It really had been a treat, but she was exhausted. And now it would take her an hour of unwinding until she was ready for bed. ***
Somewheredoors. in her brain, she registered the existence of cornflakes and milk. There was also a new package of crackers and a jar of peanut butter. Those were her usual go-to breakfast
“It’s hot and delicious,” her mother urged. Leah hesitated.
Leah still looked unsure. Really, she loved walking in the brisk night air, and she relished the time to process her thoughts before arriving home. “I like walking,” she said feebly. “Oh come on,” Miriam said dismissively. “Get in the car, and we’ll drive you home, it’s not such a big Cowed, deal.”Leah entered the diminutive vehicle and sat in silence as her friend’s father made quick work of the ten city blocks. “Thanks,” she said to Miriam as she left the car. “It was great seeing you.”
BY: CHAYA BLUSTEIN Leah yawned. “That was fun,” she said drowsily to Miriam as the two of them left the café. “Perfect ending to a boring day.” Miriam smiled her agreement. She’d traveled in for another friend’s wedding, but getting to hang out with Leah for the rest of the evening made the trip all the more worthwhile. “Do you want a ride home?” Miriam asked as they approached the tiny blue car. Leah shrugged. “It’s just a couple of blocks,” she said uncertainly, looking back and forth between the car and the “It’sstreetlight.alsopretty late at night,” Miriam said, noting Leah’s exhaustion. “My father will be happy to drive you-we’re going all the way home anyway.”

Sheoptions.yawned again as she tried to Herdecide.mother, looking over her shoulder, said enthusiastically, “Why don’t you eat instant oatmeal for breakfast, Leah?” Instant oatmeal? It didn’t sound very tempting.
“It takes a second to make,” her mother Unenthusiastically, added. Leah pulled out a packet of oatmeal and prepared it. An uneasy feeling niggled at her as she shoveled spoonfuls down her throat, but she was too fuzzy to make it out. Her phone dinged a reminder that it was time to head out. She threw her bowl in the garbage unfinished and ran out the door.
“I’m getting really excited for it, now that all the technical details are worked out,” Avigayil was saying as Leah walked into
Road Trip to Self
Leah was still tired the next morning when the strains of her morning alarm began coming out of her phone. Yawning, she prepared herself to go to work. Her brain was too muddled to figure out what to eat for breakfast, as she absently opened and closed cabinet and pantry

