Heart Disease Than Smoking

Research published in The Lancet Public Health in 2018 — which sought to quantify the contribution of environmental lead exposure to all-cause mortality and mortality from cardiovascular and ischemic heart disease specifically — concluded lead levels in adults are strongly correlated with a higher risk of death, especially from cardiovascular complications. As reported by the authors:

"We included 14,289 adults in our study. The geometric mean concentration of lead in blood was 2·71 μg/dL). 3,632 (20%) participants had a concentration of lead in blood of at least 5 μg/dL. During median follow-up of 19·3 years, 4,422 people died, 1,801 (38%) from cardiovascular disease and 988 (22%) from ischemic heart disease.

An increase in the concentration of lead in blood from 1·0 μg/ dL to 6·7 μg/dL, which represents the tenth to 90th percentiles, was associated with all-cause mortality (hazard ratio 1·37), cardiovascular disease mortality (1·70), and ischemic heart disease mortality (2·08).

The population attributable fraction of the concentration of lead in blood for all-cause mortality was 18·0%, which is equivalent to 412,000 deaths annually.

Respective fractions were 28·7% for cardiovascular disease mortality and 37·4% for ischemic heart disease mortality, which correspond to 256,000 deaths a year from cardiovascular disease and 185,000 deaths a year from ischemic heart disease."

Lead Has Multigenerational Impacts

When nearly 1 in 5 (18%) of all deaths and more than 1 in 4 (28.7%) of all cardiovascular deaths are related to lead toxicity, it would certainly make sense for doctors to check patients' lead

levels. Yet, that almost never happens. Failure to address lead not only risks the patient's life, but also that of their children and grandchildren, especially if it's a female patient.

Instead, patients with symptoms of heart disease are simply given a statin, which does absolutely nothing to address this toxic underlying cause. This is an egregious error, considering lead exposure has multigenerational impacts. This means failure to address lead not only risks the patient's life, but also that of their children and grandchildren, especially if it's a female patient. As reported by The Allegheny Front in 2016:

'What most people don't realize is that you're also expressing the germ line cells, and that can affect the grandchildren, and even potentially beyond that.'

Ruden's study looked at blood lead levels in 35 mothers and their babies in Detroit. They observed a correlation between elevated blood lead levels in the mothers and changes in DNA.

'If the mothers had high blood lead levels when they were born, then their grandchildren have changes in their DNA,' he says. 'And the changes in the DNA we were looking at weren't permanent changes. They're what we call epigenetic mutations' …

Health Risks Associated With Lead Exposure

There is no known safe exposure to lead, and exposure — aside from heart disease — has been linked to an increased risk of headaches, seizures, hearing and vision impairment, high blood pressure, nerve disorders, muscle and joint pain, brain damage, reduced IQ and learning difficulties.

Symptoms of chronic exposure or lead poisoning usually don't appear until years later, but sudden high exposure to lead has been known to induce insanity rather rapidly.

All of these neurological impacts can be explained by the fact that, in

your brain, lead disrupts neurons that use calcium to transmit information. The presence of lead will cause some neurons to fire more and decrease the signals in others. Other research has demonstrated that lead:

Generates superoxide and hydrogen peroxide, which in turn reacts with nitric oxide and produces peroxynitrites

Stimulate vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation and phenotypic transformation

Disturbs vascular smooth muscle calcium signaling

Modifies vascular response to vasoactive antagonists

Raises plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 production

Suppresses proteoglycan production

Causes endothelial injury

Impedes endothelial repair

Inhibits angiogenesis

Promotes inflammation

Corruption Has Allowed Environmental Lead to Proliferate

Leaded gasoline was for decades a primary source of lead exposure in the general population. The U.S. introduced leaded gas in 1923, to make the fuel more efficient and reduce engine knocking. This was done despite the well-recognized hazards of lead exposure, and despite the fact that 10% alcohol had been found to achieve the same goals, all while having the added benefit of clean combustion, which eliminated soot emissions.

