Fit Unique
By Raizy Katz
“Call from: Neuman, Gitty,” announced the caller ID. Zeesy dove for the phone.
“Gitty! You’re back? What’s doing?!” she squealed. Gitty had been in Eretz Yisroel for the past two months. Her daughter had been on bedrest, so Gitty had flown in to help her. “How was your extended vacation?”
“A vacation it definitely wasn’t,” Gitty clarified, “taking care of three adorable but rambunctious little kids, doing housework, and making yom tov. But I enjoyed every second.” They schmoozed a bit longer, catching up on the time Gitty had been away, until finally Gitty brought up the point of her call.
“So listen, I don’t know if you remember, but right before I suddenly flew off to Eretz Yisroel for two months, I had asked you if you were interested in volunteering with me for Chasdei Sarah. It’s literally the most amazing organization, and I thought the work would be up your alley, especially if you have
some spare time now that all the kids are out of the house.”
“You don’t need to convince me,” Zeesy said. “I’m in. Just tell me the time and place and I’ll be there.”
“What about your job?” Gitty was puzzled. “Don’t you have to work it out around your work schedule?”
Zeesy explained her current situation with a sigh. “So unfortunately, that part is not really shayach anymore.” She conscientiously took down the information for Chasdei Sarah, wondering if it would be as nice as Gitty made it sound.
Riffling through the enormous pile of papers, Malky double and triple checked that all the forms were filled out. It is very important to have all the paperwork filled out, the secretary’s voice echoed through her head. It is essential for properly diagnosing your child, and must be completed beforehand to maximize every
RECAP: Rivky acts out on Yom Kippur and Sukkos. Zeesy disapproves of the way Malky is handling her.
minute of your appointment time. Spending her one day a week off from work filling out questionnaires and describing Rivky’s behavior was not her idea of fun, but it was a task that had to be done. She wondered what the result of the appointment would be. Would they diagnose Rivky with tons of labels and ABC’s? Would they provide a medicine that would tame down her behavior and make her as well-behaved as the rest of her class seemed to be?
Her thoughts were interrupted by the jangling of the phone. Seeing the girls’ school was calling, Malky’s heartrate quickened. She grabbed the phone.
The voice on the other line was crisp and professional. “Hi Mrs. Hartman, this is Mrs. Weissblum.”
Uh-oh. If the principal herself was calling, it was not a good sign. Malky swallowed. “H-hi,” she stammered.
“So, we had a bit of an incident here this morning,” Mrs. Weissblum continued. She described another girl taking Rivky’s snack off her desk and gobbling it up. When Rivky noticed what had happened, she grabbed her chair, lifted it up, and threw it at the other girl before the morah could stop her. The poor little girl had been picked up and rushed to the urgent care to be evaluated for any injuries, most significant of which was a possible concussion, since the chair had banged directly into her head.
I can’t believe Rivky hurt another girl so badly. I feel so bad for the girl, and for her mother. I would never want to get a call from the school that my daughter was injured.
I can’t say I’m surprised, though. Seeing Rivky’s interactions more often than anyone else, it was kind of inevitable. When she is provoked, there is no reasoning with her. She is like a bull charging full speed ahead, intent on resolving the situation to her own liking, the way she feels it should be.
It’s hard to process, Malky finally admitted to herself. Because she is my daughter and I love her, and I don’t want to hear about her doing such terrible things.
Passing by her parents’ house, Malky decided, on a whim, to stop in and say hello.
