Recap of Chapter 39

On the day of the Ohr Naftali and Leah clothing sale, Martin realizes that he never advertised the sale at all—so how will people know to come?! He realizes he must call Hinda.

Michoel Perl’s memory starts to come back, but only to a point. He wonders why he is in the head injuries department of the hospital, and why all of his personal belongings have been taken away from him.

CHAPTER FORTY

Hinda had spent more than half the morning finishing the kitchen plans for Leah Weitzen. Simi spent that entire time closed in her room. Her husband must have gone to learn in one of the shuls in the area; Hinda hadn’t seen him come or go. At noon, Hinda collected her papers from the kitchen table, leaving Leah a voicemail message that she’d finished, baruch Hashem, and then she went to the door of Simi’s room. She listened for a moment, and when she heard the baby wailing and Simi cooing to him, she knocked gently. There was silence inside; only the baby was still whimpering. Finally, Simi answered, “Yes?” She didn’t say, “Come in,” so Hinda remained outside. “How are you doing, Simi?”

“Fine, baruch Hashem,” the other woman replied

through the door.

“I wanted to know if there’s anything special you’d like me to make for you,” Hinda said pleasantly. “No thanks, don’t put yourself out.”

“Soup? Baked chicken? Potatoes? Letcho? Rice?”

She thought for a moment. “Liver?” She should still have a tray of liver that Dov had bought when Penina was there.

“No thanks.” Simi sounded totally disinterested. “You don’t need to prepare anything for me; I’m not in the mood of cooked food.”

“Okay.” Hinda went back to the kitchen. Even if Simi wasn’t interested in a cooked meal, her father still deserved a hot, filling meal, right?

She diced an onion and resolved to think about other things, not about the conversation—if you could call it that—she had just had.

So what should she think about? About Michoel, who was ignoring her, blaming her, and disappearing for weeks on end? And who had then called her suddenly the other day, speaking strangely, and then concluding the conversation with a sound rebuke? Or maybe she should think about Chaya Cohen from yesterday’s phone call?

Hinda snickered to herself as she picked up the phone. If all her mind could do was ponder issues such as these, she would be better off calling Kol Halashon and listening to a parshah shiur.

She prepared chicken soup, letcho, and steamed squash, but only she and Dov ate. Simi and her husband sufficed with the pizza he brought her, and they took their meal behind the closed door, talking to each other in muted voices. Only the strong pizza smell indicated that they were even in the house.

“Thank you, the food was excellent,” Dov said, standing up. “What’s the story with Simi?”

“I have no idea. Maybe their stomachs hurt last night, and they’re afraid it’s from my food? Or maybe they just didn’t like yesterday’s lunch or supper?”

Creases lined Dov’s forehead. “I don’t think so,” he said. “I’m going to ask her.”

His wife stopped him. “Please, no. I don’t want her to think I’m offended or anything like that.”

Dov leaned on the doorpost. “And you’re not offended?” he asked her.

Hinda took a deep breath. “No,” she replied. “The fact that she has something against my food—and I’m not sure that she does—doesn’t mean she has something personal against me. Let’s leave her alone; a new mother can be so sensitive sometimes.”

He was quiet. “Why don’t you go rest now?” he suggested, after a moment. “You worked hard this morning. At least tomorrow you won’t have to cook. There’s plenty of food left over… Hey, what about Yosef? He’s not coming home for lunch today?”

“Doesn’t look like it. He’ll probably come at around five. If I’m still sleeping then, I’m sure he’ll wake me up.”

But what woke her up was actually the ringing phone. “Hello?” The voice sounded rushed and somewhat nervous. “Is this Hinda?”

“Yes,” she replied, still half asleep.

“I…my name is Martin, and I am helping Michoel Perl with his organization, Ohr Naftali V’Leah. Today is the clothing sale that takes place every summer, and I forgot to let the customers know about it. What should I do now?” Without even waiting for her answer, he plowed on. “The clothes are here already, in the Ohr Hachaim Hall. And there are no girls to man the registers.”

“You are Michoel’s assistant? Where are you?”

“We’ll talk about it afterward. First we need urgent help with the sale today.”

Hinda squinted. “What did you say? The sale is today?” In the early days of these sales, she would go with her girls to manage them, but in recent years, Michoel had started hiring Yerushalmi girls and paying them minimum wage, instead of making her travel in from Haifa to Yerushalayim. “What does Michoel say?” He probably couldn’t tolerate such a mishap.

