THE OUTSIDE BUBBLE

Martin decides to travel to Haifa to speak to Hinda herself and tell her the truth about Michoel Perl. She’s not home, so he goes to Rambam Hospital to speak to her son, Yosef.

Yosef sees Martin and runs to hide from him, in the supply room.

Michoel finally calls Hinda, but he sounds weak and seems to be speaking nonsense, leaving Hinda confused.

CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN

Yosef stayed in the supply room until three o’clock. When someone from the staff entered—and it happened a few times—he pretended to be looking for something in the drawers, making every effort to appear calm.

When he emerged, glancing furtively in all directions, Ra’ayah, one of the nurses, greeted him with an angry rebuke that Dr. Tennenbaum had been looking for him, and what was this all about, and how could he display such a lack of responsibility? He apologized politely, but she did not seem pacified by his apologies, and they certainly were not going to help the doctor whose shift had already ended. Oh, well. Dr. Tennenbaum was a nice guy who usually complimented him a lot; they got along really well. Now he probably wouldn’t want to be as complimentary. But what could he do? There are emergency situations in life.

He boarded the bus and headed for home. Ima did not come to the door when he knocked; Dov was the one who opened it for him after a few long moments. “Ah, Yosef!” He looked surprised. He stood for another moment in the doorway, and then moved aside. “How are you?” he asked. Then, turning to inside the house, he called out, “Hinda, Yosef is here!”

Something about Ima’s expression matched that of her husband. It was a mixture of surprise and worry, and a touch of disapproval. “Is everything alright, Yosef?” she asked. “Are you feeling okay?”

“Yes…” he muttered, heading for the kitchen. If Ima would make him some hot cocoa, that would be great. But he heard unfamiliar noises from the kitchen, and stopped before he reached the door. “Who is in there?”

“Dov’s daughter, who just had a baby, and her husband.”

“I thought she went home already.”

“It’s her sister.” Hinda smiled. “And I made a really delicious lunch. Do you want to eat?”

“What, with them?” He pointed to the kitchen with his chin. It was quiet now; they were probably sitting and listening to every word. “I can eat in the dining room.”

Ima didn’t say, “What are you talking about? You’re going to eat with everyone.” Instead she said, “No problem. Go wash your hands, and I’ll bring you soup. With noodles and croutons, right?”

“Yes.” He dragged his feet toward the bathroom. There was an impressive baby carriage parked in the hallway, and he studied it. Last week, it had been a baby girl, and she was always dressed in pink. Now, it was a boy, with a blue outfit, and he was whimpering quietly. Should he stick the pacifier into his mouth? Maybe it wasn’t a good idea. Ima was very strict about him washing his hands with soap when he came back from work in the hospital, and he still hadn’t done that.

He washed his hands and came out of the bathroom. The baby was crying louder now, and Yosef leaned over him. Where was the pacifier? “Where is your pacifier?” he asked. Instead of an answer, someone came from behind and tugged at the carriage.

“Excuse me,” the young man said, without looking at him. “I’ll bring him to my wife.”

“I wanted to give him a pacifier. He’s crying.”

“I know,” the man said, still not looking at him. “Thanks, it’s fine. His mother will give him a pacifier.” He smiled a strange smile, and then, when he was standing about six feet away, he said, “I’m Binyamin. Nice to meet you. Uh… it’s not a good idea to get too close to a tiny baby, okay?” Yosef didn’t introduce himself, or say that likewise, he was pleased to meet the man. He looked at this Binyamin for another minute as he wheeled the carriage into the kitchen. Then he turned to the dining room and sank into the chair next to Ima, who had served him a bowl of soup. “Thank you,” he said, gazing at his reflection in the spoon. “These people aren’t nice, by the way.” He poured croutons into his bowl. “The other couple was fine, but whatever. It doesn’t matter.” ***

It had been an exhausting excursion, and worse—it had led to nothing. From Yerushalayim to Haifa, from Hinda’s house to Rambam Hospital, and then back to her house. He didn’t go upstairs the second time; his futile tour of Haifa had drained him of the courage to face Michoel’s relatives and admit that he had been deceiving them for days on end, and perhaps they had lost precious time as a result. He left them a note in the mailbox with his phone number and the words: It would be a good idea for us to talk. Now the ball was in their court. He headed back to Yersushalayim.

Martin walked up the path leading to the house, carrying a case of RC Cola. He listened for a moment to hear that everything was in order, and opened the door. He walked in and glanced around as he usually did, but everything was quiet.

But on the second floor, near the computer, someone was waiting for him.

“Good afternoon, Martin.” The man smiled and stood up, proffering a hand.

Martin stared at the man, wide-eyed and wordless. “You can sit down,” the man said to him. “Take a chair from the other room. I’m waiting for you here.”

Martin finally found his voice. “And if I don’t want to?”

“You don’t have to talk to me,” the man said, his eyes fixed on the screen ahead. “But allow me to predict that this conversation will only benefit you.”

“Your voice… We’ve spoken before,” Martin said, with undisguised contempt.

“I see that you have a good memory,” the man complimented him. “So, do you remember who I am?”

“No.”

“Yaron Korblit.”

Martin didn’t drop his gaze. “I don’t really care.”

The man laughed. “Okay, I’ll continue to work here. I just hope you don’t have any complaints against me that I intruded into a stranger’s house, yes? If you want to hear what I have to say to you—let me know.”

Martin left the room and walked over to the glass doors by the porch. He looked out, but he did not see any of this character’s men downstairs waiting for an order to arrest him. Of course, though, he realized, such an order could come at any given moment, even if he didn’t see anyone. He went back to the computer room. “When will you give the order to arrest me?” he asked.

