Hemoglobin A1c is a blood test used to diagnose and monitor diabetes. How does it work? What does it tell you? What is hemoglobin? Hemoglobin is a protein found in red blood cells that is responsible for the transport of oxygen to the lungs, where the oxygen is released. Hemoglobin also binds to glucose in the blood cell in a manner that is irreversible. This means that once glucose binds to hemoglobin, it cannot detach. Since blood cells have a lifespan of about 120 days, measuring the amount of glucose that is attached to the hemoglobin will give you a good picture of a threemonth glucose average.

The hemoglobin A1C is considered the gold standard blood test for diabetes and is used to diagnose and monitor diabetes. The normal range of A1C is less than 5.7, from 5.7 to 6.3 is considered prediabetes, and 6.4 or higher is considered diabetes. Recommendations for diabetes are complex and need close monitoring and treatment, as this disease can cause serious illness and complications if not managed well.

My A1c came back high — what does this mean for my health, and what steps (medication, lifestyle changes, or follow-up tests) should I take to bring it down safely?

What we will talk about is the pre-diabetic patient. Prediabetes and gestational diabetes are both scenarios where the individual is at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Patients with prediabetes can prevent developing diabetes by controlling their glucose levels with a low-carb diet, weight loss, and exercise.

Once a patient is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, it is very unusual and difficult to reverse, and usually requires lifelong medication and monitoring. However, people with prediabetes will very often be successful in reducing the A1c to a normal level with good lifestyle changes.

If you were told that your A1c was elevated, speak to your doctor, see a dietitian or exercise trainer, and come up with a plan to improve your health and prevent diabetes complications.

RECAP: Rivky misbehaves by shofar blowing and again later by the meal.

Ahhhh, the couch. It was soft and yummy and she could sink deep, deep into it. Malky burrowed in a little deeper and tried to ignore the pangs of hunger, mouth dry with thirst, and dizziness that swept over her. Snatches of conversation and high-pitched squeals of laughter floated around her, but she didn’t have the energy to tune it in. Yom Kippur was probably the hardest day of the year for a young mother, she mused. You had to fast, but your husband was in shul the entire day, and you had no help with the kids. You couldn’t even get a teenage girl to help you, even for pay, because they were all busy davening too!

She was lucky so far, though. She had bought new dolls for Rivky and Ruchie, and they were playing nicely together in their room. Leiby had just fallen asleep, and Malky decided it was the perfect time for a nap, which would hopefully give her strength to get through the rest of the day. She closed her eyes and drifted off into a peaceful slumber.

BAM! A heavy thud ripped through the house and jolted her awake. Malky jumped up off the couch and ran to investigate. Entering the girls’ room, she was struck by the utter chaos. There were clothes strewn all over the floor. The chest of drawers, which usually housed all their clothes, was lying on its side on the floor, empty drawers swung halfway open.

“Wha-what is going on over here?” Malky spluttered. Feeling dizzy, she perched on the end of Rivky’s bed.

“Ruchie made the mess,” Rivky announced, bounding out of the room.

“I did not!” Ruchie protested, then burst into sobs. Malky reached over and patted Ruchie’s head, then stroked her hair.

“I believe you, zeesekeit. Do you want to tell me what went on over here? Why is the room such a mess?”

“We needed clothes for the dollies,” Ruchie sniffled. “We didn’t have enough so Rivky said we should take

Then she swung off the counter, took the tub of ice cream, and bolted from the room. Malky tried catching her before she ran out, but Rivky was too quick for her. The slam of the door echoed through the house, and Malky panicked for a moment, until she realized it was the door to the bedroom. She knew she should really go after Rivky, give her some well-deserved discipline, and confiscate the tub of ice cream before it dripped all over the room, including the clothes in disarray all over the floor. But she just didn’t have the energy.

Malky knocked on the door and let herself in.

“Good yom tov, Bobby!” Rivky sang out, her pigtails dancing.

“Good yom tov, Bobby,” Ruchie whispered, always the shy one.

Malky settled Leiby on the floor with some toys, then sat down on a kitchen chair after her shvigger waved away her offers to help set up.

“Everything is basically ready, I’m just putting a few last-minute touches. You sit down, I know it’s not easy being a mother of little kids, you deserve to relax for a few minutes.”

Malky kept up a steady, light conversation with her shvigger while enjoying the pampered feeling of not having to prepare anything. She reveled in the peaceful atmosphere.

“AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!” an ear-splitting shriek erupted

from the direction of the sukkah. Malky ran to see what had happened. Her shvigger had been setting out the fish, she hoped everything was okay with her.

