RECAP OF CHAPTER 70: Binyamin sends notes to a select group of trusted, ehrliche Yidden in the camp, inviting them to a learning group that he secretly intends to use for discussing escape ideas. Then he calls back Hanter. Bentzy and his father both speak to Binyamin. First, Binyamin quizzes them on matters of Yiddishkeit, to make sure he is speaking with true Jews. Then the Hanters quiz Binyamin, until finally, both sides are convinced that they are all Jews. The Hanters express how they want to save this Jewish camp, and Binyamin begs them not to involve the Austrian police. He is way too afraid of the Wangels hearing about it and killing him.

CHAPTER SEVENTY ONE

Only the moon illuminated the path that stretched out in a straight line ahead, and Binyamin was alarmed for a moment when Mottel’s shadow appeared in his way.

Mottel stopped Binyamin. “Nu, did you finish learning?”

“We intentionally chose this subject,” Binyamin said quietly, raising his eyes from the small, yellowing sefer. The handful of

I would certainly understand if it was a group of only older people, but the minute you are one of the participants…” He scowled ominously. “I know I’m not the only one who would like to know, based on which criteria was your group chosen, huh? Elkovitz is there, nice. And so is your uncle, Yidel. And I see that even your brother-in-law Aryeh is among this select and scholarly group.”

It was an obvious jibe, because Aryeh had lots of qualities that were very obvious, but none of them fell into the category of being scholarly or learned.

“Mottel, I believe that in time, the group will expand,” Binyamin said. “The Rav recommended a small number of people, and if you want to know, your name did come to mind, but I thought you’re too busy with the baby, and the bris…”

“The bris has been pushed off for now, indefinitely,” the young father said. “And my wife is still in the clinic, so I actually do have spare time these days. But I probably have to be polite and thank you for the fact that my name came to your mind. Really, yasher koach.”

Mottel was not usually cynical, so the fact that he was now meant he was either very preoccupied or that he was genuinely insulted. Binyamin searched for the right words, but Mottel muttered something hastily and walked off, without giving him a chance.

Information sure got around fast in this little camp!

Or maybe it wasn’t all that fast; if Mottel had eaten with his parents on Shabbos, for example, he might have heard that his father was going to learn with the new group. True, they had been asked to maintain secrecy, but the note they had been given did not stress that they should keep it a secret from their families.

And it was only expected that the

news would get out.

Binyamin sighed. He had no interest in appearing divisive or controlling, but he was afraid that that was going to happen anyway. And if that would happen, he’d have to ask the Rav if they should dismantle the group and work in other, more secretive and circumspect ways, or if they should increase the number of people who knew the secret.

The latter was a bad option by any metric.

Setting aside the risk for a moment, even those who had come today had hardly believed what they’d been told!

“You can’t expect us to do something that will endanger everyone’s lives before we have clear proof that you are right,” Daniel Landau had whispered angrily. Baruch Herzlich and Yosef Posen had joined the gentle offensive. Only Yidel, Chani’s husband, was quiet. Elkovitz added some of the details he knew, and Aryeh backed him up.

Binyamin didn’t give up. “We will prove everything, b’ezras Hashem. But in theory, can you think together with us about what we should do if it is indeed true?”

“They have weapons,” Herzlich murmured in his direction. “So in any case, even if their stories are false, they are very dangerous.”

Binyamin looked at him. “I’m not so sure…”

“You’re not sure? But they are from the Wehrmacht! They have uniforms, and weapons!”

“They are not from the Wehrmacht, even if it will take us time to digest that. The Wehrmacht doesn’t exist and hasn’t for decades, since the Nazis fell.” He looked around, at those who were eyeing him with skepticism, and at those who nodded with him in agreement.

“They are not from the Wehrmacht, even if they got some old uniforms or secretly sewed themselves something like it. And weapons? Has anyone ever checked Wangel’s gun from up close, to see if it’s loaded?”

“In the early years, there were some very unpleasant stories here!” someone cut him off.

“You’re right, in the early years there were,” Binyamin agreed. “But since then?”

“Well, since then, we’ve been very careful. We know that this is the only place we have to live.”

“That’s what we thought,” Binyamin corrected him gently. “And besides—maybe in the past they had some weapons, but it’s possible that today, their ammunition could already have been used up, right?” The men were quiet. “And in any case, we are the majority, and weapons are something that can be produced.”

“I hope you don’t mean something like that foolish uprising in the Warsaw ghetto.” Yosef Posen’s eyes flashed with fury. “Should I send you to my father, may he live and be well, to hear some stories from those days?”

“I know the stories,” Binyamin said somberly, “and I am not planning anything of the sort. We are going to have to apply more brains than brawn here.”

“Like what, for example?” Yosef asked. “You have to realize, I cannot even think of putting my family’s life in danger because of some delusions.”