“Order to arrest you?” The man laughed again and moved the computer screen closer to the wall, so that he could see Martin’s face better. “Why, what did you do that deserves an arrest?”

“In your view, I caused two Arabs to be run over, intentionally.” Martin leaned on the wall. “Is that not enough?”

“If we are finally getting into the conversation for which I made the effort to come here,” Yaron Kornblit said, standing up, “then maybe we should go downstairs and do this calmly, in the living room, alright? I see that Perl has a pretty good couch.”

“Seems like you’ve toured the house.” The man could mock his invasion of this house, but he really felt like his territory was being invaded without permission!

“Uh-huh,” Kornblit said with a smile. He left the room and turned to the stairs. Martin followed, but when he reached the bottom of the staircase, he didn’t go into the living room. Instead, he turned to the kitchen, where he jerkily took two cups out of the cabinet, and tore the plastic wrap around the case of cola that he’d left on the floor there. “Here,” he said, entering the living room, where Mr. Kornblit was already sitting comfortably. He set the soda can down on the table with a thud.

Yaron Kornblit sipped his drink quietly, and then put the empty cup on the floor near the sofa. “Look,” he said, looking straight at Martin. “Let’s erase what was, okay? You came to Israel, you got a bit too enthusiastic about the politics and the mess, and you joined some radical, rightwing youths and were a candidate for deportation. We’ll erase that, okay?”

Martin didn’t react.

“At one point, you hit—I want to believe unintentionally— two Arabs, and you were suspected of attempted murder. They weren’t killed; one is completely recovered, and the

“I hit?!” Martin stared at the man. “As if I was the driver! I tried to turn the wheel at the last second, when Rudy fell asleep! I tried to prevent the accident, not make it happen!”

“Very possible,” Kornblit said, in a bored tone. “But because we are erasing this incident from your file in any case, these details are irrelevant.”

“Erase?” Martin didn’t plan on believing any of this for a moment. “As far as you’re concerned, I can go back to school?”

“For my part, yes. The problem is that I don’t decide alone. I came here on my own initiative, and I’m not authorized to erase everything.”

Martin stood up and began to pace around the dining room. He faced Mr. Perl’s large china closet, and saw his distorted image reflecting back at him from the base of a candlestick. “So what is it?” he finally asked, turning to his guest. “What did you come to tell me? I don’t get it.”

“I came to offer you to cooperate with me.”

The boy looked at him. “Meaning?”

“If you are able to join your group of friends, that would be great for us. It—”

“To be an agent for you guys? No thanks.”

“Don’t say ‘you guys.’” Kornblit filled his cup again. “I told you I’m here on my own.”

“And how do you think I’m supposed to do such a thing, anyway? I got them annoyed, big time.”

“What, as Shadow? You for sure were like a leech, I have to say. I enjoyed reading your correspondence each time. But now you can tell them that you were afraid, and wanted to throw us off your tail, and that’s why you wrote what you wrote. We can guide you each step of the conversation; you’ll see how they will believe you. We have excellent experience.”

“Training spies? Wait a minute, first you were speaking in your own name, and now you’re back to the plural.” Martin’s eyes smoldered. “In any case, I don’t care whether you are speaking for yourself or for others; I’m not a disgusting collaborator!”

Kornblit looked rather amused. “I’ve done some homework about you, you know. I understand that in Canada, you did cooperate with the law against your friends, which is why you panicked at the idea of being deported there.”

“That’s not true.” Martin pressed his lips together in a thin, firm line. “It was all a story. I don’t want to talk about it anymore.”

“And if you’ll be deported, what will you do?”

“It’s better this way, when you threaten me and show me who you really are.” Martin sat down again, taking care to keep a distance from the man. “If you deport me, I’ll go to America. With my visa, I can get in there as well.”

“And what will you do there?”

Martin laughed. “I’ll start again from scratch.”

“Wouldn’t that be a shame?” Kornblit shifted toward him, ignoring the boy’s intentional retreat. “You were in Canada, you got thrown out of school, hooked up with some street gang, got messed up with the law, and got shipped out here. And it all happened again, just in the reverse order—you got hooked up with the street gangs, you got in trouble with the law, got thrown out of school, and you’re about to get thrown out of the country again… You plan to start it all over again? Aren’t you starting to bore yourself with this life?”

“Each one and the life that G-d ordains for him,” the boy said philosophically.

“Oh, you’ve started mentioning G-d? There are a few important things that He tells man. Do you know about them, or do you use Him only when it works for you?”

“Can I help you with anything else, sir?”

“Certainly. What about Michoel Perl? It seems that you’re trying to find him.”

The boy, who was walking to the door, turned around at once. “How do you know?”

“Three guesses.”

Martin was quiet.

“Nu, did you find anything interesting?”

Martin scowled. “Check it out the same way you found out that I’m looking for him.” TO BE CONTINUED

Without adequate levels, you'll experience a number of physical symptoms, ranging from numbness to fatigue, but your mental health can also suffer significantly.

In fact, vitamin B12 is increasingly being recognized as an important tool for combating mental illness — and deficiency, which is common as you age, could be setting you up for depression, dementia, cognitive decline and more.

Vitamin B12 May Help Treat Depression

Vitamin B12 plays an important role in neurological function, and deficiency leads to a number of related changes, including personality disturbances, irritability, depression, dementia and even psychosis. Further, it's been shown that people with depression and high B12 levels have better responses to treatment.

In one study of nearly 200 depressed adults, those who received vitamin B12 supplementation along with antidepressants had significantly improved depressive symptoms.

Specifically, at three months' follow-up, 100% of those who received B12 had at least a 20% reduction in symptoms, compared to only 69% in the antidepressant-only group. Other studies have found similarly impressive results, including one that found patients treated with 0.4 milligrams (mg) of vitamin B12 a day had decreased depressive symptoms.

