I work in an office with five other ladies. And every single one of them is on this fad diet that includes yellow smoothies for breakfast.

So when I walk into the office and pull out my cappuccino and chocolate pastry, I get stares from every other cubicle. My sweater is literally burning from all the eyes and I think my cappuccino is getting warm. I’ll have to drink it quickly, because I only like cold caffeine.

“Want some?” I throw over my shoulder to Miriam, my closest coworker. Silently, she swivels back to the two screens facing her. I’m pretty sure she sniffs.

office. All anyone talks about is whole grains and Charna even does sourdough starter challah. Everyone else thinks she’s some sort of hero.

Charna is the darling of the dieters, because she ferments her own vegetables instead of buying her fermented treats, and she even makes kombucha. I think that’s what it is.

I tuned out when she described it because it just sounded so absolutely gross.

Today she’s talking about snacks. “I love dried fruit,” she says, as she takes out a trail mix of her own creation to snack on. “But it’s so hard to find good dried fruit without all the added sugar!”

My Diet Conversion “I know exactly what you mean,” Miriam chimes in. “I even have my sister bring me Craisins from Eretz Yisrael. They only add apple juice there, no sugar, and it tastes heaven!”

Raizy perks up. “Do you have any? I’d love to taste some.”

“I’ll bring some tomorrow,” she promises.

Tova and Sarale want some too. I’m quiet. Noticeably so.

When lunch time comes, everyone takes out their identical portions of eggs and toast. And some sort of salad which has ingredients that I probably can’t pronounce. Everyone stares at my container of Caesar salad with a generous helping of croutons and my sesame roll with cream cheese.

Heaven help. I just want to eat in peace.

Tova throws out her silver foil in the garbage near me. “You really don’t feel gross after eating that?” she asks kindly.

That night, I am desperate. Desperate to make the staring committee stop staring. I am desperate to be able to join the discussions on exactly how to drink the amount of water you are supposed to drink and how to make your Shabbos dips not be fattening. I think I’m becoming a diet convert.

I don’t tell anyone that night, because my better half would not be pleased to hear about an encroachment of the Diet movement on our sheltered household. Instead, I save my 347.787.1838

Before I leave to work, I prepare my healthy snacks. Even after all these months of working in my dietetic office, I still have no clue what to make that they won’t turn up their noses at.

I throw some strawberries, bananas, and blueberries into my Ninja with some Greek yogurt. It’s plain. That’s healthy, right?

My daughter wanders into the kitchen.

“What is that, Mommy? Isn’t that for parties?”

“I’m just trying something new for breakfast,” I evade. She looks puzzled A quick sip assures me that my concoction tastes good. Now for lunch.

I don’t have any whole wheat bread in the house, so I’ll just buy a sandwich on the way.

I stride into the office with a new confidence in my step. Today I’ll be able to join the discussions on the benefits of glass baking dishes versus aluminum disposable pans. I’ll have ideas about which healthy foods taste good and which ones don’t.

Proudly, I take out my smoothie as all the other women turn to greet me.

“Guess what!” I announce. Miriam, Raizy, Charna, Tova and Sarala look at me. “I’ve decided to become healthy!”

They cheer. I think for them this is like me becoming a baalas teshuvah. It is that major.

I’m practically glowing. This is the question they always ask each other.

Now they are asking me.

“Well,” I say, “I brought a smoothie.”

I take out my smoothie cup. The mixture is pink instead of their yellow.

But it is a smoothie.

“It’s aloe vera,” I tell her, fingering the smooth green leaves. “It’s to help Shimmy with his constipation.”

She looks somewhat impressed that her mother knows this.

“What did you put in?” Miriam asks.

The next week, I bring home organic vegetables.

“Oh, well, whatever I had on hand.

Strawberries, blueberries, bananas, and yogurt.”

“Well,” my husband says when I tell him about my bounty, “as long as it’s not more expensive.”

Miriam doesn’t look as impressed as I had hoped she would.

Um, it usually is.

“Better than a caffeine shot,” she says with disapproving approval. Yes, I promise it was disapproving approval.

I was there.

“Does it have to be yellow?” I ask mildly, as I sit down and begin to drink.

It’s delicious.

