“The welcoming, with a special surprise. Then, a getting-to-know-you trip,” she said. “Busses are going to be pulling up soon.” She gave a slight sigh.

Breiny looked at her. That sigh was the last thing you would expect from the dynamic, nothing-ever-stops-her Mrs. Goldblum, powerhouse program director at Camp Bnos Leah for twenty years.

“Hey, Shani, everything okay?”

Shani flashed a wide smile. “Amazing!” Then she went to take some Tylenol for her headache, and take care of the other two headaches that were waiting for her-the missing order and the cook.

***

“Mrs. Goldblum, do you want an ice cream?” Henny, one of the head counselors, called from inside the ice cream truck they’d rented as a special surprise for their welcoming day.

“Who says no to ice cream?” Shani called back.

“Coming right up!” Henny said. “One ice cream cone for our super extra special Mrs. Goldblum!”

“Pass this cone to our amazing program director!” Tzippy, the other head counselor, boomed.

“Want one?” she asked Pessy Wercberger, the head camp director, after taking her first lick of creamy vanilla. There were a lot of sprinkles on top. At the end of this cone, her tongue would probably be purple.

“Who says no to ice cream?” Pessy mimicked Shani’s earlier line.

More than one camera was surreptitiously snapped as the two directors stood casually licking their ice cream cones together.

“You’re making their day, Pessy,” Shani chuckled. Seeing their staid camp director licking an ice cream cone with sprinkles made every girl who looked up smile.

“What an easy way to do it,” Pessy laughed, as she took another lick.

Shani looked back at the chattering group of girls, who were alternately posing for pictures, licking ice cream cones, and finding new friends to schmooze with.

Normally, watching the campers jostling around the ice cream truck for their cones would have thrilled Shani. She loved seeing the girls having a great time.

She took a thoughtful lick of her ice cream cone. It was nice, it really was, to see the girls

enjoying themselves. They were going to have a stupendous camp season.

Hopefully the constant crises that kept cropping up this year wouldn’t ruin it.

“It’s been amazing so far, Shani,” Pessy said warmly. “You amaze me every year, how you manage to outdo yourself with your creativity. Especially when we almost had a flop with the entire welcoming theme.”

Almost, because the order had arrived at the last possible second.

“That reminds me,” Shani said. “I have to talk to the singing girls. I think that their stage décor had a major flop and they said they can’t use it. I left them in the staff bunkhouse nearly in tears earlier. I should go see what happened.” Situations, situations. They were nonstop this year. ***

“Mrs. Goldblum?” Rivky approached her with a stricken look on her face.

“What?” Anxiety made Shani’s tone sharp, as she abandoned the head counselors’ special activity she’d been supervising. Rivky and Gittel were her two fabulous mother’s helpers who ensured that her nearly neglected Mutty got some tender loving care while his mother was busy living it up in camp.

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Goldblum,” Rivky said, “but Mutty threw up, and I’m pretty sure he has fever. What should we do?”

“I’m coming,” Shani said automatically. She looked back at the helium balloon-filled dining room. Should she warn Henny and Tzippy? No, it was fine, they would manage without her.

“When did this happen? What was he doing before that?” Shani fired questions at the girl who was trying desperately to keep up as Shani jogged back to her bungalow.

“It-it just happened,” Rivky panted. “We were just getting ready to take him to the playground to watch the kids playing, but he looked really hot. And he was crying and crying, no matter what we did. And then he threw up. So Gittel told me to run get you.”

Shani flew up the wooden steps to her bungalow and creaked open the screen door. Gentle moaning was coming from her kids’ bedroom. Where was Mutty?!

“Hi, Mrs. Goldblum,” Gittel said from her perch on the bed where she was holding a crying Mutty.

“Oh, Mutty,” Shani said as she took her little boy from Gittel’s arms. He was burning up.

Never Gets FazedAlmost

“We rock this camp, we what? WE ROCK!”

The noise filling the dining room was mostly a lot of off-tune, hyper screeching as head counselors and counselors revved up the campers to show some first-day-of-camp spirit. It was pure pandemonium, a choir of shrieks.

Shani Goldblum, standing on the side of the dining room with a small smile on her face, kept on smiling even as she felt a headache creeping up her temples. This was her nachas, her reward for the endless sleepless nights and weeks of preparation.

This year had been an especially difficult preparation year. She’d taken on a new job as assistant principal and extracurricular director. And she’d had a baby just four months ago, right at the beginning of the camp planning season. Baby Mutty was a darling, but he needed just as much attention and care as any newborn

demanded.

All the juggling had made Shani feel like she was nearly drowning, and that had been before she even got to camp, where a whole bunch of situations needed urgent dealing with.

“Looks like a nice bunch this year,” Breiny Davis, the staff director, said in her ear. Shani turned around.

“Yeah,” Shani said absentmindedly. Her mind strayed to the supplies order that hadn’t yet arrived, which meant that not all the souvenirs were ready to be given out yet. And the new cook hadn’t quite understood his instructions about packing up supper to be taken along on the trip. She would have to go take care of both issues.

“What’s the smashing program of the day?” Breiny asked.

