In the first diet/fitness genre written with a kosher perspective, a NYC based registered dietitian explains about Living a Real Life with Real Food: How to Get Healthy, Lose Weight, And Stay Energized the Kosher Way.
She provides a fresh, kosher perspective on the topic of eating real foods by tying the basics back to the biblical days when processed food was non-existent, food was provided by Hashem and prepared daily.
For your knowledge base: How many people eat kosher in the US?
Here are some surprising stats:
• The number of kosher consumers in the US: 12,100,000
• Percentage of Americans who either regularly or occasionally purchase kosher products because they are kosher (i.e. kosher hotdog): 21%
• Number of year round Kosher Jewish Consumers: 1,300,000
• Total Number of Muslims and Other religions eating kosher products: 3,500,000
• Number of Kosher Products in US Supermarkets: 125,000
• Number of Kosher Producing Companies and plants: 10,650
One of your most basic health principles is to eat real food. This will radically reduce your exposure to the tens of thousands of chemicals added to processed foods, most of which are not even on the label.
Many are still under the illusion that whole grains are good for you, but while this may have held true for your grandparent's generation, it's not true today. The thing that people tend to forget is that virtually all grain products you buy today have gone through industrial processing.
Grains have also been altered through time, and growing methods differ significantly from even a generation or two ago. We also
prepare grains differently these days.
Sprouted whole organic grains may be the lone exception to our recommendation to avoid grains, but all those whole grain loaves of bread, whole grain pastas, and whole grain cereals — they're actually processed foods, and are best replaced.
Some nutritionists include the following in a recently published list of foods packed with health-promoting compounds like antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals known to play a role in longevity.
Basic of basics: drink plenty of pure water. The single most powerful intervention you can make for your health would be to stop drinking sodas and juices, and replace them with pure water.
Staying well-hydrated can also counteract many common ills, from minimizing wrinkles to reducing your risk for blood clots. Severe dehydration has even been shown to reduce your cognitive function and performance to a similar degree as alcohol, making you more prone to car accidents and other mishaps.
Certain types of tea and coffee can also have health-promoting benefits. Green tea, for example, has been shown to lower your risk of heart disease and cancer when consumed at least three times a week.
Drinking four to five cups of green tea daily has also been shown to promote weight loss. Participants who drank this amount of green tea for four months lost an average of two pounds more than those who didn't drink green tea.
Coffee — while it could do more harm than good if consumed in excess or with added sugar, artificial sweeteners, milk, or creamers — also has an impressive list of redeeming qualities, including longevity.
Research suggests coffee can lower your risk for type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, dementia, stroke, and certain cancers. It also helps increase the metabolic activity and/or numbers of beneficial Bifidobacteria in your gastrointestinal tract.
The caveat here is to make sure your coffee is organic, as conventional coffee tends to be heavily sprayed with pesticides. Ideally use whole-bean black coffee — the darker the roast, the better. Roasted coffees are higher in neuroprotective agents than green (unroasted) coffees.
One study found that dark roast coffee restored blood levels of the antioxidants vitamin E and glutathione more effectively than light roast coffee. The dark roast also led to a significant body weight reduction in preobese volunteers, whereas the lighter roast did not.
Another beverage that can do harm or good depending on the quantity and quality is red wine, which has been linked to health benefits such as reduced blood pressure, cancer prevention, and anti-aging.
Resveratrol is the primary ingredient in red wine that gives it its health promoting qualities, and according to some views, there are healthier sources for this potent free radical scavenger than wine, considering all alcoholic beverages also have a neurotoxic influence.
Whole foods, such as muscadine grapes, for example, are a better choice. Muscadine grapes have the highest concentration of resveratrol in nature because of their extra thick skins and numerous seeds where it is concentrated.
Recent research shows that resveratrol, taken in concentrated doses, may slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease. According to these findings, resveratrol appears to reduce the buildup of amyloid-beta in the
brain by shuttling the protein to other areas in the body.
One large-scale, 30-yearlong study found that people who regularly ate one ounce of nuts at least seven times per week were 20 percent less likely to die for any reason, compared to those who avoided nuts in their diet.
Eating nuts at least five times a week corresponded to a 29 percent reduction in mortality risk due to heart disease; a 24 percent reduction for respiratory disease; and an 11 percent reduction for cancer.
Raw nuts are an excellent source of healthy fats, which you need more of, once you start cutting non-vegetable carbs out of your diet. They also contain plenty of valuable vitamins and minerals, and make for an overall great snack when energy levels are flagging.
All nuts are not necessarily created equal though. Favorite nuts are macadamia and pecans, as they provide the highest amount of healthy fat while being on the lower end in terms of carbs and protein.
Berries of all kinds contain concentrated amounts of disease-fighting phytochemicals known to boost your immunity, prevent cancer, and protect your heart.
They're also lower in sugar than many fruits so they're less likely to destabilize your insulin levels, making them another great contender for a quick guiltless snack.
Then there's chocolate. Provided you stick with dark chocolate, gut bacteria will break down and ferment its components, turning them into anti-inflammatory compounds that benefit your health.
In fact, research has linked dark chocolate
consumption to over 40 distinct health benefits, including longevity. As noted in the featured article:
"A 1999 Harvard study of 8,000 men discovered that those who ate chocolate as many as three times a month lived a year longer than those who didn't."
The closer your cocoa is to its natural raw state, the higher its nutritional value; ideally, your chocolate or cocoa should be consumed raw (cacao).
Besides nuts, three other foods that rate among the highest in terms of healthy fats include salmon, avocado, and coconut oil.
• Wild caught Alaskan salmon: Research suggests that eating oily fish once or twice a week may increase your lifespan by more than two years, and reduce your risk of dying from cardiovascular disease by 35 percent.
If you want to maximize health benefits from fish, avoid farmed fish, particularly farmed salmon, and even more specifically genetically engineered farmed salmon — especially if you're seeking to improve your omega-3 to omega-6 ratio.
Look for "Alaskan salmon," and "sockeye salmon," as Alaskan sockeye is not allowed to be farmed. Canned varieties are an inexpensive alternative to pricier salmon steaks.
• Avocado: Avocados, which are actually classified as a fruit, are rich in monounsaturated fat that is easily burned for energy. They also provide close to 20 essential health-boosting nutrients, including potassium, vitamin E, B-vitamins, and folic acid.
Clinical research has revealed a number of health effects of avocado consumption, linking it to reduced risk for cardiovascular
disease and diabetes, as well as appetite suppression and improved weight management. It also enhances your body's absorption of other nutrients.
Researchers have found it can help optimize cholesterol levels within as little as one week, and contains compounds that appear to inhibit and destroy oral cancer cells, along with others that protect against liver damage. Besides eating it "as is," you can increase your avocado consumption by using it as a fat replacement in baking; add it to soups, dessert whips, and countless other recipes.
• Coconut oil: Half of the fat content in coconut oil is lauric acid that your body converts into monolaurin, which has antiviral, anti-bacterial, and anti-protozoa properties. The medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil also produce a whole host of health benefits, including stimulating your metabolism.
MCFAs are also immediately converted to energy — a function usually served in the diet by simple carbohydrates — so like avocados, coconut oil is an ideal replacement for unhealthy grain carbs. It can be added to smoothies, or used in virtually any dish calling for butter or oil. When it comes to cooking, coconut oil is ideal as it can tolerate high heat without oxidizing.
