Shimon loved visiting his father’s grocery store. Almost every day after cheder, Shimon would stop by for a cookie. He reveled in the grown-up feeling he got from restocking the candies on the shelves and picking up fallen cereal boxes. And on some lucky days, if a Danish got smashed, he’d get to take it home to eat after supper. Even when his father was busy with a long line of customers, he’d always give Shimon a wink that told him he was more important than every other person in the store.

Then, one night in November, Shimon’s father got an urgent call: there was an electrical fire at the store. The firefighters were already there battling the flames, but it was too late. The grocery store burned down.

Shimon was devastated. He completely shut down: he barely ate, couldn’t sleep, and stopped inviting friends over. At school, Shimon would drift to sleep in middle of learning, sit listless and alone at recess, and pick at his lunch. “Don’t worry, we have insurance for the store,” Shimon’s parents told him. “No one was hurt, that’s the main thing.” But he couldn’t be comforted. Shimon’s rebbi urged his parents to take care of the issue right away, and they brought him to the Sipuk Mental Health Clinic for play therapy.

therapy: Exploring a child inner world in his natural language

“When we enter the child’s world through play,” says Mr. Chaim Winter, Director of Supervision at Sipuk and a play therapist for over 30 years, “we can understand them on their own level. And the magic is in that connection.”

When adults go to therapy, the goal is to foster a direct connection between the adult and the therapist. Through this connection, the therapist guides the adult to identify their struggles and find a path to wellbeing.

When a child goes to play therapy, connection is fostered through play, and that connection is then used to heal the child.

Trauma, anxiety, grief, and family dissolution are common scenarios that rupture the secure attachment a child previously had with his parents. The child’s subconscious mind wonders if his parents are still in tune with his needs. He acts out with unhealthy fears, negative actions, or withdrawal.

Through play, the child can express thoughts and feelings that are difficult for him to communicate verbally.

Such situations often spiral beyond a parent's control, and they realize they need the help of a qualified therapist. The therapist’s role is to help the child feel safe enough to explore these frightening feelings. In play therapy, the therapist establishes a strong rapport with the child and the child learns to trust him. Through play, the child can express thoughts and feelings that are difficult for him to communicate verbally. Once the therapist — and the parents — gain access to the child’s world, they can facilitate the child’s healing.

“The process looks simple,” says Mr. Yosef Chaim Berman, LCSW, a therapist at Sipuk. “But we’re trained to use simple words and actions to effect tremendous change. Using the insights we gain from the child’s play, we can foster growth and change.”

How it worked for Shimon

When Shimon’s parents brought him to Sipuk Mental Health Clinic, he was literally kicking and screaming. They had to carry him into the therapy room. His therapist, Mr. Winter, didn’t flinch. “Wow, there’s a lot of kicking and screaming today,” he calmly observed. After a few minutes, Shimon started looking around the room, taking in the wide variety of toys designed to ignite the imagination.

At the next session, Shimon asked Mr. Winter if he could play with the Playmobil. “Of course,” said Mr. Winter.

“All the toys in this room are here for you.”

Shimon looked around all the shelves and drawers.

“What’s this?”

“A sand tray.”

“Can I play with the mentchies?”

“You can play with everything.”

Shimon saw that Mr. Winter was serious. There was nothing he could do that would throw his therapist offkilter, not touching all the toys, nor even a full-blown tantrum.

One day, after several sessions of exploring, he worked up the courage to take the blocks and started building a grocery store in the sand tray.

He built the structure. Filled the shelves with food.

Walked the mentchie-customers down the aisles, filling up their wagons with groceries.

He found the magic that his father’s store had contained for him — and he recreated it, all by himself.

A year later, Shimon is flourishing at school and at home, secure in the knowledge that he could rewrite his story and face his deepest fears.

Somatic relational play therapy: Healing through your body

Traditional talk therapy has been around since the days of Freud. But recent research has taught us that it’s our body that stores trauma and stress. We can bypass the complicated depths of our minds and heal through our bodies. Somatic modalities barely touch on the mind and work directly with the heart and body. A child — and even an adult — usually experiences trauma as a lack of control over what’s happening to him.

In somatic relational play therapy, the therapist provides a safe place for the child to explore a gigantic collection of toys. Children can’t put words to their feelings — so they play them out. This is their way of expressing themselves. By creating scenes in the sand tray, building the events of their lives with blocks, or reenacting a scenario with dolls, they revisit their story and tell it the way they want it to happen.

Sometimes expressing feelings during therapy is enough to heal them. Often, the therapist will show the parents how to continue the process at home with therapeutic skills and specific methods of talking to the child. This way, the parent is empowered to continue the healing process between sessions.

Recap: Bruchi calls Esther Mindy to ask her about computer software, and Esther Mindy asks Bruchi for advice in dealing with Shana, the sixth-grader Mrs. Shainberger assigned to her. Esther Mindy hangs up feeling warmed at Bruchi’s gesture of calling her to build bridges.

Esther Mindy decides to take it further and call Raizy to schmooze, asking her about Avrumi’s favorite dishes.

Chapter 39

“Actually, Raizy sent me pictures of how she set it up and I copied,” Esther Mindy admitted as Avrumi complimented the food setup.

“You spoke to Raizy?” Avrumi asked, surprised.

“Mmhm,” Esther Mindy confirmed. “She has such good ideas. I love her style.”

Avrumi wasn’t sure he liked the idea of Esther Mindy conferring with his older sister about this kind of thing. But he didn’t say anything, just washed his hands and sat down.

And he didn’t bring up any difficult topics until supper was nearly over. Then he finally said it.

