WELCOME

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Hamilton Park’s opening day of the season, the Les Hoey MBE DreamMaker Foundation Family Raceday. The team have been eagerly awaiting today to open the gates again for racing and start what we’re sure will be an exciting 2024 race season.

As ever we are committed to maintaining the quality of the race programme on offer here at Hamilton Park with total prize money set to reach £1.58M in 2024. This year’s programme continues to see investment in prize money at all levels, with every fixture due to be run for at least 25% above BHA minimum values, rising to 81% for today’s fixture. We will once again break new ground with our richest raceday ever, with the return of the Sky Bet Sunday Series fixture which this year moves to Sunday 2 June This fixture is part of the industry Premierisation trial and will feature total prize money of £225,000 including a new Class 2 handicap worth £75,000, making it our second richest race ever behind the historic Lanark Silver Bell Heritage Handicap.

Away from the track the team have been working hard to ensure that the racecourse and resort grounds look as spectacular as ever for you all today Improvements have been made to the facilities including the refurbishment of both the Annual Members bar and the ever-popular Racing TV bar, as well as once again improving the facilities for visiting Owners and Trainers. As always my thanks go to our fantastic Hamilton Park resort team for all of their efforts in preparing for the new season.

Today’s racing looks set to be incredibly competitive across the card with the first race, the £30,000 Apex Traffic Management Buttonhook Handicap set to be shown live on ITV & STV Racing. The 1m 5f start is just behind the Winning Line and makes for a great spectacle as the horses leap from the stalls – it’s definitely worth heading down to the rail to watch! Capital Theory is top of the weights for trainer Charlie Johnston in the familiar colours of Dr Jim Walker, who will no doubt be looking for another winner following past successes with Austrian Theory in the Almada Mile in 2022 and of course Subjectivist who won the Glasgow Stakes in 2020. Three-time Hamilton Park winner Sir Chauvelin is also in the line-up for 2023 Champion Trainer Jim Goldie who is double-handed in the race with Euchen Glen under Paul Mulrennan. I wish all of today’s runners and riders the very best of luck!

At 3.40pm our attention will turn briefly to Newmarket for the Qipco 1000 Guineas, to see who will claim one of Britain’s five Classic races. We’ll be showing away racing from Newmarket and Salisbury on the screens around the course throughout the afternoon, and our on-course betting partners will be able to help if you’re looking to have a flutter.

Our thanks go to all of today’s sponsors - Les Hoey MBE DreamMaker Foundation, Apex Traffic Managment, Darley, European Breeders Fund, Racing TV and of course our very own Hampton by Hilton Hamilton Park. Your support is very much appreciated and I do hope you and your guests enjoy your afternoon with us today

Have a great day today and I hope you start the season with a winner!

Kind regards,

Racing Jargon Buster

Do not be put off by the weird terms you may hear on the racetrack. Like any traveller in a strange country, the novice racegoer will soon pick up a smattering of the language, and then rapidly become fluent. The following might help those racegoers keen to enhance their language skills.

ACCUMULATOR bet involving two or more selections in different races: winnings from one are placed on the next

ALLOWANCE is the weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience

ALL WEATHER RACING flat racing which takes place on an artificial surface

AMATEUR (rider) on racecards, their names are prefixed by Mr, Mrs, Captain, etc., to indicate their amateur status

APPRENTICE young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while he or she is learning the business of race-riding

BACKWARD used of a horse which needs time to mature

CLAIMER of a race: a claiming race; of a jockey: an apprentice COLT male, ungelded horse up to four years old

COURSE SPECIALIST horse which tends to run well at a particular track

DAM mother of a horse

DISTANCE the length of a race: 5 furlongs is the minimum and the 4 1⁄2 miles of the Grand National the longest. Also, the margin by which a horse wins or is beaten by the horse in front: this ranges from a short head to ‘by a distance’ (more than 30 lengths); a ‘length’ is measured from the horse’s nose to the start of its tail

DISTANCE an unmarked point 240 yards from the winning post (thus ‘below the distance’ means closer home than that point)

DRAW for flat racing only, describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls, drawn randomly the day before

EVENS or EVEN MONEY when your stake exactly equals your winnings - thus £5 at evens wins a further £5

FILLY female horse up to four years old

FOAL horse of either sex from the time of its birth until 1 January the following year

FURLONG 220 yards (one eighth of a mile)

GELDING castrated horse

GOING the description of conditions underfoot on the racecourse. Official Jockey Club going reports progress as follows: Heavy - soft - good to soft - good - good to firm - firm - hard

GREEN (of a horse) inexperienced

HAND unit of four inches in which a horse’s height is measured, at the shoulder

JOLLY betting parlance for the favourite in a race - the horse with the shortest odds

JUDGE official responsible for declaring the finishing order of a race and the distances between the runners

JUVENILE two-year-old horse

hamilton-park.co.uk
WWW.HAMILTON-PARK.CO.UK

MAIDEN horse which has not won a race

MARE female horse five years and over

MONKEY betting parlance for £500

ODDS ON odds where the winnings are less than the stake (which is of course returned to you): thus a winning £2 bet at 2-1 on wins you £1

OFF THE BIT/OFF THE BRIDLE describes a horse being pushed along by his jockey, losing contact with the bit in his mouth

ON THE BIT/ON THE BRIDLE describes a horse going well within himself, still having a grip on the bit

