“It’s my absolute pleasure,” I said sincerely. I could feel Mindy’s eyes boring into me, but I studiously ignored them. “Just tell me when you want to start setting up.

“Why are you so excited to have this tea party in our house? It’s not even your organization!”

I felt the tiniest twinge of regret as I pictured the scene, but it died so quickly it was as if it had never appeared.

I smiled serenely at my irate fourteen-year-old daughter.

“Don’t you know that Hashem gives us wonderful presents in order to share them?” I asked rhetorically. “Our new house is very spacious, baruch Hashem, which gives us lots of opportunities to help people out.

And that’s probably why Hashem gave it to us to begin with!”

Quietly, she took the package of cookies she’d come to retrieve and left the kitchen.

I sat down with my calendar to pencil in the date of Achva V’ahavah’s tea party. Tilly had been delighted when I’d immediately offered to host the party she told me she was planning. It was just part of my mission to share

everything I’d been given.

Pretty words aside, I really meant everything I’d told Mindy. All the way. That was why I had a beautifully outfitted hachnasas orchim apartment put into the basement while we renovated, and it was why I insisted on having guests at every Shabbos seudah.

It was my way of acknowledging the abundant blessings Hashem had showered me with.

décor and the guest list. The final event had been far beyond what Tilly normally put together.

Tilly let out a long, deep breath.

“Now I can take a bit of a break, summer’s coming,” she said cheerily. “I doubt people are going to need us up in the mountains.”

“Yup, I can’t wait,” I agreed, picturing the bungalow that served as our summer home.

White slats with a pink roof, it was the epitome of rural-looking on the outside, but inside we’d fixed it up to be almost as modern as our freshly-renovated home. I was looking forward to relaxing, curled up on a beach chair on the grass, going swimming and taking walks on the road.

“When you go to the mountains, it’s like you shut everything off,” Tilly said dreamily. “Like, no work, no school for the kids, no obligations. You can just wear a snood and a long skirt, every day, all day long. It’s perfect.”

“I know. Last year, when we went up to the mountains, it was smack in the middle of renovations. It was so amazing to be able to shut out all the pressure, just by leaving the city.”

As we spoke, I idly flipped through my calendar lying on the table.

Tilly’s event had been neatly crossed off. I had appointments for my kids’ camp arrangements coming up, doctor’s visits, and simchas carefully penciled in on the appropriate dates.

The day that we’d be making the migration up to the mountains was carefully circled in red marker. That was the deadline for all the shopping and packing that still had to be done. The next two calendar pages were blessedly empty. Just as Tilly had been describing.

I frowned. There was one little jotting in the middle of July. What

Oh, Nechy was making a bar mitzvah in the city, two weeks after the summer started. I’d totally forgotten about my sisterin-law’s milestone.

“Yeah. Anyhow, time to start on the camp lists,” Tilly said.

“Vacation doesn’t start for another two weeks.”

“Right,” I said mechanically, my mind on the obligation I’d just uncovered on my calendar.

Looked like I was going to be traveling into the city for the bar mitzvah, losing a day of R&R. Family was family, after all.

••• “The pool was heaven, Ma,” Mindy said. Her hair was wet and dripping, but her tanned face was shining in the light of the setting sun, and I smiled. “I just forgot to tell you that someone called for you before on the bungalow phone. Rivi Dorfman.”

“Thanks for telling me,” I said automatically. Rivi Dorfman. The name sounded familiar, but I couldn’t quite place where I knew it from.

“I wrote down the number on a Post-it in the junk drawer,” Mindy said. She turned to go, the towel over her shoulder swinging as she went.

I got up to follow her into the bungalow, where the coolness was a welcome relief from the sun outside. While I located the number and dialed it, my mind sifted through dinner options.

Nine Days’ menus took some figuring out. Would it be frozen falafel tonight or salmon cubes?

“Hi, this is Charna returning your call,” I said as Rivi picked up.

“Thanks so much for calling back,” she breathed gratefully. “I’m not sure if you know who I am-your friend Tilly gave me your number.”

“Any friend of Tilly is a friend of

mine,” I said generously. “How can I help you?”

Rivi explained that she often hosted meshulachim from Eretz Yisrael in her home in Monsey, and she tried to help them in any way she could. Now one of them had asked her for help in finding a place to stay in Boro Park. She’d heard I had a hachnosas orchim place, and she wanted to know if he could stay there.

“I do have a hachnosas orchim room,” I said, “but I’m not home for the summer. I’m up in the Catskills.”

“Oh,” Rivi said disappointedly. “I guess that means he can’t stay there.”

My mind turned furiously, trying to think of a solution. “One minute!”

I exclaimed. “When did you say he wants to stay there?”

“Sunday night and Monday night next week,” she supplied.

“I don’t believe it,” I said in amazement. “I have my nephew’s bar mitzvah in Boro Park on Monday night! I was planning to come in and stay over until Tuesday morning anyway.” I thought for a moment, and then said, “I’ll go in a day earlier, on Sunday, to prepare the room for him. Tell him he’ll be a very welcome guest!”