“So you think I should go,” Leah said, slightly deflated. Her mother also thought she would have a wonderful vacation. It looked like she was overruled. Just to make sure, Leah took out a piece of paper and ripped it in half, writing Go along on road trip on one torn and Stay home on the other half. She crunched each one up into a ball and threw both onto her desk. Then she picked up one of them randomly and held her
“But this sounds like fun! Where are you going?” “Toby’s done this a bunch of times already,” Avigayil said. “She and Shifra are taking care of booking a driver and all the stops. I think they’re planning Colorado, with other stops on the way.”
Leah took out a coffee cup from the drawer, ears pricked up with “Hey,interest.Leah, are you coming along?” Dini asked. Leah gave an uncertain smile. She still wasn’t fully one of the club at work, having only worked here one year. What was she missing “Yes,now? please do!” Avigayil said. “There are still two places left in the “We’recar.”doing this massive road trip,” Dini explained. “It was really Shifra’s idea. Or actually, her sister Toby’s. You know Toby Weinberg, right? She’s famous.” Leah nodded. Toby Weinberg was an older single girl who taught in practically every high school in the city. She was known to be a riot and a ball of fun, both in the classroom and out of it. “So Toby offered to take Shifra on a road trip, and Shifra invited all her coworkers to come along,” Dini said. “Yesterday. You left early, “Yup,”right?”Leahsaid.
On the other hand…would she enjoy spending a full week with only her coworkers for company? They were really nice, but she wasn’t fully comfortable with them yet. And if the full truth were to be told, she wasn’t sure she would ever feel fully comfortable with them. They were just a tad different than her, in ways that were hard to define but were easy to Leahsense.kept her eyes on the computer screen until Shifra arrived, late as usual. “So, are you all psyched?” Shifra exclaimed, hugging herself with excitement. “We’re gonna have a total blast!” A chorus of excited agreement greeted her. Shifra’s eye fell on Leah. “You’re coming too, right?” she asked. “It’ll be the experience of a Leahlifetime.”gaveher a smile, hoping it didn’t look strained. “I’d love to, sounds like such an adventure! When do I need to confirm by?”
199WeeklyLink.com the office. Dini was nodding enthusiastically as she stirred her coffee at the kitchenette counter.
“And we already asked Mindy if we could take off a week in August,” Dini added. “She was totally fine with “Thinkit.”she’ll let me take off also?” “Sure, it’s a pretty slow season,” Avigayil said breezily. “And it’ll be dead boring here in the office anyway, with all of us gone.” “Sounds so cool,” Leah said. Her stomach did a flutter as she thought of spending a full week with only her coworkers for company. “When do I need to “Askdecide?”Shifra, when she comes,” Avigayil advised. “But really, what is there to decide? Of course you’re not missing out on this!” They headed for their desks clutching their respective coffees.
“You would give up this chance for a major vacation?” Miriam wondered. “It sounds like a dream, all planned out for you and all you need to do is hop along.” It was true, Leah admitted to “Andherself.anyway, you’ve told me a lot of times how much you enjoyed different things you did in the office.” Miriam added.
Leah’s mind was awhirl. And of course, her coworkers didn’t make it any easier for her by yapping exclusively about the trip and the hilarious stories Shifra had told them yesterday. Leah couldn’t even concentrate on their conversation as her mind batted the options back and forth. This road trip beat any of her tentative summer plans easily. A week of sightseeing and exploring with Toby Weinberg sounded like the experience of a lifetime.
Leah’s mother had thought the trip was a wonderful idea. Would make a great vacation for her hardworking daughter. Leah didn’t really know how to explain her misgivings to her mother. Instead, she called Miriam. “Hey,” she said to her friend. “Have a second to talk?” “Sure,” Miriam said easily. Leah quickly filled her in on the details of the road trip and her feelings about spending so much time with her coworkers. “And I have to decide by tomorrow, and I don’t know what to do!” Leah ended in a wail.
Tomorrow. *** Leah curled up on her beanbag chair, sucking a square of chocolate contemplatively. Shifra wanted to know ASAP if she was coming along on the trip or not. Her final decision deadline was tomorrow. After all, it was already in the middle of July.

