Recap: When Tova goes to try out the job at the daycare center, her baby is terribly cranky and cries nonstop at the babysitter. Tova finds the job boring, but Menachem tells her she should take it anyway, because they need the income.

Shloimy, in Eretz Yisroel, walks into his dorm room to find his roommates roasting franks on tea lights. Despairing of getting any sleep, he walks to the Kosel, where he spends an uplifting night and davens vasikin. But when he comes back, he runs into the mashgiach, who isn’t very happy to see him.

Shloimy’s about to turn the handle on the door to his room, thrilled to hear the snoring from within, when suddenly an apparition comes barreling down the narrow hallway. It’s Zweig.

Zweig’s face is red, like a glowing coal.

“What business does a yeshivah bachur have coming into yeshiva at such an hour?” he demands furiously from Shloimy, coming up close to his face. “It’s already almost time for Shacharis and Shloimy Geller wants to go to sleep! Is that so?”

Shloimy takes a deep breath.

“Harav Zweig,” he says respectfully, ignoring the flush in his own cheeks and his overwhelming tiredness, “I don’t want to say any lashon hara, but it is very hard for me to sleep in this room. Maybe it’s possible for me to switch to a different room, where it will be easier for me to sleep, and then I won’t need to find other places to spend my night?”

There, he’s said it. Shloimy holds his breath as he finishes his plea.

“What?!” the mashgiach bellows. “We do whatever we want and then the yeshivah needs to do what you want also?! It doesn’t work like that around here! First, let’s see that you do what you’re supposed to. Then we can talk about switching rooms.” Zweig shakes his head in disbelief at Shloimy’s unabashed chutzpa. “What a way to make a request! Now, you broke the rules by being out at night. You owe me fifty dollars as a fine. Make sure you bring it to me by tomorrow.”

With that, the mashgiach turns and walks away.

Shloimy can feel the heat rising in his face. His hands tingle with fury.

How can the mashgiach refuse him so cavalierly? And where is he supposed to get the money from to pay this fine?

There’s no way he’s asking his elderly

parents for money for such a thing.

Shloimy twists the door handle and pulls the door open. The anger in his throat stings as he sees Pesach sprawled in his bed across from the door, deeply asleep. Shloimy knows what his roommate’s schedule will be. He’ll wake up at the last possible second, run to seder right after he wakes up without davening first, then quickly daven on his own by lunch break.

But what does it matter what others do? The mashgiach caught Shloimy and now he’s done for. In despair, Shloimy throws himself onto his bed, fully clothed. In minutes, he’s asleep. *** “An Evening of Fun and Inspiration.”

I stare at the ad Menachem brought home absently. The N’shei of Kollel Penton is having another of their monthly get-togethers. Are we really only here for less than two months? It feels like a lot longer than that.

On the other hand…it’s been so short.

Too short of a time to have gotten to know the other ladies well yet. The only one I’ve schmoozed with is still Perel Dansky.

I wrinkle my nose. It’s intimidating to be the only newcomer to a close-knit sisterhood.

I hear the washing machine chiming in the far reaches of the laundry room. With a sigh, I get up to heed its call, clunking down the hallway in my Adidas slides.

Imagine if I’d have been able to do lunch with a friend today. No chenille

and slides for me then! I’d have a reason to pull out one of my perfect teaching outfits and my patent toepinchers. Maybe I’d be able to network so I’d find a job faster and we wouldn’t be heading to the poorhouse the way Menachem thinks we will be.

Wouldn’t that be ironic, to live in this gorgeous palace and be flat broke?

The thought actually terrifies me, come to think of it. Yesterday we decided to dip into our savings for lack of choices, so broke-ness is a real possibility. Yikes. I must find a job.

Like, last week.

But I’ve been looking, a plaintive voice says in my head. And I haven’t managed to find anything yet. Even the daycare center hasn’t called me back.

My throat feels tight. I feel stuck.

Didn’t Perel Dansky tell me she would help me find something? She’s supposed to be in charge of the new kollel members’ adjustment.

With a sudden resolution, I slide my phone out of my sweatshirt pocket and dial Perel’s number at the kollel.

“Hi Tova, how are you doing?” her perfectly modulated voice vibrates through the quiet in my house.

“Keeping busy with fun stuff, aren’t you? I just got the ad for the N’shei get-together,” I say.

“Yes, that’s the next big thing on the agenda,” Perel agrees. “Looking forward to seeing you there!”

“Yeah, me too,” I say.

“It’s our monthly highlight,” Perel continues. “The biggest social event any of us make it to.” She laughs, and I can hear her swiveling in her chair.

The biggest social event in Penton still features white plastic plates. I smother a smirk as I remember what the setup looked like at the last gettogether.

My breath catches around the words that I now no longer have to force out. “Really?” I eke out after a long moment, trying to keep my tone dispassionate.

“Yes. Have you ever heard of Best Pharmaceuticals?”

Something clicks in my brain, and I nod, although she obviously can’t see me. “I remember that some of the ladies at the N’shei last time said they work there.”

I think of Brochy and her never-ending complaints about leaving her little princess in a stranger’s care for so many hours every day. I remember Mendy’s sobs when I dropped him off by the babysitter at the daycare center.

“What are the hours?” Hey, beggars can’t be choosers, Tova!

“It’s a pretty part-time job, only from nine to two, filling orders. After that, the orders are delivered and this job is over for the day.”

Is this perfect for me, or what? A bubble of hope starts growing inside me.

“Hi, I’m Tova.

Do you want to be my friend? ”

But there’s a fire burning in my stomach that tells me not to dismiss this. Maybe it’s time for a change for me.

“Well, I always wanted to work in a school because the environment is so much nicer. You know, sheltered?” I say it like a question.

“Oh, you don’t have to worry about this place. It’s a women’s only office, really nice heimish boss.”

I hope Menachem likes this job offer. He was always into the school environment and all that. But this job could be a real gamechanger. If I get such a good job, maybe we’ll stay in Penton for longer than just a year.

Wait till I tell Brochy about this job. It’s even shorter hours than what she works now. She’ll wish she hadn’t backed out like that.

I ask Perel for the contact info particulars and take them down conscientiously.

The hope bubble in me is starting to float upwards, filling me with optimism. It’s all going to work out amazing. Once I have a job, everything will fall into place.

In the rosy glow of my dreams, I decide it’s time to head out. The weather’s still pretty nice outside and I have to do my weekly supermarket shopping anyway.

Mendy kicks his feet excitedly when I wheel him out into the pale sunshine. He loves the outdoors.

“Two kollel wives work there,” Perel confirms. “That’s how I heard about this opening in the orders department. Would you be interested in an office job?”

My first reaction is to say no. It’s so not my type to work in an office.

“Yes, I do love my job,” Perel says, “for those reasons too. And I really do enjoy office work. Shoot me if you’d like.”

I rein in my galloping thoughts. The boss hasn’t offered me the job yet, right?

Reva Alpert from next door is standing behind me, a faint smile on her face.

“I’m actually heading there as well,” she says.

“Well, then, please join us!” I say. I’m excited to have company.

Perel laughs. “I find it pretty stimulating, working in an office,” she says.

Reva hesitates a fraction of a second, then nods and smiles, falling into step beside me as we head down our street to the tiny kosher minimart that Penton boasts.

“Yeah, but that’s different,” I protest. “You work in a kollel office, not a pharmaceuticals
