There’s hope for depression

I did and let me tell you about the experience I had. On a cold, misty and overcast day when one would rather spend their day indoors, I and thousands of others like me ventured out down to the edge of Brooklyn to pick up the King David Chanukah box. I have heard a lot about these boxes. Friends and family have received the King David Chanukah box in the past and have said how it has truly changed the Chanukah experience in their homes. So, with all this anticipation and hype, I pulled off the Belt Parkway and onto Cropsey Ave. When turning onto Bay Pkwy I got in line to receive my Chanukah box. After getting checked in, I moved up toward the pickup point which is when I was greeted by the King David Zeidy, a jolly and warm elderly gentleman. Meeting King David Zeidy only added to the warmth and excitement. While I waited Berry Weber was performing. What a treat! After a short wait, I was ready to pick up my box. Boro Park Shomrim (BSSP) were present and directed traffic while ensuring a seamless flow. I was motioned to go to a station. As I pulled in, one of the Shomrim volunteers placed the King David Chanukah box into my car. That was it, I finally had my very own King David Center Chanukah box!

Intrigued by the whole event, I drove up, parked and needed to see all that was going on up front for myself. Never have I experienced such an event that was so well organized, fun and entertaining for the whole family, even on a cold and overcast day. As I observed each car moving up, and receiving its box, it was touching to see how excited and happy the kids and even the parents were with all that was going on. Kids were bopping up and down to Berry Weber’s music, while at the same time jumping for joy to be receiving their very own King David Chanukah box. Shomrim and the King David staff were working quickly and efficiently to make sure everyone got their box, all while keeping the line moving. I was in true awe. I asked some of the families as they were pulling out what was their favorite part of the event and all of them said the event itself. The Shapiro family from Boro Park said their kids created a countdown on the calendar until the day that they would be picking up their Chanukah box. I asked the kids

what part was their favorite and all of them said the Zeidy! They loved the Zeidy because it reminded them of their own loving Zeidy.

King David Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation has truly created what I believe to be the community event of the year. Here you had families from all over Brooklyn and the New York Metro area who were lining up with their families to get their King David Chanukah box, even some people from NJ made the trip and said it was well worth it. What was warming to see was the smiles on everyone’s faces and the diversity. The children, the parents, the volunteers, the staff and most of all King David Zeidy! It made me think of my Zeidy and the fond memories I had of spending yomim tovim and especially Chanukah with him and my Bubby. So amazed by the events outside King David, I ventured inside and was blown away by the beautiful state of the art and welcoming facility that awaited me. The staff all had smiles and greeted me warmly.

Before leaving the event, I opened my Chanukah box, and was truly amazed at how each item is so detailed and creative. There is a bag for each night of Chanukah that is beautifully designed and included fun and interactive games. Most amazing of all is the dancing Zeidy.

After seeing everything, it was truly telling how King David Center is there to serve the community. King David Center truly has shown how they not only take pride with their work in helping and caring for our Bubbies and Zeidies, but that they love doing this work. King David Center truly showed that they embody the posuk of “you shall rise before your elders and show deference to our seniors”.

Recap: Avrumi calls Raizy on Motzaei Shabbos, telling her how Mrs. Grossman had announced at the Shabbos table with all their siblings sitting there that Esther Mindy wasn’t fit to be a Grossman. He asks Raizy how she ever dealt with her mother’s comments all this time. Raizy tells him that she’s been going to therapy and explains how she separates herself from her mother’s opinion of her. She also tells Avrumi that he can’t force Esther Mindy to do what his mother wants her to.

Esther Mindy unburdens herself into her trusty diary. As she’s writing, Avrumi walks in holding a pie of pizza, as a peace offering.

Bruchi calls Leah and asks her to join her in an effort to make Esther Mindy feel more welcome in the Grossman family.

Chapter 36

“Had it been just last week that Esther Mindy had walked into her office bleary-eyed with exhaustion, unsure if the sane world would still welcome her after a whole night living through the unreality of her mother-in-law’s house being broken into?

It had been one week before. And now Esther Mindy was already sure of it-the sane world was rejecting her.

When sanity had still been her friend, she’d never dreamed the kind of scene that had played out at the Grossman home on Shabbos actually could take place. She’d never envisioned eating cold pizza over a puddle of tears on a Motzaei Shabbos after receiving an abashed apology from her husband for his lack of support. And a promise

to stay loyal to her choices in the future.

Hey, that’s what you should be focusing on, his promise, she admonished herself. But the feeling of the world gone loony only intensified when she thought about it. Of course he had to support her choices! He was her husband, after all.

Immersed in her sane and loony musings, Esther Mindy hardly noticed when Mrs. Shainberger, her boss, approached her desk.

“Good morning, Esther Mindy,” Mrs. Shainberger said with a smile.

Esther Mindy startled, dropping the Post-it note she’d been fingering and looking up in surprise. She collected herself quickly.

“Good morning, Mrs. Shainberger,” she said. “Nice to have your company today.”

Mrs. Shainberger inclined her head. It was pretty empty on Sundays, when there was no school. Even Esther Mindy and Mrs. Shainberger only came in for a couple of hours.

“It’s nice to have you around too,” Mrs. Shainberger said. “When you have a moment, would you come to my office?”

Esther Mindy’s eyes showed a hint of panic. “Oh, I have a moment now,” she said smoothly.

“Great. Don’t worry, I just want to hear how things are going and talk about some new policies, is all.”

“Sure,” Esther Mindy said, stifling her sigh of relief. Then she laughed at herself. She must be feeling offkilter. Just because her mother-inlaw was dissatisfied with her lately, did not mean her principal who’d been thrilled with her work would begin feeling the same way!

“So, first, tell me, how have you been

“I love it here,” Esther Mindy said sincerely. “The girls are really fun to talk to and I’m not finding the work difficult. Bracha trained me in well.”

“I’m glad to hear it. Are you able to keep up with the copies on your own, for all eight classes?”

“It’s fine, baruch Hashem.”

“Even with those teachers who manage to always need copies right before they walk into class?” Mrs. Shainberger winked.

Esther Mindy’s heart warmed with the wink. This was Bnos Rina, she reminded herself, where it was okay to be imperfect and you wouldn’t be kicked out for it. Not by a mile.

“I tell them to send a girl out in the middle of the lesson to get the copies,” she said with a twinkle in her eye. “It usually doesn’t take them a moment to come back either, because I end up schmoozing with the girl, you know. And then the teacher needs to send out another girl to find the first girl. And by that time, you can bet the teacher’s pretty sure she’s going to give in her copies the day before from now on!”

Mrs. Shainberger laughed out loud at Esther Mindy’s description, throaty, pleased chuckles. When she stopped, she leaned forward.