“Rivky! Come down from there RIGHT NOW!” Zeesy was shaking from fright. Malky looked up to see Rivky perched on the top of the sukkah frame, calmly staring down at them. She had removed a portion of Schach to create an opening for herself to look down through.

Panic rushed through her. Since she was afraid of Rivky falling and getting seriously injured, Malky decided to save the discipline for later. “Rivky, Mommy’s giving out nosh now,” she informed her. Rivky quickly swung down, reminding Malky of the chimpanzees they had seen in the zoo.

“You’re giving her a treat after acting like this?” her shvigger’s disbelieving gaze bore into her.

Malky bristled with indignation, but chose not to respond, sensing her explanations would not be understood and would only be met with contempt. Instead, she headed into the kitchen to distribute treats.

When Zeesy returned to the kitchen, the easy camaraderie of earlier turned to an awkward stiltedness. Malky was relieved when the men finally arrived home. She filled Shulem in on what had occurred, and the men hurried outside to inspect the damage.

Zeesy gave Malky a hard look. “Don’t you think Rivky should know not to climb up so high, and not to ruin a sukkah? I mean, at this age…” she let the

thought dangle.

Malky flushed. A sense of failure slithered up in her. A memory rose up, unbidden: the night she had gotten engaged, how proud she had felt that she had been chosen by her shvigger for her precious only son. She had been introduced to a plethora of family and friends, and the delight in her shvigger’s voice made her beam and blush simultaneously.

“This is Malky, the most amazing girl out there. You know I would only pick the best for my Shulem, right?”

She had resolved to do everything in her power to keep it that way. She would be the best wife and mother, and her shvigger would only grow happier and more proud of her.

“W-we’re actually taking Rivky to get evaluated,” Malky blurted out, desperate to take the blame off of herself. Maybe, if her shvigger understood that there was an underlying issue here, and it was not just a result of bad parenting, she could go back to being the most amazing daughter-in-law in her shvigger’s eyes.

“Evaluation, shmaluation. All these new-fangled ideas. Children need discipline, not coddling.” Zeesy quickly dashed Malky’s hopes. Malky suddenly remembered why she had avoided telling her about it in the first place. She had been afraid her old-school chinuch style shvigger would not be able to understand. And she had been correct.

“The school actually recommended it,” Shulem interjected smoothly. “Rivky’s behavior is out of line, and much more difficult than the other girls in the class. They felt Rivky needs help in order to thrive and succeed in the classroom.”

Malky shot a grateful look at Shulem, amazed how he always managed to be in the right place at the right time. Shulem then switched the topic with practiced ease, asking how Sury and Esti were doing in Eretz Yisroel, and Malky was off the hook. For now. She tried to tune in, but her thoughts kept going back to the evaluation looming ahead.

Bridging the Gap Between Parents and Teens.

ALWAYS WITH FRIENDS, NO TIME FOR FAMILY

It can feel like things change in a home almost instantly. The child who used to linger, chat, and stay close begins spending more time in their own world. And before a parent has time to process it, home just doesn’t feel the same anymore. What once felt constant and shared now feels different. These changes often appear in small, everyday mo-

ments rather than dramatic events. A conversation that used to last minutes now ends in seconds. A hallway that once echoed with chatter is quieter. The teen moves in and out of the house quickly, barely pausing to connect. For parents, these ordinary moments become powerful reminders that their relationship is shifting, even if it’s healthy and natural.

Why the Sudden Pull towards Friends?

Even when it feels sudden, the shift toward peers is a natural part of growing up. As teens mature, their social world expands. Friends begin to play a central role in how they see themselves, what matters to them, and where they feel they belong. Their group of friends becomes the place where they feel understood and free to be themselves.

From a teen’s perspective, spending more time with friends isn’t a rejection of home, it’s simply a stage of development. It feels important, exciting, and urgent. For parents, especially in homes built on warmth, closeness, and shared routines, the change can feel jarring. The bond is still there, but the way it is expressed looks different, and the shift can feel painful even when it’s completely normal.

What Do Parents Really Feel?

Parents often experience a mix of emotions as they notice the shift:

• Sadness — missing the easy, everyday moments of connection.

• Confusion — unsure what triggered the distance.

• Guilt — wondering if they could have handled something differently.

• Worry — about influences, choices, or the unknown path ahead.

reality of a normal developmental stage.

What Actually Changed?