It's also been observed that up to 30% of patients hospitalized for depression may be B12 deficient, while among the elderly

with depressive disorders, those with B12 deficiency may be 70% more likely to experience depression. Those researchers went so far as to say that vitamin B12 may be causally related to depression.

As for why vitamin B12 is so strongly linked to depression, Oregon State University's Linus Pauling Institute explained a couple of prominent theories:

"The reasons for the relationship between vitamin B12 deficiency and depression are not clear but may involve a shortage in S-adenosylmethionine (SAM). SAM is a methyl group donor for numerous methylation reactions in the brain, including those involved in the metabolism of neurotransmitters whose deficiency has been related to depression.

Severe vitamin B12 deficiency in a mouse model showed dramatic alterations in the level of DNA methylation in the brain, which might lead to neurologic impairments. This hypothesis is supported by several studies that have shown supplementation with SAM improves depressive symptoms."

Vitamin B12 also helps regulate homocysteine levels, and increased homocysteine is linked to B12 deficiency as well as depression. Homocysteine is an amino acid produced by the body, which in large amounts can increase your risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Vitamin B12 works by making sure the homocysteine in your blood is successfully expended by your body.

B12 Is Protective Against Dementia and Cognitive Decline

B12's role in the suppression of homocysteine is also one reason why it's protective of your brain health, since homocysteine tends to be elevated when you have brain degeneration. Having a serum (blood) level of homocysteine greater than 14 micromoles per liter is associated with a doubled risk of Alzheimer's. As noted in

a 2010 paper:

"Deficiencies of the vitamins folate, B12 and B6 are associated with neurological and psychological dysfunction … In the elderly, cognitive impairment and incident dementia may be related to the high prevalence of inadequate B vitamin status and to elevations of plasma homocysteine.

Plausible mechanisms include homocysteine neurotoxicity, vasotoxicity and impaired S-adenosylmethionine-dependent methylation reactions vital to central nervous system function. In light of this, it is imperative to find safe ways of improving vitamin B status in the elderly …"

B12 is even linked to reduced brain shrinkage. A 2013 study showed that not only do B vitamins slow brain shrinkage, but they specifically slow shrinkage in brain regions known to be most severely impacted by Alzheimer's disease. Moreover, in those specific areas the shrinkage is decreased by as much as 700%.

People with Alzheimer's disease are also more likely to have lower levels of vitamin B12 in the cerebrospinal fluid compared to those with other types of dementia, even when blood levels of B12 were similar. Writing in the Indian Journal of Psychiatry researchers further explained:

"Clinical trials have indicated that Vitamin B12 delays the onset of signs of dementia (and blood abnormalities), if it is administered in a precise clinical timing window, before the onset of the first symptoms.

Supplementation with cobalamin enhances cerebral and cognitive functions in the elderly; it frequently promotes the functioning of factors related to the frontal lobe, in addition to the language function of people with cognitive disorders. Adolescents who have a borderline level of vitamin B12 deficiency develop signs of cognitive changes."

Neurological Problems

Linked to B12 Deficiency in Vegetarians

Vegans or strict vegetarians who abstain from animal products and do not supplement their diet with vitamin B12 will often become deficient and may face increased risks of neuropsychiatric and neurological problems as a result.

When 100 vegetarians were compared to 100 omnivores, the vegetarians had significantly lower B12 levels as well as increased rates of depression, peripheral neuropathy, paresthesias (pins and needles sensation) and psychosis.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder has also been linked to B12 deficiency (and elevated homocysteine). Neurological problems, in particular, are a possibility even at the "low normal" range at or just below 258 picomoles per liter (pmol/L). A level of 148 pmol/L or less is considered a deficiency state. As noted by the USDA:

"Deficiency can cause a type of anemia marked by fewer but larger red blood cells. It can also cause walking and balance disturbances, a loss of vibration sensation, confusion and, in advanced cases, dementia. The body requires B12 to make the protective coating surrounding the nerves. So, inadequate B12 can expose nerves to damage."

Vitamins B6, B8 (inositol) and B12 in combination have also been found to be very effective for improving schizophrenic symptoms when taken in high doses — more so than standard drug treatments alone, possibly because schizophrenics tend to have abnormalities in their B12 and glutamate pathways.

Why Vitamin B12 Deficiency Is Common

The only reliable and absorbable sources of vitamin B12 are animal products; however, even meat eaters can be deficient, for a number of reasons. It's been suggested that nearly two-fifths of Americans may have lower than ideal B12 levels, with 9% deficient and 16% below 185 pmol/L, which is considered marginally deficient.

"Many people may be deficient at this level," said Katherine Tucker, formerly with Tufts University in Boston, and who presently leads the Center for Population Health and Health Disparities at UMass Lowell. "There is a question as to what the clinical cutoff for deficiency should be … I think there is a lot of undetected vitamin B12 deficiency out there … It's not because people aren't eating enough meat … The vitamin isn't getting absorbed."

B12 is tightly bound to proteins and high acidity is required to break this bond. Some people may not have sufficient stomach acid to separate the B12 from the protein. Advancing age may also diminish your ability to absorb the vitamin from food and increase your risk of deficiency, as may any of the following scenarios:

Vegetarians and vegans are susceptible since B12 is derived from animal products.

People who regularly drink alcohol, as B12 is stored in your liver.

Anyone with an autoimmune disease like Crohn's or celiac, which may prevent your body from being able to absorb B12.

People who drink more than four cups of coffee daily are more prone to vitamin B deficiencies than non-coffee consumers.

Those who've had gastric bypass surgery and therefore have altered digestive systems, as this may impair B12 absorption.