Vegetables contain an array of antioxidants and other disease-fighting compounds. Some plant chemicals can reduce inflammation and eliminate carcinogens, while others regulate the rate at which cells reproduce, get rid of old cells and maintain DNA. Leafy greens are basic staples with notso-basic health benefits.
According to a health article, eating one cup of cooked greens per day cut middleaged people's risk of dying in the next four
years in half, compared to those who didn't eat any leafy greens. Other power players in the vegetable kingdom include the following:
• Broccoli contains dozens, maybe even hundreds, of super-nutrients that support optimal health, including immuneboosting and anti-cancer compounds. Eating broccoli raw, as opposed to cooked, will help protect its nutrients. Broccoli sprouts are an even more nutritionally potent way to enjoy broccoli.
• Sprouts may offer some of the highest levels of nutrition available, including vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and enzymes that help protect against free radical damage. Many of the benefits of sprouts relate to the fact that plants contain more concentrated amounts of nutrients in their initial phase of growth.
Sunflower seed and pea shoots, for example, are both typically about 30 times more nutritious than organic vegetables, and are among the highest in protein.
• Fermented vegetables: Almost everyone has damaged gut flora these days, unless you're part of the minority that eats a strict organic whole foods diet and avoids antibiotics. Fermented vegetables are one of the most palatable fermented foods that can provide you with a robust dose of beneficial bacteria, which are critically important for optimal physical and mental health.
Fermented foods are also potent detoxifiers, capable of drawing out a wide range of toxins and heavy metals, including some pesticides.
• Tomatoes are one of the best dietary sources of lycopene, which has been shown to have anti-cancerous activity, and may reduce your risk of stroke. Just remember to consume your tomatoes, whether raw or cooked, with some type of fat, such as olive oil, since lycopene is a fat-soluble nutrient.
• Cabbage is actually among the most potent medicinal foods available, and including cabbage as a regular part of your diet, at least two or three times a week, may offer many significant health benefits. It contains compounds that help prevent cancer, as well as high concentrations of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. To obtain the most nutrients from your cabbage, eat it raw, lightly cooked, or fermented.
According to a 14-year long Harvard study, eating a bowl of quinoa a day may lower your risk of premature death from diseases like cancer, heart disease, respiratory disease, and diabetes by 17 percent. While it's often used as a grain replacement, quinoa is technically a seed, related to chard and spinach.
It's high in healthy fats and antioxidants, and is a complete protein, meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids. Just be sure to soak it for a few minutes, or ideally overnight, before you cook it.
Last but not least, herbs and spices of all kinds are potent superfoods, so go ahead and spice things up! Garlic is well-known for its healing powers, and studies have demonstrated more than 150 beneficial health effects of garlic, including a reduced risk for heart disease, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure, and various cancers.
Keep in mind that garlic must be used fresh to give you optimal health benefits. To stimulate the process that catalyzes the formation of allicin — which is responsible for many of its therapeutic effects — compress a
fresh clove with a spoon prior to swallowing it, or put it through your juicer with other veggies.
The running thread linking a wide variety of common health problems — from obesity and diabetes to heart disease and cancer — is chronic inflammation. The key to reducing chronic inflammation in your body starts with your diet, and as you can see, the vast majority of the foods listed above tend to have anti-inflammatory activity.
The same cannot be said for processed foods, which as a general rule tend to be proinflammatory, courtesy of ingredients like added sugars, high-fructose corn syrup, soy, and processed vegetable oils (trans fats), and can contain some of the tens of thousands of chemicals that snuck through the GRAS loophole and are not even required to be listed on the label, despite the fact they've never previously been tested for safety in humans.
Replacing processed foods with real foods can make a significant difference in your overall health and weight, and ultimately determine how long you'll live.

The Chofetz Chaim once told a Mushel of a person who was on a large boat. There were lots of different people on the boat who were each doing their own thing. The man noticed that one person was busy under his seat. He went closer to see what the man was doing and noticed that he's drilling a hole under his seat! The man started screaming and asked him to stop what he was doing.
"This is my seat, and it has nothing to do with you," the man replied.
"This has everything to do with me," he answered back, "You see, if you make a small hole under your seat, it will affect everyone on this boat because we will all drown."
The Chofetz Chaim went on to explain that we each are responsible for one another. What someone else is doing also has an effect on us!

PREVENTION IS THE FIRST STEP TO RESCUE

The night before the group was to go home, Gailani arrived at the German consulate after sneaking away from a dental appointment. A German doctor wrapped him in bandages like a mumps patient, and the next morning he was taken to the airport. The acuity of the Turkish delegation on hand to say farewell was dimmed by hangovers from the previous evening’s party. They wished the sick man a quick recovery. Gailani was soon enplaned for Germany.
Berlin’s espionage efforts in Iran were threatening enough to persuade the British and Soviets to take over that country in 1941. Iran was the source of much of Britain’s oil and also sat astride a major supply route for the U.S.S.R.
Captain Bruno Schulze-Holthus, Abwehr chief in Tabrīz, went underground, protected by pro-German Iranian nationalists.
At one time, he hid in a brothel. He left there one cold night disguised as a mullah, with a henna-dyed beard, dark silk trousers, and Persian clothes, walking along Shapur Street north to the main road and the city’s outskirts. His contact, the chief German agent in Iran, told him that one of the shah’s top generals, Fazlollah Zahedi, promised that “a great percentage of the Persian Army is ready to rise at a signal from us.” But there was no way to communicate this news to Berlin. Schulze-Holthus’s wife, the only German available, was sent on the long, dangerous journey across the mountains by donkey and finally reached Istanbul, where she reported to Leverkuehn.
Zahedi did not keep his promise. To avoid capture, Schulze-Holthus took refuge
with the Bakhtiari tribes. The British, fearing he might sabotage the vital railroad carrying military supplies from Persian Gulf ports to the Soviet Union, chased him for several months until the tribesmen tired of the game and sold him to the British.
Despite setbacks in the Arab world and Iran, the Germans stepped up propaganda and made plans to install Husseini and Gailani, both handsomely subsidized, as heads of puppet governments in Palestine and Iraq. Currency was printed and uniforms manufactured for the projected Iraqi regime. The two men and their retinues competed for German recognition as the Arab world’s leader, bickering over spoils that never materialized. Their German supervisors also took sides, and the two factions spent the rest of the war engaged in petty plots against each other.
Meanwhile, the British acted energetically to arrest most of Berlin’s remaining contacts in Arab countries. In Egypt, British authorities threatened to depose King Farouk unless he removed his prime minister, who was receiving secret German subsidies, and his army chief of staff, who had given maps of the British defenses to the Italians. In a humiliation Egyptian nationalists would long remember, Farouk gave in. The British disarmed and demobilized Egypt’s unreliable army.
Many Egyptians were not fascinated and saw the war as, in the words of a young pro-German officer named Anwar al-Sadat, “a foreign conflict in which we had no interest.” When Germany’s Afrika Corps advanced into Egypt, the king, leading politicians, and army officers prepared to welcome the troops. “Great Britain stood alone,” Sadat wrote. “Her weakness in the
Middle East was apparent to everyone,” and her military position in the war “had become shaky and untenable.”