The only reason lead was selected was because manufacturing the lead additive, tetra-ethyl lead, would allow them to make greater profits. As explained in a study, by adding a percentage of alcohol to the gasoline, the oil industry stood to lose up to 20% of its petroleum sales, depending on how much alcohol was added. On the other hand, by adding lead to gasoline, the oil industry had a product it could

control in its entirety, and that was their aim.

The auto and chemical industries used the same techniques back then as they do now; promoting, defending, manipulating government officials, and molding public opinion to profit from a toxic product, all while knowing exactly the kind of harm it causes.

Manipulated science, industry propaganda and political corruption allowed lead to remain in gasoline for 80 years, until Clair Patterson, Ph.D., was finally successful in getting it removed. Patterson is an unsung public health hero of the 20th century that most people have never heard of. The featured video is a 30-minute summary of the evolution of leaded gas and, ultimately, its removal.

Patterson first began his health crusade to eliminate environmental lead in 1965, with the publication of his book, "Contaminated and Natural Lead Environments of Man." It would be 11 years before he finally succeeded, after fighting against the massive lobbying power of the oil and auto industries.

Then, as now, these industries used their influence to launch a massive discrediting campaign against him and his research. In 1971, he was excluded from a National Research Council (NRC) panel on atmospheric lead contamination, even though he was the world expert on the subject at that time.

Despite these massive discrediting efforts, he doggedly pursued the elimination of lead from gasoline, which finally occurred in 1986. Thanks to Patterson's persistence, blood lead levels in Americans dropped by 80% by the late 1990s.

How to Get Lead Out of Your Body

Eliminating lead can be a long and arduous journey that needs to be done very carefully to avoid creating more harm in the process. A scientific review14 published in 2016 highlighted

the benefits of chelation therapy using edetate disodium (EDTA).

According to that paper, EDTA chelation effectively lowered the risk for future cardiovascular events, with a number needed to treat (NNT) of 12 to prevent one cardiovascular event over five years. Mainstream health care, however, still maintains that EDTA chelation therapy is a form of quackery that has no discernible benefit.

EDTA does have its risks, however, as it draws out not only lead but also important minerals. (This is part of why chelation must be done with a qualified doctor who can monitor your nutritional status and recommend appropriate supplementation.)

A far safer and more readily available alternative is N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), a precursor to glutathione, which your body requires for efficient detoxification. A study from 2008 found NAC protected against leadinduced genotoxicity in human liver cancer cells (HepG2 cells). As noted in that paper:

"[NAC] has an impressive list of protective effects including: antioxidant activity, decrease of the biologically effective dose of carcinogens, anti-inflammatory activity, immunological effects, inhibition of progression to malignancy and metastasis, and protection from the adverse effects of chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic agents …

[We] hypothesized that the antioxidant, n-acetyl-l-cysteine attenuates oxidative stress and genotoxicity, and thereby provides cellular protection against lead toxicity

[The] addition of NAC in vitro showed a significant reduction (p < 0.05) in the comet tail length, percentage of DNA cleavage, comet tail moment, as well as comet tail arm respectively in cells

co-treated with NAC and lead nitrate.

Findings from these studies demonstrated that NAC inhibits malondialdehyde (MDA) production and genotoxicity in lead nitrate-treated HepG2cells in a dose-dependent manner."

Shortly after it was discovered that NAC also provides several benefits in the treatment of COVID-19, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration started cracking down on NAC, claiming it's excluded from the definition of a dietary supplement. As a result of the FDA's bogus crackdown on this supplement, which has been sold as such for 57 years, Amazon quit selling it. Fortunately, it's still available in many other places.

Sauna bathing can also be a useful strategy to remove nearly every toxin from your body including lead. In the U.S. this means either a far or near infrared sauna. My personal preference, as I have previously discussed, is a near IR sauna as it will also help with photobiomodulation that far IR sauna cannot do. I personally use it three times a week. Using it every day is not a good strategy. Every other day is ideal.