People exposed to nitrous oxide (laughing gas), which can wipe out whatever B12 reserves you may have in your body.

Adults over 50, because as you grow

older, your ability to produce intrinsic factor decreases.

People with helicobacter pylori infection. Intrinsic factor is a protein made by stomach cells that's necessary for B12 absorption. H. pylori bacteria can destroy intrinsic factor, thereby preventing B12 absorption.

People who take antacids, which have a tendency to interfere with B12 absorption, especially over time.

Patients who take metformin for low blood sugar, as the drug interferes with B12 absorption, doubling your risk of deficiency.

Anyone taking a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) like Prevacid or Nexium or H2 blocker such as Pepcid or Zantac. Research shows taking PPIs for more than two years increases your risk of B12 deficiency by 65%.22

People who have taken antibiotics, as these drugs have been shown to induce vitamin B12 deficiency.24

Signs You May Be B12 Deficient

Symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency often start gradually and worsen over time, culminating in a variety of physical and mental symptoms, including:

A numb, tingly, "pins and needles" sensation in your hands, legs or feet, which may indicate possible nerve damage

A red, swollen, "beefy" tongue with fewer papillae "bumps" containing taste buds

Mouth sores/ulcers

Blurry or double vision, or shadows in your field of vision, caused by optic nerve damage from a B12 deficiency

Yellow skin (jaundice), an indication that your red blood cells are degrading, which releases a yellow pigment in the process

Unstable, wobbly and dizzy feelings, which are signs there may not be enough oxygen in your blood, related to low B12

Memory loss, which may be a red flag when it has no other potential cause

Anemia

Fatigue and weakness

In adults, B12 deficiency can develop in about six years, which is how long it takes to deplete your body's B12 stores. It's important to be aware of your intake and catch a B12 deficiency early, as impaired brain and nerve development can be very difficult to correct once the damage is done.

The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of vitamin B12 for adults is 2.4 micrograms (mcg) a day, but there is some controversy over whether this is enough, especially for the elderly. You don't need to worry about overdosing on B12 because it's water-soluble, so your body will simply flush out any excess.

If you have a minor deficiency, increasing B12-rich foods, such as grass fed beef liver, wild rainbow trout and wild sockeye salmon, in your diet can help, but for more serious deficiency you may need weekly shots of vitamin B12 or daily high-dose B12 supplements.

As for which type of B12 supplement is best, methylcobalamin, which is the naturally occurring form found in food, is more absorbable and your body retains it in greater amounts than cyanocobalamin, the form of B12 found in most supplements.

Recap: Esther Mindy tells her mother about her blacklist status in her mother-in-law’s eyes. Her mother assures her she can win her favor again easily, but Esther Mindy admits she’s not sure she even wants that anymore. She calls Bruchi to tell her she’ll be making dessert for Shabbos, and Bruchi is impressed.

Bruchi and Leah discuss how sad it is that Mr. Grossman had to stop funding Dr. Bloom.

Raizy tells Gila Batsheva about the break-in and how it made her view her mother differently. She describes the family Shabbos meals, and says that she received a phone call from her brother Avrumi right afterwards.

Chapter 35

“Avrumi called me really late at night, which is not his type,” Raizy explained.

She thought back to the phone call she’d had with her brother, whom she hadn’t spoken to since his wedding.

“Hi Raizy, what’s doing?” Avrumi started off with an attempt at casualness.

“Hello, Avrumi. How was Shabbos?”

“It was really nice. Bruchi said you sent her the flower ideas, right? Esther Mindy said she really liked them.”

“Thanks!” Raizy was pleased, although she could sense a heavy underlying message in his words.

“Esther Mindy made a really nice dessert, these mini chocolate tarts,” Avrumi continued giving her what seemed to be random information.

“Sounds delish.” Raizy was starting to get edgy.

There was an awkward pause as Avrumi tried to collect his thoughts.

“What else happened on Shabbos?” Raizy asked.

“Mommy got mad at Esther Mindy,” Avrumi whispered the unsayable words. He looked around him-the street was deserted at this time of night.

Raizy sucked in her breath, but didn’t respond.

“Mommy was talking about her personal organizer and Leah was talking about her personal trainer, and Esther Mindy said something about how it’s hard for her to hire these people because she has her own taste and likes to do things her own way,” Avrumi continued spilling his story as Raizy listened. “And Mommy told her that she obviously has no class, and she doesn’t know how to do things properly and that

she’s not -that she’s not fit to be part of the Grossman family because she just doesn’t have what it takes.” He blurted out the last line and then took a long breath.

“Oh, Avrumi,” Raizy said, her voice laced with pain and sympathy. “What did Esther Mindy do?”

Avrumi didn’t answer as he remembered how his wife had gone white. This time, it wasn’t just him and his father-in-law at the Shabbos table, but all of his sisters and their families too. Esther Mindy had been deeply humiliated, and her eyes had immediately turned to him, seeking an escape.

But Avrumi had simply sat there like a stone. He hadn’t heard exactly what his mother said, but he felt helpless to do anything to save the situation.

And Esther Mindy had clammed up for the rest of the meal, which made the conversation around the table

extremely awkward. No one stayed around too long after that.

Esther Mindy had maintained her silence all the way home, and had immediately headed for bed when they got home, even though she never took a nap on Shabbos afternoon.

“Tell me, Raizy-how do you deal with it?”

Avrumi’s voice was full of the confusion he felt. He was used to being the golden boy who did everything right and listened to his mother in every area. Suddenly coming up against the fact that his wife didn’t meet his mother’s approval left him floundering.

Raizy was quiet, unsure how much she should share.

Avrumi took advantage of her silence to continue talking.

