Who runs this wonderful organization?

How do you find your doctors?

Mrs. Chana Brandel Landau. She was the one that started it and continues to run it.

How many years is it since Refuah Helpline started?

We only look for the best. We find top doctors and specialists who boast years of experience, maintain good relationships, and those on whom we get amazing feedback. Our in-house database has over 13,000 doctors!

27 years. What originally started as a onewoman operation, is now up to a staff of almost 50!

How do you develop relationships with doctors?

What services do you provide?

We believe that building relationships are important, and we try to operate by that. The doctors respect us, consider us as colleagues and value our involvement, which ultimately helps them. We help clarify, we simplify things, expedite getting records, expedite approvals, etc.

The challenge with any rare illness, condition, or disease, is that there is very little or no data about it at all. It is unclear as to which treatment plan would be best. That's where we step in and help get second opinions from medical experts and help our patients navigate which route to take.

week on Thursday at 10PM. By 1PM on Friday afternoon, the patient had already seen a doctor and had a biopsy – all done as an outpatient and didn’t even go through the ER.

How did you cope during Covid 19?

Emotionally – not so well.

We were home with our kids – some of us were sick ourselves, and we were working 24 hours around the clock while dealing with a whole new world of navigating new rules, policies, and a disease that nobody knew how to handle. Handholding and providing guidance were even more important to our patients now more than ever.

After a few weeks, we sat down and set up a Covid task force. We had one group chat dedicated to COVID patients, which included physicians as well, and we tried keeping people home and helped them navigate when they needed to be admitted. We hired new staff and now have a new division that helps people with all logistics and maximizes the current visitation policies etc.

What is something unique about the organization that most people don’t know?

It’s the way our entire organization was structured from the beginning when it was started, all the way to how it’s run today.

Mrs. Landau was the first askan to create an organization that was constantly available 24/7 with a system in place for 24/7 coverage.

Calls get answered by our Intake Staff who prioritize and route calls appropriately during regular hours, and we have an emergency pager service, so every call gets addressed in a timely manner. Mrs. Landau was also the

first one to realize that just because an ENT is a great ENT doesn’t mean he’s great for every situation. There are ENTs that specialize in hearing issues, ENTs that specialize in swallowing issues, and ENTs that specialize in sinus issues. This applies to every specialty.

Our referrals are customized, not just by specialty, but it is also customized by dynamics, insurance, as well as by all details involved.

Is there something you’d love to tell peoplea message you’d love to give over because of your unique vantage point?

This is especially true for large families – designate ONE person as the communicator between askanim and doctors. You can ask for a conference call so you can all listen in directly at major decision points, but on a day-to-day basis, have one person in charge of medical issues, and another in charge of logistical issues. You’d be surprised by how many things fall through the cracks because multiple people were responsible. The opposite is true as well – lots of things get done twice.

Be upfront about whom you’re working with and if you want to go for a second opinion.

Any good doctor will respect you wanting to go for a second opinion, and some will even offer to help facilitate it. It builds a lot of trust when you are upfront about it versus when they find out about it from somebody else.

It’s a small world and especially with today’s system; a lot of them will see it in the shared EPIC system that most hospitals use or meet each other at conferences. The same goes for askanim – if you reach out to multiple askanim, let them know about it

The less I eat, the more I lose?

The less you eat, the slower your metabolism works. If you hold your breath, your lungs are deprived of oxygen, but how long does that last? The same goes for food. You can only starve yourself so long. Instead of depriving your body of energy that it needs, focus on smart food choices. Skip the energy dense foods. “Sugar is not harmful, only excess sugar is a problem.” False. Natural sugar found in foods, which comes along with fiber and water is not harmful. Refined sugar, even in small amounts, is addictive. It therefore makes portion control difficult, leads to overeating, and is a contributing factor to the obesity epidemic.

What about natural sweeteners such as coconut sugar, agave syrup, honey etc.? Sugar in its natural form is healthy. Added sweeteners are not. If you were to eat a whole sugarcane, or coconut for example, that would have health benefits. As soon as sugar is removed from its source, and added to foods, it hinders weight loss. Cut out refined sugars and starches and watch the pounds shed.

Yawn. Blima Roizy’s eyelids drooped as she finished sweeping up the pile of dirt on her kitchen floor. Unable to see very clearly through her half-closed eyes, she somehow managed to get most of the crumbs into the dustpan.