“That’s exactly what I wanted to talk about,” Mrs. Shainberger said. ***

Mr. Grossman looked up to the door as his secretary burst through it, an annoyed expression on his face. “Excuse me-“ he began, but broke off as he saw who was standing behind her.

Lieutenant Andrews.

Mr. Grossman rose hastily from his seat, motioning to his secretary that she could leave the room.

“What brings you here, Lieutenant Andrews?” he asked tensely.

Ever since the break-in, his wife had been having difficulty sleeping, suffering from insomnia and waking up in a cold sweat every so often, listening to the night sounds in fear. She didn’t admit how much she’d been impacted to anyone, but her husband knew that she was still terribly shaken.

Knowing that the burglar was still on the loose did nothing to alleviate her anxiety. Mr. Grossman hoped that the police’s visit indicated progress in the case.

“Sit down, Mr. Grossman,” the police officer said, pulling out the chair facing Mr. Grossman.

“What’s going on?” Mr. Grossman asked again, his eyebrows pulling together.

“What does your wife remember of the break-in?” the lieutenant asked abruptly.

“No, you’re not doing that to me!” Mr. Grossman said indignantly.

“You had your chance when we came down to the station. Now, tell me what happened.”

“Our detectives have been on the case for the last week and a half,” the lieutenant said. “And they think they have your man.”

Mr. Grossman half-rose again. “You have him?!! Then why isn’t he behind bars yet?”

The lieutenant held up a hand. “It’s not so simple,” he admonished. “After getting the partial description from the security agent, plus asking him to try to identify the person from pictures we have on file, we narrowed down our search to three possible suspects.”

Mr. Grossman nodded, he’d heard most of this before.

“And now that forensics has finished testing the hair that was found on the site of the tussle between the burglar and your agent, they’ve matched it to one of the three suspects. We have the suspect’s

location on file, and we’ve checked it out. He still lives there. We’d be ready to arrest him, but-“

“But what?!”

“We need to be absolutely sure we’ve got the right guy. We also need to know that we’ll manage to build up a strong enough case in court so that the guy is actually convicted and not simply set free. Because if he hires a top-notch criminal lawyer who manages to get him off the hook, then as soon as he’s free he’ll be looking for revenge against the people who got him arrested. And in this case, that’s you.”

Mr. Grossman’s face turned grim as he listened to the lieutenant describe the case.

“Don’t tell me you’re considering letting him off the hook for such inane reasons,” he demanded indignantly. “You’ll let a criminal stalk the street for this?”

The lieutenant looked at him levelly. “No, of course not,” he said. “I’m just explaining the difficulty. In this case, another way to make us feel more confident about arresting him is if we know that we have the two of you on board.”

At Mr. Grossman’s puzzled look, the police officer explained, “If both you and your wife are willing to testify, that would strengthen the case greatly. And make us feel more confident in arresting the fellow.”

“I’ll testify,” Mr. Grossman said. “But what do you need my wife for? She hardly remembers anything from that night.”

“Still, her testimony regarding the steps she heard can be helpful,” the police officer said.

“I hear,” Mr. Grossman said. “I’ll speak to her.”

came to the underhanded side of their business, updated his boss.

“And what is that development? Haven’t we thoroughly crushed the guy already?” The Investor spoke idly, as if he didn’t really believe that there could be a real threat in the making.

“Well, Dr. Bloom seems to be finished, yes. I haven’t heard anything about the bankruptcy proceedings, but I know that his main office branch is up for sale, and his workers are looking for work.”

“Perfect. So what’s the matter?”

“The police have actually been doing their job this time,” Adams said. “They’ve managed to trace our man."

“Glacier?” The Investor asked sharply. “Yes.”

“Why is he still in the country? I’d have thought he’d be gone after getting his fat paycheck. Come back under another name in a couple of months.”

“Based on the reports I’ve heard, he was badly affected by his injuries on the night of his break-in. He hasn’t been on top of his game ever since. Hardly left the house. He probably needed medical treatment, but was too scared to go to the hospital.”

“So he’s still waiting around in the same apartment waiting for the police like a sitting duck?” Annoyance crept into the Investor’s tone. “And I trusted him.”

Adams waited in respectful silence as the Investor thought about the new wrinkle that had just appeared in the business.

“Well, even if he talks, he’s got nothing on us,” the Investor said

briskly. “He knows that, and the police know that. What’s the worry?”

“True.” Adams didn’t deny it. Nor did he remind the Investor of their usual prudent moves.

“You’re right,” the Investor said, despite the fact that Adams hadn’t said anything of substance for the last few minutes. “We should help him do the prudent thing and leave the country. Get him whatever he needs to fly the coop, even if his head’s not working. Let him get his nails screwed right in another country’s hospital.”

Adams nodded. “I’ll take care of making that happen,” he assured his boss.

Raizy turned on the food processor and began grating the potatoes for her kugel. She hadn’t spoken to Mommy all week, since Avrumi’s phone call and her session with Gila Batsheva immediately afterward. But Mommy wouldn’t stand for it if Raizy skipped calling altogether, so today she would have to make the call.

It was just that Raizy didn’t want the wonderful light feeling she’d been carrying around with her all day to dissipate in the face of her mother’s criticism. She wanted the feelings that had begun to sprout with Avrumi’s admissions and Gila Batsheva’s supportive words to remain with her.

Because if even Esther Mindy, the perfect charming kallah of her mother’s dreams, had been on the receiving end of her mother’s displeasure, then definitely Raizy had no reason to assume there was anything wrong with her.

But really, it was high time she called her mother, because Mrs. Grossman would be heading to her

weekly gym session soon with her personal trainer.

Raizy dialed her parents’ house number, figuring that her father might still be home before going to work, and hoping she would get to speak to both of her parents at the same time.

Sure enough, her father picked up.

“Hi Raizy,” he said, his voice sounding unusually stressed. Well, that was understandable, considering recent events.

“What’s doing?” Raizy asked conversationally.

“Good, baruch Hashem,” her father said. “How are things on your end?”

“We’re doing great,” Raizy said. “Thinking about how to celebrate our next anniversary.”

“Sounds good,” her father said approvingly. “That’s what I like to hear. A young couple should be enjoying themselves!”

Raizy smiled. That was typical of her father.

“Send regards to Yaakov,” her father said. “I’ll be heading out to work now, so take care of yourself, Raizy, okay?”

“Okay!” she said. “Can I speak to Mommy?”

Her father hesitated. It sounded like he was walking to another room, and then he whispered, “I’m not sure if Mommy’s up to it. She had a hard night.”

“Oy,” Raizy said instantly. “What happened?”

Mr. Grossman quickly told his daughter about the request from the police that Mrs. Grossman testify.

“Mommy says she can’t,” he said with a sigh.