What changed is simple: teens grow. As they mature, their inner world expands. What once felt familiar and steady at home now coexists with a strong pull toward independence, friends, and exploration. Teens rarely notice how deeply this shift lands on their parents—or how their growing independence creates a quiet ache that parents often struggle to put into words.

The change isn’t about rejection or disconnection. It’s about identity. Teens are discovering who they are outside the family, testing boundaries, and learning what it means to belong to a world beyond home. Their priorities shift, their social circles become more central, and the way they communicate their love changes too. What once came naturally - long conversations, lingering at home, spontaneous moments of connection—now must compete with a wider world of experiences and relationships.

For parents, it can feel like the rules of connection have suddenly changed. The presence that once signaled closeness is no longer guaranteed, and small gestures that used to feel effortless now seem rare. But even as the expression of closeness shifts, the foundation of love, trust, and shared history remains. The bond endures, though it looks different from what parents have grown accustomed to.

Finding a New Balance.

Parents can’t stop this stage of growth, but they can shape the tone of the home and maintain connection:

• Keep the home open and welcoming. Warmth feels better than pressure.

HEARTY VEGETABLE SOUP

A cozy, wholesome soup brimming with garden-fresh flavor — simple ingredients simmered into pure comfort. The tomato paste and white pepper add a hidden layer of flavor.

Ingredients:

2- 3 tablespoons oil, for sauteing

1 white onion, diced

5 cloves garlic, diced

2- 3 celery stalks, diced

1 parsnip, peeled and diced

4 large carrots, peeled and diced

1 Yukon Gold potato, diced

2 tablespoons salt, plus more to taste

½ teaspoon white pepper (optional)

1 tablespoon tomato paste

4 cups chicken broth (or 4 cups water mixed with 2-3 tablespoons chicken soup mix- to keep it parve)

Directions:

1. Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and saute until translucent.

2. Stir in the garlic and cook for 2 minutes, until fragrant.

3. Add celery, parsnip, carrots, potatoes, salt, white pepper, and tomato paste. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes to release flavor.

4. Stir in the chicken broth, then add enough water to cover the vegetables (about 4 additional cups).

5. Bring the soup to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 1-2 hours — the longer it simmers, the deeper the flavor.

6. Keep as a chunky vegetable soup or blend with an immersion blender until smooth and creamy. Serve warm.

DAIRY WHITE VELVET SOUP

Ingredients

4-5 tablespoons butter

1 white onion, diced

4 cloves garlic, diced

¼ cup flour

3 cups water

2 cups milk

1-2 Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cubed

1 (24-ounce) bag frozen cauliflower

1 ½ tablespoons salt

¼ teaspoon black pepper or white pepper

Directions:

1. In a large pot, heat the butter over medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 5 minutes, until softened. Add the garlic and saute for another 2 minutes.

2. Whisk in the flour and cook until golden. Slowly add water and milk, whisking to combine.

3. Stir in the potatoes, cauliflower, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil, then lower heat. Simmer for about 50-60 (make sure potatoes are soft).

4. Using a hand blender, pulse the soup until creamy (add some more water if you prefer a thinner consistency). Serve warm.

PRETZEL BREADSTICKS

Crisp on the outside, tender on the inside — these breadsticks are the ultimate companion for a hearty bowl of soup.

Ingredients:

2 ½ teaspoons yeast

1 teaspoon brown sugar

3¾ cups flour

¾ cup apple juice

½ cup warm water

3 tablespoons olive oil

2 teaspoons salt

3 cups water

3 tablespoons baking soda

1 Egg, beaten for egg wash Coarse / flaky salt

Directions

1. In a mixing bowl, combine the yeast and warm water and let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes.

2. Add the brown sugar, oil, and flour. Mix well and add the salt. Let the mixture rise for an hour.

3. Divide the dough into 10 equal portions and form them into long sticks (for smaller sticks, you can cut each stick in half to get 20 sticks).

4. Place the sticks on a baking sheet, cover, and let rise for an additional 30 minutes.

5. Preheat the oven to 425°.

6. In a large pot, bring the water and baking soda to a boil.

7. Using a slotted spoon, slip some of the sticks into the boiling water and cook for 30 seconds on each side.

8. Transfer the sticks to a rack to let them dry and then repeat with the remaining sticks. Once dry, transfer the sticks to a lined baking sheet.

9. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle them with coarse / flaky salt.

10. Bake for 14-15 minutes, turning over after about 8-9 minutes, until they are dark golden brown.

11. Remove from oven and serve warm.

2. Outline the bottom panel of the dreidel in black or brown. Repeat with the top panel. Dry 10 min.