“So we’re back to the same point,’ Elkovitz said, knocking on the table around which they were seated. “Your faith in the story. But if you get clear proof that what we are saying is correct—then will you help us? Think about it: There are Yidden in the world! There are Jews in Vienna! Alive, well, and not living under any oppressive regime!”

These words kindled a spark in the eyes of the other men, and Binyamin knew that Elkovitz was right with this tactic. Aside for the brains, they needed to speak to people’s hearts.

Mottel Kush’s figure grew smaller in the distance, and Binyamin quickened his pace as he continued walking home, aware that curfew would begin in less than a minute.

Who would share this news with Mamme? Right now, that seemed like the most complicated prospect of all.

Because while all those at the meeting had ultimately given their agreement, in theory, to help, Binyamin knew that the burden of proof still lay ahead of him. How would he persuade the men that he was right? Could he take them all to his hiding place at the top of the hill so that they could listen in to his phone call with Hanter in real time? It wasn’t practical, and it was dangerous. True, he had said tonight that he wasn’t sure that the Wangels were all that dangerous, but he wasn’t foolish enough to check it out with himself as the potential victim.

“With the assumption that this young man is not just mocking us for some reason,” Bentzy said to his father, “what can we do?”

“Practically? Nothing, at the moment,” his father said. “Exactly what he asked. But I am going to start thinking. And why do you think he’d be pulling our leg?”

“I don’t know…I thought of a few childhood friends of mine who would possibly do such a thing.” He shook his head, as if trying to banish the thoughts from there. “But it’s—just not. That would really be too foolish at our age. One phone call, nu, nu, but this is already too much.”

“Right. Personally, I think he sounds truthful.”

“So we won’t go to the Austrian Police, fine.” Bentzy stood up and leaned against the tall file cabinet in the corner of the room. “But what about the Israeli consulate? Don’t you think that we have to speak to someone? If he is right, and they’ve been living there for fifty years already—this is a terrible scandal!”

“We’re not going to contact the consulate either, for now,” his father replied, his eyes fixed on the silent telephone. “This young man sounds very sure about what he is saying, and if he asked us not to report to anyone just yet, then we’ll wait patiently. After all, we can’t know how the consulate will react to this story, because if they don’t believe us or don’t take it seriously enough, they might reach out to the Austrian authorities, and it can finish badly for those poor Jews over there.”

Bentzy smiled. “I see that you believe him completely.”

“Yes.” His father took a toothpick from the ashtray in the middle of the table. “Yes, he sounds sincere and trustworthy.” He switched on the recording again. The small reels began to turn, and the voice of the young man filled the room. When the recording came to an end, Mr. Hanter disconnected the device from the phone and put it in a drawer. “It’s better if this is not accessible to anyone else,” he said solemnly. “I’ll take it home with me at the end of the day. We should take very good care of it. These recordings are our only proof.”

“I find it really hard to believe that the consul will accept one word of this story.”

Ice Cream Cookie

COOKIE RECIPE:

2 sticks margarine

1 ½ cups sugar

1 tbs vanilla sugar

2 eggs

3 ½ cups good quality flour

¾ tsp baking powder

½ tsp salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Cream marg, sugar and vanilla sugar on high speed. Add eggs. Reduce speed. Add baking powder, salt and slowly add the flour.

Roll out dough and use cookie cutters to create your shapes.

Bake for 9-11 minutes.

Cookies should be a light yellow color, not brown.

COLORS NEEDED

Welcome back to our second series of summer cookies! Thank you everyone for your positive feedback! If you have not yet tried it, it’s never too late to get creative and produce these beautiful cookies for your daughter or friend going off to camp! Or even for those staying home, why not treat them to something adorable they will treasure?!

Outline: Light Brown, Dark Brown*, pink, yellow, white, colors for sprinkles or you can use real sprinkles.

Flood: Dark Brown, pink, yellow.

1. With the pink outline icing, pipe a half circle for the top of the ice cream, and a swirly line at the bottom. Leave to dry for 10 mins.

2. Starting at the corner of the pink, take the yellow outline icing and make another swirly layer. Leave to dry for 10 mins.

3. With the dark brown outline icing, pipe the cone. Leave to dry for 10 mins.

4. Flood the top scoop with pink icing. If using real sprinkles, you can put the sprinkles on now. Leave to dry for a few minutes.

ROYAL ICING RECIPE:

3 egg whites

1 lb confection sugar

Few drops of water

Beat egg whites with electric beaters until stiff. Reduce Speed. Slowly add confection sugar while mixing on low speed. Add a few drops of water. Combine.

You now have icing which is a thick consistency. This is good for outlining, writing, or adding any details on top of your cookie. For the cookie backgrounds or areas that need to be smooth, you need flood consistency. You do this by adding a few drops of water until you reach a smooth consistency.