Demonstrators in Cairo streets shouted for a German victory. But the British defeated Rommel at El Alamein on October 19, 1942, and he was forced to retreat. U.S. landings in Morocco and Algeria trapped him between British and American forces. The German invasion of the Middle East, which at one time seemed unstoppable, was at an end.
Far from being hurt by their collaboration with Germany, however, some of Berlin’s ex-agents went on to important postwar careers. Ayatollah Abdel Qassem Kashani, detained for pro-German activities, became leader of the Iranian anti-shah movement of the 1950s that was a forerunner for Ayatollah Khomeini. General Zahedi staged a 1953 pro-shah coup and became a pillar of that regime. Husseini returned as leader of the Palestinian Arabs and unsuccessfully continued his efforts to wipe out the Jews. Fawzi al-Kawukji, the most important Palestinian Arab military commander of the 1948 war, was one of Husseini’s men in Berlin. Yasser Arafat was a relative of the latter and took the former as one of his role models. Nasser and Sadat came to rule Egypt; the collaborationist Baath party came to rule Syria and Iraq--the latter’s, president, Saddam Hussein, was raised by an uncle who was active in the anti-British revolt.
While the Abwehr’s Istanbul-based Middle East efforts failed, the Nazis were simultaneously conducting far more successful operations in the Balkans. All those lands had been ruled from Istanbul before World War I. Now the same area would fall to a foreign empire threatening Istanbul’s security.
Hajji Baba was on his hands and knees outside his house looking for something. His neighbors joined the search. One asked, “What did you lose?” “A gold coin,” Hajji Baba replied. “Where did you lose it?” “In the house, but the light is better for searching out here.”
--Turkish folktale
Czechoslovakia and Poland had fallen to the Nazis. But Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Greece and all the rugged Balkan
mountain ranges still stood between Istanbul and the Germans. During 1940 and 1941, however, the German war machine moved closer to Istanbul. The countries that had seemed the city’s shield--Hungary, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, and Greece--caught on fire and melted away. Every event in that process was watched from Istanbul with mounting horror and terror; each new Nazi triumph brought thousands of refugees pouring into the city. In the fate of those captive peoples and bombed-out cities, Istanbul’s citizens foresaw their own seemingly inescapable future.

Many amazing types of fruit are displayed in stores in honor of Tu B’shvat. Whether you’re buying exotic varieties, or the general all year round basics, use this handy guide to help you pick the best fruit available.
Coconuts: Pick one that has good weight for the size and whose milk inside is still fluid. If there’s no milk the coconuts are spoiled. Also, avoid those with moldy or wet-looking eyes.
Tangerines: Pick the glossy ones. Overripe fruit will have dry puffy skin.
Cantaloupe and Honeydew: Smell the rind. If it smells sweet and melon-like it’s ripe. If it’s just the earthy smell of the peel it’s probably still hard.
Watermelon: Hold the melon in one hand and tap it lightly with your other hand. If you can feel the reverberation in the hand holding the melon, that’s a good sign. This is the perfect medium between an unripe watermelon and one that’s too mushy.
Citrus: This includes oranges, grapefruits, ugli fruit, lemons, and limes. Pick them up and choose one that is heavier than it looks. If the fruit is heavy, it has a higher water content, which means it will be juicy!
Pineapples: The sweet smell of the fruit is a good indicator of its ripeness. Also, try pulling out one of the center leaves. If it comes out easily it’s ready and ripe.
Blueberries: Check the bottom of the basket for any spoiled, crushed berries. If all look good, it’s usually a good basket.
Dates: Pick the ones that are shiny and plump. Matte looking, hard dates will not have much flavor.
“The Face Comparison”: For many common fruits, the best indicator of their ripeness is to compare it to the face. If it feels like your cheek, it is overripe. If it feels like your forehead, it is still too hard and not tasty. If it feels like your nose, it’s at its perfect ripeness for enjoyment. Use this method on fruits like: Avocadoes, mangoes, peaches, plums, kiwis, papayas, pears, apricots, etc.
Body dysmorphic disorder is a type of chronic mental illness in which you can’t stop thinking about a flaw in your appearance — a flaw that is either minor or imagined. But to you, your appearance seems so shameful that you don’t want to be seen by anyone.
When you have body dysmorphic disorder, you intensely obsess over your appearance and body image, often for many hours a day. Your perceived flaw causes you significant distress, and your obsession impacts your ability to function in your daily life. You may seek out numerous cosmetic procedures or excessively exercise to try to “fix” your perceived flaw, but you’re never satisfied. Body dysmorphic disorder is also known as dysmorphophobia, the fear of having a deformity.
Treatment of body dysmorphic disorder may include medication and cognitive behavioral therapy.
Signs and symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder include:
Preoccupation with your physical appearance with extreme self-consciousness
Frequent examination of yourself in the mirror, or the opposite, avoidance of mirrors altogether
Strong belief that you have an abnormality or defect in your appearance that makes you ugly
Belief that others take special notice of your appearance in a negative way
 Avoidance of social situations
Feeling the need to stay housebound
The need to seek reassurance about your appearance from others
Boro
Frequent cosmetic procedures with little satisfaction
Excessive grooming, such as hair plucking or skin picking, or excessive exercise in an unsuccessful effort to improve the flaw
The need to wear excessive makeup or clothing to camouflage perceived flaws
Comparison of your appearance with that of others
 Reluctance to appear in pictures
You may obsess over any part of your body, and the body feature you focus on may change over time. But common features people may obsess about include:
Face, such as nose, complexion, wrinkles, acne and other blemishes
Hair, such as appearance, thinning and baldness
 Skin and vein appearance
 Muscle size and tone
You may be so convinced about your perceived flaws that you imagine something negative about your body that’s not true, no matter how much someone tries to convince you otherwise. Concern over and thinking about the perceived flaw can dominate your life, leading to absence from work, school or social situations due to extreme selfconsciousness.
Shame and embarrassment about your appearance may keep you from seeking treatment for body dysmorphic disorder. But if you have any signs or symptoms of
body dysmorphic disorder, see your doctor, mental health provider or other health professional. Body dysmorphic disorder usually doesn’t get better on its own, and if untreated, it may get worse over time and lead to suicidal thoughts and behavior.
It’s not known specifically what causes body dysmorphic disorder. Like many other mental illnesses, body dysmorphic disorder may result from a combination of causes, such as:
Brain differences. Abnormalities in brain structure or neurochemistry may play a role in causing body dysmorphic disorder.
Genes. Some studies show that body dysmorphic disorder is more common in people whose biological family members also have the condition, indicating that there may be at least one gene associated with this disorder.
Environment. Your environment, life experiences and culture may contribute to body dysmorphic disorder, especially if they involve negative experiences about your body or self-image.
Although the precise cause of body dysmorphic disorder isn’t known, certain factors seem to increase the risk of developing or triggering the condition, including:
Having biological relatives with body dysmorphic disorder
Negative life experiences, such as childhood teasing
 Personality traits, including low selfesteem
Societal pressure or expectations of beauty

For two years since my first attack of pain, tingling and numbness in my mouth, I started a round of doctors. I followed through a regiment of medications, but remained in the same condition... It was then when someone mentioned Dr. David Nissen. He was highly recommended, and ה”ב I was not disappointed!!!
