TODAY’S RACING

WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake)
EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake
In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.
• Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win
• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2
• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4
• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4
Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay ’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY.
Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow:
1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection
2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake
3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly
4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe
5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed.
Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
15 Jockey’s photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
DESCRIPTION
A left-handed circular flat course, turning for most of the way, and finishing in a short straight which is less than two furlongs in length. The course suits the handy type of horse and a fast start is quite important in sprints. At just over a mile around this is the smallest course in Great Britain.

The in-form Kokinelli should be capable of another bold showing from a handy draw, while the hat-trick seeking Respiro Solitario has flourished since stepping up to 1m4f and can figure strongly, despite a 7lb rise for winning at Ffos Las. However, PRINCESS RASCAL created a favourable impression when second to a now 90-rated opponent at Windsor on her handicap debut and, unexposed over the trip, the daughter of Pinatubo looks the way to go.
TOTEWIN: PRINCESS RASCAL
TOTEEACHWAY: KOKINELLI
All of these have something to offer on paper and the betting is likely to be a very helpful guide. As a full-brother to a smart 7f winner, LOPEO, who cost 150,000 euros as a yearling, is suggested as the first one to note, while Laazm, Moment Of Light and Emerald Coast all represent in-form yards that are very capable of having one ready at the first time of asking.
TOTEWIN: LOPEO
TOTEEACHWAY: LAAZM
Go Victor kept on well to win over 6f at Thirsk and appeals off 4lb higher, while Sporting Light’s recent second-placed finish at Catterick was encouraging enough for him to make the shortlist. The vote, however, goes to SOMEBODY, who filled the runner-up slot behind a promising filly in a deeper race at Chelmsford. Heavily backed on that occasion, Richard Spencer’s youngster has since been gelded and can reward any faithful support.
TOTEWIN: SOMEBODY
GO VICTOR
CELANDINE took on older sprinters in a Group 3 contest at York on her belated seasonal bow and finished a respectable third. Ed Walker’s filly looks to have strong claims on today’s terms, with a low draw also in her favour Toyotomi is a Listed winner in France and is one to take seriously on only his second start for David O’Meara, while Ain’t Nobody drops in class and could also get involved.
TOTEWIN: CELANDINE
TOTEEACHWAY: TOYOTOMI
EMPIRESTATEOFMIND showed signs of a resurgence when placed at Hamilton last time and the son of Starspangledbanner has every chance at the weights in an open claimer The veteran Revich also posted an improved effort when third at Ripon and he saves his best for this venue, having won four times here in the past. On The River took a handicap at Carlisle in June and could also land a blow.
TOTEWIN: EMPIRESTATEOFMIND TOTEEACHWAY: REVICH
A taking winner of this contest last year off 3lb lower, YANIFER arrives in good form and he could be set to go one better than he did at York and Doncaster recently. Bobby Bennu bounced back to form with a strong runner-up effort at Haydock and is likely to figure, along with Palmar Bay, who has strong claims on his success at Chelmsford two starts back. Course winner Flaming Rib and Rogue Sensation cannot be ruled out either
TOTEWIN: YANIFER
TOTEEACHWAY: BOBBY BENNU
IT’S A LOVE THING travelled well on the front end for a long way over 1m4f at Pontefract before weakening into second late in the piece, and dropping back in trip may prove ideal. Risen Again has run with credit since scoring at Yarmouth in May and he must enter calculations. Glistening Nights represents last year’s winning trainer, while Hamlet’s Night makes his debut for a new yard.

TOTEEACHWAY: RISEN AGAIN

This is a one mile, four and a half furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 63 to 82. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

This race is a seven and a half furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry This particular seven furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 75

This six furlong contest for three-year-olds and upwards is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level –3lb for a Listed race victory, 5lb for a Group 3 success and 7lb for any horses who have scored in a Group 2.

This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. BOBBY BENNU bounced back to best with a recent run under his belt when second at Haydock last month and has a good chance of going one better in this slightly easier heat. Yanifer should be on the premises again, while Flaming Rib is lurking on a dangerous mark and this sort of trip is perhaps what he wants nowadays.

This is a one mile, two and half furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 59 to 78 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

HAMLET’S NIGHT went close in this grade from a higher mark for previous connections and may be able to get off the mark while enhancing James Owen’s fine record with stableswitchers. Course winner Light Speed is on a good mark if he can recapture his form from last season, with similar comments applying to Theme Park. Of the rest, Lone Piper has posted some creditable efforts this season and could be worth another chance with blinkers refitted.