“My mother invited us for the Friday night seudah,” Avrumi threw out as Esther Mindy stood up to clear the supper dishes off the table.

Esther Mindy looked dismayed. “Is she really up to hosting again?” she asked, stalling for time.

“Well, I’m sure she wouldn’t mind if we offered to bring something, but you know my mother. She doesn’t shirk her obligations, and she feels like she’s supposed to be hosting the new couple every week. So even if she took off a week, as soon as she can physically do it she’s going to want to host us.”

Esther Mindy cringed inwardly at the obligations reference. It was a thinly veiled way of Avrumi telling her that as a Grossman, she couldn’t cop out and say she didn’t feel up to going to her mother-in-law for a Shabbos seudah. She had to do what was expected of her.

She got the message loud and clear.

“So can I tell her that we’ll come?” Avrumi asked, his tone making it clear that he planned to do so.

Esther Mindy was still silent. Avrumi fidgeted. He hated this whole situation with his wife and mother being at odds. Even more, he hated feeling like he disappointed

his mother, which was the feeling he kept on getting lately.

Esther Mindy stacked the dishes in the sink, not looking at Avrumi. Could she help it if the thought of spending another few hours in her mother-in-law’s company made her skin crawl? She couldn’t.

“We can’t stay away from my mother forever, anyway,” Avrumi said abruptly. “She’s my mother. Even if we stop going to her for Shabbos, there are chasunos. We have family stuff. You know, you may as well get over it.”

Esther Mindy’s face crumpled, and she looked at Avrumi, hurt. “So all of a sudden, this is my issue?”

Avrumi bit his lip.

“No, it’s not your issue, but it’s an issue. And we need to deal with it, not run away from it.”

“Fine, so we’ll go to your mother for Shabbos,” Esther Mindy said, modulating her tone to keep from saying the words louder than

was warranted. She could feel her stomach tying into a knot.

“Thanks,” Avrumi said, sounding less sincere than Esther Mindy would have liked. “And can you try this time, um, you know…”

“Not to get your mother upset?”

Esther Mindy asked bluntly. “I can try. But I’m not sure it’s going to help.” She swallowed.

Avrumi, seeing her expression, softened a bit. He remembered Raizy’ admonitions to him that this wasn’t about him, and that it wasn’t fair to put Esther Mindy in a box.

He thought about how much he enjoyed Esther Mindy’s spunk and wacky ideas, from his food preparation to the discussions on the most random topics they’d shared.

“Well, if you try, I’m sure it’s going to be great,” he said, feeling generous for reassuring his wife.

But Esther Mindy didn’t look reassured at all. In fact, it made her look even more upset. ***

Esther Mindy patted her sheitel into place, looking into the hallway mirror. Then she gave a cursory check of her outfit, jewelry, shoes and coat. Good to go, even to the Grossman house itself. She nodded to Avrumi, who was waiting by the door patiently for his wife to be ready.

“Great, let’s go,” he said, opening the door. The air was thick with both of their apprehensions, but none of them spoke about it, keeping the topics light and easy.

Even as she spoke, though, Esther Mindy was ruminating. About her mother-in-law, her husband, her place in the Grossman family. What would happen tonight if her mother-in-law provoked her with a comment that made Esther Mindy feel boxed in? Would she be able to remain quiet and keep the peace?

It seemed she would have to learn to do it. As her mother had pointed out, there were so many other areas of her life where she’d had to rein in her boundless creativity and uniqueness. The difference was that, while she’d always had her mother and to a large part her good friends, guiding her, now, in the Grossman arena, she was on her own.

Was her training good enough to stand up to a test like this?

“Good Shabbos!” Mr. Grossman greeted them, a lot more heartily than usual. He felt their tension immediately and tried to defuse it by being extra jovial.

Esther Mindy felt a jolt of anxiety so powerful she was nearly paralyzed as they walked through the front door, bringing back memories of the first time she’d ever been there. How would she ever handle a one-on-one conversation with her mother-in-law now, after all their past altercations?

Surprisingly enough, though, her worst fears weren’t realized.

“Good Shabbos,” her mother-in-law said, her smile stretched politely across her face.

Esther Mindy responded in kind, and immediately followed up with, “Thanks so much for inviting us! We really appreciate it. It probably wasn’t easy.”

Mrs. Grossman melted a bit at Esther Mindy’s effusive words. “It’s our pleasure. But of course, Candis and her sisters were here all week cleaning, and helping me in the kitchen. We never want to work too hard, right?”

“Of course,” Esther Mindy agreed. Of course her mother-in-law was right. That would be her motto for the night.

“And how was your week?” her mother-in-law inquired solicitously as the men began Shalom Aleichem. “How are you enjoying your job?”

Esther Mindy stifled her sigh. Would the Grossmans ever learn to hide their preoccupation with her choice of profession? They all seemed to be one-track minded. Unless of course, it was simply their standard opening and she wasn’t used to the Grossman cadences yet.

“I really like it,” Esther Mindy said, hesitating. Then she remembered Bruchi’s positive response to her new role, and she forged on. “Actually, my principal just asked me for my help with a girl who’s having a hard time.”

“Oh?” Mrs. Grossman asked interestedly.

“This girl has a hard family life, and she has a hard time sitting still in class. So Mrs. Shainberger asked if I could talk to her and let her help me a bit in the office, so the teachers wouldn’t have to deal with her all day.”

Mrs. Grossman listened attentively, her face shuttered.