“I don’t know; I can’t reach him.”

She recovered quickly. “I can ask my daughter, who is in a dorm in Yerushalayim, to come with a few friends,” she said. “As for advertising the event… maybe you can hire a car with a loudspeaker, to go through the frum neighborhoods? I think people do that kind of thing.”

“How do I go about getting such a car? And what do I say on the loudspeaker?”

Hinda could not help herself. “Michoel didn’t give you instructions about all these things? Since when are you his assistant?” ***

Meat, potatoes, and egg salad all remained on the supper tray. The male nurse looked at the empty vegetable plate, and then at him. “Why didn’t you eat everything, sir?” he asked.

“Because I am an Orthodox Jew,” he replied. Let them know he remembered this much. “I only eat kosher.”

“How will you be able to recover if you don’t eat properly?”

“G-d will give me strength, and you will be His emissaries. Can I go out to buy myself something? Maybe there are kosher stores in the area?”

“You cannot go out, and there are no stores in the area. I’m going to the nearest city tonight; I can buy you something.”

“Thanks,” he replied. “Which city are you referring to?”

The man didn’t answer. He took the tray and got ready to leave the room.

“Can I go outside today?” Michoel asked timorously. “To the garden, to breathe some fresh air… I saw from the window that there’s a large garden here.”

“I’ll find out,” the nurse replied courteously. “Do you think you have strength to walk? To go down the stairs? We don’t have an elevator.”

“I am strong enough,” Michoel said firmly. Even if his hands were shriveled and his voice trembled a bit, he felt strong. Maybe the lack of food over the past few days was making him weak, but he could deal with steps.

The nurse went out of the room, and Michoel did not wait. He collected himself with the strength that he had, and left the room. If his sense of direction was not misleading him, the stairs should be there, behind the nurses’ station. He would just walk, and he’d see what they said.

He walked slowly. Good, there was the staircase. To his relief, no one stopped him from going down the stairs.

But the floor that he he reached did not look like a hospital; it seemed instead like an office building. Instead of going down further, Michoel entered that floor and stopped at the first door he found, belonging to “Edmond Skalholt, CEO.” He studied the door closely and then knocked on it three times. When there was no answer, he turned the knob. As someone with a head injury, he could behave unpredictably, right?

The door was locked and did not cede to his attempt to open it, but suddenly, someone inside unlocked it, and it opened. The office inside was large, and contained a long, shiny table with ten velour-covered chairs, six of them occupied. Sitting at the head of the table was “Daddy,” looking at him with that same concerned expression as the other

people present.

The man who opened the door had gray hair, brushed away from his face. He did not look familiar to Michoel. “Yes?” he said. “Are you looking for someone, sir?”

The uninvited guest rubbed his forehead. “Ahhh,” he said, after a moment. “I’m looking for a mirror.” “Daddy” stood up. “I’ll walk you back upstairs,” he suggested.

But the door-opener waved him off; there was no need. “There are no mirrors here, Mr. Perl,” he said. “Just like we have no elevators, and no cars. Almost.”

“Why?” Perl asked. “Oh, right, my name is Perl. I keep forgetting—thanks for reminding me. But why is it so bad for me to see myself? My dentist always advises me to brush my teeth in front of a mirror, to make sure the brush gets to all the corners.”

“It’s a long story, and we’ll be happy to share it with you another time, but for now, we’ll stop here, alright? You interrupted an important meeting.”

“Oh, I’m so sorry,” Perl apologized, and stepped back. “Are you part of the management of the hospital?”

“Something like that.” The man was already closing the door. “And I’ll be happy to speak to you at the next opportunity. I was actually waiting for you to recover so we can do just that. But not now.”

“But can I just ask you: How did you know that my last name is Perl?”

“When you began to come out of the coma, you spoke a little bit, and you said your name.”

“Did I give you my exact address? Did I give you other details about myself? I think I need to call my niece again, in Israel.”

“We’ll talk about that, too,” the man promised, and then he all but shut the door in Michoel’s face.

Recap: Esther Mindy is excited to record in her journal that Mrs. Shainberger asked her to take Shana, a sixth-grade student having trouble in class, under her wing. Avrumi comes home with the electrifying news that the burglar was caught in the airport, trying to leave the country on a false passport.

Mrs. Grossman hears the news that the burglar has been put in jail, which triggers for her the memories of when her father spent time in jail as well. She still can’t sleep at night.