THE OUTSIDE BUBBLE

Hinda receives Martin’s note and tries calling him, but doesn’t get through.

A recently-remarried young woman—Chaya Cohen— calls Hinda for advice.

Kornblit gives Martin two days to think about his offer.

Michoel wonders what kind of hospital or mental institution he is in and why he is there. He doesn’t take the medication he is given, which makes his head a lot clearer.

CHAPTER THIRTY EIGHT

Simi’s manners were impeccable, to be sure. She offered her courteous thanks, like one thanks a waitress in a restaurant, adding a compliment about how tasty the food was, yet she collected her own dishes from the table. Even when Hinda objected, she insisted on doing so, but when it came to wiping down the tablecloth, she relented, smiled, and went with her husband to their room.

“The food really was excellent,” Dov said, as he wiped down the tablecloth himself. “Did you even eat, Hinda?”

“A little bit,” she replied. “I don’t have much of an appetite.”

“That’s not good,” he protested. “You need strength. Hosting these new mothers one after the other…it’s not so easy.” He squinted for a moment, and Hinda imagined that he was recalling the other times that his previous home had hosted his daughters after birth, and the other person who had been hovering and catering to them.

Hinda did not hover over Simi; she didn’t think Simi

would appreciate that. Penina had seemed more hungry for her company, and Hinda had tried to give her what she could in that sense. It wasn’t always easy for her to forego her privacy, but she did make the effort.

It hurt to admit it, but Michoel was right. He’d been right then, and he was right now. Her nature was to seek out quiet and privacy; she wanted to just remain ensconced in her own personal space. Loud surroundings irritated her. She had worked on this for years, and with great effort, and tried to ask polite questions of interest to the women who opened the door for her. She was surprised to discover how most of them responded to her casual interest. She would ask, chat, listen, nod, and just try to focus on what they had to say, without mixing in her own thoughts and opinions. These days, it went much more smoothly. But there were those people—Simi’s type—that made it very complicated.

Well, wasn’t that what each person was here in the world for? To work on what was difficult?

Hinda didn’t knock on Simi’s door, which had been double locked (she’d heard the bolt clicking into place). Even if her role was to perform the mitzvah of hachnasas orchim to the ultimate extent, that did not include being a nudnik who pushed herself into places where she was not wanted. She prepared a tray with a pitcher of juice, cups, and slices of a cake she’d bought, and sent Dov to knock on Simi’s door with it.

She tied up the large, bulging garbage bag. “Yosef?”

she called out. “Can you come here, please?”

“Is it the guy from the Emergency Room?” Yosef called back, sounding sleepy.

“The Emergency Room?” Hinda was puzzled. “Did someone from work look for you?”

“Maybe…” His voice sounded even sleepier. “Tell him that I waited for him in the supply room with an oxygen tank. Let him try starting up with me! Just let him try!”

“Who are you talking about?”

Yosef didn’t answer. She peeked into the dining room and saw him reclining on the armchair, his head lolling backward as he dozed.

She picked up the garbage bag herself to take down to the dumpster, wondering about Yosef’s remarks. He had been talking in his sleep, but she was not sure his words were based entirely on a dream.

When she returned to the stairwell, she noticed something peeking out of the mailbox. It was a paper—a rather dusty one, with shoeprints on it. As if someone had found a paper on the sidewalk and stuck it into their mailbox. What was the message scrawled on it? It would be a good idea for us to talk.

She raised an eyebrow and then tried calling the number. There was no answer.

As she entered the kitchen to tackle the dishes, her phone rang.

“Hello?” she answered the call.

“Hi,” said a young female voice hesitantly. “Is-is this Mrs. Vilensky?” “Yes.”

“Rebbetzin Werner told me to call you…” The woman was quiet for a moment. “She said that you might be able to help me.”

“If I can, I’d be glad to.” Hinda squirted some dish soap onto a sponge.

“My name is Chaya Cohen…” Was that a tremor in the young woman’s voice? “I remarried a year and a half ago. I…I need some advice.” ***

Kornblit was like a leech as he followed Martin into the kitchen. He didn’t talk; he just stood and observed as Martin fried an omelet for himself. Then he followed him up the stairs and watched the youth sit down at the computer with a dry roll from yesterday. Martin

ignored him and opened the email.

Tomorrow was the clothing sale for needy families, arranged by Michoel Perl. Martin was considering popping in there. The question was how much more complicated his life would get now because of this guy who had pushed himself into the picture.

Martin didn’t want to show how irritated he was, so he hummed to himself a tune he’d made up just then, and studied the screen closely. He didn’t look in the direction of the man standing in the room, pacing a bit. Meanwhile, Korblit opened some drawers and rifled through the papers inside.

“You have a good connection with this guy, or what?” he finally asked, after fifteen minutes of absolute silence.

“Very.” Martin was terse.

“And he didn’t tell you where he was going?” “No.”

Kornblit stopped pacing. He leaned on the doorpost and looked at the boy. “Okay, I’m going,” he said suddenly.

“Finally.”

“Will two days of thinking about it be enough?”

“Thinking about what?”

“About my offer.”

“To become your agent? To tattle on my former friends?”

“That’s not what I said, if you recall. I said to join your friends again, get back into their group.”

“Oh,” Martin sneered. “What for? Because you want me to continue being a troublemaker? Are you bored when I’m not out there?”

The man didn’t respond to the question itself. “I think you are very edgy right now, Martin, so you are not even letting me share the details of the proposal. Let’s say two days, okay? Take my number. If you have sweet dreams tonight and get up tomorrow in a good mood, maybe you’ll decide to call.”

Martin wanted to say, “Never,” but then he thought that these two days could serve him rather well. First of all, he’d be able to go and observe Perl’s sale tomorrow, and besides that—as Rabbi Eisenthal had once told him—it’s not worth losing too much over ego games. Not that he was playing ego games here; collaborating with this guy was not something he’d ever do. But

maybe his proposal wasn’t really about being a disgusting traitor? Maybe it was a bit different… “Fine,” he muttered.

“Do you want to hear now what my plan is?”

“No, I prefer to eat my dinner in peace.”

Kornblit chuckled. “You’ve got blood, kiddo, huh? Fine. Eat in peace for two days. We’ll talk after that. Just remember that I won’t be able to extend that period of time. As it is, I am hiding a few things from my colleagues on the team.” He left the room and headed for the stairs, but a moment later, doubled back and came in again.

“Hearty appetite!” he called, and then disappeared.

Michoel:

The corridor was long and dark. He actually felt stronger tonight, as if that fog that had been lodged in his brain for a long time already had moved aside a bit.

What was this, a mental hospital or a geriatric center? He didn’t dare enter any other rooms, so he couldn’t find out for sure. Was he in the former Soviet Union, where they forcibly hospitalized healthy people in mental institutions?

