Once a horse’s ability has been assessed by the Official BHA Handicapper it is given an official rating This is an assessment that determines how much weight it shall carry compared to the other runners. In simple terms a horse rated 100 carries 2lbs less than a horse rated 102. A rating over 130 is well above average and the winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup is normally rated over 160 Most handicap races have an upper rating limit to encourage runners of similar ability to take part and make a competitive race e.g 0-110, and a 28lb weight-range
One Fit Padded Hurdle: The ‘One Fit’ design is a modified hurdle frame with a custom fitting close-cell foam pad replacing the traditional birch. The hurdle was developed with the objective of reducing both the faller rate and the risk of injury as the result of a fall. They are 3ft high and placed in the ground at an attractive angle to encourage horses to jump them fluently At Perth there are five flights of Hurdles on the course Eight are jumped in a two mile race, nine in a race over two miles and five furlongs and eleven in a race over three miles.
Steeplechase fences are made from hardwood frames stuffed tightly with birch. When making a fence the birch is packed in at a height of approximately 6ft, then cut down to a maximum height of 4ft 6”. There are five ‘plain fences’ on the course at Perth and two ‘open ditches’. An Open Ditch is the same height as a plain fence but has a small ditch in front of the fence to make them a bigger test for the horse and rider
At Perth there are two open ditches on the course, the first fence in the straight and the first down the back straight. Perth is one of the last remaining racecourses to have a Water Jump, this is situated in front of the main Grandstand and is much smaller than the other fences, with a 6ft wide water jump behind a small birch fence. There are eight steeplechase fences on the course. Twelve are jumped in a race over two miles, fifteen over two miles and four furlongs and nineteen in races over three miles.
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
These races are designed to provide a fair and competitive contest before a horse is allocated a weight, according to his ability, to run in a Handicap These races are therefore normally for young horses aged from 3 to 5-y-o. As a 5-y-o is deemed to be stronger than a 3-y-o he/she will be made a to carry a little more weight. Once a horse has won a weight for age race he/she will be asked to carry a ‘penalty’; this is normally an additional 7lbs. Once a horse has won or run three times in a Weight for Age race he can be assessed and given a weight in a Handicap Race.
In the event of racing being abandoned before the first race has been run, all ticket holders should retain tickets. Information regarding refunds or transfers will be posted to pre-paid tickets holders within seven days of the abandonment; all other applications should be made to the racecourse office within the same period. In the event of racing being abandoned after the first race has been run, all badge holders should retain their passes. Refunds will not be made unless at the discretion of the management.
The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to, or expel any person from, the racecourse without assigning a reason for doing so, and does not accept any responsibility for loss or damage to persons or to their property
A cash machine is available within the Grandstand Enclosure by the Main Entrance and The Barn.
Racing’s top priority is the safety and welfare of horse and rider People join the racing industry because they share a genuine love for horses. Like most sports, racing carries risks, however, we work to ensure that no death or injury occurs which could have been prevented. Horses have the right to a decent and fulfilling life, both during their racing career and afterwards. We are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected round any horse receiving veterinary attention on the course This does not reflect the severity of the injury but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calm environment in which to make a recovery Please therefore do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse
The procedures for Claiming and Selling Races have changed. No Claims will be accepted on the racecourse No additional period is allowed for Friendly Claims Registered Owners, Licensed and Permitted trainers may claim by telephone, to Weatherbys on 01933 303080

It is an offence to smoke or knowingly to permit smoking in any enclosed areas of the Racecourse and where you see the no smoking sign.
Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication.
Flash photography is essentially dangerous where horses are involved. You are asked not to use flash photography anywhere in the grandstand enclosure and particularly near the winner’s enclosure.

Please follow the instructions of the messages and also of the racecourse staff and police. In the event of evacuation, please remain calm and assist the racecourse by leaving your area in a safe and orderly manner

At Perth, as at the other racecourses in Scotland, the enjoyment and welfare of stable staff is very important to us To help ensure that any ideas for improvements or any complaints can be addressed at a suitable time, Matthew Taylor

This looks an excellent opportunity for KENISA SPORT to make it 2-2 over hurdles. The well-bred Biglesisback didn’t really get the chance to show what she could do in a big-field bumper at the Punchestown Festival in the spring and it wouldn’t be a surprise were she the one to give the selection most to think about.

Just as he did during the 2023/24 campaign, SAFE DESTINATION made a winning seasonal reappearance last season and the 7-y-o is taken to do the same again this time round. He may have most to fear from Hold Onto The Line, who hasn’t fired in two starts for this yard but this step back up in trip could be just what the doctor ordered. The penultimate race on today’s card is a 0-105 Class 5 handicap hurdle, in which seven horses go to post. The 3m contest was won last year by Skyjack Hijack, whowentontowinhisnextfour starts, whilst Rebecca Menzies took the 2022 renewal with You Name Him. The Sedgefield-based trainer runs You SomeGirl this afternoon and the mare is unpenalised for her recent Uttoxeter success, as that came in a conditional jockeys’race
That victory came just nine days ago and if the quick turnaround doesn’t impact her performance, she is likely to go well again.
The consistent The Flying Poet representstheOllyMurphy-SeanBowen combination, a team who have done particularly well at this track in recent times, whilstlocaltrainerNickAlexander relies upon the evergreen Artic Mann, havinghadacoupleofoptionsatentry stage. ground would, however, have been preferable.
Lizzie Quinlan’s Evenwood Sonofagun was just 1½ lengths behind Artic Mann when third here last time and won’t mind the drying ground, whilst Diane Sayer’s Wearelongterm was declared anon-runnerinthesameevent,dueto the good ground. Another who would prefer a little more cut under foot, he remains lightly-raced and although still a maiden under Rules, hails from a stable in fine form at present. Sayer enjoyed a double at Kelso last week, which included the victory of stablestar The Navigator (in another JTFsponsored contest), then saddled a winner on the Flat at Ayr the following day. Racing’s top priority is the safety and welfare of horse and rider People join the racing industry because they share a genuine love for horses. Like most sports, racing carries risks, however, we work to ensure that no death or injury occurs which could have been prevented. Horses have the right to a decent and fulfilling life. We are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care.
It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the course This does not reflect the severity of the injury, but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calm environment in which to make a recovery Please therefore do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse
