Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
Official BHA Rating
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Form Guide
The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or /
CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out.

LAST TIME OUT | MONDAY 3RD JUNE
A bright and summery evening greeted punters attending our previous meeting on Monday 3rd June.
The exciting six race card was kicked off by Richard Fahey’s EARTHA with victory in the first race. The pretty two-year old daughter of Land Force broke well and put on a bold show of remaining prominent across the entire five and a half furlong distance. Despite dropping back two furlongs out, she kicked into gear in the final stretch when challenged by Karl Burke’s Unspoken Love (second) and David O’Meara’s Mae Amor (third) in a three way head to head. With Oisin Orr directing from the irons, she recovered strongly to take the win by just a neck and deliver an exciting opener. Clearly on roll, the Fahey and Orr duo took gold in the second race as well with The Cool Silk Partnership’s three-year old, EMINENT DUEL. Her start was somewhat unhurried, and as a result she had to overcome a hold up in the rear by swinging right two furlongs out. She readily made headway to recover lost ground, outdoing the John Wainwright-trained Biplane on her left by just half a length.
Third time lucky for Richard Fahey and Oisin Orr came in the form of well-bred Night of Thunder gelding GLISTENING NIGHTS. The strong looking French three-year-old took his place at the start as justified favourite, sporting the same bold chesnut coat as his Dante-winning half brother, Economics. He took keen hold and challenged from two furlongs out to secure the win from
Jessica Macey’s Mariner, who did well to overcome Charlie Johnston’s Mon Etoile in the final 110 yards, but could not match up to the winner.
Fahey had no runners in the next two races, finally allowing other trainers a look-in. Race four was taken by six-year old gelding YAZAMAN. Trained by Paul Midgley and ridden by Mark Winn, the Kodiac gelding took a keen hold and tidily reeled in Rogue de Vega’s lead during the last 110 yards to surpass his rival by a length and a quarter.
The fifth race was a one mile and two furlong handicap contested by a field of sixteen Much of the race was led by Anjo Bonita, who weakened with a furlong to go allowing midfield stalker LOUGHVILLE to sweep past. Captained by Joe Fanning, the four-year old son of Mastercraftsman held off contenders Dora Milaje and Tango Man to secure a comfortable four length win for trainer Alan King and build on his positive recent form.
The evening drew to a close as, fresh from his two race break, it was once again back to business as usual for Richard Fahey, whose three-year old Dandy Man gelding BATAL DANDY put in the work to make an impressive recovery from being held up in the rear of the field. Despite looking seemingly outpaced at times, Oisin Orr was able to encourage second wind from his charge in the final furlong, eventually making headway against Pinpoint to pip the Ewan Whillians favourite by a neck.