Here and there, he felt pain in his head and his limbs, but he didn’t think he had any mental issues. Why was he here? He was functioning, walking, talking; what had happened? True, his heart was beating a bit rapidly, but if he was not mistaken, that was an old problem, something his doctor had mentioned to him two years earlier. Dr. Dvir had given him an excellent pill for that…what was it called? It didn’t really matter; he was thousands of miles away from his doctor right now. He hadn’t taken the pills they gave him here since last night. Only yesterday had it dawned on him that he was better off not taking any medicine from them until

he could figure out who they were and what they were doing.

He hadn’t said anything to them. Often, direct talking didn’t glean much information. He actually considered himself to be a direct person, in general. Apparently, until now, things in his life had worked well with him being direct, even though Hinda often claimed that he had to know how to say things so that people should hear them the way he meant them.

In this case, she was right. He had to continue playing their game, but it was not clear what the rules were, and he felt too old for such adventures.

And also quite hungry. Oops—the corridor came to an end here. And there was a nurses’ station.

One of the nurses stood up and looked at him. “Grandpa?” she asked in English, with a heavy Southern accent. “Is everything okay? Why are you wandering around in the middle of the night?”

“My head hurts,” he replied, after a moment’s thought. “Maybe I need an apple or something; that would probably help me. I also wanted some fresh air. Can I go outside, perhaps?”

“It’s better not to,” she said amiably. “But we can ask the doctor tomorrow. Come, let’s find you an apple, and I’ll give you something for the headache. Take it, and you’ll see that within a few minutes, the pain will pass and you’ll fall asleep.”

“Okay,” he said obediently. She walked him back to the room, poured him a cup of warm water, and made sure that he swallowed the pill. And she looked very pleased.

As pleased as Hinda’s Yosef and Baruch had looked when he’d showed them his sleight of hand, the way he’d pretend to swallow something and then open his fingers to show it was still there…

You do not like change. You might even say that you hate it. This is quite common – as many people find change difficult and disorienting. Read the rest of the article to find small ways that you can make changes without feeling stuck and paralyzed.

Mostly Bs:

You aren’t opposed to change, but you aren’t exactly charmed by it either. When change comes up, even though you would like to hide from it, you understand that there are people and resources that can help you adapt and savor the journey.

Mostly Cs:

You love change! You don’t shy away from it, instead you embrace it! You are lucky that your response to change is so positive, because when life throws you a lemon, you proceed to make lemonade.

Do you ever feel stuck? Unable to change even if you desperately want to? Change is definitely hard, but there are a few tips that can help you make big change, even with small steps. In his book, The Happiness Hypothesis, Jonathan Haidt explains that our brains are split into two: an emotional side and a rational side. Haidt compares these two sides to an elephant and a rider. Our rational side, or rider, knows that we want to stop eating because we are full or get up early in order to be prepared for the day.

On the other hand, our emotional side, or elephant, likes the way the food makes us feel and wants to stay cuddled under warm covers on a dark morning. There is also an upside to the elephant, as the emotional seat of the brain, it also houses love, compassion, and loyalty. The elephant is the part of your brain that instinctually protects your kids and helps you stand up for yourself. Conversely, there is a downside to the rider. The rider overanalyzes everything and “spins his wheels” refusing to make a decision until all elements are weighed.

The metaphor continues: the rider holds the reins and directs the elephant where to go. But, this does always go smoothly because the elephant is so large and powerful and the rider so small in comparison.

In order to affect change, you need both the elephant and the rider to work together. You need planning and direction (the rider)

and energy and passion (the elephant). Often, when change efforts fail on the individual level, it is the elephant’s fault, which chooses short-term gratification over long-term gains.

In their book, Switch: How to Change Things When Change is Hard, Chip and Dan Heath give a three-step framework that they believe can help everyone, from individuals to organization, more easily affect change.

1. Direct the rider. Give crystal clear instructions for the rational side. Lay out the exact directions without any vague directives.

2. Motivate the elephant. Engage the emotional side. Don’t just show charts and spreadsheets. Get visual and tactile.

3. Shape the path. The problem that needs changing is not necessarily a people problem, it might be a situation problem. Shape the situation, or the path, so that the rider and elephant can have an easier time traveling it.

Small Steps

Here is one hands-on practical tool that the authors suggest, “One way to shrink change, then, is to limit the investment you’re asking for –only 5 minutes of housecleaning, only one small debt. Another way to shrink change is to think of small wins – milestones that are within reach… when milestones seem too distant, they should look for ‘inch pebbles.’”

That means that if you want to lose weight but the thought of an hour-long exercise class is just too daunting, commit to a fiveminute walk in the morning. Then, commit to a five minute walk every morning for a week. Bump that up to ten minutes, then to twenty, and

soon you will be well on your way to weight loss.

In the same vein, if you think about milestones, if you have a ton of company coming for Shabbat and you don’t know where to begin to cook and bake, just decide that on Wednesday night you are going to make the desserts. Once you check that milestone off of your list, you can move on to side dishes or vegetables. Each milestone will give you the needed feedback that you can move forward.

The same goes for large organizations. If the company wants to affect change, it needs to give a few small instructions that require a very small amount of time. Slowly, those can add up and create maximum change. NFL coach Bill Parcells in Harvard Business Review wrote, “When you set small, visible goals, and people achieve them, they start to get it into their heads that they can succeed.”

All of these small changes work their way into the framework of the elephant and the rider because they are helping the elephant move forward. The Heaths explain, “The Elephant has no trouble conquering these micro-milestones, and as it does, something else happens. With each step, the Elephant feels less scared and less reluctant, because things are working. With each step, the Elephant starts feeling the change. A journey that started with dread is evolving, slowly, toward a feeling of confidence and pride. And at the same time the change is shrinking, the Elephant is growing.”

And with the Elephant’s growth, your capacity to grow and change balloons! So, get out there and make those very small changes.

An Open Letter to Our Esteemed Tzibur

Digital technology is a relatively new nisayon and as such the parameters for dealing with it are not clearly defined. As in many areas, what may be beneficial for one person or community may be disastrous for the next. Needless to say, the people who decide which accommodations or compromises are necessary to help Yidden in overcoming their challenges should be our Gedolim and Manhigim. Not well-meaning frum entrepreneurs! The latest breach in our community courtesy of well-meaning frum entrepreneurs is the 24Six media device.

Of course, for those who access or would allow their children access to iTunes or Spotify via a smartphone this app may be beneficial. Although even for them, proper guidance by Rabbonim and Mechanchim would have allowed for much safer options.

