SEVENTH RACE 5:15pm Season Finale, Last Chance For 2025 Handicap Stakes

Good afternoon and welcome to the final meeting of the 2025 season at Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse.

It’s hard to believe that our season is coming to an end, it seems like just yesterday we were preparing for it to start. It’s great to welcome back Theakston Brewery for the Theakston Final Furlong Festival, head down to the Paddock Lawn to sample some of their excellent beverages. Over on the Bandstand, Reef Hound are performing for us this afternoon, be sure to head over and have a listen.

Our feature race this afternoon is the Ripon Cathedral City of the Dales Handicap over six-furlongs at 3.25pm. This race sees 2023 William Hill Great St Wilfrid winner Sophia’s Starlight come up against 2025 winner Intervention in what should be an exciting clash. Hot on their heels is Mister Sox who has already won here twice this season.

It’s great to again stage the Michael Raby Memorial, two divisions of it no less and welcome back Trevor Ingham who sponsors this race in memory of his good friend. We have an exciting potential tussle in this race between Hurstwood and Barmyblade who have both won here this season already.

Thank you to all our sponsors today and throughout the season.

Our fixture list for 2026 is now confirmed and can be found on the back of this racecard as well as at ripon-races.co.uk. We hope you have a great afternoon, and we look forward to seeing you again in 2026!

NOTE:

TODAY’S TIPS

RACE 1

BRAVE TRAVELLER missed the break at Beverley on debut, but he finished strongly to take fourth over the stiff 5f This extra yardage shouldn’t be an issue on that evidence and a bold bid is anticipated. Well beaten when fourth at Thirsk, Here Forever could be thereabouts in this maiden if the first-time tongue-tie has the desired effect, while Ballybunion is preferred to Container Express of the remaining pair

WIN: BRAVE TRAVELLER

RACE 2

DANGER: HERE FOREVER

ASSARANCA ticks plenty of boxes. She found this trip to her liking when finishing a strong second on the soft going at Sandown latest and Richard Hannon’s filly could go one better Zooter has shown ability and finished a respectable fourth over C&D in novice companylast time. He has to be ofinterest on his nurserydebut and makes more appeal than Conjecture.

WIN: ASSARANCA

RACE 3

DANGER: ZOOTER

SMART VISION arrives at the top of his game. Jessica Macey’s sprinter carried a big weight to victory at Beverley before going close on testing ground at Chester a week ago, and he looks worth sticking with. Gold Star Hero took advantage of a falling mark to score at Yarmouth and could be in the mix once again, while Vince L’Amour rates best of the rest.

WIN: SMARTVISION

RACE 4

DANGER: GOLD STAR HERO

Atentative vote goes to EYE OF DUBAI, who returned to form with a creditable placed effort in the Ayr Silver Cup, despite being slightly hampered over 2f out. With a victory and a second on his two previous efforts over C&D, the four-year-old is narrowly preferred to Another Baar, who arrives here on a five-timer but must prove himself back at 6f Beaujolais Nouveau is another to bear in mind.

WIN: EYE OF DUBAI

RACE 5

DANGER: ANOTHER BAAR

DREAM DEAL scored at the expense of a subsequent winner at Catterick last time out, and a 6lb rise could prove lenient as Tim Easterby’s charge looks to go in again The hat-trick seeking Mrs Trump can follow the selection home, along with Annie Edson Taylor, who has not finished outside of the first three home in each of her last four outings. Keep an eye on Eldeyaar, Ifonlytheycudtalk and Roundhay Park too.

WIN: DREAM DEAL

RACE 6

MRS TRUMP

Some may question the Hamilton form, but AEQUITAS was accomplished for a newcomer and this could be well within the compass of the David O’Meara-trained filly as she looks to supplement that debut victory, given she’s open to plenty of improvement. Driver’s Pick’s French form is encouraging and he appeals more than the newcomer Knighton and Stitching Wheel at this stage. WIN: AEQUITAS

DRIVER’S PICK

RACE 7

SAWGRASS is open to progression over this sort of trip and could take another step forward after a respectable third-placed finish over 1m6f at Salisbury last month. That effort came after a 71-day break and the daughter of Gleneagles could be spot on for this off just 1lb higher Recent Chester winner Marbuzet also rates a key player running off just 2lb higher, while The Crafty Mole and Cock And Bull also warrant close inspection.

WIN: SAWGRASS

DANGER: MARBUZET

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This race is a six furlong maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

RACE DESCRIPTION

A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry This particular one mile race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 75.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

However, in the event of an emergency please remember: TAKE YOUR BELONGINGS WITH YOU AND UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE ATTENDANTS PROCEED QUICKLY AND QUIETLY TO THE SAFE AREA THEN TO YOUR AGREED RENDEZVOUS POINT OR TO YOUR CAR OR COACH.

Happy80thBirthdayPeter!

With Love and gratitude, I would like to wish my wonderful husband Peter a very happy 80th birthday.

Today is a day filled with joy, thankfulness, and celebration - shared with his Wife, children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, who are all so proud of him.

It is only fitting that such a special milestone is marked in a place that mirrors his passion for horse racing. A day at Ripon Races brings together everything he enjoys the most- the thrill of the track, the company of family, and the happiness of making memories together.

Peter often tells his friends and family that there is “No finer horse racing tipster”, so what better way to honour his words than by spending this remarkable day at the races, surrounded by those who love him dearly.

Here’s to Peter - a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great - grandfather - may this milestone birthday be every bit as special as he is

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a two mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