“I totally didn’t know what to do,” Gittel admitted as she handed him over. “I just sent Rivky to call you right away.”

“That’s exactly perfect,” Shani said. “He deserves to have his mom when he’s not feeling well, right, Mutty?”

Mutty looked up at her with feverish eyes. Her heart lurched. Weren’t kids supposed to get sick in the winter only?

She felt a prick at her eyelids, which shocked her. It wasn’t her type to get so overwhelmed by a sick kid, but right now, it just felt like too much to deal with.

***

“They said they’re not sending the buses?” Shani shook her head incredulously. “What’s that supposed to mean? We booked these buses months ago! They can’t just cancel like that!”

“They said that two of their buses are by the mechanic, and the other ones are delayed out of state and aren’t going to be back in time.” Henny shrugged as she relayed the message. “Maybe the whole camp should just walk to the rafting place.”

“Don’t be silly,” Shani snapped. “They can’t walk. It’s an hour’s drive away.”

Henny looked surprised. That response was so unlike the easygoing Mrs. Goldblum. Their program director never got fazed by anything.

Pessy Wercberger, huddling together with them to figure out the muddle they were in, also looked surprised. And disturbed. That wasn’t Shani.

“Should we call the other bus companies?” Pessy suggested.

“What’s the point?” Shani asked. “They’re all full. It’s camp season.” She plopped down on the pouf in the corner of Pessy’s office, and leaned back.

“It doesn’t hurt to try, does it?” Pessy said. “I guess,” Shani said limply. “We really better figure something out, or the girls will have our heads. They’re psyched for their first real trip.”

Now Pessy looked downright bothered.

“Maybe we can borrow buses from the boys’ camp,” Tzippy suggested. “Weren’t we thinking of doing that for a different trip that didn’t have buses available?”

“Great,” Pessy said. “Henny, you call the other bus companies and see if they have any buses available by any chance. Tzippy, you call the boys’ camp and ask them if we can borrow buses and how many they have available.”

Both girls scurried off to do the director’s bidding, and Pessy trained her gaze on Shani intently.

“You okay, Shani?” she asked softly.

“Yeah,” Shani muttered. She felt her temples throb. “But honestly, haven’t you found it to be an unusually stressful camp year this year? No buses, almost-flopped breakouts, counselor crises, you know everything that’s been going on. I feel like this year has been nonstop issues.”

Pessy looked at Shani thoughtfully.

“It has been pretty hectic,” she admitted, “but it always is, pretty much. We both know that that’s how it goes. That’s why you’re officially our Mrs. Never-Gets-Fazed by anything,” she smiled wryly.

Shani closed her eyes. “True,” she murmured, cracking a smile at the mention of Pessy’s famous nickname for her. “Let’s go see what Henny and Tzippy have come up with.”

Pessy got up from her chair while Shani struggled to crank herself up from her perch. But the crease between Pessy’s eyebrows hadn’t gone away, and she looked at Shani sidewise, thinking. ***

There was a certain peaceful atmosphere on the campgrounds that could only be felt at three o’clock in the morning, when 250 tired girls were slumbering in their bunkhouses and the only thing that could be heard was crickets chirping.

Shani had just said goodbye to the two sports head girls as they left her bungalow. It had been an intense night, working out the schedule, but they’d finally finished with a workable plan. As she was about to head back up the wooden stairs into her bungalow, she saw Pessy beckoning to her from the picnic table outside her bungalow.

Waving to acknowledge that she’d seen Pessy in the light of the overhead lamp, she looked down at the bundle in her arms. Mutty was finally feeling better, and he was sleeping right now, unlike the last three hours when she’d juggled her baby and the schedule planning at the same time. Perfect, now she could chap a schmooze with her director.

“Long night, huh?” Pessy asked as Shani crossed the grassy field and approached the wooden picnic table.

“Yeah,” Shani admitted. “But there is a certain satisfaction when you finally manage to make it all work. It’s like the feeling after a crazy

hectic day and then the entire camp goes to sleep and it’s all quiet. You know that ‘aaahh’ feeling?” she smiled.

Pessy chuckled. “Best feeling ever,” she concurred. She looked at Mutty nestled in Shani’s arms.

“Is he behaving?”

Shani sighed. “As well as a neglected newborn can behave,” she said. “He’s definitely doing his best to get as much attention as possible.”

“Do you regret taking back your job?” The question surprised Pessy as she let it go.

Shani looked taken aback at the directness of the question. She opened her mouth, and then closed it. Thinking back to the last few months of craziness, with her demanding job at school, a demanding newborn, and the intensity of camp, she wasn’t sure what to say.

“There were a lot of flops and problems this year,” she finally said. “It was definitely harder than I remember.”

Pessy shook her head. “Really? How about that summer a bunch of years ago when you broke your foot? You didn’t blink an eye, and you even came along on our major trip with your scooter! And remember that year when we had constant flooding on the campgrounds and we couldn’t bring down all the activities we were planning to have on grounds? You took the girls to sleep in a skating rink, then planned the whole switcheroo with another camp who was going on an overnight trip. Come on, you tell me, weren’t there other years with much bigger fiascos?”

