Martin reaches Shimon Weisskopf in New York, who is upset at Michoel Perl for cutting off ties with him. He tells Martin that he’s the one who had set up the whole electronic system in Perl’s home, and that his computer is connected to Perl’s house—so he can tell that activity is going on in the supposedly empty house.

Martin feels guilty for covering up for Perl’s absence, which has ensured that no one look to find and help him.

Michoel is having strange thoughts/dreams.

CHAPTER THIRTY SIX

“Yosef? Yosef Schorr?” Dr. Tennenbaum scanned the area with his eyes, but the young man did not seem to be in the whole Emergency Room department. Dr. Tennenbaum shook his head and went back inside, to the nurses’ station. “Has anyone seen Yosef Schorr around?”

“I saw him fifteen minutes ago,” said one nurse. “He went to bring Mr. Zeivald back from radiology.”

“Zeivald is here already,” the orthopedist muttered, a bit impatiently. “And I told Schorr that I need his help!”

“It happens that someone goes out for a moment,” the nurse replied. “He’ll probably be back in a couple of minutes.”

But Yosef did not come back. He sat next to the

window in the small supply room, his face tensely watching the door. He gripped a long, narrow oxygen tank with his hands, planning to throw it at the attacker, whenever he’d come in. Let him dare come in! That thin, short youth thought that he could trick him like that and chase him away from Yerushalayim, all the way to here!

It was not his imagination. He was the one who had gone to Uncle Michoel’s house! That boy had tried to irritate him then, and now he had come here. Yosef was sure of it!

Fine, he knew that sometimes, he saw things that did not exist; things that were only present in his thoughts. But this was real—very, very real. So maybe it wasn’t good that he was hiding here; it would make more sense for him to go over to the other guy, begin to yell, and show everyone the youth who was chasing him. But there was no guaranteeing that anyone would believe him. What if the boy would shout that it was all a lie? For sure, everyone would believe him, the boy, and not Yosef Schorr, the schizophrenic. Would Ima come? Who would she believe?

It was a tough question, and Yosef fingered his small beard nervously. His mother was good. She tried so hard. But she also wasn’t on his side a lot of the times; that was the fact.

He knew that she did that for his own good, but it did not help him when he felt so alone facing the world...

Outside, beyond the closed doors of the Emergency Room at Rambam Hospital, Martin wandered around, not quite believing that he was here. Only at dawn did the thought enter his mind to come here. It was so simple to leave, to stop a taxi, and then to board the bus to Haifa. No policeman or security officer had ordered him to join them, and, to the best of his ability to discern, no one had followed him here. And now he was here. He was not yet sure that at the right moment he would be able to tell the niece the truth, but he had decided to at least advance in the direction of that moment.

The name and address had appeared in Perl’s telephone book, but none of the doors in that building, nor the doorbells near the mailboxes, bore the name “Schorr.”

“Schorr? Oh, you mean Vilensky. Third floor, apartment nine.” The neighbor, whose door Martin had decided to knock on, was generous with the information when Martin asked. “Very nice, refined people; a second marriage. Poor lady, she was widowed years ago. All her children live far away, and the one who still lives at home, Yosef, works at the Emergency Room of Rambam Hospital.”

Martin thanked the man for the information and climbed to the third floor. When no one opened the door after fifteen minutes of intermittent knocking and waiting, he decided to try speaking with the son at Rambam. Maybe it would be easier to convey the information about Michoel Perl’s disappearance to him, and then to simply disappear himself.

Not that he had any idea where he was going. They surely would not take him back in the dorm, and he had burned his bridges with Dan and his friends. So what should he do? Turn himself in to the police? Maybe it was an idea. Let them deport him; oh well. But where could he go? He was burned in Sudbury, too. America, perhaps?

He came to Rambam, went to the Emergency Room, and asked to see Yosef Schorr. They told him, yes, sure, he’ll be right over, but the young man did not make an appearance.

Hinda put her bags down on the welcome mat and pulled out her key. Simi had spoken to her on the phone very politely and thanked her for the invitation. She’d asked Hinda not to overextend herself, please, because she was only coming for two days, and thank you so much in advance for everything, and please, don’t do anything, really.

Well, she couldn’t do very much today anymore, because she didn’t have any extra time. But she was able to prepare a hot, filling dinner. Dov would certainly be happy, and Simi…well, Simi could choose whether to be happy or not.

The kitchen awaited her, quiet and clean. She began to peel carrots for the soup. One, two, three, and then the phone rang. She went over and picked up in the middle of the third ring. “Hello?.”

Silence. A strange rustle, very weak. Something like a keyboard clacking. “Who is this?” a familiar voice suddenly asked tiredly. “Michoel!” she exclaimed. She didn’t know whether to sound happy or not; she was also afraid that perhaps his strange accusations would surface again.

“Yes, Hinda, how are you?”

As if nothing had happened at his door, that same day! “Baruch Hashem. How are you?”

“I think I’m alright,” he said. “I have some problems with my hands.”

“Your hands?” she asked. “Yes.” His voice was very heavy. “How…how are you?”

“We’re fine, baruch Hashem. I was worried about you, Uncle Michoel, and … the truth is, I’m a bit hurt by what happened when I visited you the last two times. Is everything alright?”