But for the rest of us the app, the device and the message they send are a very dangerous step in the wrong direction. Detailing all the issues and potential pitfalls of this service and device is beyond the scope of this letter. Suffice it to say for now that each family should carefully consult with their da’as Torah before adopting new digital devices and services.

Habits for a Healthier Life

The secret is that even small changes add up to meaningful health improvements over time, especially when you know where to focus your energy. Here are several examples where a relatively small “investment” in terms of lifestyle changes will lead to major health rewards.

Five Tips for a Healthier Life

1.Stop eating vegetable oils

— Linoleic acid is the primary fat found in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), including vegetable/seed oils. It accounts for about 90% of dietary omega-6 intake. Examples of seed oils high in omega-6 include soybean, cottonseed, sunflower, rapeseed (canola), corn and safflower.

Omega-6 is considered to be proinflammatory because of the linoleic acid, which will radically increase oxidative free radicals and cause mitochondrial dysfunction. While omega-6 fats must be balanced with omega-3 fats to not be harmful, most Americans consume far more omega-6 than omega-3.

Most of the omega-6 people eat, including seed oils, has been damaged and oxidized through processing. The oxidized omega-6 develops lipid hydroperoxides, which rapidly degenerate into oxidized linoleic acid metabolites (OXLAMs). OXLAMs can cause a host of problems in your body.

· Cytotoxic and genotoxic

· Mutagenic

· Carcinogenic

· Atherogenic

· Thrombogenic

Metabolic dysfunction can also occur, while OXLAMs are also toxic to the liver and are associated with inflammation, fibrosis and fatty liver disease in humans. As researchers further noted

The stories told by our zaidy transport us to simpler times, making them the perfect accompaniment to the nostalgic taste of chocolate clusters. With every bite, we listen intently, savoring each word with intense curiosity. It is moments like these that make for an instant classic.

in the journal Nutrients, “In addition, a few studies suggested that omega-6 PUFA is related to chronic inflammatory diseases such as obesity, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and cardiovascular disease.”

Linoleic acid is found in virtually every processed food, including restaurant foods, sauces and salad dressings, so to eliminate it you’ll need to eliminate most processed foods and restaurant foods from your diet — unless you can confirm that the chef only cooks with butter.

However, because animals are fed grains that are high in linoleic acid, it’s also hidden in many ostensibly “healthy” foods like chicken and pork, which makes these meats a major source as well. Olive oil is another health food that can be a hidden source of linoleic acid, as it’s often cut with cheaper seed oils.

2. Get more sun exposure

— You’re probably aware of the many health benefits of optimized vitamin D levels. But an important caveat is that vitamin D should ideally be obtained from healthy sun exposure, not an oral supplement. Not only will adequate sun exposure naturally raise your vitamin D levels to healthy levels, but it will provide a wide variety of other benefits, many of which are only beginning to be understood.

Many people are not aware that only 5% of your body’s melatonin — a potent anticancer agent — is produced in your pineal gland. The other 95% is produced inside your mitochondria — provided you get proper sun exposure. In fact, vitamin D is more than likely a biomarker or surrogate for sun exposure, which is so intricately involved in melatonin production.

During the day, if you get enough sun exposure, near-infrared rays from the sun penetrate deep into your body and activate cytochrome c oxidase, which in turn stimulates the production of melatonin inside your mitochondria. Your mitochondria produce ATP,

the energy currency of your body. A byproduct of this ATP production is the creation of reactive oxidative species (ROS), which are responsible for oxidative stress and free radicals.

Excessive amounts of ROS will damage the mitochondria, contributing to suboptimal health, inflammation and chronic health conditions such as diabetes, obesity and thrombosis (blood clots). But melatonin essentially mops up ROS that damage your mitochondria. So by getting plenty of sun exposure during the day, your mitochondria will be bathed in melatonin, thereby reducing oxidative stress.

Getting more sun exposure also goes hand in hand with eliminating seed oils from your diet. The latter will dramatically reduce your risk of sunburn and skin cancer, as susceptibility to UV radiation damage is controlled by the level of PUFAs in your diet, almost like a dial. The PUFAs control how rapidly your skin burns and how rapidly you develop skin cancer.

3. Embrace time restricted eating (TRE)

If you’re still eating three meals a day — morning, noon and night — you’re missing out on one of the most powerful, free health interventions available. TRE involves limiting your eating window to six to eight hours per day instead of the more than 12-hour window most people use.

When you eat throughout the day and never skip a meal your body adapts to burning sugar as its primary fuel, resulting in the downregulation of enzymes that utilize and burn stored fat. As a result, you become progressively more insulin resistant and start gaining weight. When you’re metabolically unfit, your body primarily relies on glucose, or sugar, as fuel, instead of using fat as a primary fuel.

Even though the fat is there in abundance, your body doesn't have the metabolic capacity to access it. For most people, surplus fuel stored in

your body is stored in the form of fat. However, no one has more than about two days’ worth of sugar stored in their tissues. This is why when you first start fasting, and you’re unable to access your fat stores, you’ll quickly exhaust your sugar stores and can experience low blood sugar.

It's not that you don't have the fuel to generate, because your body can make sugar itself, but that process takes a while to ramp up and, as a result, most people get relatively hypoglycemic when they first start using TRE. You may experience dizziness and fatigue as a result, which are signs that you're not metabolically flexible. If you were, your body would have more than enough capacity to produce all the fuel you need to keep your brain happy and healthy.

TRE promotes insulin sensitivity and improves blood sugar management by increasing insulin-mediated glucose uptake rates, which is important for resolving Type 2 diabetes. Another study revealed that eating all meals between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. — instead of between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. — resulted in greater metabolic flexibility, reduced hunger and increased sense of fullness, resulting in weight loss.

Ideally, you’ll want to stop eating for three to five hours before bedtime, then start your eating window in mid- to late morning after you wake up. Most people reading this can benefit from embracing TRE; however, it isn’t recommended for people who are underweight, pregnant or breastfeeding. You also need to use caution if you’re taking certain medications, such as those for blood pressure or blood sugar.

Interestingly, when you're metabolically inflexible and unable to use fat for fuel, your body generates a molecule called acetyl-CoA when it’s breaking down fats — and that happens to be one of the cofactors for your body making melatonin.

So when you're metabolically

inflexible, your body produces far less melatonin in the mitochondria where you need it, because that's where almost all the damage that causes cancer is caused — due to oxidative stress from the process of generating energy within the mitochondria.

4. Exercise often

— Exercise is probably the single most important “drug” we know of, and it’s a powerful intervention to prevent Alzheimer’s, among other chronic diseases. One of the most comprehensive studies to date of the molecular changes that occur in your body due to exercise provided an unprecedented glimpse into the details of the body’s physiological response.

