I was on an amazing weight loss plan up until now. I have two worries: 1) I am a very disciplined person by nature and work very well with routine. (Some people call me rigid…) I am very worried that over the long summer days, with all my kids on different schedules, and with bedtime pushed up etc. my food will be all over the place and I will gain a lot of weight over the summer season. 2) I am worried about the feeling of burnout… How can I keep myself motivated this season? I feel like I am watching my weight forever!

Many people are having these thoughts running through their minds at this time of year. I feel like your second question will give you the answer you are seeking. This article is geared towards anyone looking to optimize their health and wellness this season. Whether you are going upstate, traveling with family, or just staying put, read on!

If you are a person that is set in your ways, very disciplined and craves routine, then it is time that you embrace change. Change is good for you! Eating the same foods, day in and day out, season in and season out, is…. boring!

Boring will lead to burnout!

Hashem created our bodies to work in sync with the seasons. In the wintertime we crave hearty and wholesome foods, hence the wholesome foods that are in-season in the wintertime. In the summertime, as our bodies crave and need extra hydration, Hashem sends hydrating foods such as peaches, plums and watermelon our way. We humans, need variation, color, excitement and fun! Utilizing fruits and veggies that are in season, and thinking of new lunch and dinner ideas, will help you face this season with excitement, diminishing feelings of burnout. If you have the opportunity to grill outdoors this season, go for it! Grilling is an amazing way to get your lean proteins in a fast and easy way.

Optimize this opportunity! Craving refreshing drinks? Get some mint

leaves, lemon slices, ice and some sweetener and make yourself limonana! Grew some herbs on your windowsill this season? Use them on your fish and cutlets! In a nutshell- be creative! Look at the bounty and color surrounding you this season and use them to your advantage. I strongly recommend menu planning in advance by scouting out some websites and some new cookbooks for refreshing ideas.

If you are being away this summer, here are some pointers to focus on: Being that many of us have changing schedules these days, don’t let yourself skip any meals.

Following a structure of breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, supper and no food after supper is very important to maintain your health, weight, or to continue losing your weight, (if that is your goal this summer).

For those of you going upstate, or for those of you who are lucky to have access to nature walks and a pool, go for it! Go walking with a friend in the early morning or as the sun is going under. Go for a swim or join an aqua aerobics class!

Flex your muscles in ways that you cannot get them flexed when out of the water! Feel invigorated as you swim under the sun and cherish that lightweight feeling.

Remember, sometimes less is more.

It is not about how many laps you do, rather about what the quality of your laps are. Slow and focused wins the race.

If you are getting to socialize

this summer by sitting out with friends, whether it is sitting in the bungalow colony circle or by going out with friends for lunch, use this opportunity to sit out with healthier food choices.

Spruce up your salads. Explore different protein ideas. Make a salad bar with your neighbors or countrymates. Enjoy eating your lunch in a different environment.

Enjoy the way you eat your lunch….

Eating with friends is different than eating on your own.

Late night snacking can become an issue when you’re are sitting out with friends or even if you are spending your summer home, waiting for your teens to come home from late night trips. Don’t let that happen to you. Snacking mindlessly at night leads to…. weight gain. Eat a hearty supper and drink some ice tea at night if you are feeling like you need that pick-me-up.

For some reason, suppers become laxer in the summertime. That is ok, but focus on having all your food groups met, even when supper is a more relaxed event. If you are not cooking one night, have some eggs with cheese as your protein, paired with some salad, olive oil and carb of your choice for a filling meal.

The bottom line is, use this summer season to your advantage by going with the in-season foods, by inspiring yourself with new menu ideas, by enjoying the outdoors and yes… also by enjoying the lack of routine!