“Hurt…” He seemed to roll the word around his tongue, and his voice suddenly grew stronger. “Again you’re focused only on yourself, Hinda? How many times do I have to ask you to open your heart to others? You have a wonderful temperament; your mother, aleha hashalom, often told me that. So why are you so busy all the time with yourself? I’m telling you, go out a bit, visit homes. Speak to people, and see that there is life beyond the door of your house.

OUTSIDE THE BUBBLE

You realize—”

His voice suddenly faded out, and the call was cut off. Hinda didn’t know what to think about first: his slow, strange voice at the beginning of the conversation, or the mussar shmuess that she’d gotten at the end. What had he said? He had problems with his hands? What did he mean? Without realizing it, Hinda studied her own hands; her fingers were tinged orange from the carrots. But they were her hands, not Michoel’s. Unless he meant the compliment that he often gave her, that she was his right hand in all matters of the organization.

If so, then it was only one hand; why “hands”? And what kind of problems did he have? Was it a hint of sorts to his foolish suspicions?

She put the phone back on its base and took a deep breath, trying to remember what she had to do. She peeled an onion and cut it. She got up to the sink to wash it off. Tears began to flow; it was a very fresh onion. She felt a burning, sharp sensation in her throat.

Her memories also rushed in with searing sharpness; it hurt.

It was evening when he had come and offered her work, after she’d been dismissed from the Haifa Municipality in a round of job cuts. She had been happy, because the time she had spent out of work had clarified for her how narrow and insufficient her financial foundation was.

“I need you to collect money for the organization,” he’d said, drumming his fingers on the table. “It will be good for the organization, and for you. Not only because of the salary I will pay you, but because you also need to get out of yourself a bit. When you go from family to family, be pleasant, Hinda, for goodness’ sake! You are so immersed in yourself, and since Shmuel’s passing, you’ve become even worse!”

Michoel:

He cautiously went back to his bed. Daddy had left him a phone, and told him that he could call. They pressed a few numbers for him before, and all he had to do was dial the zero four for Haifa, and her number, which he remembered by heart. At first, he

did not remember her name, but when she answered the call, it came back to him. It was interesting to hear her live like that, as if she was here. Daddy had told him not to talk too much; he must not get excited. And he shouldn’t say where he was. He hadn’t said anything. He just wanted her to be less involved with herself.

Poor thing— it wasn’t nice to insult her. He was also very absorbed in himself a lot. He constantly thought only about his aching head and his strange hands. What right did he have to rebuke her like that?

Because he was all alone, and she had already gotten married a second time. Wait, had she gotten married yet or not? Her chassan had seemed rather nice; he had to tell her that, so she’d feel encouraged. Maybe he’d do that in their next conversation, if they would give him a phone. It wasn’t very nice of them not to give him the phone; a person needed to be able to call and speak to his family!

Maybe it wasn’t right to be thinking bad thoughts about Daddy. The thing was that for the last two days, he had been thinking that the man really was not his father. Why would he have thought it was Daddy? But he didn’t tell them anything. Apparently, a few days ago, when he’d been feeling awful, he’d gotten confused and called that man Daddy. Everyone around him was sure that he still thought that was the case, so they also called the man Daddy. “We’ll see what your daddy will say; he’ll be happy that your blood pressure is stable.” They really thought he would always believe that this non-Jew was his father? What a joke.

His father had a long, distinguished beard, and he took him to the park. Usually, Mommy took him to the park, but sometimes, Daddy did. The other children laughed, because Daddy and Mommy were much older than their parents. His parents even had a granddaughter; her name was Hinda. But she lived in Israel. And he had no one to play with. So he went to the park alone. The problem was that the children there would laugh at him, and would tell him that he had wrinkled hands. They would say he had the hands of an old man, and that he had caught his old parents’ old age.

Traits Happy People Have in Common

The pursuit of happiness is more a choice than something that occurs by happenstance, but there are verifiable traits that those who achieve happiness tend to share.

In 2010, in a study titled "Eavesdropping on Happiness," researchers equipped nearly 80 college students with an Electronically Activated Recorder (EAR), which randomly recorded snippets of ambient sounds taken while the participants went about their daily lives.

Every 12.5 minutes, the EAR recorded 30 seconds of sound, which allowed the researchers to figure out if the participant was alone or talking with others, and, in the latter case, whether the talk was small talk or more substantive, deeper conversation.

The study revealed intriguing insights into how conversations and small talk weigh in on happiness. What's more, in 2018, researchers followed up on the study, recording new snippets and learning even more about the intricacies of what makes people happy.

More Meaningful Conversations Make People Happier

Do happiness and well-being relate to the amount of small talk and meaningful conversations in your life? The 2010 study found a strong link, with less small talk and more substantive conversations linked to increased happiness.

For purposes of the study, small talk was defined as "uninvolved conversation of a banal nature," in which only trivial information was exchanged. A substantive conversation was defined as one in which meaningful information was exchanged. The researchers wondered:

"Is the happy life full of shallow, happy-go-lucky moments and trivial small talk or full of reflection and profound social encounters? Both notions exist — the happy ignoramus and the fulfilled deep thinker — but little is known about which everyday life is actually associated with greater happiness."

It turned out that less alone time and more time talking with others was linked to higher well-being. But happiness levels rose even higher when there was less small talk and more meaningful conversation. According to the study, compared to the unhappiest participants, the happiest participants spent 25 percent less time alone and 70 percent more time talking.