Then she promptly deposited herself in the comfortable leather recliner in her dining room. Aaah.

Her phone, hanging on a string around her neck, suddenly began to vibrate.

The screen boldly displayed the name Mindalee.

“Hi, Mindy, what’s up?” Blima Roizy asked wearily. Mindy was her kindred soul, neighbor down the block and best friend since high school. They spoke every day, even if they had nothing to talk about.

“My house is flying,” Mindy responded dramatically. “I fell asleep on the couch as soon as my kids were sleeping and I didn’t get to do a thing around here. You don’t want to see what my house looks like.”

“At least you got to sleep,” Blima Roizy said, her voice slightly slurred as her eyes closed.

“Whoa, you sound tired,” Mindy said.

“Five points for Mindy.”

“This is not okay anymore,” Mindy declared passionately. Blima Roizy could hear her soaping dishes in the background.

“We go through our day only half-awake, or we fall asleep in the middle of it. We gotta do something about this!”

“Uhh huh,” Blima Roizy said. Her brain was slowly filling with clouds of cotton candy.

“I mean, what’s life for if not for 206

living? I think we need to find a solution. We can’t just keep pushing through every day without any energy for our kids or house.”

Blima Roizy didn’t respond.

“You know what my mother would say about all this,” Mindy’s voice turned thoughtful. “She would say, ‘It’s all because you’re so lazy. Just get moving, do some exercise, and you’ll start having more energy.’”

The other line was quiet.

“Hello, Blima Roizy? Are you there?” The silence finally unnerved Mindy.

“Yeah, I’m here,” Blima Roizy roused herself. The mini-nap woke up her brain somewhat.

“Did you hear what I said?”

“And the ladies who buy all the fruity and vegetable-y stuff your aunt sells are all bright and chirpy in the morning, huh?” Mindy said.

“So the clients at Morning Greens claim.”

“Let’s bet on it,” Mindy said suddenly. “I’ll do your aunt’s green diet and you go to the gym every day for the next two weeks. I say exercise is the answer, you say vegetables is. Let’s see who’s right.

You’ll be trying to up your energy levels with exercise, and I’ll do it with vegetables.”

“Hey,” Blima Roizy protested weakly. “I hate doing exercise.”

“That we should do exercise. But I have a different idea,” Blima Roizy answered. “My aunt says that eating lots of fruits and vegetables makes the whole difference in your energy level. She’ll bring you a million proofs to show you why it’s true. I think that’s a better option.”

“You better start loving it, cuz you’re going on the treadmill every night for the next two weeks.”

Mindy snorted.

“But you need to have energy to plan a vacation. That’s why I haven’t gone anywhere in years. Too tired.”

“That’s because you’re just a typical couch potato,” she said. “Let me guess. Are you sitting on the couch right now?”

“No,” Blima Roizy said with all the dignity she could muster. Her recliner squeaked in protest as she shifted to an upright position.

“The recliner, then. Point is, you need exercise even if you’re a shameful size 4 after five kids.”

“Says the one who eats chocolate for breakfast.”

“It’s a peanut-butter smoothie! With tons of protein to give me energy!”

“But it’s not working, as you just described,” Blima Roizy pointed out. “You’re lucky if you don’t fall

“What’s in it for me?” Blima Roizy asked suspiciously.

“Whoever wins gets an all-expenses paid vacation from the loser.”

“That’s why we’re doing this. You’ll get a chance to go to…” Mindy thought.

“Iceland!” Blima Roizy suddenly came to life.

“No, Arizona.”

“Come on, who wants to roast in Arizona? I’m going to Iceland,” Blima Roizy muttered.

“Arizona!”

“Iceland!”

“We’ll decide at the end,” Mindy compromises. “For now, let the Vegetable-Exercise Competition begin, and let the best lady win!”

Blima Roizy writes: The gym was dreadful. I set the treadmill on the slowest setting and I still came home a shmatta. Never mind that Shmully and Simi turned the house over while I was gone. I’m not going back tomorrow night. Bli neder.

Mindy writes: I bought out the produce section in my local grocery today. Tomorrow I’m having a fruit smoothie for breakfast. For supper today I had broccoli and mashed potatoes.

Potatoes is a vegetable. It grows from the ground.

