QIs
roll healthy and ok to consume while on weight loss?
ATurkey roll is a processed meat product made primarily from turkey meat. Unlike whole roasted turkey, turkey roll is often made from ground or chopped turkey meat that is seasoned and sometimes mixed with other ingredients before being shaped and cooked. Turkey roll can be a safe and healthy option when consumed often, but this depends on several factors, including its ingredients, preparation, and the overall diet of the consumer. Here are some aspects to consider:
High Sodium: Processed meats, including turkey roll, can be high in sodium, which is used for preservation and flavor. High sodium intake is associated with an increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Opting for low-sodium varieties or consuming turkey roll in moderation can help mitigate this risk.
Lean Protein: Turkey is naturally high in protein and lower in fat compared to red meats.
Low Fat: Lean turkey rolls are lower in fat, especially saturated fat, which makes them a healthier option.
Vitamins and Minerals: Turkey is a good source of essential vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins (like B6 and B12), selenium, and zinc, which play vital roles in energy metabolism, immune function, and overall health.
Calories: A lean turkey roll tends to be lower in calories compared to fatty meats like salami and pastrami.
Fillers: Fillers such as starches, soy protein, or breadcrumbs are sometimes added to processed meats to bulk them up and reduce costs. These can add unnecessary carbohydrates and calories. While not necessarily harmful, fillers can add extra
calories, carbohydrates, and sometimes allergens to the product, making it less healthy overall.
Nitrates and Nitrites: These are commonly added to processed meats as preservatives and to maintain color. High intake of nitrates and nitrites has been linked to health issues.
Look for labels indicating “no added nitrates or nitrites” and “minimal fillers.”
Let’s compare turkey roll to salami and pastrami for 100 grams: (see below)
Based on this, why is turkey better for weight loss?
Lower Fat: Lean turkey roll has significantly less fat, particularly saturated fat, making it a healthier option.
Fewer Calories: Lower fat content means fewer calories, aiding in weight loss.
High Protein: High protein content helps maintain muscle mass and promotes satiety, which can help control hunger.
Fewer Additives: Opting for turkey rolls with minimal or no additives reduces exposure to potentially harmful compounds.
To summarize and answer your questions, turkey roll, especially when made from lean, minimally processed turkey, is a healthier option compared to fatty, processed meats like salami and pastrami. It offers high protein with lower fat and calorie content, making it an excellent choice for those aiming to lose weight or maintain a healthy diet. However, it is essential to choose products that are free from excessive fillers and additives like nitrates to maximize health benefits.
WE
THURS-
ORDER TILL TUESDAY
Gitty plunked her looseleaf down on the dining room table and strode to the kitchen for a snack. Start Fresh cookies? No. Breadsticks? Not today. Chocolate chip granola bars? Ah! That was what she deserved after sweating through 11 midterms.
“So it’s finally vacation time!” she grinned, “Now I can just sit down and read a book without feeling guilty about not studying.”
Mrs. Scher smiled back, stirring the meatballs and peeking at the bubbling zucchini soup. Glancing at the cherubic baby sleeping in the swing, Gitty seized the moment to continue the conversation. “Mommy, did I tell you my friends are planning to go to Toronto for vacation?”
Playing it low, Mrs. Scher said, “Yeah. You mentioned it yesterday. They’ll be staying at Faigy’s grandmother’s
place, right?”
“Exactly. And you once said that Bubby Greenfeld loves company.”
She thought of her widowed grandmother in faraway Canada and the weekly messages she would share on the Gut Shabbos calls. “Gittele, when will I see you next? I miss you!”
But she mentioned none of that. She knew her mother would read her thoughts anyway. Instead, she chose to throw the “even-steven” argument, the one that managed to touch her mother’s soft spot time and again. Mommy was also a middle child, and she would never let her suffer.
“Raizy went for midwinter vacation with her best friend, Esty, remember? And so did Chayala. You know that picture she has on her desk with her friend, Deena? That was taken right in front of Bubby’s house when they were in 8th grade.”
“So you want to go to Toronto.”
“Yes. If you let me. Hindy would love to come along with me.”
The doorbell rang, heralding Moishy’s homecoming. That meant the meeting was adjourned.
“I’ll talk to Totty about it. Come to me at 8 pm and I’ll tell you what’s happening.”