“Wow, you must have a real knack for this if your principal thinks you can do it even when you are simply the secretary,” Mrs. Grossman responded, inwardly congratulating herself for complimenting her daughter-in-law, although she shuddered at the idea of her son’s wife being involved with these girls from messed-up homes. What kind of company was her daughter-in-law keeping, anyway?

Esther Mindy cringed at the reference to being, “simply a secretary,” but kept her smile firmly fixed in place.

“Actually, this is giving me such a good idea,” Mrs. Grossman said. “You know my girls have been dreaming of opening their own camp. Have you ever heard about it from them?”

Esther Mindy shook her head. “Yes, well, I shouldn’t say all the girls, because it’s mostly Leah and Bruchi. Tatty and I really liked that

idea, we would have sponsored it l’iluy nishmas Bubby Grossman.

But my girls are so busy, you know, they never actually did it. Maybe, since you’re so good at dealing with girls, you could join the project. It’s a good business, you know.”

Restraining the “no thanks!” that rose to her lips, Esther Mindy smiled politely. She waited five seconds for her revulsion at the idea to settle, then said, “You know, I think that’s such a good idea! I should really talk to Bruchi about it.”

A pleased smile rose to Mrs. Grossman’s lips. Esther Mindy looked across the table to Avrumi, who was watching them interact out of the corner of his eye.

The look in his eye made all her selfcontrol worthwhile.

It made it easier for her to rein herself in once again when the next salvo arrived.

“Did Avrumi tell you about our Shabbos Chanukah getaway?” Mrs. Grossman asked over the salmon course.

“No,” Esther Mindy put an interested expression on her face. She’d never found socializing as difficult as she was finding it right now with her mother-in-law.

“Well, it’s coming up very soon, you know,” Mrs. Grossman said. “Every year, we go to Switzerland for Shabbos Chanukah with all the kids and einiklach. It’s beautiful!”

“That sounds wonderful,” Esther Mindy said.

“Yes, it is. Have you ever been to Switzerland before?”

“No,” Esther Mindy admitted. “My family doesn’t really do those kinds of trips.”

“I guess your family would enjoy driving jeeps in the desert more than being in a five-star hotel,” Mrs. Grossman said. “I know not everyone has the same definition of fun and good times.”

Esther Mindy tried to keep the smile on her face, though it slipped a bit. Did her mother-in-law know about her father’s sports car propensity? Or was there something else behind it?

Prudently, she didn’t respond to any of the jabs. “Switzerland sounds like a great vacation,” she repeated. “I’m sure we’ll all enjoy it very much.”

“Yes, it’s a great place, very cultured,” Mrs. Grossman said with satisfaction.

Once again, Esther Mindy had to bite her lips to keep in all her real thoughts. Switzerland was boring, in her honest opinion. Yes, her family had always favored wilder trips. Going to South Africa for the drive-through safari had to be more interesting than riding a cable car over a snow-topped mountain cap. And that didn’t mean they hadn’t stayed in five-star hotels-of course the Wassers didn’t settle for cheap places to stay!

All of that, and the rest of the comments she so badly wanted to let slip, remained carefully in her mind. She didn’t let the slightest intimation of her thoughts show.

Esther Mindy wondered why her mother-in-law, once so delighted with her Wasser daughter-in-law, had decided that every part of her was so flawed. Apparently, Mrs. Grossman was too black and white

for subtleties. Things were either good or bad in her book. There was no in-between.

All the suppression was exhausting, and Esther Mindy found herself waiting for the meal to be over. She hardly made conversation as they ate their soup, hoping that her mother-in-law wouldn’t pick up on her moroseness.

Then she caught a snippet of the conversation Avrumi was having with his father, and her ears perked up.

“It does make a difference,” Mr. Grossman was saying. “Because even if the police can’t arrest the people who sent this hit man to our house, it became public news that they were trying to shut down Dr. Bloom. Now, if he does manage to finish his trials and mass-produce his treatment, people will be more likely to trust him.

“But how can he do that?” Avrumi asked, his brow wrinkled. “How can he get the funds for that?”

“You’re not funding him, right?!”

Mrs. Grossman spoke up shrilly.

“Of course not,” Mr. Grossman said.

“How could I take that chance?” A muscle in his left cheek twitched.

"But now that we know who was behind it, even though there’s not enough proof to put anyone except the actual burglar in jail, other people might be less afraid to help Dr. Bloom.” Mr. Grossman explained.

Mrs. Grossman shuddered.

“Let’s not speak about it at the Shabbos table,” Avrumi said. He launched into a vort and the subject was over.

By 11:30 at night, the hall had emptied, and Mali called Hinda. “Ima, what should I do with the money?”

“Give it to Michoel, of course.”

“I didn’t see him here,” Mali said, sounding puzzled.

“And his worker, the one who organized it all?” Hinda was sitting in the empty kitchen, sipping from a cup of cocoa she had prepared for herself. Dov had fallen asleep on the couch, and if she was not mistaken, Simi and her husband were sitting near the window that faced the open sea, getting some fresh air. Yosef had been sleeping for almost two hours already. He had returned late, eaten dinner, and then escaped to his room. He preferred not to show his face when Simi and her husband were around.

“We didn’t see any worker. Right, Riki?”

Mali’s friend nodded.

“There were a ton of people here, and I think only the importer of the clothes is here now, with his workers. They’re packing up the stuff that’s left. But there’s no one here representing Uncle Michoel.”

“Was a lot left?” Hinda stirred the dregs of her cocoa in the nearly empty cup.

“Not much, but definitely some. The sale was really not as organized as it usually is. I think a lot of women didn’t know about it. It’s a shame, because the stuff is from Bellesie, and it’s really gorgeous.”