Toby’s idea of fun included sleeping in a tent on park campgrounds on the very first night. Leah didn’t get a wink of sleep in the sleeping bag she’d brought along. “Psst,” Avigayil said when she saw Leah’s eyelids flicker. “You up?” “Yup,” Leah said. “Can’t sleep.” “Yeah,” Avigayil laughed. “We’ll probably get used to it soon.” Leah didn’t feel much like getting used to sleeping on the hard ground. She didn’t say anything. “It feels like the first night of camp, in a way,” Avigayil said. “Yeah,” Leah said. She’d gone to camp for two summers. She’d never loved it. “Hey, do you want to listen to this awesome camp CD?” Avigayil asked. She sat up, pulled out her MP3 player, and then turned it on the lowest setting. “You went to Camp Batya?” Leah asked, listening to the theme “Forsong.years,”
*
I’m starting to regret coming along on this trip, she thought to Herherself.next thought came unbidden.
Avigayil put away her player. Eventually, she drifted off. Leah didn’t. Wide awake, she checked her phone screen for the time. It was nearly three-thirty in the morning. She felt achy and exhausted, but she still couldn’t fall asleep.
***
Avigayil said wistfully. “Nothing lasts forever, right? But my sister is there this year, so at least I get the CD to listen to!” She played another track, this one an upbeat, jazzy tune. “I’m not sure if it makes the FOMO worse or better,” Avigayil said, “but I just can’t help keeping up with every detail of what’s going on. You know what I mean?” Leah didn’t, not really. And the jazziness of the song was making her uncomfortable. “I grill my sister for all the politics,” Avigayil said laughingly. “Like, listen to this song. It almost didn’t get approved by the camp directors, but I love it!” She switched tracks, and Leah immediately understood why the camp directors had been hesitant about it. Even at the lowest volume, the tune sounded like rock n roll. The kind of song that got screamed at the top of one’s lungs instead of sung. “Awesome, isn’t it?” Avigayil asked. Leah made a sound in her throat that could be construed as Eventually, agreement.
“It wasn’t my choice,” she said softly. Let it sink in. Why did she let what others thought dictate her actions? Why did she take a ride when her friend insisted, eat instant oatmeal for breakfast if that’s what her mother recommended, get pressured into buying things by salesladies in stores, and depend on the people around her for her sense of identity?
I like quiet, being with one close friend at a time, and being out in a tranquil place in nature. Not gallivanting around with a whole group of girls looking for Thenadventure.really, what am I doing Leahhere?!!sat upright on the hard floor. She shoved her phone into the pocket of her robe, and got out of her sleeping bag as quietly as possible, then squeezed her way out of the tent door. Outside, a very dark, very still night greeted her. The clear air rushed into her lungs and filled her brain. Leah looked up at the starry sky, so different from the fog-polluted skies she was used to back home, and just breathed. Slowly, a realization formed in her mind, as she thought back to the decision-making process that had led her to this place. She’d asked her mother for advice. She’d asked her friend for advice. She’d tried throwing a lottery. The one person she hadn’t consulted with was herself.
Wait, did I ever really want to come along altogether? Not really. I don’t feel like I’m on the same wavelength as anyone here, I don’t like being away from home, and going on a road trip is not so high on my list of fun activities.
Leah shook her head. These thoughts could only crystallize in the light of the stars without making her squirm her way away from the truth. No, she didn’t live her life choosing her own way. And automatically, choices and decisions made for her by those around her wouldn’t be uniquely tailored to her personality and identity. It was time she started taking responsibility for her choices. Realizing that her decisions would shape her identity. Would she be able to ignore the many voices that gave their opinions on what her correct choice of actions would be? She hoped she could. It was the only way she would be free to choose her own identity.
197WeeklyLink.com breath as she unfolded it. It said, Go along on road trip. Leah stared at the slip of crumpled paper with a mixture of dismay and nervous excitement. Would she actually enjoy it? Leah wasn’t sure.

• Sleep. Sleep gives you the ability to recharge and have energy for the day ahead.
2. Breathe. Deep breathing slows down your stress response. If you practice deep breathing even when you are not anxious, you can more easily use it when you are in a Rifka Schonfeld,Director 1542 East 19th St Brooklyn, NY rifkaschonfeldsos.com718.382.543711230

• Eat right. Get plenty of fruits, vegetables, and proteins. These will help your brain feel safe and taken care of.
There are plenty of resources available for those whose worrying gets in the way of their day-to-day lives. In her book, The 10 Best-Ever Anxiety Management Techniques, Margaret Wehrenberg lays out 10 methods to help overcome
It’s a low-grade fear. An edginess, a dread. A cold wind that won’t stop howling. It’s not so much a storm as the certainty that one is coming. Always… coming. Sunny days are just an interlude. You can’t relax. Can’t let your guard down. All peace is temporary, It’sshort-term.notthe sight of a grizzly bear but the suspicion of one or two or ten. Behind every tree. Beyond every turn. Inevitable. It’s just a matter of time until the grizzly leaps out of the shadows, bares its fangs, and gobbles you up, along with your family, your friends, your bank account, your pets, and your There’scountry.trouble out there! So you don’t sleep well. You don’t laugh often. You don’t enjoy the sun. You don’t whistle as you walk. And when others do, you give them a look. That look. That “are you naïve” look. You may even give them a word. “Haven’t you read the news and heard the reports and seen the Maxstudies?’Lucado, a New York Times bestselling author begins his book, Anxious for Nothing: Finding Calm in a Chaotic World, with the above passage. Do you live like that? Constantly imagining danger around the corner? Are you suffering from low-grade anxiety on a constant basis? Lucado smartly points out that “anxiety and fear are cousins, but not twins. Fear sees a threat. Anxiety imagines one. Fear screams, Get out! Anxiety ponders, What if?” While fear results in running away or fighting, anxiety inspires gloom and doom. Lucado also points out that anxiety disorders are the number one mental health problem among women in the United States (and in the top three in US men).