Chapter 38

“Esther Mindy’s forehead wrinkled when she checked her phone’s screen. Why was Bruchi calling her on this random Wednesday afternoon?

Yes, all the Grossman children were following along with the crime saga, but after their last fiasco of a Shabbos seudah, they weren’t banding together to do something again anytime soon.

What gives? Esther Mindy thought as she studied the name. Sure, before the fateful Shabbos Bruchi had seemed to warm up to her again. But at that seudah she’d just sat there together with all her sisters, listening to her mother’s tirade. Had Bruchi had a change of heart?

Esther Mindy pressed “Accept” before she lost her nerve, and the call together with it.

“Hi Bruchi, how are you?” she said neutrally, as if her older sister-in-law called her to schmooze every day.

“Hi, Esther Mindy, how are you doing? Did I catch you in a good minute or did you just arrive home from work?”

“I just got home from work, which is the best time to catch me,” Esther Mindy said cheerfully as she hung her pocketbook in the closet and walked to her bedroom to kick off her shoes.

Bruchi chuckled. “How are you enjoying your job?” she asked, stiltedly. Then she mentally slapped herself for starting with such a loaded topic.

Esther Mindy tried to read the reason for the call in her sister-inlaw’s voice, but heard only awkward friendliness.

“I love it!” Esther Mindy said wholeheartedly. “Actually, there was something going on just now,

and I wonder if you would be able to advise me on this.”

The pause was laden.

“There’s a girl who comes from a really troubled family background and spends more time out of the classroom than in it. Lately, I was schmoozing with her whenever she was out of class. Somehow, my principal picked up on it and asked me if I would officially take on the job of keeping her busy during class time.”

Bruchi listened attentively.

“I thought maybe, because you’re so experienced dealing with students, you would have some tips for me,” Esther Mindy said. “I’m a little out of my league trying to deal with a hard kid. Not usually the job of a secretary, you know.”

“Right, although if you were already schmoozing with her before you obviously click with her, no?”

“Yeah, I find her cute, not hard like all the teachers do.”

Well, of course. You don’t have to teach with her in the classroom, Bruchi thought cynically. But she hadn’t called to find fault with her sister-in-law this time. She’d called

“It’s nice that you’re getting to do that,” Bruchi said. “Such a nice addition to secretarial work. When you deal with these kinds of kids, you want to build them up as much as possible. So let’s say, I do an extracurricular program. If I know that one of these kids has a talent, I try to make sure she gets a chance to shine.”

“Wow, that’s so nice of you to do that!” Esther Mindy said sincerely, ignoring the jab at her secretarial work and assuming it was unintended. “I guess here, I would see if there’s any office work I could give her that would make her feel good about herself. Maybe even put her in a position of controlled power.”

“Yes, exactly,” Bruchi agreed. “Make sure to clear your ideas with the principal, but really, this way you can have a huge impact on her life.”

“Thanks, Bruchi, that’s helpful,” Esther Mindy said.

Bruchi marveled again at Esther Mindy’s ability to make everyone around her feel good.

“Anyway, Esther Mindy, I wanted to ask you about computer programs for this extracurricular program we’re doing,” Bruchi said. Did she really need Esther Mindy’s advice? No, she could have asked the secretary at school for the information she needed. But she figured, having heard Avrumi rave about his wife’s computer skills, that this was the perfect excuse opportunity to call her sister-in-law for a schmooze.

“Sure,” Esther Mindy said. “If I know about them I’ll definitely be happy to share!”

“So this is for a workshop, which is going to be structured a little bit like a gameshow.” Bruchi explained the concept to Esther Mindy, who was listening avidly.

“Totally brings me back to high school,” Esther Mindy said nostalgically. “I breathed this stuff then.”

“You were G.O., right?”

“Yeah.” Esther Mindy confirmed. After all, if she hadn’t been G.O., would the Grossmans have let her into the family? Even like this they were having a hard time with it.

“Basically, what the girls are trying to figure out is which program is best to use for such a slideshow. I know that there are a lot of options today, and we need very specific features, so I want to give them a little guidance here.”

“Sure,” Esther Mindy responded instantly. “But a lot of such programs will need internet connection. You wouldn’t want anything like that, right?”

“Right.”

The two of them discussed their web-free options for the next few minutes, with Esther Mindy explaining each computer program’s pros and cons and answering Bruchi’s questions.

It felt slightly strange to be the wise one advising her older sister-in-law. But she was so grateful to be given the chance to prove her worth in the fields she starred in, and still impress a Grossman.