However, while talking, they had one-third as much small

talk and twice as many substantive conversations. It could be, then, that making an effort to have deeper conversations could be a key to increasing happiness:

"Together, the findings demonstrate that the happy life is social rather than solitary and conversationally deep rather than superficial … On one hand, well-being may be causally antecedent to having substantive interactions. Happy people may be 'social attractors' that facilitate deeper social encounters.

On the other hand, deep conversations may actually make people happier. Just like self-disclosure can instill a sense of intimacy in a relationship, deep conversations may instill a sense of meaning in the interaction partners. Therefore, our results raise the interesting possibility that happiness can be increased by facilitating substantive conversations."

Study: Small Talk Isn't as Meaningful

In a follow-up study, researchers used data from the original sample along with a larger, more diverse data set, which included breast cancer survivors and their partners, recently divorced adults and adults who meditate.

The study again revealed moderate associations between life satisfaction and the amount of alone time, conversation time and substantive conversations among the subjects. Meaningful conversation increased life satisfaction in virtually every group they studied, but small talk was less impactful, showing little effect one way or the other.

"We replicated that people who spend a lot of time alone are less satisfied with their lives and have lower well-being," study co-author Matthias Mehl, a professor of psychology at the University of Arizona, said in a news release. "People who spend more time interacting and have more meaningful, substantive conversations are more satisfied. The happy life is social, rather than solitary, and meaningfully so."

Further, while small talk wasn't beneficial, it wasn't decidedly negative either. The researchers even suggested it may have a place in leading to more

meaningful conversations. "We all understand that small talk is a necessary component to our social lives," Mehl said. "You cannot usually walk up to a stranger and jump right into a deep, existential conversation because of social norms."

Personality type didn't dictate the results, either, such that both introverts and extroverts stand to benefit from meaningful talks.

"We expected that personality might make a difference, for example that extroverts might benefit more from social interactions than introverts or that substantive conversations might be more closely linked to well-being for introverts than for extroverts, and were very surprised that this does not seem to be the case," researcher Anne Milek, a senior research scientist at the University of Zurich in Switzerland, said.

Positive Humor Helps Maintain Happiness

Along with regular, deep talks with friends and family, previous research has identified the four following personality traits as being associated with happiness:

· Extraversion

· Locus of control

· Self-esteem

· Optimism

Researchers writing in Europe's Journal of Psychology took the findings a step further, revealing that people with these four personality traits are happier because they use positive humor in their daily life.

"The happiness of 'happy people' does not depend on life circumstances. Rather, happy people seem to have personalities that allow them to find happiness even in the midst of adversity and challenging life conditions," the study noted. And humor, it turns out, makes an effective adaptive strategy to maintain happiness.

Not just any type of humor was beneficial, however. Self-defeating and aggressive humor styles were linked to less happiness, while positive, selfenhancing and affiliative humor did the opposite by helping people cope

with difficult circumstances. What's the difference in the styles of humor?

· Aggressive humor is used as a means of teasing, criticizing or manipulating others, and may be used as a way to demonstrate superiority over others

· Self-defeating humor may be used to avoid confronting problems or dealing with negative feelings, and may make fun of your own weaknesses

· Self-enhancing humor is used to maintain positive psychological wellbeing by means of distancing yourself from adversity

· Affiliative humor is used to entertain others, which helps enrich the quality of social relationships

A positive sense of humor, encompassing both self-enhancing and affiliative styles, is indeed another common thread among people who call themselves "happy." The researchers explained:

“Our findings suggest that people who are high in extraversion, internal locus of control, optimism and selfesteem have developed adaptive strategies of using humor in daily life, which in turn help make them happy. They experience greater happiness because they are better at finding strategies to regulate their emotions, and the habitual use of positive humor is one of those strategies.

Happy people may be adept at using positive humor styles as a means by which they frame or appraise life events to form positive, self-affirming views of the self. Indeed, people protect their psychological well-being by using self-enhancing humor as a means of reframing stressors in a more positive, light-hearted way."

Additional Indicators of Happiness

There's a close relationship between being kind and being happy. Happiness levels increase when people count their own acts of kindness for a week.

Further, kind people experience more happiness and have happier memories, with one study suggesting "happy people are more kind in the first place and … they can become even happier, kinder and more grateful following a

simple intervention [counting their acts of kindness]."

As for why kindness makes people happy, this is still being explored, but it's known that your brain produces feelgood hormones and neurotransmitters like serotonin when you're kind, and kindness helps you to build strong relationships with others, fostering positive feelings and stronger, more meaningful social interactions allaround.

Giving to others is also linked to happiness, and generosity is certainly one form of kindness. People who agreed to spend money on others made more generous choices as well as had stronger increases in self-reported happiness compared to those who agreed to spend money on themselves.

Those who agreed to give to others also had more interactions in brain regions linked to altruism and happiness. Like generosity, gratitude can also produce measurable effects on a number of systems in your body, leading to better sleep, more positive emotions and more, including beneficial effects on:

Mood neurotransmitters (serotonin and norepinephrine)

Inflammatory and immune systems (cytokines)

Reproductive hormones

Stress hormones (cortisol)

Social bonding hormones (oxytocin)

Blood pressure and cardiac and EEG rhythms

Cognitive and pleasure related neurotransmitters (dopamine)

Blood sugar

Sleep May Be an Overlooked Part of Being Happy

Most research into happiness has focused on its social ties, but research has also found that people who sleep well are more satisfied with life, even

after controlling for other factors like personality.