“Look, I’m gonna be really open here, okay?” Raizy confirmed her agreement.

“Everyone knows that, you know, Mommy and you don’t really get along, right? Or rather, that Mommy has, maybe, a little issue with wanting everyone to do and be exactly what she wants and when they’re not she gets really upset, and she a lot of times takes it out on you, right?”

Raizy inhaled. “Yeah. Hey, Avrumi, I didn’t know you know how to be so open!” Her very masculine brother was talking like an overly emotional female.

“I know, this whole thing is really not like me,” Avrumi sighed. “But anyway, what I’m trying to get at is, how do you manage to put up with all the comments Mommy makes to you without, you know, like totally losing it?”

Raizy still didn’t respond.

“You don’t have to answer me,” Avrumi said. “I definitely didn’t always do what I could to make it easier for you, and I feel really bad

about it now. I should have stuck up for you, especially by my wedding. I hope you’ll be able to forgive me. And really, I’ll understand if you tell me to figure it out myself. But you should just know that Esther Mindy is so horrified she doesn’t want to go back to Mommy’s house anymore.”

“You want to know the whole truth, Avrumi?” Raizy said slowly. “I never knew how to deal with it. I-I” she swallowed. “It was torturous for me. It was so awful I can’t breathe talking to you about it, even now. But in the last few months,” she hesitated again, “I actually started going for therapy. And I’ve been learning how to separate my sense of self from Mommy’s comments more and more, and I also started learning how to deal with it when she does make those comments.”

“Wow,” Avrumi said. “I’m shocked. Mommy would faint if she ever found out, you know.”

“I know. And I’m trusting you that this is not getting back to her. But if you want to know how I’m dealing with it-that’s how.”

“So you think Esther Mindy has to go for therapy now?”

“No, not at all,” Raizy said. “I think it’s more about not letting her opinion define you. Not letting it bother you, you know?"

"Yeah,” Avrumi said. He was surprised by the amount of depth that hid behind Raizy’s quiet façade. “Esther Mindy has been trying to tell me that we can’t let Mommy make all our decisions for us, and we can’t listen to everything she thinks is important. I don’t know-what do you think, Raizy?”

“Of course, you can’t. What’s the question? Especially if she’s just forcing Esther Mindy to be another clone of herself. That’s not fair to her at all.”

The strangeness of the conversation was palpable to both of them. Who would have thought that Raizy

would go from being the victimneeding-support to the experienced advice giver role she was playing tonight?

“I don’t know. Why can’t she just do whatever Mommy likes? She knows how to, she just doesn’t want to.”

Raizy winced at the implied unlike you.

“She can,” Raizy said softly. “But she doesn’t have to. It isn’t fair to force her to be something she isn’t really.”

She left the implied comparison unsaid. But of course, it was just as unfair to force Esther Mindy into a mold as it was to force Raizy to be something she wasn’t.

Avrumi sighed. “But you do try to make Mommy happy, usually,” he said, almost accusingly. “Don’t you think it’s worth it to try?”

Raizy didn’t answer.

“Don’t you think so?” Avrumi repeated.

“You really want to know what I think?” Raizy asked.

“Yes, of course,” Avrumi said impatiently.

“I think it’s not up to you, Avrumi. This isn’t up to you. Only Esther Mindy can decide this.”

Raizy couldn’t fall asleep that night as she replayed the conversation over and over. Had her brother truly apologized for his lack of support? Had he truly asked for her advice?

Now, after she’d finally passed the night, made it to her session and told Gila Batsheva all about the shocking phone call, she looked up at her therapist again.

“Do you think what I told him was right?” she asked.

Dear Diary, Did you know that “interfering mothers-in-law” wasn’t just a cliché? That an interfering mother-in-law can literally wreck your life.

Or at least it feels like it can.

My mother-in-law said such absolutely horribly horrifically nasty things to me this Shabbos that I am basically ready to bury myself under the covers for the rest of my life. And Avrumi didn’t even blink an eye when she said it.

He always defended me till now. What happened?

He’s taking a really long time to get back from Maariv. He probably knows that I’m still curled up on the couch being miserable.

I never had anything like this in my life. My mother would never, ever, not in a trillion or a gazillion or gajillion years ever say anything even close to what my mother-in-law says. My mother thinks that all her kids are just perfect the way they are.

Kay, I know you’re not supposed to compare, so scratch that.

I just don’t know what to do. I’m so miserable. And I know Avrumi just wishes I would make his mother happy.

I can’t do that. I can’t. Especially since I spent ten hours slaving over those mini chocolate tarts and she didn’t even appreciate it. I don’t think I’m ever going to really make her happy, as long as I’m married to her son.

How am I supposed to convince Avrumi to be on my side? This feels so crazy. Isn’t your husband always on your side?

Now Avrumi winces every time he hears about the latest model car my father drove up to an expo across the country. He’s scared his

mother’s going to hear about it. I even had to stop wearing my pink scarf and giraffe sweatshirt because I know he’s nervous about his mother finding out about those too. And that I like wearing my Crocs from five years ago because they’re so comfortable. Now I’m wearing my Birkenstocks because-

Esther Mindy sat up and stopped writing as soon as she heard the door open. It was Avrumi, holding a pie of pizza.

“Hi,” she said, a lot more dully than Avrumi had ever known was possible for his ever-ebullient wife.

“Hello,” he said cautiously, seeing the notebook she held. “Want to come eat Melava Malka? Nothing as gourmet as you know how to make, but still.”

Esther Mindy looked at Avrumi, hope flaring in her eyes. Did Avrumi still believe in her ability to make gourmet dishes? Maybe all hope wasn’t lost. ***

“Hi, Leah,” Bruchi said. “Have a few minutes now?”