OVER THE TOP where a horse is said to have gone if he has passed his peak for the season

PACE ‘up with the pace’ means close to the leaders; ‘off the pace’ means some way behind the leaders

PADDOCK area of the racecourse incorporating the pre-parade ring, parade ring and winner’s enclosure

PATTERN the elite races, divided in Flat racing into Groups One, Two, Three and Listed

PENALTY weight added to the allotted handicap weight of a horse which has won since the weights were originally published

PHOTO FINISH electronic photographic device which determines minimal distances in a close finish

PLATE shoe worn by horse for racing

PONY betting parlance for £25

RULE 4 betting rule covering deductions made from winning bets if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed but before the ‘Under Starter’s Orders’ signal; the amount deducted depends on the price of the withdrawn horse

RUN FREE describes a horse going too fast, usually early in the race, to allow it to settle

SCOPE the potential for physical development in a horse

SIRE father of a horse

SPREAD A PLATE when a racing plate or horseshoe becomes detached from an animal’s hoof, this sometimes causes a delay while the horse is re-shod

SPRINGER/STEAMER a horse whichshortens dramatically in the betting

SP/STARTING PRICE the official price of a horse at which bets are settled in the betting shops

STEWARDS the panel of men and women - usually a total of four - who are responsible for seeing that the Rules of Racing are adhered to

STEWARDS’ ENQUIRY enquiry by the stewards into the running of a race

TIC-TAC the bookmaker’s method of relaying odds information on the racecourse, by means of hand signals

WEIGH IN/WEIGH OUT weighing of jockey before and after a race to ensure that the correct weight has been carried; the announcement ‘weighed in’ signals that the result is official, and all bets can be settled

YANKEE combination bet involving four selections in different races: six doubles, four trebles and one four-horse accumulator - eleven bets

YEARLING horse of either sex from 1st January to 31st December of the year following its birth

THE APEX TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT LTD

BUTTONHOOK HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 3)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and five furlongs handicap race for fouryear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

THE DARLEY STALLIONS EBF NOVICE STAKES (CLASS 2) (GBB RACE)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This contest is a Novice Stakes, run over a distance of five furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses

unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old

RACE STATISTICS

10TH ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a five furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 49 to 68. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 65 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60.

It was hard not be taken by the way FALLEN ANGEL picked up again when joined in the closing stages of the Moyglare and, with 1m likely to suit on that evidence, she can improve again and provide the increasingly-powerful Karl Burke stable with a first British Classic success. THE HAMPTON BY HILTON AT HAMILTON PARK HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and three furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

RACE STATISTICS

Leading course trainer (19-24): J Goldie (40 wins from 360 runners, 11%) runs SPANISH HUSTLE

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): C Johnston (8 wins from 46 runners, 17%) runs FLIGHT OF ANGELS

Weightwatcher: THE NAVIGATOR won off a handicap mark of 66, his rating is now down 9lb to 57.

Longest Traveller: MY LITTLE QUEENS trained by R Fahey, Malton, 203 miles.

THE HAMPTON BY HILTON ONSITE HOTEL HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and half a furlong handicap race for four-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

RACE STATISTICS

Leading course trainer (19-24): J Goldie (40 wins from 360 runners, 11%) runs SHINE ON BRENDAN Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): D O’Meara (9 wins from 48 runners, 19%) runs NATZOR

Weightwatcher: DETECTIVE won off a handicap mark of 79, his rating is now down 5lb to 74.

Longest Traveller: NATZOR trained by D O’Meara, Upper Helmsley, 208 miles.

BETTING FORECAST: 3-1 Natzor (FR),

4-1 Arkenstaar (GB), 5-1 Trais Fluors (GB), 7-1 Black Friday (GB), 9-1 Shine On Brendan (IRE), 12-1 B Associates (IRE), 16-1 Jackhammer (IRE), 25-1 Detective (GB)

RACE SUMMARY: ARKENSTAAR made a decent return when third at Pontefract 2 weeks ago, especially as he left the impression the outing may just have been needed, so he’s taken to enhance his excellent track record back at this venue. Natzor lost his way for Archie Watson but made a highly positive start for this yard when just failing at Newcastle on return so is an obvious threat, while Shine On Brendan is another with a good record here.

Our penultimate contest of the day This is a one mile and half a furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 65. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 65 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60.

RACE STATISTICS

Leading course trainer (19-24): K R Burke (12 wins from 94 runners, 13%) runs EMU WAR

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): K R Burke (11 wins from 44 runners, 25%) runs EMU WAR

Longest Traveller: GOOD MORNING ALEX trained by D & N Barron, Thirsk, 173 miles.

BETTING FORECAST: EVENS Good Morning Alex (GB), 9-2 Wonderful Lives (GB), 15-2 Ready Or Nott (IRE), 10-1 Emu War (FR), 14-1 Starlight Stanley (GB), 20-1 Naturalia (GB), 50-1 Nana’s Ancestors (GB), 80-1 Millbuie (GB)

RACE SUMMARY: GOOD MORNING ALEX confirmed his effectiveness on turf in no uncertain terms when bolting up at Wetherby last week and a penalty looks unlikely to stop him improving his already impressive strike rate. Wonderful Lives failed to meet expectations at Newcastle but cheekpieces now go on and he rates the main threat.

THE RACING TV HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is six furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65.

RACE STATISTICS