“Well, yellow fruits like mango and pineapple give you xxxxxx…”

So much for my diet conversion. I still have no clue what she’s talking about.

But I am determined. I am a fighter. I don’t give up.

Every day, there is a new topic that my colleagues turned educators teach me about. Slowly, I begin to stock up on the weird-sounding ingredients they tell me about and I join their weekly trips to the health food store.

I don’t think I’ll have the courage to admit this to anyone, but I’m even beginning to understand what they are talking about when my co-workers say that this new diet gives them so much more energy to get through the day.

Okay, so yes, my coworkers do laugh at me when I enthuse about my healthy new garlic dip which includes gallons of oil-even though it’s extra virgin olive oil. I don’t fully understand their reasoning either, but I dutifully strike it from my healthy list.

“But I liked the garlic dip,” my daughter says as we prepare our updated Shabbos menu. I debate if this is a “pick your battles” situation like they always talk about in the office. I decide that it is and let her make it.

But as for me, I learn to like techina instead.

My Diet Conversion that it is time I joined an exercise class.

This is one area where everyone in my cult-like office has their own opinion, whether it’s Pilates or kickboxing or yoga. Yoga sounds the most relaxing, so that’s what I join, but like I mentioned, for some reason it’s still hard work.

One day I walk into the office and I am holding a yellow smoothie identical to the other five in the office. I tell my coworkers proudly that I have instituted their latest guidelines on using only unpasteurized milk. But they are barely interested as Charna holds court about a new passion she’s discovered that includes something weird called kefir.

Being a diet convert doesn’t turn you into a hero.

They have another hero and that’s their nutritionist. I think she’s like a therapist or something, because they tell her everything. If you want to be part of the Diet, you need to go see her. She’s their guru.

It is a major celebration when I make the appointment. Everyone noshes on nuts at their desk that I donate in honor of the occasion. I’m basically a Diet member now. I think I’m past the convert stage.

Their nutritionist is actually nice. I’m happy I waited till now to come to her, so I don’t need to tell her that I cheat on cinnamon danishes. These days my cheats are way more benign, like eating too many sunflower seeds.

I like her, because she explains all the ways the Diet makes you feel good in plain language, instead of with fancy words. She tells me I should supplement with vitamins too and that I should take fermented garlic.

I gag.

“Are you sure?” I ask, hoping to get away with this one. “Like, maybe I could just eat garlic dip?”

She laughs. “You can buy fermented garlic as a pill,” she tells me.

Phew.

This winter I am fortified against the cold and germs with an army of good stuff inside me. All the Vitamin C from fresh orange juice, (I bought a juicer,) fermented garlic, and iron supplements are making me feel healthier than ever.

“I’m amazed,” I tell Charna one day in the office. “I haven’t gotten sick even once this winter!”

Charna smirks proudly. “I’m not saying I told you so!” she says.

“Aww, that’s nice of you…” I chide. But then I get serious again.

“Seriously, I think I’ve almost turned into you. I totally believe that healthy feels good.”

“And tastes good?”

“Well…” I hedge. “Sometimes.”

And with that, I feel the healthy glow settle over this healthy office, and the Diet seems like the best place to be.

I have good news and bad news.

The bad news is that if you are 24 or older, you are aging every day. It’s true – at the age of 24, your body is at its peak, and it’s all downhill from there.

What changes?

Knowing what mental and physical changes normally occur with age is the first step toward protecting your health.

Here are some of the more common bodily changes you can expect: Your Bones become thinner and more brittle with age as they lose mass, or density sometimes resulting in osteoporosis. Low bone mass raises your risk of broken

bones, including in the vertebrae (bones of the spine), which can cause a stooped posture and loss of height. While low bone mass and osteoporosis are more common in women, they can occur in men, too.

Your Heart As you age, your large arteries become stiffer, a condition called arteriosclerosis, contributing to higher blood pressure. Your Brain It’s common for people to experience some slight forgetfulness as they get older, and their ability to process new information or to multitask may slow with age as well, notes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

However, when confusion and memory problems go beyond the occasional “senior moment,” that’s not normal, and you should have it checked out by a medical professional. You could be in the early stages of dementia, but you could also have a treatable condition that’s affecting your brain.