Malka, Blima Roizy’s aunt from Morning Greens, laughed at me when I told her about our experiment. But she still gave me a discount on my order. I better win this experiment because my bank account is emptying fast on all this healthy stuff.

DaY 2 Blima Roizy writes: My muscles were so charley-horse today I don’t think I’m physically capable of exercising. I told Mindy so, but she just reminded me that if I drop out, there goes my vacation.

And I really could use a fabulous vacation these days…

I made sure Mindy was following the rules and not cheating on junk, then I schlepped myself out of the house to go to the gym. ‘Tis a competition, after all.

At least it was a social outing this time, even if I could hardly talk while I pounded on my treadmill. Bracha had it on a mountain setting and she sounded like she was taking a leisurely stroll. Not fair.

I still crave chocolate, though. It’s a good thing this thing is over in less than a week. I’m running out of ideas for salads and soups.

Blima Roizy writes: I walked back home from the gym after my session tonight. Not because I didn’t have a ride. And the gym isn’t particularly close. I was on such a high from my workout, I didn’t think twice.

After I came home, I cleaned the kitchen in minutes.

Oh, and the best part? Her husband drove us there and back.

Mindy writes: Malka is more than just a healthyfood business owner. She’s also a food coach. I never knew food could need a coach. Or that people could need a coach for their food. I mean, it’s pretty straightforward, isn’t it? Just mix together some pasta, cheese and ketchup and eat it.

That’s food, isn’t it?

So Malka’s teaching me that it isn’t.

Anything that doesn’t nourish your body isn’t really food. So pasta is out, apparently. Because it also spikes your blood sugar, and that high is automatically followed by a low. It’s all starting to make sense to me. I see why Blima Roizy believes her aunt has the answers.

I even snacked on terra chips today, and they were good in this they’llnever-beat-potato-chips-but-goodin-its-own-way kind of way.

DaY 8 Mindy writes: Should I admit it? I really do see a difference already.

Okay, so besides for seeing a difference in my fridge, which these days has all sorts of interesting contents like sprouts salads and jicama sticks, I also see a difference in my morning. I stopped drinking coffee because my power-booster

I fell asleep as soon as I hit my pillow, though, and slept more deeply than I’ve ever slept. I think this exercise gives me a fake high.

A rush of adrenalin that doesn’t actually have anything to it.

DaY 10 Blima Roizy writes: I don’t know why it took me until now, but as I’m starting to feel energized after finishing my exercise sessions, I decided to do some research to see why Mindy thinks this is the solution.

Turns out that exercise makes your body release endorphins.

Endorphins are a feel-good chemical, so that explains the high I feel after exercising for an hour.

Though chemicals sound pretty unhealthy to me, and I would think sitting on the recliner would be a smarter thing to make the body release endorphins.

But it’s not just a fake thing. You can actually get more energy from exercising, apparently, because of a whole scientific explanation involving mitochondria, who sound familiar from ninth grade biology but I don’t really know what they are. It also helps your body breathe more efficiently.

It all sounds good enough for me to sign up for a subscription to the gym instead of paying every night like I was doing till now. But 205

this does have me slightly worried about my prospects for an Iceland vacation.

DaY 12 Blima Roizy and Mindy met outside their houses that morning, like they did every day while waiting for their kids’ busses.

“Good morning!” Mindy chirped.

The winter sun landed in her eyes, making her squint to see Blima Roizy.

“Whoa, when’s the last time you got anything out of your mouth so early in the morning?” Blima Roizy said in surprise. “I have a feeling I should put an Iceland vacation on my calendar.”

“Not so fast,” Mindy said. “I overheard your Simi telling my Reiny that her Mommy started reading them stories at night instead of letting them listen to a CD. Oh, but you did buy them a new CD for during the day-and it was a Morah Music CD!” Blima Roizy couldn’t deny it, but she countered easily, “I’ve been checking on you, too,” she said smugly. “I asked your Moishy if I could borrow coffee and he said there was none in the cabinet. So I guess you’ve discovered what a fruit boost can do.”

Just then, the bus arrived.

Blima Roizy and Mindy got busy shepherding their respective broods onto the bus.

“Bye, Simi! Have a great day!”

Blima Roizy waved to her daughter.

“Reiny, don’t forget to eat your clementine!” Mindy said as her daughter climbed up the steps on the big yellow school bus. Reiny nodded to her mother.