“Well, you’re right—the sale wasn’t as organized as usual. They had a problem with the salesgirls and the advertising. There must have been a mistake somewhere.”

“Michoel—mistakes?” Mali’s cynicism came through even as she spoke and worked at the same time, bundling the bills into a rubber band and sweeping the coins into a clear disposable, one-liter container. “Riki? Racheli? Are we going?”

Hinda was happy that Mali had changed the topic to her friends, so she did not have to respond to her comment. Michoel and mistakes. It seemed that he had been making many mistakes lately. His selection of this new assistant was one of them, albeit not the biggest one.

“Go outside, Mali, and look around—see if you can find a young guy who answers to the name Martin. He’s the one who called me, and he’s supposed to be in charge of what is left, I think.” She paused. “Although I would prefer that you give the money to Michoel himself.”

“So that he should tell me from behind the door that he can’t open up for me?”

Hinda put the empty mug in the sink. She heard the voices of the couple nearing the kitchen, but when they saw the light on, their shadows receded. “Mali, I’m going to hang up now, okay? We’ll talk soon. Simi?” She raised her voice a bit. Simi stopped at the door to the kitchen.

“Can I offer you something? A hot drink?”

“Thank you.” Her husband was the one who piped up and walked in. “That would be great.”

He was happy to accept a coffee, while Simi murmured that she preferred tea. Hinda served the mugs together with a bowl of pretzels.

“Thanks,” Simi said, as she gnawed at a pretzel. But she remained silent beyond that.

“How do you like our view from the window?” Hinda chatted in a friendly tone, deciding that she would be a bit of a nudnik. Sometimes it was important. “Airs out the mind, doesn’t it?”

“Absolutely,” Simi agreed. “My father often talks about it.”

“Your father likes open spaces,” Hinda said, putting the milk back in the fridge. “We’ve walked down to the port a few times. It’s quite the walk, but a worthwhile experience.”

Simi didn’t react. Maybe she thought it wasn’t right of her father’s wife to take him for such far walks, or she felt that she’d exhausted her quota of politeness for the evening. It made no difference to Hinda; she was tired. She wished the couple a good night and left the kitchen.

From the hallway, she called Mali back to hear what had ended up happening with the money and the extra merchandise. Mali told her that a young guy with a big velvet yarmulke had appeared out of nowhere, ordered a taxi, and loaded in the boxes of extra clothing. But he’d left the money with her. ***

Rabbi Steinhaus knew nothing about what Mommy called “their tragedy.” Becky, who was peeking down at him from upstairs, could guess that by the way he entered the house, and by his gentle and kind smile.

Becky leaned her head over the railing, gazing down at the guest’s black hat and the small blue yarmulke that covered the round, bald patch that Daddy had in the middle of his head.

Guests were like Shabbos. Daddy always put on this yarmulke in their honor.

Becky sighed. It wasn’t easy being six years old. The school guidance counselor agreed with her on that. And she also agreed that it was even harder to be six years old with the intelligence of someone who was 155 years old. And the hardest thing was to be six years old, with the intelligence of a 155-year-old, and the daughter of the wealthiest man in the city.

The guidance counselor did not quite agree to that one. Becky could tell by the way the other woman had touched the tip of her nose when she said, “I hear you.”

When she had been five years old, Becky had pledged to never, ever lie. And even if she did lie from time to time, she would not touch her nose when she did, even if it was itching

her badly, because books about body language said that someone who touches his nose when he speaks is probably lying. And this way, everyone knows it. So it was really strange that the guidance counselor didn’t know such a thing.

Daddy shook Rabbi Steinhaus’s hand and led him to the study. Becky could never understand what exactly went on behind those large, imposing doors, but she knew that lots of important rabbis came from Israel specially to share Torah thoughts with her father.

Daddy loved their Torah thoughts. He also loved the pictures they brought him, all kinds of pictures of yeshivos in Eretz Yisrael, and of shuls and nursing homes there.

But all that, he would tell Mommy late at night—after Mike had disappeared—was of no use to him.

And Becky had been trying for two weeks already to figure out why these pictures could possibly help, and if it was related to Mike, who had suddenly disappeared.

In the books that Mike loved to read, the police were always searching for boys who had disappeared. They also always found them in the end. But in this case, the police refused to help.

They said that Mike’s farewell letter proved that he had left the house of his own free will, and that there was no crime involved.

And that as much as they understood and sympathized with the parents’ pain, a boy of Mike’s age was allowed to choose his own path in life.

“I gave him everything, Rabbi Steinhaus!” Daddy had a strong voice, and it filtered out from under the door and up the stairs. “I gave him everything, anything a child could want, spiritually and materially. There was no reason, there was no logic—” “Becky!”

Becky jumped in alarm. But it was just the housekeeper, with her soft brown eyes.

“Mommy doesn’t let you be out of bed at this hour,” she said. “Come on, honey, you have to go to sleep.”

It’s winter and you don’t live in the tropics or subtropics.

There simply isn’t enough, or even any UVB that reaches the ground in the winter if you are not in the tropics or subtropics, and exposure to UVB is how your body produces most of the vitamin D it requires naturally.

You have darker skin.

Those with darker skin may need as much as 10 times more sun exposure to produce the same amount of vitamin D as a person with pale skin.

You're 50 or older.

As you get older, your skin produces less vitamin D when exposed to the sun.

You spend a lot of time indoors.

If you avoid the sun or just aren’t able to get outdoors regularly, your levels of vitamin D are likely to be lower.

You're overweight or obese (or have a higher muscle mass).