Your Digestive System As you age, your digestive tract slows down and doesn't contract as often as it did when you were younger, which can lead to constipation, stomach pain, and feelings of nausea. Many medications also cause or contribute to constipation. To prevent these digestive problems, the Mayo Clinic recommends following a diet that’s rich in fiber, drinking plenty of fluids, keeping as active as possible, and doing your best to manage stress.

Your Senses As you age, you may notice that your five senses — hearing, vision, taste, smell, and touch — aren't quite as sharp as they once were, according to Medline Plus. Changes within the structures of the ear may cause you some degree of hearing loss and may also affect your sense of balance. The sharpness of your vision may dull, and you may need reading glasses. You may start to lose your sense of taste, thanks to a decrease in your number of taste buds. Consequently, flavors may not seem as distinct to you, nor as vivid. weaken with age due to decreased mucus production and a loss of nerve endings in the nose. You may also find that your sensitivity to touch, pain, pressure, and vibration is reduced — although some people become more sensitive to touch because of thinning skin.

Your Teeth and Gums The tough enamel that protects your teeth from decay can start to wear away over the years, leaving you susceptible to cavities. Moreover, per the American Dental Association (ADA), the nerves in your teeth can become smaller with age, leaving you less sensitive to pain and potentially delaying a diagnosis of cavities or cracks in the tooth’s outer surface. And according to an article published in June 2017 in the American Journal of Public Health, more than half of people over age 65 have moderate or severe gum disease; the same article states that around 400 commonly used medications can cause dry mouth, which heightens the risk of oral diseases.

Your Skin As you age, your skin loses its elasticity and may start to sag and wrinkle.

However, the more you protected your skin from sun damage and smoking when you were younger, the better your skin will look as you get older. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends sunscreen and moisturizer as the two most important anti-aging products you should be using. Wearing a hat with a brim will also protect the skin on your scalp and face. Start protecting your skin now to prevent further damage and to lower your risk of skin cancer.

What you can do Ideally, you’ll have already been practicing healthy habits throughout your life. But even if you haven’t, it's never too late to start taking proactive steps to maintain and even improve your health. Small lifestyle changes can have a big impact,

Stay Physically Active for a Healthy Body and Mind Keeping physically active can help offset many of the effects of aging. Exercising regularly can improve your balance, help keep you mobile, improve your mood by reducing feelings of anxiety and depression, and contribute to better cognitive functioning. It’s also an important part of managing some chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and osteoporosis.

Any exercise at all is better than none, says the CDC, which recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (like swimming or taking a brisk walk) each week; you can further break this down into 30 active minutes a day for five days a week. It also recommends twice-weekly muscle-strengthening activities.

Stay Socially Active with Friends and Family and Within Your Community Making the effort to interact with family and friends can have numerous benefits for your health. One article, published in The Journals of Gerontology, Series B: Psychological Sciences and Social Sciences in January 2019, found that participants (all over 65) who reported higher levels of social activity were more likely to experience more positive moods, fewer negative feelings, and higher levels of physical activity.

If you don’t currently have an active social life, look for opportunities to reconnect with old friends or make new ones. Seek out like-minded others in volunteer activities, gyms, alumni groups, or any other group that corresponds to an interest of yours.

Follow a Healthy, Well-Balanced Diet To get the nutrition your body needs and lower your risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease, make whole foods that are high in fiber and low in saturated fat the foundation of your diet. Following an eating plan like the Mediterranean diet can help you to achieve that goal. The Mediterranean diet emphasizes olive oil, nuts, seeds, fruit and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and fish. It’s low in red meat, full-fat dairy products, and processed foods.

However, it’s also worth doing a periodic medication review with your primary care doctor to discuss whether all of your prescriptions are still necessary. The more drugs you take, the harder it can be to remember when and how to take them all, and the higher your risk for adverse (negative) drug reactions as well as drugdrug interactions.

VOICE DISORDERS AND THERAPY Over the past greater than a decade that I have been treating voice disorders and pathologies, there has been a slew of questions which I am frequently asked; some of which I would like to share with you. While some may sound familiar and some may come as a surprise, my hope is that you will find the information provided informative and helpful should the need arise.

Is voice therapy only beneficial for hoarseness? The answer is no.

