THE TIMEFORM VIEW This could well fall to one of the 3-y-os with WAVE RIDER, who has proved consistent in handicaps on the back of his breakthrough maiden success fancied to make a bold bid from what looks a handy mark. Calla Lagoon and Chillingham are others to consider, ahead of hat-trick seeking Raulin.

PREDICTION:

TIMEFORM VIEW Mehmas gelding who has proved steadily progressive this year, bagging back-to-back C&D handicaps in recent months. However, latest small-field victory probably best not taken at face value and completing the hat-trick will be much tougher from an 8lb higher mark.

WELFARE OF HORSES AND RIDERS

The safety and welfare of all horses and riders involved in races at Pontefract is one of our principal priorities. A Paramedic Ambulance, a Doctor and a Vet follow the runners in every race

GREEN SCREENS will normally be erected round any horse or rider requiring attention in order to provide privacy. This does NOT necessarily reflect on the severity of any injury.

Simon Scrope passed away on the 7 March 2010 after a long battle with Parkinsons’ Disease which he bore with enormous fortitude. th

He was in every sense of the word a gentleman and in his own quite reserved way, he was passionate about this Racecourse.

I knew him for over 20 years. We first met when I was recommended to ask Richard Longstaff Insurance Brokers to handle the Racecourse insurances. He was their Chairman. We immediately struck up a friendship.

When our then Chairman Tony Bethell fell ill in 1995, I invited Simon to join the Board with a view to him taking over as Chairman. He became Chairman in July 1996 and remained Chairman until just before he died, only giving up because he felt he could not discharge his duties as he would have wished to do.

He was extremely conscientious, rarely missing a race meeting, and taking a keen interest in every aspect of the Racecourse and Racing Industry He was always made a point of seeking out and speaking personally to all the staff, giving them praise and encouragement,

He was an ideal Chairman for me. He never interfered directly in the day to day running of the Racecourse but he kept his finger on the pulse and gave me a diplomatic nudge whenever he wanted to make a point.

He was an exceptional Chairman and very dear friend.

The Dalby Screw-Driver Handicap Stakes was named after a painting by David Daly of York which belongs to the Race Company and depicts ‘Screw-Driver’ winning the Badsworth Hunt Gold Cup at Pontefract in 1824. Simon was particularly fond of the painting and of the race itself and in consultation with his widow Jane we decided that adding his name to the title was a fitting way to commemorate what Jane described as his thirteen ‘very happy’ years as Chairman.