“Let’s do it in Dewy,” Mindy said, mentioning the name of a restaurant known for its great salads.

would she ever finish this amount of vegetables? Not that she had anything against vegetables, but she wasn’t yet a fan like Mindy.

Blima Roizy narrowed her eyes at her.

“So,” Blima Roizy said as the two friends settled on the park bench and opened their containers. Wilted fall leaves squished underfoot, having been exposed by the melting slush.

“Let’s order from Dewy and eat it in the park so we can take a brisk walk afterwards.”

This time it was Mindy’s turn to narrow her eyes. ***

DaY 14 It was the day of the contest’s grand finale. Blima Roizy called a travel agent to find out how much tickets for two to Iceland would cost.

Mindy poured some pre-made dressing on her new two-minute salad combination. This was her snack before heading out to meet Blima Roizy at Dewy, where she would order another salad. Maybe she’d do a sweet potato salad there.

“Here, the main dish is salad,” Mindy explained as they looked over Dewy’s menus, done in shades of green and orange.

“Hmm,” Blima Roizy said. “I like pasta when I eat out. I’ll take their mock pasta salad made of spaghetti squash and tomatoes.”

“I like the real stuff,” Mindy countered. “I’ll do their all-greens salad.”

The containers Dewy used for salad were black hard plastic, giving them the feeling that they were buying real food, not a snack. And the size of the portions! Blima Roizy stared into her bowl with dismay. How

“Did you bring your competition journal?” she asked Mindy.

“I sure did,” Mindy said. “You have a very persuasive aunt. I don’t even crave milk chocolate anymore, because it’s full of sugar that will send me crashing after a few hours.”

Over forkfuls of vegetables, Mindy and Blima Roizy shared their respective experiences.

“I think exercise wins,” Blima Roizy said. “I guess I need to sponsor your vacation.”

“But I think vegetables win,” Mindy countered. “Do you want to go to Arizona?”

“Maybe we should just take a trip together,” Blima Roizy mused. “We can go to Iceland and hike up the volcanoes there.”

“Let’s go to Arizona. We can visit greenhouses there.” Mindy proposed.

“No, let’s go to Iceland.”

“Arizona. Way better.”

“Iceland.”

Blima Roizy saw the familiar twinkle in Mindy’s eye. Uh oh.

Was she going to propose another competition?

“Clementines, huh?” Blima Roizy said, almost to herself.

“We have to plan our grand finale to this contest,” Mindy said after the bus pulled away and just the two of them were left standing on the sidewalk.

Included in the exhibit will be old telecommunications equipment, vintage Hatzolah paraphernalia including jackets, badges, the outdated and bulky Hatzolah radios, cherry lights, and of course, medical equipment which has since been replaced by its more updated, state-of-the-art counterparts.

Another exciting part of the exhibit, sure to delight all little boys (and their fathers!), will be old-fashioned Hatzolah vehicles, including the East Side Ambulance (ES-1) which transported the aron of Rav Moshe Feinstein ztz”l during his levaya at Mesivta Tiferes Yerusholayim and on to Kennedy Airport. This ambulance, which has been sitting in a lot on the Lower East Side for close to 35 years, was towed by Nussi Josephy (B64) to his shop in Brooklyn where he painstakingly restored it and made it operational.

Indeed, Mr. Josephy is the power and driving force behind the Museum.

The Hatzolah Museum debuted at the Brooklyn Expo Center on October 24th and 25th, where Hatzolah members from all over gathered to see and learn about new, cutting-edge technology and techniques that they could utilize in their life-saving work.

The nostalgia-inducing exhibit was by far the most popular part of the expo, drawing much appreciation and admiration from the attendees, which included Reb Hershel Weber, legendary founder of the organization.

When should I see a dietitian?

We all go through different stages of life and may even be caretakers of children and/or elderly parents. Often, nutrition questions arise and sometimes, these can easily be answered by a pediatrician or another healthcare professional who is anyway involved in managing a condition or problem.

Many people wonder what a dietitian can or cannot help with or when it is appropriate to seek nutrition help from a professional.

Answering this question requires an understanding of what dietitiannutritionists do. By definition, dietitians are experts in diet and nutrition. We are trained to look at food intake and make sure a person is getting proper nutrients.