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble, hormonelike vitamin, so body fat can act like a sponge. A heavier person with more body fat or even those with more muscle mass may require a higher dose than a slimmer person.

You have gut issues.

If you have a gastrointestinal condition that affects your ability to absorb fat you may have lower absorption of vitamin D.

You’re achy or tired, or both.

The classic signs of a certain type of vitamin D deficiency can mimic conditions characterized by fatigue and achy bones.

You sometimes feel "blue."

Serotonin, the brain hormone associated with mood elevation, rises with exposure to bright light and falls with decreased sun exposure.

You’re expecting.

Expecting women require higher amounts of vitamin D for their own health and delivery as well as the optimal health of their babies.

You notice unusual head sweating.

Surprisingly, one of the first signs of a vitamin D deficiency is a sweaty head.

A Daily Dose of Sunshine Fixes Everything, Right? Not So Fast…

Your skin naturally produces vitamin D when it’s directly exposed to bright midday sun.

Are you meeting the four conditions for getting enough vitamin D?

But the challenge here is that this is not true in the winter for nearly everyone reading this. Unless you live in the tropics or subtropics, there simply isn’t enough UVB available to you in the winter to make vitamin D.

Even in the summer though, I wish I could tell you that just getting out in the sun takes care of your needs.

It’s certainly my preferred method to produce optimal levels, and research shows it is the most beneficial way to get your vitamin D.

One of the primary reasons I moved to Florida is that so I can take full advantage of the sunny and warm climate to get nearly daily sun exposure. My regular exposure to the sun allows me to keep my vitamin D levels in the healthy range.

However, with the factors I just mentioned – darker skin, over 50,

gut issues, and weight – most people simply can’t get enough vitamin D from the sun.

And that’s not all…

To get the vitamin D your body needs for all its cells and tissues, four conditions must be met:

You expose large portions of your body, not just your hands and face.

You’re outside when UVB rays are at their peak, the only type of wavelengths that produce vitamin D.

You avoid the use of sunscreen during UVB exposure as it can prevent your skin from producing vitamin D.

You’re in a latitude that has adequate UVB rays.

Many people believe taking a walk during a midday break fulfills their vitamin D needs, but you now know that is usually not true. And of these four conditions, the last one may be the biggest deal breaker of all…

In most parts of the U.S. (and the Northern hemisphere, including Canada), you can’t get enough sunlight to produce adequate levels of vitamin D in your skin.

Dr. Michael Holick, a recognized vitamin D expert, has determined that if you live north of Atlanta, Georgia in the U.S., you cannot make vitamin D in your skin from about November through February.

Even as far south as Miami, Florida, you only make about 10 to 20 percent of the vitamin D in winter that you make during the summer months.

One exception to this rule is elevation… At 15,000 feet you can make robust amounts of vitamin D at northern latitudes, mainly because of the sun’s angle and because the sun has less atmosphere to penetrate.

In the images below, you can clearly see why you would not be able to receive enough sunlight during several months of the year to produce

enough vitamin D. It’s a good example of just how necessary it is to obtain your vitamin D elsewhere.

The images above show the likelihood that you will receive enough direct sunlight depending on when and where you live in the U.S., for your body to produce enough vitamin D (a process called vitamin D synthesis).

One of the Biggest Mistakes Many People (Including Doctors) Make With Vitamin D

Here’s another important fact you need to know about vitamin D: Vitamin D3 is not the same as vitamin D2.

Vitamin D3 raises and maintains your blood levels 87 percent better than D2

And taking the wrong one might do you more harm than good.

Vitamin D2 is not the type produced by your body in response to sunlight. The sun stimulates the production of D3, or cholecalciferol.

Ergocalciferol, or vitamin D2, was created in the early 1920s through ultraviolet exposure of plant foods and licensed to pharmaceutical companies.

Today, if you get a prescription from your doctor for vitamin D, it is likely to be this synthetic vitamin D2. It’s easy, even for doctors, to confuse the two forms.

I strongly advise you to avoid vitamin D2. In studies, vitamin D2 actually increased mortality risk by 2 percent! And it binds poorly with proteins, making it less effective than D3.

Compared to vitamin D2, vitamin D3:

Raises and maintains vitamin D3 concentrations 87 percent better

Produces 2- to 3-fold greater storage of vitamin D3 in the body

Converts 500 percent faster to the

more active form that your body uses Vitamin D3 is clearly the gold standard. Let’s figure out exactly how much you might need…

The Dangerous Advice That Can Leave You Woefully Deficient

A few years back, the U.S. and Canadian governments asked the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to recommend daily amounts (RDA) of vitamin D for the general population.

They determined that most individuals needed only 600 IUs (International Units) of vitamin D3 to maintain serum levels of 20 ng/ml. And they concluded that everyday foods could provide those levels.

Two Canadian university investigators challenged their findings in 2014 and discovered a drastic error in the IOM’s calculations. They found the RDA for optimal health needs to be at least 10 times greater!

Nearly all vitamin D researchers agree that the recommended range for healthy “average” vitamin D3 levels is 40 to 60 ng/ml, not 20 ng/ml.

In the chart below, you can see what increase in vitamin D3 intake is needed to achieve various serum levels (top line). For example, if your current level is 20 ng/ml (in the first column), you will likely need 5,000 IUs in addition to your current intake to raise it to 40, and 10,000 IUs to bring your levels to 60 ng/ml.

Depending on your current test values, you may need a substantial dose of vitamin D3 – 10,000 IUs per day – to bring your numbers up into the optimal range.

