Welcome to Epsom Downs Racecourse for our 2025 Season Finale!
As the curtain falls on another year at Epsom Downs Racecourse, we would like to take a moment to thank all our racegoers, owners, trainers, jockeys, partners and staff who have made the 2025 season such a success.
This year saw some unforgettable highlights on the Downs, not least Aidan O’Brien’s double with Lambourn storming to victory in the Betfred Derby and Minnie Hauk winning the Betfred Oaks, cementing another chapter in the racecourse’s history.
Today’s Season Finale celebrates all that makes Epsom Downs Racecourse unique with competitive racing, community spirit and a vibrant atmosphere. As well as our seven-race card, don’t miss the highlight of the day with the 22nd renewal of the Annual Terrier Derby when over 60 lively pooches line up in aid of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. We’re already looking ahead to the future. Planning for the 2026 Betfred Derby Festival is well underway, promising another spectacular celebration of world-class Flat racing And for those seeking festive fun, our Shared Christmas Parties in the Derby Suite and Oaks Hall offer the perfect seasonal get-together in December
Finally, we can’t wait to welcome you back in the spring for our 2026 Season Opener on Tuesday 21 April, when we’ll launch another exciting year of racing here on the Downs
For more information and tickets for all our events including Christmas parties are available on our website www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/epsom
Thank you for being part of the season at Epsom Downs Racecourse and be sure you stay on for the after-party as Stringin’ It will be performing live after racing in the Oaks Hall to bring the season to a close in style

‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.
How the experts rate the horse’s chances:
2. BHA rating = the higher the number, the better the horse.
3. Timeform view and TFR rating

The Sir David Prosser Trophy celebrates the achievements of the most successful Epsom-based trainer from the 2025 racing season.
The trophy was named in Sir David Prosser’s honour on his retirement from the non-executive board of Epsom Downs in 2013. Sir David made an enormous contribution to the development of the racecourse over many years and remained a loyal supporter of Epsom Downs and the local training community until his passing in March 2020.
The award for the 2023/24 season was given to Jim Boyle and Simon Dow, both with 18 winners across the 12 month period. They were closely followed by Michael Attwater with 17 winners. The award was presented at the Epsom Owners and Trainers’ Ball in November 2024.
The 2024/25 award started on the 5th November last year, and these are the current standings, correct as of 26th September.
The presentation for the winning trainer will be made at the Epsom Trainers Association Ball in November. The Sir David Prosser Trophy championship for 2025 runs from 5th November 2024 to 4th November 2025.
Epsom Downs is home to nearly 180 horses in training. These horses have access to six miles and 250 acres of top quality training surface along the Surrey Downs. We are very proud of the training grounds here on Epsom Downs. Racing is part of our heritage and we want to ensure that we keep the Downs as a prestigious training ground and encourage further business from trainers and owners in the future.

Today at Epsom Downs we remember a true great of the turf in Geoff Lewis, who is commemorated in the Geoff Lewis Apprentices’ Derby Handicap (Supported By Betfred)
Geoff, who sadlydied last month atthe age of89,wasWelsh-born but indelibly linked with Epsom both as a jockey and latterly as a trainer.
It was while working as a bellboy at the Waldorf Hotel in London that Geoff was spotted by champion Jump jockey Tim Molony, who suggested to him he was the right size to be a jockey. He was subsequently apprenticed to trainer Ron Smyth in Epsom and rode the first of his 1,880 winners in Britain aboard Eastern Imp at Epsom Downs on April 23rd, 1953.
Of course, the horse Geoff will always be associated with is Mill Reef, a brilliant winner of the Derby in 1971. Trained at Kingsclere by Ian Balding for owner-breeder Paul Mellon, Mill Reef won 12 of his 14 starts and was ridden by Geoff throughout his career. Mill Reef’s quartet of victories in the Derby, Eclipse Stakes, King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 1971 remains a feat unsurpassed. The great horse returned to Epsom Downs in 1972 to land the Coronation Cup.
In the year of Mill Reef’s Derby success, Geoff enjoyed a seldom achieved Group One treble at the Derby Festival as he also landed the Oaks aboard Altesse Royale and the Coronation Cup on Lupe. In total, he rode five British Classic winners, with victory also coming in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket aboard Right Tack (1969) and in the Oaks and 1000 Guineas on Mysterious (1973)
Upon his retirement as a jockey in 1979, Geoff successfully turned his hand to training and from his base at Thirty Acre Barn in Epsom he saddled 539 winners during a 20-year career. The best of those included the breathtakingly fast Lake Coniston, the Champion Sprinter of 1995, and Silver Wisp, who was third to Dr Devious in the 1992 Derby.
It was a great pleasure to welcome Geoff back to Epsom Downs Racecourse in 2018 when he kindly agreed to conduct the Derby draw alongside fellow Derby-winning rider John Reid.
The thoughts of everyone at Epsom Downs today are with Geoff’s wife Noelene and daughter Marianne.
The Apprentice Jockey’s Derby, run over the full Derby course and distance, was inaugurated in 2003.
The race gives a once-a-year opportunity for apprentice jockey’s to win the unique jockeys’ Derby and attracts some of the best young jockey’s in Britian.
The race forms part of a series of ‘Derbys’ run afterThe Betfred Derby in June.

No shortage ofchances in the finale and with that in mind it could payto take a chance on Ruth Carr’s WOODSTOCK. Having gone close at Ripon on his penultimate start, it’s best to forgive him a lesser run at Doncaster 16 days ago and he’s lurking on a very handy mark back up at 7f (all wins at this trip). Kisskodi is going the right way and highly respected. Eminency and Musical Angel complete the shortlist.