“Okay, I’m going to tell the girls all this tomorrow,” Bruchi said. “Thanks, Esther Mindy. Have a great day!”

The sweet taste of her sister-in-law’s approval left a lingering mark as Esther Mindy finished her business of getting herself comfortable and ditching her sheitel.

It also got her thinking.

The thinking continued as she called her mother and reported on her day, then moved on to her menu planning.

“I think we can do something simple tonight,” Esther Mindy said. “Avrumi’s been saying that really, all he needs is a good piece of schnitzel to feel full.”

“That’s a man for you,” Mrs. Wasser laughed. “Give them some meat or chicken to fill up the plate, and maybe some potatoes. Skip the soup or salad, right?”

“He eats it,” Esther Mindy qualified. “But if he was in charge, he would never think of making soup. I don’t think it counts as food to him.”

Mother and daughter shared a chuckle.

“So do you want to make a plain schnitzel with a fancy dipping sauce? That might be right up his alley.”

“Yes, let’s try that,” Esther Mindy said. “As long as I don’t have to run out to the grocery again because I’m already, ahem, comfortable.”

Her mother smiled. Esther Mindy’s comfortable definitely wasn’t the kind of comfortable you could zip around the corner in.

“Let me see what kind of sauce you can make,” Mrs. Wasser said. “Yum, these look so good, maybe I’ll make it for supper too.”

“Not a single one of the kids is going to eat it, Ma,” Esther Mindy said. “Plain schnitzel is for sure the way to go with unrefined taste buds.”

Mrs. Wasser gave a half-laugh, halfsigh. “That’s definitely true. Okay, here’s a recipe that uses honey. Do you have honey in the house?”

Esther Mindy did. And she spent the next hour whipping up supper while languidly chatting with her mother.

“It’s such a crazy story how he got caught in the airport,” Esther Mindy

said, rehashing the story that she’d already told her mother a few days before. “I feel like it’s such a pity that my father-in-law had to pull out of the investment. Here they even caught the guy and the doctor is still bankrupt. It’s so not fair.”

“It’s amazing that your father-in-law was able to support him until then,” Mrs. Wasser said optimistically.

“Yeah, Avrumi said his father usually doesn’t invest in such kind of research. Dr. Bloom came so highly recommended and is such a top expert that they decided to invest in him anyway, but really, they usually invest in more concrete businesses. Avrumi says otherwise Dr. Bloom could have had a really hard time finding investors. Because if he does honest research, who says he’ll come out with a profitable idea? You chap?”

“Of course. But didn’t Dr. Bloom already have most of the research done? He was up to treating real patients, right? It made me so sad to think that those poor patients would lose their only hope now.”

“Yeah, he had most of the research done, he got a grant from somewhere to fund it, and he also paid out of his own pocket. He was a top doctor for years before, and this was his dream.”

“Such a pity that he can’t fulfill it.” “I know. Anyway, Mommy, you have to hear who called me today. My sister-in-law Bruchi randomly called to ask me something. It was weird, but really nice.”

“Oh, that’s great. That means you’re a real part of the family already.”

Esther Mindy thought about that. It definitely made her feel more welcome and accepted as a Grossman when Bruchi deigned to

actually ask her advice. Maybe that had been Bruchi’s intention?

It made Esther Mindy squirm to think that that’s what it had been, but also feel good. It was nice that Bruchi was trying, at least.

After another few minutes of desultory talk, Mrs. Wasser had to go to welcome the kids home from school. Esther Mindy was left in her quiet kitchen, mixing her sauce distractedly.

Funny that she suddenly needed welcoming into the Grossman family. Back when she’d first gotten married, during sheva brachos, she’d been the queen. All her sisters-inlaw had vied to speak to her. Back when she’d still had her mother-inlaw’s approval.

But then, there was one sisterin-law who hadn’t been deemed worthy even of speaking to her. Mrs. Grossman had made it very obvious that she didn’t want Esther Mindy speaking to Raizy. There was a legitimate Grossman, born into the family, who probably felt just as ostracized as Esther Mindy had been feeling.

A powerful wave of empathy washed over Esther Mindy, making her heart ache for the sister-in-law she barely knew. Raizy couldn’t have had it easy, being the scapegoat for her mother’s insecurities all these years. Why, Esther Mindy was barely feeling it for a few months and it was slowly eroding her massive selfconfidence.

