TONIGHT’S RACING

TONIGHT’S SPONSORS

Welcome to Ladies Day at Chelmsford City Racecourse

On this beautiful summer’s afternoon, we have six races for you, celebrating everything female: the first race is for lady amateur jockeys only and the second and fourth race are for fillies only. At the racecourse, we have been celebrating showstopping women since last year, from trailblazing jockeys and entrepreneurs to community heroes, hence we wanted our racing to be a further recognition of these amazing people.

In racing, we remember Charlotte Brew, who was the first woman to ride in the Grand National in 1977; Gay Kelleway was the first woman to ride a Royal Ascot winner in 1987 and Hayley Turner was the first woman to ride a Group 1 winner in 2011. From the training ranks, Jenny Pitman became the first woman to train a Grand National winner when Corbiere won the race in 1983, she then went on to train another Grand National winner as well as two Cheltenham Gold Cup winners. These inspirational women broke down barriers and created opportunities for the women of today to lead more fulfilling and exciting lives.

Have a fantastic afternoon.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

Timeform Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

2015

The racecourse opened its doors to the public, with the first race being won by the Godolphin owned Tryster, trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by Adam Kirby.

First major music concert, when Madness played after racing to a crowd of more than 10,000

The racecourse quickly established a reputation for some of the most generous prize money in British racing and an attendance of more than 80,000

2016

World-class entertainment with concerts from Simply Red, Rick Astley and Jools Holland among others.

Staged the prestigious rearranged Greenham meeting following the decision to abandon the original Newbury fixture. This card featured three Group races and was incredibly well-received by the racing community.

2017

A trailblazing year with quality racing and great entertainment such as Boyzone.

Chelmsford City’s annual Ladies Day was a sell out, becoming a focal part of the Essex social calendar

2018

Staged 63 fixtures with a massive £5.2 million in prize money, this included the UK’s most valuable evening meeting in history and Chelmsford City Racecourse’s first ever Listed race, the Queen Charlotte Stakes.

Chelmsford City quickly broke this record just two months later with an even more valuable meeting which featured the inaugural running of the Chelmsford City Cup worth an astonishing £100,000

2019

Addition of another Listed race, the Chelmer Stakes

Co-hosted our first music festival, Clockstock, in partnership with the legendary Clockwork Orange. This sell-out festival saw 60 of dance music’s most iconic DJs and acts including Erick Morillo, Roger Sanchez, and Todd Terry come to the racecourse and deliver undoubtedly the biggest party in Essex.

2020

What looked to be a sensational sixth year at Chelmsford City Racecourse, like most the racecourse found itself disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

The racecourse prevailed becoming one of the first to return with ‘behind closed doors’ racing, managing to successfully stage the majority of its calendar as well as preparing to open as one of the South East’s largest vaccination centres in the new year.

The Chelmer Stakes headlined the racing calendar, with course specialist Sean Levey and Happy Romance claiming victory in the thrilling six-furlong sprint. The racecourse also brought world-class music to Essex, hosting Example’s first UK performance since the pandemic in September 2021

The Cardinal Stakes, the racecourse’s premier event, featured a prestigious Conditions race with a remarkable £100,000 prize fund Additionally, to commemorate Racing Together Community Day, the racecourse proudly supported the Eden Project’s Carers Week, raising awareness of unpaid carers and the challenges they face. 2022

Chelmsford City Racecourse hosted its inaugural Remembrance Raceday on Armistice Day, honouring the Armed Forces in partnership with the Royal British Legion. Over £4,000 was raised for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, marking a memorable day of tribute and racing. 2023

2024

 Present

Chelmsford City Racecourse reached new heights with enhanced races, increased prize money, and record-breaking success. Good Friday racing in 2024 set a new benchmark, achieving the highest ticket sales for any racing event that year.

The racecourse revealed its biggest music event yet for 2025, announcing a threeday festival with a daily capacity of 25,000 people. The event will feature major headliners, including Justin Timberlake, Duran Duran, and Olly Murs

A CELEBRATION OF WOMEN ON AND OFF THE TRACK

Chelmsford City Racecourse is thrilled to confirm the return of “Showstopping Women”. More than just a celebration of style, this campaign exists to shine a light on the stories of truly remarkable women, creating a platform for them to be seen, celebrated, and to inspire other women.

First launched in 2024 to honour trailblazing female jockeys, and community heroes, the 2025 campaign, has expanded to feature a remarkable group of women chosen for their extraordinary resilience, incredible courage, life-changing charity work, and profound achievements. We are deeply honoured to share their powerful stories and celebrate their lasting impact on, and beyond

Ladies Day

For Ladies Day 2025, Chelmsford City Racecourse is proud to not only showcases the remarkable journeys of inspirational female jockeys but also celebrates a broader spectrum of showstopping and extraordinary women. From trailblazers in sport to icons in business, arts, community work, and beyond—this is a moment to honour the incredible achievements and stories of women making a difference.

Three standout partnerships will bring this vision to life: beauty powerhouse MACCosmetics(based in John Lewis Chelmsford), luxury department store FenwickColchester, and award-winning employment charity SmartWorks Together, they will transform Ladies Day 2025 into a celebration of empowerment, transformation, and purpose.

In collaboration with MAC, Every Shade of Showstopping will spotlight a handpicked group

of women—from athletes and entrepreneurs to community champions—through professional beauty makeovers and digital storytelling that highlights their journeys. Fenwick Colchester will join this initiative by offering bespoke styling appointments and fashion advice, helping these inspiring women express their individuality and confidence through personal style.

