GRAND MILITARY GOLD CUP DAY

TUESDAY 7 MARCH 2023
OFFICIAL PROGRAMME £3.00

TUESDAY 7 MARCH 2023
OFFICIAL PROGRAMME £3.00
It is a huge pleasure to have you here with us today and I hope that you have a really enjoyable - and possibly even profitable – day’s racing There is always a very special atmosphere about today’s meeting It is of course partly the excitement of seeing service riders taking on the racecourse’s formidable fences, partly meeting up with old friends, partly the wonderful atmosphere that Sandown Park fosters but mostly because we are always privileged to have such strong and enthusiastic supporters like you. Thank you very much for coming
We are, though, of course very aware that this year’s meeting is the first since the sad passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth who was our Royal Patron for 20 years since she very graciously consented to assume the role from Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother It is difficult to over-state the enormous contribution that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth made to the meeting particularly in hosting her annual reception after racing for our owners, trainers and jockeys at Windsor Castle. Of course the whole nation misses her deeply but the military racing community feels a particular pang
We continue to be very honoured by the presence of Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal at today’s meeting and we cannot thank her enough for all she has done for us over the many years she has been associated with The Grand Military as jockey, owner, patron and supporter We are especially honoured that Her Royal Highness has agreed to take over hosting the post racing reception at Windsor and we are deeply grateful to His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort for so kindly inviting us to Windsor Castle.
We are also very grateful to The Army Sport Control Board who is sponsoring the Grand Military Gold Cup for the second year and we are delighted to welcome them back to Sandown Park We are also much indebted to Team Forces who sponsor the training of our serving service jockeys and so good to see them here today as well It is also a particular pleasure to see a team from the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre at Stanford Hall here again and we are deeply grateful to Sandown Park for so generously hosting them. Lastly we are delighted to welcome a party from the Defence Attaché community in London They are especially welcome.
And, of course, there would be no racing without our wonderful owners and trainers who field their precious horses and our service jockeys who ride them and are able to share the weighing room with today's professional jockeys. We wish them well as they take on the challenges of today’s races, cheer them on and cheer them home.
Most importantly, please really enjoy yourselves. Eat, drink, party and go home having had a fantastic day.

‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.
How the experts rate the horse’s chances:
2. BHA rating = the higher the number, the better the horse
3. Timeform view and TFR rating
4. HORSE’S TRAINER & THEIR LOCATION
Look out for the summary of leading course trainers before each race.
Listen out for any jockeys who are having a successful day.

The Best Shod Award will take place in The Winners’ Enclosure after The Grand Military Gold Cup.
Today’s Best Shod Horse will be judged by Robin May, a Farrier with over forty years’ experience shoeing competition horses and is a former England Shoeing Team member We caught up with him at his forge in Wokingham to ask him about today’s competition.
1. WHAT IS A FARRIER?
A farrier is the name given to someone who maintains horses’ hooves.
2. CAN A HORSE RUN WITHOUT SHOES?
The rules highlight all horses competing in races must be shod, meaning that they must run with shoes.
3. HOW DOES A FARRIER PLACE A SHOE ON A HORSE’S HOOF?
The shoe and nails are attached to a non-sensitive part of the hoof.
4. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME A FARRIER?
To become a Farrier you must undertake a five year training course
5. CAN ANYONE SHOE A HORSE?
You must be qualified to shoe a horse - it is an offence to shoe a horse without a qualification.
6. WHO GOVERNS FARRIERS?
Farriers are trained and examined by The Worshipful Company of Farriers A Livery company 661 years old this year and since 1977 the Company has the legal obligation to set the standards for horse shoeing. www.WCF.org.uk
7. CAN WOMEN BECOME FARRIERS?
Yes, the Worshipful Company of Farriers have outstanding female farriers in the UK
8. WHAT ARE RACING SHOES MADE FROM?
Racing shoes are made from steel or aluminum.
9. CAN RACEHORSES WEAR PLASTIC SHOES?
Racehorses do not wear plastic shoes because they do not have sufficient traction on the ground
10. HOW OFTEN IS A RACEHORSE SHOD?
In pre-race training, a racehorse is shod every 4 weeks and shod every time a horse runs a competitive race
11. CAN A HORSE RUN FASTER BECAUSE OF THE SKILL IN SHOEING?
If a horse is well shod and comfortable with their shoes, it can optimise their performance but not necessarily enhance it.
12. IS IT DANGEROUS SHOEING A HORSE?
Working with any animal has its dangers, but half a ton thoroughbred in peak race condition can offer some scary moments!
13. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART ABOUT SHOEING AND WHAT WILL YOU BE LOOKING FOR TODAY?
A well-trimmed balanced foot with shoes suitable for purpose
14 WILL THE HORSE WINNING THE BEST SHOD WIN THE RACE?
The farrier is a small but important part of the overall training process. It will have a good chance.

