GoodeveningandaheartfeltwelcometoYorkshire’sGardenRacecourse, for what promises to be an exciting evening of racing!

Our feature race this evening is the Wells Memorial Challenge Trophy, taking place at 8:00pm. This race honours the members of the Wells Family who have made significant contributions to the racecourse since its inauguration. Our current chairman, Andrew Wells, continues the legacy of his ancestors. A number of horses entered have been successful before at this distance, and Ziggy’s Ariel won here at the same distance in our season opener on 26th April, so it is shaping up to be a competitive race.

After tonight’s racing action, we have a quick turnaround as we return tomorrow afternoon for Ladies Day. We have fantastic prizes for the Best Dressed Lady and Best Hat competitions, courtesy of Grantley Hall and Jenny Roberts Millinery. Additionally, the Baker Street Belles will be performing again on the Bandstand!

We haven’t forgotten about the gentlemen either; there’s an exciting prize from The Ripon Inn for the winner of the Best Dressed Gentleman competition.

Looking ahead to July, we have evening racing scheduled for Monday the 7th, followed by our Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival meeting on Saturday the 19th. Club Enclosure tickets are selling quickly, so be sure to secure your bookings early.

Wishing you a delightful evening of racing, and we hope to welcome you back soon.

Very best wishes,

TODAY’S TIPS

RACE

1

Having filled the runner-up spot on both outings to date, compensation could be on the horizon for DUSKAURA. Archie Watson’s filly appears to have been found a suitable opportunity to gain a breakthrough victory and she’s preferred to Novelette. The daughter of Sioux Nation offered plenty of encouragement on her third-placed debut at Nottingham a fortnight ago and isn’t taken lightly Newcomer Zonnebloem is a potential fly in the ointment and market support would be interesting.

WIN: DUSKAURA

RACE 2

NOVELETTE

Although friendless in the market, MODERN TIMES posted a respectable fourth on his stable bowin a competitive handicap atYork recently. The switch to maiden companyis likelyto helpTim Easterby’s four-year-old and he could be poised to shed his maiden tag. Pal Joey arrives on the back of a fine third at Doncaster and any further improvement is likely to see him in the thick of the action once more, along with El Madar.

RACE 3

Having bounced back to form with a close-up second over 1m5f at Hamilton 13 days ago, Haptics must enter calculations in his current heart. However, a drop back in distance could leave the son of Camelot vulnerable to a speedier rival, with ODIN LEGACY edging the verdict. Richard Hannon’s colt did little wrong on his latest runner-up effort over 1m2f at Lingfield and a third career victory could be imminent. The down-in-class Lord Protector is also of interest.

WIN: ODIN LEGACY

RACE

4

HAPTICS

MyMate Kevmade his third handicap start awinning one at Newmarket last month and he holds an obvious chance, despite being 8lb higher. MrCool is respected aftermaking the frame at Hamilton, but the vote goes to ON KEY. Julie Camacho’s three-year-old finished just over two lengths clear of the third when filling the runner-up spot over C&D last time and he looks well placed to go one better. WIN: ON KEY

RACE 5

SHIELAS WELL showed a lot more when only finding one too good at Nottingham earlier in the month and she was kindly dropped 1lb for that effort. If the daughter of Saxon Warrior can run to a similar level, she could be the one to beat. Jenubiyah has shown ability in her three starts in novice/maiden company and she needs to be monitored in the market on her handicap debut. French Haven is another to consider

RACE 6

WIN:

ART OF FOX got off the mark in good style at Chelmsford six days ago and he now has a 6lb penalty to carry. Provided the son of Mehmas transfers that form to turf, he will prove hard to beat. Azucena struck in a classified stakes at Leicester earlier in the month and is an interesting contender back in a handicap. Of the remainder, Ninety Nine makes the most appeal.

WIN: SHIELAS WELL
DANGER: JENUBIYAH

STAR RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-yearold fillies. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

Big-money buy NOVELETTE made an encouraging start to her career when third at Nottingham and she may well find the required improvement to get the better of Duskaura, who sets the standard judged on her second-placed finishes at Yarmouth and Catterick. Newcomer Zonnebloem needs a close look in the betting.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This six furlong contest for horses aged three-yearsold and upwards is another maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

RACEFORM

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

LORD PROTECTOR made a positive start to the season when twice placed off higher marks than this during the spring, and he is appealing back down in class having contested high-grade handicaps on his last two appearances. Haptics went down narrowly at Hamilton recently and is feared most ahead of the lightly-raced Sir Edward Lear and topweight Odin Legacy

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 59 to 78. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

There’s little doubt that the new mark will make things tougher, but with 7lb claimer Fred Daly again in the hot-seat he may well prove equal to the task On Key finished nicely clear of the rest when runner-up over this C&D on his seasonal reappearance and he rates the main danger ahead of Mr Cool and Mae Amor.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 49 to 68 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
