SPRING CITRUS SALAD A beautifully composed salad, combining the freshness of the greens along with tart citrusy notes.

Makes a wonderful season-appropriate salad.

Ingredients: 1 Box greens 3 Grapefruit, peeled and sliced 3 Big oranges, peeled and sliced 1 Cup whole almonds, toasted Juice from a half lemon 1/2 Cup oil 2 Tbsp. sugar, dissolved in 3 tbsp water Pinch of salt Directions: In a bowl, mix greens, grapefruit, and orange slices. Top with toasted almonds.

In a container pour in oil, lemon, sugar water and salt.

Close and shake until mixed well.

Drizzle the dressing.

Enjoy!

SHLISHKAS DELUXE Fluffy and airy morsels of delight.

You might be pleasantly surprised that these are actually better than their chumetz’dig counterparts.

Makes for a perfect classic side to Your Pesach dishes.

Ingredients: 4 Potatoes, peeled and mashed 2 Eggs 1 Cups potato starch 1/2 Tsp. salt 1 Pack ground almonds 1/2 Cup sugar Pinch of salt Directions: Combine all ingredients in a bowl until smooth.

Then roll out in ropes. Cut into 1-inch slices (If it's still sticky add a drop more starch) Once cut into pieces, Roll in a little potato starch.

Bring a large pot of water, salt, and a little oil to a boil. Add the shlishkas in small batches. Cook covered for about 30 minutes.

While it is cooking, toast ground almonds in a pan, and mix with sugar and salt.

When the shlishkas are cooked remove from water, drain, and coat with almond mixture.

Pro Tip: You can make this in advance and simply heat oil in a frying pan, and rewarm.

Mash potato and eggs. Add oil and salt to taste. Add the sautéed onions.

The unexpected and emotional reunion took place in Morah Faigy’s driveway, on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon.

We had crossed paths many times before; I, the old-fashioned, simply dressed working mother of Shevy, and she, the tall, hoodie-wearing mother of Naftali, whose earrings were as ostentatious as her loudly voiced comments.

Until that epic moment, we had, at most, exchanged mumbled greetings as we crossed paths during pickup or drop-off. Because 14 years has a way of shaping or reshaping women, and not just in the physical sense.

The chit-chat had gone on longer than usual on that Tuesday, and to Morah Faigy’s credit, the atmosphere was easy as the conversation flowed.

“Did you mention the Yudelevitch family from 59th Street?” I asked Naftali’s mother, who had mentioned the name in passing.

“Ye-e-s,” she stated emphatically,

in that melodramatic tone of hers.

“The one with a bunch of girls, who went to Bais Liba?”

She nodded.

I tried digesting this. It was disjointing, placing her next to those prim-and-proper, cookiecutter girls.

“That’s right. They’re my aunts.

My mother is a Yudelevich. And I also went to Bais Liba, by the way.”

I felt the wheels turning in my brain, first slowly and then they began whirring at dizzying speed.

“That’s funny. I taught there years ago. So, you’re….”

“Miss Greenwald!”

“Toby Stein!”

Instinctively, Toby covered her face. I gave a sideway glance at Morah Faigy, who watched in utter amazement as the drama unfolded.

“I’m so embarrassed.” Sheepishly, she looked down at her casual attire that screamed of deepseated nonconformity.

“You look okay, Toby. It’s so nice to see you so many years later.”

My mind’s eye sketched a picture of a lanky 4th grade student with blond, curly hair, green-rimmed glasses and a disarming grin. Add on some inches in height and plunk on some pounds and there, that was Toby, alright.

“I also look quite different,” I gave a wry smile, thinking of the thin, well-dressed, makeup-andjewelry-wearing teacher that lay frozen in the recesses of her brain. The well-rounded woman, wearing a velour zip-up top and turban that was me, was a study in contrasts. Eh, but people stay the same.

“Wow, I can’t believe it’s you,” I told Toby, genuinely excited to reconnect with one of my beloved students of yore.

I remembered Toby well. *** “Class dismissed.”

Who said only students jumped for joy at hearing those words?