Additionally there are genetic defects called vitamin D polymorphisms that a number of people have that prevent them from achieving optimum vitamin D3 levels with the doses described above. They may need many times that dose and the only way to know if

you have this problem is to measure your vitamin D3 level.

Why You Likely Can’t Eat or Drink Your Way Out of a Vitamin D Deficiency

By now you’re probably wondering… “How do I get that much vitamin D3 if I can’t depend upon sunlight exposure?”

Unfortunately, your diet won’t help much, regardless of what the Institute of Medicine might say...

While certain animal foods like wildcaught salmon, sardines, egg yolk, and raw milk supply some vitamin D3, even eating large quantities each day won’t give you enough to correct a deficiency or sustain healthy, optimal levels.

While conventionally produced pasteurized milk has vitamin D3 added, you would need to consume an entire quart just to get a measly 400 IUs, which is an irrational choice on many levels.

As for plant sources of vitamin D, they provide vitamin D2 and not the preferable form, vitamin D3.

Clearly, the majority of Americans and Canadians, and many others living in the Northern hemisphere need a more consistent and reliable option for attaining and maintaining optimal vitamin D3 status…

Being a teenager and in high school can lead to stress and anxiety, especially among girls. Considering the likes of peer pressure, self-image, getting into seminary among other areas, what is a proper message to convey to parents and girls during their high school years?

The most important message that we can give girls and their parents is to build our daughter’s selfesteem. In her book The Confident Child: Raising Children to Believe in Themselves, social psychologist Terri Apter explains that selfesteem has a huge impact on successful development, and that self-esteem has more impact on a child’s growth than intelligence or natural ability. When children believe they have value and also have the skills that justify this belief, they will have greater believe in their future successes. In turn, they will work harder and longer at a task simply because they believe that they can do it,

and this will ultimately ensure higher levels of performance and completion. Apter also links confidence and self-esteem to Daniel Goleman’s theory of emotional intelligence which I have written about in the past. In his book, Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More than IQ, Goleman explains his conception of emotional intelligence: Abilities such as being able to motivate oneself and persist in the face of frustrations; to control impulse and delay gratification; to regulate one’s moods and keep distress from swamping the ability to think; to empathize and to hope… And while there are those who argue that IQ cannot be changed much by experience or education, I will show that the crucial emotional competencies can indeed be learned and improved upon by children – if we bother to teach them.

Emotional intelligence therefore grounds children as people who

can interact positively with others and continue to develop even as the playing field gets more difficult and challenging. This extends to shidduchim as well. The more we build our daughters’ base of selfesteem and self-confidence, the more successful she will be.

Are their differences between the types of stress and anxiety that teenage boys experience from the stress and anxieties that girls experience?

Yes! While there are always exceptions, teenage girls often experience significantly more stress around appearances – what they look like and how they dress.

Teenage girls also deal with very different bullying that teenage boys do. Whereas male bullies will generally chose to attack a girl or boy who they do not like, female bullies will choose someone who they see as a rival. They will use tactics such as alienation, ostracism, exclusion, and spreading rumors to harass

their peers. Girls will form alliances with other social groups in order to become more popular and have higher social status.

Girls use relationships to bully each other. This starts as early as preschool, when a girl realizes the supremacy of “I won’t be your friend anymore.” Relationships are of the utmost importance to girls in elementary and high school. They are the measure girls use to evaluate their own worth. By the third grade, the esteem and friendship of peers is nearly as important to girls as that of their families, and is more important than the esteem of their teachers. If someone threatens a girl with removing her friendship, she using the most powerful weapon in her arsenal. By threatening to withhold friendship and approval from other girls, she can effectively control a group of friends. Whereas bullying by boys is often addressed and condemned, social bullying by girls is usually brushed off as cruel but normal social interactions.

“MAC”

A healthier alternative to the all-timefavorite, these fritters are so delicious and simple to whip up.

Yield: 8-9 Fritters

INGREDIENTS:

1 12 oz. bag Pardes riced cauliflower

3 eggs, lightly beaten

½ cup cornflakes crumbs

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

2 cloves garlic

2 tablespoons mayo

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon black pepper

1 teaspoon parsley flakes

1 teaspoon onion soup mix

1 teaspoon paprika

1 tablespoon grated parmesan cheese (optional)

½ cup Mexican blend shredded cheese

DIRECTIONS:

1. Place the frozen cauliflower in a colander and let hot water run over it for 2 minutes, until softened. Drain and squeeze dry with paper towel. Place in a large mixing bowl.

2. Add the rest of the ingredients to the bowl and mix until combined.

3. Form the mixture into large patties (around 2 tablespoons each).

4. Preheat oil in a frying pan or Betty Crocker. Fry the patties on both sides until golden brown. Serve warm with a dollop of tartar sauce.

INGREDIENTS:

1 cup mayonnaise

1 tablespoon lime juice

2 tablespoons dill pickle juice

1 clove crushed garlic

4 mini dill pickles (gherkins), chopped

2 tablespoons hot pepper slices, chopped

1 tablespoon capers

½ of 1 Tuscannini Calibrian Chili Pepper, finely chopped (optional for added heat)

Salt and pepper, to taste

½ teaspoon dried parsley flakes

DIRECTIONS:

In a small bowl, add in all the ingredients and stir until combined. Refrigerate for about ½ hour before serving.

SAVORY BAKED TUNA PATTIES

Always a classic, these tuna patties are packed with umami flavor and brightened up with a dollop of the specialty tartar sauce.