While sleep has long been linked to mood, researchers also suggested that people who sleep poorly are more likely to have a zero-sum view of happiness, which causes people to engage in more social comparisons and savor their positive experiences less, ultimately leading to less happiness.

"As many societies become more competitive and market-oriented, sleep is easily regarded as a waste of time (and money). However, sacrificed sleep may create a vicious cycle of making the world appear as a zerosum competition, which aggravates interpersonal stress," researchers wrote in Frontiers in Psychology, adding:

"What constitutes a good life? Many people in modern society may shove a 'good sleep' below other priorities, such as high status or income. However, our study suggests that this inconspicuous daily routine not only restores the body, but also elevates the mind's view of life." Even the Happiest People Have Negative Moods Occasionally

Yet another study looking into the shared traits of very happy people found those at the highest level of happiness were highly social and had stronger romantic and social relationships than less happy people.

In this case, the happiest people did not exercise more than the less happy people. Nor did they participate in religious activities more often or experience more "good events." However, they did tend to be more extraverted, more agreeable and less neurotic, and having good social relations was a necessary component.

It's important to note, too, that while the happiest people experienced positive (though not ecstatic) feelings most of the time, they also had negative moods on occasion. In short,

it's completely natural to feel down sometimes, but happy people have ways of coping with negative emotions so they're able to turn them around and maintain a bright outlook overall.

Try This To Be Happier

If you want to be happier, research suggests putting effort into your social relationships, particularly nurturing those that provide deep, meaningful conversations, will pay off. Likewise, be kind and keep a running tally of your acts of kindness, no matter how big or small.

Be sure to get quality shut-eye each night, and practice living in the present moment, not focused on past regrets or future worries. Ultimately, however, the social component of happiness cannot be ignored. If you're feeling lonely or socially isolated, the following strategies can help you to make meaningful connections with others in your community, which will ultimately increase your level of happiness:

Join a group that interests you

Volunteer for a cause you believe in Enroll in a class to learn a new skill or hobby

Create rituals of connection, such as calling a certain friend every Monday

Join a gym or sign up for a fitness class so you can exercise with others

Frequent local shops and markets, where you can build relationships with shop owners and other regular customers

Talk to strangers during your daily commute, at the grocery store and while taking a walk

Consider adopting a pet, which can provide companionship and a source of unconditional love, as well as act as an icebreaker socially

Move to be closer to your friends and family

Attend services or support groups

Recap: The Investor gloats over his success in burying Dr. Bloom to his chief financial officer Kevin. Jack reads the newspaper reports of Dr. Bloom’s downfall and grits his teeth, as there’s nothing he can do.

Avrumi tells Esther Mindy that the police have a potential suspect. He also tells her that his siblings are planning a beautiful Shabbos at his parents’ house, and that his sister Bruchie called him to ask for contributions.

“Mommy, I don’t know what to do,” Esther Mindy said as soon as her mother picked up the phone.

“Why, didn’t he like the supper?” her mother asked worriedly.

“No, not supper,” Esther Mindy said, and this time there was a definite edge of a wail in her voice. “But Mommy-“

“What is it, sweetie?”

“My mother-in-law doesn’t like me anymore,” Esther Mindy said, and she didn’t mind that she sounded like a whiny two-year-old, that tears suddenly filled her eyes and overflowed.

“Why, what’s going on? Does this have to do with the break-in?”

“A little,” Esther Mindy said. “I think she didn’t like that I was there right afterwards when she was still in so much shock. But even before that, on Shabbos already she was making

nasty comments to me. I didn’t know what hit me!”

“Nasty comments?! Why in the world would she make nasty comments to you?”

“She’s upset that I’m not classy enough,” Esther Mindy said in a small voice. “One day I decided to wear gym shoes to work and she saw me in the grocery and she was horrified. But even before that, I think, she didn’t like my job, you know, and she doesn’t like my personal shopper, and then she thinks that my clothes are too much…I don’t think I can do anything about any of this! She’s just looking for things to criticize about me! She’s jealous that I married her son and now Avrumi’s not only talking to her!”

Her mother listened quietly, sympathetically. She should have known this would be an issue. As much as she’d tried curbing Esther Mindy’s outlandish tastes and ideas, Esther Mindy was unstoppable. And

away from her mother’s watchful gaze, she’d surely stepped further out of the boundaries she was used to keeping so carefully.

On the other hand, maybe Esther Mindy’s mother-in-law really was being somewhat irrational?

“Tell me what she says to you,” she prompted Esther Mindy.

“It’s not only what she says,” Esther Mindy qualified. “Like, Sunday morning after the police left, we ordered breakfast. So I ordered from Coffee Beans and I asked them to send sweet potato cheesecake. Because it’s really good and Avrumi really liked it! But you should have heard my mother-in-law when we offered it to her! She was like, ‘Who makes sweet potato cheesecake?’

As if she was asking, ‘Who puts gunpowder in their chicken soup?’”

Mrs. Wasser chuckled.

“She made this face at me as if I came from the garbage dump,” Esther Mindy said.

“Oh, Esther Mindy,” her mother said. “You’re probably taking it too much

“I know, but Ma, what am I, married a little longer than a month?! It’s not normal that she’s already being the critical mother-in-law!”

Mrs. Wasser sighed. “Esther Mindy, you can charm your way out of everything. I’m sure you’ll win your mother-in-law back just as quickly.”