From the teacher’s side of the desk, I was even more delighted to stretch a bit, to relieve myself of the high-performing role of lecturing and disciplining a group of 27 youngsters.

That respite was not to be.

While the vast majority of the class promptly rose and headed to the backyard or hallway, snacks in hand, some odd girls gravitated to my desk.

Today there were three of them.

stumping me with her penetrating question on Rashi’s explanation.

“I’ll look into it,” I promised, “it’s a great question.” Beaming, she turned around and sprinted off to join her friends for a game of jump rope.

Then there was Faigy, begging me to pardon her for disrupting.

“I’ll be really good from now on.

Please, take off the minus.”

“I’m glad that you regret what you did and you plan to improve. If you manage to control yourself from whispering during class from now on, this single minus won’t make a difference.”

She bit her lip and stared down at her shiny loafers.

“Okay,” she muttered, and dragged her feet back to her desk. “Faigy, what happened?” her closest confidante nudged her, shooting accusing looks in my direction.

They fled the room in search of privacy and I sucked in a heavy sigh.

The clock was ticking and my 15 precious minutes were slipping through my fingers.

But Toby was waiting. She was my steadiest customer.

“Miss Greenwald, you don’t know what happened this morning!” she gushed.

“What happened?”

“A huge bee flew into the window and my little brother started screaming. My mother tried chasing it out and sprayed something at it but it kept buzzing and buzzing.”

“Wow, that sounds scary. Did anyone get hurt?”

“It didn’t bite anyone, but my brother was screaming so loud that my neighbor, who’s a Hatzolah member peeked into the window on his way home from Shul to see what happened.”

The few base-stickers in the classroom grinned as they eavesdropped on Toby’s “story of the day.”

“Is that why you came late?

Because you were so worried about the bee and your brother?”

“Well, sort of. The bee didn’t hurt anyone but my sister in First Grade was running around the table because the bee was right next to her and she bumped into a chair and got a huge boo-boo.

My mother asked me to watch the baby as she took her to my Hatzolah neighbor to make sure it was nothing dangerous. He said it looks like a regular bump and that we should put ice and that if the swelling gets worse, we should check it out.”

“Oy vey!” I said, gathering my loose-leaf and the pile of Chumash sheets on my desk. The teacher’s room beckoned but I patiently waited for her to finish speaking.

“I hope your sister feels better quick. And I hope the bee doesn’t come back again!”

Toby giggled. Before she could start her next tale of woe, I was out the door, to freedom. *** Such was the typical recess for the

freshly-out-of-seminary teacher that was me, more than a decade ago.

I loved my students. I lived my students. I laughed with them.

The curriculum? Well, suffice it to say, the parallel teacher was always two steps ahead. But I taught with passion and I gave each of them my all, as much as my limited capabilities and life experience would allow.

With the passage of time and the crossing of bridges (namely marriage, births, moves, career changes), many of the students faded out of memory.

But Toby, with her bouncing curls that matched her bubbly personality was a name and a person I couldn’t forget.

And here I was, standing face to face with that very same Toby.

No longer was I the larger-thanlife teacher and she, the adulating student. Our children were the best of friends and we were both mothers, familiar with the joys and pains of raising lively toddlers.

I would have wished Toby a good day and regards to her schoolfriends and left it at that.

But she was still bubbly Toby and had a lot more to share.

“I was just talking to Ricky Lowy about you. We were saying how we could count on our fingers how many teachers we liked. How many really cared. And you were one of them.”

Gulp. Me? I didn’t even consider myself as having the ideal classroom decorum. I was still

training on the job, learning the ropes and wrapping my head around the intricacies of the world of nine-year-old girls.

“Yeah. You were so normal. So nice.”

“Thanks, Toby, you made my day. I have such cute memories of those days,” I trailed off.

“Look, I have a picture of you on my phone.”

I blinked.

Toby whipped out her Smartphone, scrolled through her photos at dizzying speed until she triumphantly zoomed into a scan of ancient snapshot featuring none other than Miss Greenwald and Toby.

I was at a loss for words.

Granted, I’m the proud owner of a kosher phone with no phototaking abilities but I do know of the social norms surrounding the frequent taking and exchanging of pictures.

