AThe house is spanking clean. The air is fresh. The birds are chirping. Pesach is a wonderful time. Let’s explore some tips that can help us feel wonderful.
Whether you are on a mission to eat and live healthy and feel great, or if you are on a weight loss journey, don’t get overwhelmed thinking that you will be having so many meals. Focus on the foods that you CAN have this yom tov and not on what you CANNOT have.
Enjoy different protein options at meal times such as different cuts of meats and fish. Experiment using some natural and unprocessed ingredients on your proteins as opposed to using commercialized and processed sauces and condiments that are typically very sugar laden.
At mealtime, try to be conscious of the amount of matzah you are munching on. All these little pieces do add up! Try to opt for whole wheat or spelt matzah so that it is easier on your system. Best would be to prepare
your piece of matzah at the start of the meal so that you can keep track of how much you are eating.
Understand that while grape juice is derived from fruit, it does contain a very large amount of sugar. Drinking too much grape juice is not good for anyone. Of course, have your grape juice at the sedarim but aim for water at all other times.
Buy lots of lettuce/marror leaves and have them on hand to be used at every meal. Add any vegetables you use on Pesach for a quick and easy salad that can be paired with your main dish instead of carbs only.
Keep in mind that although Pesach cakes and cookies do not have flour, they are very fattening even though they are made with almond flour or potato starch. Also, many of the kosher for Pesach cakes have a lot more sugar and processed fats in them, so be mindful.
Hydrate! As usual- water is very important for anyone, no matter your age, stage
or gender. Buy yourself a new water bottle for Pesach. I highly recommend the Contigo 32-ounce water bottle with a straw that can be purchased on Amazon. Fill it up twice a day and you are done with your water for the day!
Spending time with family does not have to mean spending more time eating! The weather is glorious- enjoy it! Spend some time outdoors or play some games with those you love! Go for a walk, rent some bikes, play some sports and have fun without the excess foods. Enjoy cut up fruits, hardboiled eggs and sting cheese for protein in between meals.
Exercise! You can still maintain your exercise regimen on chol hamoed. No need to feel sluggish and tired. Do what you typically do! On yom tov, take a walk around the block after meals to make yourself feel comfortable.