At my first session, Mr. David suggested a few very effective vitamins. I immediately felt the cure come on. It has been almost three months since my encounter and I finally could see the light, not to mention I feel the taste of food again...
After so many attempts to resolve my health issue, I was shocked to see positive results after only one week of being under your care. I feel like a new person, Baruch Hashem! Thank you so much for being the right shliach!
Dear Rabbi David Nissen ’יחיש, I would like to take this opportunity to Thank You for being the right חילש in helping me get out of my problem. I’m suffering from anxiety and panic disorder for the last 3 years. I’ve tried so many different things but nothing has helped. Until recently I heard about you and decided to give it a try. You were extremely honest, and very compassionate. I tried your vitamins... and wonder... I feel like a new person ה”ב!
You said that you would help me with my H. Pylori and Thrush, and it did the job. Whereas my doctor’s medication was useless. I am very thankful!
...As far as I know the Lyme disease is gone! Thank you!
... I can’t remember when I last felt so normal between people. I would like to continue phase three, maintenance. Thanks so much for helping me feel so much better!
Having another psychiatric disorder, such as anxiety or depression
Body dysmorphic disorder usually starts in adolescence. It affects males and females.
Complications that body dysmorphic disorder may cause or be associated with include:
Unnecessary medical procedures, especially cosmetic surgery
 Social phobia and social isolation
 Lack of close relationships
 Difficulty attending work or school
 Low self-esteem
 Repeated hospitalizations
 Depression or other mood disorders
 Suicidal thoughts or behavior
 Anxiety disorders
 Obsessive-compulsive disorder
 Eating disorders
 Substance abuse
While it may seem that a procedure to fix your perceived flaw is a good option, skin (dermatologic) procedures, cosmetic surgery, dentistry or other approaches usually don’t relieve the stress and shame of body dysmorphic disorder. You may not perceive the results you hoped for, or you may simply begin obsessing about another aspect of your appearance and seek out more procedures.
Although you may start out talking with your health care provider about your concerns, you’ll likely be referred to a mental health provider, such as a psychiatrist or psychologist, for evaluation and treatment.
Being an active participant in your care can help you manage your condition. Think about your needs and goals for treatment. Also, make a list of questions to ask, such as:
Why can’t I get over body dysmorphic disorder on my own?
How do you treat body dysmorphic disorder?
 Will psychotherapy help?
Are there medications that might help?
 How long will treatment take?
What can I do to help myself?
Do you have any brochures or other printed materials that I can take?
Are there any sites that you can recommend?
Don’t hesitate to ask additional questions during your appointment.
Your doctor or mental health provider is likely to ask you a number of questions about your mood, thoughts and behavior, and how you perceive your appearance.
IT'S THE LIT TLE THINGS THAT MATTER MOST.
// EXPERT PEDIATRIC CARE
// EXTENDED EVENING HOURS
// MOST INSURANCES ACCEPTED
// SPECIAL ATTENTION GIVEN TO NEWBORNS
These questions may include:
Are you concerned about your appearance?
When did you first begin worrying about your appearance?
How is your daily life affected by your symptoms?
How much time do you spend each day thinking about your appearance?
What other treatment, if any, have you had?
What cosmetic procedures, if any, have you had?
What have you tried on your own to feel better or control your symptoms?
What things make you feel worse?
Have friends or family commented on your mood or behavior?
Do you have any relatives who’ve been diagnosed with a mental illness?
What do you hope to gain from treatment?
What medications, herbs or supplements do you take?
If your doctor or mental health provider believes you may have body dysmorphic disorder or another mental illness, he or she typically runs a series of medical and psychological tests and exams to help pinpoint a diagnosis.
These exams and tests generally include:
Physical exam. This exam can help clarify other problems that may be associated with your symptoms.
Lab tests. Lab tests may be ordered by your doctor, depending on your overall health or other problems associated with your symptoms.
Psychological evaluation. A doctor or mental health provider talks to you about your symptoms, thoughts, feelings and behavior patterns. You may also discuss any thoughts you may have of self-harm.
It can be difficult to diagnose body dysmorphic disorder, as it may be similar to or overlap with other psychological conditions, such as an eating disorder or obsessivecompulsive disorder. Also, you may be so embarrassed about your appearance that you avoid medical help, don’t reveal your true feelings to doctors or don’t even realize that your body image is distorted. It can take some time and effort to get an accurate diagnosis so you can get appropriate treatment.
To be diagnosed with body dysmorphic disorder, you must meet the symptom criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). This manual, published by the American Psychiatric Association, is used by mental health providers to diagnose mental illnesses and by insurance companies to reimburse for treatment.
Symptom criteria required for a diagnosis of body dysmorphic disorder include:
Being extremely preoccupied with an imagined defect or a minor flaw in your appearance
Being so preoccupied with appearance that it causes you significant distress or problems in your social life, work, school or other areas of functioning
Treatment of body dysmorphic disorder can be difficult, especially if you aren’t a willing and active participant in your care. But treatment can be successful. The two main treatments for body dysmorphic disorder are cognitive behavioral therapy and medications. Often, treatment involves a combination of these.
Cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on:
Helping you learn about your condition and your feelings, thoughts, moods and behavior
Using the insights and knowledge you gain in psychotherapy to stop automatic negative thoughts and to see yourself in a more realistic and positive way
Learning healthy ways to handle urges or rituals, such as mirror checking or skin picking
Teaching you other healthy behaviors, such as how to socialize with others
You and your therapist can talk about which type of therapy is best for you, your goals for therapy, and other issues, such as the number of sessions and the length of treatment.
Although there are no medications specifically approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat body dysmorphic disorder, psychiatric medications used to treat other conditions, such as depression, can be effective.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Because body dysmorphic disorder is thought to be caused in part by problems related to the brain chemical serotonin, SSRIs are typically prescribed. SSRIs appear to be more effective than other antidepressant medications for body dysmorphic disorder and may help control your obsessions and repetitive behaviors. Your doctor may increase your dose on a gradual basis to make sure you can tolerate the medication and possible side effects.
Other medications. In some cases, you may benefit from taking medications in addition to your primary antidepressant. For instance, your doctor may recommend that you take an antipsychotic medication in addition to an SSRI if you have delusions related to body dysmorphic disorder.
In some cases, your body dysmorphic disorder symptoms may be so severe that you require psychiatric hospitalization. Psychiatric hospitalization is generally recommended only when you aren’t able to care for yourself properly or when you’re in immediate danger of harming yourself.
In most cases, body dysmorphic disorder is difficult to treat without professional help. But you can do some things for yourself that will build on your treatment plan, such as:
Stick to your treatment plan. Don’t skip therapy sessions, even if you don’t feel like going.
Take your medications as directed. Even if you’re feeling well, resist any temptation to skip your medications. If you stop, symptoms may come back. You could also experience withdrawal-like symptoms from stopping a medication too suddenly.
Learn about your condition. Education about body dysmorphic disorder can empower you and motivate you to stick to your treatment plan.
Pay attention to warning signs. Work with your doctor or therapist to learn what might trigger your symptoms. Make a plan so you know what to do if symptoms return. Contact your doctor or therapist if you notice any changes in symptoms or how you feel.