Family, friends, news, vacations – those were worth megabytes of space on a device. But a picture of a teacher with whom you haven’t exchanged a single word in the past decade and then some? That was something astonishing.

True to her 9-year-old self, Toby continued, her innards spilling out on the kitchen floor. Shevy and Naftali munched on pretzels and chased each other giggling, as I listened intently to her long soliloquy.

In a few run-on sentences, Toby painted a picture I would never have dreamed to be true.

“And no one believed me. They thought I was nuts. So, I got punished, even when I told the truth. Did you think I was crazy?” she asked.

“No. I just thought you needed some extra attention. Oh, if I would have known… I was so clueless back then.”

She took Naftali’s hand and led him to her car outside.

“But at least you listened to me.

You treated me like a person.”

I had nothing to say. I was trying to absorb the enormity of what she had gone through and the effect of my tiny acts of caring.

“It’s a miracle I’m okay now.”

I nodded.

“Oh my, I can’t believe I met you.

I’m gonna tell Ricky and Miri I met you. This is so random!”

I watched the car pull away and held Shevy’s hand tight as tears dripped down my cheeks.

I walked home lost in thought, overwhelmed by the enormous impact I had unknowingly made.

And I reminded myself that although, first impressions count, passing judgment on others isn’t my call. The only impression I’m in charge of is the one I make.

She sighs exaggeratedly.

“What did he want this time? A trip to the moon? Clothes stitched with gold and silver?” Debby chortles, squirting some more Palmolive into the cholent pot she’s washing. True, she’s hearing her friend out, but that didn’t mean Shabbos dishes had to sit idly by, listening in on every word.

Not with Pesach looming ever closer.

Shaindel is quiet for two full seconds, then hears a click within her skull.

“I’ve got it! Thank you, Debby! You know when you just need to talk a problem through with someone and then you find the solution on your own? With Hashem’s help, of course.

It’s not that Bentzy is so needy. He’s competitive! I mean, he must have the most Izzy-Dizzy-whateverthese-cards-are-called in his class, build a bigger snowman than his neighbor…” She pauses to think,” And of course he must, MUST, have more sprinkles on his ice cream than any of his siblings!”

“Nah,” Shaindel says, too worked up for laughter. “What does he need gold and silver for? Or a trip to the moon for that matter? None of his friends have it. He needs nosh and toys and car-keys like Shimshy and a Playmobile set bigger than what

“So competition is the issue then.

Makes sense,” Debby nods into the receiver, sending it straight into the sudsy pot of water. Oh, well. Thank you Hashem for rice. *** “Ari and Bentzy, move over,” Shaindel says, dexterously jolting the door open with her double stroller.

Shopping. What a hassle! She’d prayed multiple times already for the most exquisite, matching outfits for all four kids, and desperately mumbled another prayer now. The time has come. Will she find clothing that will enable her to proudly walk down the street with her kids? Not feel like a loser even when she meets her sister-in-law with her welldressed crew?

She begins combing through the clothing racks, with a sigh you’d expect from someone being wheeled out of an operating room.

How does everyone do it? Of course, people tell her she’s lucky to have her kids in sets. Just buy matching for the two boys and something else for the two little girls. She shudders.

Oh, that’s just so not classy. Nerdy.

Why is she even thinking about this ludicrous idea? She jostles her head, shaking away any remnants of that thought.

“Ma, we must finish buying everything today! A new yarmulke, outfit, shoes, even the socks must be today!” Bentzy announces.

Shaindel is surprised. She hadn’t known her five year old shared her

shopping burdens.

“Why everything today?” she asks Bentzy. “We have over three weeks to Pesach!”

“Because Yanky from my class said they’re going to finish all Pesach shopping today,” Bentzy replies, as if stating the obvious.

Shaindel makes a mental note again to teach him not to be so competitive, wisely acknowledging that this is not the time and place.

Ok, it also might have to do with the fact that she’s clueless on how to teach him that.

“Ma, this one!” she hears Ari hollering from the bowels of the store. He comes flying with a black and white top in his hands, clothing flying along with him in every direction.