It demonstrated that “an orchestrated choreography of biological processes” occur, including those related to:

· Energy metabolism

· Oxidative stress

· Inflammation

· Tissue repair

· Growth factor response

In all, 17,662 molecules were measured, 9,815 of which changed in response to exercise, with some going up and others going down. Certain molecules also spiked immediately after exercise then quickly dropped, while others remained heightened for an hour.

“It was like a symphony,” study author Michael Snyder, Ph.D., professor and chair of genetics at Stanford University, told The New York Times. “First you have the brass section coming in, then the strings, then all the sections joining in.”

Even weekend warriors who pack 150 minutes of exercise into two days enjoy lower all-cause and cause-specific mortality rates, although I encourage you to make exercise a priority on most

days of the week instead. Along with the well-known benefits to your heart, exercise is protective for your brain.

If you know you’re at increased risk of dementia, for instance if a close family member has been diagnosed, it’s even more important to adhere to a regular exercise program. In seniors who are at high-risk of dementia, cognitive decline can be reduced with a comprehensive program addressing diet, exercise, brain training, and managing metabolic and vascular risk factors.

Exercise initially stimulates the production of a protein called FNDC5, which in turn triggers the production of BDNF, or brain-derived neurotrophic factor. In your brain, BDNF not only preserves existing brain cells, but also activates brain stem cells to convert into new neurons and effectively makes your brain grow.

Research confirming this includes a study in which seniors aged 60 to 80 who walked 30 to 45 minutes, three days per week, for one year and increased the volume of their hippocampus by 2%. Higher fitness levels were also associated with a larger prefrontal cortex.

5. Protect yourself from EMFs

— Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are the cigarettes of the 21st century — and most people are being exposed 24 hours a day. Most of the radiation emits from cellphones, cell towers, computers, smart meters and Wi-Fi, to name just a few of the culprits. Exposure causes serious mitochondrial dysfunction due to free radical damage. Among the most common consequences of chronic EMF exposure to your brain are:

· Alzheimer's

· Anxiety

· Autism — One of my longtime mentors, Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, has

linked autism in children to excessive EMF exposure during expectancy

· Depression

EMFs may also play a role in heart issues and infertility. Research conducted by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) also found “clear evidence” that exposure to cellphone radiation led to heart tumors in the male rates, along with “some evidence” that it caused brain and adrenal gland tumors in the rats.

While it's nearly impossible to avoid EMF exposure completely, there are practical ways to limit it. Given the number of EMFs that bombard you all day long, getting educated about the negative effects of EMFs is imperative to your well-being. Particularly if you are dealing with a serious illness, it is well worth your time to reduce your EMF exposure as much as possible.

One strategy is to connect your desktop computer to the internet via a wired connection and put your desktop — and cellphone — in airplane mode. Also avoid wireless keyboards, trackballs, mice, game systems, printers and house phones. Opt for the wired versions. If you must use Wi-Fi, shut it off when not in use, especially at night when you’re sleeping. Shutting off the electricity to your bedroom at night will also help reduce your exposure.

I encourage you to embrace all of these protective strategies that support optimal health. These are just a start, as there are many others, such as use of a near-infrared sauna, that will also protect your health and lower allcause mortality.

But remember, you don’t have to implement them all overnight. With each small step you take to reduce a toxic exposure or add a healthprotective element — like more sun exposure — to your day, the better your health will become.

Delightful Doughnuts

What better way to celebrate Chanukah than by having fun with doughnuts? Whether you choose to buy or to fry, these ideas will definitely bring the Chanukah spirit into your home. A Freilichen Chanukah!

GITTY NEUMAN

DIY DONUT BOARD

A great family activity that will make an ordinary Chanukah meal super exciting. There are no rules here, just use your creativity.

You will need:

Large wooden tray (12”x 18”)

Assorted small bowls

Basic glazes (recipes below) Dairy Fillings (recipes below)

Variety of store bought creams Pre-filled syringes (available at Peppermill) Cookies, chocolate, nuts and desired toppings

BASIC GLAZES

Vanilla Glaze:

Strawberry Filling: ½ cup whipped cream cheese 2 Tbsp confection sugar 2 Tbsp strawberry jam

Lotus Filling: ½ cup whipped cream cheese ½ cup lotus cream

Caramel Filling: ½ cup whipped cream cheese ½ cup dairy caramel cream

Peanut Butter Filling: ½ cup whipped cream cheese ¼ cup confection sugar 2 Tbsp peanut butter

Chocolate Glaze:

Chocolate Filling: ½ cup whipped cream cheese 2 Tbsp chocolate glaze

Prepare glazes and fillings: Whisk listed ingredients in a small container until smooth. Glazes and creams can be kept in the fridge, in a sealed container until ready to use.

DAIRY FILLINGS

Cheese Filling:

Arrange the board: Start by placing your donuts on the board. Then place bowls of creams and glazes around the donuts. Fill in the surrounding spaces with remaining toppings.

1 Tbsp vanilla sugar 1 cup warm water

¼ cup oil ½ tsp salt 1 tsp baking powder

GLAZE: 2 cups confection sugar, packed 4 Tbsp milk

1 Tbsp cream cheese ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

1. In the bowl of an electric mixer combine yeast with sugars and water. Let sit for 2 minutes, then add remaining ingredients. Mix on high for 5 minutes. Dough should be just slightly sticky.

2. Transfer dough to a greased bowl. Turn to coat. Cover and let rise for 45 minutes.

3. While the dough rises, prepare 12 rectangles of parchment paper, measuring 3”x8”.

4. Divide dough in 12 even sized pieces. Form a ball of dough into a 14” rope. Then fold the rope in half, twist 2-3 times and place on one of the prepared parchment squares. Repeat with remaining balls of dough.

5. Heat 2-3 inches oil in a deep pot over medium heat. Carefully lift a twist along with the parchment paper and drop into the hot oil. After a few seconds the parchment paper will detach from the dough and can be removed with tongs. Fry for 1 ½-2 minutes per side. (If they are turning brown sooner, your oil is too hot.) You can fry a few twists at a time; make sure not to overcrowd the pot. Transfer fried twists to a cooling rack and let cool completely before glazing.

6. In a small bowl, combine glaze ingredients and whisk until smooth. Place the cooling rack over a piece of foil or on a baking sheet (to catch drips) and spoon glaze over the twists, covering as much of the twists as possible. The glaze will harden once dry.

Note: Like most fried foods, these are best served fresh! If you prefer, you can make these into regular shaped doughnuts, using the same method as above.

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT

AOver the years, carbohydrates have gotten a bad reputation. People often associate them with weight gain, type 2 diabetes, and a variety of other health conditions. Yes, it’s true that processed foods high in sugar and refined grains typically lack important vitamins and minerals. However, many nutrient-dense, fiberrich foods can actually be very good for you.