Get active. Physical activity and exercise can help manage many symptoms, such as depression, stress and anxiety. Physical activity can also counteract the effects of some psychiatric medications that may cause weight gain. Consider walking, jogging, swimming, gardening or taking up another form of physical activity you enjoy.
Avoid drugs and alcohol. Alcohol and illegal drugs can worsen mental illness symptoms or interact with medications.
Get routine medical care. Don’t neglect checkups or skip visits to your family doctor, especially if you aren’t feeling well. You may have a new health problem that needs to be addressed, or you may be experiencing side effects of medication.
Coping with body dysmorphic disorder can be challenging. Talk with your doctor or therapist about improving your coping skills, and ways to focus on identifying, monitoring and changing the negative thoughts about
your appearance.
Consider these tips to help cope with body dysmorphic disorder:
Write in a journal. This can help you express your pain, anger, fear or other emotions.
Don’t become isolated. Try to participate in normal activities and get together with family or friends regularly.
Take care of yourself. Eat healthy, stay physically active and get sufficient sleep.
Read reputable self-help books. Consider talking about them to your doctor or therapist.
Join a support group. Connect with others facing similar challenges.
Stay focused on your goals. Recovery is an ongoing process. Stay motivated by keeping your recovery goals in mind.
Learn relaxation and stress management. Try such stress-reduction techniques as meditation, yoga or tai chi.
Don’t make important decisions when you’re feeling despair or distress. You may not be thinking clearly and may regret your decisions later.
There’s no known way to prevent body dysmorphic disorder. However, because body dysmorphic disorder often starts in adolescence, identifying children at risk of the condition and starting treatment early may be of some benefit. And long-term maintenance treatment also may help prevent a relapse of body dysmorphic disorder symptoms.

Looking for that perfect centerpiece for your Tu B’Shvat platter? This beautiful cantaloupe flower looks very impressive but is simple enough for anyone to try. All you need is some time and patience…
MATERIALS:
Cantaloupe (not an overripe one!)
Sharp Knife
Veggie Peeler
Lazy Susan (optional)
Step1: Start to peel the cantaloupe with the vegetable peeler. You want to do this with a peeler and not with a knife so you can get an even layer of the green part without exposing the fruit. (Picture A)
Step 2: Slice off the bottom so you have a smooth base for it to sit on. (Picture B)
Step 3: If you have a Lazy Susan it would be ideal to cover it with a paper towel and place the cantaloupe on it. It’s easier to cut when you could swivel it around. Begin the flower by making a small circle at the top with a sharp knife. (Picture C)
Step 4: Cut out deep little notches from the middle of the circle to look like the center of a flower. Then, use the knife to draw an outline of the first row of petals by making a basic U shape. It does not have to be perfect; let it look natural. At each petal, start digging out cantaloupe, leaving a little border all around and stopping at the line of your circle. (Picture D)
Step 5: Underneath this first row of petals, draw an outline for your next row of petals and repeat the digging out all around. Don’t be afraid to dig in pretty deep to get a nice shape, just be careful about leaving a good border otherwise the petals won’t have a good hold. Keep on adding layers of petals as far down as you’d like. (Picture E)
Step 6: To give the petals a realistic look and make them stand out, go back to each petal individually and make a tiny slit where it connects to the petal underneath. Then, cut off a small notch from the bottom petal border to leave a slight space between the top and bottom petal. Repeat this all around. (Picture F)

Confidence and self esteem are two traits which can influence your child's life. As such, parents should play a crucial role in nurturing these two traits in their child. Read on to find helpful tips on how you can boost your child's confidence and self esteem to facilitate overall development of your child.
Confidence and self esteem are two major traits that can actually define how far an individual can go in life. People lacking these two qualities are often found to fail in achieving what they had set out for and end up being branded as a "loser".
There have been several researches conducted by individual groups that study how the lack of confidence and self esteem affects the personal, social, educational and professional lives of people. It has been observed that around 70% of teens shy away from participating in regular everyday activities. This is caused by the lack of self-worth. Also, 86.9% of teenagers are overtly conscious and suffer from appearance anxiety.
Here are some of the key strategies for improving our child's self-esteem:
Comment positively when your child performs well or when he behaves well. Show that you are concerned enough to notice it. Do not take good behavior to be granted.
If certain behaviour needs to be changed, make your child feel that he is
still loved and it is only his behavior that is bothering you. It is important that you do not say something like "I do not like your attitude". Rather say, "I do not like when you speak to us in that tone."
It helps the child to learn when you discuss what had actually happened, what could have happened and how it could have been prevented.
At times results are not that encouraging. But you should encourage the child for his efforts. Do not think an attempt is a failure if it does not work out.
This helps a lot to instill self confidence and make him a better communicator. When you allow your child to win an argument at times, he would feel at ease in persuading and putting across his point and convincing others with due logic. Let your child decide something and discover the consequences. Allow him to learn and be accountable for his actions. But you should obviously keep an eye on the well being of the child and explain to him on how things could have been better.
You need to show interest in your child's activities and hobbies. As they get accustomed to your interest, they will not feel that you are being intrusive in the later teenage years which are considered to be sensitive. The presence of his dear parents when the child is performing remains etched as a strong support in the memory of your child for years to come.
Be patient to hear out everything that the child wants to share with you. Be a great companion to him. Learn new things together and cuddle him with words of encouragement. Non-verbal soothing communication can ease up the child, make him comfortable and also help him to express himself with ease.
Children should be encouraged to mix with others even if they are introvert. Make your child feel that home, family, relatives and friends are fun and a safe company. It is therefore essential that parents take special care about the growing up environment of their kids so that they inculcate these traits with ease and comfort. Childhood is the prime formative years of an individual and if the building blocks are set right at the initial age, there would be least problems in coping up during the later stressful years.

Hashem has filled Earth with millions of beautiful, fascinating creatures, from the colossal elephant to the miniscule fruit fly. Each of these animals makes a unique contribution to our world, and their needs are provided for precisely. Let’s explore the wonderful world of animals!
By Etty Berkowitz
The archer fish (spinner fish or archerfish) form a family of fish known for their habit of preying on land-based insects and other small animals by shooting them down with water droplets from their specialized mouths.
The family is small, consisting of seven species in a single genus Toxotes. The seven species typically inhabit brackish waters of estuaries >>>

and mangroves, but can also be found in the open ocean, as well as far upstream in fresh water. They can be found from India to the Philippines, Australia, and Polynesia. Their flattened body presents a narrow profile from above, so they can sneak up on their prey. The bold blackand-white markings camouflage them in the sun-dappled water under mangrove vegetation.
It is believed that only the juveniles are found in brackish water while the adults are more solitary and swim out to the coral reefs to lay eggs. 20,000-150,000 eggs are laid. Only a few reach maturity in 1-2 years. Young fish have iridescent yellow patches on their upper body between the dark bands, which perhaps helps them to school together in the muddy waters. As they get older, patches disappear and the black bands get shorter and eventually only seen on the uppermost part of the body.
Archerfish are remarkably accurate in their shooting; adult fish almost always hit the target on the first shot. They can bring down insects and other prey up to 10 feet above the water's surface. This is partially due to their good eyesight, but also their ability to compensate for the refraction of light as it passes through the air-water interface when aiming for their prey.