“Whoa, what’s up with the formality?” Leah asked warily. “What did you want to talk about?”

“Just wondering how we can make sure that Esther Mindy feels comfortable in our family. You know, it’s our job, too, to make sure that she feels accepted by the Grossmans.”

Talk about direct. Leah was floored. “You sure are a sweet sister-in-law, but who tells you she wants to be accepted by the Grossmans?”

“Oh, cut it out, Leah. Of course she wants it.”

“She doesn’t seem to be trying so hard to fit in.”

“I guess you didn’t see how hard she must have worked on those little tarts.”

Leah thought about that for a minute.

“She only tries to fit in when it works for her.”

“Well, she can’t exactly twist herself into a pretzel to make us happy, can she?”

“Yeah, I guess.” The logical part of Leah’s brain agreed with Bruchi. The empathetic part of her that made her such a success at work felt Esther Mindy’s pain deeply, and was fully ready to jump on Bruchi’s bandwagon.

But somehow, the part of her that was still tied to her mother’s apron strings of approval refused to align with those thoughts.

“I think Esther Mindy deserves more from us. I think we could be a lot more welcoming that we’ve been till now.”

“Agree, Bruchi. What do you want us to do?”

“Nothing major. Just to call her to schmooze, ask for a recipe, tell her about a sale. Like we do for each other. To let her know that we appreciate her presence.”

“I’m on board, Bruchi.” She just hoped her mother wouldn’t be upset at them for supporting Esther Mindy.

DIY CHANUKAH MARKET BAR

A DIY (Do-It-Yourself) bar is always a great idea for Chanukah parties. It allows the hosts to truly enjoy the moment, and gives guests a fun and exciting way to experiment with different foods (a lot less leftovers here!). Plus, it can easily serve as a potluck with everyone bringing a topping for the table.

This “Chanukah Market” was inspired by fresh and delicious Mediterranean flavors. Using chummus as the base, we added an assortment of pitas, breads, and crackers, shawarma, falafel, liver and other savory toppings, for a delicious and fun bar that all ages can enjoy.

THE TABLE

You can easily build your own farmer’s market-inspired tablescape. Be creative. As long as you keep within the same color tones, you can use an assortment of different vases, tableware, and candles, or whatever else you have on-hand. Have fun!

• Start with a woven white, grey, or denim tablecloth.

• Cut and crumple brown parchment paper to create placemats.

• Start layering: First a simple charger plate, then a coordinating napkin. Top with a menu card and a mini clothespin. Use twine ribbon to tie a knot in the center and bring it all together.

• Create a table runner with a contrasting woven cloth and an assortment of vases and greenery.

• Modern white or vintage silver flatware will both work well for this theme.

CRUNCHY HONEY MUSTARD SALMON

Ingredients:

1- 2 lb side of salmon

Salt and pepper, for sprinkling

2 tablespoons mayonnaise

3 tablespoons mustard

1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup

1 teaspoon onion soup mix

½ teaspoon smoked paprika

1 teaspoon lemon juice

1 Tuscannini Calibrian Chili Pepper, finely chopped (optional for heat)

¼ cup cornflakes crumbs

3 tablespoons french fried onions

2- 1 oz bags Veggies Stix

Parsley, for sprinkling

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Rinse salmon and pat dry. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.

3. In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, mustard, honey, onion soup mix, smoked paprika, lemon juice, and chopped Chili pepper (optional). Whisk until smooth. Spread the mixture on top of the fish. Sprinkle with corn flakes crumbs, Veggie Stix, french fried onions, and parsley.

4. Bake for 15-18 minutes. Switch the oven to broil and cook for another 3 minutes. Serve.

GRAPEFRUIT RASPBERRY

PASSION FIZZ

Ingredients:

3 cups orange raspberry passion drink

2 cups cranberry juice

2 cups seltzer

1 grapefruit, juiced

1 lime, juiced

Lime slices and fresh/frozen cranberries, for garnish

Directions:

1. In a large jug, combine all ingredients and stir until combined. Add the lime slices and cranberries to the drink or use them as decorations for individual cups.

POTATO LATKES:

Ingredients:

Oil for frying

6 Idaho potatoes

6 eggs

2-3 teaspoon salt

Pinch of black pepper

Directions:

1. Grate potatoes in a large bowl. Drain most of the liquid. Add the eggs, salt, and pepper and stir until combined.

2.Heat oil in a large frying pan. Scoop batter into hot oil and fry on both sides until golden brown. Drain on paper towel and serve.

CANDIED SPICY MAPLE BEEF FRY

Ingredients:

Oil, for frying

1 lb. fresh sliced beef fry

5 tablespoons maple syrup

½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Directions:

1. In a small bowl, combine the maple syrup, cayenne pepper, and black pepper. Add in the beef fry slices and stir until fully coated.

2. Heat oil in a large skillet. Fry the beef fry until browned and crisp. Drain on paper towel and cut into large chunks.

Baking Tip: You can also bake these in a single layer on a baking sheet, at 350° for about 15-18 minutes until browned and crumbling.

GARLIC AIOLI

Ingredients:

¾ cup mayonnaise

3 cloves garlic, crushed

2 ½ tablespoons fresh lemon juice

¾ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Directions:

Mix mayonnaise, garlic, lemon juice, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.

SMOKY ZA'ATAR CHICKPEAS

Ingredients:

2 cans chickpeas, rinsed and drained

4 tablespoons olive oil

3-4 teaspoons salt

1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

4 tablespoons zaatar spice

1-2 teaspoons smoked paprika

½ teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 400° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Spread the rinsed chickpeas on paper towel. Cover with some more paper towel and pat dry until some skins come off. Remove the top paper towel and let air dry for about 10 minutes.