While low-carb diets can be beneficial for some people, there’s no reason to avoid some high-carb foods altogether. Foods like quinoa, oats, buckwheat, bananas, and sweet potatoes can have a higher carb content but they are actually amazing for you-health wise. If you’re watching your carbohydrate intake, it's the net carbohydrate, not total carbohydrate, that has the potential to increase your blood sugar and be utilized by your body. Since your body doesn't digest and metabolize fiber like other carbohydrates, you can subtract the grams of fiber lumped into the overall carbohydrate count on food labels. That means a highercarbohydrate food that's chock-full of fiber might not be a bad choice. In fact, fiber helps slow down the absorption of the simple sugars you're trying to avoid. Fiber is just what it sounds like-fibrous, rough, and strong. For this reason, digestive enzymes can't easily break it into simpler carbohydrates. This makes fiber difficult to absorb and digest. Your body passes what it can’t digest through the gastrointestinal system, adding bulk without calories. Because fiber doesn't absorb like other carbohydrates, don't count it in your overall intake of carbohydrates! Simply put, what doesn’t absorb doesn’t count! For this reason, many people pay closer attention to their food’s

net carbohydrate-the food’s total grams of carbohydrates minus grams of fiber.

For example, there is a new bread company that was recently introduced to the kosher market, called Royo. Royo’s breads and bagels are made with loads of fiber. Meaning, a Roya bagel has 38 grams of carbs, and 32 grams of fiber in total, so you subtract the 32 grams of fiber from the 38 grams of carbs (since fiber does not get absorbed in your body). You are now left with 6 grams of net carbs! 6 grams of carbs for a bagel is a dream come true! I actually encourage all of my clients to have the Royo breads and bagels since they are full of flavor, and healthy ingredients and they actually keep you full! The fact that fiber isn’t absorbed provides a benefit for you and your digestive system. Fiber slows down the rate you process a meal at, preventing post meal spikes in blood sugar by slowing the absorption of simpler carbohydrates. Vayehi Mikeitz Shenasayim Yamim, the opening verse in the Parsha literally means, "And it was the end of two years." However, according to the Rebbe, Rebi Shraga Yair of Bialovzeg, it can also mean: MIkeitz, at the end of days, Shenasayim, years, Yomim, will turn into days. This is a prophetic statement meaning that in the end of days (acharis hayomim), what previously took years to enfold will occur in a matter of days. History literally will be on fast forward. Major events, inventions, and innovations will happen in rapid succession and at great speed. This is because time is running out This unique phenomenon motivates and compels us to accomplish more on behalf of the Jewish people. We cannot rest on our laurels. The annual farheren of the entire Shas and Siyum Hashassim gatherings of the Kollel Shas Yiden Network have evolved into a tradition demonstrating incredible, detailed and broad Torah scholarship. The Bren of Torah Invigorates

Maran Harav Boruch Mordechai Ezrachi, Rosh Yeshivas Ateres Yisroel and a Senior Member of Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah, has a grandson at Shas Yiden. Despite his advanced age, weak state of health and the effort needed to attend, Rav Ezrachi came to Beit Shemesh and climbed the stairs to the dais on the stage. Yet, as he began to debate the avreichim geonim and discuss specific and complicated sections

of the Talmud, any hint of tiredness or weakness vanished and his face shone with excitement and joy at the incredible knowledge flowing from the avreichim geonim. He became even more enthused when he asked questions on sugyos (issues/subjects) in kodshim that required careful and deep reasoning. He was simply amazed to hear how the avreichim geonim managed to quickly and easily respond to all these questions with clear answers.

"Hopefully my portion should be with yours," said Rav Ezrachi with much emotion. "I am sure that in Heaven there must be a tumultuous response to these moments -- with a hundred avreichim geonim who know all the words of Shas. In truth, one should be jealous of you for this great feeling, as you are able to study and contemplate Shas the whole year through, and how it lives with you before your very eyes. Questions - Complicated and Complex

Maran Rosh Yeshivas Orchos Torah, Hagaon Harav Itamar Garbuz, enjoyed the lively interaction with the avreichim geonim for an extended session and tested them through the length and breadth of Shas and expressed his amazement at the incredible knowledge of the avreichim geonim

His questions focused on all-encompassing knowledge of concepts and issues. For example: How many disputes between Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Shimon are there in Maseches Shabbos? The avreichim geonim noted not only listed them, but added many halachic references regarding difference between Rabbi Shimon and Rabbi Yehuda, as well as the comments of Tosfos throughout the length of Maseches Shabbos. And then they branched off into the differences that apply in Maseches Eiruvin that also deals extensively with the laws of Shabbos. He peppered the avreichim geonim with numerous such questions, addressing groups of five at a time before opening the questions to the others. The answers flowed forth at an amazing pace, much to the pleasure of the participants and that of the attendees from abroad who were excited at the incredible standard of Torah knowledge they were witnessing.

After an extensive session with the avreichim geonim, with great enthusiasm, Rav Garbuz exclaimed that it was a great honor and zechus for him to have this opportunity to engage with such avreichim geonim in Torah learning. "In you, the Jewish people are to be blessed," he said. "It is impossible to estimate or to describe the greatness of the zechus of those who support this holy project that raises the grandeur of Israel and the holy Torah in such an amazing fashion."

On the Shabbos after the Siyumim-farher, Rav Boruch Mordechai could not contain his excitement about what he had witnessed at Shas Yiden. So, reported one of those who joined him at his Shabbos seuda

He regaled them about the farher in which he had participated, describing the geonus (brilliance) that pulsated in the hall from the 100 avreichim geonim. “I have never been so moved and excited at a public gathering,” declared Rav Boruch Mordechai. “Happy is my portion that I was zocheh to witness this wondrous happening!”

Among them was the sugya dealing with "A person cannot transfer or sell something that does not yet exist", such as futures etc. He also dealt with the question of whether a person may appoint a messenger to perform a mission regarding something that does not yet exist, and other matters in this regard.

Spellbinding Give and Take

Nothing short of spellbinding was the give-andtake between Harav Yaakov Ades and the avreichim geonim. He began with words of encouragement and then launched into debate on sugyos throughout Shas. He demonstrated incredible bekius and it was as if the entire Shas was an open book in front of his eyes. He just could not hold back from the torrent of discussion with the avreichim geonim and continued to speak with them at length as his face shone with the joy of the Torah. And the avreichim geonim loved the intensity of the give-and-take. After Rav Ades came away with a deep impression

Reaction of a Shas Yiden Avreich

Shortly after the Siyumim-farher, one of the avreichim geonim commented. “I am just 27 and I tell you the truth - I never dreamed that I would get to this point in my learning. To know the entire Shas? For me, this was something achieved in previous generations.