When an archerfish selects its prey, it rotates its eye so that the image of the prey
falls on a particular portion of the eye in the ventral temporal periphery of the retina, and its lips just break the surface, squirting a jet of water at its victim. The archerfish does this by forming a small groove in the roof of its mouth and its tongue into narrow channel. It then fires by contracting its gill covers and forcing water through the channel, shooting a stream that, shaped by its mouthparts, travels faster at the rear than at the front. This speed differential causes the stream to become a blob directly before impact as the slower leading water is overtaken by the faster trailing water, and it is varied by the fish to account for differences in range. It also makes one of the few animals who both make and use tools, as they both utilize the water and shape it to make it more useful to them. Archerfish have been known to send a stream up to 16 ft but can only shoot insect up to 3 ft–6 ft away due to their limited accuracy. They are also persistent and will make multiple shots if their first one fails.
Young archerfish start shooting when they are less than an inch long, but are inaccurate at first and must learn from experience. During this learning period, they hunt in small schools. This way, the probability is enhanced that at least one jet will hit its target. It has also been determined in an experimental context that archer fish were able to benefit from observational learning by watching a per-
forming group member shoot, without having to practice.
Once the jet of water knocks down the tidbit, the fish gulps it down in its large deep upwardly directed mouth. If the blast doesn't knock down the prey, sometimes the weight of the water on the wings causes the insect to lose its grip and fall. Archerfish will often leap out of the water and grab an insect in their mouths if it happens to be within reach. Individuals typically prefer to remain close to the surface of the water.
To determine how the fish aim these water cannons, animal physiologists Peggy Gerullis and Stefan Schuster, who are both at the University of Bayreuth in Germany, trained the fish to fire at specific targets. They then used a high-speed camera to film the animals as they shot at targets of different heights. The researchers found that the fish adjusted the speed of the jets so that they were most focused and forceful just before reaching a target.
To do this, the archer fish controlled their water jets by adjusting the rate at which they opened and closed their mouths. When they needed to hit a faraway target 60 centimeters above the water, the fish sprayed water for a longer period of time, opening their mouth more gradually, than when aiming for a target 20 cm above the water.
Archer fish control populations of their prey. They are also food for others higher up on the food chain. Although Archers are fairly common, they are threatened by the destruction of mangroves and by collection for the pet trade. Two Southeast Asian species are collected for the aquarium fish trade. They are not bred in captivity, but are popular for aquaria.
In Kew Gardens in the United Kingdom, archer fishes are kept in ponds with tropical water lilies to help keep down small insect pests and aphids.

“An interesting episode occurred last summer,” a staff member from the offices of Kollel Chatzos tells us. A young man called in with a note of desperation in his voice: “I beg you, have in mind my relative who has been on a respirator for several days. The doctors are hinting at a frightening prognosis and telling us to prepare for the worst….”
Hearing about the widely accepted segula, the Pidyon HaRashash – of which Rabbi Chaim Vital zt”l wrote, “It has been tried thousands of times and it always helped!” – the man asked that we mention the patients name at night and that we perform the Pidyon HaRashash especially for her.

She is already off the respirator and she will be released home in a few days…!”

Last week, President Obama gave the last State of the Union Address of his presidency. The State of the Union Address has a long history, dating back to George Washington.
The State of the Union is the address presented by the President of the United States to a joint session of the United States Congress, typically delivered annually. The address not only reports on the condition of the nation but also allows the President to outline his legislative agenda (for which he needs the cooperation of Congress) and national priorities. The address fulfils rules in Article II, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution, requiring the President to periodically give Congress information on the "state of the union" and recommend any measures that he believes are
necessary and expedient. During most of the country's first century, the President primarily only submitted a written report to Congress. With the advent of radio and other media, the address is now broadcast live across the country on most networks, and to the rest of the world.
The practice arises from a command given to the president in the Constitution of the United States:
He shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.— Article II, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution
Although the language of this Section of the Constitution is not specific, by tradition, the President makes this report annually in late January or early February. Between 1934 and 2013 the date has been as early as January 3, and as late as February 12.
While not required to deliver a speech, every president since Woodrow Wilson, with the notable exception of Herbert Hoover, has made at least one State of the Union report as a speech delivered before a joint session of Congress. Before that time, most presidents delivered the State of the Union as a written report.
Since Franklin Roosevelt, the State of the Union is given typically each January before a joint session of the United States Congress and is held in the House of Representatives chamber of the United States Capitol. When a presidential inauguration occurs in January, the date may be delayed until February.
What began as a communication between president and Congress has become a communication between the president and the people of the United States. Since the advent of radio, the speech has been broadcast live on most networks, preempting scheduled programming. To reach the largest audience, the speech, once given during the day, is now typically given in the evening, after 9pm Eastern Time.
Also, in recent decades, newly inaugurated presidents have chosen to deliver speeches
to joint sessions of Congress in the early months of their presidencies, but have not officially considered them State of the Union addresses.
George Washington delivered the first regular annual message before a joint session of Congress on January 8, 1790, in New York City, then the provisional U.S. capital. In 1801, Thomas Jefferson discontinued the practice of delivering the address in person, regarding it as too monarchical (similar to the Speech from the Throne). Instead, the address was written and then sent to Congress to be read by a clerk until 1913 when Woodrow Wilson re-established the practice despite some initial controversy. However, there have been exceptions to this rule. Presidents during the latter half of the 20th century have sent written State of the Union addresses. The last President to do this was Jimmy Carter in 1981.
For many years, the speech was referred to as "the President's Annual Message to Congress". The actual term "State of the Union" first emerged in 1934 when Franklin D. Roosevelt used the phrase, becoming its generally accepted name since 1947.
Prior to 1934, the annual message was delivered at the end of the calendar year, in December. The ratification of the 20th Amendment on January 23, 1933 changed the opening of Congress from early March
to early January, affecting the delivery of the annual message. Since 1934, the message or address has been delivered to Congress in January or February.
The Twentieth Amendment also established January 20 as the beginning of the presidential term. In years when a new president is inaugurated, the outgoing president may deliver a final State of the Union message, but none has done so since Jimmy Carter sent a written message in 1981. In 1953 and 1961, Congress received both a written State of the Union message from the outgoing president and a separate State of the Union speech by the incoming president. Since 1989, in recognition that the responsibility of reporting the State of the Union formally belongs to the president who held office during the past year, newly inaugurated Presidents have not officially called their first speech before Congress a "State of the Union" message.
In 1936, President Roosevelt set a precedent when he delivered the address at night. Only once before—when Woodrow Wilson asked Congress to order the U.S. into World War I—had a sitting president addressed Congress at night.
Calvin Coolidge's 1923 speech was the first to be broadcast on radio. Ronald Reagan's 1986 State of the Union Address is the only one to have been postponed. He had planned to deliver it on January 28, 1986 but postponed it for a week after learning of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster and instead addressed the nation on the day's events. Bill Clinton's 1997 address
The text of the first page of Ronald Reagan's first State of the Union Address, given January 26, 1982
was the first broadcast available live on the Internet.
A formal invitation is made by the Speaker of the House to the President several weeks before each State of the Union Address.
