Europe’s Richest 2YO Race: Goffs Million

On behalf of the team at Goffs, I am delighted and proud to welcome you to The Curragh for Goffs Millions Day.

Goffs Million, Europe’s richest juvenile race, with a spectacular prize fund of €1,000,000 is the highlight of the day. Open exclusively to horses purchased at last year’s Orby Sale, the race forms the centrepiece of the Goffs Two Million Series. This initiative has already delivered over €1,000,000 in €50,000 Bonuses to winners of two-year-old races across Ireland and the UK since the start of the season and another €1,000,000 will be distributed to the connections of 10 runners this afternoon.

We look forward to welcoming buyers from around the world back to Kildare Paddocks for the 2025 Orby Sale, which begins on Monday. Orby graduates have enjoyed a truly exceptional year: dual Classic glory for Minnie Hauk; a Royal Ascot double from Garden Of Eden and Merchant; Saratoga victories for Excellent Truth and Laurelin; and a host of outstanding juveniles, including Gimcrack winner Lifeplan, Flying Childers hero Revival Power, Prix Robert Papin star Green Sense, and Curragh Group winners Queen Of Hawaii and Composing.

A superb day of racing and entertainment awaits. I would like to extend our sincere thanks to Brian Kavanagh and his team at The Curragh for their warm welcome and hard work in making Goffs Millions Day so special for Goffs and our guests.

Together with our Chairman, Eimear Mulhern, and all my colleagues at Goffs, I wish every racegoer an enjoyable and memorable day.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CURRAGH COMMENT

A marked improver from first to second start when dropping to this distance at Naas last time out, SAVILE ROW should have plenty more to come for his leading connections and he can get off the mark. Now in the hands of local trainer Michael Grassick with Colin Keane a notable booking, White Smoke outran her odds of 100/1 to finish second over C&D last month and is entitled to be thereabouts again. The well-bred Armada De Lope looks the pick of the newcomers.

CURRAGH COMMENT

A versatile sort who has got the hang of the sprinting game over the summer, NEZEEH impressed despite being slowly away when scoring at Navan earlier in the month and a 7lb rise may not be enough to prevent him from going in again. Last year’s impressive winner Keke must enter calculations dropping back in trip, along with old rival Red Evolution, who was last seen scoring comfortably at Cork in July An eye-catching third on his first start for the Stephen Thorne stable here lately, Sir Les Patterson completes the shortlist.

JOEMcGRATH

The Joe McGrath Premier Handicap pays tribute to one of the leading figures in Irish racing who died in 1966. He was one of the most influential figures in Irish politics and business and can also take a huge amount of credit for the success of the Irish racing industry today. He enjoyed plenty of racing success most notably with Arctic Prince who won the Epsom Derby in 1951.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Aidan O’Brien’s record in this race could hardly be more impressive and both Ballydolye contenders Hawk Mountain and Port Of Spain are serious players. Both come into this on the back of a win but the former readily held sway when they clashed in a maiden here last month and the son of Wootton Bassett looks to be the yard’s first string. However, GERYON’s second in the Futurity is the best form on offer and he’s a very bright prospect for Ger Lyons to go to war with.

CURRAGH COMMENT

GENUINE ARTICLE has held his form well this season and may find dropping back down to 7f is a route well worth exploring. Having filled the runner-up berth in the Irish Cambridgeshire before posting another narrow defeat over an extended mile at Galway, this shorter trip could prove ideal for the prominent racer Engines On is an old rival who could have a big say, while Flaming Rib and Monsieur Fudge are interesting options starting out for new yards.

CURRAGH COMMENT

COMPOSING looks a cut above the opposition. A Group 2 winner here, she finished a respectable fourth in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes last time, and her prominent style of racing should help the Ballydoyle filly stay clear of any trouble in-running in a huge field. Third in the Phoenix Stakes over 6f, Green Sense could feature representing last year’s winning yard, while the maiden winners Take Charge Star and Phenomenal Filly have plenty of scope for further improvement.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Juniper Sling sets the standard with an official rating of 78 but although respected, she has ground to make up with Simurgh, who finished almost two lengths ahead of her in second at Roscommon earlier this month. Dawn Coming made a pleasing introduction over the mile here in June and enters calculations but a chance can be taken on newcomer DUVESSA. The daughter of Make Believe is related to four separate winners over various trips, of which a couple, perhaps crucially, appeared to handle the forecast ground conditions.

CURRAGH COMMENT

SUBSONIC remains a maiden after four starts but that doesn’t tell the whole story, as she’s had to chase the tail of multiple Oaks-heroine Minnie Hauk twice in her career Johnny Murtagh’s filly was crying out for room in the closing stages an Navan latest but she shouldn’t have the same issue berthed well today, and the Lope De Vega filly can belatedly open her account. The ultra-consistent Tswalu deserves a change of luck but minor honours could await her once more, while Carthusian and Candleford Green are others to consider
