Good afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen, and a warm welcome to Yorkshire’sGardenRacecourseforourTeddyBear’sPicnicFamily Day!

We are excited to host Harrogate Theatre’s inaugural Pantomime Horse Race this afternoon in celebration of their 125th anniversary. With this and other events, they’re aiming to raise an incredible £125,000!

Join Wilf and cheer on the champ as they gallop across the finish line at our beautiful racecourse. Participants will enter the Parade Ring at 12.50pm and make their way to the track for a 1:10pm start.

We’ve got some competitive action on the track this afternoon, with the feature race, the Wilmot-Smith Memorial Handicap, taking centre stage at 3:40pm. This race is run in memory of the members of the Wilmot-Smith family who have contributed so much to the success of the racecourse over the years. We are delighted to have so many members of the family with us today. The race itself looks a cracker, with four of the twelve contenders boasting winning form over this Course and Distance! Can Fortamour do it again and notch his 7th win here?

Over in the Course Enclosure, the fun continues for our younger racegoers!

Come and meet our Teddy Bear Mascot, enter the ‘Cutest Teddy’ and ‘Most Loved Teddy’ competitions, and complete the ‘Teddy Bear Hunt’ for your chance to win Wilf, our giant teddy bear!

That’s not all—there’s Face Painting, Bouncy Castle, Balloon Modelling, Arts & Crafts, and performances from Professor Dan with Punch & Judy and Magic Shows throughout the afternoon.

We are delighted to welcome back the Baker Street Belles, who will be performing live in the Bandstand during the day—don’t miss their fabulous harmonies and vintage flair!

We’re also pleased to have local children’s charity Ohana here with us today—do stop by and learn more about the important work they do for young people in our community.

The Bowel Cancer Screening team is also with us in the Paddock Enclosure—please do take a few moments to visit their stand near the Parade Ring. This important initiative is running across Yorkshire’s racecourses this year and is proven to save lives.

Today marks the first of a typically busy August for us!

We race again for the William Hill Great St Wilfrid meeting on Saturday 16th, followed by a Bank Holiday Family Day on Monday 25th August, and a further meeting the following day, Tuesday 26th.

We hope you have a wonderful afternoon and enjoy everything the day has to offer!

TODAY’S TIPS

RACE 1

Right And Exact is hard to knock after winning his only start at Catterick by a head, but he will need to improve considerably to get the better of GOYARD The latter improved for his debut second with an easyvictory over 6f here, winning by nearly seven lengths, suggesting the drop in trip will not be an issue. Natural Force has been off for over two years but merits a market inspection.

TOTEWIN: GOYARD

TOTEEACHWAY: RIGHTAND EXACT

RACE 2

Although PEARL FORTUNE will need to be at her best to take this, she still looks the likeliest to come home in front. A five-length winner on her only start at Beverley, the Blue Point filly ran on well over 5f that day and could be a decent prospect. Rogue Temptation beat a previous winner at Haydock in July and warrants plenty of respect in receipt of 3lb from the selection, while Dandana is another to consider

TOTEWIN: PEARL FORTUNE TOTEEACHWAY: ROGUE TEMPTATION

RACE 3

TIVA struggled to make an impression in a better event at York when last seen but her previous second atThirsk suggests that she could be hard to beat in a race ofthis nature. Profitable Edge has not been at her best of late but should not be written off returning to a C&D she has scored over before, while Back Before Dark completes the shortlist. TOTEWIN: TIVA TOTEEACHWAY: PROFITABLE EDGE

RACE 4

Having found only a progressive rival too strong over C&D inJune, compensation could be on the cards for FIRST FOLIO A 2lb rise for Julie Camacho’s charge looks workable and a fifth career victory may beckon. Kodiac Thriller has posted a string of creditable efforts in defeat since scoring at Thirsk in May and is feared most, ahead of handicapdebutant Mandurah.

TOTEWIN: FIRST FOLIO TOTEEACHWAY: KODIAC THRILLER

RACE 5

Poet’s Dawn dead-heated for first at Beverley six days ago and warrants respect on his follow-up bid. However, a 4lb penalty demands more from the veteran, which could leave the dooropen forDAWN OFLIBERATION. Ruth Carr’s gelding arrives on the back of a close second at Pontefract and he makes plenty of appeal off an unchanged mark. The consistent Spioradalta can make his presence felt too.

TOTEWIN: DAWN OF LIBERATION TOTEEACHWAY: POET’S DAWN

RACE 6

GROUNDHOG has been knocking on the door in recent months and perseverance may pay dividends. A 2lb rise for his latest second over C&D could prove lenient and a breakthroughvictorycould be on the cards. ShielasWell continued hergood run ofform with a respectable third at Thirsk last month and is a feasible alternative, along with the down-in-class Precious Spartan.

STAR RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares which have been rated from 56 to 75. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 95 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and one furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 46 to 65. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