“Wow, that’s terrific,” Rivi said. I heard the relief in her voice as she thanked me, and I felt gratified.

Until, that is, I turned around to take the ready falafel balls out of the oven. Mindy was sitting at the table, chomping on a freeze pop and staring at me.

“What?” I asked, reaching up to adjust my snood.

“Are you seriously going into the city for an extra day just so some meshulach can stay in our house?!” Mindy asked, incredulity in every syllable. “I’m so not interested in being in sticky Boro

I don’t think we’re mechuyav to turn our lives upside down just so we can share our house!”

It took me a minute to answer, because I wasn’t sure how to make her see what I did.

“Look, Mindy, I think that it will mean a lot more to this meshulach to stay in a fresh, beautiful room than the hardship it will mean for us of being in the city for an extra day.”

Mindy sniffed and shrugged.

Being my spoiled youngest daughter made her think that every decision should be made together with her. But that wasn’t my policy, even if it left her feeling a little insulted.

“Guess what I just realized, Yehudis? We can drive you right back to the city!”

I explained to her what had happened with Rivi Dorfman’s request and that we’d be coming in a day earlier than expected.

“That’s so perfect, Ma!” Yehudis exclaimed.

“You see, whatever you do, you do for yourself,” I said loudly, so Mindy would hear me from between the pages of her novel.

It was a sweet bonus to be able to drive my daughter home.

••• “I still can’t believe we’re doing this,” Mindy grumbled as we all fastened our seatbelts for the drive into the city on Sunday.

“Who’s coming for Shabbos this week?” Mindy asked, changing the subject. “Yehudis and Ephraim?”

“Mommy and Tatty just want to drive me home,” Yehudis told her younger sister. Mindy scowled at her but said nothing.

“I actually didn’t work on our Shabbos plans yet,” I said. “It’s only Tuesday, but I’m going to invite Yehudis right now.”

“Hey, we’ll be back before you know it,” Ari, my husband, placated her. She was Daddy’s girl, all the way.

“Oh, I’m so excited to come,” Yehudis said happily as soon as she heard why I was calling.

“I was feeling so homesick. It’s my first year being in the city without you, you know.”

“Amen,” I said under my breath, spontaneously. I wasn’t sure why.

I felt a rush of sympathy. Yehudis had just gotten married at the beginning of the year, and she was working at her office job straight through the summer. It wasn’t an easy adjustment for a girl who’d spent every summer of her life surrounded by grass and trees.

“Well, we’ve been missing you too!” I said.

“I was looking forward the whole time to Shimshy’s bar mitzvah so I could get to see you, but now I’ll get to be with you before,” Yehudis said happily.

Ephraim was sitting up front near my husband, and the two of them got into an involved discussion almost as soon as we hit the road. Meanwhile, I asked Yehudis about her job.

But then there’s another girl that is so not my type, you can’t imagine. When all three of us are together, we’re fine, but if the first girl is missing, then it’s so awkward.”

“I wouldn’t manage,” Mindy piped up from the back seat.

Yehudis gave a ladylike roll of her eyes.

“Look, life isn’t high school,” she

said. “But sometimes the politics in the office remind me of it.”

“The difference is that you’re sort of stuck working with these girls,” I said thoughtfully.

“Yeah, it is what-“ Lurch!!

“Aaahhh!” Mindy screamed as the car’s front wheels picked up, then swerved to the shoulder and headed straight for a tree.

The impact as we hit the trunk was awful.

“Ari, are you okay?” I screamed.

There was a moment of absolute silence. I breathed shakily.

“I’m fine,” my husband said, his voice muffled by the inflated airbags.

“Get out of the car,” he added urgently. “Get away from it, right now!”

Standing on the shoulder of the road, I could see that the car was whole, as was every member of my family.

“Everyone fine?” I checked.

Yehudis and Mindy nodded solemnly.

“It was a deer,” Ari said heavily, once we’d made sure everyone was okay. “It just jumped out of the forest in front of us.”

“That was so scary,” Mindy said, her voice so thin it was almost a squeak.

I blinked. This was surreal.

“You realize it was a major nes that we got out untouched,” I said, my voice filled with emotion.

“Shluchei mitzvah einan nizokin,” Ari said softly.

“That meshulach might have just saved our lives,” I said. I knew it on the deepest level to be true.

And for once, Mindy, my opinionated teenager, had nothing else to say. *

blood levels of vitamin B12, but the symptomology is so varied that it's hard to pin down just how many people suffer from it, according to Harvard Health, which describes the "sneaky" symptomology behind a 62-year-old man's seemingly unrelated symptoms, developed over two months. According to his case report, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, he had: "Numbness and a 'pins and needles' sensation in his hands, had trouble walking, experienced severe joint pain, began turning yellow, and became progressively short of breath … It could have been worse — a severe vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to deep depression, paranoia and delusions, memory loss, incontinence, loss of taste and smell, and more."

It's problematic that symptoms like the above may cause people to focus on treating them instead of investigating the source of the problem. Sooner or later, though, unless it's met head-on, a shortage of vitamin B12 in your system can be so devastating that serious disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, Crohn's disease and irreversible brain damage could take their toll.