“Hi, Malky! What’s doing?” if her mother was surprised to see her, she did not let on.
Anxiety, hope, and relief all mingled inside her.
“Unfortunately, Rivky needs to be picked up immediately, and I cannot allow her to return to school until some sort of improvement is seen. Did you have her evaluated yet?”
“I have an appointment for tomorrow morning,” Malky said.
“Great. Hopefully that will help clarify things, and it’s very possible they will recommend trying out medication. Let me know when you have the results of the evaluation and a treatment plan, and we can discuss Rivky coming back to class.”
Fingers trembling, Malky pressed “end” and tried to slow her breathing. After a minute, realizing she needed to go pick up Rivky, she rose and began mechanically preparing to leave the house. Once she left, the crisp air outside helped clear her brain and organize her thoughts.
“I got a call from the principal. Rivky threw a chair at another girl, and now they’re not letting her come back to school until something changes,” Malky blurted out.
Her mother, sensing she wanted to share more, responded with a noncommittal “Mmm”.
Malky forged on. “Sometimes I feel so… confused. Like, she’s my daughter, and I love her, but then she does all these crazy things, and it’s like, where does that come from? How could she do such things?
How can I accept her like that?”
“Malky, you have to realize that Rivky is not technically acting like this ‘on purpose.’ Hashem created Rivky with these specific challenges. Your job, as her mother, is to love her and accept her, and also to help her overcome her challenges, whether by encouraging her, getting her whatever help she needs, or just being there for her.
It’s not easy. It’s really not. It’s one of those things that sound simple when you say them, but playing it out in reality is much more difficult. But I think you’re on the right track. You’re getting her evaluated, right?”
“Yeah, the appointment is tomorrow,” Malky said.
“So hopefully that will help you figure out even more ways to help her. You’re doing a great job, Malky.
You’re an amazing mother.”
“Thanks, Ma,” Malky smiled. “Now I better run and pick up Rivky.”
The drive home from the evaluation was quiet. Rivky was busy eating all the nosh she had been bribed with as a reward for cooperating, and Shulem and Malky were each lost in their thoughts and unwinding from the appointment.
“That was intense, no?” Shulem said, breaking the silence.
“Yes, it definitely was. But I am so happy we did it. She was totally not fazed by Rivky, which means she sees kids like her often. I hope she’ll be able to help her.”
Malky wondered what the results would be. Anxiety, hope, and relief all mingled inside her. She worried that whatever was recommended would be too intense, that it wouldn’t work, that it would be difficult. However, she was hopeful that this was the beginning of a journey to help her daughter, and relieved that they had finally taken action. Rivky clearly needed something more than what she was already getting, and Malky was determined to equip her with the tools she needed to succeed.
A week later, Shulem and Malky were back in the psychologist’s office. Malky twisted her ring around and around, trying not to think about anything, but scary possibilities kept popping up in her brain. What if Rivky was diagnosed with some terrible, horrible condition? She focused on taking deep breaths and tried to relax.
The psychologist shuffled around some papers, then looked up directly at them.
“Mr. and Mrs. Hartman?”
“Yes, that’s us,” Shulem replied. Malky was ready to explode from tension.
“So, after considering all aspects, including all the questionnaires, filled out by both yourselves and Rivka’s teachers, and speaking to you and observing Rivka at the appointment last week, I believe I have come to a conclusion.”