“The problem is,” Esther Mindy said, “that I don’t want to win her back anymore. I want to show her that I’m not here just for her to show off. I’m my own person. You chap what I mean?”

“Of course, I do,” Mrs. Wasser said. “Even though, I told Avrumi that I would go along, usually. Just when something’s really important to me, like my job that I work in every day, I want to be able to do what I want.”

“That’s my Esther Mindy!” her mother said approvingly.

Esther Mindy heaved a sigh that bordered on teary. “I thought when I get married, the show’s gonna be over. I guess it’s going to continue full force. What should I make for dessert, Mommy?”

“Dessert for what?”

“My in-laws are eating together this Shabbos. Everyone’s making something so that my mother-in-law gets a break. Bruchi called Avrumi to ask what I could make, and I offered to make dessert.”

“That’s brave of you, Esther Mindy… dessert, hmm. I just saw a recipe that had really good salted caramel taffy on chocolate. I’m going to go check it up.”

“Thanks, Ma. Though honestly, I feel like making that chocolate cake with

jalapeno peppers as an ingredient. Remember when I tried that?”

“Of course I do! I think it actually tasted good, didn’t it?”

“It was heaven! Probably way better than these salted caramel thingies.”

“For some reason, though, everyone’s doing salted caramel these days, and not jalapeno peppers.”

“Oh well. The world just doesn’t have good enough taste.”

The two of them shared a chuckle.

“Here, I found it. It’s mini chocolate tarts with salted caramel toffee on top. Sounds good?”

“Yeah. Hope my mother-in-law likes it!”

Esther Mindy took down the recipe, then sat chewing her pen for a moment. Then, coming to a resolution, she picked up her phone again.

“Hi?” Her sister-in-law Bruchi picked up sounding wary.

“Hi, Bruchi! How are you? I wanted to tell you what a good idea I think it is to have this Shabbos with the whole family together. Mommy’s really going to appreciate it.”

Despite herself, Bruchi was warmed by the compliments. “Yes, Mommy loves when we all get together,” she said.

“So I told Avrumi that I’d be happy to make dessert! Something heaven. I had this recipe for mini chocolate tarts with salted caramel toffee that I wanted to try out anyway. Is dessert taken yet?”

“No,” Bruchi replied honestly. “Mini tarts sounds so elegant, thank you!”

“It’s my pleasure,” Esther Mindy said with carefully affected carelessness. “Thanks again for putting this Shabbos together.”

Bruchi hung up the phone with a bemused expression. Her youngest sister-in-law definitely did not lack

for guts, or for likeability. It was a pity her mother had lost sight of it. And that she’d stopped reminding her mother of it.

Even if Esther Mindy was the only one brave enough to do what she wanted to do when it contradicted Mrs. Grossman’s ideas.

Maybe Bruchi was even the slightest bit jealous of her.

“You know, maybe this isn’t the right thing to do,” Leah told her sister Bruchi as they planned their Shabbos get-together on the phone.

“What?”

“This Shabbos. You heard that Tatty had to back out of the deal?”

“What could he do? These people are criminals. They’re ready to hurt Tatty’s family if he doesn’t pull out.”

“I know,” Leah said. “Of course he had to pull out. But you realize that it means this Dr. Bloom will need to declare bankruptcy.”

“Really?” Bruchi asked. She hadn’t followed that part of the story so carefully.

“Yeah. It means that all of his patients that he was treating, some who were seeing positive results, aren’t going to be able to get his treatment anymore. And for most of them, this is their last hope.”

Bruchi sighed. “It’s sad, but really, what can we do about it? Like you said, Tatty really tried to give them funding. He was forced to stop.”

“Right. I’m just wondering if maybe this isn’t the right time to have a party at their house, when all those people are nebach suffering.”

Bruchi was silent for a moment.

“I think Mommy really needs this,” she said. “It’s something we need to do for her.”

“I just wish there was something we could do for those poor patients, too.”

“It feels like a hundred years since I was here last,” Raizy said as soon as Gila Batsheva sat down.

Gila Batsheva looked up at her, smiling. “Why’s that?”

“So much happened since then!” Raizy said. “Remember last time I was here, my mother called in in the middle of the session?”

Gila Batsheva nodded. “It wasn’t even my mother. It was my brother. He was using my mother’s phone because my mother couldn’t call herself.”

“What happened to your mother?”

Gila Batsheva asked, sounding concerned.

“She was in shock. A guy broke into my parents’ house in the middle of the night, and my father was away on a business trip. Sounds like my father knew that it might happen, so he had a security guy watching the house. The security guy didn’t manage to stop the burglar, though, and my mother fainted when she heard him climbing the steps.”

“What a scare!” Gila Batsheva said. “Is she okay now?”

“Yes, she’s fine. But meanwhile, my father found out that the entire reason he went on this business trip was a scam. And the police are trying to track down the guy who broke in, but they can’t find him. It was a crazy situation. I spoke to my mother right afterwards, you can’t imagine how she sounded.”

“What did she sound like?”

“She sounded like a shadow. Scared, and weak and unsure of herself.

So not my mother! She was so vulnerable, all of a sudden.”

Raizy cast her mind back to the short conversation she’d had with her mother on the day after the attack.

“It was a shock to see that yes, she’s human, and yes, she’s not a rock.”

