Dear Friends of Punchestown,
I’m delighted to welcome you here today for our final fixture of the 2023 / 2024 season. On behalf of the entire team here at Punchestown I would like to sincerely thank you for your continued support. We were all delighted that you made the effort to join us throughout the season and we certainly hope you enjoyed the experience.
I would like to welcome all of our sponsors here today to include K-Mech Mechanical, Dowlings Of Ballyshannon, Lily & Wild and Irish EBF. We also have some very special guests here today as we remember our Punchestown friend, Jim ‘Sandy’ Ryan and also thank Tom Maguire from the Order Of Malta for all of his hard work at Punchestown so far and going forward.
We extend our sincerest sympathies and deepest condolences to Anne and the extended MacDermott family on the very sad passing of Nick MacDermott recently. Synonymous with Punchestown, Nick has played an integral role in various capacities for many years, it certainly won’t ever be the same without them. It is the end of an era and the expression that “They don’t make them like they used to” is befitting of Nick. May he rest in peace as we cherish the many memories and stories he provided for us all.
I particularly wish to welcome the Members of the Kildare Hunt Club who have joined us here today for their annual luncheon. Their continued support and assistance is very much appreciated and we wish them a very enjoyable day.
Additionally, wehaveanexhibitionbroughttoyoubyBermingham Cameras situated in the ground floor of the main grandstand
Photography students, enthusiasts and club members were invited to capture Punchestown in a photo whether it be the people, place or occasion.
Finally, I would like to wish you all a very enjoyable summer and I hope you have plenty of success at the great summer racing festivals that are held throughout Ireland
Kindest Regards
Conor O’Neill

Scaramanga was a Grade 1 winner in the US when last seen over obstacles and Willie Mullins’ representative merits the utmost respect on his return, but it is ASH TREE MEADOW who shades preference. The talented chaser, a Grade 3 winner as recently as last month, will have no problem reverting to hurdles and looks to hold leading claims in receipt of 6lb from the other principals. Fascile Mode was a creditable third at Ballinrobe last time out, but that position might be his best hope once again. WIN: ASH TREE MEADOW

Easy Fella bolted up on his fencing bow at Tipperary and Henry de Bromhead’s charge is an obvious candidate once again, but REVEREND HUBERT can come out on top. Once useful on the Flat, Charles Byrnes’ gelding appeared to relish a switch to fences when winning comfortably at Limerick, and natural improvement ought to give him every chance of following up Solitary Man and Saylavee, who receives 7lb from the aforementioned trio, are others to consider

Nicholas MacDermott 7 November 1930 - 29 May 2024
It is sad to record that our Honorary President will no longer be with us at Punchestown. Nick served the Kildare Hunt and Punchestown in many capacities for almost 70 years. Nick was bred to be a hunting man , his grandfather Joseph hunted with the Ward Union and Meath and his mothers side was steeped in Kildare.
Elected a member of the Kildare Hunt in 1953 Nick served Michael Beaumont as Deputy Master and hunted the doghounds when Jack Hartigan hunted the bitches. He was a member of the Punchestown Management Committee, Vice Chairman and then Chairman of the Kildare Hunt He also served as a Trustee for the Hunt and Punchestown for over 50 years before becoming Honorary President of the Kildare Hunt Club.
Never afraid to express his view, always willing to help and advise and possessing a great sense of humour, Nick throughout all his offices treated everybody the same and retained a great humility. He will be much missed by all, particularly his loving wife Anne who was his mainstay and his devoted family to whom we send all our sympathy and love. May he rest in peace

A chase mark of 106 proved far too lenient for MOUSEY BROWN, who recorded a cosy success at Kilbeggan a week ago A 10lb rise will ask more questions of her, but she is open to further improvement over the larger obstacles and her prominent style of racing will suit around here. Jasmin De Cotte has few miles on the clock himself and he is interesting from an opening chase figure of 123, having struck at Kilbeggan last month. Slane Hill could have a say on his return from a 203-day absence, while Railway Hurricane is also noted.

You will occasionally see letters after a horses form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF. But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?
C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses ’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here at Punchestown may suggest that it will run well again today.
D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse So today’s distance should suit.
CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here at Punchestown but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today. So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards.
C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course
BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today.
So now when you run through today’s runners and riders, you can identify which horses run well here at Punchestown and those which will be well suited by the distance that they are racing over.

Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.
BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!
VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them.
CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision.
EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision.
HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes.
NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.
TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.

After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.
For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals.
The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!

Uncle Pat displayed a willing attitude when making a successful start to his racing career with a triumph in a NH Flat race at Downpatrick in August last year Willie Mullins’ gelding is sure to prove popular now facing obstacles for the first time, but the experienced CHOSEN THYME edges the verdict. The seven-year-old looks well worth another go at a longer distance after his staying-on fourth over 2m4f here in February and he was only beaten a length a quarter that day. Innatendue and Lightkeeper are also noted.

RACE RESULTS
The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place. The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake. Another common bet is each-way. This is effectively two bets in one One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered. The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows:
All races of less than 5 runners – win only
All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2
All other races of more than 8 runners –1/5, 1,2,3
Handicaps of 12-15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3
Handicaps of more than 15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3,4

BELLA BLISS possibly made her bid for glory a fraction too soon when she was overhauled near the finish over an extended 2m3f at Limerick 17 days ago and, with this longer trip very much in her favour, the John McConnell-trained could be hard to reel in this time, especially with Alex Harvey’s 7lb claim boosting her chance at the weights. Dorans Law is open to improvement now he tries a longer distance, while Donkey Years also rates a key player from a competitive mark in comparison to his chase rating.