The Chinese-English dictionary turned out to be superfluous when it emerged that the Chinese taxi driver spoke a decent English.
“I bring lot of people to market,” he said.
Shimmy sat in the front seat with his hand luggage on his lap, alternately glancing out at the streets of Beijing and at the note in his hand.
“Why are the windows closed?”
“Sort of?”
“I lived in America until I was fourteen, and then we moved to Israel.” Was he just imagining that the skinny youth on the street corner was staring at him? It was possible that, as a Western stranger, he was just attracting attention. On the other hand, there was a chance he was a pickpocket; Gedalya had warned him about pickpockets who abounded in these kinds of places.
“Soon is a smell of fish. Not Chinese person…not like smell of fish.”
Shimmy was ready to argue about the accuracy of this statement, but a moment later he discovered two things: Firstly, they were apparently very close to the fish market already, and second, Chinese fish were not at all like his mother’s gefilte fish, or Batya’s tilapia. Not the smell, at least.
The driver walked quickly, without turning around. Shimmy hurried after him, gripping the handle of his suitcase tightly and trying not to step in places where the sidewalk was especially dirty. The smell of fish grew stronger as they drew closer, making him want to get to his destination as fast as possible.
“You want to meet in the market Shio Ching, the translator.” The driver stopped at a place where the road suddenly ended. “I bring lot of people to him. He knows also Hebrew a little, and he works with Israelis.”
“Yes, I know.” He looked out to the narrow street. “What is this?”
“This is the market. Here no cars go in. But you want to go to Shio, yes? I take you,” the driver announced. He unbuckled his seatbelt, and in a flash, he was out of the little car. Shimmy followed him, watching as he locked the door of the taxicab. The local children were watching them curiously.
“You are from Israel?” the driver suddenly asked. “Sort of.”
People were bustling all around them, some of them wearing face masks. Shimmy recalled that he had such a mask in his pocket. Maybe it would filter out the odor a little? But before he had a chance to stop and take it out, his escort announced, “Here is Shio Ching.” He said it with pride, as if it was his only son, and pointed straight ahead.
Behind one of the stalls was a young, husky Chinese man, wearing an apron and talking to a customer. The customer raised his voice, and the seller answered angrily; they looked like they were arguing. Two others stood near them, observing the dispute with interest.
“Who is Shio Ching?” Shimmy asked.
“Here, the seller.”
“The seller? A fish seller?”
Rochelli was a תלעב הבושת from Eretz Yisroel. She and her husband were invited to be with a frum family for Shabbos. Before Kiddush, Rochelli was asked to put on a Tichel to cover her hair. Curiously she asked the wife, “how come you don’t cover your hair”? The women explained to her, that her head is already covered with a wig…
When they discussed why the challahs are covered, Rochelli asked “if we can cover our hair with hair, can we also cover challahs with challahs”?
Dear Women, let us remember:
By wearing a proper head covering, you are making a great Kiddush Hashem!
rightward toward a building covered with small pink stones— “is your hotel. Two minutes in the taxi, and we’ll be there.”
“A hotel so close to the fish market?” Shimmy wondered and coughed pointedly. “What about the smell?”
“Close the windows, and turn on the air conditioner,” the other man replied.
They reached the car. And just as Shio Ching had said, two minutes later, they were there.
The driver brought the luggage trolley into the lobby, and Shimmy sighed with relief when he discovered that it did not smell inside. Or perhaps he’d just gotten used to the smell?
The hotel was clean and tastefully decorated, and had a Western feel to it. After checking in and making arrangements with Shio Ching for their meeting the next day, which would be in the hotel lobby, Shimmy went up to his room on the ninth floor. The elevator was very swift, and his room was the first one in the hallway. His heart pounding a bit, Shimmy pressed the electronic card to the door, and it clicked open. He walked inside and let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding when he saw that the windows were closed and the room had a pleasant scent.
He pushed his bags under the dresser that was against the wall, and suddenly realized how starving he was. But Batya was probably waiting to hear that he’d found the interpreter, and that he was doing okay. He hadn’t called her since he’d left the airport.
As he rummaged in his suitcase for the can of beans in tomato sauce, he called Batya. But she didn’t even ask where or how he was. All she said was, “Why did I have to go out to the grocery now?!”
“Nu, so why did you go?” “To buy formula for Shmuli.”
“Okay, so there’s your answer.”
“But why now?” She sighed. “Of all the people in the world, who
did I have to meet there? Chumi! She came in from Yerushalayim and was standing in our local grocery, at the exact time that I went in there.”
“Chumi? Why in the world was she in Beitar?”
“She came in to study with a friend or something. Whatever. But once she saw me, she invited me for this Shabbos. And I don’t want to go there without you.
Aside from the fact that if they want me to come, it makes more sense for your mother to invite me, not Chumi.”
“But my mother never invites people. If you want to come, you call her.”
“Well, do I have to go?”
“Of course not, if you don’t want to.”
“Good, so I don’t want to.”