3. Place the chickpeas in a single layer on the baking sheet. Add the rest of the ingredients and toss until fully coated. Bake for about 20 minutes. Remove from oven and stir. Return to oven and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until crisped.

CHARRED GARLICKY OLIVES

Ingredients:

2- 19.7 oz cans whole, pitted olives, DRAINED (you can use a combination of green and black)

½ cup canola oil

6 tablespoons olive oil

½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

½ teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional 12 cloves garlic, crushed

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 450° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Spread the drained olives in a single layer. Add the rest of the ingredients and toss until fully coated.

3. Bake for about 30-45 minutes until browned. Broil for an additional 5-10 minutes until charred as desired.

HOMEMADE LIVER

Ingredients:

3-4 tablespoons oil, for frying

1 large white onion, thinly sliced

½ lb chicken liver, cut into small pieces

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon sugar

Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Directions:

1. Heat oil in a small pan and sauté onions, salt, and sugar on medium heat for about 15-20 minutes until caramelized.

2. Add the chicken liver and season with black pepper. Cook for an additional 5 minutes on high heat until the liver is browned.

SILKY SMOOTH CHUMMUS:

Ingredients:

2 cans chickpeas, rinsed and drained

4 tablespoons tahini paste

4 tablespoons olive oil

2 lemons, juiced (½ cup lemon juice)

2-3 teaspoons salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

4 cloves fresh garlic

4 tablespoons water or 4-5 ice cubes (for thinner consistency)

Directions:

1. Place all the ingredients, besides the water, in a high speed blender.

2. Blend for about five minutes until smooth. Gradually add water or ice cubes and blend until the desired consistency occurs.

JALAPENO TOMATO GARLIC CONFIT

Ingredients:

2 pints cherry tomatoes

2 heads garlic, peeled into cloves (about 24 cloves)

1-2 jalapeno peppers, sliced

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon freshly ground black peppers

1 ½ cups oil (or enough to reach the tops of the tomatoes

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 400°.

2. Place all the ingredients in a medium baking pan. Stir until combined.

3. Roast for about 1 hour, until the garlic is soft and the tomatoes are browned and beginning to burst. Broil for an additional 5 minutes.

SIMPLE PAN-FRIED MUSHROOMS

Peel and slice baby bella mushrooms. Fry in a pan with some oil, salt, and freshly ground black pepper.

FRIED EGGPLANT CHIPS

Cut an eggplant into small chunks. Sprinkle with salt and let sit for about 15 minutes. Rinse and pat dry. Fry the eggplant chips in a large, deep skillet until browned. Remove from heat and drain on paper towel.

Fruits and nuts are the sweet treats of nature. Chocolate craves are common and that’s ok. There’s no commercially-made chocolate that beats a chewy chocolate ball made with natural ingredients only. Even if you’re not a fan of dried dates, you can enjoy these balls. The cocoa along with the texture makes it the perfect crave-calmer. Whenever our brain expects to receive energy, we crave. The energy does not need to come from food though. For that reason, we may crave sweets when were bored or in a bad mood. Our brain is craving emotional energy, but we tend to interpret it as a physical need for food when we’re not really hungry. If you do turn to food, keep away from empty calories or highly processed food since it keeps you craving. Focus on natural, nutrient dense food choices, to feel at your very best, physically and emotionally.

BROWNIE BALLS

2 cups Medjool dates, pitted

1 cup nuts, unsalted (cashews or walnuts)

2 tablespoon cocoa

1⁄2 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoon nut butter (natural peanut butter or almond butter)

1 tablespoon almond milk, unsweetened (or water)

1⁄2 teaspoon pure vanilla

Shredded coconut or chopped nuts (optional)

Add all ingredients to food processor. Blend with “S” blade. Let mixture cool in fridge then form into balls. Coat with nuts. Keep frozen.

ADid you know that PCOS is one of the most complex endocrine disorders in the world? Understanding what is going on with your body will help you properly manage your PCOS. Firstly, what is PCOS? PCOS is an endocrine and reproductive disorder that affects 1/10 of women. PCOS is characterized by high levels of androgens (male hormones) and problems with cycles. In order to understand what drives PCOS, you need to understand what insulin is. Insulin is the key to it all. Insulin is a growth hormone that we all need to survive. Insulin transports glucose (our fuel) from our blood to our cells. For example, when you eat a granola bar, your body breaks it down into small glucose particles that enter your bloodstream. In response, insulin is secreted and used to carry the glucose to your cells for energy. Now, if you have been diagnosed with PCOS, there is a high chance that you have insulin resistance. This means, that your cells don’t respond to the insulin. The insulin “key” does not fit into the “lock” on your cell. When this happens, your body produces more insulin to increase the chance of getting into the cell. The result? Your body now has too much insulin. Being that insulin is a growth hormone, too much insulin…makes you gain weight, mostly in your midsection, making you look like you are

carrying around a spare tire. If you are gaining weight for no explained reason, insulin can be the culprit. Besides weight gain, women with PCOS can also suffer from skin tags and other skin issues and terrible cravings for sweets and carbs. When a large amount of glucose enters your bloodstream (let’s say you ate a bowl of pasta) your body responds by releasing a large amount of insulin. Insulin quickly puts all the glucose (fuel) into your cells making you feel…. hungry…. again. And the vicious cycle continues. The more refined foods you eat (think bread, pasta, cake, etc.) the greater increase in insulin you get and the more foods you crave since your sugar level dipped very quickly because of the high levels of insulin that were suddenly secreted. Going back to your question- can PCOS be helped naturally? 100% yes! Here are some ways to go about it:

Insulin: We now understand the core issue. We need to stop creating so much insulin. How is that done? By making lifestyle changes revolving around food. Improvements in your eating patterns can reduce your insulin and androgen levels.

