Of course, it had to be on the most humid sweltering day of the summer so far.

“Come on,” Perry groused to her little girl. But her dear darling Chani just continued howling in frustration, flailing her arms in an attempt to get her mother to pick her up.

Perry let out a breath, slow and controlled, then bent down to retrieve her stubborn two-yearold from the asphalt. Chani snuggled up against her mother and hid her face in Perry’s shoulder, doubtlessly covering her white cotton top in the remains of her snack.

With an effort, Perry carried Chani over to her Bugaboo and tried to let her slide down as gently as possible. Chani held on tightly, refusing to let go.

“Chani, cutie, Mommy’s going to

take you home and give you a new snack instead of the one that spilled out, okay?” Perry coaxed.

Chani snuffled.

Smoothly, Perry buckled her into the spacious seat and stuffed a pacifier into Chani’s mouth, then briskly headed out of the park and down the street.

She pretended to be squinting in the sun instead of feeling tears of frustration stinging her eyeballs.

Why, why, why, did she have to be the only one in the entire city who was doomed to spending her afternoons in the local park with her little girl instead of letting her romp around freely on grassy fields or watching her in a swimming pool?

It had been just yesterday, she thought, that all her friends had lounged around her dining room table and on her couch, animatedly

discussing their summer plans.

Summer plans are overrated, Perry had thought savagely, but apparently the sentiment was hers alone.

“Can you believe that I was never there?” Faigy said rapturously.

“And now I’m going to be staying in Yerushalayim for four weeks.

You should’ve seen the pictures of the view from my apartmentstunning!”

Chavi looked wistful. “Yeah, some of my nicest memories are from our trip to Eretz Yisroel. You’re gonna love every minute! Where are you staying?”

“On Divrei Chaim,” Faigy supplied.

“Hey, Chavi, are your plans finalized or are they still top-secret?”

“Oh, they’re pretty final by now,” Chavi said smugly. “We’re going to Croatia for two weeks. Supposed to be a stunning place.”

The truck that would be taking the extended Shapiro family’s belongings up to their summer homes in the mountains was about to pull away from the block, and she didn’t want anything to get left behind.

“Yeah-thanks so much for taking us up with you,” Toby added.

“Okay, all done!” she hollered down the steps, then calmly

Chavi gave an airy shrug. “Oh, we booked with a guy who gives you all the information on the attractions in the area. I’m sure we’ll figure it out,” she said smoothly.

“I just like staying put,” Toby said with a little laugh. She patted her baby’s downy blonde fuzz and leaned back into the couch. “I can’t wait to just be with my family in the mountains, sit around and do nothing all day. That’s like totally the best vacation to me.”

Perry asked, keeping her tone jocular and breezy, as if she totally wasn’t wishing she could laserbeam herself straight over to her friend’s side.

“I’ll show you,” Toby promised with a grin.

Perry kept busy putting away the Kichels game they had just finished playing into its container, debating if she should start putting away the dips she’d set out for their shalosh seudos.

“And Perry’s our homebody, right?”

Chavi asked.

“Dear devoted mom who’s just going to spend her summer bonding with her daughter.”

“That’s exactly what we bought it for,” Goldy declared. When they’d bought their summer home, she’d insisted on building a separate, smaller bungalow on the same grounds, so she could host her married kids in comfort. Now it would be getting its first use.

Tonight she’d be serving her family supper at a picnic table under the trees, relishing the breezes and the green, green grass spread out as far as the eye could see.

Chavi smiled. “You workaholic you, I can’t even picture you sitting around all day and doing nothing.”

And wish I wasn’t, Perry added mentally as she entered the coolness of her apartment on Sunday afternoon. Keeping a twoyear-old entertained all day wasn’t

smiled. “It’ll be fun, won’t it,” she said casually.

“Ma, I’m telling the driver he can go, okay?”

Toby dispensed with the driver and came up towards her mother, eyes shining. “I can’t wait, Ma, this is going to be totally heaven!”

Goldy glanced affectionately at her married daughter, holding her tiny blue bundle close to her, and

“Oh, Perry, it’s mag-ni-fi-cent,” Toby gushed. “I just came back from the pool, Miriam offered to watch my baby so I could go. It was delicious!” she giggled. “Builtin babysitting, grass, trees, and a gorgeous pool-I mean, who needs anything else?”

“Wow, that’s amazing,” Perry said, managing three words before her civility would totally use up.

The click reporting a call-waiting was never more welcome before in her life.

“I’m getting another call, we’ll speak, Toby, kay?”

“It’s so humid around here, isn’t it?” a familiar voice said into her ear as soon as she switched calls.

“I’m running around shopping for everything I need for our trip. And it’s boiling!”

“Moishy told me,” Perry said, amused.

Perry felt hot too, suddenly, flushed with the realization that there would be no self-pity sharing here. She would have to deal with the boring, hot city on her own.

“Hi, Perry,” Mali sounded slightly breathless. “What’s up? You won’t believe what Dini just did,”

“No, you don’t get it-this was-oh, forget it-what did you want?”

“No, I’m just having the most awful case of FOMO,” Perry admitted.

“Trying to treat it.”

That night, Perry put Chani to sleep in her stroller and headed over to her sister’s house for a round of planning.

“Activity number one is going to be making peanut chews,” Mali said. “So we can think straight.”

Why couldn’t she, Perry, do the same thing right where she was?

Peanut chews turned into peanut chews plus microwave popcorn plus lugging out Mali’s slush machine, while they drew up lists.

She found a way to hang up on Faigy and went to check on Chani, who was going to be waking up from her nap any minute now. Seeing her still sleeping peacefully, brown hair matted onto her forehead with sweat, she tiptoed out of the room and called her sister.

“My mommy is helping Dini change her clothing,” her nephew lisped sweetly. Uh oh. Dini had been fully trained last week, an accomplishment Mali had been super proud of.

Suddenly, Chavi’s shrug and comment, “We’ll figure it out,” came back to Perry. It wasn’t a matter of where you were, but what you wanted to make of it.

“Mali, we’re making a camp,” she announced grandly before her sister even had a chance to say hello.

Toby got up, restless. She had to find something to do.

“It’s like, when would we ever do this otherwise?” Mali giggled, adjusting her sheitel that had gotten mussed in her fall to the skating rink floor. Perry glided by on her skates and waved.

Looking at the other three campers in Camp FOMO, Perry felt a glow. It was becoming a real success, giving her summer the oomph she’d been missing.