Every member of Congress can bring one guest to the State of the Union address. The President may invite up to 24 guests with the First Lady in his box. The Speaker of the House may invite up to 24 guests in the Speakers box. Seating for Congress on the main floor is by first come first serve basis with no reservations. The Cabinet, Supreme Court justices and Joint Chiefs have reserved seating.
By approximately 8:30 pm on the night of the address, the members of the House have gathered in their seats for the joint session. Then, the Deputy Sergeant at Arms addresses the Speaker and loudly announces the Vice President and members of the Senate, who enter and take the seats assigned for them.
The Speaker, and then the Vice President, specify the members of the House and Senate, respectively, who will escort the President into the House chamber. The Deputy Sergeant at Arms addresses the Speaker again and loudly announces, in order, the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, the Chief Justice of the United States and the Associate Justices, and the Cabinet, each of whom enters and takes their seats when called. The justices take the seats nearest to the Speaker's rostrum and adjacent to the sections reserved for the Cabinet and the members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Just after 9 pm, as the President reaches the door to the chamber, the House Sergeant at Arms stands just inside the doors, faces the Speaker, and waits until the President is ready to enter the chamber. When the
President is ready, the Sergeant at Arms announces his entrance, loudly stating the phrase: "Mister/Madam Speaker, the President of the United States!"
As applause and cheering begins, the President slowly walks toward the Speaker's rostrum, followed by members of his Congressional escort committee. The President's approach is slowed by pausing to shake hands, hug, kiss, and autograph copies of his speech for Members of Congress. After he takes his place at the House Clerk's desk, he hands two manila envelopes, previously placed on the desk and containing copies of the speech, to the Speaker and Vice President.
After continuing applause from the attendees has diminished, the Speaker introduces the President to the Representatives and Senators, stating: "Members of [the] Congress, I have the high privilege and [the] distinct honor of presenting to you the President of the United States." This leads to a further round of applause and, eventually, the beginning of the address by the President.
Customarily, one cabinet member (the designated survivor) does not attend, in order to provide continuity in the line of succession in the event that a catastrophe disables the President, the Vice President, and other succeeding officers gathered in the House chamber. Additionally, since the September 11 attacks in 2001, a few members of Congress have been asked to relocate to undisclosed locations for the duration of the speech to form a rump Congress in the event of a disaster.
Both the Speaker and the Vice President sit at the Speaker's desk, behind the President for the duration of the speech. If either is unavailable, the next highestranking member of the respective house substitutes. Once the chamber settles down from the President's arrival, the
Speaker officially presents the President to the joint session of Congress. The President then delivers the speech from the podium at the front of the House Chamber.
In the State of the Union the President traditionally outlines the administration's accomplishments over the previous year, as well as the agenda for the coming year, often in upbeat and optimistic terms. Since the 1982 address, it has also become common for the President to honor special guests sitting in the gallery, such as everyday Americans or visiting heads of state. During that 1982 address, President Ronald Reagan acknowledged Lenny Skutnik for his act of heroism following the crash of Air Florida Flight 90. Since then, the term "Lenny Skutniks" has been used to refer to individuals invited to sit in the gallery, and then cited by the President, during the State of the Union.
State of the Union speeches usually last a little over an hour, partly because of the large amounts of applause that occur from the audience throughout. The applause is often political in tone, with many portions of the speech being applauded only by members of the President's own party. As non-political officeholders, members of the Supreme Court or the Joint Chiefs of Staff rarely applaud in order to retain the appearance of political impartiality. In recent years, the presiding officers of the House and the Senate, the Speaker and the Vice President, respectively, have departed from the neutrality expected of presiding officers of deliberative bodies, as they, too, stand and applaud in response to the remarks of the President with which they agree.
For the 2011 address, Senator Mark Udall of Colorado proposed a break in tradition wherein all members of Congress sit together regardless of party, as well as the avoiding of standing; this was in response
to the 2011 Tucson Shooting in which Representative Gabrielle Giffords was shot and wounded in an assassination attempt. This practice was also repeated during the 2012 address.
Since 1966, the speech has been followed by a response or rebuttal by a member of the major political party opposing the President's party. The response is typically broadcast from a studio with no audience. In 1970, the Democratic Party put together a TV program with their speech to reply to President Nixon, as well as a televised response to Nixon's written speech in 1973. The same thing was done by Democrats for President Reagan's speeches in 1982 and 1985. In 2004, the Democratic Party's response was delivered in Spanish for the first time, by New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson. In 2011, Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann also gave a televised response for the Tea Party Express, a first for a political movement.
Although much of the pomp and ceremony behind the State of the Union address is governed by tradition rather than law, in modern times, the event is seen as one of the most important in the US political calendar. It is one of the few instances when all three branches of the US government are assembled under one roof: members of both houses of Congress constituting the legislature, the President's Cabinet constituting the executive, and the Chief Justice and Associate Justices of the Supreme Court constituting the judiciary. In addition, the military is represented by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, while foreign governments are represented by the Dean
of the Diplomatic Corps. The address has also been used as an opportunity to honor the achievements of some ordinary Americans, who are typically invited by the President to sit with the First Lady.
Certain states have a similar annual address given by the governor. For most of them, it is called the State of the State address. In Iowa, it is called the Condition of the State Address; in Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, the speech is called the State of the Commonwealth address. The mayor of Washington, D.C. gives a State of the District address. American Samoa has a State of the Territory address given by the governor. Puerto Rico has a State Address given by the governor.
Private companies usually have a "State of the Corporation" or "State of the Company" address given by the respective CEO. The State of the Union model has also been adopted by the European Union.

BY PINI WEISS, BETTER HEALTH STUDIOS
With all the diets out there, it is hard to know what to follow. Each diet claims to be the best. You might hear someone say, “I followed a fat free diet and I lost 30lbs in three month!” Eliminating a food type such as fat from your menu is not considered good nutrition. In order to decide which food group to eat less of, you need to understand what their functions are in your body. It is my mission to help you understand that fat is not the most important thing to significantly diminish in your diet. Carbohydrates is what you want to limit the most.
A diet is effective if it cuts enough calories from your diet. However, you need to be careful not to cut too much, or cut out anything your body needs to function. Weight loss shouldn’t come at the expense of your good health! I’m sure you have heard the body being referred to as the most complex machine around. In order for a machine to work properly it needs the proper attention and care.
In order for your body to function properly it needs certain vitamins and minerals which can be obtained from fruits and vegetables. Fruits and veggies are also high in fiber. In order to get all the benefits eat a variety of different types of fruits and vegetables. This food group usually needs to be increased in a balanced diet.
Your body needs fat in order to function properly. Fat is involved in many important functions in the body, such as regulating hormones, cell structure, helping transfer
nutrients in the body, and, as you may know, it serves as the largest energy store in the body. Many diets try to eliminate almost all fat and this is a big mistake! Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids are healthy essential fats that your body cannot produce. So be sure you eat plenty of healthy fats such as nuts, avocado, olive oil, salmon, and flaxseed.
Protein is the building block of your body, so you need a constant supply of protein. It is involved in many of your bodily functions, including building cell structure, (especially your muscles), enzymes, antibodies, and hormones. If you don't eat a sufficient amount of protein, your body won't function properly.
