SPONSOR’S WELCOME
On behalf of everyone at Betfred a very warm welcome to Epsom Downs for Ladies Day at the Betfred Derby Festival.
I am thoroughly looking forward to both days and today we have seven quality races to look forward to with an intriguing Betfred Oaks the obvious highlight, closely followed by a Betfred Coronation Cup full of talent. I’ve been looking forward to this weekend since leaving the Downs last year and today should get the festival off to a great start.
Last year’s Betfred Oaks was won by Ezeliya, owned by His Highness Aga Khan IV who sadly passed away earlier this year and it is very fitting that tomorrow’s Betfred Derby will be run in his honour.
Having been a high street bookmaker for the last 58 years, Oaks day always brings back plenty of memories, some notable ones being Dunfermline (owned by the much-missed HM Queen Elizabeth II) costing me an absolute fortune when winning in Silver Jubilee year (1977), Oh So Sharp (1985) was a very special filly and Ouija Board (2004) and Enable (2017) were two other very impressive winners that stood out for me.
This year’s Betfred Oaks field is one of high quality with the Betfred 1000 Guineas winner Desert Flower heading the market with William Buick looking to win a third Betfred Classic in a row! Nobody should ever underestimate the Aidan O’Brien team who, having won this race on 10 occasions previously, also arrives with some live chances.
This will be the third year I have sponsored the Oaks but is the first year I have sponsored all five British Classics. I have been asked several times why I have done this, and the answer is simple. The British Classics are the best in the world, and it will be a proud moment for me today when I hand over the Betfred Oaks Trophy.
Finally thanks to all the management and staff here at Epsom Downs Racecourse, Jockey Club Racecourses, ITV Racing and Racing TV, the Press, all the jockeys, trainers and everyone who contributes to the great sport of horseracing. And many thanks to all the racegoers, I hope you have an enjoyable and profitable day here at Epsom Downs today.
Fred
Welcome to Epsom Downs Racecourse
We are delighted to welcome you to Epsom Downs Racecourse for the opening day of the Betfred Derby Festival, featuring two Group One highlights with the Betfred Oaks and the Betfred Coronation Cup.
Ladies Day at Epsom Downs Racecourse is about more than racing alone - it is a celebration of sport, style and shared experiences. Whether you are drawn by the thrill of world class competition, find joy in dressing for the occasion or share our passion for the spectacle itself, there is something here for everyone. From the calm of the parade ring to the unique atmosphere out on this historic racetrack, today will provide unforgettable experiences for all, whether you’re a racegoer, owner or participant
We offer our sincere thanks to our principal partner Betfred, whose increased support this year has been instrumental in bringing this festival to life and their continued dedication to British racing is hugely appreciated.
This year marks a significant milestone as Betfred sponsors all five of the British Classics for the first time. They have also introduced a remarkable £2million bonus for any horse that completes the Betfred Triple Crown—the Betfred 2000 Guineas, Betfred Derby and Betfred St Leger. It is a rare and historic achievement, last accomplished by the legendary Nijinsky in 1970.
We would also like to thank TrustATrader, Nyetimber and new partner Debenhams for their support across today’s card.
The Betfred Oaks is the third Classic of the British Flat season, held over a mile and a half for three year old fillies. One year older than the Betfred Derby, it holds a proud place in racing history, with a roll of honour which includes some of the most celebrated names ever to grace the turf This year’s renewal promises to be a race of the highest quality, and we wish the best of luck to all those taking part.
THANK YOU TO
THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
Today will also see the Betfred Coronation Cup take place, one of the best middle-distance Flat races in the world. This year, a perpetual trophy from the 1902 running of the race will be presented to the winning owner Made prior to the Coronation of King Edward VII when it was re-named, we are delighted to be able to honour the heritage of this historic race in this way.
Off the track there is a wide range of entertainment and food options for you to choose from, including Cedric’s which returns for a second year, positioning you right by the most famous winning line in racing. After the action on course has concluded JLS’s Marvin Humes will be keeping the party going at the Rekorderlig bar and you are all very much welcome.
This outstanding event is made possible by the dedication and commitment of the teams at Epsom Downs and The Jockey Club, who have worked with great care and energy to create a memorable Ladies Day for all who are joining us. We extend our very best wishes to the runners and their connections throughout the day, and hope everyone enjoys a wonderful experience at the Betfred Derby Festival.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example,
Previous Performances
/ = denotes new season
- = denotes new year
Bold type indicates AWT Form
Jockey’s Name.
If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight
would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

BETFRED’S TOP TIPS
RACE ONE
The opening race of the Betfred Derby Festival can go to favourite backers as DIEGOVENTURA looks to build on his Longchamp win. He showed a willing attitude there and Thursday’s rain will also have aided his cause. The lightly raced filly Saqqara Sands will also appreciate the recent rainfall and is another to consider in receipt of weight.