We also help adjust nutrients for certain purposes. While nutrition is a pretty specialized field, it is quite broad in that food affects almost every aspect of our lives, and also has relation to other medical industries (Food impacts health and can even impact the medications you take).

Dietitian-nutritionists are not doctors but have a role to play on the preventative side of medicine: that is, a proper diet can positively impact health and prevent disease.

Here are some reasons you might consider seeing a dietitian-nutritionist.

1. You are having a difficult time managing weight. This is probably the most common reason people see a dietitian-nutritionist.

Many people who struggle with dieting and/or cannot seem to lose weight and seek a dietitian to assist in reaching their goals. However, weight management is not only for people who want to lose weight.

Some people need to gain weight for one reason or another or even maintain weight.

2. You have a condition that requires nutritional intervention: In a perfect world, doctors would have an hour of their day to block out with each patient and guide them in what foods to eat or not to eat. Often, though, patients need more than a sentence saying, “you have diabetes, so limit your carbs.” They need help understanding what contains “carbs” and how much of which type to have at meals. Same for high cholesterol, digestive disorders, or any other condition that is impacted by nutrition.

3. You are a new mother: Many mothers have concerns that a newborn might not be getting adequate nutrients.

4. You have an unhealthy relationship with food or disordered eating: While we are not therapists, we can help you plan balanced meals and educate on what a healthy relationship with food and normal meals consists of.

5. You are considering going for weight loss surgery (or had weight loss surgery recently): Doing weight loss surgery is tricky, and living a life after surgery while getting the nutrients you need is even trickier. A dietitian can help prepare you in terms of expectations and help you live a better life after surgery. In fact, many doctors require patients to see a dietitian prior to surgery.

6. You feel you need additional support beyond “knowing what to do.” Everyone knows they should be eating healthfully but living life while keeping some foods in moderation requires learning what to eat instead and employing techniques to ensure you are successful at making the right choices. If someone feels deprived and hungry, they will most certainly not be able to keep to their goals. Figuring out good substitutes and strategies is key to making things work long-term. This is also a point that many people overlook: meeting with a dietitian once alone is not half as helpful as coming for consistent follow-ups. Follow-up visits are where dietitians add value: because that’s where we can fine-tune things and figure out what is or isn't working.

Nutrition is a covered benefit on most insurance plans. It’s a preventative benefit as well, which may surprise people. This means that even a plan where normally a copay applies might not have a copay to see a dietitian. Similar to well-visits, where insurances recognize that the service is beneficial and does not have patients held responsible for a copay, nutrition counseling does not have copays for many health plans.

Your health is so much more than just the foods you eat and the exercise you do. It is

affected by stress hormones, the quality of air you breathe, and the chemicals you use on a day-to-day basis, among so many other factors.

While we cannot control everything in life, there are certain strategies to deal with stress minimize toxins in a way that it minimizes its effects on health, such as finding healthy coping mechanisms or substitutes. Health is more than the absence of disease. If you are not energized and having the quality of life you know you should be having, a dietitian may assist you in reaching your health goals.

What is gut health?

Gut health describes the function and balance of bacteria of the many parts of the gastrointestinal tract.

Ideally, organs such as the esophagus, stomach and intestines all work together to allow us to eat and digest food without discomfort. All food is ultimately broken down in the gut to a simple form that can enter the bloodstream and be delivered as nutrients throughout our bodies.

This is only possible with a healthy digestive system.

A healthy gut contains healthy bacteria and immune cells that ward off infectious agents like bacteria, viruses, and fungi. A healthy gut also communicates with the brain through nerves and hormones, which helps maintain general health and wellbeing.

We know that it is important to take care of our health. Many people don’t understand that there is a very deep and true connection between your gut health and overall health. Being that our “gut” is not physically visible, it is sometime hard to understand that our gut needs care. Just like we will shield our eyes from strong sun rays and environmental triggers, we also need to shield our gut from unfriendly pathogens and unhealthy particles and foods.

What can we do to create healthy gut flora and keep our gut functioning optimally? First and foremost, our gut is directly affected by our food choices. Eating fermented foods such as sauerkraut, yogurts with probiotics, and kefir can really boost our gut flora and help you keep your gut health in check. Eating processed foods, fried foods, and having a diet high in sugar or in artificial sweeteners can really throw your gut health off balance. Try

to stick to clean, unprocessed foods for optimal gut health.