“Okay. But please… I want to go so badly. And the last bus this week is tomorrow at 5. So, I really need to know. Hind-”
The door flew open, revealing a red-cheeked 10-year-old with a voracious appetite.
“What’s for supper? Don’t tell me it’s meatballs again.”
Mother and daughter exchanged a wry grin, effectively cutting the conversation short. Leaving her mother to tackle the tantrum, Gitty escaped to the safety of her room and dialed Hindy’s number. Eight o’clock was so far away; at least she could pass some of the time by painting glorious dreams of a long bus ride, loads of nosh and laughter-filled late nights.
“I got the green light!” Gitty yelled into the phone at 8:03. She could hear Hindy jump for joy and then came the planning.
“So let’s take the 12:30 bus.”
“Right. Two memory cards.”
“Sour lips. Soda. My grandmother always has fresh cake; skip the Danishes. MP3? Thanks for reminding me!”
“A program? What do you mean Hindy?”
Gitty ran up to the attic to grab a suitcase, nearly colliding with Moishy who shot her an irritated, if not bemused, look.
“Sorry,” she whispered, as she continued listening to Hindy’s drawn-out description of the Museum of Natural History her cousin had once told her about.
“That sounds interesting, Hindy. But we need other ideas in case it’s too far or too pricey.”
There was no response.
Throwing in her latest library book, some cozy socks and her spare pair of glasses (cause you never know…), she waited.
“Hindy, are you there?”
After another couple seconds, Hindy picked up.
“Guess what? Charny just beeped in. She said that she’s also going to Toronto tomorrow with Faigy, Libby and Sora Malka! You know, Charny’s grandmother lives in the same neighborhood as yours. I told her to take the 12:30 bus so that we could have a blast on the way. And we promised to be in touch so we could do a trip or two together.”
Now that was an unexpected cherry - with whipped cream - on the top.
“Wow! I’m so excited. Let’s get packing and get an early night. We can always plan our trips on the bus ride.”
With that, a giddy Gitty set out to pack her suitcase for what promised to be an unforgettable midwinter getaway.
Gitty peered at the alarm clock. 12:08 it read. True to Murphy’s Law, just when she needed her sleep most, it somehow eluded her. That meant it was diary time. Letting out her feelings would clear her head and allow her to relax, and hopefully fall into a deep, restful slumber.
February 11, 2005
Dear Diary,
I’m so excited to be doing something so major for midwinter vacation, for a change. I usually celebrate this time off from school by wearing my new winter clothing, as opposed to the boring old uniform, visiting friends and playing Scrabble. Sometimes, I check out the sales or buy some crafts. If I get to bake cookies, then that’s really a vacation done right. When they talk about not going to Florida, I know that has zero
to do with me. I’m the goody-goody Gitty, the gitteh, the happy-go-lucky tzaddekes. Really, I don’t mind being nice and doing what’s right, but sometimes, in my heart of hearts, I wish I was a bit more with it. Nothing out-of-the-box, just more with the program.
So that’s why I’m on cloud nine now. Going to Toronto from Thursday thru Monday with a friend, plus meeting up with other girls in the class is no nebby vacation. It’s adventurous. Shticky. Really something to write home about. People will finally see me as a normal teenager who could shake a leg and get out there. Y’know, the best of both worlds, as they say.
This writing is tiring me, which is great, since I really need my sleep. There’s lots of action happening tomorrow and I don’t want to be the first to fall asleep on the bus…
With the closing of her diary came the closing of her eyes and a hodgepodge of rosy dreams. Would they really come true?
* * *
“You really plan on wearing that hat, Sora Malka?” Gitty asked.
“I definitely don’t plan on freezing. Up in Toronto, it’s supposed to be waaay colder than here. And isn’t that what vacation’s all about? To do whatever you want, without the stress of what others will think. No?”
“I hear that,” Hindy chimed in. “We should really chap arein and enjoy the fact that we certainly won’t be bumping into our teachers, or other people we’d rather not meet. Not that wearing a hat is wrong or anything.”
“You know what? I’m putting it on and leaving it on right now. It’s actually freezing already. I wonder when the bus is gonna come.”
Sora Malka took the black-andwhite ski hat from her coat pocket and promptly placed it onto her
frizzy hair.
