Welcome to the 2023 edition of the Newmarket Racecourses Pattern and Listed Race guide.
The new season is fast approaching and there is a great sense of excitement and anticipation among the team, as final preparations are made to the turf and around the venue.
Before I mention some ofthe new initiatives and prize money announcements for 2023, I would like to reflect on last year’s campaign, where we saw fantastic action across both the Rowley Mile and the July Course.
A reintroduction of a third day to the QIPCO Guineas Festival, along with the return of crowds to the meeting for the first time since 2019 saw the turf season start with style, and James Doyle dominated the Rowley Mile. The late Coroebus provided him with a first Classic winnerin the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, before Cachet followed up 24 hours later in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas, to the delight of young trainer George Boughey.
We welcomed a full crowd back to the July Course for the Moët & Chandon July Festival, where another jockey dominated the headlines. A first Group One success for Rob Hornby on Prosperous Voyage in the Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes was quickly followed by a second, when Alcohol Free dominated a classy Darley July Cup field just a day later.
As we headed back to the Rowley Mile forthe Gold Season, we saw several horses mark themselves out as future stars. This included Chaldeanwho looked everyinch a QIPCO 2000 Guineas contender when winning the Darley Dewhurst Stakes, and Lezoo, who was best ofthe fillies’ in the Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes.
Looking ahead to the forthcoming season, we begin with the bet365 Craven Meeting, which takes place mid-April, before the QIPCO Guineas Festival in May where we will be celebrating the Coronation of King Charles III.
Once again, the fixture will be run across three days and we are delighted to be renaming the Listed Fillies’ six-furlong contest on 2000 Guineas Day to the “Ellen Chaloner Stakes”, a nod to the trailblazing trainer who was the first woman to be given a permit to train horses by The Jockey Club in 1886.
There has been a considerable amount of work taking place across the winter period at the July Course, including an exciting redevelopment project which has seen upgrades to the Weighing Room and Head-on Stand. The internal layout and facilities of the Weighing Room have been improved and upgraded, along with adding a new first-floorviewing terrace with stunning views of the racecourse to the Head-on Stand.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Juddmonte and Darley for their support of a new programme of high-value developmental races, including seven which will take place across the season at Newmarket. With increased prize moneytheywill boost returns to owners in the early stages of their horse’s career and will help to take total prize money for the 2023 season at Newmarket Racecourses to over £12 million.
I would like to wish you and your horses the very best of luck forthe new season and, along with the team here, very much look forward to welcoming you to Newmarket Racecourses forwhat promises to be a fantastic year

As the founder and owner of a leading supplier of feed, bedding and supplements to the Bloodstock and Equestrian industry in the Middle East, it gives me great pleasure to once again support the Jockey Club’s flagship flat racecourses on The Rowley Mile and the July Course in Newmarket.
Newmarket is steeped in history and tradition and we at Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai enjoy, appreciate and deeply respect those traditions. It is our pleasure to once again support the Owners & Trainers facilities on both courses and we congratulate Sophie Able and her marvellous team in achieving such an incredibly high standard in the 2022 ROA inspection.
Together we continually strive to make the Owners & Trainers experience at the two courses more comfortable and enjoyable.
September 2022 saw the inaugural Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Raceday on the Rowley Mile where we worked hard to incorporate the town of Newmarket which holds the unique distinction of being the birthplace of thoroughbred racing as we know it today. All prizes for all of our seven races were sourced in Newmarket and its surrounding villages making the winning connections ceremonies even more special and local.
I would like to wish all Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and everybody who works behind the scenes every possible success for the 2023 season.
Sincerely
www.albasti.com