The Grand Military Gold Cup has enjoyed Royal Patronage since 1927, when HRH Prince Edward, Prince of Wales took over as Chairman of the Grand Military Race Committee. Subsequently, the Committee’s Constitution was signed by the Prince of Wales in 1931.
From this point, Royal association with the Grand Military Gold Cup has been unwavering. HRH The Duke of Gloucester took over responsibilities as Chairman in 1936 and, perhaps the most passionate supporter of them all was HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother who became Patron in 1970 Her support and encouragement for the meeting continued all the way through until her death in 2002. She also won the race on five separate occasions, including three consecutive wins with SPECIAL CARGO. The horse is epitomised in a bronze which stands at Sandown Park today.
SPECIAL CARGO was somewhat of a Sandown Park specialist His three victories in the Grand Military Gold Cup had already cemented his place in the racecourse’s history books, but he also would go on to win the 1984 Whitbred Gold Cup in a dramatic finish, one of Sandown Park’s most prestigious races of the season
The race hasn’t just been supported by the Royal family off the track, but also on it as well. His Majesty The King rode in the race in 1981 and, in 1987 HRH The Princess Royal rode an eight place finish aboard CNOC NA CUILLE. When her diary allows, HRH The Princess Royal attends Grand Military Gold Cup Day representing the Royal family and their long-standing support of the race Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, whom the nation sadly lost in 2022 after 70 years on the throne, also frequented Sandown Park and, in particular, Grand Military Gold Cup Day many times with her Mother Some of their trips to the racecourse can be seen in the pictures
Her Mother’s passion for racing was shared by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her legacy in the sport of horse racing will be one that will live on long into the future She had a passion for breeding racehorses, with a particular focus on Flat racing. This year would have been the 70th anniversary of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the image on the front of today’s racecard was taken here at Sandown Park in her coronation year, 1953, at Grand Military Gold Cup Day. As well as the 70th anniversary of her coronation, this year will also see the coronation of our new monarch, His Majesty King Charles III.

Her funeral attended by over 250, took place at the Church of the Sacred Heart, the land on which it stands, along with the Church Hall, was donated by the Walwyns.
She was one of four daughters of Sir Humphrey de Trafford, who established the world renowned Newsells Park Stud in 1926 and among his many successes was breeding the 1959 Derby winner, PARTHIA.
Cath was married to the late trainer, Fulke Walwyn, who also won the 1936 Grand National, as an amateur jockey. He was Champion Trainer on five occasions and trained 40 winners at the Cheltenham Festival, between 1946 and 1986, a record only surpassed in 2012, by Nicky Henderson. He also trained a record seven winners of the Whitbread Gold Cup, the end of season prestigious handicap held at Sandown Park, now run as the bet365 Gold Cup. Amongst those winners was HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother’s SPECIAL CARGO, who also won three consecutive runnings of the Grand Military Gold Cup between 1984 and 1986. A life style bronze of the horse stands next to the Winner’s Enclosure at Sandown Park. Cath took over the training licence from Fulke for a brief spell continuing to train for The Queen Mother.
Cath had a long association with Sandown Park. She was a member of the Race Committee from its inception in 1992. Her nephew, Brigadier Andrew Parker Bowles is a former Chairman of both Sandown Park and the Grand Military Steeple Chase Committee. She was a knowledgeable and fun character full of wisdom and anecdotes and a mine of information, her whole life revolved around and was steeped in horses and racing.
As an owner, she enjoyed a Royal Ascot victory with TREADWELL who won the Buckingham Palace Stakes in 2010.
Cath will be much missed, not only as a great friend and supporter of Sandown Park, but also to the whole racing industry and her many friends within it.