Additionally, sleeping the right number of hours at the right hours of the night, can have a direct impact on your gut health. Sleeping 7-8 hours daily will do wonders for your gut health.

Also, Regular exercise is known to reduce stress levels and help maintain a healthy weight, which can have positive effect on gut health. Taking antibiotics on a regular basis can kill both your good and bad bacteria. Try to help yourself with some natural remedies for the common cold before jumping to medicate yourself. Of course, if medicine is needed, take it with your doctors’ guidance, however, make sure to also take a good probiotic along with it.

Taking probiotics is a good strategy to improve your gut health. Probiotics can certainly be helpful, but they are not a panacea, because there is relatively little understanding as to how they work. For example, doctors have little understanding about how certain probiotics work for certain conditions, but we cannot say that there is one best probiotic that works for every condition or for every individual. The research is moving so quickly that we are likely to see interesting developments in the coming years.

To sum this up, here are some key pointers to keep in mind for optimal gut health: *Diet has a more powerful effect on the microbiome than any probiotic.

Eating processed foods is detrimental to your gut health. *Sleeping the right number of hours at the right hours of the day is critical for your gut health.

*Exercise and movement is very important to your overall health, especially to your gut health. *Probiotic species do not colonize the gut. In other words, they do not become established as permanent residents in your intestine, but instead exert beneficial effects on your microbiome, intestinal wall, and immune system as they pass through. *Probiotics work best in combination with a prebiotic or fiber supplement.

Such products are called synbiotics. *If you experience digestive bloating from a probiotic, it could be a sign of SIBO, (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) in which case you may benefit more from a course of a herbal antimicrobial. *Speak to your nutritionist or to your doctor about how to go about buying probiotics. It is important that you understand what you are buying and ingesting.

Yogurt is filled with live cultures. We need these live cultures for a healthy gut. Making homemade yogurt is fast, simple, and so healthy. This is a great way to get your probiotics!

Homemade yogurt: Fill up a 2-pound container with whole milk. Add 2-3 tablespoons of any plain yogurt. I recommend using the Bethel brand as it’s organic and has live cultures. Cover and shake the container. Allow the container to sit in a warm place in your house for 24-48 hours until the yogurt reaches the consistency you like. Chill. Serve with some fresh fruits and sweeten with maple syrup if you want it sweet.

MELINDA MANN BACK, CONTINUING HER OUTSTANDING OB/GYN SERVICE AT PARCARE ParCare Community Health Network is widely known in the community as the primary health center offering great care, which serves as a communitybased health center providing outstanding primary and specialty care, helping their patients prevent disease and maintain good health.

They provide comprehensive medical services to all patients in their state-of-the-art facility which is located at 16th Avenue and corner 48th street and provided by their team of top doctors and medical professionals.

As ParCare is always looking for passionate medical professionals to join their team, they are delighted to welcome the esteemed Dr. Melinda Mann as leader of the OB/GYN division.

Her years of expertise and professionalism in the community coupled with her skills and

dedication are what make her so valued. Her years and years of working for the Boro Park community is what makes everyone even more excited.

She displays outstanding care and attentiveness to every patient individually, and they are so privileged to have her on their team.

Community Health Network

Dr. Melinda Mann has graduated in the year 1985, did 4 years of residency, followed by a year of fellowship. She then served the Boro Park community for years, as a top doctor, with so much warmth.

She started practicing as an Obstetrician/Gynecologist in the year 1990, making It nearly 32 years of her doing what she does best- caring for every woman’s health and wellbeing.

When asked what she is most looking forward to as the leader of the OB/GYN team at ParCare, Dr. Mann expressed her eagerness at joining the team, because she loves helping the community and being there for them.

Besides the usual OB/GYN, she strongly believes in health promotion and optimizing women’s health in all age groups.

Instead of dealing with problems when they arise, and then solving them, her goal is to have women educated. She wants to give them the right tools and teach them all they need to know and do to have an easy low-risk birth.

Her dream is to help women

avoid developing into high-risk situations, by helping them make wise lifestyle choices.

Dr. Melina Mann is extremely motivated to fulfill her goals.

What recently became one of her primary goals, is to treat, and prevent problems with an evidence-based lifestyle.

Recently, science has proven that in essence, we don’t know all about healthy food choices. A lot of the things we have believed to be good are now being proved otherwise.

