Welcome to Kelso Racecourse for a bumper eight-race programme featuring two of the series finals which were postponed from April.

The Herring Queen Mares Novices Hurdle Series Final has attracted a competitive field of twelve runners headed by the Irish duo Brucio and Lily du Berlais, while the Jodami Go North National Hunt Flat Race Series Final has attracted a field of ten. We’re grateful to the connections of all the runners on today’s programme, the racehorse owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff – thank you for choosing to run at Kelso We wish you an enjoyable afternoon of sport.

We are grateful to today’s race sponsors for their generous contribution to the prize money, helping us to enhance the programme here at Kelso Racecourse. In addition to The Racing Post, who have supported the Go North series of races at Kelso, Musselburgh and Carlisle, the sponsors include: Bedmax, the architects Aitken Turnbull, Howden Insurance Brokers, William Hill and Racing TV

Finally, the board of Kelso Races would like to thank all of the racegoers attending today - you help to create the wonderful atmosphere that Kelso is known for. Good luck and may you find plenty of winners.

How to Bet

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number

2. Choose your bet – ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

Look out for the charity Racing to School today; you shouldn’t miss them as they will be leading a group of local pupils and their teachers through every corner of the racecourse for an action-packed day of fun challenges and discovery The charity works nationwide with over 250 schools, and this year will reach around 16,000 young people – at UK racecourses, trainers’yards and studs.

They deliver free, outdoor activity days to support the learning and to boost the self-confidence of children aged nine and above. Racing to School uses racing venues as unique, fast-moving classrooms full of opportunities to practise and improve subjects like maths, literacy and problem-solving.

The charity is only able to support young people’s education through the kind donations it receives. Please scan this QR code to donate, if you can.

PLAY SMARTER

IDEM has made a promising start to his hurdling career, successful both outings in novices before shaping up well switched to handicaps, so he is taken to resume winning ways as he drops back down in grade. He can get the better of handicap-debutant Billy Boi Blue, while last-time-out course winner Kingston Bridge is also considered.

SHADES OF MIDNIGHT AWARD

The “Shades of Midnight” Horse of the Year Award, donated by the owners of Shady” (the winner of seven races including three at Kelso), is presented to the owners of the horse judged to have put up the most stirring performance (or performances) at Kelso during the 2023/24 season, selected from a list of nominations made by racegoers. The lad or lass of the winning horse will receive £200.

The judges singled out three horses, in addition to the winner, for an honourable mention. Coincidentally, all four were ridden by jockeys who’ve been aboard the judges recently retired The Ferry Master, while one of them (Henry Brooke) also rode Shady

The Winner is:

ELOI DU PUY (Nick Alexander) 6yo gelding, who ran an amazing 6 times at Kelso last season (all with top Hawick jockey Bruce Lynn in the saddle), winning three times plus a second and a third, starting from a handicap mark 92 and finishing on 113.

He has now run 9 of his 15 career runs at Kelso He’s shown himself to be a talented & gutsy young hurdler, loving his racing as well as Kelso’s energy sapping run for home, just like Shades of Midnight did.

Runners-up included:

Empire Steel (Sandy Thomson) 10yo grey gelding. His jumping was breathtaking for the win with Ryan Mania on board, he ran twice at the track last season and always excites the crowds with his jumping. Has run 6 of his 19 races at Kelso

Cracking Rhapsody (Ewan Whillans) 5yo gelding. Developing into a lovely prospect winning 2 from 3 at Kelso plus a second (Craig Nichol & Henry Brooke in saddle). He has run 4 of his 9 races at the track

Atlantic Dancer (Nick Alexander) game 11yo mare. Winning 2 from 2 at the track this season (Bruce Lynn again on board) and has run 7 of her 19 starts at Kelso.

PONY RACING AND RACING REMINISCENCE DAY

Free Admission

Sunday 2nd June

Join us on Sunday 2nd June for an afternoon of pony racing at Kelso Racecourse. Races will be scheduled for young riders of all levels of experience from none-at-all to wannabe-jockeys.

Staged as a taster day under the rules of the Pony Racing Association, young riders will also have the benefit of instruction from the staff of the Scottish Racing Academy

The late Eric Bryce left a huge cache of photographs depicting idyllic scenes of Kelso Racecourse and Friars Haugh Point-to-Point races, many of them featuring local racing families.

Come and see a large selection of Eric’s photographs which will be available to view on the first floor of the Tweedie Grandstand. Reminisce about horses and riders of the past – who knows, perhaps you’ll even find a photograph of yourself or a relative that you can take home and cherish.

This is an event for all generations – come and share memories as the youngest riders in our community head out onto the track to make some new ones

SAFETY INFORMATION

A day at Kelso Racecourse should be great fun for everyone; nobody wants an injury or an incident to spoil their day. So, when push comes to shove, we need to make sure that there isn’t any pushing or shoving.

The racecourse team prepares carefully for each event and we take every precaution to ensure that the site is as safe as is practical. However, we also need some help from you – to take responsibility for your own safety and to respect the safety and comfort of those around you. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a brief list of precautions that we’d like all visitors to consider:

Alcohol & Substance Abuse

Fortunately very few accidents occur at Kelso Racecourse, but those that do are most likely to be relatively minor incidents involving someone who has had too much to drink Quite simply: you’ll be safer if you drink less alcohol. On the rare occasion that we receive a customer complaint, it’s quite likely to be linked to the behaviour of someone who’s had one too many So please drink responsibly and encourage your friends to stay within their limits

Any incident involving substance abuse will be dealt with by Police Scotland.

Slips, Trips, Falls

We’ve commenced a series of developments at the racecourse and we’re gradually making the site more accessible for all, with smoother surfaces and ramps where we have differences in gradient

Please note that the site is not flat and there may be differences in levels, particularly between old surfaces, and surfaces which have recently been renewed. Please take care of yourselves and mind where you walk Don’t try to run faster than your legs can go, even if you think your bookmaker might be packing away for the day

Fences, Walls & Barriers

The fences, walls and temporary barriers located on the racecourse are intended to segregate people into specific areas This may include segregating people from horses or people from sensitive or hazardous equipment

Please do not attempt to climb over, sit on or stand on any barriers – regardless of whether they appear to be permanent or temporary features – they are not designed to take a person’s weight

Horses

Horses are big and run very fast; hopefully yours will run fastest of all. Please pay attention when in close proximity to the horses: stay on the public side of any barriers (close to the track or horse walk areas) and do not sit on or lean over barriers near to the horses The running rails are designed to encourage the horses to stay on the track –but they will not withstand a horse’s weight if they hit them, nor a jockey’s if he is thrown over them – so be prepared to move if a horse is behaving erratically

Fires

We’re proud of Kelso’s reputation for providing a warm welcome and the unique feature provided by the real fires that we light in the listed Grandstand and in the log-burning braziers surrounding the Parade Ring.

Our Fires have no brains – so please use your own. Fires are hot and there is a danger of burning yourself if you touch the fire or the surrounding metalwork Please do not put anything in the fires or fireplaces

Children

We welcome many children to Kelso races. Although we don’t consider them to be particularly dangerous, we do ask that all children are appropriately supervised by a responsible adult – who should be particularly mindful of all the considerations above