The Duke of Gloucester Memorial Trophy of Caprice and Foal will be presented today to the winning trainer of The Grand Military Gold Cup (sponsored by the Army Sport Control Board).
Her Royal Highness Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, graciously presented the trophy in memory of her late husband who was Chairman of the Grand Military Race Committee from 1936 to 1974. 2020 commemorates the 44th anniversary of the gifting of the trophy to Sandown Park with the race run in the presence of Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal.
Caprice belonged to Captain W H Eve (13th Hussars). She carried him at the head of his squadron in the cavalry charge at the Battle of Lajj, south of Baghdad, on 5 March 1917.
Captain Eve was killed and the mare received many wounds Over a year later, when she had recovered, she was recognised in the ranks of an Indian Cavalry Regiment. She was returned to her own Regiment and taken to her retirement in England. In May 1920, she had a foal by Gay Lally.
The Officers of the 13th/18th Royal Hussars (Queen Mary’s Own) commissioned a statuette representing Caprice and her foal and adopted the statuette as their Regimental wedding present. The Duke of Gloucester Memorial Trophy is the present which the Officers of the Regiment gave to His Royal Highness in May 1935, on the occasion of his marriage.
In 1975, Her Royal Highness Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, gave the statuette to the Grand Military Race Committee, of which her late husband was Chairman for 38 years. This was done with the approval of the Colonel, 13th/18th Royal Hussars (QMO), and some of the Officers who subscribed to the wedding present in 1935.
13 March 1976 saw the first race for The Duke of Gloucester Memorial Trophy, in the presence of Her Royal Highness, Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester.

The Outriders, who lead the runners out to the course, are drawn from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, which comprises The Life Guards and The Blues and Royals. Household Cavalry soldiers spend the first two years of their careers carrying out mounted State Ceremonial and Public Duties from Hyde Park Barracks, Knightsbridge providing the daily King’s Life Guard at Whitehall and the Sovereign’s Escort on state occasions. This year the Regiment will be at the heart of the summer ceremonial period. When not at the Mounted Regiment, Household Cavalry soldiers have an operational role conducting Armoured Reconnaissance. They are based in Bulford, Wiltshire and have in recent years deployed on operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Balkans and on exercise in Canada, Oman and Brunei. Riding today are Trooper Izabel Sweet and Trooper Tom Collins on Military Working Horse Inkspot and Pretorian.

Sport is important to the Army as it assists in developing our people; participation improves fitness, cohesion, commitment, and pride – it makes better soldiers. And as military training hones soldiers’ professional skills, participation in sport hones competitive edge, nurtures team spirit, enables soldiers to be mentally and physically robust and builds confidence. The effect of regular participation in sport is to develop individuals and teams who are better prepared to withstand the physical and mental demands of the battlefield.
The Army has a long and distinguished sporting history and has been involved at the inception of many of our national sports and their governing bodies. Sport remains an integral part of Army life; the Army Sport Control Board currently supports 44 sports ranging from the long established sports such as football, rugby, cricket, boxing and shooting, to those with growing popularity and participation such as cycling, netball and martial arts.
Soldiers participate at all competitive levels from unit through corps, Army and UK Armed Forces, with the very best competing on the world stage.

Plenty with chances but the vote goes to ALWAYS BUSY, who looks an interesting contender for a stable going better now than it has for most of the season. He was a ready winner of a 2m Warwick novice hurdle in November, form which has worked out well, and although he couldn’t repeat that performance at Chepstow 11 weeks later, that should have brought him on and he promises to be suited by the step up in trip on handicap debut. Hermino AA and Gwennie May Boy are also shortlisted.

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