RACE TWO
MAXIMIZED was an expensive purchase who beat a shorter priced stablemate on his Haydock Park debut two weeks ago. It was a taking performance and connections took this contest with the high-class Pinatubo in 2019. He will come from stall six, just like the last two Woodcote winners Havana Hurricane beat Logi Bear at Goodwood on his debut and should confirm that form while Raakeb wasn’t disgraced at Beverley and shouldn’t be discounted.
RACE THREE
It is very hard to see past CALANDAGAN landing his first Group 1 success this afternoon. He has been runner-up at the top level in his last three starts, goes on any ground and has a few pounds in hand of his rivals, having had Giavellotto behind at Meydan in April. Irish Oaks heroine You Got To Me, freshened up since well beaten in the Betfred St Leger may be able to follow him home.
RACE FOUR
Mutawid is up 10lb for a runaway Newmarket victory and will likely head the betting. RogerVarian saddles the lightly raced Defiance having won three of the last seven renewals. He was second in last year’s Derby trial but hasn’t been seen since Royal Ascot A lot has to be taken on trust Ryan Moore is an eye catching booking on Botanical for the 2022and2024winingownerSheikhObaid.AneachwayplayonECUREUILSECRETisadvisedonhissecondstartfor Richard Fahey. He’ll appreciate the rain over last couple of days and kept illustrious company last year.
RACE SIX
RACE FIVE
The market centres around unbeaten Betfred 1000 Guineas heroine Desert Flower. She holds massive claims if she stays, but it’s a big if. GISELLE is impeccably bred and has lots of ability. It was only a three runner trial at Lingfield, but Ryan Moore made sure she learnt plentyand if she settles, her class can come to the fore at the business end. Ed Walker’s horses are in incredible form and Qilin Queen, who beat Revoir at Newbury and is twice the price, could be one for value seekers.
Two Tempting is 3lb higher now than when winning this race last year but proved he remains in good heart when scoring at Chester last month. BOPEDRO was unlucky not to be a lot closer in last years race and is 14lb better off now. He has shown signs in his last two starts that a win could be just around the corner His stable companion Mirsky finally took advantage of a falling handicap mark last time and a 2lb rise isn’t insurmountable.
RACE SEVEN
Miss Information was a nice winner last time at Newmarket, has won at Epsom previously and with give in the ground, will tick a lot of boxes under Oisin Murphy in the finale. But this is RHOSCOLYN’s race. He won it in 2021 and again last year off the same mark as he competes off this time round, having the exact same prep run at Chester last week. The recent rain will also aid his cause.

BETFRED OAKS ANNIVERSARIES IN 2025
10 YEARS AGO – In a huge upset, Qualify becomes the joint longest-priced winner of the Oaks. Trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Colm O’Donoghue, the 50-1 chance gets up on the line to deny 5-2 Favourite Legatissimo by a short-head.
20 YEARS AGO – Eswarah emulates her dam Midway Lady by winning the Oaks. Midway Lady had taken the honours in the Classic 19 years earlier in 1986.
30 YEARS AGO – Moonshell brings up a Derby-Oaks double in the same year for the Maktoum family and Saeed bin Suroor. The same owner-trainer combination won that year’s Derby with Lammtarra.
40 YEARS AGO – Oh So Sharp follows up on her 1000 Guineas victory with a comfortable six-length defeat of Triptych in the Oaks. Sheikh Mohammed’s homebred filly, trained by Henry Cecil and ridden by Steve Cauthen, would go on to land the St Leger at Doncaster and is the most recent of the nine winners of the Fillies’ Triple Crown.
50 YEARS AGO – It is Oaks win number four for Lester Piggott as he partners the Jeremy Tree-trained Juliette Marny to a comfortable four-length success.
60 YEARS AGO – Long Look, ridden by Australian jockey Jack Purtell, is the first Oaks winner for legendary Irish trainer Vincent O’Brien.
70 YEARS AGO – The great Meld wins the Oaks. Previously successful in the 1000 Guineas, she would go on to win the St Leger to become the eighth of the nine winners of the Fillies’ Triple Crown. At stud, she went on to produce the 1966 Derby winner Charlottown.
80 YEARS AGO – Following on exactly a month after VE Day, the final wartime Oaks is staged on the July Course at Newmarket and won by Lord Derby’s Sun Stream.
90 YEARS AGO – Quashed springs a 33-1 surprise. She proves it to be no fluke by going on to also win the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot the following year.
100 YEARS AGO – Saucy Sue wins to follow up on her success in the 1000 Guineas. A high-class filly who won eight of her 10 starts, she was the penultimate of her trainer Alec Taylor Jr’s eight Oaks successes.