Voice therapy may be necessary whether a voice is hoarse, breathy, raspy, strained, rough, etc… or perhaps simply due to an abnormal sounding voice. Voice therapy is incredibly effective at restoring a voice back to its normal capacity.

Are vocal cord nodules able to be eliminated through voice therapy?

In my experience, the vast majority of patients that had nodules, saw either a significant reduction in the size of the nodules during the therapy or a complete elimination.

Can a voice disorder result from a traumatic episode? Yes. I have seen individuals with vocal pathologies ranging from mild to severe which were the result of a traumatic episode such as the loss of a business, etc… However, these are significantly less common than the typical voice problem.

Nonetheless, they are treatable.

My singing voice has become worse since I became hoarse. Does voice

therapy address this? Absolutely.

While a person’s day to day speaking voice may be quite different than their speaking voice, proper voice therapy will address both and can yield excellent results both in the speaking voice as well as the singing voice. I often guide my patients in how to further improve their singing voice post therapy simply by furthering their review of techniques learned in therapy.

Is appropriate water intake really that important for the voice? Yes, however while in some cases drinking the recommended 8 cups of water will have a large impact on the voice, in quite a few cases the impact will be minimal. Nonetheless, bear in mind that the vocal cords need to always be moist and therefore the constant hydration is beneficial. Please keep in mind as well however, that the importance of increasing water intake for say a professional singer obviously differs from say a typical voice user due the discrepancy in vocal demand and therefore one should not make comparisons.

How long does voice therapy generally last? While this question cannot be answered fairly without evaluating the individual, I can say that from experience, adults typically require approximately 6 – 8 sessions while children may require a bit more. Again, each situation needs to be evaluated properly before offering a timeframe.

Chezky’s Story H OW W E

What's wrong with Chezky? I watch him pace restlessly, his eyes darting nervously to and fro. Who is this jumpy, anxious eight-year-old? Chezky’s usual upbeat personality is gone.

Now he's bouncing with nervous and irritable energy, punctuated by random, explosive mood swings.

"Vitamins," his pediatrician advises. I run to the pharmacy to buy the vitamins the doctor recommends, a prayer on my lips.

The vitamins don't help at all. A week later, we're back at the doctor's office. Chezky is beginning to show symptoms of OCD, and his restlessness is at an all-time high. His siblings have learned to tiptoe around him, afraid of being the reason for yet another outburst.

Chezky's doctor orders a full panel of blood work as well as a throat culture. The strep culture comes back negative. The blood work shows that his ASO titers and DNase levels are elevated, indicating a recent strep infection in his blood. These results and his OCD and ADHD symptoms lead the doctor to a diagnosis: Chezky has PANDAS. PANDAS occurs when the child's immune system produces antibodies to attack strep bacteria and it also fights the regular bacteria. Some of these antibodies head to the brain, causing OCD, tics, and other neuropsychiatric symptoms.

The doctor prescribes a 30-day round of Zithromax. I hold Chezky's hand tight as we leave the clinic, feeling hopeful. I'm certain that we've kicked this terrifying episode to the curb.

The antibiotics do their job for 30 days. Chezky seems calmer, almost like his usual, relaxed self. As soon as the 30 days of antibiotics are done, Chezky's tics and restlessness return with a vengeance. Panicking, I confer with the doctor, who prescribes another 30 days of Zithromax.

The medication is not as effective as the first time around and as soon as we complete the 30 days of medication, all the symptoms return, worse than before. Chezky's eye tics, his OCD, his anxiety, and restlessness all come roaring back.

"I don't know what to say," the pediatrician says. "It seems to be an autoimmune issue. Perhaps try a gluten-free diet?"

We convene with a different doctor in the clinic who prescribes Augmentin. I give it to Chezky for 30 days but there are no positive changes to his condition.

Desperate and determined, I stop into a Williamsburg health food store and purchase all the holistic treatments the salesperson recommends. Doctors or no doctors, I will find a cure for my son.

Back home, I call everyone I know, searching for someone anyone - who might have the answers I need. With no information forthcoming, we try a fermented food diet and then a gluten-free diet. But the tics are more severe than ever, and the diets don't seem to help much, so we give up on that tactic, too.