When studied, it is so evidently clear how all this has an impact on essentially all diseases and chronic diseases, like diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, autoimmune diseases, IBS, asthma, and so many others which ultimately can cause health issues.

So what Dr. Mann is passionate about, and what keeps her motivated, is to be able to offer her patients the right care that is backed by science. If you look closely at the science of

the microbiome, it all comes together as a unifying concept.

It is all about what we’re eating, the environment we are exposed to, our stress levels, the amount of sleep we get, etc.

She continuously says that teaching the frum world the existence of the microbiome is her ultimate motivation.

The team at ParCare is working on making this a women’s primary and preventive care and allowing women to become educated in lifestyle medicine.

Dr. Mann is board-certified in Lifestyle Medicine, which ultimately proves that she is exceptionally passionate about this.

As a woman herself, she knows that every woman wants to be healthy, have a healthy family, and continue being there for them.

She feels it is her responsibility to help them.

Another thing she is planning to do, is to get women together and educate and give them the right tools on how to eat and transform

their microbiome.

A lot of women tend to diet, lose some pounds, but then gain it back right after.

Dr. Mann says it is because most women don’t have the right tools and are not educated enough about their physiology. Her idea is to bring these tools to the community.

The office will be open for routine OB/GYN care as usual.

When asked if she has any tips she can offer, Dr. Mann said that really a wholistic approach is needed, and therefore there is no one specific tip that will substitute for a wholistic approach.

The thing she did mention, was that you need to be careful with where you are getting your education from. If it is some selfproclaimed theory, then it is not grounded scientifically.

Evidence-based education is what matters.

Another thing Dr. Mann wishes everyone would hear and take seriously is the importance of a doula.

Studies have shown that having a properly trained doula is instrumental to an easy birth.

Dr. Melinda Mann is excited and eager to be joining ParCare, where they will have 8 exams rooms, and serve as a full women’s health center.

ParCare offers the benefits only a large center can offer, and Dr. Mann offers expertise which only a top doctor can offer. Together, it makes the most powerful and amazing combination, which is looked forward to by all of Boro Park.

illness. The authors concluded that probiotic use is associated with a lower rate and duration of mild respiratory tract infections in children and adults, but again, more research is needed. There is also early evidence to suggest that probiotics might help prevent COVID-19 infection when used alongside other treatments, according to a study published in August 2021 in the Archives of Medical Research.

More research is needed to determine what specific kinds of bacteria may offer benefits, and in what amounts, as well as whether they will work the same for everyone the same way, says Libby Mills, a national spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and registered dietitian nutritionist near Philadelphia. “Everyone has different gut bacteria and a different diet,” Mills says. “What works for one person might not work for the next.”

She points out that there are hundreds of species of bacteria and even more strains, and the benefits of each alone or in different combinations have not been thoroughly researched.

Which Probiotics Are Best for Your Immune System?

You might already be getting probiotics without realizing it. Most of the research on the benefits of probiotics have focused on these common strains of bacteria: • Acidophilus, which is found in yogurt, milk, miso, and tempeh, might support the immune system, according to a meta-analysis published in the journal Food Bioscience in August 2020.

• Bifidobacterium is in yogurt, kefir, buttermilk, miso, tempeh, pickles, kimchi, cured meats, some wines and vinegars, sauerkraut, and sourdough bread. It may reduce inflammation, according to one meta-analysis in the journal Nutrients, from January 2017.

And a study in the February 2017

Nutrients suggested it may support immune health in older adults, too.

• All yogurt with live and active probiotics contains Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus (or L. bulgaricus) and S. thermophilus, according to the FDA, and these have both been associated with supporting the immune system.

Conversely, there are foods that can weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to illness.

Research published in the January 2018 issue of Oncotarget shows that regularly consuming alcohol, sugar, and ultra-processed foods can lead to cellular inflammation, your immune system’s response to potential harm.

Inflammation is a natural process, but when it occurs inappropriately or for sustained amounts of time, it can trigger chronic diseases and conditions including depression, cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s disease, according to Cleveland Clinic.

Are Probiotic Supplements Effective?

In addition to naturally being found in many foods, probiotics are sold as supplements and added to other foods where they don’t naturally occur, like orange juice and peanut butter. Mills says a balanced diet with foods that naturally feature probiotics may be the best bet.