Common Sources of Lead Exposure

Of course, successfully eliminating lead from your body also requires you to stop putting more in. Today, gasoline exhaust is not a source of lead. Instead, primary sources include:

· Drinking water

· Cigarette smoke

· Lead paint in older homes

· Cheaply made household objects and children's toys and apparel — As just one example, Disney character clothing was recalled in late November

2022 due to high levels of lead in the textile ink. More than 80,000 pieces of clothing were recalled

Strategies to Avoid Lead Poisoning

To protect yourself and your family against lead exposure, consider the following recommendations:

· If your home was built before 1978, get it inspected to determine whether it has any lead paint — Lead paint removal must be done by a certified professional to ensure safety, as the dust is highly toxic. For more information on this, see the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's "Lead-Based Paint Resources" page.

· Get your water tested for lead — Millions of older water service lines across the U.S. are made from lead and could be carrying contaminated water into your home on a daily basis. Your safest and most economical choice to get lead out of your water supply is to use a high-quality filter rated for lead removal.

· Be mindful that certain household objects may contain lead — For information about lead-containing products and recalls, see the Consumer Products Safety Commission's website.

· Get your child tested for lead — Ideally, all children should be tested at ages 1 and 2, and again at ages 3 and 4 if you live in an older home. It's also recommended to test your child's level whenever there's concern about exposure. Also get yourself tested for lead, especially if your doctor suspects you have heart disease. A level of 3.5 mcg/dL or higher is considered dangerous.

· Use filtered cold water for drinking or cooking. Never cook or mix infant formula using unfiltered hot water from the tap.

Plateful ofPasta

Pasta is so versatile and is appropriate for so many occasions. However you choose to relish it, here are two versions you are sure to enjoy.

GITTY NEUMAN

1 (16 oz) pack penne

2 Tbsp oil, for sautéing

3 peppers, cut into strips

12 oz frozen broccoli, cut into bite sized pieces

10 oz fresh mushrooms, peeled and sliced or 1 (15 oz) can sliced mushrooms

2 Tbsp soy sauce

1 tsp salt

½ tsp basil

½ tsp parsley flakes

¼ tsp oregano

¼ tsp black pepper

8 oz shredded cheese

DIRECTIONS:

1. Cook and drain pasta.

2. In the same pot, heat oil and saute mushrooms until golden, about 5 minutes. Add peppers and broccoli and saute an additional 10 minutes, until tender but crisp.

3. Add soy sauce and spices to the vegetable mixture.

4. Preheat oven to 350°.

5. Transfer vegetables to a 9x13 pan. Toss with pasta and shredded cheese. Cover and bake for 15 minutes, until cheese is melted.

CLASSIC FETTUCINI

8 oz fettucini

10 oz fresh mushrooms, peeled and sliced

6 Tbsp butter

4 Tbsp flour

3 cups milk

1 cup heavy cream

2 frozen garlic cubes or ½ tsp garlic powder

1 ½ tsp salt, or more to taste

1 ½ tsp parsley flakes

DIRECTIONS:

1. Cook fettucini according to package directions. Drain, but do not rinse.

2. In a large pot, melt butter and add mushrooms. Cover pot and cook over lowmedium heat for approximately 10 minutes. There should be some liquid in the pot. Add flour and mix well until fully incorporated into the butter mixture and texture is pasty.

3. Add ½ cup of milk at a time; stirring between each addition until mixture is smooth. Bring to a light boil and cook 5-10 minutes, maintaining low boil and stirring constantly, until thickened. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Toss with pasta.

Note: You can sub the heavy cream with (full fat) milk for a lighter version.

Reheat over low heat. You may need to add a bit of milk when reheating.

Is dairy good or bad for us?