Yield: 6 medium patties

INGREDIENTS:

2- 6 oz. cans chunk light tuna (in oil)

3 slices white bread, crusts removed (or ½ cup bread crumbs)

1 medium carrot, peeled and grated

2 tablespoons mayonnaise

1 egg, lightly beaten

2 cubes frozen, sauteed onions (or 1 small, freshly-sauteed onion)

1 clove crushed garlic

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon black pepper

1 teaspoon dried dill flakes (or some fresh, chopped dill)

1 teaspoon dijon mustard

1 tablespoon soy sauce

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 350° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Soften the bread slices with water and drain well. Place in a large bowl and add the rest of the ingredients. Mix to combine until a smooth mixture forms.

3. Use a large ice cream scoop to form the patties. Place on the prepared baking sheet and gently press down on each patty to flatten it.

4. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until golden brown. Serve warm with a dollop of tartar sauce.

Add bulk to your meal by adding veggies. It doesn’t take a lot of calories to feel full and the opposite is true too. There’s no need to starve in order to lose weight. Replacing extra starch or protein with vegetables helps to feel full without overloading on calories. Cauliflower is a versatile food and a great substitute for starch. Decrease carbs and increase veggies with this scrumptious roasted cauliflower recipe.

INGREDIENTS: cauliflower florets salt, pepper and oil to taste

TAHINI DRIZZLE:

1 garlic clove, crushed

½ c sesame tahini (plain)

¼ c lemon juice

¼ c water

Pinch salt

1 T parsley flakes

INSTRUCTIONS:

Preheat oven to 400°. Place defrosted florets in pan, single layer, and spray lightly with oil. Season with salt and pepper. Bake 40 minutes uncovered. Prepare the tahini drizzle: Whisk together garlic and tahini. Add lemon juice and mix well (mixture will stiffen up). Add water to create a thick creamy texture. Stir in the parsley. Drizzle over florets.

Understanding Dor Yeshorim’s Hearing Loss Panel

Why is Dor Yeshorim focusing on hearing loss?

We have seen a steady and concerning increase of families suffering from unexplained hearing loss. As the number of families across all ancestries continued to grow, it became exceedingly clear that there was a vital need for immediate and extensive research. There are currently almost one thousand families experiencing hearing loss and in need of Dor Yeshorim’s ongoing research expertise.

What has Dor Yeshorim’s research uncovered?

Using cutting edge genetic technology and working with laboratories and research groups across the globe - including our top-of-the-line R&D lab - with Hashem’s help, we successfully identified over 20 genes and more than 60 genetic mutations causing genetic hearing loss. Our research continues, but we

cannot waste any time bringing this new panel to the public.

I have no family history of hearing loss. Is this panel still for me?

Absolutely. The genes that cause hearing loss are very common. In fact, most of the families currently experiencing hearing loss have no prior history. Testing for hearing loss is no different than testing for Cystic Fibrosis, for example. Anyone can be a carrier, and the chances of being a carrier for hearing loss are actually higher than many other genetic diseases.

What steps do I take if I DO have a family history of hearing loss?

Please call our office with more information so we can ensure that you are tested for the exact genetic mutation in your family. (A list of the genes and mutations can be viewed on our website). If the genetic cause has not yet been identified or confirmed, Dor Yeshorim’s

extensive research department can provide cost-free answers and guidance. Please do not hesitate to reach out for these and all other unidentified/ unexplained serious symptoms or issues that are potentially genetic in nature.

Is the panel a guarantee against hearing loss?

The cause for hearing loss is not always genetic; therefore, the panel does not provide a full guarantee. It is, however, a comprehensive test that will, with Hashem’s help, prevent most cases of recessive, genetically inherited hearing loss.

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT

AGood question. In short, the answer is a resounding YES! Working with loads of women that have PCOS, I can tell you that you are not alone. I would like to divide PCOS into 3 categories. I will list the 3 PCOS types as well as the symptoms that are usually associated with each type so that you can get clarity as to what your best treatment options are.

1. Inflammation-Your cell is literally inflamed. It does not communicate well with the insulin hormone. Insulin is a growth hormone that we all need to survive. Insulin transports glucose (our fuel) from our blood to our cells. For example, when you eat a cookie, your body breaks it down into small glucose particles that enter your bloodstream. In response, insulin is secreted and used to carry the glucose to your cells for energy. Now, if you have been diagnosed with PCOS, there is a high chance that you have insulin resistance. This means, that your cells don’t respond to the insulin. The insulin “key” does not fit into the “lock” on your cell. When this happens, your body produces more insulin to increase the chance of getting into the cell. The result? Your body now has too much insulin. Being that insulin is a growth hormone, too much insulin… makes you gain weight, mostly in your midsection, making you look like you are carrying around a spare tire. Sugar cannot be used for energy as it is not allowed into your cells. The symptoms associated with inflammation can be; bloating, acne, hair loss, chronic fatigue, cravings, “hangry attacks” and moodiness. 80% of women with PCOS have insulin

resistance. Where does the insulin resistance tendency come from? Genetics and environment. If your family has diabetes, you can get insulin resistance. Diets that are high in inflammatory foods, plus your genetics can bring on PCOS symptoms. Limiting sugar, dairy, and processed foods can greatly improve your insulin resistance.