However, here at Shas Yiden, I have managed to achieve the unbelievable in the merit of the framework, the unique methodology of learning that includes many, many revisions amid unceasing progress through the texts. I am excited today as never before, even my day of marriage…

Overheard at the Siyumim

Two fathers of two of the Shas Yiden avreichim geonim were sitting together at the Siyumim Dinner, discussing their feelings of joy at the simcha in which their sons played an important part. “If all the gedolim here were not present, I would jump up and dance with abandonment - I have to hold myself back,” said one.

The other responded, “Even when I married off my children, I did not experience such incredible joy. This is just unbelievable, my son completed Shas and was tested on it thoroughly. My son knows Shas! It was worth being born, toiling all these years just to get to this most memorable occasion. I have merited to marry off all my children, and I must confess that I have never experienced such simcha as I do now.”

If any of you was thinking of making a donation to Shas Yiden, you should double it! And if you can, add a few zeros! You should know that the zechus of supporting such a great and holy project, is indeed significant, and it's not a simple matter. Such support obligates the avreichim geonim as well. You have to pray for the donors and supporters, and that they should be blessed with all that is good through the power of the Torah and your tefillos!

Siyum Shassim, Presentations and the

Dinner

After the lengthy farheren, there was a heartfelt and inspirational maariv led by Harav Ades. This was followed by the Siyum Shassim - each of the avreichim geonim had concluded Shas for the year.

Each of the kollel wives was personally presented with a cash-filled envelope in appreciation of their unstinting support for their husbands' dedication to the very demanding study regimen at Shas Yiden. A sumptuous dinner followed for the kovod Hatorah, and in honor of those who support Torah, accompanied by song and music by Aharon Samet. All present agreed that the incredible engagement-farher and siyumim combined to be a Torah happening to remember.

“These avreichim geonim finish Shas every year, and they know Shas cold… If you go on line (www. shasyiden.com) you can see Rav Chaim Kanievsky farhering them… And other gedolei Torah farhering them.

“Well, last night Rav Boruch Mordechai Ezrachi (94 years old) the oldest of the Rosh Yeshivos, and some other Rosh Yeshivos farhered them… and they asked me also to farher them, and so I did.

“It was an amazing and special experience…”

Rav Stefansky addressed the avreichim geonim on many subjects in Shas. Then he 'pulled out his 'bag of tricks'. “I started out calm and easy and then I suddenly pulled out my illustrations that were especially created for the occasion. They then had to decipher them and their riddles as to which subjects in Shas were being depicted, the context, the outcome and the halacha This, too, developed into an extended and lively session. It was quite exceptional.

“It was a great zchus for me to test them. Truth is

that I was not surprised at their knowledge because one of them is my chavrusa, and in our kollel we have another avreich who learns there in the afternoonBelzer chosid, so I am familiar with them.

“But all together, it was just amazing. Their knowledge… Afterwards I was talking with them and I asked: 'Is there anyone here with a normal, average brain? Someone who is not an illuy and with a head of a gaon? In answer to my question, many of them raised their hands. So, I asked them for ideas or suggestions for chazora and memorizing, and that opened up an interesting discussion on the subject.

“Among all my questions I asked these:

Where in the entire Shas are there seven consecutive words that begin with the Hebrew letter Chaf? A: Nedarim 10b

Where in Shas are there 44 consecutive words that end with the Hebrew letter Nun? A: Shabbos 104

In our sugya we just learned about Bar Padda, and I noticed a note in Art Scroll that says that he was the nephew of Bar Kappara. (Meilah 4) So, I casually asked who was Bar Padda's uncle. All of a sudden all of them, and they each had a microphone, and all called out together - Bar Kappara, Bar Kappara - Meila Daf Dalet, Meila Daf Dalet. It was crazy, just crazy.

It’s a phrase that often used when discussing technology and its conveniences.

“You’re still punching the buttons of that outdated flip-phone? Come on, get with the program!”

“What do you mean, your business doesn’t have a website? Get with the program!”

“You’re kidding! That’s how much you paid?! The online prices are a fraction of that! Why don’t you get with the program?!”

This phrase would have served Velvel the wagon-driver quite well, had it been coined a few centuries ago. He had been hired by R’ Moshe, a wealthy wine merchant, to deliver several barrels of wine.

“It’s the end of Tishrei,” R’ Moshe told him. “You’ll travel immediately to the vineyards, show the proprietors this sales slip, and pick up the barrels of wine that I’ve already paid for.”

“Sure, no problem,” was Velvel’s enthusiastic reply. “Simple enough.”

“I need to sell that wine at the city fair, that’s set to take place in Kislev,” the merchant cautioned. “Make sure you’re here on time. If you’re late, I won’t pay you a penny! You hear, Velvel? The wine must be here before the fair begins!”

“Yeah, yeah,” the wagon-driver harrumphed. “No problem.”

He set out immediately, and reached the vineyards in record time. Velvel was puffed up with pride as he urged the horses on their way back to town.

“Velvel is reliable,” he chanted happily. “Velvel is so smart and quick. Velvel is every merchant’s first pick!”

But the approaching winter wasn’t impressed with Velvel’s confident manner. It moved in quickly, almost unex-

pectedly, turning the smooth roads into a treacherous trap. Hail and snow pelted the wagon-driver and his precious cargo.

“Not again!” he yelled, when the axle of a wheel broke off for the umpteenth time. “I’ll never make it back on time!”

He tried. He really did.

For several days it seemed that he would succeed despite the odds, but a sudden snowstorm kept him stranded in a tiny little village, a week’s distance from home.

By the time Velvel clip-clopped through the city streets toward R’ Moshe’s home, the fair had come and gone.

“Look what the wind blew in!” R’ Moshe exclaimed, trying to contain his mounting fury. “You know how much money I lost?! Now I’m stuck with a wagonload of wine and not a single customer in a five-mile radius!”

Velvel shrugged. “My fee, please.”

R’ Moshe laughed. “A deal’s a deal, my friend. You came late. I don’t owe you a single kopek!”

Velvel didn’t accept his matter-offact refusal. He called the wine merchant to Beis Din, but was disappointed when the dayanim ruled that since the condition had been clearly stated in advance, R’ Moshe was in the right.

“But – but – it can’t be!” Velvel exclaimed. “Look here. This ruling is based on halacha, right? And the halachos are all written in the Torah, right?” Velvel took a deep breath and then smugly delivered the punchline. “Well, the Torah was given in Sivan, when the weather’s nice and sunny. There were no snowstorms and broken wheels and stranded wagon-drivers then! Had the Torah been given in the winter, I would surely have been in the right!”

His claim is ridiculous.

The Torah doesn’t change to suit the weather.

Nor does it change to fit the technological realities of a dizzying digital revolution.