How many pairs of shoes does one woman need?
The floor in my closet is already full. And that’s after I gave away two pairs, and put one pair—a really strange one—in a box downstairs in the front of the house. The box disappeared in less than an hour, and I’m afraid some Filipina or Romanian woman is now walking around wearing those shoes. Because which frum woman would wear such odd and ugly footwear? The fact that I bought them doesn’t mean I ever liked them; it just means that I bought the pair without really seeing what I was purchasing.
It was after another frustrating conversation with Yudi and Ruchi, of course.
There’s nothing like some retail therapy to calm an exasperated mother.

Bridging the Gap Between Parents and Teens.
WHY IS EVERYTHING SUCH A STRUGGLE?
SHIFRA FRIED
There’s a stage of motherhood no one really talks about.
A shift so quiet you don’t notice it at first… until suddenly even the simplest parts of parenting feel heavier than they used to.
You wake up thinking, Today I’ll stay calm. Today I’ll connect. Today I won’t get pulled into the storm. And then the day begins.
A door closes harder than you expected. A simple question turns into a debate.
A child who used to share everything now gives half-answers, or none at all.
A preteen melts down over something tiny that somehow becomes enormous. Everything feels like a struggle. Not because you’re doing something wrong, but because you’re adjusting to a new version of your child-and a new version of yourself. You’re trying to stay close without crowding. Give
space without feeling pushed out. Stay steady while walking on ground that keeps shifting.
And in the middle of it, there’s a quiet ache you rarely say out loud.
Not grief, but an awareness that the ease you once had has changed, and you’re figuring out how to reconnect in new ways.
Some days you question yourself:
Why does this feel so hard?
Why am I this reactive?
Why does everything feel personal?
Why am I doubting instincts that used to guide me so clearly?
But here’s the part you forget: You show up anyway. You keep trying anyway. You love them anyway.
And that love-steady, imperfect, unconditional-carries more weight than you realize. I had a moment recently that brought this into focus.
My daughter-in-law, now deep in the world of little ones, said to me with this mix of exhaustion and wonder:
“I never realized how much you still care. How you still think about your kids. How much energy you still spend on themeven now that they’re adults.”
She watches me worry about my son-her husband-and suddenly she sees it.

This question not only affects your hemoglobin A1C but also improves blood Pressure, cholesterol, mental health, and overall well-being.
Low-carbohydrate diet and physical activity are not only effective ways to reduce a borderline A1c, but they can also, in some cases, reverse early type 2 diabetes.
Insulin resistance is a state where the body's cells are unable to use insulin to absorb glucose (insulin is the hormone that is used to move glucose into cells where it can be broken down and used as energy), leading to elevated glucose levels and potentially type 2 diabetes. This can happen for several reasons, including lack of exercise and/or excess sugar

protects the heart) and is great for mental health and overall well-being. The goals of exercise should be 150 minutes of aerobic exercise (biking, swimming, steps, brisk walking etc), but however much you are able to achieve is helpful. As far as diet, the main goal should be to choose complex carbohydrates over simple carbohydrates whenever possible. Examples of simple carbohydrates are sugary foods and drinks, and white flour. These carbohydrates break down quickly and cause spikes in sugar that will raise the A1c more compared to complex carbohydrates that break down much slower and won't raise the glucose levels as much. These carbohydrates are found in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and beans. Keep in mind that whole grains are also helpful in lowering LDLs (bad cholesterol).
To recap, avoid foods that will give you rapid spikes in sugar levels; healthy proteins, vegetables, and whole grains are healthier options. Physical activity with a goal of reaching 150 minutes a week is optimal, but whatever you can accomplish is ok. And remember, if the exercise doesn't make you sweat, then it isn't hard enough!!

If you loosen up after praise, it might simply be your system asking for balance and relief, not more discipline.
Try interpreting praise as: “People think I look healthy

I would also tell you to reflect on whether you actually still need to diet. It’s possible that your instincts are trying to tell you something: Maybe you really do look great. Maybe you’ve reached a point where more dieting isn’t necessary—just self-care and maintenance.
Sometimes “slipping up” is your brain’s way of saying,

Chanukah Scene Cookie
1. Using your black or dark brown, outline the rectangular shaped cookie (or your chosen shape!)
2. Flood in black, or your dark color. Leave to dry overnight or approx an hour.
3. Using your red outline icing, draw the outline of the curtains. Dry a few mins.
4. Flood the curtains in red. Dry 1 hour.
5. Using your yellow outline, add the ties of the curtains. You might need to go over it again if the black is too overpowering.
6. Pipe 8 tiny teardrop flames with a Shamesh a little higher. Immediately add a red dot in middle.
7. Pipe a blue Menorah under the flames.
This is the most popular and exciting cookie to decorate. You don’t need a specific cookie cutter for this, you can use a rectangle, square or circle! Let your imagination run wild, or follow the steps shown! And if you don’t have a rectangle cookie cutter, you can use a pizza cutter or a smooth knife!
Colors Needed:
Outline: Pink, Blue, Green, Yellow, Brown, Black (or dif shade brown) Flood: Pink, Blue, Brown, Black (or dif shade brown)
8. Using your light brown, pipe a dot over each menorah branch.
9. Pipe a dark brown dot to join the Menorah and flames.
10. Pipe red lines over the curtains to add emphasis.
11. For the Dreidel first pipe a pink square, slanting. Add a yellow triangle underneath and a brown handle on top.
12. Pipe a tower of doughnuts, made of brown dots using light brown outline icing. Add a darker brown dot on each.
13. Add white steam coming out of the doughnuts
14. Pipe a yellow jug at the side of the Menorah. Add the words “Chanukah” in green script lettering
Enjoy your Chanuka scene cookie!