1.anxiety:Manage the body. People who are stressed don’t take care of their bodies. But, this leads to a cycle of stress. Therefore, in order to manage your emotional and mental state, you need to take care of your physical self:
• Avoid alcohol, sugar, and caffeine. These substances can create dips and spikes in our

Learn to:
• Identify the problem
• Come up with possible
6. Have a little fun. When you are in the midst of an anxious moment, it’s hard to laugh. But, if you make an effort to add more laughter and lightness into your life, you might find it easier to navigate the stressinducing moments.

5. Knowing, not showing, anger. Sometimes anxiety and anger are coupled. When you feel angry, you begin to feel anxious. If you can separate those emotions and understand that you are feeling anger, rather than anxiety, this may allow you to let go of the anxiety. Ask yourself, “What am I angry about?” rather than “What am I anxious about?”

on Monday.” And, set aside that time to think about solutions or simply to worry. Then, when the worry thoughts pop up on Tuesday, you tell yourself, “Stop! I already worried about that” and divert your thoughts to another activity.
8. Interrupt those worries. When you feel your brain starting up, say “Stop” or picture a stop sign or hand. Then, say something like, “I can do this” or another selfasserting statement.
10. Learn to plan, instead of worry. The difference between planning and worrying is that once you create a plan, you don’t need to check it over a million times. If you are worrying, you revisit that plan over and over. So, learn to plan.
stressful situation.
3. Mindful awareness. Close your eyes and pay attention to your body. How does it feel to breathe? Do you feel your heart beat? Can you feel your stomach rumble? Now, focus your attention away from your body. What do you smell? Hear? Last, shift your attention back to your body. When you are able to focus both internally and externally, you will feel more in control of your surroundings and your 4.circumstances.Don’tlisten
Don’t rethink it and change the plan. Instead, stick with it. You’ll ultimately be happier and less anxious. I created a 30 Day Anxiety challenge (see sample below) that incorporates these different element into everyday of the month. Hundreds of people have already started (and completed!) the challenge. Call today to get your 30 Day Anxiety challenge and join other people looking to change their lives and no longer live in fear!
7. Turn it off. This one is a tough one; however, once you learn how to do it, it can change your life. The idea is to “turn off” your ever-thinking mind. First, you think about each thing that is bothering you, one at a time. Then, you visually place each worry thought into a mental container and close it shut. Then, you can take out those worries when you have the time and resources to deal with them.
THAT'S NORMAL. However, when our feelings interfere with our ability or the ability of our children to properly function, it may be time to develop strategies to help overcome these fears and anxieties.

when worry calls your name. Anxiety is an emotional state. As I talk about in my children’s book My Friend, the Worrier, anxiety is a monster. When you feed the monster by giving into the anxiety, you let it grow bigger. Instead, you need to stop listening to the monster. You need to stop feeding it. You need to say, “That’s just my anxious brain again.” Then, you can begin relaxation breathing.
9. Worry well, but only once. If you simply must face your anxiety and you can’t turn it off or stop it, then you should worry. But, you should set aside a prescribed time that you are allowed to worry about it. For instance, “I am going to worry about my son not making friends in school for 20 minutes