Carbs are the most readily available energy source in the body. When you need a quick burst of energy, carbs is your guy. Carbs are also the preferred source of energy for the brain and the central nervous system. However, if you eat too much, it will be easily stored as fat. The main function of carbs is to give you energy, but your body can do a great job replacing it with other energy sources.
So what does the healthy diet look like? Which food groups should you eat less of? Carbs are an easy energy source, and the typical American diet includes an abundance of carbs, which tends to end up being stored as fat. A healthy diet should recommend eating plenty of protein, and fats, fruits & vegetables, and a moderate amount of healthy carbs. And most importantly it should make you feel healthy and energized!

Of the many gifts bestowed upon mankind, of primary importance, is good health. As we go through life, this gift is often in need of maintenance and care. Vaad Refuah has prompted changes to enhance the healthcare system - both in terms of preventative and critical care - to ensure that patients are afforded the best possible healthcare. To this end, some of the innovative programs we have initiated are; the Friends & Care Program, Checkup On Us, WeCare and the We Are Family Program. We are very fortunate to have associations with Mayor de Blasio of New York, Dr. Ram Raja, President of New York’s Health and Hospital Corporation, the First Nonprofit Foundation, the Nash Foundation and many more – all helping us to help others.
rotations, medications administered and tests taken. Vaad Refuah also realizes that a patient’s discharge is just as crucial to his or her recovery. As such, a tremendous amount of time is spent by the volunteers making sure that the discharge process is completed accurately and as smooth as possible. Additionally, care is taken to ensure that patients understand the discharge instructions given to them by doctors and staff. Recognizing that there is a population of individuals, especially the elderly, who are in need of the prolonged services of a physician and/or hospital, Vaad Refuah has defined the specific needs of these patients and has endeavored to create solutions to alleviate undue stress and allow them to focus on their recovery.
Complementing the We Are Family Program is the equally essential Friends & Care Program. In a recent study, it was found that one in four patients will contract a potentially fatal infection or illnessunrelated to the issue they had when they were first admitted into the hospital. Over 400,000 patients annually are reported to have died needlessly in hospitals throughout the country. Vaad Refuah has created a preventive program in an effort to reverse this unfortunate fact. Vaad Refuah has researched common practices that often lead to hospital-contracted illnesses and trains patients and their families to identify them in an effort to protect patients in the most effective ways possible.
After compiling research from numerous books and medical journals and obtaining input from leading physicians and hospital administrators; Vaad Refuah has produced a manual -“Surviving Your Hospital Stay - Knowing What To Look For… And What To Look Out For” – which is used to train its 50 volunteers. This ensures that they are well-educated in the processes that Vaad Refuah is available to help with - i.e. how to survive a hospital tay. We also have distributed at the hospitals a short and concise handbook that is reader-friendly and available for patient and/or family use. It is replete with helpful information summarized from the manual and contains logs to be used to keep track of information such as doctor and nursing staff shift
Another important objective of Vaad Refuah is to bring to the attention of hospital administrations any matters that have become causes of concern to patients and their families – we are able to accomplish this by documenting each case that is brought to our attention. We strive to identify ways to eliminate any issues that can cause patients undue physical, emotional or psychological harm. From its inception, Vaad Refuah recognized that there had to be a fine line between working with the hospitals on one hand and on behalf of the patients on the other.
To that end, Vaad Refuah has worked tirelessly to win the respect and cooperation of the hospitals, and it is a testament to the hard work of Vaad Refuah’s Board, supervisors and its volunteers, that hospitals now recognize our organization as a cooperative partner rather than an adversary. In fact, Vaad Refuah representatives join members of hospital administrations on bi-weekly walk-throughs at hospitals (known as Patient Care Rounds), in an effort to check on the progress of various programs instituted as well as to see where further improvements can be made.
An old adage tells us that; “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” and we believe that truer words have not been spoken. With the vast changes that the healthcare system has recently undergone, as well as the economic hardships that affect so many, medical coverage is
often seen as a luxury rather than the necessity it is. In addition, even many insured individuals do not visit a doctor until they experience symptoms indicating a health-related problem. Vaad Refuah established a proactive program called Checkup On Us (CUOU), which assists and inspires adults of all ages to take advantage of annual check-ups. We work together with schools as well as community centers to raise awareness of the benefits of annual medical check-ups – and stemming the tide of the harmful effects of smoking and obesity. CUOU includes over 50 prominent physicians throughout the Metropolitan area who recognize that Vaad Refuah’s only agenda is to enhance healthcare. These physicians work with the uninsured at a discounted fee to make certain that every individual has access to basic – and oftentimes life-saving - healthcare.
Vaad Refuah continues its work to promote the well-being of tri-state residents with our CPR training classes. According to the American Heart Association, 88% of cardiac arrests occur at home. In the event of cardiac arrest, the administration of CPR is of utmost importance as CPR provided immediately after the onset of cardiac arrest can double or triple a victim’s chance of survival. Unfortunately, only 32% of cardiac arrest victims receive CPR from a bystander. Vaad Refuah has reached out to high schools in Brooklyn’s “inner city” neighborhoods to offer CPR and First Aid classes. The instruction that these young people receive not only provides them with invaluable skills, it has also been the impetus for many of our trainees to pursue careers as EMT first responders, paramedics and nurses.
People with a sick loved one in need of medical care, especially one who is elderly, are often stressed and overwhelmed. They are faced with making a myriad number of calls and arrangements to ensure the best care for the patient. They might need to contact medical referral agencies, arrange kosher food in a hospital, obtain medical equipment, find out the location of the Bikur Cholim Room and Chaplin in a hospital, as well as find a Bikur Cholim apartment near a hospital. There are many kind people or “Chesed” charitable organizations who are generously willing to help anyone who calls. People in need of these services often end up dialing many incorrect, out-of-date telephone numbers
while trying to reach the Chesed organizations who offer these critical services; while becoming even more frustrated during a trying period that is stressful enough already.
When someone is first transported to a hospital - many times alone - there are a myriad of anxieties he or she experiences. The fear of an unknown future is at the forefront. One major concern are the elderly patients who are alone. In such situations, the importance of Vaad Refuah’s We Are Family Program cannot be understated.
If requested, Vaad Refuah’s trained volunteers will meet patients and their families in the hospital. The Vaad Refuah volunteer can then impart all pertinent information, allay their concerns, and when necessary, monitor their case as an advocate. As an advocate, Vaad Refuah helps patients and their families learn how to best navigate a hospital stay and remain as safe as possible during that stay. If necessity warrants it, our volunteers, upon availability, may meet the patient in the emergency room and remain with him/her until family or next of kin is located and/or arrives. This sense of security is crucial in the initial phase of emergency care.
Vaad Refuah’s volunteers are fluent in many languages and are well-versed in patient rights. Patients and their families also turn to Vaad Refuah as the first place to call for various hospital related service.
Although there are currently some written lists of various “Chesed” organizations available, lmost all of them are significantly outdated and none are completely comprehensive.
Each Chesed organization in the United States has been personally called by Vaad Refuah in order to update the contact information and services currently provided, and all have been merged into one comprehensive database that can be searched instantaneously. We currently have over 750 Chesed Organizations listed.
While the scope of Vaad Refuah activities continues to evolve in response to the needs of the individuals who turn to us for help, our mission remains constant: we are committed to do all we can to ensure the well-being, respect and dignity of all individuals in their time of need.
