Sandown Park Racecard - Saturday 7th January

Page 24

CO KES EVENING THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

Happy New Year and a warm welcome back to Sandown Park

for the first fixture of 2023.

We have seven races on today’s card including the Grade 1 Unibet Tolworth Novices’ Hurdle which was won last year by Constitution Hill who pulled clear by two out in his now familiar and exceptional style. His success later that season at the Cheltenham Festival underlined the credentials of the horses we see here on a regular basis at Sandown Park

On the supporting card we also have the hugely popular Unibet Veterans’ Handicap Chase, the grand finale of the 2022 Veterans’ Chase Series for horses aged nine years old and upwards. The race always attracts many racegoer favourites from the past few seasons and recent renewals have seen Seeyouatmidnight, Houblon Des Obeux and Buywise as winners, to name just a few. Keep an eye out today for some more familiar names.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Unibet for their generous support of today’s racing. We wish them a thoroughly enjoyable day with us. There is no shortage of food and beverage options to keep you warm and replete as you take in the racing from any of the on-course vantage points We have a variety of options located in Surrey Hall in the Grandstand as well as concession stands throughout the racecourse

Looking ahead the action continues on the track with exceptional jumps fixtures all the way through to the spring The next fixture is less than a month away on Saturday 4th February with Contenders Day featuring the Grade 1 Scilly Isles Novice Chase, before Royal Artillery Gold Cup Day on Thursday 16th February Tickets for both these meetings are on sale through our website www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/sandown

Thank you for kicking off your year to a flying start with us here at Sandown Park We wish all our racegoers and connections a wonderful day and the very best of luck.

Look out for Letters: C = Has won at this course D = Has won over this distance CD = Has won over this distance at this course BF = Was a beaten favourite Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet. ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. The form of the Cheltenham handicap in which GREY DIAMOND was a creditable third on his reappearance in November has since received healthy boosts by the pair that beat him, and he is appealing back at the scene of his sole previous success over fences. Frero Banbou is capable of a very bold show off this mark and both The Last Day and Xcitations are not without a chance. However, the novice Corrigeen Rock was pretty impressive over C&D last month and he is feared most.

THE UNIBET TOLWORTH NOVICES’ HURDLE

In the mid-70s the race formed part of the

at that time, before

1977

In 1983 the race was awarded Grade 2 status and in 1991 was elevated to a Grade 1, when the race was won by Change The Act

Two 4-y-o’s have won the race as a Grade 1 – Silver Wedge in 1995 and Behrajan in 1999

There has probably been no greater renewal than that in 2000, when the never-beaten over hurdles Monsignor held off Best Mate, who went on to win three Cheltenham Gold Cups.

Last year’s winner, Constitution Hill could go down in the record books as one of the greatest horses to have won the Unibet Tolworth Hurdle His dominant performance in this race twelve months ago was just a glimpse of what he was capable of Since then he has gone on to win at the Cheltenham Festival in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, as well as Grade 1 wins this season in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle and the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton Park. Now sponsored by Unibet, the Tolworth Novices’ Hurdle is firmly established as the top two mile novices’ hurdle in the first half of the season.

YEAR ROLL OF HONOUR

HORSE

Constitution Hill cruises to victory in last year’s renewal The Tolworth Hurdle was first run at Sandown Park on Saturday 6th January 1968 - over two miles but as a handicap for 4-y-o’s and upwards. For the 1971 running the race became a two mile race for novices, as it remains to this day, and at £1250 was the second most valuable race on the card. Panama Cigar Hurdle Series running reverting to the Tolworth title and conditions in trained by Oliver Sherwood.

Authorised Speed and Arctic Bresil also look very promising and warrant plenty of respect, though others can’t be dismissed lightly too in a race that is perhaps a bit more open than the early market suggests.

This race is the £100,000 Final of the Veterans’ Chase Series run across the country in 2022. For this race there have been 12 qualifiers that have taken place at different racecourses, with all horses that started in any of the races being eligible for today’s Final. This includes last year’s winner Prime Venture, trained by Evan Williams. Prime Venture isn’t the only Evan Williams-trained horse to have been successful in this race, with Buywise also taking the race back in 2018. The race has always been popular with racegoers due to its nature of attracting fan favourites from recent seasons and this year’s renewal looks to be no different, with a strong field declared.

A host with chances in this valuable series Final. RAMSES DE TEILLEE won nicely when venturing into veterans’ company for the first time on his reappearance and this classy 11-y-o might be up to defying top weight. DJELO was turned over at odds on when last seen but, prior to that, he’d been very impressive on his British debut, so he’s worth another chance. Lightly Squeeze bolted up on his first start back with Harry Fry at Kempton last time and he’s an obvious danger, while Dr T J Eckleburg is no forlorn hope in a race that should be run to suit.

The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