I'm at a dead end. My son is suffering. His siblings want their old Chezky back. His Rebbi has been kind and patient throughout the ordeal, but he's at a loss dealing with a nine-year-old who hasn't learned steadily for nearly a year.

That's it, I resolve. I must put an end to this. I dive into the research again and come across a story about a mother whose child experienced a similar ordeal. Excited and hopeful, I reach out to her to find out what method she used to heal her child.

Many years back, when my uncle was a diligent yeshiva bochur learning in Mt. Kisco, he was walking along the road when suddenly a dog appeared out of nowhere, attacked, and bit him.

When he called a doctor to inquire how to proceed, he stumbled through his minimal English, translating from Yiddish, and said, “Doctor, I become a bite from a dog. I want to know if I need to become a needle.”

A bite from a rabid animal can be fatal when left untreated. The most common domestic animals in the United States that can transmit rabies are cattle, dogs, and cats. Let’s see what those who have had experience with animal bites and injuries have to say on the matter.

Boys Camp. Shloimy was last in the long line of boys leisurely strolling along, when an anti-Semitic neighbor purposely let loose his enormous Rottweiler. The dog set upon Shloimy who amidst much screeching, vainly struggled to defend himself with his bare hands. The clueless counselor and bunkmates had already entered the campgrounds ahead, and though Shloimy’s shrieking brought them running back to him in mere seconds, his hand was already badly bitten and slashed by the dog. Shloimy was rushed into the hospital where his hand was stitched up. Police picked up the dog to have him tested for rabies but the dog was found to be healthy. (Being that there were no witnesses to the crime, no charges were pressed.) However a traumatized Shloimy, who is in his forties today, still crosses the street when he notices a dog coming his way!

Raizy* was having the time of her life with her boisterous class whilst on a high-school trip to Newport, Rhode Island. She was blissfully passing by a tree, when a squirrel suddenly jumped out at her, clawing past her face and running down to the ground.

It all happened so fast, she didn’t even know what hit her, until her friends explained amid shrieks that it’d been a squirrel! School faculty first made sure that Raizy was okay and then immediately contacted her mother who was four hours away, placidly sitting in her home 347.787.1838

in Brooklyn. Raizy’s mother recalls getting that absurd phone call, telling her of the incident. Whereas Raizy was scratched and bleeding a bit, she seemed to be fine. The faculty wanted her mother to contact Raizy’s doctor immediately so that if Raizy would require shots, or medication, it would be prepared and ready before they got back from the trip. The doctor researched the matter and followed up with a reassuring call that the squirrels in that specific region do not carry rabies. He nevertheless prescribed a strong dose of Augmentin to prevent any other infections from setting in.

Let’s head over to the shochet Rabbi Brandwein* whom I now pester whether he was ever injured on the job by an animal. He chuckles as he recounts how he once slaughtered a cow. The cow’s head jerked up very suddenly - straight into the rabbi’s chest. The impact of a one hundred twenty pound cow head, upon contact broke a couple of his ribs. As with most broken ribs though, there is no treatment; the break heals on its own.

Rabbi Brandwein remembers being in a lot of pain for a couple of weeks.

Another incident occurred to the shochet while he was slaughtering sheep at a plant in Detroit, Michigan.

sharp two foot chalif out of the rabbi’s hands. The chalif flew onto the rabbi’s head which b’chasdei Hashem was protected by the required hard hat.

From there the knife fell down onto his palm, whereupon it pierced a deep gash across the juncture of the fingers, splitting many veins. There was lots of blood, and the rabbi was driven to the local hospital to be tended to. In the emergency room, the staff was not fazed by the rabbi’s messy hand at all, and with all the time in the world, explained that he would need to wait patiently. “This is Detroit, of gunshot fame, man. We have to administer a couple of gunshot patients first and only then can we see you.” In the ensuing rather lengthy wait time, the rabbi who was in a state of panic, kept approaching the desk requesting to be seen by a surgeon. All he got was, “Chill bro! You’re in Detroit! Gun wounds first.” His gash was finally tended to and stitched up. Every time he strains that hand though, a small burst of pain reminds him of his brush with Detroit’s emergency room protocol.