200 YEARS AGO – Wings lives up to her name as she flies home to win the Oaks.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
DIEGO VENTURA looks very much the one to beat. A two-time winning juvenile, he returned with a respectable third in the Listed King Charles II Stakes at Newmarket and backed that up with a gritty success at the same level at Longchamp. The forecast rain is very much in his favour and, providing he handles the undulations of this track, he will take some stopping. Hallasan can confirm Ascot form with Rebel's Gamble on 3lb better terms, while unexposed filly Saqqara Sands adds further spice to the race.
WIN: DIEGO VENTURA

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
Havana Hurricane overcame a tardy start to make a successful debut over 5f at Goodwood and reopposing runner-up Logi Bear franked that form when winning readily over this trip at Newmarket. Norman's Cay justified favouritism when getting up on the line in the Brocklesby and will almost certainly improve for this extra furlong, but MAXIMIZED rates the one to beat. He looked very laid-back prior to his Haydock introduction and did everything easily during the race, eventually beating a better-fancied stablemate eased down. Providing slower ground doesn't bother him, he can complete a double.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
It is difficult to oppose CALANDAGAN, who produced numerous top-class performances last season, including a six-length romp in the King Edward VII Stakes and a highly-creditable second to City Of Troy in the Juddmonte International. There was a lot to like about his comeback second in the Dubai Sheema Classic, coming from off the pace and recording the best finishing sectionals, and a first Group 1 success looms large. Last year's Betfred St Leger hero Jan Brueghel will appreciate stepping back up in distance and rates the biggest threat, ahead of Hong Kong Vase scorer Giavellotto, who was behind Calandagan at Meydan.

THE BETFRED OAKS
Older than The Derby by a year, The Oaks was the brainchild of Johnny Burgoyne, a soldier, playwright and politician who married into Lord Derby’s family.
Burgoyne had passed on the lease for his Surrey mansion, the Oaks, to his nephew, the 12th Earl of Derby, and persuaded the nobleman to create a race over a mile and a half for three-year-old fillies in response to the St Leger, which had been founded at Doncaster as a two-mile contest for colts of the same age in 1776.
The first Oaks, named after the nearby house, took place in 1779. The winner was Lord Derby’s Bridget, whose sire Herod was also responsible for Faith, successful in the fillies’ Classic two years later, and the 1783 victor Maid Of The Oaks.
In 1801, Eleanor was the first horse to win the Derby and triumph in the Oaks the very next day. The filly’s trainer, Mr Cox, died shortly before both Classics and his last words were recorded as “Depend on it, that Eleanor is a hell of a mare”.
Fully 56 years after Eleanor, Blink Bonny became the second filly to complete the Derby-Oaks double when she prevailed in 1857.
In 1902, Sceptre captured both the 1000 and 2000 Guineas at Newmarket before finishing fourth in the Derby following an interrupted preparation. Trained by owner, journalist and adventurer Robert Sievier, the very talented filly returned to form with a resounding victory in the Oaks two days later. She went on to capture the St Leger, becoming the only horse to win four British Classics.
Pretty Polly triumphed on all nine of her starts as a two-year-old and started the 1904 campaign with victory in the 1000 Guineas before going on to succeed in both the Oaks - when the shortest-priced winner ever at 8/100 - and the St Leger for the fillies’ Triple Crown. One of the greatest-ever fillies, Pretty Polly was victorious 22 times from 24 races and had a huge impact on the thoroughbred in her career as a broodmare.
Signorinetta became the third filly to complete the Derby-Oaks double in 1908, belying a starting price of 100/1 against the colts, while Fifinella was the last filly to manage the Classic double in 1916, when both races were held at Newmarket due to the First World War.
Sun Chariot triumphed in the 1942 Oaks, run at Newmarket during World War II, despite giving the rest of the field a furlong start when slowly away. The filly, leased to the monarch King George VI for her racing career by the Irish National Stud, won both the 1000 Guineas and the St Leger in impressive fashion to claim the fillies’ Triple Crown. This feat was emulated by Meld in 1955 and Oh So Sharp in 1985.
The 100/8 chance Carrozza, trained by Sir Noel Murless and partnered by Lester Piggott who had combined to win the Derby with Crepello two days beforehand, became the initial Classic winner for Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II when successful in the 1957 renewal of the Oaks. The Queen enjoyed a tremendous second Oaks success in her Silver Jubilee year of 1977, when Dunfermline triumphed before going on to win the final Classic, the St Leger.
There were emotional scenes in the winner’s enclosure in 2007 when the Ted Durcan-ridden Light Shift provided the late Sir Henry Cecil an eighth victory in the Oaks. The 2014 Oaks was run in memory of Sir Henry, one of British racing’s most influential and successful trainers of all time, who died on June 11, 2013 after a long battle with cancer.
