GoodafternoonandawarmwelcometoYorkshire’sGardenRacecourse!

It’s been a very quick turnaround from racing last night and we are ready to go for Ladies Day! Our thanks to Grantley Hall and Jenny Roberts Millinery for providing wonderful prizes for the winners of our Best Dressed Lady and Best Hat competitions.

Please join us at the Winners Enclosure at 3:20pm to take part or observe.

We also have a Best Dressed Gentleman competition this afternoon, sponsored by The Ripon Inn. Please join us at the Winners Enclosure at 2:45pm, after race 2, for a chance to win dinner, bed and breakfast at the Ripon Inn and tickets to a fixture of choice in the remainder of our 2025 season.

On the track our feature race today is the Ripon Races Ladies Day Handicap at 3.50, featuring a host of Distance winners and six-time Course and Distance winner Fortamour. He’s been back here with a second and a third this season already and looks to go well but in what looks a highly competitive contest, a case can be made for all of the contenders.

It’s amazing how quickly the season is flying by and we’re already at the half-way point but there is still plenty to look forward to. Looking ahead to July we have evening racing on Monday 7th followed by our Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival meeting on Saturday 19th.

Wishing you a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, and we hope to see you again soon.

Very best wishes,

TODAY’S TIPS

RACE

1

PARISH COUNCILLOR bounced back to form when filling the runner-up spot at Redcar last month and he competes off an unchanged mark. If the five-year-old can produce a similar display, he could be the one to beat. Fiftyshadesaresdev finished a close third at Pontefract on his first appearance for this stable and he has to be considered. Star Start is another to keep an eye on.

WIN: PARISH COUNCILLOR DANGER: FIFTYSHADESARESDEV

RACE 2

FRONT LINE FURY has shown a fair amount of ability in his two career starts, sporting first-time blinkers to finish fourth at Nottingham last time. The son of Kodi Bear looks to have been found a nice opportunity and can open his account. Lucky Hero lost two places inside the last furlong to finish fifth at Chester, but he could take a step forward to have a say. 30,000-euro purchase Ellusive Butterfly warrants a market check on her racecourse bow.

RACE 3

Mr Jetman came through the field to record a double over a mile at this track and he holds an obvious chance. The slight concern is this step back up in distance and, with that in mind, BOSPHORUS ROSE gets the nod. Sir Mark Prescott’s filly built on three encouraging displays as a juvenile when scoring on her return at Bath. She remains unexposed and will prove hard to beat on her handicap debut. Paris Lights can fight it out for the minor honours.

WIN:BOSPHORUS ROSE DANGER: MR JETMAN

RACE 4

Having dropped to his last winning mark, Baldomero got his head back in front at Doncaster 12 days ago. Mick Appleby’s gelding warrants consideration, but a 4lb rise and step up in class might leave him vulnerable. With that in mind, COMMANCHE FALLS could be the one to capitalise after bouncing back to form with a good second at Hamilton recently Trefor and Irish Nectar are worth a second look as well.

RACE 5

WAR SUPREMO has finished third in all three outings over 1m2f this season and, stepping up in distance on his handicap bow, he could be ready to strike. The son of Churchill shapes as if a stiffer test of stamina will suit and an official rating of 75 looks workable. Fellow handicap debutant Percy’s Daydream was awarded a race at Lingfield last month and is a feasible alternative, along with Arkinthestars.

RACE 6

The application of a hood did the trick for recent Wetherby scorer SOUTH SHORE and there could be more to come. A 3lb nudge up the ratings looks workable for Ruth Carr’s charge and a brace may beckon. Fellow last-time-out winner Raft Up must enter calculations in his current fettle, although a 6lb higher mark does demand more from the four-year-old. With that in mind, a bigger threat may emerge from Mark’s Choice in first-time cheekpieces.

RACE 7

GROUNDHOG didn’t enjoy the best of passages when grabbing second at Carlisle last month and compensation could be in the offing. The River Boyne gelding makes plenty of appeal off an unchanged mark and, granted better luck, should take all the beating. Flamborough Head found himself with too much to do when finishing third over C&D and may reverse form with runner-up Sovereign Class. Perfidia could also figure now stepping up in distance.

STAR RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and one furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 56 to 75. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 65 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 46 to 58. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

TIMEFORM VIEW Good fourth in novice at Pontefract in April but hasn’t built on that effort in 3 handicaps since, the latest when well held over 5f at Catterick. Steps up considerably in trip and has plenty to prove from out of the weights. Star RatingHHIII Official BHA Rating 44

DECLARED RUNNERS 6

2024: CROWN’S LADY (IRE) 3 9 4 William Pyle 22-1 (Craig Lidster) 9 ran Visor worn first time by No 3. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No 1. Betting Forecast: 3-1 Groundhog (GB), 7-2 Sovereign Class (IRE), 4-1 Flamborough Head (GB), 5-1 Perfidia (IRE), 11-2 Keats House (IRE), 33-1 Ziva’s Star (GB)

If racing more efficiently, the lightly-raced GROUNDHOG could prove the best handicapped of these and he’s taken to go one better than at Carlisle last month. Flamborough Head has run creditably on both visits to this track and should give another good account, while Keats House could be the fly in the ointment if a first-time visor has the desired effect.