Shani thought back to the many camp seasons she’d engineered. It was true, there had always been a fair share of mishaps. Maybe some years there had even been more problems than this year.

“It’s true,” Shani admitted. “I don’t know why it still feels like there are so many problems this year.”

Pessy looked at her and weighed her next words. “I think, Shani dear,” she said thoughtfully, “that you are suffering from a classic case of burnout.”

Shani looked dumbstruck.

“What do you mean?” she asked.

“It’s not the problems,” Pessy said. “It’s how you feel. When you’re coming without that fire and creative energy you always have, the problems feel overwhelming. When you’re in that can-do mode, nothing fazes you.”

Shani sat back slowly. “You’re probably right,” she admitted after a moment. “Because

there were many years with lots of flops and situations that didn’t bother me for a second.” She smiled.

“Mrs. Never-Gets-Fazed,” Pessy murmured, with a returning smile.

Shani nodded. She looked down at Mutty thoughtfully.

“You’re saying it isn’t what’s happening around me, it’s what’s happening in me. I’m stam overwhelmed before, so everything that happens feels impossible to deal with.”

“Exactly,” Pessy said, and a bunch of fireflies blinked over her head.

“I never thought I could get burned out,” Shani shook her head. “I can’t believe you’re even saying that.”

“Mrs. Perfectionist Do-it-All,” Pessy wagged her finger jokingly, “even you have limitations.” Shani smiled sheepishly. She was a hard worker, always pushing herself above and beyond what she could handle. Pessy was probably right that she’d overestimated her abilities. It could happen to anyone, couldn’t it?

“But it’s not really so practical for a camp director to get burnout in middle of the summer,” Shani said. “It’s not like I can just take a break right now. There are a million things that need to be done every second.”

“Says who?” Pessy asked. She tapped her fingers against the table, then began speaking quickly. “You are going to sleep late tomorrow morning, and I’m going to arrange for you to have a day off sometime soon to go to town. Without any campers. And we’re going to get you an assistant, ASAP.”

Shani looked at her director in wonder.

“Wow, you’re a powerhouse,” she said. She felt the first real smile of the summer creeping up on her face unbidden. “Nothing fazes you, huh? Not even a burnt-out program director in middle of camp!”

“Hey, I’ve learned from the master Mrs. NeverGets-Fazed for twenty years now, to just figure out a solution and do what needs to be done.” Pessy stopped and thought. “And maybe we’ll change that to Mrs. Almost-Never-GetsFazed. You’re human, too. And allowed to be.”

Shani tilted her head. “You think?” she said.

“Positive,” Pessy said.

And the fireflies blinked again, as if in agreement. •

POISON IVY

Poison ivy rash is caused by an allergic reaction to an oily resin called urushiol (u-ROO-she-ol). This oily resin is in the leaves, stems and roots of poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac.

Wash your skin right away if you come into contact with this oil, unless you know you're not sensitive to it. Washing off the oil may reduce your chances of getting a poison ivy rash. If you develop a rash, it can be very itchy and last for weeks.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of a poison ivy rash include:

• Redness

• Itching

• Swelling

• Blisters

You can also transfer the oil to other parts of your body with your fingers. The reaction usually develops 12 to 48 hours after exposure and lasts two to three weeks.

Causes

Poison ivy rash is caused by an allergic reaction to an oily resin called urushiol. It's found in poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac. This oily resin is very sticky, so it easily attaches to your skin, clothing, tools, equipment. You can get a poison ivy reaction from:

Touching the plant.

• Touching contaminated objects. you might get urushiol on your hands. You might then transfer it to your face or body by touching or rubbing.

• It is possible to get poison ivy rash from someone if you touch plant resin that's still on the person or contaminated clothing.

If you scratch a poison ivy rash, bacteria under your fingernails may cause the skin to become infected. See your doctor if there is any discharge from the blisters. Your doctor might prescribe antibiotics. Serious difficulty breathing and inflammation of the lining of the lungs may result from inhaling urushiol.

When to see a doctor

See your healthcare provider if:

The reaction is severe or widespread

Your skin continues to swell

The rash affects your eyes, mouth or sensitive areas

Blisters are discharging

You develop a fever greater than 100f

The rash doesn't get better within a few days

Prevention

To prevent poison ivy rash, follow

these tips:

• Avoid the plants. Learn how to identify poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac in all seasons.

When hiking, try to stay on cleared pathways. Wear socks, pants and long sleeves when outdoors. If camping, make sure you pitch your tent in an area free of these plants.

• Wear protective clothing. If needed, protect your skin by wearing socks, boots, pants, long sleeves and heavy gloves.

• Remove or kill the plants. Identify and remove poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac from your yard or garden. You can get rid of such plants by applying an herbicide or pulling them out of the ground, including the roots, while wearing heavy gloves. Afterward remove the gloves carefully and wash them and your hands. Don't burn poison ivy or related plants because the urushiol can be carried by the smoke.

• Wash your skin. Within 30 minutes after exposure to urushiol, use soap and water to gently wash off the harmful resin from your skin. Scrub under your fingernails too. Even washing after an hour or so can help reduce the severity of the rash.
