WELCOME

A warm welcome to you all for our Maggie’s Goes Racing September Weekend Family Raceday, our final fixture of what has been a wonderful 2022 season here at Hamilton Park. As regular racegoers will know, we like to top and tail our season with a family day and it’s great to see so many youngsters come along and enjoy a great day out at the racecourse.

Our title sponsors today are Maggie’s, which is a charity that provides free support and care for those dealing with cancer This wonderful charity provides an incredible range of support from their eight care home’s across Scotland, with their nearest facility based at the Elizabeth Montgomerie Building at Monklands Hospital in Airdrie. The team from Maggie’s have a stand with us today, so please do take the time to visit them and make a donation if you possibly can to support this very worthy charity

A huge thank you goes to all of today’s sponsors; Maggie’s, Hampton by Hilton Hamilton Park, Joseph Leckie & Sons Ltd, Equi’s Ice Cream, Bardykes Farm Nursery School, the European Breeders Fund and Saucer Solutions for their support of today’s racing. I would also like to thank our Annual Members for their continued support of Hamilton Park this year I hope you all have a great day with us.

We have a fantastic afternoon of racing ahead of us with some extremely competitive fields across the card We will also be crowning our champion Owner, Trainer, Jockey and Apprentice Jockey as our season comes to a close. Jimmy Long has already secured the Owner’s title for 2022 with eight winners so far this season. Jim Goldie also has an unassailable lead in the Trainer’s standings having saddled 18 winners before today’s fixture, including the Lanark Silver Bell Heritage Handicap with Wickywickywheels in the familiar colours of Jimmy Long.

The Jockey’s title is all but secured for Paul Mulrennan, barring an exceptional day forthose in the chasing pack which include Callum Rodriguez and Andrew Mullen. However, the Apprentice Jockey Championship is still very much up for grabs, with seven riders within one win of top spot. Harry Russell is currently leading the standings and will be hoping for another good showing this afternoon.

As usual on a family day here at Hamilton Park, we have a huge range of free kids entertainment on the lawns for all to enjoy. The bungee trampolines are always a firm favourite and I love to see the kids flying through the air with huge smiles on their faces! With the season drawing to a close, I would like to thank every Owner, Trainer, Jockey and member of Stable Staff for their continued support of our fixtures, as well as our own incredible team at Hamilton Park. Without your tireless work, skill, commitment and enthusiasm, the Hamilton Park experience would be impossible to deliver

Lastly, thank you to each and every racegoer who has visited us this season. I do hope you have enjoyed our racedays as much as we have and I very much look forward to welcoming you back when our fixtures get underway on Sunday 7 May 2023

Have a great day and be lucky one more time!

Kind Regards

RACING JARGON BUSTER

Do not be put off by the weird terms you may hear on the racetrack. Like any traveller in a strange country, the novice racegoer will soon pick up a smattering of the language, and then rapidly become fluent. The following might help those racegoers keen to enhance their language skills.

ACCUMULATOR bet involving two or more selections in different races: winnings from one are placed on the next ALLOWANCE is the weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience

ALL WEATHER RACING flat racing which takes place on an artificial surface

AMATEUR (rider) on racecards, their names are prefixed by Mr, Mrs, Captain, etc., to indicate their amateur status

APPRENTICE young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while he or she is learning the business of race-riding

DISTANCE the length of a race: 5 furlongs is the minimum and the 4 1⁄2 miles of the Grand National the longest. Also, the margin by which a horse wins or is beaten by the horse in front: this ranges from a short head to ‘by a distance’ (more than 30 lengths); a ‘length’ is measured from the horse’s nose to the start of its tail DISTANCE an unmarked point 240 yards from the winning post (thus ‘below the distance’ means closer home than that point)

DRAW for flat racing only, describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls, drawn randomly the day before EVENS or EVEN MONEY when your stake exactly equals your winnings thus £5 at evens wins a further £5 FILLY female horse up to four years old FOAL horse of either sex from the time of its birth until 1 January the following year FURLONG 220 yards (one eighth of a mile) GELDING castrated horse

This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

Hamilton Park Executive will present a memento to the winning owner In addition, they will present a cash prize to the person in charge of the horse judged to be the best turned out in this race Owners Prize Money. Winner £3798; Second £1898; Third £950; Fourth £474. (Penalty Value £4806) emerge as the chief threat.

This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 70 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 65.

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares only which have been rated from 71 to 90. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty usually 6lb

This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for threeyear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Hamilton Park Executive will present a memento to the winning owner In addition, they will present a cash prize to the person in charge of the horse judged to be the best turned out in this race Owners Prize Money. Winner £2859; Second £1429; Third £715; Fourth £357; Fifth £240; Sixth £240. (Penalty Value £3618) is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for threeyear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60.