In recent years, Enable was a brilliant winner in 2017 for John Gosden, Frankie Dettori and the late Khalid Abdullah. Her Epsom Downs success was the beginning of a five-race winning streak at G1 level in 2017 that included impressive victories in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp, making her the first Oaks winner to land Europe’s premier all-aged race.
In 2018, Enable went on to win a second Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe while she also became the first Oaks heroine to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf when successful at Churchill Downs in November. She also won Ascot’s King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes a record three times – 2017, 2019 and 2020.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
MUTAAWID went some way to living up to his top-class pedigree when scoring easily at Newmarket and a 10lb rise may not be enough to stop him from going in again. Botanical must enter calculations on his first start in handicap company since finishing second in the John Smith's Cup last summer, while Irish raider Akecheta caught the eye when not getting a clear run and keeping on late in a valuable contest over a mile at the Curragh. Arriving here on a four-timer after ending last season in top form, Ashariba is of interest on her return, as are Rathgar and Defiance

Desert Flower produced an excellent performance to win the Betfred 1000 Guineas under a fantastic ride by William Buick She was all class when holding a talented field at bay after an enterprising front-running ride by Buick, which saw her headed before battling back gamely to win in fine style. She had shown plenty of promise as a juvenile and proved that she is now an even better three-year-old, coming home the winner by a length to Flight She arrives here with question marks over her stamina but everything she’s shown to date indicates she should stay the trip. The class is certainly there and Desert Flower rates as the one they all have to beat
GISELLE
The William Hill Oaks Trial Fillies’ Stakes
Lingfield Park - Saturday 10th May
Giselle delivered a commanding performance in the William Hill Oaks Trial Fillies’ Stakes at Lingfield, solidifying her status as a leading contender for this year’s race. The Ballydoyle runner justified her 30/100 favoritism with a nine-length victory over her two rivals. It didn’t look to be the deepest race on paper but the daughter of Frankel couldn’t have done it anymore impressively. Despite racing keenly in the early stages, Giselle settled into a smooth rhythm under Moore’s guidance. She made a decisive move approaching the final two furlongs, quickly putting the race to bed before being eased down towards the finish.
MINNIE HAUK
The Weatherbys ePassport Cheshire Oaks
Chester - Wednesday 7th May
Minnie Hauk’s victory in the 2025 Cheshire Oaks enhanced her credentials as a leading contender for the Betfred Oaks. Trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore, the Frankel filly showed her superior ability in this key trial. Settling just behind the early leader, Queen Of Thieves, Minnie Hauk responded impressively when Moore urged her forward in the final stages, winning a shade cosily in the end. This performance not only added to O’Brien’s impressive record in the Cheshire Oaks but also positioned Minnie Hauk as a serious contender in this year’s Betfred Oaks.
WHIRL
The Tattersalls Musidora Stakes
York - Wednesday 14th May
The Aidan O’Brien contingent is completed by Tattersalls Musidora winner Whirl. She was noticeably weak in the market before the off but showed no sign of knowing that when coming home in splendid isolation ahead of Serenity Prayer. She looks to have all the credentials to make into a top competitor this year and will no doubt relish the step up into Group 1 company. The Musidora has an excellent record for producing future Betfred Oaks winners, with Soul Sister and the Aidan O’Brien-trained Snowfall the latest fillies to do the double.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
DESERT FLOWER looks more than capable of giving Charlie Appleby a first Oaks success. Unbeaten in five career outings, the daughter of Night Of Thunder only ever seems to do enough and the way she finished off the Betfred 1000 Guineas gave a strong indication that she may relish this rise in distance. A taking winner of the Cheshire Oaks, Minnie Hauk must enter calculations as a proven stayer but the best of the Ballydoyle contingent may be Whirl, who produced a career-best performance when landing the Musidora at York. Hailing from a family that includes Oaks winner Look Here, Revoir is another to consider on the rise in trip, as is the supplemented Elwateen, who caught the eye on only her second start when a highly-encouraging fourth in the Guineas.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
Having dictated the pace to lift the Thirsk Hunt Cup, Flight Plan should give another bold sight. However, Karl Burke's charge may have more competition for the lead and a 3lb higher mark could be enough to prevent him from following up. With that in mind, last year's winner of this contest TWO TEMPTING might be the answer. The six-year-old displayed his well-being with a triumph at Chester and a 5lb rise looks workable. Ebt's Guard and Mr Baloo are others to note.
WIN:
TWO TEMPTING EACH-WAY: Flight Plan

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
C&D winner MISS INFORMATION arrives on the back of a cosy victory at Newmarket and there could be more to come. Andrew Balding's filly is on an upward curve at present and she can make light work of a 4lb rise. The biggest threat may emerge in the shape of Darkness, who bounced back to form with a comfortable triumph at Thirsk last month, although last year's hero Rhoscolyn cannot be dismissed lightly.