Gila Batsheva nodded. “It’s so not like what you’re used to your mother being.”

“Yes, exactly! Afterwards, my husband joked that we should have recorded it, so that the next time she yells at me I would remember that she’s not really so scary.”

“Actually, I think that’s incredibly smart,” Gila Batsheva said. Raizy looked at her, surprised.

“We can’t quite record it anymore,” she pointed out.

“It’s not the recording per se,” Gila Batsheva said. “What’s so helpful for you to remember is that behind the critical façade is a scared, vulnerable person. Whenever she tries to put you down, force you to be someone you’re not and is upset when you can’t live up to it, you can remember this.”

“You mean, I should remember that she’s not so powerful, really?” Raizy asked slowly.

“That too, but more than that, realize that the very fact of her needing to control you comes from a place of true vulnerability. She’s afraid. She’s afraid of losing her image, afraid of losing people’s respect that she works so hard every day to earn. Can you see how vulnerable she must feel all the time, needing to live up to the standards she’s put up for

herself, scared that either she or her children will fail the test?”

Raizy listened intently, nodding.

“It’s sort of hard to think of it that way when she’s telling me how awful I am for embarrassing her,” Raizy said with a wince, “but maybe now that I really saw how she’s so human, it’ll be easier for me.”

“Exactly,” Gila Batsheva said approvingly. “You know, maybe you can even, someday, pity her. She’s so caught up in her standards and must-haves she doesn’t even have the space to simply enjoy her lovely children.”

Raizy nodded again. “I never thought of it that way either, but it really is true,” she said thoughtfully. “Especially because of what happened this past Shabbos after the break-in.”

“What happened?”

“All my siblings decided to get together on Shabbos and eat the meals in my parents’ house together. Sort of as a solidarity thing? Also, they made all the food and took care of the décor so my mother could get a break.”

Gila Batsheva nodded. “Everyone was pitching in, so I also tried to help, from here. I sent pictures of different décor options I’ve seen and tried to be part of the brainstorming.” She blinked. “When I spoke to my mother about it, she told me it was okay, Bruchi would figure it out without my help.”

Raizy grimaced at the memory. “But then, right afterwards, I got a call from Avrumi. He’s my brother who just got married.”

CRISPY COATED BAGUETTES WITH PULLED BEEF

Simple technique; elaborate results!

PULLED BEEF:

2-3 lb 2nd cut brisket

1 cup apricot jam

½ cup BBQ sauce

2 Tbsp soy sauce

2 Tbsp orange juice

2 Tbsp ketchup

2 Tbsp mustard

COATED BAGUETTES:

4 baguettes (the soft fluffy type)

2 eggs, beaten

1 cup cornflake crumbs

1 tsp salt

1 tsp onion powder

1 tsp garlic powder

PREPARE PULLED BEEF:

1. Preheat oven to 275°. Line a 9x13 pan with parchment paper. Place beef in pan and sprinkle generously with salt and pepper.

2. Combine remaining ingredients in a small bowl and pour over the meat. Cover with another piece of parchment paper and seal very tightly with foil.

3. Bake for 6 hours. Remove from oven and pull, using two forks. Return meat to sauce, cover and bake an additional hour.

PREPARE THE BAGUETTES:

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Grease a 9x13 pan and set aside.

2. Cut the ends off the baguettes. Then cut the baguettes in half.

3. Prepare 2 bowls for dipping: Place beaten eggs in one bowl. Combine cornflake crumbs and spices in the 2nd bowl.

3. Grasp the baguette halves on the 2 ends and dip in egg, turning to coat. (The top and bottom do not get coated.) Then roll the baguettes in the cornflake crumbs to coat evenly.

4. Stand the coated baguettes in the 9x13 pan and spray generously with oil spray.

5. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until crispy.

TO ASSEMBLE:

Stand a baguette in the center of a plate, top with pulled beef and caramelized onions or desired toppings.

Note: You will have extra pulled beef, which can be frozen for a later use. Defrost overnight in the fridge, then reheat.

CRUNCHY WONTON NUGGETS

Forget corn flakes and rice crispies, these cutlets have got serious crunch!

1 lb chicken cutlets, cut into nuggets

2 bags Kravy wonton chips

Batter: 1 cup flour

¼ cup cornstarch

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp paprika

¾ cup + 2 Tbsp water, divided

1. Combine dry batter ingredients in a medium sized bowl and mix to combine. Add ¾ cup water and stir. If batter is still very thick add the remaining 2 Tbsp of water. Stir in chicken nuggets to coat.

2. Coarsely crush the wonton chips (You can use your hands to crush them in the bag they came in).

Transfer to a shallow bowl.

3. Heat a generous amount of oil in a large frying pan.

4. Remove chicken nuggets from the batter, one at a time, and roll in the crushed wonton chips to coat.

5. Fry over low-medium heat for a few minutes per side until nicely golden. Use tongs to flip the chicken.

6. Transfer fried nuggets to a paper towel lined plate.

7. Serve with Kravy wonton sauce.

MAIMONIDES MEDICAL CENTER: MORE THAN JUST A HOSPITAL

About five years ago, I was making my rounds in Maimonides Medical Center and I walked into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (“NICU”). I saw a woman crying, and she said her baby was born prematurely at only 23 weeks and only weighed one pound. She wasn’t sure if her child would survive. I said, “Don’t worry, one day your child is going to give me a good kick in the leg.”