Mischievous Chaim* was in his terrible-twos stage when his story took place. His mother was washing his long beautiful locks when she saw a round bean sized object sticking to his scalp. It looked like a candy of some sort, but was not coming off. Upon closer inspection mom thought she saw tiny legs protruding from the ‘bean’ and digging into the 347.787.1838

scalp. Having an insect gripping little Chaim’s head was no laughing matter.

It was late at night, and so mom called hatzolah. The hatzolah member took one look at the parasite and declared it not to be a tic. He instructed mom to see a doctor first thing in the morning. When the doctor gently tried plying the insect off the scalp with a tweezers, it ruptured and blood trickled out - most likely Chaim’s blood, which the insect had been sucking on. He was mystified to say the least and exclaimed, “It certainly doesn’t look like a tic. If it is, then it’s an ‘Og Melech Haboshon Tic’!” He further instructed the duo to see a skin surgeon who would ably remove all parts of the insect that had remained in the scalp. So they did. Chaim was anesthetized and the area was expertly shaved off. Lab results came back that it had indeed been a tic -albeit not a lyme carrying tic- and it had unbeknownst to anyone, been sucking on him for quite a while now.

Fiascos tend to happen, and we must make sure to always take precautionary measures to avoid them.

But after all hishtadlus has been done, bear in mind that thankfully, most of the time the bark is worse than the bite. Only on rare occasions, is it the other way around, at which point one must seek medical attention right away! *All names changed to protect privacy

TAKE YOUR MIND OFF FOOD!

We approached Sheindy of Diet 1.2.3 for dieting tips. We are living in a generation of plenty and that’s a blessing. How, though, can we be in control so that the bountiful food available at our fingertips doesn’t lead to weight gain and obesity. It’s hard to distract ourselves from eating when we’re surrounded by it all day, every day. Why is it that we need to keep our mouths busy continuously and we find it hard to walk away from the food after a meal (think supper)?

Q: How can we take our mind off food?

A: Our lives, kind of, revolve around food.

Weather we’re shopping for food, cooking it, preparing it, feeding, eating, or cleaning up from it, food takes up a lot of space in our lives, especially in today’s generation.

In order to address your question, allow me to explain the root cause of being preoccupied with eating. It’s about what we’re eating that gets us to constantly look for food. Much of our foods today cause us to have cravings and not feel satiated. What we consider “healthy food” today is, in many instances, a far cry from nourishing food.

Many nutritious looking foods are genetically modified (GMO) or contain highly processed ingredients. Did you know that there’s sugar and food coloring found in some innocent looking spices? It’s surprising! When you’re eating a “healthy” lunch of salmon fish, for example, it may contain unnatural ingredients. All forms of sugars and processed starches have similar affects, regardless of its origin. Even if it’s organic. The front label of food packaging is deceiving. A good rule of thumb to know the true contents of packaged food items is, to check the back.

Added sugar is listed separately making the information easily accessible.

Q: It’s these subtle ingredients that gets us out of control, gaining weight and constantly looking for food?

A: Yes, as unbelievable as that sounds, it’s proven. There are a few aspects to it. Firstly, In order to upkeep a quick metabolism and a healthy weight, we want to keep our system really clean. As soon as we deposit even minimal amounts of processed ingredients, our system slows. These ingredients are indigestible. Our organs were not created to handle it. What happens to indigestible food? It sits in our system and slowly turns into fat which leads to weight gain. At the same time, when food is not properly digested, it doesn’t provide us with the full energy of the food. When were low on energy we think – ‘food’.

Another factor of the loss of control is that Processed foods have hormonal effects on our brain similar to drugs and alcohol. It’s addictive and overrides satiety cues.

Q: To conclude, the key to healthy eating habits is simply to keep away from processed ingredients? The portion control will happen naturally?

A: Exactly! When we eat natural foods our stomach shrinks, our tastebuds adjust and we can enjoy a renewed quality of life. We will get to our ideal weight smoothly and with ease. What’s more? It becomes a doable and sustainable goal. Being an educated consumer makes dieting invigorating and exciting, rather than torturous or boring. Knowledge is power!

Allow your child time to attend, process, and comply with directions, even if it means counting until 10 in your head to avoid getting antsy.