“Getting probiotics from food is something most people can easily do and may have an edge over taking supplements,” Mills explains. “Food seems to have the fastest effect on changing the gut biome. Plus, the fermentation of the food may make other nutrients more bioavailable.”

Right now, probiotics’ efficacy is theoretical. Probiotics might have some effect on the immune system, whether it’s good, bad, or neutral to people avoiding diseases is unknown, says Pieter Cohen, MD, an associate professor of medicine at the Cambridge Health Alliance

and Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There’s a growing body of evidence that probiotics may boost immunity, but that varies with the type of probiotics, a person’s health and other factors.

They’re usually not necessary.

“If you take a healthy person, someone who doesn’t have any health issues to begin with, [they have] no need to take a probiotic supplement. There’s no evidence that that’ll improve your health,” says Dr. Cohen. If you’ve been a little unhealthy lately, probiotics can’t fill those gaps, he adds.

“We have no evidence that putting live bacteria in your body can make up for skipping a healthy meal, or a few extra hours of sleep,” says Cohen.

The best way to keep your gut flora healthy is to eat a variety of healthy foods. “Food is good for the immune system,” he says. “If you don’t eat, you’re malnourished, and your immune system is going to be low.”

He recommends home-cooked meals of fruits, vegetables, grains, and nuts.

A study from the March 2020 issue of Nutrients indicates that fiber intake may be associated with an improved gut microbiome, too.

Why Should You Not Take Probiotics?

There’s really no reason to take an over-the-counter probiotic unless it's prescribed by your doctor for a specific ailment. There are risks: Starting probiotics or taking too many can cause an allergic reaction, gas, bloating, constipation, or diarrhea, according to Cleveland Clinic. If you have a compromised immune system, introducing new bacteria to your body could make it harder for your body to heal, and even make you sicker. Don’t take a probiotic unless it's recommended by your doctor.

How can we become heroic parents? By helping our children learn how to create happiness in their own lives.

Later, in his book, Dr. Hallowell explains that there are five steps that parents can take in order to learn how to create and sustain joy on their own.

1. Connections. The sense of being rooted, both physically and emotionally is confidence building and uplifting for children. Children need to experience unconditional love from their parents – luckily this part of the connections section is easy! In addition, feeling part of a community, a member of a school, and taking care of family pets can be beneficial.

All of these elements make children feel that they are part of something larger and give them a foundation of security.

2. Play. Your children need to feel like children when they play. Instead of programming their play at all times and scheduling multiple activities, your children should be able to engage in open-ended play. Encourage them to use their imagination and invent scenarios. This will force them to solve “problems” by themselves. When they solve problems together or with their friends or siblings, they discover their own talents and resources. This builds confidence and self-esteem.

3. Practice. Sometimes, your children are going to fail. Dr. Wendy Mogel, in her book,

The Blessing of a Skinned Knee: Using Jewish Teaching to Raise Self-Reliant Children, writes about the importance of fear and failure in parenting: Parents’ urge to overprotect their children is based on fear - fear of strangers, the street. Fear of the child’s not being invited to the right parties or accepted by the right schools… Real protection means teaching children to manage risks on their own, not shielding them from every hazard… Children need an opportunity to learn about the “wave-pattern” of emotions.

If parents rush in to rescue them from distress, children don’t get an opportunity to learn that they can suffer and recover on their own.

Children who fail, should be encouraged to practice and get better. Therefore, encourage your child to stick to something even if it is hard – that will help build resilience.

Their success in the long-term will also give them a sense of accomplishment.

4. Mastery. Once your child finds a strength, help him master that skill. This mastery

can be related to flying kites, hitting a baseball, or tying their shoes. Whatever the skill, once it is mastered, children will feel motivated to tackle new challenges. This allows them to feel like they can take on anything – no matter how difficult.

5. Recognition. When you, your children’s teachers or friends let them know that they did a good job, they understand once again that they are part of something that is larger than they are. This links back to step #1 (connections) in which they feel secure and connected to a larger community. When children feel that their actions affect their family, classmates, and the wider community, they are more likely to act morally in the future. This in turn will make them feel good about themselves.

The good news: each step naturally leads into the next.

So, just start out loving your children unconditionally and helping them figure out how to play. The rest will come. So, as Dr. Hallowell would suggest, go out and play. You won’t regret it.
