GOODWOOD RACES 2024

SATURDAY 4 MAY

OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

WELCOME TO THE SEASON OPENER

Welcome to day two of our Season Opener.

Today’s seven-race card features a duo of superb Listed contests. Worth £60,000 to the winner, The William Hill Conqueror Fillies’ Stakes was won last year by Roman Mist, who went on to prove consistent at group level winning in England and overseas.

The second valuable contest, The British Stallion Studs EBF Daisy Warwick Fillies’ Stakes similarly has been a useful stepping-stone for progressive fillies and mares. Introduced in 2011, the race takes its name from Daisy, Countess of Warwick, a staunch supporter of educational and employment schemes for women in the early twentieth century. In 2021 Alpinista took the honours en route to claiming three stellar Group 1 successes in Europe, including victory in Europe’s richest race, The Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Our thanks go to William Hill and the Trustees of the European Breeders’ Fund. I look forward to seeing you at our May Festival where we have two days of quality racing and fun for the whole family.

THE COURSE

course characteristics

Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.