Along with the empathy came a typical Esther Mindy resolution. Checking the oven clock, she saw that Raizy would probably be finishing up supper now. Great time to call her sister-in-law to schmooze.

Just as Bruchi had done for her.

“Esther Mindy” read the name on the screen. Raizy checked twice to be sure.

What?

Why would her younger sister-inlaw be calling her? Had Avrumi told her to seek chizuk from her as well? How awkward could that get?

Raizy briefly contemplated ignoring the ringing phone. But curiosity pulled her in.

“Hi, Esther Mindy,” she said, hardly noticing that she ended in a question mark.

“Hi Raizy,” Esther Mindy said effusively. Help, she should’ve been smart like Bruchi and at least made up a good excuse for calling her sister-in-law so randomly.

“Raizy, Avrumi tells me you hosted him for supper a bunch of times when he was learning in Eretz Yisrael. I’m totally running out of ideas for suppers he’ll like. Any ideas?”

Raizy smiled. As an icebreaker, Esther Mindy had chosen a good one.

“Sure, I’m happy to give you ideas. Or send you pictures of my food, if you want,” Raizy said in her softspoken way.

“Pictures! Yes, please do send!” Esther Mindy exclaimed. “I’d love to see them!”

“Hey, I don’t do a whole professional photoshoot every night,” Raizy protested. “But I do like making the food look nice.”

“Sounds like exactly what I need.”

From there, the conversation flowed naturally, surprising both of them. Apparently, connecting to each other was exactly what they needed.

ABelieve it or not, while working out might tone you up, there can be too much of a good thing when it comes to exercise! Working out too much can cause adrenal fatigue, which includes symptoms like body aches, lightheadedness, and extreme tiredness. And when these symptoms hit, all those hours you spent at the gym could backfire — big-time. A stress hormone called cortisol is partly to blame. Pushing your body past its limits through high-intensity, long-duration exercise can mess with the hormone cortisol, leading to fatigue, reduced performance, and weight gain around your middle! Your entire central nervous system is regulated by a complicated system of hormones. Throwing one hormone off can really lead to making you not feel or look your best. When your hormones are out of whack and cortisol is high, your body responds by increasing blood sugar and insulin and lowering metabolism, which cause weight gain, especially around the midsection. If you are reading my articles for long enough, you understand that moderation and respect is the keyword here.

Overtraining is not a badge of honor. Being depressed, irritable, stressed, overly hungry, or fatigued is not normal. If you’re feeling any of these symptoms, make adjustments immediately, before symptoms worsen.

Here’s how to do that.

1. Gauge: Take a hard look at your workout routine. Is it long, intense, or too often? Do you have to jump through too many hoops to get to work out? Are you allowing your body to recover? Are you exercising and then performing a physically, or mentally, demanding job? Take inventory and commit to making adjustments.

2. Break: Sounds obvious, but if you’ve already spiraled pretty far down the rabbit hole of overtraining, slam on the brakes now and give your body a few days of rest. Working out 6 days a week might be too much. Even 4 days of very intense training might be too much!

3. Reassess: Incorporate adjustments that ensure

that you don’t go back into overtraining mode. Consider reducing the intensity, duration, or frequency of exercise. Try to incorporate gentler movements such as yoga and Pilates.

There is life after overtraining. When you commit to dropping the “all or nothing” mantra and adopting balance, you will win. Not only will your body feel better, but with the right nutrition and exercise regimen, you will look better too. If you can only add 10 minutes of movement to your schedule daily, enjoy these 10 minutes! These 10 minutes can add up to an hour of movement at the end of the week, and yes, an hour of movement is significant! Listen to your body. Do not stress about working out and do not overstress your body by introducing too many new moves at once. Slow and steady wins the race! Take one day at a time and you will see significant improvement. Keeping Warm

As the temperature drops and winter sets in, keep cozy with hot chocolate and some muffins to go with it.

HOT CHOCOLATE MIX

Hot chocolate isn’t only for snow days. Keep this homemade mix on hand for any time a craving hits.

1 (3.5 oz) bar dairy chocolate, chopped

1 (3.5 oz) bar dark chocolate, chopped

1 cup confection sugar, loosely packed

½ cup cocoa

½ tsp salt

DIRECTIONS:

Place all ingredients in a food processor or in a mini chopper.

Pulse until mixture turns powdery. Transfer to an airtight container. Heat 1 cup of milk to a near boil. Remove from heat and whisk in 2-3 Tbsp of the mix, until smooth.