Divide icing into separate bowls and add food coloring or gel as needed.

You are now ready to fill piping bags!

5. Flood the cone with brown flood. Leave to dry for a few minutes.

6. Once the cone and pink is fairly dry, carefully flood the middle scoop with yellow, taking care not to smudge the cone and pink! Leave to dry.

7. With the light brown, make a criss cross pattern on the cone.

8. Once the cookie is fairly dry, pipe yellow and pink drips down the ice cream with the outline icing.

9. When the pink is dry, approx. after an hour, pipe white drip on the top of the pink, with outline icing. Fill in.

10. Pipe colored sprinkles on the pink scoop.

11. Optional: Finish off by adding another white layer on the white drip.

CARAMEL TIRAMISU

Tiramisu is one of my favorite milchig desserts to throw together. This caramel version is so delicious, you can eat the entire thing yourself.

Layer in individual glasses for neater presentation.

Ingredients:

20-22 lady fingers (I used Shneiders)

1 cup strong coffee

1/4 cup confectioners sugar

4 tbsp milchig caramel, divided

8 oz whipped cream cheese

1/2 cup sugar

1 cup heavy cream

Direction:

In a flat bowl, combine coffee, confectionary sugar and 2 tbsp caramel. Mix well until everything is incorporated.

Remove 1/4 cup of the mixture and place in a large bowl.

Add cream cheese, the other 2 tbsp caramel and sugar. Beat until smooth and creamy.

Add heavy cream and beat until soft peaks form. Transfer to a piping bag fitting with a standard tip or a ziplock bag.

Dip each lady finger into the coffee mixture for a few seconds until mixture gets soaked into the cookie.

Layer lady fingers and cream until glass is full.

This simple dessert is so refreshing and belongs on everyone’s table. This can either be made in individual cups and served chilled or served as slices. To get neat slices, freeze the mousse and slice when frozen. The slices will stay in its form when defrosted but can’t be sliced without being frozen.

Ingredients:

1 sleeve honey graham cracker, crushed

1/2 stick melted butter

2 8oz whipped cream cheese

Juice of two lemons+ zest from one lemon

1 tsp vanilla extract

3/4 cup sugar

1 cup heavy cream

Chocolate Topping:

2 bars white chocolate, chopped 1/2 cup heavy cream

Directions:

Line a 9” springform pan with parchment paper. Combine crushed graham crackers and melted butter and press into pan.

In a large bowl, beat cream cheese, lemon juice, vanilla and sugar until creamy.

Add heavy cream and beat until stiff. Pour into pan and freeze for 3-4 hours.

For the topping: Heat heavy cream in a small saucepan until bubbling. Pour over chopped chocolate and mix until smooth and thick.

Pour over frozen mousse and freeze overnight.

STRAWBERRY CHEESECAKE COOKIES

These cookies and so buttery and soft, full of flavor and best of all, it freezes beautifully. You can make double the cheese filling to top the cookies as shown in the picture.

Ingredients:

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp salt

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1 cup brown sugar

2 large eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 cup frozen strawberries, chopped

1 bar white chocolate, chopped

For the cheesecake filling:

8 oz cream cheese, softened

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

Direction:

1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

3. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla extract.

4. Gradually mix in the flour mixture, then stir in diced strawberries and white chocolate.

5. In a separate bowl, mix together cream cheese, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.

6. Scoop tablespoon-sized balls of cookie dough onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 2 inches of space between each cookie.

7. Make a small indentation in the center of each cookie and fill with a small amount of cheesecake mixture.

8. Bake for 14-16 minutes or until lightly golden brown.

9. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

S’MORES MILKSHAKE

This milkshake has a unique flavor from the roasted marshmallow fluff. It’s a great summer treat and it’s good out of the fridge as well.

Ingredients:

3 cups vanilla ice cream

2 cups chocolate ice cream

3/4 cup marshmallow fluff

1/2 cup milk

Toppings:

Chocolate syrup

Whipped cream

Graham crackers

Marshmallows

Directions:

Spread marshmallow fluff in a disposable pan. Place in oven on broil mode. Broil for 2 minutes. Mix and broil another two minutes until nice and charred. Keep a close eye on it as every oven works differently and it burns easily. Alternatively, you can use a blow torch for more control.

Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Top with toppings and enjoy.

QI am 25 years old and struggling with extreme facial acne. I think I have tried everything, from natural to topical, to medical solutions. I am wondering what your take is on being on a dairy free diet for acne specifically. From your experience, did you see people making progress with a dairy free diet for acne?

AWhat Causes Acne, really?

