I’m delighted to welcome you here today for day one of the “Summer In Town” weekend fixture which ends a great season here at the home of Irish Jumps.

We extend our sincerest sympathies and deepest condolences to Anne and the extended MacDermott family on the very sad passing of Nick MacDermott recently. Synonymous with Punchestown, Nick has played an integral role in various capacities for many years, it certainly won’t ever be the same without them. It is the end of an era and the expression that “They don’t make them like they used to” is befitting of Nick. May he rest in peace as we cherish the many memories and stories he provided for us all.

We have a great weekend planned for the ‘Summer In Town’ mini-festival with a BBQ situated in the Punchestown Garden across the two days We have Live music after racing today and a shuttle bus service into Naas where you can continue the party with friends and family

This should be straightforward for ICARE DESBOIS. On what was his handicap debut, the French-bred grey looked set to land a valuable contest at Killarney last month, before a bad mistake at the last resulted in Paul Townend being unseated Despite that mishap, he was upped 7lb by the assessor and is by far the highest rated horse in this six-runner contest. Uncle Phil is sure to have plenty of supporters, but his most recent efforts have been disappointing and he is without a win from four visits to Punchestown. Towards the bottom of the handicap, GREAT BEAR appeals most Returning from a break, he ran a fine race to finish third at Ballinrobe, on what was his handicap debut over fences. It is sad to record that our Honorary President will no longer be with us at Punchestown. Nick served the Kildare Hunt and Punchestown in many capacities for almost 70 years. Nick was bred to be a hunting man , his grandfather Joseph hunted with the Ward Union and Meath and his mothers side was steeped in Kildare.

Elected a member of the Kildare Hunt in 1953 Nick served Michael Beaumont as Deputy Master and hunted the doghounds when Jack Hartigan hunted the bitches. He was a member of the Punchestown Management Committee, Vice Chairman and then Chairman of the Kildare Hunt He also served as a Trustee for the Hunt and Punchestown for over 50 years before becoming Honorary President of the Kildare Hunt Club.

Never afraid to express his view, always willing to help and advise and possessing a great sense of humour, Nick throughout all his offices treated everybody the same and retained a great humility. He will be much missed by all, particularly his loving wife Anne who was his mainstay and his devoted family to whom we send all our sympathy and love. May he rest in peace
