GOODWOOD RACES 2024
SUNDAY 09 JUNE
OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
SUNDAY 09 JUNE
OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
Welcome to our Family Race Day, a fixture that promises to be a fabulous celebration of racing and family entertainment.
Proceeding the Thoroughbred racing are two Charles Owen Pony Races in which young jockeys of the future will be learning how to handle Goodwood’s unique contours. Though small, these ponies are very fast, and the races are certainly no less competitive than the races later on.
We then have seven races to enjoy this afternoon and we extend our thanks to sponsors William Hill, Hallgarten & Novum Wines, the British EBF, Weatherbys, Rod Gaskin and the Racing Club.
Aside from the racing, we have trips to the start, and fun for the whole family with a variety of activities for children to enjoy including a magician, traditional fairground, face painting and a sports zone.
I wish you a very enjoyable afternoon here at Goodwood.

course characteristics
Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

Finn’s Charm might have struggled in a hot 0-105 contest at Epsom recently, but it would be unwise to rule him out now eased in class from a sliding handicap mark. TOIMY SON bumped into an improver when filling the runner-up spot over C&D last time out, though, and any further progression can see David Menuisier’s gelding go one better. Son Of Man was never involved on last month’s seasonal return, but he could fare better with that under his belt.

Jack Channon landed the corresponding event 12 months ago and he could do so once more with DOUBLE O ONE. Formerly staged at Newbury and registered as the Abingdon Stakes, this is the second running of the Weatherbys / British EBF Agnes Keyser Fillies’StakesatGoowood, followingon fromtheimpressivevictoryofAlAsifah in2023.
Third in the Weatherbys-sponsored Cheshire Oaks, Seaward is officially rated 95 and has since taken her chanceintheOaksatEpsom.Although she trailed home in 12th position, this represents a drop in class and it is worth remembering that she also contested a Group 1 (Fillies’ Mile) as a juvenile.
The highest-rated filly in the nine-strong field is Bolsena who finished third in Listed company at York last month. This is her first start beyond a mile and on breeding alone, the 10-furlong trip would be a minor concern.
If there is a potentially smart performer in the field, Sea Just In Time looks to be it.
The blinkered Beeley finished behind Seaward at Chester whilst stable-mate Strutting was beaten off amarkof82inahandicapatthistrack inlate-Maysolooksupagainstitback upinclass.
Ambiente Amigo finished just behind SeawardintheFillies’Milelastautumn and travelled well for a long way over
course-and-distancejust15daysago, soJamesOwen’sPostponedfillycould possiblystepforward.
Four fillies arrive here on the back of having won last time out and they include Doncaster winner (handicap) LavaStream and Bath scorer (novice) Love You Darling but both are still rated in the 70s so clearly have plenty tofind.
With that in mind, perhaps the unexposed pairing are of most interest. Nakheel won a maiden over this trip at Ascot but that form offers up mixed messaged and the runner-up was disappointing at Haydock on Thursday, which leaves the once-raced Sea Just In Time as themostcaptivatingrunner.
William Haggas’ nicely-bred daughter of Sea The Stars – who is the third foal of her dam and is a full-sister to a couple of winners – looked highly-promising when making a winning debut at Newmarket and the runner-upwononhernextstart.Settled inlastplace, shesweptaroundthefield toscoreindominantfashion, leavinga lastingimpressionintheprocess.
The same connections won this race back in 2018 with Sea Of Class – who wontheIrishandYorkshireOaks’onher nexttwostarts–andlastyear’swinner showed that a filly with such limited experience can take this Listed prize. Ifthereisapotentiallysmartperformer in the field, Sea Just In Time looks tobeit.

SEA JUST IN TIME was most taking when scooting clear of her rivals on debut at Newmarket last month William Haggas’ filly could take this rise in class in her stride before a possible crack at Royal Ascot. She is in the Irish Oaks and the Arc too. Seaward will find this a lot less competitive than her last-placed finish in the Oaks at Epsom recently, with the drop in trip looking a positive move. Bolsena and Nakheel also warrant close inspection.

CRESCENT LAKE posted another creditable effort in defeat when making the frame over 1m6f here. King Of Conquest sets the standard after being denied by the smallest of margins in the Aston Park at Newbury, and he is a course winner so has to be respected. However, AIMERIC is taken to improve past him. Roger Varian’s five-year-old has risen up the handicap ranks and took a class 2 event in smooth style at Lingfield, which puts him on a rating of 108. The son of Frankel can take another step forward and complete the hat-trick. Deauville Legend will find this easier than his fourth in the Ormonde Stakes and rounds out the shortlist.

The hat-trick seeking Change Sings returns to turf after scoring by a neck at Kempton, but this requires more off a 4lb higher rating. With that in mind, a chance can be taken on EMINENCY. The son of Havana Grey was far from disgraced when sixth in a class 2 event at Epsom and the handicapper has given him a chance by dropping him 2lb. With Rossa Ryan taking over the reins, he looks the one to be on, while Rhythm N Hooves can fight it out for the minor honours.