Shaindel bends down to retrieve the stuff. She bites her lip. She hopes her kids won’t be too rowdy in the many hours this store is wont to take, or she’ll have to leave the accessory shopping for tomorrow. When all the cutest headbands will be sold out already.

“I’m sorry, Ari,” Shaindel says, glancing up at the top he brought.

“This? It would have been gorgeous last year, true. But who still wears black and white in 2021?! Camel this year, nothing else.” Shaindel declares.

Ari is not sure what clothing and animals have in common, but scampers off obediently. He finds a comfortable spot on the floor and begins contemplating options of

“It’s impossible cleaning for Pesach properly in the child-rearing years,” Debby complains to Shaindel two days later.

Shaindel looks over her entire family’s Yom Tov wardrobe yet again. She’s done it! It’s Erev Pesach, and she’d managed to purchase the most magnificent, matching outfits for all four kids. Shabbos, weekday, long, short. She lingers over the camel colored socks, fingering the ruffled organza. How charming!

Of course she wouldn’t admit to anyone the amount of trips around town this elusive sock had required.

No. Shoulders thrown back, she’d innocently say, “I just found this.

Like it?” To which the listener would promptly go on a rant about what a wonderful shopper she was. A wonderful person – Shaindel’s ears hear.

“Problem is, later on you don’t have the energy you have now!” Shaindel giggles companionably. “At least that’s what they say. Not that I have too much energy now either! With Sara’la not feeling well, and Bentzy nagging every day for yet another something that someone’s just got…”

“You’ve got to uproot this competition issue of his while he’s young,” Debby counsels.

“You’re right. Whatever.” Shaindel yawns. She straightens up, starts her vacuum cleaner, and sets to work.

“So where are you up to?” She asks.

“I hope to finish the bedrooms this week. But at the rate it’s going I’m not so sure. You?” “Oh, I’m actually working on a kitchen cabinet now,” Shaindel replies casually.

“What?! What a bablabusta you are!”

Debby compliments her effusively.

Shaindel feels her heart leap. She knew it was a brainstorm to do some cleaning in the kitchen, even though she hadn’t begun on any of the kids’ rooms yet. Now she could just mention to everyone in the same off-hand manner, “I’m up to the kitchen, Baruch Hashem.” Ah,

Ok. So what else? Her house needs a brush-over for chometz, and a bit more cooking too. Nothing major. No guests this Yom Tov. Inadvertently, her mind jumps to Chol Hamoed.

She so looks forward to the picturesque photos she’ll take with her kids all dressed up, with some dazzling waterfalls as backdrop. And she so dreads the yelling, bribing, threatening the photo-taking would surely entail. *** “Maaa!” Shaindel hears from under her covers. She draws them tighter.

Yawn. She’s been up half the night preparing outfits and packing cleanto-eat Pesach food and bibs. What

Ari scrunches up his face. “You have so many pictures already.

Who needs them anyway? I want fun! I want the park!” He looks to his siblings for support.

“Kinderlach, no park.” Shaindel says, a bit too firmly. “We’ll wear our magnificent, matching Chol Hamoed outfits and go somewhere interesting. Somewhere major.

“What?” Shaindel is incredulous.

“It’ll go like this. ‘Where were you Chol Hamoed? In the park.’ That’s so embarrassing! Is that called a Chol Hamoed outing? And what about those gorgeous pictures we can take… the lovely necklaces I bought for the girls…”

She suddenly notices Ari and Bentzi jumping on the bed, chanting, “The park! The park!”

That’s when inspiration strikes.

“You know what?” Shaindel says brightly. “If you all smile nicely to the camera and don’t get yourself dirty, we can go to the park tomorrow!”

The kids nod. Shaindel mentally pats herself on the back. What a win-win!

“Daddy,” Bentzy suddenly pipes up. “Where will we go the third day where all fathers go, so you can tell all your friends and everyone will like you?”

Shaindel blanches. What…?

It’s just a cute way of phrasing things. It has nothing to do with her.

“Kids!”

Shaindel announces suddenly. “We are going to the park today. And everyone chooses their favorite outfit!”