A few months ago, as I was walking down 13th Avenue, a boy ran over to me and gave me a strong kick in the leg. It hurt. I thought to myself, who is this child? Then I saw a mother come running towards me and she said, “Douglas, this is my son who was born in the Maimonides NICU. You promised me that he would give you a good kick in the leg. Here he is. Thank you for everything.” For me, this story represents everything that is special about Maimonides and why I’ve dedicated my career to it for the last 47 years.

As Jews, we know that we are responsible for one another, and that bikkur cholim is one of the most essential mitzvot. I was born and raised in Boro Park. I grew up in a loving home with my brother, parents and grandparents. When I was ten years old, my grandmother, racked with Parkinsons, held my hand and said to me, “When you grow up, I want you to help people.” Her words stayed with me, and I am fortunate that as an outreach liaison for Maimonides, I get to spend each day honoring my grandmother’s wishes by helping the community that raised me.

It is hard for me to believe that I have been working at Maimonides for nearly half a century, baruch hashem. While my focus is on the emotional social, and cultural needs of patients and their families, I have learned that this is everyone’s priority at Maimonides. I am amazed at how well the doctors, nurses and all team members approach the religious needs and sensitivities of the Jewish community. They know that their work is about so much more than medical care; it is understanding

how the community copes with illness and death, respecting the particular dietary needs of each patient and understanding the importance of modesty and Shabbos restrictions. I have also seen the number of patient representatives grow tremendously. Their job is to interpret, mediate and expedite matters between patients and doctors, nurses and everyone else. We know everyone deserves prompt care, attention and advocacy, and we are constantly striving to improve the patient experience

Maimonides is much more than medical care and much more than just a hospital. We are a home away from home when it’s needed. A few years ago, a frail, terminally ill mother was at Maimonides. She knew she had very little time left, and she made one final wish: she wanted to be at the wedding of her engaged daughter.

Miraculously, we were able to arrange a wedding ceremony and small reception on the sixth floor of Maimonides with just a few days of planning. We arranged the cantor, the chuppah and a violin player. We styled the mother’s makeup and pushed her down the aisle in a stretcher. Although she was greatly infirmed, her heart was full. She profusely thanked us for the opportunity to celebrate with her daughter and family on a joyous day. Seven hours later, she passed away peacefully.

And we have held Bar Mitzvot for pediatric patients, including a boy who had his appendix taken out on the day of his Bar Mitzvah. We have held Bris and Pidyan Haben for babies that still needed in-patient care. We have also overseen numerous vocational training programs and volunteer activities for members of the HASC Center.

As an Orthodox Jew, I am proud of how Maimonides is particularly sensitive to end-of-life care. To my knowledge, it is the only hospital to employ a rabbi who is a qualified posek and is uniquely sensitive to families’ choices concerning end-of-life treatment. Community rabbonim are consulted in regard to the utilization

of feeding tubes and ongoing medical treatment for elderly or terminal patients, with the utmost respect for halachic demands. A few years ago, a Rabbi of a large yeshiva insisted that he be transferred from a Manhattan hospital to Maimonides. He came here because, like many other Jews, he knew his wishes would be respected and carried out in accordance with rabbinical law. I believe it is impossible to find another hospital that so strictly adheres to halachic custom in the way that Maimonides does.

Indeed, in the spirit of bikkur cholim, Maimonides CEO Ken Gibbs made every effort imaginable to ensure that visitation and religious practices continued unabated during the pandemic, including the ability of friends and family to help patients with tefillin, prayers and rabbinical support. And like so many members of Maimonides staff, he lived in these hallways every day. We should all be grateful that the entire team of healthcare workers at Maimonides helped Brooklyn get through the darkest days of the pandemic, sacrificing their own health to serve our community.

While Maimonides faces certain structural challenges, many of which are rooted in how our healthcare system is organized and funded, we can and are striving every day to be better. But more often than not, I have witnessed extraordinary medical and patient care during my tenure carried out by some of the best and the brightest in health care.

The amount of pride I have for Maimonides can only be exceeded by its own excellence and my love for the people I call family who help make it the world-class institution that it is.

AWhat is acid reflux? Your stomach normally produces acid to help with the digestion of food and to kill germs. This acid is corrosive so your body produces a natural mucous barrier that protects the lining of the stomach from being worn out. In some people this barrier may have broken down allowing the acid to damage the stomach, causing an ulcer. In others, there may be a problem with the muscular band at the top of the stomach (the sphincter) that keeps the stomach tightly closed. This may allow the acid to escape and irritate the esophagus. This is called acid reflux, which can cause heartburn or inflammation of the esophagus. This is the intense burning and painful sensation that you are dealing with daily. It is literally like acid splashing back into your esophagus. True to their name, antacids work by lessening the acids in your stomach. There are three different types of antacids:

Acid neutralizers (tums)- these contain salts that temporarily neutralized the gastric acids already in the stomach. This gives immediate but short-term relief.

Histamine antagonist (Pepcid AC)- this reduces acid production by affecting the cells of the stomach. This is taken before a meal and can last in your system for up to 12 hours.

Proton pump inhibitors or PPI- These are the strongest antacids. It can take a few days for them to take effect but can suppress symptoms for 24 hours, making this a popular option for people suffering from acid reflux. Prevacid, Prilosec and Nexium are common examples of PPIs.