Meanwhile, Smart Works will lead Support a Woman. Spark a Transformation, a powerful campaign showcasing how access to professional clothing and coaching can change lives. With two-thirds of their clients securing jobs within a month, Smart Works is making a lasting impact by restoring confidence and opening doors for women across the UK.

Ladies Day 2025 is more than a celebration—it’s a platform for recognition, reinvention, and real change.

OUR 2025 SHOWSTOPPING WOMEN

Showstopping Women 2025 celebrates the courage, resilience, and impact of extraordinary Essex women who are breaking barriers and inspiring change.

From four fearless women—Jo, Sheila, Lorena, and Sam—preparing to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic, to Shelley Wheeler, the powerhouse behind every race day at Chelmsford City Racecourse, these women prove that strength comes in many forms.

Julie Taylor BCAC turns personal tragedy into powerful activism against knife crime, while Katie Smith shows unwavering devotion as a mother and carer through unimaginable hardship. Sue Bell OBE transforms young lives through mental health support, and Vanessa Brett reinvents herself through millinery and entrepreneurial spirit.

Finally, Talia Lazarus, after learning to walk again, founded a platform for others who’ve overcome adversity, proving that recovery is not just possible—it can be empowering.

These are the women rewriting the rules in 2025.

The son of Oasis Dream can cope with this drop back in trip to record his second career success. If the daughter of Dark Angel takes a step forward from that effort, she could prove hard to beat. JUNGLE LAND could only manage fifth over 7f at Leicester at the start of the month, but this drop in trip looks a good move for George Boughey’s gelding and he has every chance of returning to winning ways back on an artificial surface. Moulin Booj is capable of being in the mix judged on his second at Musselburgh on his penultimate start, while Ziggy’s Missile should find this grade more to his liking following his run in the Dash at Epsom.

Supporting Local Cancer Charity Helen Rollason

As part of our 10 Years of Community campaign we are proud to support local cancer charity Helen Rollason as one of our 10 chosen charities.

Helen Rollason charity’s aim is to provide a safe, welcoming space where people can be themselves without needing to put on a brave face. They offer a wide range of care and support, including complementary therapies, calming treatments, counselling, mindfulness, yoga, and more. This support extends through every stage of the journey, from diagnosis to treatment and recovery.

Founded in 1999, the charity is the legacy of BBC broadcaster Helen Rollason whose vision was “Good quality of life while coping with cancer is the most important gift a sick person can receive. It should be available to everyone”.

Helen was a remarkable woman. She became one of the UK’s most popular sports TV presenters beginning her career at Essex Radio in 1980, before her fight against cancer which inspired millions of people.

Her services to broadcasting and work for charity, which led to the formation of Helen Rollason Cancer Charity was recognised with an MBE before she died aged just 43

Beneficiary Katie’s Story

“In December 2023 my husband Adam was diagnosed with lung cancer, and I felt completely overwhelmed emotionally, having seven children to look after I had to give up work and didn’t know where to go for help. I felt like I was drowning trying to be strong for the children, but not knowing what the outcome would be, it was difficult for myself to hold it together.

My friend recommended Helen Rollason and encouraged me to reach out to them. If it wasn’t for her, I would never have gone.

The charity has given me support when I most needed it. I was able to just drop in and have a cup of tea at any time and offload, they hold ladies’ sessions where you can meet other people, and I was also offered massages and reflexology They were brilliant with my youngest who has additional needs and have been there for our whole family at our time of need.

I saw that they were looking for people to run the London Marathon this year to raise vital funds for their charity, so I signed up, not having much time to train but so proud of myself that I completed it and raised an incredible £3100!

There will never be enough words to thank Helen Rollason, they have been there keeping me sane when I wanted to break, and I would encourage anyone in a similar situation to reach out”

Jo Head of Community & Charity at Chelmsford City Racecourse said “Katie is a truly inspirational amazing lady and Helen Rollason charity helps lots of people in the community in similar situations struggling with cancer or supporting a family member They rely on the generosity of the public which is why supporting local charities is so important to us as part of our community outreach.”

Zoe Jay Head of Fundraising and Marketing at Helen Rollason added “Helen Rollason Cancer Charity is delighted to be chosen as one of the charity’s Chelmsford City Racecourse are supporting in 2025 to celebrate their 10-year anniversary. Being part of the local community in Essex is important for both organisations developing strong relationships and supporting those in need.

At Helen Rollason Cancer Charity we rely on good partnerships to help us raise money which enables us to continue to support those living with cancer We are so grateful to Chelmsford City Racecourse.”

CITY SELECTIONS

EMPRESS OF ALL is still learning her trade, but has shown enough to suggest she can win at this level. The daughter of King Of Change went close here before posting an improved effort when runner-up in novice company at Goodwood, and she gets the vote. Kathleen Mary finished an encouraging third at Lingfield on her reappearance. She could emerge as the main danger, given Mythical Bird disappointed when well beaten behind the selection at Goodwood.

Wadacre Gomez could launch a serious challenge returning to the all-weather, while there looks more to come from the Hamilton runner-up Indalo. Saying that, it could pay to take a chance on the less-exposed JOLLY JACK TAR. A maiden winner at Lingfield, the son of Too Darn Hot looks on a workable mark for his handicap debut and first start since December, and will likely prove competitive at this level.

DUBAI BEACH took a big step forward when returning the convincing winner at Kempton on her handicap debut. She will likely be raised by more than today’s 5lb penalty in the future and Saeed Bin Suroor’s filly looks worth sticking with Hitched returns to the Polytrack with solid claims in this grade, based on his victory at Lingfield in April, while Waiting For Love is worthy of a second glance on her handicap debut.