The USDA, the United States Department of Agriculture, created the food pyramid. This department manages the meat and dairy industry of the nation. Relying on their reports and recommendations is tricky since they may have ulterior business motives. The overabundance of milk bottles in the food packages distributed during corona proved that the recommendations are agenda driven. In Canada, for example, the food guide lumps dairy together with other proteins. This development has gotten pushback from Canadian dairy farmers since they can sell more when dairy is recommended separately. In reality, we don’t need nearly as much dairy as recommended. What we do need is lots of nutrients from low calorie – nutrient dense foods. When we fill up on plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, then we can meet most of our nutrient requirements safely, while allowing ourselves dairy occasionally.

PERSONAL EGGPLANT PARMESAN

INGREDIENTS:

1 eggplant

oil (to saute)

pizza sauce – see recipe

pizza cheese

Note: Personal eggplant parmesan can be prepared in Betty Crocker.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Slice eggplant into ½” round slices.

Salt lightly and let stand 15 minutes.

Pat dry. Sautee in oil until soft, flipping once. Remove slices from pan. Layer 1 slice eggplant, sauce, cheese, 1 slice eggplant, sauce, cheese. Heat until cheese melts.

PIZZA SAUCE

8 oz tomato sauce

2 Tbsp oil

1 tsp oregano

1⁄2 tsp onion powder

1⁄2 tsp garlic powder pinch pepper

AN EPIC SIYUM

The Parsha, says, "Vayishma Yisro, Yisro heard." Based on what Yisro heard, he changed his entire life. Yisro was the world's most revered priest. He was the equivalent of a pastor of a mega church with thousands of adherents and disciples who had everything imaginable at his disposal; yachts, luxury cars, planes, and vacation homes.

The Zohar asks: What was so exceptional about Yisro? How come others didn't also leave their previous lives behind? After all, the Passuk says, "Shamu Amim Yirgazun." It wasn't just Yisro who heard. All the nations heard about the miracles that occurred and were utterly shaken.

The Zohar answers that, indeed, everyone heard. However, Yisro didn't merely hear; he listened! Everyone can hear but very few actually listen. Here's the story of another person who didn't just hear the truth but actually listened and acted:

Tatty is Back!

I should be embarrassed to share this story, but I feel that if anyone could gain from it, it will all be worth it.

One day, I came home after a long day of work. I was exhausted and I sank into the couch. My phone came out of my pocket a second later. I use my phone for work. But I also use it for play. Within minutes, I was deeply immersed in a most interesting clip my friend had shared and a funny joke from my brother. I laughed aloud to no one in particular and texted back.

I was so immersed in what I was doing, that I hardly noticed my daughter come over. Leah’la sat down near me and tried to talk. “Hello, Tatty!” No response.

“Tatty, you know what my teacher gave me?” she asked. No response.

“Tatty, I want to tell you something!”

I was getting annoyed. “Soon,” I grunted. But Leah’la did not want to hear that.

“Tatty! I want a drink!”

I looked around. Was anyone else home? Why did Leah’la have to bother me so much?

But Leah’la just wouldn’t stop nudging. I didn’t realize

that all she wanted was two minutes of my time. A bit of attention from her big Tatty. I couldn’t be bothered. The next time she opened her mouth, my hand instinctively flew to her face and gave her a stinging slap. Only when I heard Leah’la’s distraught sobbing did I realize what I had just done.

Did I really hit my child for no reason?!

She had done nothing to deserve the punishment. If anyone deserved a smacking, it was me – her absentee father!

The image of Leah’la’s tear-stained face haunted me to no end. I could not forgive myself. Things had to change.

It took strength. Lots of inner strength. But I resolved not to bring my phone into my home. The phone stays in the car when I come home from work. I cannot describe how much lighter I felt when I walked into the house that first day with an empty pocket. Suddenly, I knew I was a Tatty again.

PS – My kabbalah didn’t come easily, but after a few days, I started to get used to it. Life isn’t bad being disconnected from the world around and connecting to the inner world, the world that should be most important to us… It’s actually very, very good!

It had a phone number on it, that was a working number. They hope to meet in person with the 43 year old to return the bottle and letter.