Let’s understand why PPIs in particular can be so unhealthy and even dangerous when used long-term. Because reduced stomach acidity can greatly ease your pain, it also means that your food will now not be digested properly. How is heartburn- something that affects your esophagus connected to the bacteria in your gut and in your intestines? Stomach acids are very, very acidic and bitter. They are specifically there to make your gut an unwelcome place for creepy crawly bacterial invaders. We now know that the very bitter stomach acids specifically protect our intestines! The acidity actually plays a preventative role in the overgrowth of bacteria! By taking acid-blocking medications for reflux, you are in essence (indirectly) allowing your stomach and gut to repopulate with the bugs that we don’t want in our system. Taking PPIs often, reduces the protective quality of the stomach, and bacteria that would have been destroyed can now make their way into your insides and build colonies. This is otherwise referred to as SIBO- small intestinal bacterial overgrowth…. So, we are creating a new issue by trying to help ourselves with an old issue. These new colonies are now creating gas. And what does this gas now do to you? It forces the

stomach acids back up to your esophagus, once again causing a chronic form of heartburn called…. reflux. So, the supplement that you have been taking for heartburn can actually worsen your heartburn over time.

So, the million-dollar question - how can you help yourself naturally?

Change your sleeping position: Some people experience reflux symptoms during the night, which can affect sleep quality and make it more difficult to fall asleep. Changing the position that you sleep in by elevating the head of your bed could help reduce symptoms of acid reflux and improve sleep quality. Also, don’t eat close to bedtime. Avoid eating within the 3 hours before you go to sleep.

Eat smaller meals: Reflux usually gets worse after meals and larger meals make it worse. Eating smaller meals more often is recommended.

Weight loss: Excess abdominal fat puts tremendous pressure on the diaphragm. The diaphragm is a muscle located above your stomach. Normally, the diaphragm naturally strengthens the lower esophageal sphincter, which prevents excessive amounts of stomach acid from leaking up into the esophagus. However, if you have excess fat, the pressure in your abdomen may become so high that the lower esophageal sphincter gets pushed upward, away from the diaphragm’s support. Weight loss in this instance can really reduce your heartburn pain.

Limit alcohol: Many people feel intense heartburn after having a drink. Limit alcohol consumption.

Limit coffee: Many people feel worse after drinking coffee. If you feel like this bothers you, limit your caffeine intake.

Sodas and carbonated beverages: The gas bubbles can prompt you to feel very uncomfortable. Try to avoid these drinks altogether.

Citric juices bother many people as it has a high acidic content and it can irritate the lining of the esophagus.

Limit high-fat foods: Fried and fatty foods can be a huge trigger for acid reflux. Try to avoid eating these foods.

Collateral Damage

Call me Mr. Naïve and I won’t dis pute it. It’s the most dignified expla nation I can give for my awful expe rience.

It started almost a year ago, when my 17-year-old cousin approached me with questions and complaints. I was his successful, ehrliche relative learning in kollel for many years. I was the eloquent, Torah-versed cousin who could dig him out of his confusion.

That’s what he thought.

I was glad to help and spent many hours schmoozing with Boruch about emunah; about what it means to be a Yid, to serve Hashem without compromise. I expounded on a top ic, Boruch challenged me, and I sought more references to back up my claims.

We were going strong.

I can’t pinpoint when the winds shifted. What was the first thing Boruch showed me on his nifty little device? It couldn’t have been any thing terrible, just some interesting tidbit that he thought would catch my attention.

It did. As did the next ‘tidbit’ and the next video clip, time after time. I didn’t think I was doing anything questionable, let alone wrong. It was all par for the course. Yet suddenly in my efforts to forge a solid rela tionship with Boruch, so that I could draw him closer to Yiddishkeit, I my self was going in the wrong direc tion.

“Hey, Mendy, you have to see this one,” Boruch would chirp with his friendly manner.

I would quickly lean over, get a glimpse of the latest and greatest, and the moment would be over and forgotten.

Except that it wasn’t over and cer

tainly not forgotten. What can I tell you? All those speeches and warn ings about the power of technology? It’s all true. It played itself out, scene by torturous scene, in my life.

Within a short time, I was already asking Boruch, “So, anything inter esting out there? Tell me what’s up.”

My meaningful glance in the di rection of his iPad made it very clear what I was looking for. And Boruch obliged. He showed and clicked and scrolled, giving me access to the worldwide web.

“I’m going away for a couple of weeks,” Boruch told me one morn ing. “Here, you can have the iPad un til I get back.”

I didn’t even blink. I just took the device and stuck that little pock et-sized Yetzer Hara into its cozy new home, right near my heart. I was hooked.

I don’t know who hung up that sign in a small shul near my home, but it saved my life. Literally.

I walked into shul a few weeks af ter the iPad lodged itself in my life, and I saw a cute little boy peeking out from a life-sized poster. His chin was cupped in his two pudgy hands and he looked despondent. Two sets of hands were noticeable, ostensibly those of his parents, and they were twiddling their fingers over their phones’ keypads.

“If only I were a Smartphone,” I read the boy’s plaintive thoughts. “Then they would hold me and play with me all day.”

Ouch.

That boy was my son. Those hands on the keypad…were my hands. Reality hit me in the face with such force that I nearly stum bled backward. With my eyes squinting painfully to keep the tears at bay, I grabbed the moment to do what I should have done months ear lier.

I got rid of the iPad.

And I got my life and family back.