(Alternatively, you can add 2-3 Tbsp of hot chocolate mix to ¾ cup of boiling water and whisk until smooth. Add ¼ cup of milk.)

Top with marshmallow or whipped cream.

HOT CHOCOLATE CUPCAKES

1 cup sugar

1¼ cup flour

6 Tbsp cocoa

1½ tsp vanilla sugar

½ tsp baking powder

¼ tsp salt

1 cup water

½ cup oil

2 eggs

Mini marshmallows, for topping

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 350°.

Line muffin tins with cupcake holders. In a large mixing bowl, combine dry cupcake ingredients. Add remaining ingredients, except marshmallows and whisk just until smooth. Fill cupcake holders 2/3 with chocolate batter. Add a handful of mini marshmallows on top of the batter, enough to fill the rest of the cupcake holder.

Bake on the lower oven rack for 20-30 minutes, until the marshmallows are puffed and golden. (The best way to test if the cupcakes are ready is to leave one cupcake plain, without marshmallows. Lightly press the center to make sure it feels firm before removing the tray from the oven.)

Let cool; then drizzle with chocolate. Yields: about 16 muffins

Note: If you prefer, these can be baked without the marshmallows. Fill muffin tins almost to the top and bake 25-30 minutes.

I knew it wasn’t good for me. I knew it wasn’t what I wanted.

Still, it was hard to make the move. The non-kosher smartphone remained in my pocket.

I really had no good excuse. The device was not really necessary for my job, so I couldn’t blame it on “parnassah.”

But the yetzer hara is good at what he does. More than once, in a moment of inspiration, I decided I would try to get rid of the smartphone. But each time, new explanations and excuses came up, stopping me from taking action. I even recognized that it was really just the good old yetzer hara who was behind the rationalizations.

One day, as if out of nowhere, I felt an extreme surge of inspiration. I had no idea why the feeling overcame me, but it did. It wasn’t any special time of year or anything, just a “regular” day… And something inside me was pushing me to jump in, to cleanse myself of this gadget that was suddenly burning a hole in my pocket.

I dumped my non-kosher device and hurried over to the store to replace it with a simple Meushar phone, before I could turn back.

I felt so clean, so pure, so exhilarated. My entire being was suffused with happiness.

Just then, I met my brother-inlaw – a very chashuve kollel yungerman and talmid chacham. He detected the glint in my eye and the overwhelming joy that was written all over my face.

“What makes you so happy today?” he asked.

I told him all that had transpired: the inexplicable inspiration, how I finally disposed of the unwanted, yet tempting, phone, about the new kosher flip-phone I had bought, and the real simchah shel mitzvah that it generated.

My brother-in-law seemed moved. “Let me tell you a part of this story that you don’t even know…”

I looked at him curiously. What might he know about my story that I’m not aware of?!

“For a long time, now, I was very disturbed by your smartphone. I knew it wasn’t good for you, and because of my love for you, I very much wanted to open your eyes. I wanted to help you understand how bad the phone was for you and how you were destroying your life with your own hands. You yourself hardly realized how the phone was leading you in a direction you surely did not want to go… But I didn’t want to risk our close relationship, so I didn’t say anything.

“Still, I could not keep quiet. I decided I would try a different avenue. I began to learn the sefer Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh, hoping that Hashem would shine the right “ohr” into your life. I hoped you would be able to recognize on your own where you are heading and where you really want to go.

“For the last forty days, I learned every day and I begged the Ribbono Shel Olam that in the zechus of the Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh, you and your children should be helped.”

My brother-in-law paused. “Today is the fortieth day.”

A couple once came to R’ Yisroel of Kozhnitz, who had special coaches to help people. They wanted him to help them find a large sum of money that they had lost.

“Rebbe,” they begged, “Bench us and tell us where we can find this large sum of money that we lost.”

R’ Yisroel refused. They were surprised. Whispering between themselves, they took out a gold coin and said, “Here Rebbe, take this to give to Tzedakah. But daven for us!”

Still the Rebbe refused to help them. He sat back in his chair and said, “For sixty gold coins I will be able to help you.”

“Sixty gold coins?” the women gasped. “For that amount we don’t need you, we could ask Hashem to help us.”

Then R’ Yisroel smiled and said, “Now I could help you. Now that you have put your trust in Hashem. You must realize that I am only a messenger from Hashem, if you place your trust in Him, then I can use my powers to help you.”