2. Adrenal Fatigue- 30% of women with PCOS have adrenal fatigue. This is when your adrenal glands overproduce stress hormones instead of good hormones. We each have two adrenal glands, one top of each kidney. They produce hormones that are in charge of vital bodily functions. These hormones help control heart rate, blood pressure, and other important body functions. People that have adrenal fatigue will have symptoms such as chronic fatigue, weight gain, anxiety, hair loss, sleep problems and they will be very irritable. If you get anxiety after exercise, this can be adrenal fatigue. Your adrenals are actually secreting more stress hormones and that is not good for you. Adrenal fatigue affects your quality of sleep as well. Poor sleep can lead to insulin resistance and worse symptoms. The way to help yourself feel better is by improving your quality of sleep and adding meditation and proper, calming exercise practices into your daily routine. Adding slow, weighted workouts are super important for women with PCOS that are experiencing symptoms as such. Exercise such as high intensity interval training and running can really impact a woman with PCOS negatively as her body is actually

producing way too much cortisol which will really make her feel worse. Restrictive dieting will also overwhelm your adrenals, causing them to overproduce stress hormones.

3. Hypothyroidism-This is when your thyroid/metabolic powerhouse is being told to slow down. When we restrict our diets and we overexercise, we slow down our thyroid. Our body is literally in fight or flight mode. Our body does not care about cycles or good metabolism at this point. Hypothyroidism can be caused by many things such as; restrictive dieting, eating gluten (because gluten mimics the thyroid molecule and can attack the thyroid), stress, endocrine disrupters, high blood sugar levels, and some medications. These can all hijack and deplete our thyroid.

You can understand from the PCOS types listed above that so many things can be controlled by you! The way you eat, drink, and exercise, is all in your hands! By making some smart lifestyle changes, your PCOS can literally be reversed! You can lose weight, improve your skin and moods and look and feel like a whole new person! You just have to understand what you need to do, get the support you need, and do it!

Father and Son

A menahel recently shared a poignant anecdote. After working in the chinuch field for several decades, nothing takes him by surprise - but this particular incident touched him deeply:

Our yeshivah is geared for boys between the ages of 14 and 16, and Shloimy had just about hit his 14th birthday.

He was such an earnest young boy, with clear, blue eyes and a ready smile. In those hectic days at the start of the zman, I didn’t exchange a word with him but his sweet personality made an immediate impression.

“Did you distribute the technology forms yet?” I asked the mashgiach one morning. “I like to get that done sometime in the first week.”

“Yes, the forms were given out yesterday,” he replied, waving a sheaf of papers to prove it. “Most of the boys returned them already. I’m just waiting for the last few.”

Our students pledge to completely avoid Smartphones and we are proud of their commitment. The forms are just a formality since the boys know our stance on the technology issue and they commit to it before enrollment.

Shloimy seemed perturbed. I noticed it immediately. There was something so good and golden about this new student, causing his distress to stand out and catch my attention.

“Shloimy, is everything alright?” I asked him during lunchtime. “Is there something you want to discuss?”

He blushed to the roots of his blond hair and shook his head. Moments later, I heard soft footsteps behind me and I knew that Shloimy had reconsidered.

“Uh…I – I – about the form,” Shloimy stuttered. “The form we have to sign?”

His voice jerked upward in a question mark and I wondered which part of this simple procedure he was finding so unnerving. I smiled, the most reassuring smile I could muster, but Shloimy couldn’t bring himself to continue.

“I just – I mean, forget it,” he whispered. “It’s nothing.”

Mere moments later, when I was sitting in the tiny closet we call an office, the secretary put through a telephone call to my extension.

“Is this the menahel?” the caller asked.

“Speaking.”

“My son called last night,” the man said quickly, almost desperately. “Shloimy. You probably don’t know the boys by name yet, but he’s a good boy. A gift from Hashem.”

The man swallowed audibly. I wondered what secrets lurked behind the sweet, bashful smile of his young son.

“He called me, crying,” the father continued, his voice cracking ever so slightly. “He said that he wants to sign a form, committing himself not to look at a Smartphone all year. But he’s afraid that it will be a lie.”

“A lie?” I repeated, completely bewildered.

“He told me, ‘Totty, I’m afraid that when I come home I’ll look at your phone by mistake. Maybe I’ll sneak a quick peek. How can I sign this form?’ That’s what Shloimy asked me last night. He was crying, begging for the chance to keep himself pure.”

There was silence on the other end of the line. Just when I thought he had hung up, the man said, “So I just wanted to know if you can give Shloimy a message. Tell him that…that he – he can sign the form with a clear conscience. It won’t be a lie. Tell Shloimy that I threw out my Smartphone last night.”

PUBLIC SCHOOL ACROSS THE STREET

A young professional living in the heart of Flatbush -astoundingly- until coming to BJX was never familiar with Shabbos or Kosher. Several years ago at a BJX Shabbaton, he pledged to marry only a Jewish girl. This past Shabbos he cosponsored a siyum on an entire Seder Mishnayos in memory of his father. It was recounted at the siyum that he is the only descendant in his entire family who is connected to Hashem and perpetuating Yiddishkeit. We shudder to think what would have happened had he not gotten involved with BJX. Generations of Jews would have been lost forever.

Another fellow who attends BJX and

received an Aliya this Shabbos, grew up attending the Andries Hudde public school (IS 240), located right across the street from BJX on Avenue K and Nostrand Avenue! Today, his son is attending a prominent Flatbush Yeshiva.

Firefighters in Florida said more than 60 people were rescued from a Ferris wheel at ICON Park in Orlando when the ride lost power. Orange County Fire Rescue said at least 62 people were evacuated from the Wheel, a ride that opened at ICON Park in 2015, when the ride lost power and shut down. Cellphone footage recorded prior to the ride's breaking down shows sparks and smoke coming from the machinery. ICON Park said the ride would be closed for at least a few days while a technical team conducts maintenance. Park officials did not reveal what caused the Wheel to lose power.