“Not bad, actually. And hey, I see the bus coming!” Gitty moved her suitcase closer to the curb, as did the others. Hat or no hat, she was determined to make this vacation last a lifetime, in more ways than one. * * *
“...we won’t be helping much for Shabbos, so Friday is also a day to go out. But not too far. Shabbos is 4:35, in New York at least.”
That was Charny.
“So what can we do that’s fun but not too far? Faigy? Any ideas?”
Libby pointed at her seatmate and whispered, “She’s sleeping. With an open book, as usual.”
“Oh. How about you, Libby? Where do you think we should go?”
“Hmmm… Let me think. I was never in Toronto before, but there’s probably a place with some arcades and games. Or something like Amazing Savings. What do you think?”
“Could be they have such places, but let’s do something really fun. Something more active. I mean, not an amusement park…you know how roller coasters and I don’t really get along.” Sorah Malka stifled a yawn and turned to Charny.
“You’re the Toronto pro, Charny. Didn’t you go to Toronto for Sukkos this year? What kind of things did you do on Chol HaMoed?”
“Oh, how could I forget? Mike’s Ice! It’s a huge ice skating rink just five minutes away by car. I never went there, but my cousins don’t stop talking about their yearly trips to Mike’s. And it’s really not too expensive. All we’d have to pay for is a car, and that won’t be much, since we’re a big group.”
“That’s it!”
“Great idea!”
Sora Malka, Libby, and Hindy were
thrilled with the idea. Faigy woke up from the ruckus and quickly gave her enthusiastic consent. Only Gitty seemed less than eager. Uneasy about being the odd woman out, she nodded along, but her mind was far away.
* * *
“...far, far from the goyim and their culture. We want to be like the macabbim, not the misyavnim.”
Mrs. Kanner’s voice echoed loudly in the auditorium.
“We are Yidden. We live on a higher plane. We are better, more heilig than them. Our dress is different. Our language is different. We even vacation differently. A Yid lives with the Aibeshter at all times. Ice skating with goyim? Circuses? Mixed concerts? That’s not for a Bas Yisroel, not for a Bais Shoshana talmidah…”
The Chanukah mesiba went on, with donuts, dancing and drama. But the powerful message left its mark on Gitty and it all flooded back right now, next to the Canadian border.
* * *
Her heart pounding, Gitty joined her friends as they walked through the automatic doors of Mike’s Ice.
Blasting rap music filled the air. Young teenagers of both genders stood before them in line, chatting in loud tones. It was their turn to pay.
“That’ll be $9.50 each,” a tall, blonde-haired woman announced. Charny collected the money from all of them, Gitty included. Gayfully, the girls made their way to the large, open area, and put on their ice skates.
Standing right behind the doors, Gitty surveyed the goings-on. She noticed a woman, probably in her 20s, dressed in a tight-fitting T-shirt and pants, gracefully gliding along the rink. Her posture was perfect, her movements measured, accentuating every part of her thin
body. Not far, stood a group of rowdy boys, linking arms as they raced across the rink.
There was no question anymore. Gitty would not be joining the ice skaters today. Even if her teachers and parents were hundreds of miles away.
“Gitty, are you coming?” Hindy asked, “We want to take a picture before we start skating.”
“Ummm...I’m not coming in the end. I’ll wait outside until you’re done. You’ll be here for an hour, right?”
She could see the gears in Hindy’s brain turning. And the same could be said of Sora Malka, Charny, Faigy and Libby who had followed her to the doorway. Same old Gitty. Always a tzaddekes. Can never have a good time like everyone else.
“What a pity! You paid for a ticket already. Come, join us. It’s pretty empty inside.”
There you said it; pretty empty inside. This place is one piece of emptiness.
“Sorry, but I’ll wait around.”
The girls exchanged glances and shrugged their shoulders. No one could ruin their party today.
Gitty went upstairs to the empty party room, glad to be away from the secular sounds and sights that grated at her nerves and her neshama. Thump, thump, went her heart, sensing the greatness of the moment. She dug her hand into her coat pocket and felt for her trusty Tehillim. Seated in a quiet corner, she entreated Hashem to help her withstand the nisyonos that would come her way and thanked Him for the courage to do what is right.
Even if they’d call her a goodygoody.
The thrill of surpassing this heart wrenching test was one that would give her a high, long after the memories of midwinter vacation faded away. •