Low Vitamin B12 Symptoms Not so Unrelated After All The list of symptoms that could be placed on a B12 deficiency's proverbial doorstep is a long one, but many symptoms are associated with your central nervous system.

How Does Low B12 Cause Jaundiced Skin and Dementia?

Because B12 — and a lack thereof — is closely associated with your nervous system, the sign known as "pins and needles" is one that indicates a nerve issue that should be addressed as soon as possible, and shows how interconnected your body's functions are.

Because vitamin B12 is important for the maintenance of your central nervous system, including the conduction of nerve impulses and producing the myelin sheath, it protects and "insulates" your nerves.

Without this protective insulation, your nerves can be damaged, leading to symptoms like "pins and needles" in your hands and feet, as well as central and peripheral nervous system damage.

One symptom of anemia that often shows up are mouth ulcers, sometimes known as canker sores or aphthous ulcers, small yellow or white ulcers that can appear on your gums or just inside your lip. While they usually clear up in a week or two, they're often quite painful.

But a B12 deficiency can cause other symptoms in your mouth as well, including on your tongue. One study relates the experience of a middleaged female patient — a common demographic for her symptoms — with a persistent burning sensation on her tongue for several months.

Diagnosed with glossitis, which causes a noticeably swollen, smooth, red tongue, she was given a single injection of vitamin B12, which "resulted in complete resolution of her symptoms and the normal clinical appearance of her tongue after three days."

Vital to the study was that nematodes share an interesting characteristic with humans: They can't produce their own vitamin B12, either.

As reported by MedIndia, the study involved two worm populations: one with and one without a diet sufficient in B12, showing that a B12-deficient diet harms the worm's health at a cellular level by reducing its ability to metabolize branched-chain amino acids (BCAA): "The research showed that the reduced ability to break down BCAAs led to a toxic buildup of partially metabolized BCAA byproducts that damaged mitochondrial health …

'We used C. elegans to study the effect of diet on a host and found that one kind of food was able to dramatically increase resistance to multiple stressors — like heat and free radicals — as well as to pathogens,' said a researcher.”

Many labs around the world use C. elegans to study the effects of disease. By feeding the worms E. coli, a common and sometimes harmful gut bacteria, and switching between E. coli strain OP50 and strain HT115, the worms' stress tolerance was "dramatically altered," Kirienko said.

"We found that switching between E. coli strain OP50 and strain HT115 dramatically altered the worm's stress tolerance." Co-author Alexey Revtovich noted: "The key difference between the

two diets is the ability of HT115 and OP50 to acquire B12 from the environment … We showed that HT115 is far more efficient at this, making about eight times as much of the protein that it needs to harvest B12 as compared to OP50."

Significantly, the team also found that C. elegans on an HT115 diet had the ability to resist infection by another deadly human pathogen, Enterococcus faecalis, a leading cause of hospital-acquired infections and recognized by the World Health Organization and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a superbug.

Kirienko noted that the B12 finding surprised the research team. They noticed the effect when they studied "the mechanisms of pathogenesis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), a potentially deadly disease in both worms and humans that infects some 51,000 U.S. hospital patients each year," according to the CDC.

How to Optimize Your Vitamin B12 Levels Some people have a greater risk than others for vitamin or mineral deficiencies, but in this case vegans and vegetarians are at particular risk because B12 is derived from animal products. Additionally, older adults and people with gastrointestinal and malabsorption issues are also at risk.

Studies have also shown that those on metformin (for diabetes) and prolonged use of proton pump

inhibitors (for stomach acid) are also at an increased risk for vitamin B12 deficiency, leading researchers to suggest "it seems prudent to monitor vitamin B12 levels periodically in patients taking metformin."

Because it's not manufactured by your body, vitamin B12 must come from another source — namely food and supplements. That said, good sources for cobalamin or vitamin B12 include: Grass fed organic beef and beef liver Lamb Venison Scallops Organic, pastured chicken and eggs Raw organic, grass fed milk Nutritional yeast As for supplementation, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the average person age 14 and older should get 2.4 micrograms (mcg — one-millionth of a gram) of vitamin B12 per day; expectant women should get 2.6 mcg; and nursing women should get 2.8 mcg.

Newborns and children up to age 13 require between 0.4 and 1.8 mcg.

The type of a vitamin B12 supplement you should take is also something to consider. Between cyanocobalamin, the synthetic form, and methylcobalamin, which is the naturally occurring form found in food, methylcobalamin is the better choice, one reason being that your body retains it in greater amounts.

If it falls down, that child has to freeze until another child (while still holding their "thing" on their head), picks up the fallen object and gives it back to the child who dropped it. How long can you keep your balance?

Time for some crafting Draw a nice picture on a plain white paper. Then, use various colors chalk on salt to make different colors. Keep them in separate plates.

Next, take a small amount of running glue on a Popsicle stick (or your finger) and put it onto one part of your drawn picture. And while it’s still wet, pour on the desired color salt. For example, you drew a house, put glue only on the roof, and cover it with red/ pink salt.

Continue till the picture is complete.