Things that are not a morning must, can be done a night before. Packing snacks, completing homework and choosing clothes donʼt have to happen during crunch time. Eating breakfast and brushing hair, on the other hand, cannot be tackled in advance. Go through your morning routine and keep only the morning must dos.

incorporatE Visuals Use visual schedules to increase independence. Gather pictures of each step in the morning routine and place them in order on a piece of cardboard or door jam.

Once you have put this in place, refer to the schedule (e.g., “whatʼs next?”) to promote independence and reduce the need for reminders.

STILL HUNGRY?!

BY TANYA ROSEN Some people still feel “hungry” while following a healthy balanced diet.

When I hear this after a client’s first week, I don’t even take it so seriously as it is normal transition. However, everyone’s favorite thing about my plan is just the opposite; the lack of hunger. So when someone complains of this past the first week, I’m actually very surprised and start investigating the possible causes.

What can it be?

LACK OF WATER If you aren’t drinking at least 8 cups of water a day, you may be mistaking thirst for hunger . If you weigh more than 150 pounds, are a man, nursing, or pregnant, you need at least 10-12 cups Of water a day. Try to drink two cups of water before every meal, before going out to eat, before a party or a Simcha, and especially before resorting to a cheat.

LACK OF SLEEP An adult needs AT LEAST 7 (But preferable to get 8-9) hours of sleep every single night. Missing even one night can affect your hunger signals. When you’re too tired to think clearly you simply can’t make as good of a decision on that piece of cake or those fries. Further, lack of sleep releases the ghrelin hormone which is the hunger hormone!

having it constantly or excessively, can cause hunger!

Or emotional eating. Try to find healthier ways to relieve stress such as exercise, a bath, etc.

MEDICATIONS Some medications can actually cause you to feel hungrier. If it is an option to switch brands you can try that.

NOT EATING OFTEN ENOUGH On my plan, a huge premise is eating every few hours to prevent hunger (amongst other benefits). Make sure you’re eating every 2-3 hours. Even splitting up your meals and snacks if you can’t eat it all at once helps.

NOT HAVING ENOUGH VEGETABLES OR HEALTHY FATS On my plan we recommend having a fruit or a vegetable with every meal.

are great fillers because of their fiber amounts NURSING Nursing mothers require around 500 extra calories per day plus a lot more water than non nursing women. If you’re not getting these extra calories (From healthy sources), you truly may be hungry. Combine that with lack of sleep and you have even more reason to feel hungry.

PREGNANT Cravings are NOT the same as physical hunger so just make sure you’re differentiating between the two.

If despite dealing with or eliminating all of the above, you still feel hungry, here are some more natural ways to help: AKA NEVER EVER TAKE “DIET PILLS” There are several natural herbs and plants that have been shown to surpasses one’s appetite and heighten the feeling of feeling full. Here are some that can help surpasses appetite and help you lose weight: 1. FENUGREEK - is an herb from the legume family. Since fenugreek is high in fiber, it’s been shown to control appetite, as well as blood sugar regulation and lower cholesterol. Fenugreek can either be taken as a whole seed, or a capsule.

2. GLUCOMANNAN - this helps decrease the absorption of protein and fats, helps feeds the friendly bacteria we have in our gut, regulates blood sugar levels and reduces LDL cholesterol.

Glucomannan is a great soluble fiber that is the most effective for weight loss.

3. GRIFFONIA SIMPLICIFOLIA (5-HTP) - this is a plant that is one of the best sources of 5-HTP (5-hydroxyryptophan). 5-HTP is a compound that gets converted into serotonin in the brain, where an increase in serotonin has an effect in the brain to surpasses appetite.

4. GREEN TEA EXTRACT - Green tea contains two compounds that helps with weight loss: caffeine and catechins.

Caffeine is a stimulant that increases fat burning and surpasses appetite.

5. GARCINIA CAMBOGIA - This is effective in lowering appetite, where it blocks fat production and decreasing body weight. In addition, it also raises serotonin levels. Serotonin is in charge of satiety signals in the brain.

6. COFFEE - Coffee and its high concentration of caffeine is known to have some health benefits. It increases fat breakdown and calorie burn. Studies show that ingesting caffeine a 1/2 hour to 4 hours before a meal may affect appetite hormones, feelings of hunger and “stomach emptying”.