Acne is a complex skin condition caused by a mix of factors:

Overproduction of oil (sebum) by the skin

Clogged pores, often from dead skin cells or excess oil

Bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) growing inside clogged follicles

Inflammation in response to irritation or hormonal changes

What triggers this whole cycle can vary. For many people, acne is hormonally driven or due to high stress. But food, lifestyle, genetics, and gut health also play important roles. That being said, where does dairy come in?

The idea that dairy products might contribute to acne isn’t just an internet myth—it’s been studied and discussed in both dermatology and nutrition fields.

Here’s why dairy might make acne worse:

1. Hormones in milk:

Even organic milk comes from lactating cows, whose milk naturally contains estrogen, progesterone, and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1). A cow produces milk for its “nursing” calf. It's basically a hormonal milk…

These hormones can stimulate oil glands in human skin and increase sebum production, which is a key driver in acne.

IGF-1, in particular, has been linked to acne flareups because it promotes skin cell growth, which can clog pores.

2. Milk and insulin spikes:

Milk—especially skim milk—can spike insulin levels, which affects other hormones like androgens (male hormones). Elevated insulin and androgens

increase oil production, which feeds the acne cycle.

3. Inflammation:

For some individuals, dairy is inflammatory, meaning it can trigger immune responses that worsen existing skin conditions.

While these pointers are all valid, being on a dairy free diet is still controversial. Why is that so?

Not everyone is affected the same way. Some people can drink milk daily and have clear skin, while others break out within days of consuming it.

Most studies are observational, meaning they show a link but can’t prove that dairy causes acne.

Dairy can be a valuable source of calcium and protein, so eliminating it without a good replacement plan may cause nutritional gaps, especially in young adults.

That said, the American Academy of Dermatology has acknowledged the possible link between dairy—especially skim milk—and acne, encouraging patients to experiment with removing it if other treatments fail. Keep in mind that being dairy free for 2-5 days is not long enough. Any dietary change that one implements has to be tried for a significant amount of time, such as 3-5 weeks. One will not see any changes sooner.

How can you try a dairy free approach?

Eliminate all dairy for at least 4–6 weeks to give your skin a chance to respond.

That includes milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, and whey protein.

Choose dairy alternatives like unsweetened almond, oat, or soy milk, and make sure you're still getting enough calcium (through fortified foods or supplements if needed).

Keep a food and skin diary to track changes and patterns.

2. THE NUGGET

Daniel was appointed as one of the chief ministers in King Daryavesh’s court. Other ministers became jealous and plotted to get rid of him. They convinced the king to decree that anyone who prayed to any god or man other than Daryavesh would be thrown to the lion’s den. As a Jew, Daniel Davened to Hashem 3 times a day. Despite the decree, Daniel fearlessly continued his prayers each day. He was caught and thrown into the lion’s den. But Hashem miraculously saved him, and he came out unharmed.

4. FUN FACT

Some say Daniel is Hatach, who served as a messenger between Esther and Mordechai in the story of Purim. Others say he was Memuchan, the advisor who recommended that Vashti be killed for her disobedience to Achashverosh.

After the destruction of the 1st Bais Hamikdash, Daniel was exiled to Bavel, along with other scholars. There he was given a position in King Nevuchadnetzar’s court due to his superior wisdom. After successfully interpreting the king’s disturbing dream, he was promoted to prime minister. Years later when King Belshatzar came to power and made a feast, wrongfully using Kelim from the Bais Hamikdash, a hand appeared and wrote a message on the wall. Only Daniel was able to interpret it. During the rule of the following king Daryavesh, Daniel was miraculously saved from the lion’s den.

3. BRINGING IT DOWN

Even when keeping Torah & Mitzvos is unpopular or seemingly dangerous, we must stay strong in our Yiddishkeit, knowing Hashem is with us and helping us. For example, even in a place where you’re the only Jew, show your Jewish pride.

5. QUESTION TO CONSIDER

What is a Torah value you hold that others might question or challenge? How can you strengthen your confidence while maintaining this value?

Use your markers to color in the four lions and Daniel template. Then carefully cut each one out and set them aside.

Take the metal wire and bend it to match the shape on the template. Use clear tape to hold the shape if needed.

Put a strip of double-sided tape on the back of each lion. Stick two lions back-to-back on one side of the wire, and the other two on the opposite side. -Assorted Markers -13” Metal Wire -Stackable Small Magnets, stacked to just under an inch (0.8“)

Put a piece of double-sided tape on the bottom of the battery. Stick Daniel onto it so he’s standing tall.

Place the magnets on the negative (-) side of the battery to make a strong base.

Carefully place the indentation in the wire, on the plus (+) end of the battery. The two open sides of the wire should be touching the magnets.

SCIENCE UNCOVERED

The magnet creates an invisible force called a magnetic field, and the battery provides electricity. When the wire touches the battery and the magnet, electricity flows through it, giving it a little push. This push makes the wire spin all by itself!