Territorial Knight may find this to be easier than last month’s introduction in a higher grade at York while Sun Petal ran well for a long way at Salisbury before fading in the closing stages. However, Richard Fahey sent out a newcomer to win this race 12 months ago and YES I’M MALI, who is out of a debut winner could make a bold bid on his racecourse bow.
WIN: YES I’M MALI
RACE: 18:00
DANGER: TERRITORIAL KNIGHT
TEES AGGREGATES was slowly away at Doncaster on his racecourse bow and was also hampered in the early stages. The son of Earthlight was doing is best work at the finish, and a smoother passage here could see him in the mix in a open contest. Redcar fourth, Hickton, may finish closer on this faster going, while Lesley’s Boy debuted at York and is another to consider River Blackwater and An Realta Carraig make most appeal of the newcomers.
WIN: TEES AGGREGATES
RACE: 18:30
DANGER: HICKTON
Both Tiaraqueen and Apocalyx made promising debuts last year but failed to build on those efforts on their next starts. The former makes most appeal of that pair, but TRANSITIONING looks a safer proposition. Andrew Balding’s charge won at Doncaster with plenty left in the tank on debut last month and may well defy a 7lb penalty. Spring Festival is a half-brother to an Italian Derby winner, while Thunder Run and Fox Spirit are other newcomers to note.
WIN: TRANSITIONING
RACE: 19:00
DANGER: TIARAQUEEN
Now that the penny has dropped for ATLANTIC GAMBLE, after a comfortable success at Kempton last month, there could be more improvement forthcoming from the son of Lightning Spear, and he can strike on the return to turf A highly-encouraging second over C&D last time out, John L Sullivan looks to be his main danger on quicker ground, along with First Encounter, who has been runner-up on his last two starts.
WIN: ATLANTIC GAMBLE
RACE: 19:30
DANGER: JOHN L SULLIVAN
HURT YOU NEVER regained the winning thread with a taking performance at Ripon last month and the slight rise in distance could see her in an even better light as she looks to double up Oneforsue arrives with similar claims, having broken her maiden in comfortable fashion over 6f at Redcar last June, while Angle Land should be able to build on a strong placed effort at Goodwood last month.
WIN: HURT YOU NEVER
RACE: 20:00
DANGER: ONEFORSUE
OWN ACCORD can go some way to repaying the faith of her connections, having started her career in April at the age of four The daughter of Pivotal was value for more than the winning margin when scoring here last time out over 7f and the step up in trip looks like a good move on her handicap debut. Newmarket second Victoria Falls and the capable Carolus Magnus are the dangers.
WIN: OWN ACCORD
RACE: 20:30
DANGER: VICTORIA FALLS
Berry Clever hit the frame in a warm race at Newmarket last month and he makes obvious appeal off an unchanged mark, but MARCHING MAC is preferred. The son of Invincible Army found improvement when sent handicapping for the first time at Brighton a fortnight ago, finishing second, and a subsequent 3lb rise might underestimate him. Others to note include Chatty and Louella.
WIN: MARCHING MAC
RACE: 21:00
DANGER: BERRY CLEVER
Chilled Out, Life On The Rocks and LASER FOCUS all arrive in search of their hat-tricks and the latter shades preference. James Owen’s charge overcame traffic problems to score at Lingfield a fortnight ago and a 9lb hike in the ratings does not look insurmountable for this son of Sea The Stars. Achernar steps up two furlongs on his handicap bow and is worth a market check.
WIN: LASER FOCUS
DANGER: CHILLED OUT

RACE DESCRIPTION This race is a five and a half furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

RACE DESCRIPTION Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for. To avoid horses being denied a run which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority has allowed the previous race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.

RACE DESCRIPTION This contest is a Novice Stakes run over a distance of seven furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season, whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 60 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

THE
Wemyss Point was a talented racehorse, giving his owners, The Green Oaks Partnership, many fantastic days out with 5 wins, 6 seconds, 4 thirds and 2 fourths during his career. 3 of these wins came at his beloved Wetherby over hurdles in 201718! Weymss is owned by Beth Hutchinson and started re-training last year for his first showing season with great success and we are all very excited to see what they do together in 2024!
Wemyss Point Lady Buttons
During her stellar racing career, Buttons garnered a huge following, and collected over £292,000 in prize money for her owner/breeders Jayne and Keith Sivils. Her first Racecourse win was at Wetherby in a Bumper in 2013, and she was a two-time winner of the Mares’ Listed Hurdle at Wetherby in 2018 & 2019.
Buttons went to live with Jennie Durrans in February 2023 and we are waiting to find out if Jumping is going to be their thing in 2024!
Guitar Pete
Pete had a hugely successful racing career, earning over £300,000 in prize money, which started in Ireland in 2013 before moving across the water to Nicky Richards in 2016. He was a two-time winner of the bet365 listed hurdle at Wetherby, but his biggest win was in the Grade 3 Caspian Caviar Gold Cup at Cheltenham.
Pete is now owned by Wetherby Director Laurence Kirby, and has taken to the hunting field like a duck to water! He loves jumping and Laurence is hoping to do more with him this summer!

Weightwatcher: ANGLE LAND won off a handicap mark of 80, her rating is now down 10lb to 70.
Longest Traveller: ANGLE LAND trained by R Cowell, Newmarket, 164 miles.
RACE DESCRIPTION This is a five and a half furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares which have been rated from 51 to 70 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 70 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 65

Weightwatcher: BELTANE won off a handicap mark of 77, his rating is now down 5lb to 72.
Longest Traveller: CAVALLUCCIO trained by A Haynes, Newmarket, 164 miles.
RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 65 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is.