Medication: Your doctor might also prescribe a medication known as Metformin. Metformin is an insulin-lowering medication and is a real help for weight management.

Physical activity: Exercise is one of the most effective treatments for PCOS. In fact, it is equally important as taking medications and a healthy diet. Both cardio and strength training can improve your insulin levels. When our muscle cells get worked out, they are able to use insulin more effectively and efficiently. This means that when we work out, our bodies don’t need to produce extra insulin.

Stress management: What does stress have to do with PCOS? Stress levels affect mood and how the hormonal and immune systems function. Stress can also influence how and where we gain weight. Being stressed puts you in constant “fight or flight mode” with excess cortisol production. Learning how to manage your stress can be very helpful in your quest to heal your PCOS.

As you can understand, there is a lot that goes into helping you on your journey. I would recommend that you find a nutritionist that can help you sort out what needs to be worked on in order of importance to really heal the whole you.

Shabbos Parshas Noach 5780. Nachman and his wife are the proud parents of a precious set of twins – a boy and a girl, after more than five years of waiting.

“It was as if the Ribbono Shel Olam was telling us, ‘Ten months ago, you broke two smartphones – yours and your wife’s, and now you are rewarded middah k’neged middah with two children – a boy and a girl!’” Nachman shares with delight. We spoke with Nachman, firsthand, to verify the details of his story. This is how it all began.

They were five hard, painful years. We visited doctors, endured various treatments, and tried every possible segulah. We davened at kivrei tzaddikim and begged for brachos from gedolim. But from Shamayim, the answer was “no.” Perhaps Hashem just wanted us to get closer to Him.

In our quest to improve our level of kiyum hamitzvos, I took an honest step back. Both my wife and I had smartphones, even though the gedolei hador expressly disapprove of carrying this little gadget that contains all the depravity and infatuation of this world. I suggested to my wife, “Let’s throw out the smartphones. We will forego our natural inclination and surely Hashem will respond above nature and bless us with

children.”

For my wife, this was difficult to accept. She was very connected to her phone. More so, all her friends and close family members had such phones, and going against the tide seemed insurmountable.

“Only if the Gadol Hador Harav Chaim Kanievsky T”zl will promise that if I throw out the phone I’ll merit having children, could I make the move,” she said.

The very next day, I stood in line at 23 Rashbam Street in Bnei Brak. Rav Chaim was quiet for a moment after I shared my story. Then he said, “Tell her that if she’ll throw out the device, she’ll be zocheh to children.”

I was ecstatic and rushed to share the news with my wife. She burst into tears at the thought of finally having children to light up our darkened home.

In a display of emotion, my wife broke her smartphone and davened from the depths of her heart that her mesirus nefesh to disengage from her addiction simply because it does not conform with retzon Hashem bear fruit, as Rav Chaim assured.

You cannot imagine the tears of gratitude that we spilled as our deepest wish was fulfilled –after years of treatments, tefillos and segulos.

Everyone takes a paper plate and decorates it. In the middle of the table, put 4 plates of nosh. One for each תוא. For example:

Now play the regular game of dreidel. Each player gets one nosh at every spin (except for נ). Just be prepared that the younger kids are going to eat their nosh right away. So put away some for the end. When everyone is going to enjoy their plate, they’ll want too!

This is a game that even adults can enjoy. It makes everyone laugh... SIt in a circle. Put many hats, shawls, and gloves/mittens in the middle. You decide what every letter is going to represent. נ = remove one item you’re wearing ג = glove or glasses (or both) ש = shawl ה = hat You spin the dreidel. If you get a ג run to the middle, put on a glove or glasses... And so on with every תוא. The winner is the player with the most items put on!

Second part of the game: Prepare a chocolate bar in the center. Spin the dreidel. Your aim is the dreidel should land on a ג. The first kid to spin a ג (player 1), can run to the middle and start munching on the chocolate bar, one cube at a time.

Meanwhile, the other players spin quickly till someone else gets a ג. That player, (kid 2) runs to the middle and tries taking off layers of the kid inside (kid 1). Kid 1 tries running back to the circle very fast. Kid 2 can start munching chocolate until the next kid gets a ג. And so one... Enjoy!

This is a fun competition for two kids at a time. Tie 2 donuts with a ribbon. Connect it with scotch tape to a table. Try eating with your hands in the back. Winner is the one that nishes rst!

“Zoom in” is a fun family game!

Someone old enough goes around the house and snaps zoomed in pictures. Print it out. (If you want it to be harder for the participants at the party, print it in black & white.)

At the party, participants look at a picture. The one that guesses what the picture is gets the card. Winner is the player with the most cards.

Some ideas: The logo on your fridge, the edge of a furniture piece, a design on your carpet... Get creative!

Divide into groups of 3 (or 4 if you want it to be harder). The challenge is to nd something all 3 have in common. Be creative. Enjoy!

Before the party, ask everyone to bring a picture of themselves. Then, everyone decorates a half a page with their names.

Mix the pictures and names. Cover with soup plates. Spread it apart. Enjoy playing memory. Who has the most pairs?

Everyone writes one small thing that they promise to give רדנ ילב as a Chanukah present.

For example:

“I’ll wash the dishes one night when its your turn.”

”I’ll go to the grocery instead of you.”

”I’ll bake you a cake”

”I’ll babysit for you one night” and so on...

Then you mix all the cards and give one to each participant. When we played this game in our family, the grandparents that hosted the party got a card from their youngest daughter that was 17 years old. She promised to babysit their kids at their next chasunah... So be ready for funny promises and lots of laughter!
